Ryu Hwa-young nabs leading role as unsmiling weathercaster in KBS drama special

Yay! Rising actress Ryu Hwa-young (Age of Youth) has confirmed her first leading role in a new KBS drama special titled Disqualified Laughter. She is set to play the role of Shin Na-ra, a weathecaster whose beauty is praised by all, but is considered an “unsmiling princess” by men. Her ideal man is someone who can bring her to laugh, and a meticulous and humorless meteorologist named Lee Ji-ro tries to win her heart by attempting to do just that.

Previously, Ryu Hwa-young had supporting roles in Ex-Girlfriend Club and Come Back Ajusshi, but her most recent role as Yi-na in the JTBC drama series Age of Youth really put her on the map as a young talent to keep an eye on. She impressed viewers with her portrayal of a no-nonsense roommate who attracted men left and right, only to drop her sugar baby lifestyle in order to embark on her dreams and live independently.

I absolutely loved Ryu Hwa-young in Age of Youth and am so happy to see her land her first leading role! She showed a range of emotions and a vulnerability in Age of Youth, so I can already picture her as a weathercaster who doesn’t just flash a smile for anyone, but wants to find her laughter.

Disqualified Laughter is expected to air sometime in September.

For once, I do hope either Viki or Dramafever will carry this special. They are known not to carry the licenses for most of KBS shorter "special" dramas and I would love to see RHY in this. I love her slow and steady climb from small roles and bit parts to lead role. And she has proven she has the acting chops for this, plus she's so natural on screen, beautiful with a killer body. You go girl!

The good news is that KBS eventually subs most if not all their specials and puts them on youtube, so we'll have a legal source with subs even if Viki or DF don't pick them up.

KBS is da MVP in putting up subbed videos on Youtube!

True. I've seen a lot of their eng subbed drama specials in YT. No need for DF or Viki license.

True and not true. Viki has about 40 KBS drama specials, only they don't have their own page each, so they cannot be searched. They are bundled in 5 collections of 8-10 each.
Here are the titles so that you can easily search them:

Romantic Comedy Drama Specials Part 1
Romantic Comedy Drama Specials Part 2
Unexpected-Life Drama Specials
Crime and Film Noir Drama Specials
School-Themed Drama Specials

The bundling is completely random, because many of the so-called Romantic Comedies are heartbreaking melodramas (like the excellent This Kind Of Love, about a convict with a fatal illness and a battered wife, or others), whereas the "school-themed" are called thus even if one of the characters happens to be school age.

Yes! Haha!

Appearance-wise, she's a taller, healthier-looking Park Shin Hye. Lol.

I love how she brings so much more to what could have been a basic 'beautiful sexy seductress' kind of role. I adore Kang unnie, and I'm not even halfway through Age of Youth!

Hope this is a sign of better things to come for Hwayoung's acting career - she certainly has the talent, and in a looks-focused industry, even on that score she's BOMB. She may look like Park Shin-hye but they're nothing alike in terms of acting styles.

The first time I watched her in Ex-Girlfriend Club and honestly imo she stole scenes from Song Ji-hyo. Then I watched her cameo/ supporting in Coma Back Ahjusshi...

Glad Age Of Youth opened fans eyes about her including me. I'm officially her fan. She has the beauty, killer body and... talent.Basically she has all the assets for the industry.

That description sounds so funny! :D I'm sad it's only 1 ep. Can't we have 2-3? *puppy eyes at KBS*

And can we have her co-star be the bestfriend gigolo from Age of Youth? It's just... I had a shipping quota. And it wasn't 100% fulfilled.

Ah, I need my Dong-joo-fix (Yoon Jong-Hoon) too! The way he looked at her in AOY just killed me.

I wish someone would give this dude a leading role. I liked him since Misaeng, but can't remember him in Reply 1994 since I kinda/didn't really watch it. If anyone knows which episodes he's in, please let me know.

He appeared in many episodes of Reply 1994 though in very short scenes each time since his role was just one of Go Ara's collegemate. He's been in a lot of cable's drama especially tvN eventhough he sort of typecasted as that bitchy friend/classmate/officemate sidekick kinda role. Hopefully sometime he gets his hit for a role soon-ish!

I watched a few episodes of Riders: Catch Tomorrow and he played a totally different character, so it was good to see his range.

He has the most scenes in the first few episodes, probably until episode 10 or 12. If you're watching the Reply 1994 drama just for him, you can fast forward to Go Ara's scenes at school/college and at her part-time job. When Chil Bong asked for food delivery, he was the one who went with Na Jung.

I don't know if I remember correctly but he wasn't in the latter episodes anymore...

Yes, they had so much chemistry with Gigolo Bestfriend! Although I don't think that's likely to happen but I would be really happy if they cast him as the male lead!

I first noticed her in Come Back Ajusshi.. Already knew of her & her twins since their idol days but that's it

In AOY, my initial impression was Oh, this is PSH when she grows up.. Lol.. Only to find out RHY is younger than PSH. Must be the height

PSH definitely is baby face. Even currently she kinda looks matured for Doctors, but I think it is more on her makeup & style. Hwa Young on the other hand is taller and has more mature vibes.

she did really well with her part in age of youth. my favorite of the four. and i was surprised by how expressive her face could be. although, maybe that's just her face looks and not necessarily a testament to her acting skills. i'm a bit cautious of making an overstatement on her, since she hasn't done very much yet. but from what she HAS done so far, she seems really promising.

she had a small part in come back mister too, and even there she made an impression on me. i remember thinking her facial expressions seemed surprisingly good, and for such a small role, she brought a bit of depth to her character.

I love her so much. With right direction & roles she can shine. Praying hard she will not just stuck being a bitchy second female lead in the future. We all how many underrated actresses who just stuck playing same roles over & over again, and just stay at secondary / supporting roles for ages and someone who cannot act being the first lead, which is really frustrating.

I wonder who will be her partner here, the reunion with his bf in AoY would be a good idea ✌

Agree with the biased casting trend in korean dramas which tend to underrate talented ,skilled actresses/actors by giving them secondary roles and assigning inexperienced weak actors/actresses especially idol stars with no acting talents as leading characters. One notable example (honest opinion) is Kim Tae Hee and Suzy who are just beautiful stars with no acting chops.

KTH had improved ever since "My Princess" (which was one of the better performances in a romcom).

Agreed, I wish producers and directors would actually give the chance to trained actresses who actually have potential in them. And the actresses you mentioned, they should just stick to characters they can pull off.

I will add acting prodidgy IU, I am against them acting in supporting roles, but they get leading rols cause they have selling power, tho I don't remember Suzy's dramas doing that well and heard that her movie was a flop

I doubt Suzy alone has that much selling power but yes everything nowadays is for profit and she has the selling power in China especially.

KTH was bad in her earlier days, but after My Princess she started to improve. She basically carried My Princess on her own. At least for me, KTH never screaming and yelling the way Suzy do. Again, I'm extremely biased because I love KTH and I acknowledge she is not really a good actress.

Suzy and Jin Se Yeon basically in the same class in acting. I wonder how more dramas to be given to them in order for them to prove they can act.

KTH's early work (and esp. her films) were cringe-worthy, but she did heck of a job in "My Princess" - doing all the "heavy work" (emotional scenes and bringing the funny) to SSH's "straight-man" role.

KTH did a better job as Seol than many more acclaimed actresses have done in any romcom of theirs.

Just like Lee Yeon-hee for "Miss Korea" and Nana for the Korean adaptation of the TGW - you never know when an actress will improve or just gets lucky w/ a project (w/ an able script and a talented PD to bring out the best).

Figured AoY would be a stepping stone for the relative newbie young actresses in the cast and not surprised at all that RHY is the 1st to see fruition.

W/ RHY, Park Hye-soo, Park Eun-bin, Lee Seon-bin, etc. - there may be hope for K-actresses in their early/mid 20s (and not just the likes of Park Bo-young and Shim Eun-kyung carrying the torch).

There seemed to be a dearth of talented actresses in that age group unlike the 14-19 yrs age group where there are numerous talented actresses.

There are actually so many talented actresses in 20s go waste, because no star power/ no backup .. Which is sad.

You're right - probably a good bit more out there, but they need good roles in well written dramas (those soap-oriented dramas don't do them any favors as they tend to be all fluff and focused on the "pretty").

Im glad shes getting a lead role! Ive liked er since her idol days when she was supposed to debut with her twin sister but then debuted in T-ara. Its good to see she had another chance in the industry and that shes doing well! Even tho shes great as the sexiest of the bunch, its good shes going to portray what sounds like a serious professional woman because I think she can do a variety of roles and she can avoid being typecasted.
