Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 18-24, 2016

There weren’t many surprises early in the week, with everyone pretty much sticking to the trends we’ve seen in weeks prior—Doctors remained way ahead of the pack with ratings nearing 20%, while Monster and Beautiful Mind took second and third place, respectively. Over on cable, Bring It On, Ghost continued to do very well for itself, even if this week’s numbers were ever so slightly lower than last week’s.

The big premiere of the week undoubtedly belonged to W—Two Worlds as far as hype and general buzz, and it opened to fairly good numbers. It’s predecessor, Lucky Romance, routinely pulled in relatively low numbers, so ending the week at 9.5% means victory for the inventive new show. Uncontrollably Fond continues to hold the lead, but not by much—it remains to be seen whether W will prove a worthy competitor.

Over on the weekend cable circuit, Age of Youth premiered in the slot left by Mirror of the Witch to much the same numbers at first, only to drop below the 1% mark for its second episode. It’s The Good Wife that’s proving to be the dark horse, as it continues to pull steadily higher and higher with each week. This is probably a bad time to be behind on everything, isn’t it?

I think the reason Police Unit 38's ratings are low on Friday compared to Saturday are that on Friday only half an hour later tvN airs the same episode. However on Saturday only OCN airs the next episode whereas tvN airs the same episode on Sunday.

I'm really rooting for the success of "W". I hope it CRUSHES "Uncontrollably Fond" in the ratings war.

And please Drama Gods, let it be good until the end.

I'm with you on this. So rooting for the entire cast and crew. I believe in them and I have been a fan of the writer since Queen Inhyun's Man. My love was further solidified with Nine. God, I am sooo invested in W!! I don't know how many times I've seen the first 2 episodeds! Haha!! :D

Thats exactly how i feel too. Love Queen in hyun's man to bits and nine was equally riveting. Then add a wonderful performance thus far by our two leads, the first 2 ep was daebak. So many of us are rooting and praying for double digits ratings this week and hope will reach 20 by mid run.

I hope W does good and the story only gets better and better each week, but I don't need it to crush or beat any show in particular. As long as the ratings stay good, it's ok.

I only want the ratings to go up week after week just to prove that dramas with an atypical storyline can also succeed on the big 3.

My hope too. The story is great and I have faith in LJS (and the entire W team of course). He pulled impressive ratings before. However, based on previous shows, there are downright bad shows (and yes even Koreans agree that they're bad) with higher ratings and it may just happen in this case. Those are moments when I scratch my head and question the Korean audience. I am hoping for the best for W because man, the cast and crew and the material are great! I hope it stays the same until the end.

OK I feel people on here are really condescending when it comes to Korean audiences tastes. What you mention doesn't only happen in Korea! I could rattle a handful of bad TV shows that are big successes here in the US AND I could list so many good shows that had low ratings and we're CANCELLED before they should have been. It is what it is. Also IMO, MOST well made shows of different genres do get decent to good ratings and a certain amount of hype in Korea that encourages stations to produce better content.

0

@Deb. Very true, there's no justice in America, either. I could list a ton of shows that got axed way before their time while complete crap continues to chug along. For a recent example, The Americans has been in an existential crisis every single season, even if FX is being pretty generous with it now.

0

@Deb <3

Agreed and big Thank you!

I want W to keep rising, not least because high ratings = less potential interference from MBC on the story as the writer wants it to be told.

I completely agree with you. People are being so gross and condescending when they talk about not understanding Korean audiences.

No offense to BM fans, even though a lot of them have been pretty damn rude, but I really don't understand why they can't wrap their heads around the fact that viewers would much rather like to watch a fun, slice of life drama, with a great otp/cast/characters as opposed to sitting through macabre geniuuuuus man pain and with a lead actress/character who is not up to par.

Yes, the script for BM is better and more creative, but I enjoy watching Doctors a lot more than BM, which is probably what happened with Korean audiences as well.

Bottomline, people need to stop being so dense about this and get over it.

thank you for this comment srsly. and drama fans arent the only ones to do this but its infuriating every single time it happens. I'm ambivalent about both Doctors and BM but its pretty obv why the former is more popular than the latter. plus BM is essentially a procedural where if u dont have much interest in medical mysteries, there is definitely not enough OTHER things happening unrelated to medical shit to hold a viewer's interest. whereas Doctors mainly uses its hospital as a backdrop than anything else. from what i've seen ne way. i'm not even knocking either drama, since i have my issues with both. and am not a fan of medical genre in general but people acting like BM is somehow masterpiece theater to Doctors' trashy reality tv show is so absurd to me???
BM isnt /that/ great to deserve this much defensiveness and ofc people would rather watch a fun love story with a winsome heroine and an attractive male lead (kim rae won does nothing for me but i am a minority in that respect haha I love PSH tho.) whereas Jang Hyuk's hero is obv not as "swoony" and gonna be honest but Park So Dam or at least her chara in BM is just lacking on so many levels.
and tbh i think the drama getting cut down can only help its quality. just cut down on the case of the week shenanigans and bam ur good. (I can go into a whole other rant about DOTS and IRY and all the elitist foolishness that went on there but i'll refrain haha)

I agree with everything you said. BM is a creative, new approach to kdramas...but I've been watching American and British medical/crime/psychological thrillers for yearssss and BM can't even be compared. However, kdramas can do slice and life and romance really well, and make it entertaining, whereas other international shows can't.

As for the defensiveness, it's pretty obvious it's a mixture of three things - one, people genuinely liking the BM genre better, which is fine. Two, pity staning because the ratings are so atrocious. Three, people not being able to handle the fact that "subpar" "overrated" romance, slice of life drama, starring PSH, of all people, is beating ifan favorite Jang Hyuk, and "Chungmuro Darling" and supposed "Monster Rookie" Park So Dam. Apparently because she was in that one KDW movie and some indie/prestige projects in Chungmuro, we ALL need to proclaim she's an amazing actress and not completely and utterly overhyped and overrated...But, I digress.

If the ratings were closer together, and PSH wasn't the lead in Doctors, there wouldn't be such over the top comments.

Also, full offense, if people really think BM is an underrated masterpiece that will go down as one of the best dramas in recent memory...They should work on getting some better taste.

0

Let's not forget: as international fans, we have the privilege to watch our shows when and where we want to, without having to adhere to the broadcasting schedule. There have been months were I was only watching Wednesday/Thursday dramas-- but ALL of the W/T dramas. Audiences viewing on the television have to make 1 choice about what they want to see FIRST, and that's the one that counts.

Further, many viewers of BM would agree that the 1st 4 episodes could be frustruating and that the drama really gained momentum in the 3rd week. As someone who watches all of my television through the internet, I have can give a show 2-3 weeks to grab my heart-- the Korean audiences who make up these polling numbers are in a different position.

0

yisoon.

Right. And maybe, well not maybe, but the case is that korean audiences are tuning into Doctors a lot more than BM.

Also, a note for international audiences.

People have been saying that BM is a "runaway hit" internationally, basically insinuating it's more of a hit internationally than Doctors.

It's harder to gauge, but Doctors has been sold to over ten countries...and I have no clue how many BM is sold too.

Also, if we want to look at something like Viki....for a drama people claim is so well loved over Doctors. BM has about over a thousand ratings, and around twenty thousand followers on viki...Doctors has close to four thousand ratings and over sixty thousand followers.

So....umm...yeah.

0

"Also, full offense, if people really think BM is an underrated masterpiece that will go down as one of the best dramas in recent memory…They should work on getting some better taste."

Now, now. Who is being a hollier than thou, condescening jerk ?

0

Big hug to you m'lady/m'lord who mentioned FX's The Americans here! I literally live for series like it (& Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, etc) - the kind which masterfully explores the complexity of humanity and poses thought-provoking question on what is it really to be good/bad as a human being AND is produced in the highest quality. They came with a price though; I find questioning humanity a little bit depressing if overdone ^^" So that's why I came to watch and enjoy kdramas like Doctors every now and then (even DoTS ehem) in which I seek some kind of light in all their dreamy fluffy pretty fairytale glory to balance the dark. Well I'm a Jedi like that.

But then, I stumble across Beautiful Mind. ldk about "better" (I personally hate this particular word tbh), but I find the approach in acting, characterization, and writing indeed very "different" from most kdramas in a way that delightfully resonates with my taste. Most importantly though, flawed it may be, for me it surprisingly manages to provide not only that kdrama-esque light I seek but also a quite thoughtful and grounded insight on human complexity, thus giving me an experience I almost never had before. This being a mere generic medical procedural drama fortunately never crosses my mind.

tldr.
1. Just because two things are different doesn't mean that one has to be better or worse than the other.. or that you must hate one to love the other.
2. Fans of BM, i second all these arguments on the fact that Korean audiences are not solely the one to blame. I know we're in a lot of pain, but gushing on other's fortune will never heal it. Let's just focus and count on our beautiful Wi-Fi couple for that OK? *winks*
3. I too have watched lots of series from all over the world for years, so yeah it's not like it's the best ever, but I hella love BM. It makes me happy. It's also been through a lot lately with the cut and all, so give it a lil break would you guys? Pretty please..?
4. On a hopefully more cheerful note, I hold both Jang Hyuk & Kim Raewon responsible for climate change bcs to me they're both so darn hot. Don't ever make me choose, it's a crime.

Peace, chingu. There's already too much bloodshed in this world as it is.

0

Keep the discussions polite, please.

0

Thanks for proving my point about BM fans haha....damn, the truth really does hurt.

0

@nara
If you haven't heard of it already, I also warmly recommend the TV series Black Mirror (showing the chilly combination of extremes in human emotion and technology) and Humans (searching for the human in the machine).

0

Stopped watching BM after 4 eps. Probably surprised why the ratings didn't continue to fall after that. (Die hard fans of JH?)

The plotline is illogical. (Caught a guy, beat him up, throw him out a van. Oops changed my mind, let's run him over, darn didn't quite kill him)

The character premise was completely turned around (beat cop who is so straightforward she would give herself a ticket for speeding then starts breaking all professional conduct rules, not to mention abandoning all sense of logic, stops using her presumed training in developing evidence, motive, opportunity etc when investigating a crime a that she isn't supposed to investigate) (supposedly un empathetic surgeon who would publicly call out his colleagues for incompetence suddenly decides to NOT to do the same to a cop who wrongly accused and arrests him)

Situational illogic (hospital lawyer did not ask for cops dismissal, homicide team allowing a non homicide cop to investigate)

At this point, the acting may be superb and the language shakespearesque (in Korean terms) but the series was a lost cause.... (To me)

0

Thank you. I don't understand why Doctors is to blame for Beautiful Mind's poor rating. I have yet to find Beautiful Mind beautiful or brilliant as some claimed it to be. Its poor rating only reflects its own popularity with the general public.

0

@YBM you watch Black Mirror too? omg apparently I'm not so alone in the world after all.. ^^ anyway I haven't heard of Humans so I just checked it out and it looks amazing! It is so in my watch list now, thank you so much for the recommendation :D

@ReallyBadDrama I actually was among the many who were extremely appalled by the first 4 episodes and seriously considered dropping it then. I decided to give it one more week though and I'm so grateful I did. If a drama could have redemption arc, BM does and it slays. Right now it is nothing like it was before. I warmly suggest giving it another chance, perhaps then you may see why the rating doesn't continue to fall and fade into oblivion (indicating some people stay watching and supporting it) like you said (this is my first JH drama btw :D).. but of course it's your choice. Peace :)

W and UF's ratings are both pretty sad considering the hype and press. I expected better for both.

Doctors is impressive, but then in some ways isn't since it doesn't seem to be able to really break out. It has a steady (big) audience, but seems like it stalled. Did the hype die? I don't hear people talk about it nearly as much as they did a few weeks ago.

I think W will rise but UF has really underperformed considering all the promo and hype. I'm not that surprised though because it doesn't have alot going for it. Lee Kyung Hee has written far better scripts than this and the cast is not up to par imo. *shrugs*

I think Doctors has hit its ratings ceiling tbh. Might pull in bigger numbers for the finale but I can't see it going much higher. It doesn't seem to have enough story for 20 episodes.

Yeah, I'm surprised by those ratings for UF - KBS marketed this as a clear ratings winner and secondary DotS. And yet it's not too far into double digits, barely hanging on to that top slot and there's a very real chance that W could snatch that ratings wig in coming weeks.

This isn't really any different from Lee Kyung-hee's earlier scripts but as someone pointed out, stories as tropey as LKH melodramas really need the leads to pull things off to tap into the emotional core of things. Which, by the sound of it..... isn't happening here.

I think UF has reached its cap. I mean so much hype and episode 6 got the same rating that Monster did on Tuesday. Can't imagine it going over 12%, and it will probably hover in the 10-11% for its run. If W has been getting the same word of mouth promotion in Korea as it's had among international fans, then it has the possibility of going up significantly higher, but I doubt it will get close to the 19% Doctors is getting. It is definitely a younger audience program. I hope I'm wrong though, because I love this drama. At a minimum, I hope it blows up in China. Because that means plenty of $$$ for everyone involved.

As long as UF continues to hover where it's at, I can see W continue to rise, if the word of mouth truly works in Korea.

Doctors is almost at twenty percent, even with Monster garnering eleven percent. W could also get those numbers even if UF continues to hover around eleven.

As for China, both Doctors and W and their leads, so LJS and PSH, always trend on weibo the days that their dramas air in Korea.

So, the hype for W is definitely there and I see it doing well in China. Plus, you have the fact that LJS has a Chinese drama that will be airing as well...so he has a really big and solid fanbase there.

0

Yes, I think W will go higher (though I wonder if it's too confusing for the general audience) but considering the epic fights between the fans of it and UF, I expected more than not even break double digits yet and UF to limp along. I guess we'll see next week how W really does. Both are lucky there isn't something else to watch. I do think UF is a disappointment from every angle though for KBS. The actors, the writing, the ratings...

And I agree. I think M/T dramas seem to have a loyal and steady following. Not much change going on there.

I feel like the viewing audience is mostly stuck on Doctors/Mon-Tues. It's kind of amusing to me that this relatively less-hyped drama is the one snatching all the weekday wigs while the far more hyped Wed-Thurs dramas can't get those ratings (though whether W can. remains to be seen)

It's hilariously ironic.

Everyone thought that the first part of summer would be dominated by W or UF....and here you have PSH basically pulling in a good nine to ten percent higher ratings than either of these two. She's not just winning, she's winning by a huge margin. Ifans remain pressed and salty over her career, so I'm loving the success she got with Doctors.

There's very much an underlying tone of "Why is a PSH drama, of all things, beating my oppars aka, KWB, Jang Hyuk, etc." Which makes this even more delicious.

So I hope she continues this slaughter.

UF was media played to the moon and back as the next hallyu hit, international phenomenon, and can't even hit fifteen percent yet and is stagnating.

I hope W continues to rise and gets great ratings though. It's by far the best drama on right now.

Required fields are marked *

Trust me, as a PSH fan it gives me life that a drama led by her is heading to 20 percent - and WITHOUT the backing of a star writer or a Hallyu-bait costar, so there is no way to discredit her success now.

And to be fair to W, its hype didn't start until relatively late in the game - but hopefully its ratings will rise, because it's absorbing as hell and fantastically imagined. As for UF.... I have to say, it really exposed just how important the leads' acting abilities and chemistry are to making Lee Kyung-hee dramas work.

My favorite thing out of all this were people saying that "PSH is only famous/successful because of her costars." "She's not good enough to act opposite KRW." etc., etc.

And NOW, the comments are complaining that she didn't let their oppar's drama succeed because she's "too popular" and the only reason Doctors is doing well is because of her.

My advice to these people is to pick a narrative and stick with it.

Totally agree about UF and W. UF benefited a lot with being aired two to three weeks before W, so I hope W increases and overtakes the number one spot soon. As for UF, it's one thing to have two leads with incredibly weak acting skills, but it's even more tragic that the leads are weak actors, on top of not delivering ratings with their supposed label as "top star trends." To me, it's incredibly telling that a drama with these names, and that was promoted for months on end, is basically doing the same numbers as Monster.

0

@forwhatitsworth - If people are complaining about PSH's popularity being the sole reason Doctors pulled ahead, that is legit hilarious considering UF with equally popular leads can't even get within kissing distance of Doctors' second-week ratings.

UF was clearly made and marketed to be the big melo hit of the summer but there's a big gap between intention and execution, and the casting is no small part of that. I'm a longtime Lee Kyung-hee and Kim Woo-bin fan, but this is the weakest drama I've ever seen from her, both in terms of script and leads. idt I've ever been as indifferent to the fate of a terminally ill hero or a perpetually poor heroine.

0

(and yes, Kim Rae-won is a great actor and very respected by Korean audiences but people are tuning in as much for PSH as him, by the sound of things - no way around that).

"Everyone thought that the first part of summer would be dominated by W or UF…."

By W? Where did that happen? Because reading knetizen (and inetizens) predictions before both aired, everyone was so sure that UF would be a monster hit and kill W in ratings. Knetizens talked down on W so much before it even aired that I drank the koolaid and assumed W had no chance, came to terms with it. They predicted a 7-9% rating for episode 1 and it came true.

Maybe W was hyped in the international fandoms, but not in Korea. Only now after 2 episodes that people are praising it and claim it'll 'overtake' UF, but who knows if internet praise will do much for its real ratings since realistically it skews older.

@soapbox - correct! correct! I'm a little at a loss why some people had the impression that W was hyped. it took some time before MBC released news after the casting confirmation, and some more time to put out teasers.

Nicely said. In fact many ppl were worried for W. Saying MBC is not marketing W enough. There wasnt much hype until the week before premier. And seems to have more international fans than domestic. But heres hoping that the first two episodes will draw in the korean audiences. The pd oso worried that it mighy be a bit confusing plotwise and hence little ahjuma fans. Hopefully now understanding the premise better the ratings will pick up

0

Yep. Go back and read all the fights in these ratings posts between KWB fans and LJS fans...and both dramas are kinda limping along right now while Doctors is doing much better, with less promotion to start with and a non-trendy male lead.

W hardly had any hype and press, if comparing to UF. They only began pouring out the trailers/PRs when it neared the airing date. at most, the ones doing most "press" for W were fans (specifically LJS fans who kept doing fanedits of W posters!)

I think W is garnering attention just now.

But boy did this week's eps really pulled me in. Also, no spoilers but the end of ep 6 was the opposite of what I wanted augh. This drama is my new obsession.

I also really liked UF and W - both had different genres but I'm really enjoying both so I don't really care about the whole rating wars lol. I'm just here enjoying both rides.

I also felt like Doctors have stagnated a bit but that's probably because I hate the political drama.

the K version is much faster on the main story, so you may already know the main plot when you watch the original, but the original have more cases in between the main story and more depth for the supporting cast, still enjoyable imo...
I hope you gonna like it...

Yeah, from some of the comments on the previous recaps it seems like they've chosen a few storylines to focus on since they only have 16 eps after all. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, I have a feeling by the end of it all I'm gonna want a second season of the kdrama lol.

I'm really looking forward to watching the original & delve more into the characters, though! At least I won't have withdrawals once the kdrama ends, haha.

There is a lot of sitting around and talking and so far there is no subs available. Han Ye -ri doesn't have much screen time yet. The annoying and lesser talented one is having the most screen time.

Feeling bad for the ratings but it wasn't an appealing first episode.

Required fields are marked *

I'm not really concerned about Han Ye-ri not having as much screen time in the first episode because I feel like each episode is supposed to focus on a different roommate. In fact, I think her character not appearing a lot was kind of part of her character set-up.

Personally, once I start a character-driven drama like this one, I try to do away with my ideas of who is more talented & who deserves more screen-time. I actually think Park Hye-soo did a pretty good job getting me invested and I'm surprised you found her annoying.

And, while I get that the first episode may not be particularly exciting, I loved it. I like that it's about the girls dealing with the little conflicts in their lives and resolving them with the help of each other.

Agree. There is no such thing as first lead here and I do think that all leads will have equal screentimes. All 5 main roles has their own stories , and I think k the writer purposely made HYR's screen times lesser on first two episodes. For now HYR's role is quite mystery and cold. She doesnt talk much. Cannot wait to see her stories being explored later.

Apart from that, all characters are quite doing well and Park Hye Soo is quite good since she is newbie. She looks a bit like Baek Jin Hee.

While I do want Han Ye Ri and Park Eun Bin to have good role since they deserve it, but I started to invest with this drama because of the stories and characters . Hope the rating can pickup next week. It is quite sometime that I watch the drama because of the drama per se, not because of the actors. The theme of this drama draw me in.

0

You are mistaken. I'm not talking about Park, she is doing rather well. I was referring to Han Seung-Yeon.

I get it that it's more about characters but when it comes to the rating, appeals and hook factors comes first instead of later when only the dedicated few will be left watching.
When the rating drops below 1% then it's not a good sign.

Rating is just as important as a good story and good acting. They need advertisements to sustain the length of the show etc. Shows are being cut no matter how great they are.

0

I'm really nervous because I haven't gotten over how they cut "End of the World" which was a fantastic show. The best from jTBC imo.

0

Ah, okay. I had the impression that you'd only seen the first episode and, in that one, at least, Park had the most screen-time.

But this I agree with more. I get that Han Seung-yeon is one of the more talkative ones in the group so it makes sense that she's more involved in the first episode. But this is why I was also a little bummed when they chose to focus on her in episode 2, so I get where you're coming from. I am hoping to see a continued shift of focus in each episode so we see more of the others.

I am concerned for the ratings and definitely already worried about this show not hooking viewers, especially with the kind of format it's going for. But I personally really enjoyed it and, luckily for me, a 12-episode drama on JTBC has a much better chance of not getting cut. I guess I could wish it to be different just for the sake of ratings, but then I could be losing what I love about it.

I've been noticing a trend of cable ratings always taking a dip on Sat (except for PU38, so bravo there!). I'm hoping the ratings will at least go above 1% again next week.

0

Unit 38 has no competition at 11pm.

The Good Wife and Age of Youth are the ones that are competing with the highly favored weekend (Sat/Sun) family dramas with high ratings. That's why TGW and AoY's rating drops by a lot on Saturdays.

I was not even aware it was airing until I saw it here.

Unless I'm mistaken, wasn't there another drama that's supposed to replace Beautiful Gong Shim's timeslot? I recall seeing a preview for something called 'The Second Last Love' after watching the finale. Maybe it's scheduled for a later date though.

Haven't watched W yet but I love its concept. I might watch it when all the episodes are released though since it does seem marathon-worthy. Sorry, I'm sticking to watching UF live since I have the opportunity to do so~

That's why I never thought MOTW's rating was bad. Average of 2% is actually not bad based on JTBC rating history. But because it fell in the same time slot as Tvn weekend drama, people always think being worse than tvn is bad. Nowadays tvn is invincible to other cable channels

I don't think it would have made much difference. It's hard to sell this genre with black magic, politics (if there was any) and some kind of romance between a young teen princess and the famous historical Doctor Heo.

They could have gone all fictional like Moon Sun and heavy on romance between 2 adults then maybe it would've done a lot better in ratings.

tvN is a lot smarter with their shows and which time slot to place them.

They put their current strongest show (Good Wife) on Fri/Sat slot because it'd most likely survive the competition against well established family dramas on Saturdays.
Bring It On, Ghost may not be able to handle competition at this time slot so tvN put Ghost on a (Mon/Tues) slot at 11pm with no competition.

Since OCN is tvN's sister channel. Good Wife and Unit 38 can not be on the same time slot. It wouldn't make any sense for the two channels to compete with each other.

I'm hesitant to ask it here or not but is it possible to MANIPULATE ratings????

( I read in some comments on Naver & others that something smells fishy & they may have manipulate rating for wed-thur dramas, they said the real time viewership rating for W was twice more than rating for UF, while the AGB rating for W was even lower than UF, Real time rating may won't be that much accurate but not this much difference, I don't care to compare these two dramas because I hate to accuse a special case, I just bring it as an example, but it really made me curious if it is possible to manipulate the ratings in general.)

I think Tnms had scandal of manipulating ratings. However, real time ratings, agb and tnms ratings most likely use different sample of audience so the ratings bound to be different. They dont exactly measure all the household in korea with a tv, they use a sample of X amount to measure and gauge the % of people watching the drama.

I read somewhere that real time ratings use sample of 700 people while i am assuming agb is using a bigger sample considering it is more commonly used for comparison.

Thank you so much for info, TBH I can see why some netizen expected more rating for W according to its internet buzz after first two episodes , while it seems rating is more important financial wise for production companies rather than showing the popularity of a drama, so it is justifiable if these kind of manipulations happen, I should confess I have not trust in entertainment industry which is a unfair industry not only abou rating but in many aspects IMO.

Required fields are marked *

Real time ratings use samples of 700 people from seoul only. And I think they must use younger audience samples.

AGB Nielsen's samples numbers aren't that much higher either. It's 2000 people for general and 1000 people for major cities. But it's an old system and it consists of much older audience like age 50-70 so if the drama is more to older people's taste, the better it does in Nielsen ratings. And the criteria to get a ratings box is much harder. It has to be 4-people household and have 3 generations in one home. So you know who'd get the remote in homes like that. The system is screwed and not much effective and needs change, imo. TNS is supposedly younger too, but not by that much.

The buzz for W really matches the the real time ratings which reached 18% in highest point on Thursday. I don't care, I trust them more.

I continue to become more obsessed with The Good Wife. And I get so frustrated when I realize I have to wait another week for more episodes that I picked up 2 new shows. Surprising me this week is W. I never read up on any of the hype and I can't say I'm a fan of the actor, but I tried to keep an open mind and so far, I'm interested. I have girlfriday's recaps to thank for that.

Another one I had planned on checking out because of the Dramabeans article and ended up enjoying is Age of Youth. Too bad the ratings aren't great. I love the format though. I appreciate that there isn't just one central character but that each roommate is given an episode. There is so much story to be told that I'm excited for next week.

I have to say that I loved W!! The concept is really interesting and so far they executed ep 1 and 2 well. I am looking forward to the rest of it.

There are some dramas I am purposely waiting to watch so that I can watch them during the Olympics (Aug 5-21) or save them for Chuseok (Sep 14-18) when programming comes to a stop... The Good Wife, Uncontrollably Fond, Beautiful Mind, Mirror of the Witch, and so on.

I often wonder if there is an International viewer rating system. Anyone know? I would imagine that would be tracked and would be valuable. Anyone know?

So happy my shoe "Family of Five" as I call it, is doing well. Saw "W" liked it visually stunning, and I watched from beginning to end with no skipping. Beautiful Mind is a joy, I do agree that the first few episodes played a key part in the lower ratings, but I enjoy it more with each episode. Doctors I will wait until it ends to catch up on it. Missing My Fair Lady Gong Shim and the laugh out loud moments it gave me. Wanted is still good, but I am still confused as to who is orchestrating all these criminal events and what they hope to gain by the kidnapping of the heroines son. Meanwhile I will go watch Nirvana.... so good.

To be honest the only drama that I care about at the moment is 38 task force. This drama is pure gem rather the most expensive and beautiful diamond! Every once in a while there comes drama which just succumb your mind and makes you sit at the edge of your chair while the episode goes by. 38 task force is doing THAT to me. The last time i remember i was so excited about a drama was Kill me Heal me. Seo in guk is just killing it i this drama. Every role he plays is just a treat to watch and 38 task force is a legit reason why this guy deserves a wider applause and appreciation. I really hope people would just stop running after the so called popular over-hyped actors and start appreciating real gems like Seo in guk and Joo Won, who might not be as popular as other 'stars' but are for more better actors than them.

I'm lucky that I can watch both UF and W the same night, but I have to say that if I had to choose I would definitely drop UF after the last episode. It was just bleh. My expectation is that W will receive a bump and UF a decline next time the ratings are out. Meanwhile, I will watch both shows again but if UF stays this bad, I think I'll have to drop it, despite my rather awed fascination with how good looking the cast is. Fortunately, it was only episode 6 that would make me say that, as the rest of the episodes were fair to middling and kept me in some suspense. It can only get better from here, right? Right?

I've been reading the Doctors vs Beautiful Mind quarrels with some amusement, and maybe a little perturbation. I like PSH myself but I dropped doctors after the fourth episode. The main reason for me was I didn't feel any suspense. I think this is par for the course for me. I didn't continue with Descendants of the Sun, or Oh My Venus for basically the same reason. I wasn't curious about what happened next because the plot line wasn't strong although everything else - acting, directing, romance, etc. - was great.

Beautiful Minds I might have dropped too - it had a very slow and confusing start - but I kept going a little longer because Jang Hyuk had me curious about him. Then I started getting more interested in the mystery about the experiments, then how Hyuk would get out of his fix, then whether there could even be a romance between someone and a sociopath, then whether he was in fact a sociopath, then whether the father abused him - basically, the plot revved up in Beautiful Mind and every week it got better and kept me in suspense. The last two episodes were daebaek!

So I wish people wouldn't make it about who is a good actress or who isn't, quality show or not, etc. Some of us need a little more plot; others are happy with a fun, quality show (and sometimes, depending on my mood, I'm happy with that too). I just think it's a shame - and it's the production's fault - that more people couldn't get past the admittedly flawed first episodes because I think they're missing out on Beautiful Mind.

let me give my own analysis... first of all, doctors is an extremely amazing drama with an amazing cast and they definitely deserved all the attention they got. all episodes of doctors had medical acts in them, infact, there was hardly an episode that a surgery wasn't performed.. beautiful mind on the other hand, was ok too but not to the point of comparison with doctors. if u guys want an overhyped drama, then lets talk about uncontrollably fond.. first it was slow...really annoying and at some point, it started to loose substance, i am not saying that it is bad, am just saying that it isn't worth the hype it got.. W was fantastic, beautiful story line, wonderful actors, it was different... it was worth the hype.... bring it on ghost was amazing.. age of youth was surprising really good and satisfying. to be the overall worst drama of this season, has to be uncontrollably fond....***drops pen***
