The teacher has a crush on SBS’s Doctors

Uh, so based on the second teaser for Doctors, it’s teacher Kim Rae-won who has a lingering old crush on student Park Shin-hye, not the other way around. I don’t know how I feel about that, but I’m just going to hold on to the idea that the crush lingered as a regret for ten years because they couldn’t fathom doing anything about it in the past. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Please don’t prove me wrong, Show.

SBS’s new Monday-Tuesday drama stars Park Shin-hye as a troubled gangster teen who meets biology teacher Kim Rae-won in the middle of his own career crisis, following his first table death as a surgeon. They help shape each other’s futures and then reunite as adults when they’re colleagues in the neurosurgery department of the same hospital, where they’ll get a second chance at love. Lee Sung-kyung plays Park Shin-hye’s rival from high school all the way to adulthood, and Yoon Kyun-sang will be a sunbae who falls for Park Shin-hye’s unpredictable ways.

The second teaser opens with Kim Rae-won watching Park Shin-hye through a window, back in the past when she was his student. He narrates, “You only discover the value of what’s precious after you lose it. I didn’t know it then, that normal, everyday life was precious. When I think about you, I always remember the last moment I saw you. I should’ve held on to you then.”

Fast-forward to the hospital years later, and this time he reaches out to her. His narration continues, “Going crazy when in love is proof that I’m revitalized. It’s abnormal not to go crazy when in love.” He surprises her by grabbing her hand, and when she calls him crazy, he holds on and says, “Let’s stay like this for ten seconds… I’ve waited ten years.” But like, you dated other people, right? Just sayin’…

Doctors premieres Monday, June 20.

Teacher and student love line is a bit sensitive
But I personally don't have issue with it here
People can't really control their feeling but can only control their actions. And he chose to wait.

As long as they don't date when she was in high school and they both are adult, I'm totally okay with it

Personally, I don't like teacher and student love line because I find it creepy but you are right and I find your comment quite sensible. I agree that that you can't control feelings but that is fine as long as they are together when they are both adult.

I got a feeling that they had mutual feelings for each other in the past and the school got to know about it or Seo Woo "let the cat out of the bag", that's why he had to let her go. At the same time, he had to leave the school because of this. I guess that's why he went back to neurosurgery but as a Professor after 10 yrs. You know that something went wrong between them from the end of the 1st teaser when Hye Jung said "whether it's hate or love".

Age gap is 9 and she is 18, he is 27 when they met.

Both are adult so I don't see why people are freaking out over this...
She isn't minor and they didn't date when he was her teacher

They met again when she is 31 and he is 40

Hahaha that description! I knew teachers like that, too! But for some reason I always crushed on the really smart ones.

As for the age difference, KRW's character teaches bio after a crisis (someone dies while he's performing surgery). So he's maybe late 20s at the very least.

If some doctor beanies or med students here can tell us...? What's the average or earliest age someone can work in O.R.?

Have you seen the japanese movie Close Range Love? Watch it and be forever traumatised. The English teacher kissed the high school student UNDER THE TEACHER'S TABLE IN CLASS IN FRONT OF ALL HER CLASSMATES who were oblivious of what was happening right under their noses because he kissed her UNDER THE TEACHER'S TABLE!!!! So utterly gross.

0

Watch it and be forever traumatised.

No. :P

0

dr.beanie replying to call here.....

Unlike the us you get into the or a bit early in the asian countries but still he would be a minimum of 25 if he had that table death during residency or 27 if he was an actual independent surgeon.

currently it sounds like the second option to me.

0

Thanks, naimisha!

So if his character is 27, then the O.R. death is probably one of his first operations as an official surgeon...

At my university you start student teaching junior year so it could be even younger. That being said the comments have already provided the age difference

Required fields are marked *

I do agree. Your comments are well put. Teacher-student relationship is a sensitive issue but in this case, ethics was not breached. If a relationship will develop after 10 years which the teaser suggests, they are both adults and professional and I believe there's no issue here. I know plenty of cases where a teacher and his student got married after the student graduated and had her own career and they met again later in life.

0

Required fields are marked *

As a teacher, I don't think it's okay. I guess people sometimes can't control their feelings, but teachers should never put themselves in that position where those feelings develop. The fact that he still likes her after 10 years seems problematic to me. I think it would've been a different, more palatable story had they met as adults again and developed feelings then.

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree. It's the pining for her for 10 long years that is off-putting for me. Most people don't nurse a crush for that long, unless it was not just a crush. Now I wonder if something actually did happen to them in high school.

While restraint is respectable, the problem lies in the impulses. Improper impulses need to be addressed and resolved at the root level. The whole predator culture is based on - and justifys itself by - the notion that you can't control your feelings, so why try. In reality, it's a mental illness and that's what therapists are for.

It’s always a bit of an issue whenever a teacher-student relationship is brought up because it’s deemed taboo. It’s just the worry that there is this grown-up teacher and there’s this underage, youthful innocent student and the love story is one that seems too pedophilic, so that’s why the ‘ten years’ seems such a creepy statement to say. With the whole ‘love theme’ going on, it’s inevitable that the student-teacher love story will be heavily romanticised, and I’m just scared that it might influence and affect some people to believe that relationships between teachers/authority figures and students are normal and, even, *shudder* romantic in real life.

Well, at least they’re adults, and that’s when the loveline officially began. I’m hoping this show can somehow avert the pedophilia spectrum and convince us love is love is love, no matter your previous occupation or your age is, without inevitably promoting underage love story.

yes but this is set in south korea and 20 in korean age is usually 18/19 in international age. south koreans ALWAYS use their own age system rather than the international, normal system of adding one year whenever your birthday comes by. she was very much a minor when she met him, so i'm glad he's at least waiting until she's an adult and no longer his student.

0

But the teaser said he waited 10 years so 31 minus 10 means she was 21 when he wanted to reveal his love for her???

It could be that the time span for high school part is 3yrs. Then, something big happen tht cause them to go on with their own lives for the next 10yrs. Based on jin seo woo character description, she cant believe tht hye jung end up being a neurosergeon after all the lala during their high school yr so i guess sth big happen back then

They're only a few years apart in real life, so hopefully the drama will play it as him being a young new teach or something...OR it'd be pretty hilarious is she was a super senior because of all her gang activity.

The age thing isn't an issue with me. It's when it's put in the context of a teacher-student relationship that the red flags go up. Unfortunately, that happens way too often, but with even younger students.

At least they're adults and he didn't like her when she was 13 or something.

From what i can understand, Ji hong has unknowingly had a soft spot for hye jung, which he released only later when they parted ways. And as he has got a second chance now that they meet again as adults, he wishes to hold on to it.

The teaser, the synopsis and just everything about this drama are arising my interest in this drama more and more. Its like i am seeing a new kim rae won and park shin hye. I am excited. I actually want to know how the writer is going to carry the plot.

ps: Can't take my eyes of shin hye's poster. She keeps getting prettier and prettier. ^^

@Mary

No mary, i feel like its one sided on his part. Like he didn't realize she was precious to him,not until they parted ways from this particular teaser. Whether hye jung(shin hye) had any crush on him is still unclear for me. But her voiceover in the 1st teaser did say something about "the past always find its way back, whether its love or grudge". I can only feel that both influence one another in the drama. ^^

Also, i remember, hye jung(shin hye) is supposed to have an one-sided love on Ji-soo character(or is the other way around) from the synopsis i read. Either way, i am still clueless about the love lines as of now. lol. Have to wait and see how it unfolds. :)

I feel like I read the teaser in a completely different way than most.

It's being read as romantic, which it is heavily implying, but KRW's waxing poetic about PSH and saying that he should have held on, saw what is precious to him, etc. can maybe be seen as platonic as well considering the fact he's supposed to be a mentor and they share a special connection from her school days.

Plus, the voice over for his character is in the present, so when he's talking about falling in love, I thought it was pretty clear he didn't fall in love until they met the second time.

But, honestly, it's a teaser thats meant to tease the story, so I'll reserve judgement until then.

I think he realized how much she truly meant to him after they parted ways and that he couldn't do a thing about it was his regret. I'm sticking to this version because crushing on her when in school is too weird, maybe not unnatural or even unheard of but just weird for me to imagine.
So he meets her after years and hopes for a new beginning, that's the good part. And things might not unfold like the teaser in the drama. Teasers can be misleading. Especially early teasers like this one which I find a bit vague to be honest.

Hello DramaMama the term Daddy long legs was described by Judy Abbot the main character in the story in whom she is writing letters .
Why this description :
Because for her he is like real dad who helped her scince she was in the orphange until she entered the college and long legs bcz when she tried to see him she saw only his shadow elongating .
Plot Summary ;
On a trip to France, millionaire Jervis Pendelton sees an 18 year old girl in an orphanage. Enchanted with her, but mindful of the difference in their ages, he sponsors her to college in New England. She writes him letters, which he doesn't read. After 3 years, he goes to visit her at a dance, not telling her that he is her benefactor. They fall in love, but the usual movie-type difficulties get in the way before they can get together at the end

Required fields are marked *

What? Wait... that's not exactly it! He didn't see Judy and fall in love. He just read her satiric essay by accident while he was making a donation to Judy's orphanage. Judy was always getting in trouble for not being "institutionalized" enough. So her essay was making fun of the difficult life of orphans. (Mostly about the inspectors/directors and the shame of having to wear donated dresses to school.) That's when he decides to give her a scholarship. But it's anonymous. The only requirement is for her to write letters to him (as practice) and to never expect replies.

Jervis' character is a philanthropist so I think he didn't "sponsor" her with the intent of ending up with her. He was just one of her scholars. I think it was even mentioned that he usually sends boys to college, but Judy's essay was too funny to pass up.

Judy's funny letters eventually make him curious enough to visit her in disguise and they become close after that. But it's not until the last 2-3 pages of the book when Judy discovers DLL and her friend Jervis are the same person. She always assumed DLL was a grumpy old man who hates girls and hates talking to people. LOL

I'm sort of confused by this, because Mary you just described the Daddy Long Legs plot I know and love, but I see it mentioned so often in kdramas and it seems to be a slightly different story for them- is there another version I'm missing? Also DAddy Long Legs is not that popular in the US, it seems much more well known in Korea for some reason...

0

Oh sh*t, I forgot there was a Daddy Long Legs KR movie and it's.... O___O I think I tried to forget this because it was so tragic and WTF (for me who was a fan of both the cartoon and novel).

BTW, I looked again and Soso's description seems to be from (yet) another version movie from 1955

Ji Hong (KRW) does not realize the importance of Hye Jung (PSH) in his life....ten years back. It could be that he realizes that fact only when he sees her in the present..........dozing on the bench.

I feel .....he does not say his feelings aloud.
It only plays out in his mind. He is really Hye Jung's "Daddy long legs"

The reality is the way this scene plays out in the Doctors first teaser where Hye Jung instinctively responds to his hand on her head by the judo move....and is then surprised to see him after so long.

Teacher-student love-line will always be controversial but the characters descriptions state Hye-Jung is 18 and Ji-Hong is 27 so they are adults already. If she was 16, I might be more nervous. Anyway, let's see how the writer handles this sensitive topic in the drama. I agree with some of you above that Ji-Hong doesn't realise he loves Hye-Jung till they depart since love comes in a wide spectrum.

Either that or I'm going to pretend that the narrative is being cut and slice to think that he had a crush on her for 10 years when it may not be that case once the drama air. It could be 10 years of regrets towards her that he wasn't able to save the precious life that hold dear to her. LOL!

With all due respect to Park Shin-hye, because I have nothing against her, but .....

.... she can change into a gangster for a drama

.... she can change and become a doctor for a drama

.... but as shown in the second to last picture, she can't change her perennial "deer-caught-in-headlights look" for a drama

Isn't it too early to judge from a 51 second teaser!?! She naturally has beautiful big eyes. If she had small slitty eyes I'm sure you would complain of something else. Also, that look is not deer lost in forest look. It's more of a surprise look to me. I'd like to know what look you want for a surprise look??

Because you didn't watch the teaser so her look is surprising look what she should change next time to convince you ??

Abc & soso -

I do agree with you, she does have beautiful eyes. I just don't often see emotion behind them. From the teaser, I also see that she is trying to convey a look of surprise, but to me, she doesn't sell it, as they say.

It's just those little intangible things, I guess, and just different things we all look at, nothing more.

I'm sure overall she'll do well and hopefully we'll all enjoy a good drama.

I really can't imagine how she should act different in that scene- which in the context- she is surprised.
It's too bad that you can't connect to it emotionally but that doesn't mean she didn't it wrong.
At least 99% of people didn't have issue with it.

Kim Rae Won is a superb actor and I hope Park Shin Hye will learn a lot from him.

The premise reminds me of Fruits Basket, Tohru parents story. The girl is also a gangster and is a high school student, meanwhile the guy used to be her high school teacher. I'm not usually a fan of teacher-student story with the male much older than the girl, but I loved that Tohru parents' story. So maybe I'll love this story, too

When I first heard Doctors summary, I thought it might go to Fruits Basket Tooru's parents way. It seems to really go to that way then

Oh my gosh, that completely slip my mind but yes, it is just like Fruit Baskets in term of Tohru's parent.

i dont have any trouble with student-teacher loveline. its creepy indeed in real life because usually the student still underage.
but in drama/movie/book/anime its thrilling. and the age gap.. i dont think there is trouble. once upon a time yoo ah in is a student 20 years younger than his beloved teacher kim hee ae, and they're oh so awesumly hot :D

Shinye looks sooo skinny now make her face so small, and it's first time to seing her wear such a red lispstick on a drama and the make up too, for making her looks mature but it's nice to see her chalanges her self..... I'm enough too see Yoon Kyunsang on this site why he always do a drama with the top stars in the begining of his career, I'm tired seing his face, that even not handsome at all, his acting too soo soo not special

Nah I'm out. All the power to those who see nothing wrong with this. But I got way too many red flag predator sirens and surprisingly Kayne West's voice saying "he got in early" going off in my head.

Thank lawds the man quit teaching. What if there ever came a student he couldn't "hold it in" for. Then 10 years of "waiting"...

As a high school teacher, I'm with you. Way too creepy, I don't care how old the "student" is.

Not to mention why ANY almost 30-year-old would want to be in a relationship with a teenager, teacher or not. It is just too weird.

But this kind of love does happen in real life and the age gap sometimes is bigger. Look at famous stars like Johnny Depp, Leonardo Dicarprio. They go for daughter's age and yes, I do puke.

Like someone pointed out earlier, we can't choose who you fall in love with.
We are lucky to love someone with appropriate age and positions but it's not always the case in life.
No one chooses to love a certain person that they shouldn't... It is creepy but there isn't anything they could do. Like people didn't choose to be born gay?

At least they didn't start a relation then and wait until she is mature.
It's much better than many cases that they didn't , and even get married right after, which I have seen in life.

I am interested in seeing this drama because I liked his last drama Punch.

Student/teacher relationships are a huge turn-off for me (despite loving both Gong Hyo Jin and Gong Yoo, I could not finish Biscuit Teacher Star Candy, and that was a very chaste and sweet drama) but since this does take place 10 years later, I don't think it'll bother me TOO much.

I think the criticism of Park Shin-hye in this particular teaser is unwarranted... I don't know how else she was supposed to act. Granted, I've only ever seen her in You're Beautiful which didn't exactly put her acting abilities to the test (although she was adorable... dim but adorable, I honestly loved her flailing, she was like spaghetti in that drama LOL) so I'm 100% willing to give her a shot to judge her real acting abilities. I thought she looked great in the first teaser as a gangster! And she was fine in this one.

WHY IS THIS EVEN NECESSARY? Why do kdrama leads have to almost always be connected somehow in their past?

Im not really into teacher-student love lines because theyre kinda creepy -and this for some reason made me think of the news of that teacher getting pregnant with her teen student's baby- but if somewhere in dramaland theres apparently a love line between gorgeous fetus Kim so hyun and not so fetus Taecyeon, then I think I can handle this love line...
