Shopping King Louis: Episode 3

These two are so cute together, I can’t even stand it. Bok-shil and Louis are growing closer the more time they spend together, finding an easy rhythm and camaraderie as if they’ve known each other for years. It’s easy to forget that they’re both so innocent of the world, that dangers lurk around every corner, waiting to take advantage of a couple of kids who barely know how to survive in the big city.

EPISODE 3: “She”

Bok-shil wakes early for work, covering the sleeping Louis with a newspaper and leaving him a few dollars for lunch. Louis narrates, “In my new beginning, she was there.”

Bok-shil makes it to work after taking the wrong bus, then Joong-won slips on spilled water and yells at her to clean it up. As she nears and he realizes who she is, he also narrates, “In my new beginning, she was there.”

Louis sits at home, bored, until he realizes he’s not as alone as he thought. He spots a bug on the wall and freaks completely out, flees the apartment, then just sits on the stairs for lack of anywhere else to go. A man with an umbrella approaches, wearing the same tracksuit Louis is wearing, and grins at him with a cheerful, “Hello, stranger!”

He throws his arm around Louis and leads him down the street, asking personal questions that Louis can’t answer. Behind them, someone in a hoodie watches them walk away together.

Bok-shil recognizes Joong-won right away and grabs him by the shirt, calling him a thief and demanding her money. He pushes her off, not very hard, but Bok-shil falls to the floor unconscious.

Joong-won calls for an ambulance, and one of his employees runs up to their office to spread the gossip. The younger male employee, Do-jin, jumps to Joong-won’s defense, but Mr. Lee says that it’s possible their boss has a hidden violent side. Okay, he creeps me out.

Ma-ri can’t stop thinking about the guy she saw in the elevator, and she checks the building’s CCTV footage. She goes pale when she sees Louis’s face, but Louis is supposed to be dead.

Louis’s new friend JO IN-SUNG (*snort*) takes him out for fishcakes, and Louis tells him about waking up with no memory. He shows In-sung where he had a bump on the back of his head, and In-sung says that he probably got amnesia from his injury. In-sung seems friendly enough, but something about him gives me the shivers, especially when he comments that Louis looks like a rich boy.

As it turns out, Bok-shil collapsed from malnutrition, and Joong-won has her moved to a private VIP room. Her boss comes to bring her street clothes and runs into Joong-won, who pulls her aside to talk.

She swears she’s not related to Bok-shil, worried he’ll expect her to pay the hospital fees, but he just wants to talk about Bok-shil’s job. Her boss says Bok-shil is a hard worker, but she’s obviously poor and shabby. She mentions that Bok-shil was swindled out of a valuable ginseng, and ha, Joong-won’s expression goes all shifty.

Back in Bok-shil’s room he looks at her clothes, sighing at the state of her raggedy shoes. Bok-shil finally wakes, and the moment she recognizes Joong-won, she pops up and starts shaking him again, heh. She belatedly realizes she’s in a hospital bed, and Joong-won defensively says that he didn’t shove her to the ground, or steal her ginseng.

He hands Bok-shil an envelope containing four thousand dollars, nearly the full value of the ginseng (and four times what she asked for it). Bok-shil thanks Joong-won profusely, and he informs her that starting next week, she works for his department. She starts to argue that she doesn’t even know what merchandising is, but he tells her to just obey.

Louis waits on the patio for Bok-shil to come home, and he lights up like a Christmas tree when he finally sees her trudging up the road. He runs down to meet her, and she tells him excitedly that she finally got paid for her ginseng. Louis gasps at the cash, then pouts that he wanted to find the guy for her. You cutie.

She brings him hotteok for dinner (pancakes filled with sugar and nuts), and he’s so hungry he shoves one in his mouth whole. He tells her he can’t go inside because there’s a bug, taking her in to show her, then he screams like a little girl when he sees it again.

Bok-shil grins at the tiny thing, and gently takes it outside while Louis squeals, ”It has so many legs! Don’t touch it!” HEE. Bok-shil turns back and gives Louis the biggest smile, and it’s his turn to be stunned. She looks like an angel, all backlit and beautiful. He has a quick flash of a memory of her face, but when he asks if they’ve met before, Bok-shil says that they haven’t.

Louis’s grandma refuses to eat when her secretary Jung-ran sets out a meal for her. Butler Kim steps in and offers Grandma Louis’s favorite breakfast, but when Grandma shows interest, Jung-ran yanks Butler Kim into the house.

She gets right up in his face with a frightening smile, and cheerfully asks if he wants her to break his nose. He’s in her territory, and she makes it clear that he’s not to interfere with Grandma again. Okay, I ship these two.

Bok-shil takes Louis out for a big breakfast, then on a shopping spree with their newfound money. Louis discovers his talent for spotting quality goods, pointing out the best things for Bok-shil to buy for their new home.

They stop for lunch and Bok-shil asks how Louis is so good at shopping, and he tells her that the items tell him to buy them (and she calls him crazy, heh). Louis suggests they go clothes shopping next, complaining about being stuck in Bok-nam’s obvious knockoff tracksuit, and Bok-shil cries that she bought it for him. Louis goes into this complicated explanation of the Louis Ssaton online promotion, which goes right over Bok-shil’s head.

Louis has fun strutting his stuff for Bok-shil, then declares everything she tries on to be pretty. After they make their purchases, Louis thinks they should get cell phones, pointing out to Bok-shil that everyone has a cell phone. He tells her you can shop, watch TV, even take pictures with them, and she remembers Bok-nam begging her for a phone.

She’s unconvinced, until Louis says that a cell phone can help them track Bok-nam. Soon they both have brand-new phones, and the first thing Louis does is take Bok-shil’s picture, ha.

He gets all whiny when it’s time to lug all their new stuff home, then they’re both surprised when In-sung pops up right under their noses. Bok-shil is nonplussed by In-sung’s oddly personal questions, but Louis thinks he’s just the bee’s knees, and they’re both impressed when he takes them grocery shopping.

Bok-shil goes to show her detective friend her new cell phone, sure it can help them find Bok-nam. He says it’s not that simple, that Bok-nam would have to have a phone for that to work, and her face falls.

She goes home to set up her and Louis’s apartment, while he pouts because she’s putting up a curtain to separate their sleeping spaces. In-sung shows Bok-shil how to use the gas range, then both guys watch as she deftly does the laundry. Louis comments that she would make a great maid, and In-sung gives him this weird look.

Bok-shil finds Louis’s fancy undies, which he snatches away from her shyly. He reads the name stitched on the back, “Louis,” and it’s odd how he instinctively knows the company doesn’t usually make underwear. They decide that Louis must be his name, and he smiles, liking the sound of it.

At dinner that night, Ma-ri asks her mother if Louis had a twin. Jae-sook says he was an only child and didn’t have any birth secrets, and Ma-ri’s father looks worried when she says she saw someone at the company who looked just like Louis.

We see what happened on the day Louis arrived in Korea — Director Baek had picked him up as planned, but he’d ignored Grandma’s edict not to let Louis drive, and given him the car keys. He’d made a call, and soon after, Louis’s car was hit by a truck and flipped. We see Louis lying bloodied in the flaming car, then Director Baek in his office, smiling, saying that Louis was dead.

But he somehow survived, and now he’s sitting down to a barbecue with Bok-shil and In-sung. In-sung digs in first, grabbing up all the meat, making Louis whine that he’s not getting any.

Bok-shil tells the guys that she’s going to be working in the merchandising department from now on, though she’s uncertain what they actually do. In-sung thinks it’s a ploy to get rid of her after she accused Joong-won of being a swindler, by moving her to an area where she’ll fail and quit. Louis chooses to see the positive side, that Joong-won saw potential in Bok-shil.

Bok-shil’s boss wanders upstairs, and AHA, it turns out that In-sung is her son. She also helps herself to the meat, though Louis tries futilely to save some for Bok-shil when she goes inside for sauce.

Louis and Bok-shil lie on their sides of the curtain that night, but neither of them can sleep. Bok-shil is thinking about her brother, wondering if he’s eating, and Louis promises to get his memory back and find Bok-nam. Bok-shil muses that they still don’t have a lot of things, but Louis tells her to let him buy them and not to worry.

Bok-shil says a sweet, “Sleep well, Louis-ya,” and Louis thinks to himself that she finally called his name.

In the morning, Louis trails after Bok-shil as she leaves for work, thinking she should wear her new clothes instead of her mother’s old dress. Bok-shil refuses and Louis follows her all the way to the bus stop, then pulls out a handkerchief. He folds it into a rose and pins it to Bok-shil’s throat, getting veeery close in the process, and Bok-shil definitely notices.

Louis gives her this adorable grin, as if he has no idea the effect he has on her, and says the rose makes her look pretty. Well, swoon.

Bok-shil makes her way to the merchandising department, where Joong-won introduces her as their new teammate. He says she’ll intern for a month, after which they’ll decide whether to hire her on permanently.

Joong-won discusses his department’s plans with Director Baek, who asks about his hiring a janitorial worker for his team. Joong-won says he thinks they can groom her into a good team member, but when he goes back to his office, he finds his team complaining to Bok-shil’s face about how little she knows.

He interrupts to send her for coffee, but she grows overwhelmed when everyone else places an order and she has no idea what the fancy words mean. Suddenly Ma-ri offers to go with her to help, and Bok-shil looks at her as if she’s an angel, wings and all. But when her back is turned, Ma-ri gets an evil glint in her eye that I don’t like.

When Ma-ri easily rattles off everyone’s orders at the coffee shop, Bok-shil is blinded with admiration. It’s Ma-ri’s turn to get a backlit slow-mo moment, as Bok-shil gazes at her adoringly.

Louis uses his new phone to google people named Louis, looking for a clue to his identity, with no luck. In-sung shows up just in time for lunch and helps himself to Louis’s food, then tells Louis that they need a rice maker. It takes Louis about five seconds to order one with his phone.

Later, In-sung wants coffee, but Louis doesn’t know how to boil water. In-sung teaches him, telling him to buy a stove and electric kettle, which Louis does right away. In-sung wonders how Louis could know nothing of kitchen equipment, and asks if he was possibly kept locked up for years. Cue Oldboy spoof, ha.

But In-sung decides that Louis has to much of the rich vibe for that, and next he thinks maybe he was terminally ill. But no, he’s too healthy for that. He figures Louis was just a spoiled rich kid, hitting it right on the nose, but Louis’s love for cheap instant coffee has him dropping that theory almost immediately.

Joong-won’s mother sighs sadly over the death of the chairwoman’s grandson, then wonders when Joong-won will settle down and get married. He may be closer to meeting someone than she thinks, as Bok-shil barrels into Joong-won racing the elevator door, and his heart goes pitter-pat at the close contact. He fusses at her, asking rhetorically if she’s got someone special waiting at home, but her guilty expression gives her away.

Joong-won stops to buy some shoes on his way home, and a sweet little pair of heels catches his eye. He contemplates the heels, remembering Bok-shil’s tattered old sneakers.

Louis is glued to the television as Bok-shil mops around him, and he sees a place that looks really familiar. He even knows what’s around the corner of the street being shown onscreen, though the show he’s watching is about Europe.

In-sung calls them outside and tells Bok-shil that he and Louis have started a new company, dedicated to finding Bok-nam. They’ll go around passing out flyers and Louis will even sing, and she just has to pay them for their food and travel expenses. Huh, sounds more like In-sung figured out a way to get paid to stand around.

Bok-shil falls for In-sung’s scheme, and signs the agreement he’s drawn up. In-sung tries to coax Louis to sing the song they wrote, but Louis has an attack of the shy in front of Bok-shil.

In-sung fibs to his mother, saying only that he’s gotten a job with flexible hours, though he does pass out flyers with Louis for a little while before talking him into going shopping. Louis uses his ability to spot quality items to score them some nice stuff, and when In-sung calls him a “shopping king,” Louis thinks it sounds familiar.

He hears a little knick-knack calling his name — just a little penguin music box, that sings “When You Wish Upon a Star.” But the tune sparks a memory of a little boy saying a prayer, then a car spinning out of control, and Louis doubles over in pain.

He won’t let go of the trinket, so In-sung has to pay a shocking amount for it since it’s a limited edition. Louis goes straight to bed, and Bok-shil notices that the music box is stamped “Gold Department Store.”

Louis’s grandma looks over Louis’s favorite beach, remembering when he used to play here with his dog, which he named Koboshi. Nobody knew what the word “koboshi” meant, and little Louis would only say it was a secret. Koboshi had lived for fourteen years, and Louis had been bereft when he died.

The following morning Louis researches the music box, and discovers that Gold Department Store only made thirty of them, in honor of the store’s thirtieth anniversary. Bok-shil tells him to stay home and rest today, though she smiles when Louis insists on going out to look for Bok-nam.

Bok-shil asks why Louis follows her around all the time, and he says matter-of-factly, “Because I like you.” Oh. She fusses at him for making her blush, but he just shoves more ham in his mouth and grins at her.

At work, Bok-shil uses her new computer to search for Gold Department Store, and the article about Louis’s supposed death pops up. She makes the connection that Gold Department Store and the company she works for are owned by the same entity. Joong-won sees her searching online and accuses her of slacking off, berating her in front of the entire team.

Louis gets a call from a scammer claiming to be from the Financial Supervisory Service, asking if he’s lost his ID card. Louis says that he has, and asks what his name is, and the scammer says it’s Song Joong-ki. HA. Louis doesn’t know any better and believes him, and the scammer knows he’s got one on the hook.

He tells Louis that a ring of scammers has targeted him, works him up into a tizzy, and instructs him to send all of his money to a designated bank account for safekeeping. Louis falls for it and sends all of Bok-shil’s remaining money to the scammer, and doesn’t realize until after the jerk hangs up that he’s been robbed.

Bok-shil arrives home that night to an empty apartment, and finds a note from Louis saying not to look for him. He’s too ashamed to face her, and when he’d gone to In-sung for help, he’d whined that he just wanted to know who he was. Awww.

He sits on a bench late into the night, and he happens to see a dog wander by without its owner. He experiences a dim memory of his old pet, and he chases the dog, calling out to it, “Koboshi!” (which sounds an awful lot like “Go Bok-shil”).

The dog stops next to a fire hydrant, which triggers another memory of Louis falling and hitting his head on a similar hydrant. He calls to the dog again, then hears an angry voice nearby, and he looks over to see Bok-shil.

She looks furious, and she strides over to confront him, glaring at Louis without a word.

COMMENTS

Aww, I feel so bad for Louis (even as I’m laughing at the cheeky nod towards Seo In-gook’s last drama, Police Unit 38, by having him get swindled the same way he swindled others), but I guess it was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to trick him out of the money. And as worldly as Bok-shil seems next to Louis, it’s easy to forget that she’s also extremely innocent in the ways of modern technology and society, so she was just as likely to be swindled as Louis. It was only dumb luck that he was the one who got tricked first.

I’m honestly surprised that Louis is getting his memories back so soon, and so quickly, because there’s so much comedy gold to be mined from his haplessness in the big wide world. I love his and Bok-shil’s relationship, and the way they’re already forming their own little family. I could watch them go shopping and just enjoy each other’s company all day long, and never get tired of Bok-shil’s enthusiasm or Louis’s wide-eyed admiration of her. But Louis’s glimpses of his old life also make me eager to see where the story will take us if he regains his memory so quickly — so long as it doesn’t veer too far from the cute and get bogged down in business maneuverings. Director Baek makes a menacing bad guy so long as there’s not too much of him, but I’d hate to see the show go the way of, for example, Rooftop Prince, which started out so fun, but let all the cuteness be displaced in the last half by company feuds nobody cared about. Keep the focus on Louis and Bok-shil and their wonderful chemistry, please!

Speaking of chemistry, I’m dismayed at the lack of such between Joong-won and Bok-shil. Thankfully they’ve finally started spending some time around each other, but I’m still left scratching my head at Joong-won’s attraction to Bok-shil. It’s like we’re being told he likes her, but the show isn’t really showing us much, and it’s confusing when Joong-won stares wistfully at a pair of pink heels one minute, then publicly humiliates Bok-shil the next. We know he doesn’t like conventionally pretty woman, but we’ve been shown very little to explain why he seems to like Bok-shil in particular, so the moments where we’re supposed to see that seem oddly disconnected. I believe it’s a flaw in the writing and not the acting, as I’ve been a fan of Yoon Sang-hyun for years now, and I know that he’s capable of generating chemistry with just about anyone when he wants to. But this show just isn’t giving him much to work with — though it’s still early days, I want to see him given more of a chance to connect with Bok-shil.

In the meantime, I do like the way Louis is slowly regaining his memories in little bits and pieces, even if I’m surprised at it happening so soon. They’re just enough to unsettle him, but not so much that he’s desperate to learn more. On the contrary, Louis looks to be alarmed and scared by them. It feels like he’s trying instinctively to hang onto his new life, knowing that he has more love and friendship here than he had before. And I’m appreciating even more that his memory loss didn’t cause his basic personality to change, because I wouldn’t want him to have gone from a cold chaebol to this cuddle-kitten, and risk losing the sweet Louis we know now once he remembers who he is. Even when he finds his memories again, he’ll still be the thoughtful, silly, warm-hearted Louis we’re all falling for, Bok-shil included.

This episodes was comparatively slower than ep 2 and it felt a little boring at times.

BTW Cyber Phishing seems to be a major problem in S.Korea these days. Both JI and SKL featured it.

True. I hope the darama doesn't loose its 1st and 2nd episode rythm here.. I don't want to loose interest on this drama too, like several others (it just can't be helped sometimes, i just stop wondering and stop watching).

Really enjoying this show. And this couple. I was a little hesitant to start, but since it's SIG I couldn't not watch! So glad I gave it a chance because, like you, I think they are adorable together. I do wish they hadn't gone with the murder line in this though. It is way too heavy and WAY too cliche. Are there really that many people willing to kill so easily? And why isn't there anyone questioning where the body is??? Did I miss something?

I'm just speculating, but I think there was a body, but it was Bok-shil's brother who'd somehow stolen Louis's car. If the remains were burned beyond recognition (shudder), maybe they just assumed it was Louis.

I might be wrong, but I think this show is a little too sweet to kill off the brother. If there was a body, it was probably someone else from the brother's gang.

I think there was a body too, but I think Bok-Shil's brother saved Louis. Maybe the gang Bok-Nam had hung out with tried to carjack Louis, the wreck happened, Bok-Nam saved Louis and gave him his clothes but left him because he was afraid of getting in trouble.

Or something like that.

I'm hoping for the same.. they barricaded Louis car (that explains spinning car)in fist fight they shoved him... Louis fell and hit his head(there is no other injury of car crash) robbed his clothes & took his car... got into the crash & one of the gang member died...

This is pretty much what I was speculating last week. I thought Director Baek order the car "accident", and I was right. I didn't think Louis was actually in the car, and I still don't. For one thing, Louis did not appear to be as seriously injured as a person in that serious of an accident. I think that Director Baek saw someone who at a glance would resemble Louis and assumed it was him. After all, why wouldn't Louis be in the car.

I think that the gang waylaid him before the ambush point and one of the members drove off with the car. I don't think that it was Bok Nam. I think that Bok Nam probably did something to help Louis that got him in trouble with the rest of the gang. I think that he's the unknown figure in the hooded jacket who has been watching Louis and/or Bok Shil.

yes, Bok Nam is most likely in the hiding for SOMETHING he did.

but the head that was tilting out of the car window in a flashback seemed like Louis. So maybe he was dragged out of the car or got out and passed out, then the gang found him there?

Gah - I hate waiting to find stuff out. (I'm the person who always wants to give Christmas and birthday gifts as soon as I buy them, and yes, as a child, I sneaked in and peeked at my Christmas gifts early. Patience is NOT my middle name! lol)

Another deja vu from Police Unit 38, the baddie businessman was the first target to be taken down is now Jo In-Sung (LOL), but he still retains the sleaziness in his willingness to take advantage of the poor girl, getting wages and free food from her without her realising she's been hoodwinked....

Just wondering, why doesn't Louis get a job? Is it the lack of ID that's hindering him, but he'll be perfect as a fashion stylist, just saying. This is the first time I saw a guy look so happy trying on clothes :D But all this cuteness and fluff doesn't quite match the previous high-quality feel of Seo In-guk's prior dramas; had my eye on him since Hello Monster and Police Unit 38....

While I agree that the character of Louis is not as heavy as SIG's characters in previous dramas, SIG has impressed me with his total commitment to portraying Louis to the hilt. From the pouty faces and chipmunk cheeks full of food, to the "Oh my god!" exclamations, all the way to how he runs or walks - SIG has totally embodied this character and it is both impressing me and cracking me up. Even just looking at the screencaps makes me laugh.

I assume Louis will become more serious as he gains his memories and gets thrust into the business side of things but it will be sad if/when that happens because this version of Louis is just so full of joy and wonder.

he is always in character in all his dramas. so much you think he was born like that. He is very good at physical comedy and acting with his whole body, that running, and wiggling, and strutting and looking guilty but I bet they also discuss and play around with the director and costars how to do something.

I don't think he even knows that to earn money to spend, anyone has to work. I actually had to speed some scenes cause I started to get stressed out on how the two just go on spending free with no care in the world how they're going to survive to pay next month's rent. Of course this is totally believable, cause Louis grew up very sheltered and can buy anything he wants without having to work for any of it. He never even cared for how much things were, still doesn't, when he went into buying stuff through his phone. But watching all of that care-free and how the hyung pretty much is another swindler (just in a kinder form, but swindler nevertheless), kinda make me wanna say "Please somebody help these two innocent kids! Jaebal!"

I love this show! The humor can be either right in your face or under such angle you have to think a little and rewind the scene in your mind to get the hint. I like when a show is a bit demanding and hides little easter eggs here and there. Like the rainbow colored umbrella, under which "Jo In Sung" took Louie. I wonder how many takes it took them not to burst out laughing when they had to say "In Sung. Jo In Sung." or "So my name is Song Joong Ki???"

I like the reveres gender stereotypes and it is especially amusing to see Louie SCREAM and run from a bug when you have seen Law of The Jungle IndoChina where he grabs and touches everything that moves. How Bok Shil leaves him money and everything.

I just, wait a minute, I´ll come back after I grab a bite because they ate so damn much in this episode. They were eating in almost every scene! and even though the thing I hate the most is when people speak with their mouth full, here, between the two guys ONLY eating their mouth full it was so funny I chuckled for 3 minutes.

I love all the comedy gold in this show and for that I'm definitely going to keep watching. Also loving the chemistry between the leads however the only thing that really bugs me is how absolutely useless Louis is. He's beyond helpless puppy (even a puppy can go fetch the newspaper for you and be of some use). When Bok Shil was cleaning, the least he could have done was help her clean the place!!! Argh!!! I know it's in line with his "immature heir" character but I would have liked the amnesia at least help shed some of that.

Other than that, I really hope Louis or In Sung discover the diamonds on that underwear are real!

I think the show is deliberately trying to establish how useless he is, so that we see him actually learning everything from Bok Shil. He really does not know how to work and help Bok Shil but he will learn. Just keep faith :) This is partly what the show is about- how they will both learn new things from each other.

I feel like such a heathen for shipping Bok-shil with Joong-won. I had a similar problem while watching I Can Hear Your Voice. Something about Yoon Sang-hyun just seems to give me Second Lead Syndrome. And for the record, I don't even think he looks particularly attractive in this drama.

All that heathenism aside, I really enjoy this oddball of a show. The relationship between Bok-shil and Louis is sweet and sincere and there's a lot of growth potential for both the characters and their future romance. I also like the focus on family and friendship, especially in the way both leads get to slowly adjust to their new environment instead of immediately falling into swoony love. Feels way more genuine and mature.

not shipping them, hope he wont become all entitled and think Bok Shil ows him herself "for all he´s done!" but I find it interesting that there is a similar kind of immaturity in him as is in Louie. He likes ice cream, he gets agitated easily like a person with no social experience outside work

I just love the humor of this show. Really hope they don't make it all dramatic for the second half.

Btw was there a BOGO deal at the hair salon for perms before they started filming? Lol

And they weren't kidding, every guy in this SKL-world really has that tracksuit. It also cracks me up that Oh Dae-hwan (I can't call him Jo In-sung rofl, I just can't ?) is always wearing some sort of cartoon sweater.

And it can't be a coincidence that Koboshi sounds so much like Go Bok-shil...

But what is up with this show and its characters' names...according to wiki that detective (who is quite cute btw) is named Nam Joo-hyuk! Pffffft.

This show is so funny and great and my mouth hurts from smiling all throughout it. That's how I measure my dramas. How much my mouth hurts after watching an episode.

I mean, I love action dramas and thrillers like nobody's business, but at the end of the day, laughing and smiling win out and right now, this is my favorite show. I just hope it keeps being adorable and cute because that's what makes it great. Well, that and SIG of course.

I promised myself that I've outgrown fluffy idol dramas, but this one is making a liar out of me!

Seo Inguk is so pretty here I can't handle it!! When did he get this dreamy?? He was a babe in Reply 1997 but he's on an entirely different level now. *swoon*

The main OTP have cute chemistry together, which is just fine for me since the actress is quite young and I'd find sexy scenes a bit creepy. I'm quite pleased with how they subverted the usual tropes here: Louis is a chaebol but he's sweet and sheltered, while Bokshil is Candy-esque but is pretty tough and is the one who's taking care of the lost prince.

Which is why I'm not feeling Joongwon. It's not just the reel life (and real life) age difference that bothers me, it's that it's just that his role in the love triangle is so overdone. Rich, successful guy who rescues the Candy and likes her for reasons unknown? Yawn. And really, what are his reasons? I just don't buy his attraction to Bokshil and I'm glad the recap points that out. There's no genuine feeling there. Meh.

It's a pity that they're putting Mari in the typical bitchy evil second lead role rather than keep her hilariously evil. I liked that though she has ulterior motives for marrying Louis, she's so business-like about it. That's different from other second leads that just cling and cling to the guy. And the girl has ambitions of being the heir herself! LOL.

I find the writers of this drama to be really perverse. Anyone who thinks that getting mugged and beaten, scammed multiple times, money stolen multiple times, mooching by the downstairs neighbors etc, is actually funnym is perverse.

The actors are wonderful, but the script and scenes were unbearable for me and not funny...at .....all.

Has the world gotten so rotten that getting scammed is funny?

it is called irony. it is a different kind of humor. life is tragi-comical. there are situation when shit happens but when it is something you can prevent by acting differently and you dont, then all you can do is curse the scammers, curse yourself a little, curse the prime minister and the garbage truck and the weather, and then laugh it off.

Plus, it also serves the purpose to reinforce how ignorant (I don't mean stupid but unworldly or inexperienced) our leads are. @nomad He is afraid of moths and flies. But he would touch literally anything other than that- if need be. He catches fishes and frogs with his bare hands. I haven't seen the Indo-China season, but in the latest Mongolia season, he has just touched fishes and frogs.

1

except for moths, yes. But anything else be it wherever - in a bush, in a puddle of mud, in a dark pit, in water... He even tried to catch a huge snake but the snake didnt like it. He also said he used to have a pet snake. In Mongolia, the way he skipped away from the moth was exactly like in this drama.

1

This show is just so freakin hilarious, I find myself laughing through almost all of it. I could watch Louis be clueless, cute and stuff his face all day, all day he he. And his chemistry with Bok Shil is off the charts and they're not even in love (yet)!

I guess it's just the fact that Jo In Sung is a very very very handsome actor and actor Oh Dae Hwan would not really be considered traditionally good looking (though I find him to be quite hot). Also, just even keeping your character's name after actors makes them instantly funny.

For instance, over on Drinking Solo, Shinee member Key is playing a character named Kim Ki Bum. Key's real name is ... Kim Ki Bum.

(Actually ALL FOUR of the student bros are playing characters with their own names, except Gong Myung's surname was different, Jin not Kim, to match the lead character his brother).

This happens a lot in K-dramas because the surname pool in Korea is really small and you end up with a lot of "John Smith" like name duplication. So they just lampshade it and go on.

Usually I smirk in most comedic moments of most dramas but man... SIG and ODH know how to play the right comedic keys.

I have to admit that there are a lot of overused drama tropes that are in this drama, but there are enough reversal of drama tropes that I can forgive the writer... I guess. For instance, the first thing I thought of when "Gobossi" was mentioned was "no.... they're going to make Louis and BokShil be childhood friends?" I truly hope not but it's quite high on my drama trope radar... sighs

Either way, I was afraid that the drama would make it too Louis-centered in the affection department since BokShil seemed to see Louis as more of a younger brother figure to her but there were enough hints that BokShil's affections are not purely familial that I just hope today's episode reinforces it!!

Even though Louis is quite oblivious to how to live the commoner life, he is definitely not holding back on showing his love for BokShil <3 His puppyness in the samgyupsal scene was so adorable! I couldn't help but notice that he didn't eat any of the meat either hehe

I read a sad rumor online that MBC is considering cancelling the show due to poor ratings as the premier ratings were so low. I do hope that it is just a rumor because, at the very least they should give the show a chance to pick up.

I admit that the show does seem silly and it's not to everyone's taste. I myself almost dropped it but for SIG, and he's the one keeping me watching it, but I do wish the networks would give it a chance. The ratings are climbing, and though the premier episode was shaky, the drama is getting better.

I would hate for SIG to leave for military service with a cancelled drama on his hands. Fingers crossed!

I'm freaking love the scene where Louie make a rose for Bok Shil blouse, how close and heart fluttering that scene is! Haha I wonder how Nam Ji Hyun keeps her heart in check when you have SIG face up so close to your face, because my poor heart couldn't take it at all!I'm watching episode 3 for the 3rd time already, and believe me, writernim sure has knack for comedy and thank God, they choses SIG to be the main lead, as I couldn't see any actor could play the spoiled rotten, meek rich kid who sheltered all his life.
I do heard about the rumors, but I'm confident that there was nothing to be worried about. This drama wasn't garbage, I have seen more trashy drama with successful ratings that should have been chopped down, as their leads wasn't acting properly at all, and the story wasn't that great as the titles suggest they should be. SKL already has their airing schedule in Japan this November, and I take that as a good sign, because even though SKL is a rom-com drama, it is not a shallow drama. You clearly can feels the feeling that the drama tries to deliver through Louie and Bok Shil view point respectively.
Lastly, I am at lost for words to describe you Seo Inguk ssi! Stop making my heart so flustered with every gestures of your body and your eyes! Hahaha and I loved the ever embarassed Louie when In Sung Hyung asked him to sing in front of Bok Shil. Love, love it too much. Auww, how I ever wish I could swap places with Nam Ji Hyun, hahaha.

I love SIG more in almost every way than BtoB Sungjae, especially as an actor but I personally think 6Sungjae could have done a very good job as Louie as well. In his reality shows, he's very good at playing cute puppy, and he also has that quirkiness and kind of nuts charm that SIG has. Plus, he's also good at whining like a spoiled brat but in such an innocent way u can't hate him (like in that bus in Hainan w/ Joy). Only thing I'm not sure about is his acting skills in dramatic scenes. I think SIG would do a better job there. Personally I'm having a harder time picturing anyone else as Boksil besides NJH.

Anw, I looooove this drama, and whoever created these characters. XOXOXO

I see ur point. Can't deny Seo In Guk is the better actor but Sungjae is basically Louis in real life character wise. He's even coming from an affluent family. He probably would have good chemistry with NJH as well since they're chingu. Seo In Guk is older so it's probably better romance-wise methink but u never know with chemistry.

I'll just anticipate his role in Goblin, and I'm glad Seo In Guk has once again, not disappointed me even though I'll probably wonder (but not mourn) about what could have been.

i don't think Sungjae will fit with other characters especially with Jo In-sung except Bok Shil since they have the same age....So i think Seo In Guk is definitely perfect on this role.

0

i agree w/ above comments that SIG is purffffect for Louie. <3 ^^

but i wanted make a clarification about AJ Dee comment since I know enough about Sungjae even though i don't stan him or btob. i prefer older men. kkkk. i think he would get along w/ jo in sung bc sungjae gets along with everbd. in all the shows, old grandpas, ahjussis, same-age, children, he manages to charm them all. it's fascinating. he has a bit more trouble w/ females but pple who are male, there's no one who dislike him and all dote on him. it's comical almost.

0

I don´t think so. just cause someone is this or that in real life, does not mean they have the chops to play a similar-looking character. Yook Sungjae is, amaIk still an acting newbie and he does not have as vast an archive of expressions as more experienced Seo.
Gukkie isn´t playing Louie well by accident, the thought behind every choice of expression is pretty visible. I totally understand your enthusiasm and trust in your idol, but by just being cute and whining and playing puppy, he would miss the details that actually make a performance.
and when it comes to working with ODH, SIG has worked with him before. their goofy click has visibly gotten more smooth. I would not waste that.

lol @ all of u.

I'm not familiar with Sungjae except for Village of Achiara which I watched for Moon Geun Young, and this is my first Seo In Guk drama, which I'm watching because I'm on a drama draught. Trying to find something to stick to. So I'm fairly neutral about this.

As an outsider, I'm finding this discussion thread so bizarrely funny I'm butting in.

Aren't you overreacting just because someone commented they thought someone else besides Seo In Guk would fit the role? They didn't even say he fit better. I don't have an opinion either way since I don't know much about either of their acting ability at this point.

Didn't even connect Sungjae's name with that cop in Village until I had to google him out of curiosity because of this thread, and 4 episodes is not enough for me to evaluate Seo In Guk. Thus can't comment on the validity of the opinions here. What I know is that the defensive tone Seo In Guk fans are using for their opinions are not making a very good first impression. Isn't it puerile to be this defensive when he wasn't attacked in the first place? lol

Reminds me of kpop fans who are overly shielding the singers or whatnot and made me lose interest in kpop after only a few months in. I didn't switch to dramas for this.

I'm watching dramas to relax from stressful work on the little free time I have. Seeing the catty passive-aggressive behaviors I'm actively trying to escape from work reflected here... had to comment. I will continue to lurk from now on.

I'm not neutral, I'm a SIG fan. However, I agree the comments felt a bit sensitive and aggressive. I'm avoiding threads of LMH dramas like plagues because of over-sensitive fans defending criticism, so I hope SIG fans aren't becoming like that given there was no criticism to start with. Apologies.

On another note, back to fangirling SIG in this behind the scene clip where he sings on the piano during filming. Swoon.

But for some reason, like almost all SIG dramas except for 1997 and Master's Sun, I'm experiencing this perverse satisfaction from pple sleeping on this. Almost as if I don't mind that my taste is not shared. It sorts of makes me love this drama more that it's not mainstream? If that makes sense.

Thanks for the recap.... And I've been scratching my head wondering who smiles like bok-shil, then it hits me that ha neul totally smiles with the whole of his mouth...

And did I remember to confess that I totally heart this couple, even their innocence is endearing and it's totally believable that bok shil could also have lost the money its just a matter of time.

I have so much cute aggression towards Bok Shil and Louis. The more I see them on the screen together, being aborable idiots the more I want to put them in my pocket and take them everywhere. With the show's title and my impression of the first episode, I didn't think I would like it as much as I do but my gosh it's adorable and has all this heart right under the surface. Never change show, never change.

So he HAS been wearing the diamond-encrusted undies all this time! Man, I think I busted a gut laughing right then and there.

This show is so cute and wacky. I hope it stays that way.

P.S. Can I adopt my own Louis? I don't care even if he's absolutely useless. All the cute makes up for it. :P

AHAHAHA

How about ratings for this episode? It is really bad?
Actually I'm already prepared my heart for the low ratings, because many of drama that I watched (which are good, for my taste) had similiar ratings
But, I am really hope they won't cut the episode
IRY survived until the end despite super low ratings (it's only 1-2% right?)

I think he's still a scammer in this drama. I mean, he has no skill, keeps spending money and yet still manages to "scam" Bok shil into helping him on his charms alone (and me into melting at his cuteness instead of being angry). If that's not a scammer... lol.

I was going to reply to the comments above about the ratings, but perhaps this is a better place. While I don't think there's any avarice in your comment whatsoever, Namu, it goes to show that a few misconstrued ideas about a drama's performance can really snowball into "a rumor that the network might cancel..." Personally I wasn't flabbergasted with the premiere's mid 5% because it didn't seem that far off from other dramas premiering around this time. Since I don't read Korean I can't comment on the "relative online disinterest this drama is receiving." It just has me curious how this started.

I did read one article that floated the idea of cancellation due to some 'negative online comments', but comments TO that article took exception, saying there negative commenters were in a small minority.
So take an article like that, a few mentions of a rumor in another article or by commenters, even those who love the drama and say 'please don't cancel', and voila, you have a bona fide threat instead of a media-fed rumor that I'm guessing is pretty baseless. Someone said the ratings tonight for ep 4 were in the mid 7's--but I read on one site that TNms was 8.5 both nationwide and in Seoul, while Neilson was 7.8 and 8.4. This seems like a pretty fast rise to me, fast enough that it will easily exceed SIG's wish for ratings to reach the 10's. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking this is getting better and better and it will be recognized by much stronger ratings. I just wish people -- even those who like it -- would wait a bit before lamenting the performance of a drama on only its 4th episode.

thumbs up for this! the ratings are quite close to other dramas in the slot and even the big production like Moon Lovers (actually surpassing ratings of ep 4-11 nationwide as I understand!) and they are rising with rather big leaps.

I trust in the acting chops of SIG to raise them even higher when he ups the game from pure cute to showing his smarts in the industry (in this case I actually look forward to him entering the corporate world, because it is not villain vs hero but it is greedy ambition & cheating vs natural TALENT in Louie´s case). People in that world want to be no 1 with whatever means. He doesnt care, he just cant help it and does it because he en joys it.

I totally agree with your comments about the rating. It is not that bad, and MBC itself today published an article about the rising and promising of the ratings, as according to some standards Louis is in 2nd place now.
I can read a very little Korean, But I love to read all Korean articles and comments and normally I depend on Naver translater.
For the rumor mentioned above, I doubt It generated from the broadcasting schedule For Masked Singer King Live in next Wednesday, the same time Louis' next episode should be aired. It is not a cut of Louis short, But a schedule conflict and Louis might be delayed or move to Thursday For 2 episodes. There are also articles and comments about the change might hurt Louis' uprising trend.

I have gotten so used to SIG's dramas having poor ratings but remain excellent anyway that it would really be a surprise if SKL runs away a winner in the ratings game. Hehehe (al I hope for is a 10% so I can see SIG as a Shiba Inu in instagram feeds)

BTW, I love that I always see a consistent stream of nicknames in SIG drama threads--it means the quality of the fandom is solid and i'm feeling awfully proud to be part of it. I see it all as a very very very good thing.

;)

All I want is a 10% just so I can follow instagrm photos of In Guk as a Shiba Inu. Haha.

I love that Louis is a useless lump, but somehow still remembers all those facts about brands and stuff. Hilarious how shopping is ingrained in him. If he met Oska instead of Boksil, he could have used his talent to work, but I still wouldn't changed what happened for the world. In other times, I can't stand useless characters but for some reason, I'm getting a kick out of Louis being so aggravating in his uselessness but so adorable Bokshil has no choice but to keep him. Hee.

I like that all 3 of them (bokshil, louis, and jo in sung (LMAO)) have different sets of knowledge so they keep being impressed with each other even though it's not that impressive.

Louis and his shopping can help bokshil with her job.
Bokshil and her everyday pragmatic skills for basic survival.
And Jo in sung and his common knowledge about life that the other two sorely lack to survive in the city. It's kinda cute if you think about it. 3 useless people combining their strength.

I dont think Oska is supposed to like Bokshil in a romantic manner at this point. He's concerned about her because she's helpless and he has some urge to help her ever since the train station. Perhaps he also finds her odd and weird so she caught his interest. But the romantic affection is not supposed to be there. I guess it'll start soon enough once he keeps helping her, since concern can grow to attachment to affection.

I dunno bout u all, but I dont think we're supposed to dislike Jo In Sung. Sure he's a bit cunning, but I think he's not harmful much compared to how he can be helpful to the two with his "street smarts." He's just someone who is useless at home mooching off his mother so the two coming are like two new kids to join the neighborhood, since all 3 are kind of like kids at this point. A bit immature. He'll develop affection for them since it's the first time he'll feel useful in his life. I think he'll continue to do some questionable things but ultimatel is not a villain. He's their first "friend" after all. Just like his mother kept giving Bok Sil a hard time with her phone, but still kinda helped her. I'm guessing the worst he will do is taking advantage of the knowledge of Louis bacckground once he finds out, but still be concerned about Louis and Bok Sil welfare?

Same here. I don't think Jo In Sung and his mother are good in the strictest sense since both act in their advantage (with renting the house and stuff) and don't mind taking advantage of the two and are a bit selfish. But I don't think the two are bad bad either since the two are the onl ones besides from Oska who have helped Bokshil and Louis so far.

I think no character in this drama is purely good besides from Louis and Bokshil (and the butler). Every one else, excluding evil villains who are pure evil, like the thieving grandma, the housekeeper, Mari's mother, the coworkers, etc are all a bit flawed without being "villains."

i just love nam ji hyun as boksil, there is something endearing about it. If it's other actress, i probably wouldn't find them that angelic, pure and innocence.

Also You don't find many drama that keep using the same clothes no matter how 'poor' they are. I love how they keep it real.

Watching this story, I actually kind of keep tab on how much money boksil have/left right now? please don't tell it's only me.

what I am amazed about is when ODH appeared, SIG´s eyes didnt betray even the slightest familiarity. in some dramas you know two actors have acted together before from a tiny flash in their eyes. people usually cant help it. these two... well, there might have been a slight flash in ODH glance. but not SIG

I LOOOVEEE ep 3!!!
Oh my God, I was LOLing a lot throughout the ep.

I really love this three combo of country bumpkin, a super cute amnesiac heir, and mr. job seeker-know-it-all, where all three are so clueless in the society. For me, this feels like a meta joke it self to the title 'shopping king' as well as a critic to our society nowadays.

But what I love most is their interactions. It is SO adorable. It feels like they have their own universe where what only matters is the simple things in life, like food, a place to stay, or kitchen utensil haha.

Oh I might just read too much. The point is I LOVE LOVE LOVE this ep to bits. Everything is SO on point. Nice!

Now, Seo In Guk, oh my goodnesss, how did you make that super adorable facial expressions?!!! Seriously, I won't need any sugar anymore in my life. SIG as Louis is SOOO SWEETTT. That moment when he put the flower ornament, and when he refused to sing, and that pouty face, oh Gukkieee, can I have you for my christmas present?!!!

I know, that Lee Hyun n Jung Do brings more depth n charisma, but we could give more credits to actors who's willing to try different ranges and did it wonderfully. Gukkie is of course, one of those actors. That is why I LOVE this guy so much. All of his character is FANTASTIC!
