Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 1-7, 2016

The pre-emptions for the Olympics have begun, so it’s best that we all start preparing ourselves for the primetime disruptions to come. Don’t worry, we’ll be ready to hand out complimentary and completely metaphorical tissues if/when our favorite shows get pushed back. Pssh, sports.

But over at the top of the week, Beautiful Mind ended with 3.2%, which wasn’t at all unexpected for that show. Doctors keeps flirting with that 20% mark but doesn’t seem any closer to achieving it, while Monster and Bring It On, Ghost continue to pull in decent numbers.

It seems safe to assume that W—Two Worlds will continue to hold the lead in the Wednesday-Thursday lineup, though it hasn’t rocketed skyward since last week—still, 12.2% is nothing to sniff at. Over on the weekend, Police Unit 38 started strong and ended strong, finishing at 4.6%. Well done.

W deserves better than this! I actually don't get it, is it in the wrong time slot, on the wrong channel, not being given enough publicity ? It could easily rake in 20% but it just.. isn't for some reason. The writing, directing, acting is all top notch, what's up with the Korean masses ?

There's nothing wrong with anyone, the ratings are just a reflection of the fact that it's a less older-people-pleasing type of story than the usual melos (too much thriller, not enough makjang), and young viewers tend to stream instead of watching traditional tv.

12.2 and a decisive lead given those circumstances, is actually pretty good.

Yes, that's all well and true. But then you have not so stellar gems like DOTS and Heirs breaking all kinds of ratings and they're aimed at the same age group, while makjang-ish type shows, with better scripts and actors hardly get that type of recognition. I'm looking at you Signal.

Signal's a cable drama, so I feel it's not fair to wish for 20%+ ratings for it. the ratings for DotS are actually understandable. I don't think it was aimed for the same age group as W. the romantic elements in DotS actually attracted diverse viewers of different age groups. And I don't mean any offence to many of its viewers, but DotS wasn't exactly made for viewers to think, evaluate, and analyze.

DotS is something you just sit back and relax. If it something didn't make sense, you'd just shrug and say "oh well... creative license" So, many viewers like that kind of entertainment - I like it too, especially if I need it as a stress-reliever.

W on the other hand is completely different. your eyes try to find clues and you investigate. if something feels off, you somehow cringe because you're expecting great things. it's not really something you just let your eyes see. viewers participate and think about theories and concoct assumptions.

I like W; however, it's in unnatural genre and rules haven't really been established yet. Thus imo it's kinda useless to look for any clues for now.

Signal got the rating it deserves. 12.5% is the highest for a cable crime mystery thriller. A prime time show on the public channel these days would be lucky to stay in the double digit range.

Based on past cable crime thrillers, I don't think tvN was expecting Signal's rating to be that high.

well UF seems to tick all the right boxes (melo, makjang, star power) but still is falling in ratings. So its not simply the genre

similarly, i have no idea why doctors is so high in ratings. It does not tick that many boxes. And the plot is non existent. But look at its popularity.

So in all - i don't understand ratings at all. Which is basically the case in every country - No one ever knows why a certain show does well.

To be fair, UF did have the lead at first and was safely in double digits, probably thanks to those very factors.

Basically the only explanation I can think of to explain why it toppled into single digits, and why W rose into first place despite all the genre/demographic strikes against it, is the content - people (self included) started tuning out thanks to the slowness and general lack of story oomph.

Doctors is very intense family drama.
Im totally hooked by their plot, they r using family and love as their main recipe which is very common in our life. But they made us think abt our life too. Everyone have their own history either bad or good. We saw happy face but inside we dont even know what happened in their life.
Cameos include (jisoo, nam gong min, han hyejin etc). They hve their own stories~ and i thnk this drama is very beautiful. Maybe they not focused so much for their main characters but psh & krw romance mde me smile a lot.

But W defintly a good drama to watch :)
*Sorry for my bad english. Keke

UF is faltering, because the story line is not ideal for the summer, this kind of slow paced drama would have done better in the winter ala Snow Queen, That Winter the Wind Blows, etc. Or maybe it wouldn't have and people are just tired of the cliched fatal disease plot. The drama is too old school, and moves too slowly. And while the initial popularity of its star actors got them high views initially, with more competition people have bailed.

More confusing is Doctors as you said. Other than the first 2 or 3 weeks, when it was cute and interesting. The drama is at a ground still, since we already know the final outcome of the love line. The politics and hospital conflict is not intriguing enough and is quite boring to boot. South Korea is one country that sure loves demonizing its medical field, and show after show depicts SK doctors has power hungry, money grubbing, incompetent doctors, who would risk patients lives and well being for their egos and personal gains.

W is unique and that is perhaps why there seems to be some over-hyping going on. Other than the last few scenes of episode 6, this past week's episodes were boring. Episode 5 was a total snooze fest, and the drama does better in the comic world, than when it goes all makjang lite in the real world. If they keep the story fun, and a bit mysterious and don't go down the overused makjang path, the drama still has a chance to get better ratings.

Yeah & I'm happy that W is on the top when it comes to CPI ranking even higher than shows that have higher ratings like as Doctors.

It's thrilling and fun but it can get repetitive going back and forth between the 2 worlds. I'm not surprised that the ratings dropped.

I hope it'll have enough thrills to keep the current viewers engaged for 10 more episodes.

Yeah, I was wondering myself - modern-day dramas entirely based on a fantasy element are not traditionally ratings magnets (the Hong sisters used their supernatural story elements more as a frame for the OTP than anything else).

And I think how the drama is going to sustain it all has been on our minds from Day 1, but I hope Song Jae-jung has a better handle on things than Lee Kyung-hee did this time.

Right and this is kind of following Queen In-hyun's Man when it comes to the ratings. Episode 5 was the highest at 3.2% then it goes down to 2+ then 1+ then back to 2+ until it ends.

Right now I think W has it's committed audience and the ratings will probably go back and forth between low and maybe mid teen which is not bad at all.

The fantasy elements isn't appealing to the masses. Moon Sun only succeeded because it wasn't over-done imo. Black magic only worked temporarily to make it appear that she was dead and that was it. She had no super power or anything else.

0

You really see W as repetitive? As in - predictable or featuring tired/used up elements? Does anyone else feel like that? From my perspective, the show is thrilling and episodes whoosh by before I even notice.

IMO Not being repetitive & predictable are among the stongest points of this drama alongside directing & acting specially LJS.

0

No not the repetitive way you are describing it.

0

I don't know if it will make sense - I think i'm vested more with the plot rather than the characters. Like i don't really care if KC finds true love or if YJ can move past her dad's shooting. But i'm on the edge of my seat with regards to the plot. Who is going to come out of which world, what happens next, does the world start again etc etc.

Thats why i wasn't really captivated by episode 6. Bec it was all about the aftermath of the shooting which i didn't care about. I don't care about their emotional journey

I just want them to go back to the crazy, fast paced story. so stagnated ratings sort of make sense to me here.

I'm with you! I'm actually more curious with the hows and the whys, too, with the worldbuilding of the writer, rather than the characters. It's the world and the plot moving the characters, which is very wonderful ❤

0

@bips99.. I actually stopped seeing this as a love story, after that epilogue between kang chul and the writer, after their first encounter,on ep 4 ,may be. It just felt so fascinating to me,when kang chul was asking all the right questions that hit at the core,[ Le jong suk is really killing it,as kang chul, must say]. Now more than the love story or anything else..I want to know what happens at the end.The drama has the power to surpass the common trope of romance and bickering, and we could experience something ethereal, but it all depends on the writer himself lol, I always feel like I'm watching some different mood at every single episode,as there is no constraint of rules or reality, he can take any route that he wants, like that scene from the bathroom.

I often wonder how distorted a view the streamers give to ratings. I almost never watch anything on live TV anymore - 95% of what I watch is streamed. But even if I watch every episode of something 93 times, it does not add to the ratings.

12-13 percent is nowhere near 'underrated', especially not after 2014.

I'd expect it to peak around 15 percent if it keeps its momentum and holds viewer interest, and even that is exceptional these days.

I agree. It's kind of hard to explain. This is an unique show and it has it's appeal mostly to young people. Older folks like my mom doesn't get it. It's not grounded on reality for their liking.
Older folks likes watching dramas that they can relate to like the weekend family dramas and that is why the rating is always so high at that time slot.

I'd hardly call W underrated. The rating is where it should be if you look at it from a general perspective. Anything with time-travel element has not been successful in the past. Based on a webtoon character coming to life? That's a bit too unbelievable for some.

But you are not a Korean ajumma are you? When I visit my Korean friends' home, their parents and grandparents are either watching family dramas, sageuks or variety shows.
The kids mostly watched their shows online when they are not studying because mom or grandma has the remote control at the end of the day.

0

agreed anything in double figures these days makes it a hit drama, heck even an 8% not bad really, when most watch TV through the internet and thus do not get counted in the % as far as I understand it. As for Doctors will that been feeding off itself, the high viewer rating makes other watch to see what the fuss is about and it living off that. I can not see it getting to the magic 20% mark on that alone though. Mark it down to cast and good promotion, love or hate her the lead girl can and dose pull in the Korean Viewers.

No one is checking for Ji Chang Wook in Korea...I don't understand why ifans think just because Healer was popular internationally, that means JCW somehow has top star status in Korea, where the general public barely watched the show.

It also doesn't help that he's done nothing but random Chinese projects since Healer, which are going to be all stopped abruptly now given circumstances.

0

Required fields are marked *

What circumstances?

0

i guess its because ifans have access to very limited articles or websites. Like i visit DB the most and everyone here loves JCW so i sort of extrapolate and think that he is getting massive love from korea as well. i did not know that was not the case

0

Empress ki touched the 30% mark, so I think Ji Changwook is pretty popular as general public did watch the show. I am sure people like directors, producers etc. in Korea know how popular he is overseas and he must be getting many offers because of it.
The one who is not getting work or good dramas is actor like Lee Dong Wook, he hasn't done a great drama lately. In comparison to him, JCW is definitely being offered great roles in Korea.

0

China is all about politics and censorship, always has been but sometimes the focus changes. http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/2133809-k-pop-stars-become-scapegoats-in-chinas-protests-against-anti-missile-deployment/

China's top political leadership have even officially stated that they would like to limit or ban Korean dramas - because they compete too much with the nearly always crappy Chinese over-censored ones. Lately it has been getting much worse. A major black market industry exists in China for uncensored versions of movies and shows, especially from Japan, Korea, and the US.

0

The state sanctioned censorship on Korean actors, shows and co-productions has all the hallmark of being retaliatory for Korea deciding to employ the top American THAAD anti-missile defense system.

Which is ridiculous since SK has a legitimate concern due to the pudgy dictator up north.

0

W is definitely not underrated. If you go by the numbers, it seems rather low, but the comments and upvotes of people online about W are insane. It seems a big reason is the attracted audience. Younger audiences watch online rather than on tv. Anything within the double digit is already an achievement these days.

Required fields are marked *

I know what you mean, but a drama reaching double digits these days is really good. That and taking the lead in its time slot have already made this a success. I agree that young viewers watch via streaming and do not understand why this isn't considered (or it is but not in these ratings).

0

Required fields are marked *

I think now for a show to be able to break 20 percent it should be watched by the ahjummas and ahjusshis. Even dots was decribed as to be seen mostly by women in their 40's. W on the other hand attracts youngsters more i guess who can stream rather than watch live on their tv sets. For such a show being able to break 15 percent is good enough too.

0

And that somehow makes me uneasy too that only a certain kind of shows can break 20-25 percent. Makjang, unrealistic or maybe star power or star writers like Kim Eun sook.

Yes, I was in Korea during the DOTS craze, and it seemed like more of the ahjummas were excited about it rather than the youngsters.

Personally, if given the choice, I'd watch W online instead of live on the tv. W is that kind of show that makes you think and gets you mindblown, so it's kind of hard to follow it on tv.

That, or the viewers simply didn't like the lack of Kang Chul in episode 6. I mean I kept waiting for him to show up so singlemindedly, I barely paid attention to Appa landing up in the hospital. Viewers for W in particular like it when the two leads are together in one frame, that's what tends to bring in the ratings I've noticed i.e Kang Chul kissing Oh Yeon Joo in episode 5 saw the show reach a ratings high, but the very next episode where they had no scenes together at all our ratings dipped again.

Required fields are marked *

Actually given the premise of both UF and W, I never thought that W would passed UF in terms of rating. Before they air, I thought UF would garner bigger rating and W would gain more popularity online. Part of their jump in rating is just because UF turned out to be so bad, so most people from UF turn to W instead.
So I think W getting this much ratings is alr so good, bc actually their genre wouldn't interest usual public channel drama viewer. Unlike DotS that could interest new viewer to watch drama on TV (a bit of melo and so much romance), with their genre W new viewer would mostly watch it online.

And I have been thinking about this for a while. But maybe drama that could garner big ratings in cable didn't necessarily mean they would get big ratings in public channel. Bc public and cable channel viewer's taste seems to be different.

" UF turned out to be so bad"!!!!! UF is not a bad drama at all, and rating (which mostly reflects popularity among middle age and/or high schoolers) is not a good criteria to label a drama as BAD. UF rating is low because it has a melo genre and a very gloomy/wintery mood which might not be appealing for neither high schoolers nor ajjumas in the middle of the hot summer...UF reminds me of dramas like Bubble Gum, it has old school cliché but yet made very uniquely and artisticly...+ I believe that Suzy earned tones of anti-fans since dating LMH. Her acting might be medicore but is not a disaster at all or by any means worst than PSH and many other Idols... in fact I never felt any emotion when seeing actress like Yuna or PSH but I cried this week with Suzy when she met her father in the jail, she is doing a decent job and is portraying a unique character that is poor and very unlucky but not a Candy or cinderella

A Good Wife has such a good material for drama. Somehow the execution by Do Yeon, Ji Tae and Kyun Sang are much better than the American version. It's getting better after each episode with more complex emotion at current stage. It felt so real and make us wondering what would be the best option after each obstacle we need to face through every single day. I may not contributing to the rating for the drama but rating won't affect my judgement on which drama is better to watch or not. After all, this drama is the 4th one that I watched for this year, so yeah...I may not be credible enough to put more critics in any other 2016 drama.

AoY is already no 1 in my list ❤ As much as I love W, AoY stole the no 1 after epi 5&6. The chemistry between the 5 ladies are daebak. Exactly! Pinocchio was a hit in Korea (the viewers even came up with the name "Darling Couple") but it peaked around 13% only. Right now, W is gaining so much good response from viewers. It may not be reflected in the numbers (just yet), but being no. 1 in its time slot means it is doing good.

I agree that W is doing well despite the genre, lack of promotion & the fact that it is 2016 not 2013.
I remember Pinocchio broke 50% online rating which shows it had a great audiences on live streaming, what about W? Does anyone know the online rating for it?

They are active on their official SNS & stared promoting it on their channel by teasers & footnote one weak to its premier, but what I am sure is about general portal sites like as Naver & Nate, I was following this drama & some others since the leads were offered the drama, I should say until the premier day I didn't see anything special ( usually I check Naver every 3 or 4 hour. From what I saw two dramas were given much publicity, UF & Gurami (the one with PBG, i don't remember the English title)

Meanwhile in Indonesia, broadcasters opt to delay Olympic broadcast rather to pre-empt dramas and other programs.
I'd give thumbs up for South Korean dedication in every major sport competition like World Cup, Olympic, Asian Games etc.
Yeah even though I might not watching W next week.

Yeah it's true that I think they support their athletes a lot. My sister said Music Bank last week had Olympic theme and some other programs also have Olympic-themed thing, like Running Man last week and this week. Even Kang Chul is former Olympics gold medallist in W.. hehe
So there's that, people are aware and broadcasters are enthuastic to support the athletes even though dramas maybe get the pre-emptions.

But then again, I don't think I'd have had a point of view on this if this was not affecting W's airing lol! So, don't mind me South Korea, do what you do best.

Seriously, the dates of the Olympics are known for YEARS beforehand, they are not a surprise event - I wish the networks had a slightly better handle on what to actually do with their airing dramas during the games.

MBC has a Wed-Thurs time slot winner after a long time - I don't get why they want to shoot themselves in the foot by pre-empting it, especially if the other channels keep airing theirs as usual.

I'm not sure how it works in Korea but in my country everything remains ambiguous till last week before olympics because they are still negotiating which sports will air which channel due to last minute changes scheduling changes accordingly so it's hard to conclude beforehand even if they know the dates of olympics.

Same, over here it was only this week that the national broadcaster managed to re-negotiate for the live broadcasting rights for the Olympics, or else we wouldn't be able to watch it live here lol.

But in Korea, all three networks (KBS, SBS, MBC) would be showing Olympics? Why don't they just delay the broadcast of the dramas on another timeslot instead of pre-empting them (or cancelling them...)?

0

Required fields are marked *

Same in my country. You know of the "Event" but the exact programming is decided like just a week in advance.

But pre-empting it looks like a really bad move. And UF is actually improving so it might win back a few viewers.

But i can't believe i have to wait 2 weeks for W. 2 freaking weeks!!!! ... throw a bone and release a longer preview at least

Always find it interesting how the Olympics are on all 3 main channels in S.Korea whilst in my country it's exclusively only 1 since they brought the broadcasting rights for it.

I'd think if you're leading in your time-slot that would be more than enough for the station. Anyways as much as ratings are important, with the Olympics around it kind of gives these shows breathing ground. I'm guessing if your live shooting and only have to produce an episode for that week, you'd low-key be happy.

Yay for W! Double digit is hard to come by in the recent years, so this is already good for the drama. Although most viewers feel that it deserves so much more (I feel the same way), there's just so many factors (e.g. demographic, trend of online streaming among the big chunk of young viewers, marketing etc.) involved.

For sure the numbers do not reflect exactly how viewers feel about a certain drama. I read comments of Korean viewers in various websites and they all say great things about W. It easily topped real time searches in the previous episodes too. As long as W stays within double digit and no. 1 in its time slot, then it's doing good. If it goes higher, even better.

I don't know how the Olympics will factor in. The news about postponement of the coming episodes are conflicting. It'll be interesting how this will change things for the dramas in the coming weeks.

I don't really hope for W to reach 20%, I just hope it can at least reach 15%. It is good enough I think. (of course it will be the best if can reach 20%). ❤

Age Of Youth is definitely my show at the very moment. I love every single moment can cannot get enough of it. The chemistry between five leading ladies are awesome ❤

Saw some clips of UF, particularly at KWB's scenes. This guy is doing a good job.I'm happy for him. Looks like KWB carrying the drama on his own. Well done boy..

Yeah, that's good for Kim Woo-bin.

I just wish he had a better leading lady, though. Someone like Lee Sung-kyung might actually be a good fit for him based on their acting styles (I've seen the observation that he tends to need a good costar to bounce off, and something about her acting style/energy makes me think they'd spark).

He is doing a good job but poor him, he is doing extra works. But his efforts are praiseworthy. I no longer want to complaint about Suzy, it is not right for me the non-viewer to judge her (and I already has my own judgment on her acting before). But based on reviews, her acting is still so so. Luckily KWB is able to portray his character, at least one of the leads'acting is still satisfying.

Lee Sung Kyung and Kim Woo Bin will be great partner I think ❤ More than that, I hope KWB will reunite with Kim Ji Won in any drama in the future. Imagine their chemistry.. will be great❤

yeah, a Kim Woo-bin/Kim Ji-won drama would be great, their chemistry was through the roof in Heirs. I wish they'd pre-shot that one so we could have actually got the second leads' love line like KES intended instead of allowing herself to be swayed by viewer reactions into making Young-do a typical rejected second lead.

Lee Sung-kyung has incredible screen presence, and I think she and Woob would be amazing together if she was playing a character with a strong personality and not a Candy. Plus she goes all-in to roles, which I like.

0

It's not about the budget. It's about it's appeal. Family dramas has always been popular among the weekend crowd. Older folks are not as picky as we are about the cinematography, style etc.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

They're not as popular among that prized 18-34 demographic, I believe their ratings come from demographics that are less valuable to advertisers.

That's why weekend dramas are considered to really be successful only if they clock 30-40 percent and up which means more people are actually watching. 20-25 percent for a weekend drama is the equivalent of 5-10 percent for a weekday one.

W's drop in ratings is not a good sign. It should pull away from 2nd or 3rd week onward as shown by hits like Dots and Doctors.

I also noticed that W started at 8.6% compared to Doctor's 12.9% and UF's 12.5%. Is it the genre or marketing or is it that PSH/KRW and Suzy/KWB have more star power than HHJ/LJS?

I wouldn't call W underrated at this point but rather that some other dramas are overrated.

Age of Youth has tough competition in PU38 and The Good Wife. I wasn't expecting to love it so much. For a show centered around college girls, it has a lot more going for it than those fluffy shows which are disguised as mature material.

Maybe the slightly ratings drop for ep 6 of W is because the main character actually shot someone in the heart?

Im quite surprised alot of people still root for kangchul. No matter what the background is, shot someone in the heart is really BAD.
You still have to go to jail! To take responsibilities for it.
It is homicide case (yeah eventhough the victim didnt die, but still!)

And i dont remember when the last time i saw, another main protagonist character hurt people that bad.
Maybe a few people who see it, might lost interest in it. Thats why the ratings drop a little? Maybe

0

If anything, I thought that shot would have increased the rating. Wouldn't the viewers want to see if Dad really died? That would mean an almost certain death for Kang Chul- Yeon Joo's romance.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think ratings dropped because ep5 was too dark and half the ep was conversation in a room. And probably because ep6 had no Kangchul in it.

The writer stabbed Kangchul and he didn't take responsibility for it either. He says in ep6 he and Kangchul and same-same and forgiven. And Kangchul killed himself for shooting, what more do you want :(.

Agree, he killed himself which is more than enough while Dad was still alive, plus Dad had killed all his family, wrongly framed him, stabbed him to death, many times of attempt for killing him, for kangchull he is more than a murderer, a psycho who had killed his family & tortured him every day & night, moreover it was Dad who provoke him to do it but still he didn't shoot him in a way that he die as Dad himself said that if he wanted to kill him he could.

go to jail? where? he´s been to jail for murder already and done his time for no reason but the writers will. so I could say it is a pre-paid deal. but if a fictional character whose come to life has to go to jail for attempted murder, then shouldnt a real person who stabbed the fictional character go to jail too?

actually, going to jail doesnt sound so bad. Jung Do is there. Let´s go.

But the scene where Kang Chul shoots his creator had peak rating of 20% even more than the main leads kiss scene!!! No one can say for sure why ep 6 receive dip in ratings in comparison to 5, maybe it is the fact that there's hardly any Kang Chul or that there is no scenes with two leads together or because the male lead committed suicide in episode 5 that's why no one tuned in for the aftermath.

Required fields are marked *

I agree, from the translations I've seen that 30 minute argument between KangChul and Dad was highly rated and popular with fans of the show. Both actors delivered and the scene was full of tension. The ratings drop in 6 is probably because there was less action and the leads were kept apart for most of the episode.

I'd say PSH, Suzy, KWB, LJS, HHJ all have pretty similar star power. They are all in 20's and still establishing themselves. They are not in position to acclaim star power yet. HHJ is the one with daesang, after all. KRW is a veteran actor but not really a mega star. Jang Hyuk is a bigger star than him and look at Beautiful Mind ratings. Genre and target audience is a big factor too.

First episode ratings depend on a lot of things. Marketing, slot, genre, drama ratings, total ratings pie, competition etc. It would be foolish to say it all depends on star power unless it's like JJH.

Like in W's case it had little marketing and the previous drama Lucky Romance ended in 6% in third place. And it went in when UF already was 4 eps in.

han hyo jo, she already gt daesang award right? Am i wrong? And W is her comeback in dramaland which many knet anticipating her work.

Everyone have their own fanbase so the rating just reflected which drama's plot/genre gt more attention and loved by knet. Its not tht the drama itself not good. Just bcz.
I love all the 3 drama since the genre are not same. And i hope all gt high rating~

W-thriller? Fantasy & action
Doctors- light romance & family
UF- heavy melo & heavy romance.

W premiered with very little promotion from MBC and only done a few weeks before the airing of the show, also UF had a big advantage because it premiered two weeks before with a four, but in reality, really a six episode lead.

Let's also not forget that UF was media played to DEATH for six months and was up against two really week shows, Wanted and Lucky Romance.

UF basically had the best path to hit ratings gold while W had everything stacked up against it.

Part of the reason the ratings went down for episode six of W was because there wasn't enough Kang Cheol/LJS, and too much HHJ and her struggle acting.

Let's be real, the female lead is the weak point in this drama, and I don't care how many people are planning on replying to this post to defend her acting. There have literally been complaints about her acting from users on Korean portal sites from day one, and articles written in the Korean media...you, know, where peoples opinions actually matter.

It also might be a drama that's hard for older people to connect with because it is so new and fresh, but I hope that can be overcome with the coming episodes.

Also, I don't get why MBC would postpone episodes when their main competitor UF is not, that's basically giving them their viewers...I heard nothing has been confirmed yet.

Where did you find the articles mentioning about HHJ's acting? Surprisingly I don't really found ppl complaining about her acting. Maybe in few earlier episodes because of her comical acting which probably unacceptable for most ppl. Unless those articles are proven from the reliable sources, let's don't believe them 100%.

I'm not defending HHJ, in fact I do acknowledge she has certain limitation in acting. But I don't think ppl will avoid her drama because of her acting. I don't want to really do this, but if comparison is necessary between HHJ and Suzy, ( I think it is OK because their dramas are competing with each other), in my opinion ppl will easily prefer HHJ. I just feel putting the blame on HHJ due to decrease in rating is quite unfair.

The lower rating would not simply because of bad acting. Beautiful Mind is one of current example when the rating was the lowest but definitely not because of the acting, not on the plot as well.

@hypeman is right, there have been complaints about Han Hyo Joo's acting. She seems to have regressed from even earlier in her career, like her Shining Inheritance days. If you thought her 'startled rabbit' act in Dong Yi was bad, then W would be even more unbearable to watch.

It's not the exaggerated, comedic acting that is a problem. It's that she doesn't connect with the audience, nor with her co-star for that matter. For example, it's hard to believe that she is in love with KC, because she is not doing a good job of conveying that. So all her life or death decision to sacrifice so much, to get back into the comic world doesn't carry the weight the writers/directors were likely hoping to portray.

Viewers don't know in advance what's going to happen in an episode. The best, and most accepted, gauge to see how general audiences liked an episode is to see if there were mid-episode spikes and drops, or see if the ratings for the next episode spike. Or if the promo for the next episode is spoilery. A lot of people tuned into episode 5 because they knew there'd be a kiss and because episode 4 was really good. And there were no kiss pics for episode 6+KC shot YJ's dad. Just not as big a draw if you're here for the OTP. No one knew KC wasn't going to be with YJ in episode 6 until it aired. No one knew she was going to be doing most of the acting. And that's never turned off viewers before, unless the actress is absolutely atrocious. Which HHJ isn't, shes just okay.

I don't think HHJ is the best actress but that being said I don't think LJS is that good an actor either. His character is being written well to the point where being serviceable can work out. It's a very tangible struggle KC has and LJS best strength as an actor is having chemistry with his costars. That's all anyone cares about here.

LJS is perfectly fine as an actor but if you read the recap threads, you would think he is this amazing, next-best-thing actor..... When did that happen?

I adore him *who doesn't* and he does shine in certain scenes, but he isn't an extraordinary actor so all that praise doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe because the writing is so amazing that it makes everything look fabulous???

Again, not a bad actor at all. In fact a decent actor but the level of appreciation he is getting makes me a little confused

Required fields are marked *

not really his best role imo. sometimes it feels like he is confused and unsure what to do . I wouldnt say he is the only one who could portray this character, besides it hasnt had that many levels acting wise so far. in the first 4 ep it was same same over and over.

and the character is a sort of chauvinist. I am not too fond of it.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm not too fond of it either. he's too macho and the thing about machismo is it requires a certain level of irony for it to work. I don't really get the hype about his character. also, my goodness, the comic book story is so trite.

0

I think he owns whatever role he takes and I always enjoy watching him never missed his dramas but I must say even though I can't replace him with another actor I can switch all his previous characters with one another it's always this suave guy with a bit revengeful side. So he never blows me away my reactions pretty much like ’ah...as expected LJS'

0

LJS isn't a great actor in comparison to WHO ? Certainly not any of his peers, who are all doing cookie cutter type roles and if you want to talk about chauvinism LJS never plays up any kind of misogyny in his drama's even when the script is written like that. The only other actor in his age group, that I can say is working on varying roles and applying a broad spectrum of emotions to all his characters no matter what the show would be Yoo Ah In.

While veteran actors like Kim Rae Won are doing sexist type roles, even in their age and not showing very broad acting. Just because an actor is getting good feedback, doesn't mean it's unwarranted. His emotional acting and chemistry with his co-stars has always been top tier.

Are you talking about his role in Doctors? Or we are watching different dramas?
I'm not KRW fans but his role in Doctors is refreshing and he said he hasn't done lighter role for 10 years. Can you say the same with LJS?

0

What does the type of role have to do acting ability?

0

I do admit I'm not familiar enough to know the ages of most k-actor/esses, nor of their "entering" industry dates, so I can't easily name another that would be a more favorable age/experience comparison.

Comparing LJS to YAI is not doing LJS any favors, and I do like him as an actor and think he is developing his skills well over time.

I have really liked LJS's various micro expressions in W, starting with the sleight eyebrow raise as he's carried away on the stretcher in ep. 1.

I thought it was a clever way to keep an undercurrent of emotion while overall still portraying the flatter "character" of KS in his two dimensional reality where such moments would be lost between frames of the webtoon.

I'm not sure if that is by his take or director encouraged, but it's been enjoyable to see and look for in KS's overall character development in this show.

0

There are those who don't care for LJS, as well as others.

He's an OK actor, hardly a thespian.

????!!!!
LJS's character is really hard to portray, a complicated one with many layers ,different experiences & emotions, positive & negative sides which needs a spectrum of acting skills, there were many articles praising his acting & comments with more than 5000 upvotes that no matter what, LJS is the only actor who could pull it off, for example the second comment on this article:
http://m.star.naver.com/leejongsuk/news/end?id=8052108
Or this one
http://m.star.naver.com/leejongsuk/news/end?id=8020488

Reading the comments they very very satisfied with his pronunciation which one article & many comments describes it as "addictive" & "without context" in webtoon but real in real world, his facial expressions got a lot of praising too.

I think you are replying to two different comments thinking they are the same. I have said that Kim Rae Won is doing more of a sexist, maybe not the right word, but alpha male role even than the character of Kang Chul. I'm not trying to put him down, how could I since that's clearly what's clicking with the audience unlike W. But the point still stands, that Lee Jong Suk doesn't do douchey roles, where the lead drags the female around by the wrist and imposes his orders on her. Which is typical of most kdrama's. Infact he is always doing the opposite of those roles, he is pro in playing Beta Male roles.

It's easy why people refer the decrease of rating to ep 6 & lack of sth in it, not ep5 because viewers easily can switch the channel, & the highest rating one minute for W till today were the one with kangchul & Dad argument with shooting him in the heart not the kiss scene.

It got about 20% viewership while when they aren't satisfied with what they are watching at that time they switch it to another channel.

Just for your information, the highest rating in Episode 5 was where KC found out there was no culprit, above 19% nonetheless. So your argument about the rating thing is totally invalid here.

I don't find his acting perfect either but I do think some credit is due.

A lot of Korean viewers who won't give W a chance say they just can't get over the fact that the lead is a manhwa character. They literally can't accept it. So no matter how much the writer puts into the script, KC would never have a chance to connect with the audience without a skillful actor.
This is not just a romcom jaebul role who's sweeping the main girl off her feet. KC role requires to show his good and dark side and ask the audience to stay with him. I mean, KC has already shot the main girl and her father by ep6. All the points are against KC and the writer is not giving much shield either so I just cant agree that it's a well written and amazing role. I think it's just the opposite, and the writer is putting a lot on the actor's shoulders. The amount of acting level required for KC is insane. Writer's hiding a lot of KC's POV and internal struggle to service the plot. LJS is the one who's bringing out humanity and realism to the role. And he's pulling out like 10 min monologues with perfect dictation and emotions. The fact that KC is so popular is a testament to LJS. After watching W, I have no problem calling him the best actor of his peers.

It takes more than just being a serviceable actor to do a 30 minute scene with a veteran actor and hold his own. LJS is very talented and improving every day.

Maybe watch episode 1 first?

I do think the girls can relate to this story better but I don't necessary think that it should be restricted to female viewers only.

Kdrama is famous for it's bromance and I think this drama shows a good sisterhood friendship.

It has male parts too, I don't want to give any spoiler but It has.But the centre of the drama is the ladies. Ohh, you better try until episode 4 if to find out you want to watch or not. TBH epi 1&2 were not really strong and intriguing. But epi 3&4 really pick up the pace.

"male parts"

Ke ke ke ke ke.
(I'm sorry for laughing at that. Sometimes I'm so middle school-ish.)

Don't have to be female to enjoy AoY.

The themes and situations are universal and good writing and acting is good writing and acting.

While there are male roles, they are far less interesting.

The actresses carry the show and they are well worth a watch.

I am super enjoying the dramas that are airing but Age of Youth has my heart! I can't wait to see what happens next and I'm happy they reached 1% this week :)

I'd drop all these shows to watch Nathan Adrian any time.
I'm probably one of the very few who would prefer the Olympics over dramas. It's just 2 weeks.

I watch the first week obsessively. I love swimming and gymnastics (plus the US has coverage all day so you can catch cool stuff like shooting and archery). Track, not so much.

My 2 favorites! Swimming and gymnastics. I'm not a fan of track either but I'd tune in for archery and fencing. I'd also watch most of the water sports like rowing, diving, synchronised swimming etc.

Kind of sad that Gabby couldn't compete for the individual all round.

Yeah, I was sad about Gabby too. She was so amazing in 2012 and even making it back to the Olympics is a huge accomplishment. Hopefully she can bring home another team gold and medal in some of the individual events!

Simone Biles is so amazing though! Practically every routine she does I have to pick my jaw up off the floor lol.

Nope, you are not the one. I always dedicate myself to watch every big games rather than drama. I'm also glad that they postponed/ cancelled it so that I can focus on the sports more ?

I remember watching a documentary about Huey Lewis & the News. (Yeah, I'm that old.) And one thing he said that will always stay with me is how growing up it was always emphasized that popularity didn't mean quality. Often the masses are attracted to mediocrity.

So when a rep from his record company called him with the "great news" that his album was #1 on the chart he thought, "Number one? I thought we were better than that."

That's how I feel about ratings.
Usually K-Dramas that I judge as "quality" don't get high ratings. It's understandable.

Sometimes a well made, well written show will do well in viewership. (But not very often.)

this is so true, often the music or tv shows loved by critics are not that popular.

Glad Party of Five is still doing well now down to 4 more episodes, will be sad to see it end. Enjoyed Beautiful Mind, and though I like the lead in Doctors I dropped by episode 4. W is unique I am interested in seeing where the writer will take us with mix of fantasy / drama, and visually it is stunning in the comic book world. I thinks some viewers are like me, some times no matter how good a drama is, if you are are not in the mood be it romance, drama, comedy you will not watch. Right now I am watching Party of Five and W.
