Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

How did everyone’s dramas stack up this week? Any big duds to avoid, or hidden gems you’ve unearthed on dusty old hard drives that you care to share? The constant turnover in dramaland is so relentless that I can’t remember the last time I went back and watched something old, but I’m about to have a big W-shaped hole in my heart very soon, and I could use some recommendations to stave off the impending withdrawal. Friends help friends get over an addiction by getting them addicted to something new!* –girlfriday

Fantastic: I will never not find it funny when actors act like bad actors, and Joo Sang-wook does a pretty fantastic (hur) job at playing the vain foot-actor looking for any opportunity to look pretty. The cast is solid, and I particularly like the ladies’ friendships, so here’s to hoping the show maintains its cheerful vibe.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I find IU adorable in this, and her modernisms and fish-out-of-water foibles often make me laugh out loud. But I find myself increasingly annoyed when the show spends too much time away from Lee Jun-ki. When he’s front and center? I’m all eyes and ears. When he’s offscreen? First of all, why would you do that, and second of all, what is this nonsense? *throws remote*

Drinking Solo: Ha Suk-jin is so good at playing these teeth-grittingly annoying jerks, but I’m counting on this show to turn him around. Hopefully sooner than later! The characters all seem quirky and interesting, and I like that while the show has those mouth-watering eating and drinking scenes characteristic of the Let’s Eat franchise, the focus on the drinking at least cuts down on some of the gratuitous extended food porn. I can only take so much meokbang without breaking down into late-night drama-induced binges!

W–Two Worlds: I’ve been a little less engaged lately with all the twists upon twists, and anything with Dad just confuses me, but now that we’re so close to the end I do find myself wildly curious to know how things will work out. I’m mostly feeling confident that I’ll be satisfied with the ending, but bracing for that possibility that it may not. In which case, next week’s post oughtta be interesting.

Uncontrollably Fond: I cried a bunch in the last two episodes, and actually found the finale more satisfying than the rest of the show put together. If the rest of the drama had been about this kind of angst — heart-wrenching, but with a purpose — rather than the pointless, wheels-spinning-in-place kind, I would have liked this drama a lot more. It’s too bad the writer dragged out needless aggravation for so long and refused to give us hardly any time for narrative satisfaction, or couple moments, or interactions highlighting love over bitterness and anger. I’m glad for Kim Woo-bin that he acquitted himself well, and Suzy… is still really pretty.

Cinderella and the Four Knights: I had to wait SEVEN episodes to see Jung Il-woo smile? That is downright criminal.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Javabeans asked me this week whether I was exaggerating about this show making me cry. My answer: “No, I really cry! When I watch this show, I become twelve and I feel EVERYTHING.”

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: It still seems like Lee Jun-ki is in one drama and everyone else is in a different, less interesting drama. I would gift the king new golden earrings if he’d just ship the younger half of the princes abroad for a while, and free up some precious screentime.

Jealousy Incarnate: Only Jo Jung-seok could make a man’s battle to wear a bra so real, desperate, and hilarious. The pace of this show is slow, but I’m starting to like the family drama setup where eeeverybody is related to everyone else.

Drinking Solo: There’s a great low-key vibe to this show, and a focus on the everyday concerns of young people trying to figure out life. I’m especially drawn to the students’ stories and the world of Noryangjin, which I’ve always felt was portrayed in movies as some sort of purgatory between youth and adulthood.

Infinity Challenge: Among some of my favorite recurring specials on this variety show is Muhan Company, in which the cast does sketches about everyday office workers. This year they did a thriller mini-movie penned by Signal writer Kim Eun-hee, with cameos from Lee Je-hoon and Kim Hye-soo, along with supporting actors from Misaeng, and frequent guest G-Dragon. It wasn’t as good as the musical special they did last time, but Misaeng-meets-action-movie was a good meld, and the cameos were a fun treat.

The Good Wife: Mid-series update: This show continues to be solid on all counts of the drama trifecta. Yoon Kye-sang is amazing. Jeon Do-yeon knocks it out of the park. Yoo Ji-tae is such a good baddie (or is he just trying to be a good daddy?) that I question everything that comes out of his mouth.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Love, love, love. I’ll say it now and forever—Lee Jun-ki was born for sageuk. Pair that with a driving cello track to take me away, and… you have me. Sure this show has its flaws with the in-your-face close-ups contrasted with some shaky camera moments, and I wish that Su experienced more culture shock, yunno, given the fact that she’s in an entirely different era, but this scarlet heart will keep beating steadily for one prince for the rest of my days: Kang Haneul.

Jealousy Incarnate: Gong Hyo-jin is winning in virtually all of her projects, so it’s no surprise that I love her here too. There’s a lot of envy to go around in this show, but my eyes are laser-focused on Go Kyung-pyo, who is just all kinds of wonderful.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: This show has something special. Cute, breezy, and entertaining, each hour seems to zip by, and at the end of every episode, I’m left wondering: “Wait, it’s over already?” This series doesn’t quite have my heart, but I fully acknowledge that The Park Bo-gum Effect is a real thing. His acting is mesmerizing and poignantly subtle, and the look in his eyes commands my attention. But it seems I’ve caught Second Lead Syndrome real bad this cycle, because I absolutely adore Jinyoung.

W–Two Worlds: I still can’t believe this show is ending next week. If there’s something strange in my world, who am I gonna call? Park Su-bong! If there’s something weird in my webtoon and it don’t look good, who am I gonna call? Park Su-bong!

Monster: The nice thing about this show is that even when you don’t watch it for nearly two months, the plot is such that you can pick it back up no problem, without feeling like you need to refresh your memory of what has already happened in the previous thirty episodes. In the space of a week, I’ve managed to marathon my way to only being a few episodes behind, which might not exactly be something to be proud of, since I could have used that time to complete another entire drama. Probably the better decision would have been to abandon it back at Episode 30, but I’ve finally reached the point where Park Ki-woong has good hair and gets to rock his Shunji scary eyes, so I’m not backing down now.

Drinking Solo: Based on my mild disappointment of Let’s Eat 2, I had no expectations about the show except that Key was going to be a delight (and he totally is). But I’ve surprised myself by how much I enjoyed the first two episodes. It feels more like a Japanese drama to me since it’s rooted in a workplace slice-of-life ensemble rather than a quirky love triangle. I’m hooked for now and happy to cheer on Hana as she does her best to succeed.

hanshimi

Cinderella and the Four Knights: OMG. This is my ultimate guilty pleasure. It’s hitting all of my sweet spots and favorite tropes in the simplest, breeziest, most satisfying way — the independent and willful girl setting the spoiled rich boys on a path to goodness, the silent protector oppas, the rags-to-riches storyline, etc ad infinitum. I don’t need my brain for this — just my pure, little-girl heart. Some parts make me cringe in total embarrassment, and nothing that happens is surprising in the least, but the show is carried by surprisingly solid acting (Jung Il-woo and Park So-dam are wonderful, of course, but I’m surprised by Ahn Jae-hyun’s chemistry!!) and just a pure fun element that covers up the awkward directing and music.

Suki na Hito ga Iru Koto: Another jdorama! Another story with piles of pretty male characters! LOL. I probably shouldn’t say much about this, because (1) I’m only two episodes in, and (2) I’m actually trying to watch it in Japanese without subtitles for study purposes, so I’m sure I’m missing like 40 percent of each episode. But Kiritani Mirei is hilariously charming as always, as is the chemistry of her reunion with Yamazaki Kento. The food-centered plot is another trope fave of mine, and coupled with the sprinkled-in life observations, I’m having a lot of fun with it so far.

SailorJumun

Fantastic: Joo Sang-wook’s portrayal of an arrogant bastard never ceases to amaze me — he just gets so into it! I got a peek of that in Birth of a Beauty, but he really ups the cheese factor here. I feel like I should find him unbearably annoying like the heroine does, but he’s just so freaking funny to me. I don’t know how I feel about the cancer plot yet, but I’m getting good vibes from the drama so far, so I’ll stick with it for now.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Okay, I totally take back what I said about Moonlight being a cotton candy show, because, oh my gosh, it seriously takes my breath away. The delightful humor is still there (yay) but now the show’s starting to mess with my emotions and it ain’t afraid of holdin’ back. It’s the friendships that really get to me, and I love that with every relationship, there’s this sense of rich history behind everyone’s eyes. I look forward to interactions between the trio Yeong, Yoon-sung, and Byung-yeon the most, along with the main couple, of course.

W–Two Worlds: I don’t think I’ve ever screamed this loud at a cliffhanger before (apologies to my poor neighbors). You couldn’t scroll down just a little bit, Crazy Dog?! I’ve had enough stress with this show as is!

Laica

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Oh, the pretty. This show is so enjoyable to watch that even though it’s got every cliche of a crossdressing romance and then some, it still keeps me engaged. True, the heroine has been nursed back to health, rescued from danger, and saved from scolding and/or discovery so many times by the male leads that I’ve lost count. Still, the emotional beats feel honest, and all three leads have the acting chops and chemistry to pull off their often predictable and cheesy Significant Moments. I’ll admit I’m more forgiving when it’s Yeong doing the hero thing rather than Yoon-sung, and not just because of my biased love for Park Bo-gum. Yoon-sung is starting to show signs of typical second-lead pushy niceness, and I’m allergic to pushiness, no matter how well-intentioned. On the other hand, I just want our prince to find his happiness, preferably with a smack-talking former eunuch at his side. (Please don’t tell me history doesn’t treat him kindly. I have no knowledge of this particular historical figure, and no desire to be enlightened.)

Five Kids: I was a little late starting this show, but two-thirds of the way through its 54-episode run, I’m surprisingly still watching. I started it partly because it’s by the writer of the I Need Romance series and Discovery of Romance, and like those, it’s refreshingly lacking in hysterics or makjang twists, which is rare for this type of family drama. I love that despite some typical mother-in-law craziness, there are no real villains in this story; the conflict is caused by human failings like selfishness, which are so much more relatable than birth secrets or evil chaebols. Plus, Yeon-tae and Sang-min are too adorkably cute for words!

Twenty Again: I finally got a chance to watch this, and it’s every bit as warm, funny, and adorable as I’d heard. Choi Ji-woo and Lee Sang-yoon make an adorable second-chance couple, but what I ship the most in this show is Ha Nora and her true self, reuniting after twenty years of being estranged. Seeing her regain her confidence and her dreams feels like taking a deep breath after holding it for ages.

TeriYaki

Jealousy Incarnate: This show was just what I was hoping for once Wanted ended — lighter material and characters that pull me into the story. Pyo Na-ri is such an underdog, but I’m looking forward to seeing her luck change. Second lead syndrome is something I usually don’t experience, but I think this drama may be an exception. Add in some hilarious side characters and this show has me laughing out loud.

Cinderella and the Four Knights: This twist on a classic story, pairing a wide-eyed optimist with four impossibly stubborn men, brings new meaning to TGIF. I can’t wait to see how Bodyguard Lee reacts the morning after his embarrassing vomit attack. Park So-dam is perfect as the girl the Kang cousins can’t help but love. I just want to see Ha-won get her happy ending and for Hye-ji to get professional help for being a stalker.

Second to Last Love: This story of two mature, single people finding their way to one another in spite of their fears felt kind of slow-moving to me at first. What seemed to be a weakness of the show instead reinforces the cautious trajectory of the two main characters. Ji Jin-hee contrasts Go-shik’s uptight public persona with an increasingly flustered private one. The drama illustrates just how messy life can get. Now that I’m used to the slow pace, I’m onboard with this show.

Laurel Tree Tailors: A 50-episode drama is a big commitment and I can’t say I’ll stick with this one, but the cast is hard for me to resist. Unfortunately, there have been so many characters to introduce that after four episodes, the main characters are just barely crossing paths with one another. My main concern with this drama, other than the length, is the main female character played by Jo Yoon-hee. So far, it’s obvious she is not the sharpest pin in the pincushion. I fast-forward through most of her scenes and unless the character becomes more likable, I will probably drop this show.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: that's so right gummimochi, Bogum's magic is real. I keep falling for Bogummy by each episode. I'm also in love with the whole cast, they really have the synergy to make this drama outstanding. Director-nim is really smart at directing and executing it perfectly. The OSTs are also perfect omg. I'm looking forward to Jinyoung's song. Hope Moonlight will keep doing well ❤

W - Two Worlds: totally lost my interest :( not even bothered to watch the latest episodes. I will just skip those episodes by reading the recaps and watch the ending instead. Curious on how they will end it tbh

Ah, I'm so waiting for The K2!!! Changwook-ah, see you soon ?

@hanshimi: The first few episodes of Suki na Hito ga Iru Koto were fun, cliche, but fun, and I love the chemistry between Mirei Kiritani and Kento Yamazaki. And tanned Kento looks so hot for me. But now that it's nearing the end, and the (not-so-secret) birth secret came out, the story just came out dull. Not to mention the speed of every episode release or the preview are so slow I'm just slowly losing interest. If it was not for Kento, I would have dropped this J-drama, but I have so much affection for them from Heroine Shikkaku, now I'm just waiting for the conflict to arise from Chiaki's feelings and for both Misaki and Kanata to finally confront each other and date already. And they're driving me crazy with their 1 episode per week format.

@girlfriday: How can anyone not cry when the Crown Prince fought so hard to keep Ra-on by his side? I mean it doesn't make sense to do all these for a mere eunuch, but what's a man in love gotta do when the woman, err man, he loves is in danger? I cried a bucket when Ra-on told him to endure not for her sake but for his people. Bah!~ The tears are coming to me again. And I think they used the music quite well, I was so affected by the scene and the music.

Sacrlet Heart : I knew people doesn't like that Scarlet Heart to be compare to BBJX but I find the focus on Wang Wook is on point for ep 5, it just they don't have much weight about his role in this game of thrones or something, his story is always about his kind attired and his mansion (his person speach). So it feels a bit one way story that doesn't seems as important as Wo, it's important imo but there's no build up of Wook than just the other person for the love triangle.
But they probably follow the original ep story when it takes quite a while to focus on the 4th prince.

Moonlight : yup I like it, enough said

JI, W , Fantastic: I still haven't watch the week ep , got no time (I did watch ep 14 of W)

at least I can comment on DB (*ヽ´ω`)

People love Kang Haneul but I am fighting precisely at that point to like him. We know Wang So and his fate, we know his story has significance but Wang Wook, what's his significance. He is learned, mild mannered, dutiful son and husband but beyond that does this guy have anything to do in the ultimate fight for the throne?? He looks nice when he stares at IU, the chemistry is there and all but what exactly is his purpose beyond moping for love lost and love to be gained. 8th in C had ambitions, ambitions that ultimately came back to bite him. He had all the qualities of the K-8th yet had his own purpose in the politics of Qing Dynasty. He was actively involved in it, Wook doesn't feel like he has much to do so far where the really important things are concerned. Even crown prince is more interesting in his bid to keep his power secure amidst so much treachery all around. 10 and 14th are sure waste of screen time too, 14th was the kings favorite and a gifted warrior, 13th wasn't just writing and moping either. Ji Soo, he will get better projects to shine bright, this is just a miss for him.

I find the focus is on point because they seem to want it follow Bubujinxin storyline, give the emphasize in the 8th prince 1st,

but they didn't build anything for Wook so it feels out of place despite being a good episode

Don't you think it's a little too early to declare the 8th Prince insignificant to the plot? Even the heroine, it could be argued that she hasn't found a purposes in the plot. Prince Wang So just got himself back to the palace. He just got permission to stay in the palace but the question could be asked, "then what? ".
He has to navigate his way through the palace, settle in and get along with his brothers. But we are interested because we know he becomes great in history,so were watching his journey.
Prince Wang Wook's wife just died, so were curious to see his next step. Other people have pointed that his not all he seems and may be hiding or suppressing an evil streak. Will he get ambitious? Will he become a major obstacle in So's way to the throne?
If we're going to point out who is significant now in moving plots forward and causing drama, then the most significant characters should be Evil Queen SMS, the 3rd Prince evil eyeliner, the king and that suspicious astronomer.
The drama is still establishing players so I think we should hold of writing off characters a bit.
In the same vein, have some comic relief at 13th Prince face in that top pic lol.

uncontrollably fond- finally it ended. i think my love for kim woo-bin really faded with this drama. i was all over him after heirs, but with each subsequent project he was never quite as charismatic as before. for this project, though, i really blame the writer more than anyone else.

cinderella and the four knights- my guilty pleasure. actually, this is the show i look forward to most out of the lot. *ducks head in shame* i can't help it! super predictable, dated plot but it's got a charming cast in jung il-woo, park so-dam, and particularly ahn jae-hyun. shell-shocked ahn (from being "dumped" by park) was hilarious. i think it's well executed enough—it's unapologetic in its genre. it's not trying to be more serious or more than what it is.

W- i guess i can feel things winding down, though i'm not really sure when the climax occurred. i think things got a bit too much after the reset—which i wouldn't have minded, had there been sufficient answers. but the plot just seemed to barrel on without any, which kind of took the edge off my enthusiasm for the show. if there isn't any base logic for me to grip onto like a handrail, i can't be as into it. also, as the show wears on, i'm not feeling han hyo-joo. emotionally she's not as convincing as lee jong-seok. she's serviceable and she's a stable actress, i'll say that much for her. but you still feel something wanting.

i'm also pretty disappointed by how few scenes lee tae-hwan has. i was soooo all over his leggy good looks in come back mister and he was the main draw to W for me personally, though i eventually got sucked into the story for itself. but i've always kept an eye out for him, and he's had so little to do!

also watching moonlight drawn by clouds, jealousy incarnate, and fantastic. i don't like fantastic that much, but joo sang-wook does a bang up job as faking bad acting. only HE could do it the way he does it!

but currently i'm re-watching an old drama that i loved dearly during its original run, though i never saw it again after that first time. save the last dance for me, with jisung and eugene. i saw it in high school, and somehow it's always stuck with me. my mom bought the CD soundtrack, which is one of my favorite OSTs ever. so the drama was always fairly fresh in my memories that way, because i listened to it quite regularly over the years. last week it came on while i was driving, and i was seized with a sudden resolve to re-watch the whole thing.

i'm only up to episode 8, but the verdict: i still love it. it's got plenty of makjang elements: chaebols, amnesia, car accidents, love triangles. so the plot is dated and not at all up to modern tastes, but it can't be denied that jisung and eugene bring such a warmth to it all, though maybe i love it for purely nostalgic reasons. it even makes me slightly emotional, remembering the days when i'd watched this, over 10 years ago now. dunno why it took me so long to find it again. it's...

oh, i hope you like it! i've been having a lot of fun watching it again—so much so that i've been putting the current dramas a bit on the backburner. i remember having had such a crush on jisung after watching save the last dance for me, my high school self thought he was so impossibly dreamy! hehe

an interesting note: the girl who played the second female lead (lee bo-young) is now married to him, and also an amazing actress.

Still in a bit of a withdrawal from PU38 and AoY.

Finally finished BIOG and while towards the end, the writer started to take too many "lazy" shortcuts and seemed to have forgotten about certain things, overall was a pretty fun/entertaining watch.

In no small part due to Kim So-hyun who was awesome and carried the show.

Taec wasn't bad, while he didn't have the heavy work-load playing the "straight" character to KSH's, he was able to emote some and had an easy charm (only a couple of moments - such as when he had to have that intense look/stare that I got flashbacks of Song Seung-hyun in "Dr. Jin.")

With PU38 and AoY having finished their runs, had the time to check out Han Jung-hoon's previous OCN series, "Bad Guys" and I kicked myself for having missed it when it aired.

Don't know how I missed that - since am usually up on what are considered the well-written dramas and it even starred Kim Sang-joong, his film work I have enjoyed (1st time seeing him in a drama and hence, being able to get deeper into a character and he absolutely killed it).

Saw another familiar face in Jo Dong-hyuk (had 1st seen him in "Yaksha"), tho looking totally different in a slim cut suit and close cropped hair.

How is this guy not a bigger star in Korea (or across East Asia)? JDH not only has the looks (can't get more chiseled than that face), but can back his matinee idol looks w/ acting ability.

There were some parts towards the end where I felt certain things didn't quite ring true (but played up the dramatic angle), but another very well written script by
HJH.

More so than good acting, I'm impressed if a writer can come up with more than 1 well-written drama - as that is so difficult to do.

Too bad HJH and Park Yeon-seon (AoY) scribed in relative obscurity compared to some other writers who are little better than hacks in my book (or as I had stated before, the writer's equivalent to Michael Bay).

Not sure what I'm going to watch next.

Started "Drinking Solo" but none of the characters appeal to me (don't have any of the charm or humor of the characters in the LE series, esp. the supporting characters in the 1st one), so not sure if I'm going to stick w/ it.

Now, that it's CFB season, along w/ the NFL, don't have the time or patience for shows which don't have at least above-avg. writing/characters.

Like the cast of "Jealousy Incarnate" - so may give that a try (seems to have improved over recent eps) and probably will start on one of PYS's other dramas.

I know, why isn't Jo Dong-hyuk a bigger star? He is so good looking, especially in Yaksha. He lost a bit too much weight in Bad Guys for my taste but, still, he is gorgeous and a really good actor. The last thing I saw him in was something called Investigator Alice which is so bizarre it defies description. And also aw-ful! But I bravely took one for Team Jo Dong-hyuk and kept watching to the bitter end. It's a shame he has to do dreck such as this rather than bigger, more high profile roles.

Someone mentioned Yaksha on an open thread recently and I decided to re-watch it. I'm now just finished episode 6 and am pleasantly surprised how well it holds up. It's not just brutal violence but has a lot of emotion and heart. Also it's refreshingly adult. SPOILER: The scene where the hero's brother spends the night with a gisaeng and they talk about their respective pasts is very moving. The gisaeng is seduced into the bed of an old man at the age of 12 when he offers her those delicious looking cookies shaped like flowers. And the brother whose first taste of the same cookies leads him to the dark place he inhabits now when he vows to live a life where he can eat them every day.

Yeah, while "Yaksha" had stylized, graphic violence and some adult content, thought it had more "heart" than many other sageuks.

Jeon Hye-bin was pretty good in it as well (think that may be where she started to get noticed for being an actress).

Speaking of Hye-Ji...anyone else think that if she were part of W, she would have disappeared completely after Hyun-min rejected her first time? I mean how boring. 100% of the character's thoughts are about Hyun min. Eating, breathing, walking, talking to other people, sewing...probably pooping....all about Hyun-min.
And i will call it now, their backstory will be how the brother told Hyun-min to stay away from his sister before he passed away so that's why Hyun-min cant be with her.

I am so in denial about W losing steam, but I have to admit that there were more flaws to be found in the later episodes. Every criticism I've read here is true. The romance got drifted into angst land, and we have to read between the lines, or imagine off the camera, to feel the love because there are just so many oh shit events happening instead. The directing (or is it editing? Or the script? Pardon my lack of show inner working) started ruining the story, as everything got told in a flashback and all out of order. I want to see our characters deal with things in real time, not after the fact, dammit. It surely would have been better pre-produced, eh?

I still love it though and I look forward to our final W-day. Not having seen other shows by the same writer before, W is the first show to rock my kdrama world! I'm sure the last hour will zip by in no time just the same...

I don't even want to start counting how many hours I've spent watching dramas the past week. In the last WWW post I was 2weeks behind on most dramas and not only have I caught up but also am up to date with all the new shows/episodes from this week (except for some of the weekend shows). If only I were half as dedicated to other things as well...

Moon Lovers: It's Moonday already, mansae! \^o^/
Ep.1-5. The award for the worst mother in dramaland goes to.....Queen SMS. We've seen evil stepmothers and MIL from hell tons of times but a mother who treats her biological son like that... I think that's a first. Let's hope she'll at least treat her stepdaughter better in JI.
KHN, stop looking at her like that, you're gonna get your heart broken, honey. ?
The ratings are disastrous but I hope dramas like BM, UF and now ML make production companies realize that in order to be able to compete in the ratings you have to get your shit together from the first episode! Seriously sometimes I wonder if there are really professional drama makers behind the production when I watch messy starts.
And I know this PD loves his extreme close up shots which already irritated me in IOIL but since that was a modern drama I could accept it as creative direction but it's just freaking weird in a sageuk and I find myself pulling back as if I can get out of the actors' faces. Lol

MDBC: Ep.3-6. Ok, I expected this to be cute but never thought it'd make me feel so. damn. much. Our OTP oozes so much charisma and chemistry it's absolutely insane. PBG...sigh, I really feel like a pervy noona for swooning so much but argh how could I not melt into a puddle of goo when he says stuff like "It is my wish to make your wish come true." in the most sincere manner possible. ?
And he's just the prince of micro expressions, sharing the spot with RJY. I believe that even if they shall ever get botox, their faces would still be more expressive than a lot of other actors/actresses who are natural. ?

Drinking Solo: Enjoyed the first two episodes. It feels different enough from the Let's Eat series but didn't lose its deeper meaning behind its apparently mundane topic. And at least the drinking here isn't anywhere as seducing as the food porn from the other series (although the little food that's in the show still makes my mouth water).
And I look forward to who Jin-woong's going to impersonate this week, I suspect KSH lol.

W: 2 days until the final, the wait is still pure torture. The genius at MBC that had the glorious idea to only show one episode during the Olympics should receive a personal encounter with Assemblyman Han. ?
Give me my happy OTP ending, show. ?

Jealousy Incarnate: Ep.1-6. The start was all over the place but getting better and better with each episode and by ep.6 I basically died laughing throughout the whole hour. This is definitely not your typical rom-com and I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. It deals with some pretty heavy topics in a very quirky way which makes you go WTF a lot and also might confuse you at times about your own reaction (like I shouldn't be laughing but omg, I can't help it and I know there's a spot for me in hell already ?).
Btw I've only seen Lee Sung-jae in MOTW and man was there one sexy ajusshi hiding underneath all that Joseon garb. ?

C4K: aka Cinderella and the flashback knights ?
Ep.5-10, watched most of it while working out. Ain't no better distraction than some flower boys and a nonsensical cheesy plot while doing HIIT, strength training etc kekeke. But beware of those not so subtle musical cues, they may cause you wanting to throw your dumbbells at the screen. Though I should rather throw them at the writer and music director I guess, and who knows maybe I'll hit that angelic choir in passing as well. ?
Seriously I never expected a great plot, hell not even mediocre but what's happening these recent episodes is ridiculous.
Ep.7-8 hey, let's switch the cousins' personalities. Did Ha-won get Lee Young-oh do a brain transplantation? Should've rather put some personality into Hye-ji and acting chops into the actress instead, sorry not sorry.
Ep.9-10 hey, let's put the focus on the second female lead (hmm...where have I seen that before...it was something cheesy from early 2016 ?) and make the female lead look as clingy as possible for good measure. Funnily enough if this wasn't pre-produced I bet HJ would've disappeared long time ago.
And I'm totally gonna steal the W tablet and pull Smexytary Lee into my world (what, that's not how it works? Pah, we shall see on Wednesday ?).
On another note, is it just me or does Lee Jung-shin (Seo-woo) remind anyone of a younger version of Park Hae-jin here?

Fantastic: Ep.1-2, slowly starting to get into this. Can't believe I've never seen the leads in anything before despite them being kdrama veterans. Looking forward to see Ji Soo.

Second To Last Love: Ep. 6. JJH dancing with a squirrel hat on his head is probably the best thing I've seen since LWG and JS's cheerleading in SGG. ?

Finished

The Good Wife: Sigh, what words to use to describe this show...smart, mature, sophisticated, engaging, provocative, and all shades of gray. ? I'd put it into a category with shows like Secret Love Affair and Heard It Through The Grapevine.

Doctors: Bye bye you scapegoat of a lot of DB readers. ?
Wished it was only 16 episodes (but with those ratings it would've been extended anyway) and I can't help but imagine how great this could've been if Noo Hee-kyung were writing this. Overall I enjoyed the show because of the mature relationship, character developments and mainly the cast and its great chemistry. But KRW, you better pick something with more meat to it next time!

BIOG: Was quite solid from beginning to end and I enjoyed it most of its run. Thank goodness they didn't waste YDJ's cameo (that hair color though).

Phew, that was a lot to cover. ?

The ratings are disastrous but I hope dramas like BM, UF and now ML make production companies realize that in order to be able to compete in the ratings you have to get your shit together from the first episode!

I'm praying they actually listen to this - all three of those dramas had weak first episodes, and UF only made it to first place that week because the competition was worse. No network can afford to take their competition for granted though, as KBS and now SBS found out.

So, aside from the current shows I'm enjoying right now, I've committed myself to Sageuk binge-watching for the whole school break next month (who needs social life right??). I've already started with Empress Ki and already at episode 17 and Six Flying Dragons at episode 9. Planning to watch Tree With Deep Roots after SFD. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Now watching:

W: I spent the whole week catching up and finally got to the latest episode. As mentioned previously, my interest in this show has dwindled, so I'm actually glad that it's ending - it means I have time to start on Second To Last Love finally.

Jealousy Incarnate: I spent the whole day yesterday marathoning ep 1-6 and it seems great so far! Gong Hyo Jin never fails me. Still confused with the constant flashbacks and worried if this show even has enough material for 24 episodes, but I'll be sticking with it till the end. (I'm actually happy to see Lee Sung Jae again, was Mirror Of The Witch that long ago?)

C4K I watched till ep 7 and from ep 8 onwards, I found it boring and so dropped it...

No other show is grabbing my attention as W did, so I have no idea what I will do after W

Lee jong suk really made me fall for KC

Lol, I seem to be in the minority in that I enjoy Scarlet Heart as a whole. Even though he's utterly fantastic, I don't want them to focus mostly on Junki, because I absolutely love episodes like Episode 5 where you can have an entire, beautifully done arc of an unpromoted character like Lady Hae. I wouldn't want to give up those moments. She was the catalyst for all action in 5 (and the younger princes barely appeared at all as well, so I don't think that their presence is a complaint that can really be made about the episode- and I thought Jisoo was fantastic in 4), and every character who had screen-time was in relation to her in a way. I appreciate the drama so much more for giving us these moments.

Loving Moonlight. Earlier I was just feeling friendly chemistry between PBG and KYJ but now they're really bringing their A+ romance and angst game and I love it <3 I've been hoping some drama dealing with this premise legitimately tackles sexual confusion after Coffee Prince, so please let it be this one. Also, GOD BYEONG YEON INDEED. I can't get myself interested in the machinations of most characters or anything that is not PBG, KYJ, and KDY interacting with each other. (Except the princess, I like her!)

JEALOUSY INCARNATE IS UTTERLY FANTASTIC. PLEASE REMAIN THIS GREAT THROUGHOUT YOUR RUN, THANK YOU.

re: Scarlet Heart - exactly, I really liked episode 5 for fleshing out Lady Hae (and Su's relationship with her), it was a well-done episode even with the lack of LJK. And what we did get of him was perfectly designed to make us want more.

About the younger princes, I don't mind them as long as they come minus Baekhyun (yes, I know he's negligible but his acting is seriously awk and he's only bearable when IU is there to elevate the scene by making stank face at his attempts to woo her). Ji-soo was actually good once they let him be one-on-one with Lee Jun-ki, we finally got the sense there was more than an annoying contrived cute puppy under there.

Moonlight is so cute, and getting so good, that Park Bo-gum effect is real.

I am as invested in W as ever. I thought my love was waning over the past few episodes, especially because I read recaps for episodes 14 and 15 before watching them, but as soon as I'd seen the two episodes, I knew that it still works, everything still hangs together, I still love it more than any other drama (including completed dramas). This drama made me a fan of Lee Jong-seok. I have no idea what I'll do with my life when it's over.

Scarlet Heart: I didn't know any of the actors specifically before watching this. I just saw the promotion pictures and was slightly amused by the sheer number of guys in it but it made me a bit less interested, cause I usually don't go for the Harem genre, reversed of not. Still, time traveling and fish-out-of-water experiences I do really like so I was still anticipating this one. I watched it and I like it, at around episode 3 or 4 I started to like it even more. I have no problem with the music, I didn't notice it either way, neither as good nor as bad. I did notice the close ups though but other then amusing me slightly sometimes, they don't really take me out of the experience.

Moonlight drawn by clouds: Gender bender is always something where I have turn my logic off and sometimes like in Sungkyunkwan Scandal it ends up bothering me. Although the female lead here surely doesn't pass as a guy either I still have a much easier time to buy what's happening. I like every character here for what they are, PBG's facial expressions are very entertaining to watch. The music is great, the dance was beautiful and although last episode was one of my least favorite so far, I am still looking forward for this one the most of all the currently airing ones.

Uncontrollably fond: I watched until episode 12 (skipping boring parts) and then just read the recaps until 18, then watched the last two completely again. My conclusion: I like it more when a drama is boring in the middle with a nice ending then being good and having a bad ending. The end is important and I really thought the last 2 episodes made this show worth the watch. ( I didn't like Woo bin before watching this, now I like him a lot more. Also no problem at all with Suzy, I liked her through all the episodes I saw.)

W: I really liked the first 4 episodes. I was very excited for those, more then for other shows but episode 5 was a bummer and since then there were good parts and not as good parts for me. Not a show that I click on in excitement but when I do click on it, then the show manages to keep me interested for the run of the episode. After which, I forget it. I am a bit more excited though about how the last episode will be, with a feeling of relieve that it will be soon over. My conclusion for this one: I really like Su bong, he is my spirit animal. Han hyo joo is a great actress, I had seen her before in movies and always liked her but never truly took notice until now. The other actors are really good too and although I will not become a fangirl of his any time soon, this drama also showed me that I can watch a project with Lee Jung Suk
until the end, which previously I never ended up doing (dropped Pinocchio, I hear your voice, Doctor stranger, School 13)

Cinderella and the four knights: Here is a weird example of a show that is very engaging but only because it's so much fun to rant about. First 4 episodes were just fun&light, even with all the tropes, but now I watch it out of the same curiosity with which you might stare at an accident while driving by. I don't like what the show did with the characters that I did like at the beginning and the characters that I didn't like from the start, have not been able to persuade me to change my sentiment. I still like Seo Woo and the Secretary but I am almost expecting that the show will find a way to mess with those 2 as well.

Ah, Jealousy Incarnate is fun, reminds me of It's oaky, that's love. I am rooting for the male lead.
Drinking solo is also fun, like Let's eat, I am not rooting for the male lead yet. (like his younger brother >.<)
Second to last love: Dropped at episode 9, just not my cup of tea.
Fantastic: Maybe because I have just finished UF and before that also Scent of a woman but I have enough of the fatal disease plot for a while. I like the doctor the most and second Ji soo and that girl's little side story.
Our gab soon: He is an ass, I liked the actor in thumping spike, still like him but I better stop watching this until his character makes some huge development otherwise I might project my dislike of the character onto the actor.

So my addiction is tapering down now....

So UF ended, (satisfied with it as a whole, at least), W ending this week! OMO! Su-Bong Special Please!

So far just staying loyally with the MDBC and MLSHG.

Im not too committed with C4K, Im just waiting for the OSTs. I dunno whats wrong, I'm not really feeling this series right now. Which is weird because I really do like the two male leads.

I don't think I can watch Fantastic for now, I mean, another terminal illness? I need a break, man. As where Breast Cancers are concerned.... leaning more towards JI, but only because I still have second lead syndrome at the moment, and the family dynamics are indeed interesting.

I've been filling the spaces of my days (yes, I still have a lot of free time) watching WGM's latest season because I love Jota and Jin Kyung's active lifestyle, they're always doing something interesting, outdoors-y stuff, and the healthy cooking is so inspiring. And also watching coz Eric Nam's Cant Help myself and Into You is on repeat on my spotify. LOL.

Maybe Im just holding off all my energy until K2 arrives. Hee.

I am watching Drinking Solo and Fantasy currently.

Drinking Solo: because I love Let's Eat series, I am giving it a try. Key is (un)surprisingly better than I expected. I guess, his musical experience paid off (although of course drama is different from musical). But I'm liking the trio so far. I also like how they delve into office politics, and since I am also an aspiring lecturer, Hana's concerns hit home. So far, I'm liking how they focus on the how and why people like drinking alone (though Let's Eat started off like that too).

I think so far DS has been doing what I hope they did for Let's Eat series. They started off good, but then focus too much on the love line between Dae Young and the two female leads (respectively in each season) and the useless who-is-the-murderer mystery, and it just moved it away from the "Let's Eat" theme. They're still two of my fave anyway.

Fantastic: because I miss seeing Park Si Yeon (I like her in the beginning of her Family Outing days with Park Hae Jin -- LOL). The two leads are great, the male lead is funny as bad actor. And Kim Tae Hoon.

I watched Muhan Company as well (because it's from Misaeng and Signal director and writer). And then I teared up a bit because Jung Hyun Don made a cameo in the hospital. His dialogue is like what the show and members want to tell him. TT

Still contemplating whether or not to watch Jealously Incarnate. I like Go Kyung Po and Go Hyo Jin, but Idk.

Reading all the comments on Moon Lovers, I am kind of worried for the drama again.

I didn't go into this expecting an exact replica of the C JJBX. I am not familiar with Goryeo history or any Korean history for that matter. I thought the writer chose this particular period because it was the closest fit to the Kangxi-Yongzheng reign. What I expect from the drama is a good mix of political strife, struggle for the throne and a modern day girl thrown into the thick of it all, knowing well enough how history will turn out and attempting to change the course of it.

To hear Lee Jun Ki say that Wang So had no purpose until he met Hae Soo, raises alarm bells. As some pointed out, Wang Wook has not exhibited any kind of political ambitions as the 8th Prince either. Are they going to make this into primarily a romance drama with history as a backdrop?

I feel as if they could have set all these characters in a modern times and we'll scarcely notice any difference!

Hae Soo can be any Candy girl thrown into a household full of chaebol sons. Not unlike Cinderella and The Four Knights.

Wang So is the son who's ostracized and fostered out since young because he brought bad luck. So he grows up into this emo king who sports messy hair and black heavy metal fashion.

Wang Wook is the most mature of the brothers and Mr Nice Guy while Queen Bitch is the evil Stepmother of Wang So always scheming with evil step brother Wang Yo. Astronomer guy is ever supportive butler.

I am probably just freaking myself out. Let's hope I am totally wrong.

Love your comment and description of Wang So as emo king with heavy metal fashion, lol.
Yes, it feels like unlike Chinese version here poor 4th Prince would have never made it if Hae Soo didn't appear shouting "Fighting' and high-fiving people and suddenly giving him idea that he can be the king, well, someone taught him fight skills and stuff, so probably someone else had plans for Wang So to be more than just an outcast emo prince and I agree, I had a feeling that there would be no attempt from the 8th to get the throne, he probably will be the one helping Wang So to get the throne and will let him to have a woman.
I also think they changed the main idea, in Chinses the idea was she knew the history and wanted to go against it but failed, in Korean version Hae Soo not sure who became the King but turns out it was her who made a history.

Eh? Lee Jun-ki really said that about Wang So? That's just sad. I don't like characters like this if that is true. Perhaps once the political power play starts, his character might fill out better and be less emo.

LOL at heavy metal fashion, that is so true.

C-BBJX's 4th prince also didn't have ambitions for the throne initially until ..... Anyway, the Goryeo history & succession is different from Chinese history, so my guess is that the political strife and struggle for the throne will be played out differently including timing-wise. So, let's just wait and see.

BTW 4th prince is no longer emo, and has been pretty cool for the most of week 2 already. And Haesu's "Fighting" was for 14th, and no, this didn't suddenly give 4th the idea that he can be king. And as someone said earlier, isn't it too early to make assumptions about 8th's ambitions?

Re the C-version, what Nutini thought happened is not correct.

I beg to differ. When RX landed in Qing dynasty the princes were already split up in different camps eyeing the throne and biding their time to take actions. 4th was just low-key hiding his true intentions, but his every action screamed strategy. 8th read him very well, being a strategic and ambitious man himself.

The accident just pushed his ambition and determination to another notch. He, like 8th, wasn't just strolling around in the palace aimlessly and purposelessly :). Just saying.

@javabeans In Chinese version 4th Prince rarely appeared for around 10-15 episodes, so I think at least in this sense they are following the original.

I am watching Five Children cause I am currently obssessed with Sunghoon after watching hin in Cool Kiz on the Block Swimming special, he looks like a serious guy in real life, so I was surprised his role in 5 Children is a complete pabo, so cute, drama is nice tho it has 50 eps , I watched What happens to my family, do can finish this one too probably, it is interesting to see Sunghoon in comedic role, cause he fits cool roles and probably had them before, but I think he's cute in this one, btw, he's over 30 already, i wonder if he served in the army already

I really hope ML gets high ratings this week! I don't think the plot is unique or anything and it doesn't give me the kick or thrill I get whenever I watch a good drama, but it is watchable. It is executed well too which is very important, and it has LJK. I want drama to get high ratings solely for LJK because his recent dramas got low ratings too. If you love an actor you want their projects to do well even if there are flaws.
Now, I am waiting for "K2"! My Wookie is back. He expression looks so lethal in the latest posters! Yoon-Ah and JCW are definitely one of the hottest couple of the year.

Dropped Cinderella4Knights as it felt elementary school level...just kind of dumb. Gave up on Uncontrollably Fond at ep 14 and probably should have quit about ten episodes before.

Viki finally has Moonlight Drawn By Clouds ep 1 free today!
Others I'm watching are 2nd to Last Love, The Flower In Prison, Fantastic, W, and Moon Lovers.

BTW, first time in a very long time that Dramabeans page isn't giving me severe grief having to load, reload, reload, reload, and finally just give up. Hope it is finally fixed.

How did everyone’s dramas stack up this week? Any big duds to avoid, or hidden gems you’ve unearthed on dusty old hard drives that you care to share?

Oh Girlfriday. I'm so glad you asked this. Some dramas just have a special place in our hearts. For a variety of reasons...it could be your very 1st kdrama; watching was fun and heartily entertaining from beginning till the end; offered cotton candy/happy/feel good romance...pure escapism from daily routines or reality; delivered the feels whether from the onscreen chemistry, the acting, memorable characters and OST's, good writing and narrative flow; it might have provided tremendous joy; or it was an uplifting drama for one's spirit during a season of sorrow, trials, tribulations, health concerns/illness, overcoming/surviving a stressful job, weary and heavy-laden burdens, etc.

The dramas airing live now - Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, W–Two Worlds, Jealousy Incarnate, & Uncontrollably Fond - I put on hold this past week. I went back and watched something old - but not really old though since its just 4 years old.

I marathoned Faith (aka The Great Doctor), a drama that's not perfect but it holds a special place in my heart. Fond memories of anticipation watching it live back in 2012. A wonderful message about trust, courage, preparation, confidence, and victory. An inspirational reminder that though my sword may be heavy to "Carry On" and have Faith.
