Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 13-19, 2016

It’s a bit shocking (in a good way) to see the short drama Baek-hee Has Returned getting such high ratings throughout its two week run, ending with a pretty darn impressive 10.4%. Monster stayed in first place this week by a margin, while Jackpot finished its run with 10%, which, all told, isn’t too bad. (It is a drop from the numbers it premiered to, but that shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone who watched the show.)

The Wednesday-Thursday dramas continue to swap places, with none of them getting over 10%—but something must’ve gone down in Master—God of Noodle for it to see the jump it did from 6.9% to 9.0%. Entertainer continues to be in third place, though at least it’s been holding steady around the 7% mark.

Police Unit 38 began its run on OCN in the Friday-Saturday timeslot, and did pretty well (for cable) by ending its first week at 1.6%. Mirror of the Witch continues to hold steady under 3%, while Dear My Friends is holding fast just under 6%. It’s not a runaway hit, but it is doing the best out of the three weekend cable offerings. tvN must be a very happy network right now.

Yay for police unit 38. I enjoyed it so far, the bad guy is annoying but that's just how it is ? Can't wait for our guys to give them their lesson.
Hope it keeps getting better for the next ep!

Yes, I like the black comedy and human sociality story they have. Waiting for the next week episodes.

I thought the ratings for Police Unit 38 would be combined since it is airing on both OCN and tvN. The ratings of the premier episode were higher on tvN than OCN even though tvN aired the episode half an hour later than OCN.

Where did you see those ratings? I checked the Nielsen website and only see the OCN ratings for PU38, not tvN's.

I've started watching Police Unit 38 and I've gotta say that I enjoy it very much.
I saw people say that the premiere's week episodes were boring and they will watch it only for Seo In-guk/Soo-young, yet I don't remember having so much fun during first two episodes in a long time.
I guess this drama's not for everyone, I hope the writers keep up the good and clever writing!

And my usual bitterness over Mirror of the Witch. Wake up, people! Watch this masterpiece, s**t got real this week and I can't honestly predict where the plot is going, but this exactly what I love about this drama.
I wish people started appreciating good shows better.

I know, but think that MotW is receiving lots of love...just not from too many people, hehe!! Hope that at least the team and the actors get recognition for their awesome work here and we have the opportunity to enjoy them in the future. I was already a fan of YSY but now I will follow closely KSR and the team that produced this little gem :)
Ah, and also Yeom Jeong Ah! she and her red lipstick made a big impression :D

True, I guess. I too am impressed deeply by Yoon Shi-yoon and Kim Sae-ron (and their chemistry which is slaying in very episode to be honest, that goodbye scene from episode 12, masterpiece).
I'll make sure to keep up with their next projects.

Police Unit 38 started off slow, but the second episode was awesome. I can understand why they did it that way because now I'm dying for next week's episode!
Not just because of SIG, but Ma Dong Seok is awesome too... And I cannot wait for forces combined to kick the that spoilt tax evader's ass and have him cry.
And I totally agree- Hope the writing/plot lives up to the acting!

SO AWESOME. Funny, clever, even made me tear up a couple times. Car chase sequence had me on the edge of my seat. I started for SIG who lived up to my expectations but Ma Dongsuk is also amazing. I've never seen him in anything before but I'm a total fan now. Very excited for the rest!

Oh, I didn't know he was in Shut Up. I always meant to watch that but never got around to it, maybe I'll start this week since I'm only watching weekend dramas these days. Bad Guys is too violent for me, I'm a scaredy cat.

0

Oh, yikes, no, I don't think I can do it. I tried PotUp's recaps also when it first came out and those were even scarier with the gifs.

Ma Dong Suk is an awesome film actor! He is one of my favorite supporting actor together with Jo Jin Woong, Kwak Do Won etc. If you think he's awesome in dramas, he is even more awesome in his films playing opposite the best of the best.

I actually enjoyed both episodes of Police Unit 38. SIG, Ma Deong Seok and Sooyoung did really well. I'm super excited for the next episodes.

Same here, I loved both episodes. I didn't even think that the second was better or more interesting than the first, they were both well-made and kept my interest through.

If anything, I wish Soo-young was featured more, but I guess we'll be seeing her more in next episodes, since her loveline with Seo In-guk will begin (I hope it does at least) and the whole team will be assembled together.

I'm anticipating next Friday as well :)

I felt like the first episode of 38 was slow until it shifted its focus to Seo In-Gook's character, and that's when things really picked up.
And it just improved in the second episode. Not as comedic as I had hoped, but still pretty fun. Looking forward to seeing how the series unfolds.

I agree Mirror of the Witch deserves more love. It is the number one drama for me right now with Beautiful Gong Shim in close second.

I wanted to watch Police Unit 38 but hesitated after I read many comments that it was boring. Thought I'd wait for another week to see what comes out of it. So things pick up in ep 2? I will still watch it no matter what for Ma Dong Seok.

My dramas are all bunched over the weekend and early in the week. I start with MoW, BGS and then OHY. Throwing in Unit 38 just makes it more packed.

I have nothing to watch mid week. I saw the latest teaser for Uncontrollably Fond. Suzy surpassed Woo Bin's lazy rock star with her own act. Looks like I have to wait for W to see if my mid week drought can end.

I watch 'Lucky Romance' from Wednesday -Thursday timeslot, but it just kinda is, I mean, it doesn't really pull me in and make me shudder wanting to know what happens next. I guess I'm still watching it, because I've started watching it. It's entertaining, but it's all about it, when the episode ends, my interest kinda ends.
(Been watching Entertainer too, but I'm glad it ended, it dragged itself too long for my taste)

On weekends I have MotW and PS38 and both are my crack right now. MotW from the very beginning and PS38 from this week on.
I hope they both stay as good till the very end (I'm so happy MotW has 20 episodes, not 16 like a lot of viewers including me thought - more Kim Sae-ron and Yoon Shi-yoon, together or separately is always a great thing).

Oh, and I'm anticipating W too.
The premise seems so unique and intricate that I won't be able to pass on it. I don't really like Lee Jong-seok, but I like Han Hyo-joo so gotta watch it.

I dont think the first ep of PU 38 is boring at all. but then I wasnt watching purely for SIG. I adore him, but I really liked the premise and I've always been hella impressed with Ma Dong Seok's acting in films. So it was more of a complete package kind of deal that drew me in than just one person. But both MDS and SIG have charismatic presences (but very diff types of energy which is so great to see played off each other when they finally really meet in ep2)
I can see why people were impatient, but boring it aint! If nothing else at least do a skim watch of ep 1 (some of the set up IS needed if u actually care about the plot lol) and then watch ep 2 in its entirety. (esp cuz of the amazing car chase scene!) so yeah I say esp if u like MDS, give it a try this week instead waiting for next. (i'm so ready for ep 3 tho AHHHH)

Some people called the first episode of Police Unit/Squad 38 boring so I decide to watch the second episode and it was pretty good. I like how the show is made. Do I need to watch the first episode for understanding the back story? I guess the second episode was good on its own.

I don't think you need to watch episode 1, but if you want to get more backstory I think just reading the episode recap would be fine. To be honest, most of what was in ep. 1 was briefly touched on in episode 2.

WTF with the police Unit 38 -> ratings.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

The rating is actually good as the first 2 eps. You can't compared it with other channels. OCN doesn't have a viewer base as big as TVN (this rating can be considered as good in TVN 2 years ago), especially it's aired 11pm Korean time. Rating of this time slot of more than 1 is not bad. Hopefully it will get better and better

0

Required fields are marked *

Aye the rating is fine for tvN's sister channel especially at that time slot.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't understand, so OCN is affiliated to TVN? Is there some kind of different positioning between these two channels?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

OCN and tvN are owned by the same company (CJ E&M) so they are sister channels. Shows on tvN are less daring than OCN shows. tvN appeals more to the general cable viewers. OCN's shows are usually on later 11pm and 12 midnight so anything above 1% is considered good rating.

Fri/Sat shows - Dear my Friends (tvN) and Police Unit 38 (OCN) looks like they are competing with each other but they actually not. They are on at different time slot. DMF at 9:30pm and Unit 38 at 11pm. CJ E&M would not have their channels best shows compete with each other.

tvN's Dear my Friends is in direct competition with Mirror of the Witch (Fri/Sat) and Flower in Prison on Saturday. You may have noticed that the ratings for Dear my Friends and Mirror is usually lower on Saturday because it has a big scale sageuk to compete with.

0

I just checkout ratings of the OCN previous two shows Neighborhood Hero and Vampire Detective this year. Police Unit 38 really has an excellent start. Hopefully the team can keep up the good work. I don't like this writer ( I know people love bad guys, but it's not my cup of tea), but the first 2 eps are better than I expected.

I wasn't into Bad Guys either but I liked Vampire Prosecutor.

I hope Oh Man Suk's role has more screen time here.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

yeah but also it aired on TVN as well (at an even later time) so the combined ratings for ep 1 were over 3% and likely bigger for ep 2. But yeah dont worry, its not a flop for the timeslot and channels by a long shot. (esp if the ratings taken so far are for the live watching numbers and not the dvr/streaming watchers)

If you can get over the near death experiences between the hero and villain and call it luck then you'll probably ride with Jackpot till the end.
Yeo Jin-goo's acting alone will make you want to stay. He is fantastic as the young king Yeongjo. Daddy Sukjong (Choi Min-soo) is all kinds of amazing too.
If you love history then you'll find parts of it refreshing and intriguing.

Why did Lucky Romance's ratings go from 9.8 --> 8.7? After seeing 9.7% ratings for Wed, I am almost so sure it will finally cross the 10% for Thur episode, but it went even down??

I'm just praying it will hit that 10% mark this week. It deserves it. Je Su Ho deserves it!

Because maybe a lot of people cant connect with the female main lead chraracter. And the ending at episode 7 is kinda make people down.
Its so unfortunate, because ep 8 in my opinion is the best episode so far. I replay almost Je Su Ho antics in this ep.

That jump in master of noodles' ratings though :) finally people are realizing it's a drama worth your time. I highly recommend it, it might look a little violent at first but it'll get better, it touches human relationships more (father-son,father-daughter, etc...) than violence.

So I follow Sung Hoon from Five Children on Instagram. He doesn't post much but he dropped a really good video yesterday. In this week's 2nd episode there's a scene where he's sitting on the couch with his girlfriend and when his brother is about to come in he's suddenly gone. What they broadcast was her just looking around and he was gone.

What he posted on Instagram is a behind the scene shot of him essentially snaking over the arm of the couch and crawling on the floor behind it to get out of her line of sight. It's a shame they didn't use that cut! It was hilarious!
