Han Ye-ri considering upbeat JTBC roommate drama Age of Youth

Ooh, here’s promising news: Han Ye-ri (Six Flying Dragons) is in talks to return in a new drama, and the writer is one I’d be happy to welcome back to dramaland: Park Yeon-sun, who’s back with her first series in four years with a JTBC drama titled Age of Youth.

Admittedly writer Park’s last drama was probably her weakest (2012’s offbeat Wild Romance), but I can easily look past it because of the strength of her past projects, such as chilling high school mystery White Christmas, quirky adventure drama Mixed-Up Investigative Agency, and thoughtful romance Alone in Love.

This new drama, which changed its working title from Belle Epoque to Age of Youth, is described as a cheerful, upbeat, youthful drama featuring five women roommates living in the same house, each with her own personality, dating style, taste in men, and area of expertise. It’ll deal with a variety of issues that modern women deal with, whether it’s dating or sex or interpersonal relationships.

The series will clock in at an efficient 12 episodes, and has secured a weekend slot as JTBC’s next Friday-Saturday drama. Writer Park has reportedly already completed all of the scripts, and directing will be PD Lee Tae-gon of JTBC dramas Beloved Eun-dong, Your Neighbor’s Wife, and Dowager Queen Insoo.

The description is broad enough that it’ll be difficult to predict what kind of story will come out of it, but I trust this writer to deliver a thoughtful script and well-planned-out plotting. And I’m always glad to see shorter series too, because sometimes a nicely compact run is what the story needs, and I like to see dramas allowing for the story to dictate its length, rather than the other way around.

Age of Youth will follow Mirror of the Witch and premieres in July.

Han Ye-ri is love, even though i only saw her in Six Flying Dragons. She made her character there memorable. ... I admire young actresses (or actors) who are not afraid to say no to numerous drama offers. Park Bo Young is another one. And when they do pick a drama, you know it's worth watching. So, I'll be watching this one if she confirmed it.

I first saw her in The Commitment, which was airing on a plane. She stole that show with the greatest of ease.

Han Ye-ri and Kim Go-eun are show stealers. Give them a good script with sufficient screen time and they'll own it.

I love Park Bo-young too but she hasn't done much in Chungmuro since Werewolf. I would've love to see her with Ha Jung-woo in With God but I think she was already committed to a project which didn't turn out well.

Even her role in Haemoo was great.

Yes she was hreat in Haemoo (Sea Fog) and leave it to the foreign critics to praise her talents. She is hardly mentioned in film promotions in Korea but she is usually the show stealer.

Song Joong Ki was supposed to be her leading man but he was shipped off to the army.
I was kind of disappointed because Bong Joon-ho was the producer and screenwriter. He is as praiseworthy as Park Chan-wook in Korea and among the Hollywood film critics. Those kind of opportunities is hard to come by.

"...whether it’s dating or sex..."

Is it just me or does that last part of the quote seem kind of bold and daring for a kdrama? If it actually follows through, I wonder how it'll be received and how they'll handle such topics. The only drama that comes to mind that dared to be open about that topic was The Lover and I don't think it really managed to be a commercial success.

So it'll be interesting to see if they stick with that statement or if they'll chicken out lol. The premise sounds interesting and fun, I just hope it won't be too much like 'Sex and the City takes over Seoul', 'cause the world really doesn't need another Sex and the City.

Well, it's JTBC. There has been more daring love scenes in their dramas than I've seen from tvN.

I think CJ E&M prefers Mnet when it comes to their more restricted/ daring dramas instead of tvN.

I still don't know too much about the different companies, thanks for the interesting observations on it! :)

I just looked up JTBC's programs and Witch Hunt is one of them, so it does seem like you're right about them being more daring. They say all sorts of stuff on that show, even Hong Ki was surprised at the kind of things they said and questions they asked, when he went on there the first time lol!

YESSS!!!

I am Ecstatic! I love her to pieces. She is one of my favorite film actress. I am glad that she passed on Noodles. JTBC (more freedom for the writer) and Queen In-soo's director is more promising.
I like Park and the fact that the script is almost completed is a good sign.

So this basically means that she is done filming "Chunmong."
In the meantime "The Hunt" with Jo Jin Woong and Ahn Sung-Ki will be release this month. Can't wait to see it.

I believe Gong Seung-yeon's getting a lot of positive feedback for Noodle, which is encouraging for a young actress (and shows exactly why Ahn Pan-seok cast her in Grapevine as a total rookie). But I'm still glad Han Ye-ri isn't in that so she's free to do other projects.

Chungmuro has some young actresses with major potential right now. I hope the future brings them the roles they deserve, because they could make an amazing next-gen, especially away from tv and the constraints of the medium/audience.

The great Ahn Pan-seok has good eyes for talents. I am glad Gong Seung-yeon is getting some buzz for her acting. She did well in Six Flying Dragons too even with limited screen time.

Han Ye-ri and Lee Je-Hoon would've been great but I'm glad they both dropped out and give growing actors a chance to shine.

I've been waiting for some news like this all year!!! Park Yeon-seon is one of my very favorite writers and jTBC is practically the greats' renaissance channel lol...I mean, JHY with Queen Insoo and Cruel Palace, Ahn Pan-seok with A Wife's Credentials and The End of the World, Kim Woon-kyung with Yoo-na's Street....really really hope this follows in that vein!! Now excuse me while I go jump up and down :D

I was impressed with her in SFD. That was quite a change considering I laughed when I first read she was cast as Goryeo's beauty of the century. I was even more impressed when Music captain in King of mask singer said he wanted to see Han Ye-ri on the stage (among ALL if he has a choice). lol
btw I loved all the dramas with posters above.

Auw..This news alone is good enough to draw my attention. I love some of JTBC drama and it has its own unique style.

Since this is story more about women, can I want Kim So Eun to be among the main casts on this drama too? She is done filming her webdrama. So she is free and available now. I want to see her in a proper drama and in a good role too.

Yes me too. I am not really mind about her love line, I want to see her in a new and fresh character. Getting to work with the best team will a bonus..I hope we get to see her expanding her acting career this year, either small or big screen.

It annoys me to no end that Kim So-eun and Park Eun-Bin are being overlooked a lot when it comes to sageuks.
Why can't they let the young teen talents grow up first and let the 20+ capable actresses take the lead roles with all these grown leading men?

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, that would be nice. Or they could give roles to the right 20-somethings, that would be a start...KSE and PEB could do a lot with roles getting handed to less talented peers. At least Kim Yoo-jung, Kim Sae-ron, and Kim So-hyun have the skills to back up their casting. I get that star power is a thing, but it's sad.

This writer has written two of my ALL time favorite dramas - all time - out of over 200! So, yeah, I'm watching this based on that alone! White Christmas and Mixed Up Investigative Agency! Woohoo!

Hopefully Han Ye-ri accepts!

Wow, that writer's past credits are strong! (Don't know what happened with Wild Romance though).

I'm a little confused though. Other articles mentioned that the house the women live in would be haunted, and that they would bond over that. Has that part been dropped? It's what picked up my interest initially...

This actually kind of reminds me of a recent super popular Chinese drama, Ode to Joy about, well, five girls who live on the same floor of an apartment building all with different jobs, personalities, and tastes in men, etc and their modern-day struggles.
12 episodes isn't much time to tell five peoples' stories though.

This sounds like it could be interesting.

I just recently watched a great C-Drama called Ode to Joy about five women living on the same floor of an apartment complex.

The synopsis of this potential K-Drama is pretty similar to Ode to Joy's: "Story revolves around five women living in Apartment Ode to Joy and their experience in love and work as an independent modern woman."
