Ji Chang-wook finds someone to protect in mysterious K2 teasers

 photo JCW1_K2.jpg

Cable channel tvN has released three new teasers for The K2, giving us a small taste of what to expect in the upcoming action-romance drama. After Ji Chang-wook made such a strong impression as the wonderful Healer, I was a bit worried that his The K2 persona could turn into Healer 2.0, especially since both characters are defined as highly-trained combat experts. I’m happy to report that we have reason to be cautiously optimistic. The newly released teasers set up Ji Chang-wook to give off a more serious and tragic vibe in The K2, especially in the one where he says: “I lost my love. I thought I lost everything, but I found someone I want to protect.”

He plays a bodyguard, hired by a presidential candidate’s wife, played by Song Yoon-ah (Assembly). Presumably, that’s how he gets to know our leading lady, Yoon-ah ( Prime Minister and I) who is the hidden illegitimate daughter of the presidential candidate. In one of the featured teasers, she sits in a red cocktail dress, burning what seems to be a photo while thinking, “If Dad becomes president, do I have to die? I really don’t want to.”

In Song Yoon-ah’s teaser, her husband, played by Jo Sung-ha (Neighborhood Hero), says in voiceover, “Choi Yoo-jin-sshi, if I don’t become president, you’re nothing—you know that, right?” She answers, “You will become president, because I’m going to make it happen.”

And in an earlier teaser, Ji Chang-work speed-drives in reverse, as the scene cuts to Song Yoon-ah sitting in front of a full-length mirror. She has a group of attendants nearby but they’re facing away from her, and the shadows suggest that something is off. Then, we see a completely white room with Yoon-ah in a white dress. Is he coming to save her? Or has he been given an order by the presidential candidate’s wife to kill her?

It looks like we won’t find out until Ji Chang-wook’s Friday-Saturday tvN drama, The K2, starts airing on September 23.

I was going to watch the dorama even if the teasers didn't grab my attention but I'm glad that they continue to pike my interest on it in spite of my efforts to keep my expectations low so as not to be disappointed later. Please be good, The K2!

They're currently here in Barcelona and it looks they will be shooting here before going to San Roque (Cadiz, south Spain). I hope I can meet them not only because, duh, ///Ji Chang-wook///, but because it could be really cool to catch a glimpse of how does a Korean drama work behind the scenes...

I feel like Yoona and Suzy are all quite comparable. They are okay in certain roles, but I wouldn't say they are great actresses. Yoona does better in a fun-loving heroine role compared to an emo role.

In SNSD, I think Yoona is a better actress compared to Yuri (love her, but she's terrible lol) but Sooyoung and Seohyun are above Yoona.

If they just changed her hair some it would help.
That is the same style and color she has had for ten years now.
A little tint, some waves, maybe highlights at least and something done about that awful makeup.
Put a few lashes on that girl already. The blank faced teen look is not appealing.

Eh, I'm pretty sure last year she even had blonde hair like most idols had at some point lol.

And as liki said, she had different hair styles and colors in her previous drama. Besides, I dont know, wont it be kind of out of character for a recluse young woman to have her hair dyed? *shrug*

Yeah, I'm happy his character and image is nothing like Healer. From the teaser he seems really sad and cold, so that's good. The plot looks interesting, and I hope Yoona will be able to handle a character with panic disorder. I have no doubt in JCW's acting, I'm sure he will be able pull it off amazingly.
I hope this will be great drama with good ratings.

I recognise it's a bad drama but I actually liked it, lol.

She was insipid and terrible in the 70s portion, but much better in the present-day one (everything from ep 5 onwards) and actually had good chemistry with Jang Geun-seok though of course he carried most of the show.

From what I've sussed out, Yoona's all right if her role is more in the vein of 'supporting character who happens to be a love interest', than an actual lead who's expected to carry the show. And the former is what we have here, I think - she'll be fine.

As much as I want to be 100% onboard, Yoon-ah makes me feel iffy about the whole thing. I get that she's popular but if she turned it down once almost easily it's telling us something...probably her confidence level on nailing it? I hope not, for JCW's sake.

Yes, she is very pleasant, but I feel that like a lot of idols this really defines her range. I think it must be partly the idol conditioning: they must always be pleasant, and their emotions and behavior - especially for female idols - must fall within a certain narrow range accepted by the public, media, and fans. You must be beautiful, you must be nice, you must be cheerful and hard-working.

And how many meaty parts for actresses out there demand "cheerful"? Sorry, but for 90% of the idol "actresses" out there, passion and anger and envy and despair are just too far out of their wheelhouse. I fully expect her to be pleasant, she will be able to show sadness and squeeze out a few tears, but the real depth of the story will swirl around her, not from her. I just hope they give her as little screen time as possible, with nothing too dark or complicated expected from her.

Yes I think so too. Yoona isn't as bad as most people seem to think. They're harder on her than others I see sometimes.

0

Required fields are marked *

I wouldn't call suzy the worst. She was pretty good in Gu Family Book and in her most recent movie I heard she did well. I would blame the badness of uncontrollably fond on the writing not her acting so I don't know why everyone suddenly hates her. I think all 3 are on the same level, not the best, but not terrible.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, IU had at least one genuinely good performance to her credit before this (and I mean good, not 'good for an idol'), which is something considering she has the least acting experience out of the three. She's not the greatest but she's definitely ahead of the other two in terms of natural acting ability.

Yoona is all right and generally holds up decently against her costars, while Suzy remains shaky despite writers working overtime to cover for her deficiencies.

This is nice, I liked it. I really do especially the two actresses even more than JCW. I still need to see more of JCW so we will wait.

I liked the first 8 episodes of Young pal "mainly because of JW performance" but I'm sure I can enjoy the writing of the first three weeks of K2 as well as YP :p
Although there is no JW here, we do have a bunch of interesting characters and actors.

Out of the three teasers, I liked the Yoonas the most. They are the most intriguing and make me have a lot of questions.

I find it ridiculous to prematurely say that Yoona is going to ruin the drama and the acting will be bad, that she is only in it for the popularity. She might have improved, hell, she might even surprise you. Keep an open mind and give her chance. Whatever or Whoever is the reason for you to watch it, don't let your bias ruin the enjoyment.

I had all the same doubts. TvN have been delivering great dramas all year. I wonder if this one will break their momentum or continue it. Seeing as they have been signing all the popular writers (this one, Kim Eun Sook) I've got my guard up because I'm not particularly fond of either but I wonder if they're going to be auditing their scripts like they seem to have been doing with all those dramas they produced this year?

Signal, CITT, Let's Fight Ghost, Dear My Friends, The Good Wife, Reply 1988, Another Oh Hae Young, Cinderella and the Four Knights.

Here's to hoping The K2 will join this list.

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Most probably because they still need time to filming at least few eps before premiere. The cast only gathered on Aug 4, Yoona confirmed shortafter, and the filming commence around Aug 8. While The Good Wife ended on Aug 26 and if The K2 had to follow TGW it had to premiere on Sep 2, too short for the preparation. In addition the cast need to filming overseas (currently in Barcelona, Spain). So tvN gives them some much needed time to at least not rushing the filming and prevents unforeseen situation, such as injury since it's action/thriller drama.

shim mina's drama was originally slated to start right after TGW then came the leading man drama and delay so K2 was brought forward to a earlier date than their original Nov date.

Are the people criticising Yoona from the get-go people that haven't even touched Prime Minister and I? Yoona was great there although I do feel it had a lot to do with following the lead of the awesome Lee Bumsoo. I feel like Yoona can do well here if she just learns from Ji Changwook & learns how to match him on screen. I think he can bring out the best in her tbh. I will be reasonable wait for the first couple of eps before judging her, she's such a hard worker. I know that she has potential and I hope she proves people wrong with decent to good acting. (I'm not expecting she will blow us away although that would be a major surprise and a major up yours to her haters if she does)
She has already proven people wrong in terms of her singing ability as well by releasing a Chinese remake album, on which she sounded absolutely gorgeous. I wish nothing but the best for her, fingers crossed she does well. If she totally tanks this, then yes go ahead and criticise her, but doing it prematurely? I really don't see the point as she has proven she has potential before.

you make very valid points and thank you for not completely writing her off unlike other negative commenters on here, but my main point is that she does have potential (she got so much hate before Prime Minister and I aired but she proved haters wrong) She seems like a keen learner and she has gotten more experience in Chinese dramas since then, so why don't we give her a chance before pre-judging her when we have not even seen much yet? People are just too quick to jump the gun, that's all.

I'm actually more curious about Song Yong Ah's role other than two. She will play a villain, right? JCW on the other hand looks like a hero who then later saves his woman (sounds a lot like JW in Yong Pal).
Yoona's role sounds intriguing too. Maybe her acting will be improved a lot due to change of character.I'm not particularly like her acting, but won't avoid her. In some aspects, she could do good job. Who knows she is better in meatier role? I'm giving her chance because she did even slightly, showed her improvement in her each works. If she is going to be like Han Yeo Jin in Yong Pal, then I'm all in. I am extremely biased I guess, because I enjoyed second half of Yong Pal the most.

hi
I would like to confess that i am a long time reader of drama beans and an occasional commentator and I love this site because of the positive comments and atmosphere. However i have noticed a recent trend of actor bashing even before the drama airs. I used to be a bit proud that we international fans are more mature than the korean audience who cry over casting. I thought we gave equal opportunity to everything even underdog dramas like healer and make them hits if they are deserving.
Now it's not that I love poona or suzy or baekhyun but i seem to notice a lot of commenting on the casting process.
It started with young I guess the night scholar casting started the begging to not act and now it seems to be eacalating.

i would love if we were back to the original spirit of the site. If we watch and find an actor lacking an experienced one also we can call them out but this crying over casting is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Please try to remember times when a casting utterly surprised us. remember AM1994 go ara, sometimes casting does have a reason.

but then sometimes it is just a bad decision. i believe in spreading positivity. So, fighting to every actor idol and non idol to find their groove and constantly improve themselves.

I will have faith in you yoona until I watch more than 20 mins of your acting

P.S. this is not directed to anyone and is said in the most respectful tone with a wish that our community remains the same as ever.

Ha, you sound like my mom when she yells at the TV. I keep trying to tell her that they can't hear her, but I don't think it's getting through.

This is all well and good but now I'm confused. Who exactly is supposed to be the wanna be president here? Her husband or her father?
Is this like some weird ass family game of passing the parcel?

the presidential candidate is yoona's father and song yoona's husband. the latter is technically the former's stepmother.

The candidate president will be played by Jo Sung Ha, Song Yoona's husband and Yoona's biological father if that's not confusing to you.

I may be a little weird here but when I saw the trailer (the first one with Ji Chang Wook)vI can't help but to be reminded of Fantastic ep 1 scene where Joo Sang Wook is practicing for his script for Hitman. Even the character is named as K..

I don't know this is merely a coincidence or what >.<

I'm not a fan, but I find Yoona to be a decent actress. Who knows she might be ok or even good in this one. She seemed to have improved since her earlier roles.

Based on the story's description, I feel like I've seen this somewhere (a Hollywood movie?)... I can't quite figure out what, but it's awfully familiar to me.

Oh LOL, silly us! And for some reason my mobile does thing of showing several links of the same video on one page so now I'm dizzy and my head is full of JI CHANG-WOOK'S images. Not complaining though, not at all.

These teasers look so, I'm so pumped for the drama itself. IT HAS TO BE GOOD. JI CHANG-WOOK= ??????

I just realised I've only seen Yoona in 9 End 2 Outs which is from almost ten years ago. I hope she's improved a lot, but she's been the lead in several dramas so I am cautiously optimistic. Besides it sounds like Song Yoon Ah's role is pretty significant, can't be worried about the acting here. FIGHTING K2!

p.s how is the titel ~The K2~ pronounced in Korean? Tehkeeteh? Hehe

Yep, she was 16/17 and I believe it was her first acting gig. Man, she was bloody annoying. Never thought I'd watch her in anything again...but JI CHANG-WOOOOOOOOOOK. <3
I can't find anywhere how much they've filmed, but JCW arrived 2 days ago in Spain(soooo close but sooo far way!) so I guess they'd maybe shoot some backstory of the future first daughter kidnapping abroad. Oh and remember JCW and the kitten stills?? GAH hopefully two episodes worth of all that cute...

It's like how JCW pronounced it in the voiceover in his teaser.

Teasers like architect undergrads- " how do we make this innovative? Dude, just take the completed work and flip it upside down, works everytime."
*Also applies to driving apparently.

Excited for Wookie tho!

OK, I read through all the comments to see if anyone knew why they all started upside down, so thanks for your comment, that pretty much explains it.

if there's a love story, they'd better not love then separate forever at an airport after she gets winged - but only lightly - by a paid assassin that JCW's character knows and maybe is friends with.

because i've seen that movie, and i don't want to look at JCW and see kevin costner, lol. though JCW would be the bodyguard to the limit.

here's hoping for a good story and also for good acting from everyone to go with it. go get'em, JCW!

I'm excited because its JCW but not excited because its the Yongpal mess writers.
Havent decide which team will wins but I'm no hurry to watch it. Probably will need to read the recap and comments first~

Yoona is going to have to improve leaps as Ji Chang Wook can micro emote like there is no tomorrow....
I really want to watch this for Ji Chang Wook, but I don't know if I can stand Yoona's acting..... sigh
