Beans of Wisdom: Sandwich love affair

This week in Beans of Wisdom…

Klurker writes in “Cinderella and the Four Knights: Episode 13” comment #2:

This drama should’ve been called “Brooding Incarnate” or “Oh My Brooding Ghost”. First, the brooding ghost possessed Ji woon, then Hye ji, then Hyun min, and now in the latter episodes, Bodyguard Lee. Seo woo has always been partially brooding, while our dear Cinderella couldn’t be possessed by the ghost for long.

PBY replies:

If we’re thinking about alternative titles, may I tentatively suggest “Cinderella and the Four Riders of the Apocalypse: Depression, Rebellion, Entitlement, Greed”?

Nemi:

“And I looked and beheld a luxury car, and his name that rode within was Chaebol, and Hell followed with him.”

Back to Klurker:

The first seal was opened, and behold, the Tie of Doom was revealed.

In “Cinderella and the Four Knights: Episode 14” comment #14, paramount notes:

Honestly, for a character that has been presented as “honorable” quite a few times, Grandpa Kang seriously sucks.
It just baffles me that even after seeing the effects of separating his son & Ji-Woon’s mom had on his family… he would make literally the exact same decision with Ji-Woon & Ha-Won?! Talk about not learning from your mistakes…

JuicyFeet replies:

Where did cool grandpa go? DID COOL GRANDPA DIE WITH HIS LIVER?!

fab:

Cool grand’s soul got abducted by the same culprits who got to cool Hyunmin. RIP cool peeps.

This week, there is a lot of discussion on the adultery theme in kdramas. Lin writes in “On the Way to the Airport: Episode 2” (#28.1):

This reminds me of Brooklyn 99 where the guys goes on about the daddy issues and all the justified reason they had for their crime. The detective replies

“Cool motive, still murder ”

That’s how I feel. If these two people want to have an affair (or want the married OTP together) they (and the drama which may all too easily villainfy the characters) will find justifications for it (he’s a bad father, a cheater, doesn’t respect her. She was a cold mother, killed her daughter, emotionally closed off).

I know life and love (falling in and out) aren’t black and white. However we make choices. You can separate, divorce, talk to your spouse about your changed feelings and reach a decision of staying or leaving, trying to work it out or this is the end. Cheating and adultery doesn’t have to happen and doesn’t happen unless on chooses or allows it to. So I’m with you on your sentiment about how anything can be justifies. As much as I’m enjoying the drama, all the characters, their stories, and things unfolding. If adultery does take place, cool motive, still adultery.

Bunny replies down the thread:

Just want to point out few things:

1. It was said that the theme is not adultery. Try to see it in different light will help though. It can be about friendship. We dont know it yet, since we’re only on ep.2!

2. No adultery has taken place. The mood, the music, the vibes are there. But take those away, it’s just two humans finding friends in each other.

3. Is your soulmate your partner? In many cases, it is not. Funny but true. Plus, even if you were started off your relationship as soulmates and then couple, you still need to keep it alive for it to keep it that way, or you grow apart and become strangers again. This show shows this well. It motivates couples to be better, with or without the presence of other people.

4. Movie is not textbook or the bible. Its mission is to capture life. Without this drama, people commit adultery, people make friends, people having arguments with their spouses, people dealing with time, etc. Life goes on. The drama merely highlight certain aspect of life. For me, it does it tremendously well.

5. Btw, since we’re talking about adultery, I just need to say this: when people commit adultery, they dont really actually plan to do it on the first place. They have their war inside their mind before anything really takes place. Adultery is just one of the war’s outcome. I dont condone adultery, but I understand why it happened.I dunno if Soo Ah or Do Woo is going that way, but I am happy that they found someone that understands them when their spouse is frankly speaking quite dysfunctional. I can imagine what kind of hell they’re in, when their spouse is practically not present. I hope each find courage to speak their mind and communicate with their spouse like two adults and see if the house can be fixed.

In “Open Thread #467” comment #3.1.2, Michykdrama writes:

Regarding marriage and soul mates, I tend to take a much more pragmatic view of it. I don’t believe there is any 2 people who will be 100% compatible with each other. Marriage isn’t about finding the perfect one, it is about working hard at staying together with the one you have decided too.
Of course this isn’t to say that divorce isn’t ever warranted but I strongly feel that if people go into marriage expecting sunshine and rainbows always, then they are in for a big disappointment. It does take 2 to tango though so both parties have to be willing to work hard at it.
I read this somewhere and it resonated a lot with me when my husband and I were going through a tough patch- (I’m paraphrasing from memory) even if your partner is 90% compatible with you, there is still that 10% that we will wish could be different. And we will always meet someone else who seems to fulfil that 10% by having traits that our partner does not. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that the new person is more compatible with us, it’s just that we see it as such. In other words, the grass always seems greener.
I havent watched OTWTTA but I just wanted to offer this point of view. ?

In last week’s “Beans of Wisdom: What’s in a name?” commenters continued the conversation on age gaps. Sayna’s addresses the two beanies featured in last week’s Beans of Wisdom. In comment #4, she writes:

As long as you don’t harm others, really don’t see the point of dooming anyone relationships based on shallow criteria like a number, gender or other, and it used to be race too. I don’t have parents with a large age difference. But I have my own form of relationship where I’ve read comments here deeming it “exotic” or taboo or whatnot. So I won’t share, but let’s just say it’s unusual. So I can relate.

I don’t get why something uncommon should be judged, or make others uncomfortable. As far as I know, even common relationships have a tremendously significant rate of failure. So what makes them better by default? Just because they don’t ascribe to your idea of what a matched pair should be like?

There used to be a time when people were told not to mate with others from different colors of skin. In many countries, you get judged for it even now. I know for a fact in Asia, you still get pressure to marry someone from your own country/ethnicity, and being Asian isn’t enough.

That’s just one example. There’s so many examples of forbidden relationships in the past. Nobles/commoners. Some of those taboos have been broken, but it’s sad to see others still get judged by criterion that are so shallow they shouldn’t matter. Relationships are complex. Their success and failures depends on many criterion at once.

Just want to tell both of you that I’ve seen comments in here talking about age difference as a minus in their mind. Never replied back. But seeing that you’ve both been hurt personally by it, I’ll tell you here that I giving you moral support. I know how it feels.

Sung Joon also adds in comment #6.1.1:

I tend to lurk, but I had to comment.

“about a twenty year difference between your own eighteen year old daughter (or son) marrying someone who’s close to forty”

I think that’s the whole point of the discussion we’re having. The information you gave is just numbers. 18. 40. 20.

The problem here is that people tend to see those numbers, and write whole stories about it without even being told more, or know the people behind those numbers. As someone discussed below, people’s emotional maturity differ vastly even when they’re the same age.

Yes, it won’t work because difference in generation, maturity, and more in some cases. It’s not a match for many because of various and complex personality reasons where age factors in. But numbers alone should not give those ideas.

Sure, that 18 & 30+ could not fit because there is a generational and maturity gap. The problem here is that should not be assumed automatically. People are all unique and stereotyping the compatibility of two people because of their age shouldn’t happen.

Like all relationship, difference in political views, values, tastes, hobbies, etc could affect a relationship. Those can, but are not necessarily be affected by age, religion, culture, background, etc. But like race and religion and background should not be considered by default as incompatible like it used to be in the past, the point here is age alone is not a good factor enough.

And Haley’s bit in #15:

I think the problem with age gap is that it’s human nature to be a bit limited in your thoughts by your own standards or limitations. It’s where lots of prejudices stem from.

If u think about it, it’s such a narrow way to view the world though. Cuz people, and the world itself are really diverse. What doesn’t work for some really work for others. But people tend to think that what doesn’t work for them doesn’t work for others either.

I see plenty of people thinking if you’re young, you can’t know much about love. But just like there are people whose intelligence will never be much their whole life, and others who are already geniuses when young. Or people who are overweight and people who are naturally, even over-humanly athletic. There are people whose maturity reaches them early regarding social skills, or compassion, or love. People develop differently from each other. Some people still don’t understand much about relationship all their lives, some people find love early. Some people have never even have a girlfriend/boyfriend past their primes, and some lived a happy marriage life early. It’s rather narrowing to think that a specific person can’t know or understand what love is because they’re young in age. There could be other reasons to object, such as immaturity in character. But youth itself does not preclude understanding about love, or the ability to love. Demanding that they delay it without understanding their level of feelings is unfair. You never know with life. Some people die really young. Or something else could happen. Why should you delay things in life, when life is short and you only live once, when you are sure that’s what you want. And that it’s what makes you happy and fulfilled.

And I notice people tend to label older men dating younger females as perverts. I can see where it applies to certain cases, but I know many real life examples where such is not the case at all. And where the relationship is much more loving and warm than many other “conventional” relationships.
People already find so much difficulty finding their significant others. Imagine how much more chance at finding love would open to you if you didn’t limit yourself by age. If you find your match at life in terms of maturity and character, why should age restrict you. BS I call.

maltreti started this translation thread in “The K2: Episode 1” comment #55:

Just wanted to tell you all something most of you didn’t pick up. The choir is actually singing in german. But i think it is not a german native speaking choir because they do have an accent that makes it difficult to understand some lines. Since I’m german I could understand it and it gave the scenes a lot more deepness. They sing mainly three lines, but i could only understand two correctly:
the first sounds like (but I’m not sure): “In the house. Does the child live in the house?” followed by another sentence i could not understand because other sounds made it difficult.
the second one is: “Let me live. I will run into the woods and never come back.”
And the third one: “Are you afraid? What are you afraid of?” After that there is a line I also don’t understand because of the accent they seem to have.

The second line is the most interesting here because it is a quote from the tale Snow White by the Brother’s Grimm. Snow White says this to the huntsman who has the order to kill her.
With the white gown and the long black hair the little girl does have the image of a little Snow White, doesn’t she?
Well I’m not sure if that should tell us something about the rest of the dramas story but maybe there are a lot more references that we just didn’t think of yet. It may turn out that this drama is more like a modern day version of snow white. And that doesn’t actually have to be a bad thing.

Since then, other beanies chimed in to try and make sense of the music. Like angieya’s reply:

Omo, I think I’ve finally deciphered that one missing line, is it “Muss erst aus dem Weg”? Or am I starting to make words up out of desperation? Lol. Content wise it would make sense since this seems to be an exchange between Evil Queen and Snow White.
And I can also hear “lebt das Kind im Haus”, “Wald” and “nimmermehr” now, so I think your last version is the most accurate. And I can’t unhear “Sei gegrüßt” now although it sounds so silly. ?

And in English:
In the house, the child lives in the house.
In the house, the child lives in the house.
Have to get rid of her.

Let me live, I want to run into the woods and never ever come back home.

Are you afraid? What are you afraid of?
Welcome and sleep unhappily.

Lol can’t believe we’re having a daylong discussion about 2minutes of choir music in a kdrama. ?

If you’re interested in the whole song discussion, check out the original thread here.

The translated interview in “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds from the original author’s point of view” seems to have resonated with a lot of beanies. ET shares what’s special about the writing in comment #21:

Although the drama is still airing, I say this of what I’ve seen so far. It is a piece of work that has been meticulously crafted by the writer. I can also imagine how she poured her heart and soul into writing the characters.

Often, I read of MDBC being dismissed as simple fluff. I don’t think simple necessarily equates to inferior. There are movies and dramas which looked simple at the first glance but they are a piece of art because the story is beautifully written and told. This is like savoring a simple bowl of noodles. The ingredients may not be many or expensive. Yet, it’s the best you have tasted because it’s masterfully cooked, beautifully presented and served with lots of heart. There is no point having wagu, foie gras and caviar if the cook butchers everything to make a dish.

Michykdrama highlights the author’s struggles as a mother in comment #28:

This writer speaks to my heart.

I’m so glad she brought up the fact that she needed to work after giving birth for her own sanity- because a woman’s worth isn’t just in giving birth and raising kids. But also, she acknowledged how giving birth made her a happier better writer. Beautiful balance in my opinion.

Motherhood can go hand in hand with working and be complementary. ❤️ There is a lot of stigma that motherhood will tank your career, or that once you have kids, your focus should be on them 100%. Glad to have a different view highlighted.

Writer Yoon- Fighting! 화이팅!

While WM writes in support of the genre in #29:

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of prejudice against romance writers, as if it doesn’t take much talent, time, or research to create a world and characters within a romantic setting. (Hint: it absolutely does.) I’ll out myself and say, yes, I write romances. Yes, I have been, and will be, put down because of my particular genre. This sweet, talented, amazing writer has created a wonderful, fun, romantic world full of intrigue, suspense, sacrifice, and love (of all sorts, not just man/woman).

And royal replies:

Love what you said!

I don’t know what romances you wrote and don’t know if I read it but I want to tell you that I adore your profession. Some people think it’s so easy to write one. It isn’t. I’m a fan of romance for both books and dramas. I love to see love blossom, in ways I had and never experienced. After all, isn’t love a powerful emotion that helps set us to be the people we are?

In “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 11,” Celine commented at #14:

Indeed one of the things I truly love about YeongOn is that they complement each other, they learn from each other, and they depend on each other. One may be a Prince and the other a girl disguised as a eunuch, but these two never felt imbalanced in their relationship. They’re so in-tune with each other that I never felt that one is pulling the weight more than the other. Sure Ra-on gets in trouble, but given her guise and her place in the palace, it’s bound to keep on happening. In her own little ways, Ra-on is helping and saving Yeong as well. Her words have spurred him to action to do what is right many a times. How can we not root for these two? /cries

delurked replied:

“… these two never felt imbalanced in their relationship.”

Truthfully, I did feel that the difference in status (eunuch-king, Joseon woman-man) did affect my perception of their relationship at first. While it was easy to squee over Yeong during the earlier episodes, I personally found it a little less natural to root for YeongOn as a couple, especially when Yeong took the active-wooing stance while Ra-on struggled for about an episode or so. A relationship is built on reciprocity, after all!

But ever since Ra-on came to terms with her identity as a woman in love with Yeong and allowed that to shine through her (KYJ really sold the look of a woman in love this episode!), I can say that they’ve really become well-matched.

Jenny commented on Byung-yeon’s pain at #37:

One thing’s for sure, I don’t want to be Kim hyung in this story. Like?? WTH. I’ll loose my mind brooding what to do. It’s very paralyzing.

Kayak:

Perhaps what they meant is that he would be so overloaded with everyone’s secrets and keeping track of which secrets he can’t tell to this or that person that he would be rendered silent and unable to fly in the air as often.

In that scene with Yoon Sung, although it wasn’t played for comedy I loved Byung Yeon’s weariness when YS was all “I’m in love with a wom–” and BY was just like “Keep your secret in your pants, I’m busy drinking tea, I’ve had a hard day” and YS tells him anyway.

Thursdaynexxt:

Not to mention, poor Byung Yeon hasn’t had his room to himself since Ra-on came! He’s probably sleep-deprived to boot.

Who knows, maybe he doesn’t always sleep up in the rafters, and wants to sleep in a proper bed for once?

In “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 12” at 1.2.3.2 Blueribbon mentions a possible theory for the ending of the show:

What if he fakes his death and runs away with Ra-On?

It’s one of the more popular theories floating around, but C-chan has a different view:

I might be in the minority when I say that I don’t want that AT ALL. Time and again, Yeong has proven to us that he is an intelligent, kind and politically savvy Prince who has the best interest of his country in his heart. He loves his country and its people, no doubt about it, and is actively fighting and planning and finding ways to get rid of the corruption in the government. He asked his Mother what kind of King he should be, and he took her words to heart. He’s been disheartened by the setbacks, along with a father who promised to help him but still can’t do anything more than quake in his shoes, and yet he’s never shown the desire to quit. The weight of responsibility is heavier than anything, but as he said to the King, ‘I didn’t choose to be a Crowned Prince, but I can choose to be what kind of Crowned Prince I am.’

Plus, he made that promise to Ra On to make Joseon a better place where children can be children and nothing is more beautiful than that. So I don’t really see anything in his personality that says he’ll abdicate or fake his death willingly.

The ‘willingly’ part is the problem. I am praying to the drama gods that they’ll somehow find a way to make Yeong fulfill all the promise he’s showing to be a great King but have Ra On with him too, because she’s one of the reasons why he’s so good at his job.

maryxiah continues the discussion:

That’s the thing that’s keeping ALL of us on our toes with Moonlight, we can’t predict how they’re going with this story, or which part they’ll follow the history and which part they wouldn’t. Because every possible scenarios just doesn’t seem to justify or be enough, because our crown prince is build up to be such a strong persona, we just couldn’t believe he would throw off everything to ride off the sunset with our female lead, but on the other hand, we just can’t wrap our head around where this is taking them (and us)?

And let’s not forget that Ra-on isn’t just guilty of complicit by being her father’s daughter, she’s also guilty of impersonating eunuch, with both of that charges, she’s already on her way to death sentence. I think the ultimate decision Yeong has to make is either to honor his promise to his dead mother, or to choose Ra-on, the love of his life. He can’t choose both because staying in the palace equals to death to Ra-on, at least that’s how I see it. I don’t see how they can clear Ra-on’s of both charges, and there’s that crown prince dying young thing to think about too.

C-chan:

I’m still actually waiting for Teacher Dasan’s oh-so-clever plan to help our babies together, although I’m thinking that’s been binned because of the tragic factors coming between them that’s been revealed.

The writer has got a mammoth task in making sure that the characters are treated respectfully with every decision she makes them undergo, but still following the logic and truth she’s built up in the drama. I do not envy her at all because whichever ending I think of, there’s always something that makes it wrong.

And I don’t think it’s so much as honoring his promise to his dead mother as it is about his own innate love for his country and people, and his own sense of justice and responsibility helped shaped by the late Queen and, eventually, Ra On. But yes. Choices, choices, all of them heartbreaking in their own right. Ah God, just kill them in each other’s arms already! (kidding!)

maryxiah:

*Nods nods* Let’s not turn them into Joseon Romeo and Juliet, I’m crossing my fingers for beautiful future for them, surrounded by kids and future grandkids. You know what, at this point of the story where I’m simply warmed by their love for one another, I don’t really “care” how they’ll give them their happy ending, I just want to see them be happy forever and ever. I still believe in fairy tales. *Wipe tears*

Meanwhile, Catgirl writes about the three friends in Episode 12 comment #30.

I love when those three start working together, because I think the three of them are a better version of the king, the prime minister, and the rebellion. Seeing the three of them together like that is like seeing a glimpse of a better future where there is a king who cares for his people, a prime minister who is not afraid to steer the king to the right path, and a guard who is loyal and kind.

Celine adds:

I love the contrast between the adults and the youngins. The adults are circling within their boundaries, but the youngins are going out there protecting those they care about and righting the wrongs. They grow with every single situation they find themselves in and the decisions they make to bring about change. It’s rather poetic.

And at 54.1.1, Anh says:

What Yeong need is not just more powerful but rather, more emotional support, someone that he can rest on when things get tough because he is intelligient enough to battle the evil minister, but the emotional toil is huge as well.

He asked his father to be that pillar but the King has failed to do so. However, luckily he has Raon by his side, to reassure him when his beliefs get shaken.

Raon represents the commoners, the poor people that always need help from the higher up, from those that have power. That why she is the cloud in “moonlight drawn by clouds”.

Yeong is moon, the one that has power, the one that look over everyone else and take care of them.

Looks like the leading man’s denial habit is catching in “Drinking Solo: Episode 8.” angieya comments at #8:

Ha-na, why did you have to call him out? I could watch Jung-seok coming up with excuses to do swoony stuff for hours…

– I’m only holding your hand because you’re so clumsy and always lose a shoe which will make you fall flat on your face one day or get you into an accident and you can’t miss any more of the joint class.
– I have to pick you up every day for work, the traffic is too bad and you can’t be one minute late for joint class.
– I’ll drive you home after work because taking public transport during rush hour is too tiring and you need to be well rested for the joint class.
– We need to eat every meal together, I’ve seen your instagram, you eat too much junk food when you’re on your own and it’s not good for your health and brain therefore lowers the quality of the joint class.
– We need to kiss, not that I want to but you keep staring at my lips and you need to fully concentrate for the joint class.
– We should go on an 1n2d trip to bond and work on our communication in order to improve the quality of the joint class.
– I bought all these clothes for you because you need to look your best for joint class.
– We should move in together, your apartment floods every time it rains and you need the time to prepare for joint class instead of drying your belongings.
Oh the possibilities are endless…..

tiktiktik writes in comment #10:

So I sweeeeeeaaaaar I read this recap and write comment just for the sake of joining class!!

There are lots more comments “for the sake of the joint class.”

Erratic notes in “Shopping King Louis: Episode 3” comment #2:

I find it hilarious how Louis’s underpants just might be his glass slipper.

Yoyo:

I would like to volunteer in helping Louis fit into those underpants/boxers, because Cinderella got help when she fitted that shoe. It’s only fair that we do the same.

IvoryLight writes about Yeon-hwa in “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 10” comment #135.1.1:

In Goryeo, power is what ensures that you live or die, and unfortunately, it’s people like Evil Queen mommy and Yeon Hwa who seem best suited to this. They are ruthless, smart and have managed to ball up their guilty consciences or empathy into a tiny pebble and it’s kinda bizarrely satisfying to see them succeed so well at getting what they want/go all our for their goals.
It’s an interesting foil to Hae Su’s character.

Seltzerwater replies:

I don’t think it’s bizarre at all to feel satisfied to see them succeed. I saw the showrunner of Bojack Horseman at a talk , (a completely different show with despicable character) and he said that the reason we feel compelled to watch a character is you see that character want something and you see them trying for it over and over again, and that struggle is what’s fascinating. It’s the way THROUGH that makes us interested not the end result. In scarlet heart, that’s why So is compelling to watch, we know what he wants: love. We see him struggling for it, attempting over and over again no matter how wrong-headed to get to his goal. We feel sympathy when he doesn’t get what he wants. We feel joy when he does. The same with Yeonhwa, her goal is CLEAR and we see her attempt over and over again. Again, viewer satisfaction. It’s really the only thing missing from the Su character, she really needs a compelling goal to get me on board other than being played by the very cute IU.

While Ira complains in comment #3 of “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 11.”

This drama keeps killing my fave female characters

Gaeina Lee:

Lesson learned to all the aspiring actress: Pick antagonist role (the Meanie).
They live longer and have more scenes in a drama or movie.
*LOL*

rentenmann adds:

Also: don’t accept any role being LJS’s mom.

Erratic:

This. Lol. You won’t last beyond the first episode.

Also in the Episode 11 thread, Kz says in comment #2.1.1.1:

This is the best episode of the series, so far. The review’s right. The rift that they made for Wook and Su was believable, and heartbreaking. It needed to be this heartbreaking, because the transition to So should also be as believable.

I was one of those who really wanted hae soo and Wook together. His promises seemed genuine and too good to be true. (Also, Ha Neul and IU have AMAZING chemistry).

There’s definitely a lot to ponder on this. His love and care for her seemed genuine, but only up to a point. Stack up against politics, survival, and just the rules and cultures of where they lived at that time, a Prince of his stature wouldn’t have been able to give up something so easily for love. I mean, the king himself had the lady he loves killed, to protect what was MORE important to him. I guess in the end, you go for what’s truly important to you. And Wook, however sad his turn to the dark side is (lol), knew just what he had to protect (or what he could lose).
Can’t wait for next episode!

In comment #2.3.2, transient says:

Prior to this, I have been wondering how the writer is going to make Su shift from Wook to So considering that Wook-Su relationship is so good and Wook is such a sweetie. A typical excuse like, “sorry, but I think I started to love him more”, as often used in dramas will make Su looks like a jerk and I will add her in my long list of female lead that I hate. I never expected the writer to come up as something as good the scene in the rain where he turned his back on her. That is pure genius. The writer only needed a single scene to rationalize the shift from Wook-Su to So-Su. Usually in dramas, the shift is done gradually over several scenes (or episodes), but in this drama it was done so simply and effectively in just a single scene.

The scene where Su’s face lights up with hope when she saw Wook, only to see Wook turning back. The realization struck her and she suddenly lost all her will that she slumped forward. Then So came, wordlessly, and Su gradually stood up straight again, with renewed hope and will. So much symbolism in that scene alone. The drama watcher in me was overjoyed.

Andy Pandy adds:

The end of Wook/Soo was so beautifully executed and effective that I really do have to give praise to the writer for defying my expectations. Many of us have been waiting for Wook/Soo to come to an end, and I was one of the many that was anxious about how it would end. I tried to think of what kind of end could come to the relationship when Soo is obviously not yet in love with So, and I was worried that the writer would just have Wook take a total 180 degree turn into monster territory and then have Soo run straight into So’s arms.

But no, at the end of all this, Wook isn’t a monster, and now the two have a crack in their relationship that cannot be fixed. Wook’s family are unlikely to ever exit the picture, he’s become a part of Yeonhwa’s scheming, and he’s no longer a shining, fairytale prince in Soo’s eyes.

I know people have commented that that him literally turning away from her is unnecessary/exaggerated, but the way I see it, I feel that it was one of the best courses of action. If he hadn’t shown up, we’d be left with a lot of uncertainty – Soo wouldn’t know where he actually stood with her in the matter, and she could’ve easily thought things out in his favor unless they had some kind of verbal confrontation about the matter, and I feel like that would just be too…in your face. How things played out managed to clearly relay to Soo what her relationship with Wook has become and shows how despite all of Wook’s pretty words, in the end, his actions speak louder than words.

In comment #71.2 Ga Yeon writes:

I agree. Yeon Hwa is good. She hit the nail on the head with Wook. She knew exactly what his weakness was and that enabled her to manipulate him however she wants. Yeon Hwa is definitely a well-written character. You hate her but you can’t help but to admire her intelligence.

The final scene between Wook and Su was tragic, you could almost see it through her eyes as though all the promises he had made and all the warnings Lady Oh had given her came flashing back to her. In that moment, it felt like she was utterly crushed by Wook.

In a moment she was helpless, So stood by her. He became her pillar of support and that was all she needed. What a turn of events, a man she thought would love her and would never change turned his back on her where as a man she thought to be a monster was with her until the end of the line.

E points out in comment #66:

Did anyone notice that Su didn’t even turn her head to see who her rain-shield was? She didn’t need to, because she already knew that there could be only one person standing beside her. And when she leaned back under his protection, I saw that as her accepting So.

dui:

Great point.

She had learned, unfortunately in a hard way, that only So who would really come to her rescue. Other princes might sympathize but didn’t have the guts to do something real.

It has always been So all along.

Tifa confesses in comment #191:

I keep replaying the rain scene just so I coukd get a glimpse of a wet LJK. How is he even real? Can Disney cast him as Shang in the live action Mulan film or something

jomo writes this in response:

Let’s get down to business to defeat Queen Yoo.
(Yes, she is my mother, but I hate her, too.)
We’re the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we’re through-
Yes, sir, I’ll make a wife out of Soo.

IvoryLight:

Watch my mane of glory
Cause I’m on fire, within
Once I’ve done my make up, I have a throne to win!
My brothers are out for my blood,
but Wook have I got news for you-
Somehow I’ll make a wife, out of Soo!

jomo:

I’m never gonna catch a break.
Change the minds those who knew me
Boy, was I a fool for trusting Mom!
This king’s got us scared to death.
The Queen just looks right through me.
Now I wish Ji Mong could build a bomb!

And IvoryLight:

So & Wook: Be my wife
Wook: You can make soap and we’ll walk through snow
So & Wook: Be my wife
So: You’ll be my person, I won’t let go
So & Wook: Be my wife
Wook: I’ll write you poems, we can take things slow
So: No matter what…I’ll always be your beau!

(Hint: you can sing it to this tune.)

drivebyknitting writes in comment #8 of “Jealousy Incarnate: Episode 11.”

OMG, the Quiznos. As I watched it, I thought “Oh man, player 2 has entered the game.”
Will Subway get jealous? Will it try to sabotage Quizno’s relationship with the show? Will it try to show Na Ri that it’s better than the other option?
TUNE IN NEXT WEEK TO FIND OUT.

bbstl:

I whooped at the Quiznos. And guessed Beanies around the world were doing the same while they imagined Subway saying, OH IT IS ON, SHOW!

blnmom:

Let the sandwich wars begin.

Andee:

So that’s why it’s called Jealousy Incarnate – it was about the development of the show and its partner, the Quizno’s sub, while Subway’s lurking in the background, surprised that people are falling in love with the sandwiches that aren’t theirs. HOW WILL IT STRIKE BACK?

While Rosepetal asks:

I’m wondering if this show is genius to have partnered with Quiznos or it’s just a mere coincidence that Subway didn’t get their subs on this show faster.

Quiznos vs. Subway. That is a drama in itself. So far Subway is ahead in the battle. As a matter of fact, I just noticed Subway is a sponsor for K2. Soon we'll have a scene with our hero showing Anna what she has been missing all this time in the outside world. One bite and her social phobia will be cured.

upon reading the comment again,
I don't think "break up because liking other person more" is a jerk moves.
It can't be help cause the heart chooses but the action is what make it different.
If you stop loving someone then parted away, your love probably just lingering feeling of security or something.

No one knew it was love in the 1st try unless you have other that you can't love despite their affection to you. So saying that you love someone else is a valid reason to break up, only the special affection can make you stay by someone's side and supported them.
Break up by situation happen, you saw their side that you can't agree and that's exactly when the heart's change.

relation to scarlet heart, it seems like the show make soo can't have flaw in her relationship with wook when it's over, it always because of him but imo, it also because her heart changes, and that wasn't a bad things, they just didn't understand each other and didn't matched. The feeling probably not that big for both them to overcame the problem.

Kayak's comment on Byung-yeon still cracks me up everytime I read it. And another beanie commented how fans turned that particular convo into bromance, making it confession from Yoon-sung to Byung-yeon, who still pining after Yeong. Lol, gah I'd love to see parody/fans video edit of that.

so ....
1) yoon sung have a heart for yeong, but it impossible in the era and yeong doesn't feel the same,
so yoon sung chooses his family and upon knowing that, the family suggest yoon sung to travel to china to clear his head,
he came back, seeing yeong already has someone , he drowned in thought , want to pour his story to god byeong yeon that night and silently god byung-yoon actually aware of this . . .

2) yoon sung come back from china, seeing byeong yeon after a decade and feel the old fog coming. Tried to imply his story as "my friend story" to confess to byeong yeon. But the fate is not for yoon sung cause byeon yeon already choose yeong for his life and ready to abandon his job as a full-time rebel for yeong. So byeong yeon stops yoon sung before hearing the story since it jeopardised their friendship

^
a story like that??

No Sancheezy, that's entirely another convo I had with crazyahjummafan, lol.

From what I understand, supposedly Yoon-sung is in love with Byung-yeon, who's in love with Yeong! When Yoon-sung was about to confess his love for Byung-yeon (in the scene where they were drinking together), Byung-yeon cut him off and told him not to say anything and to keep it in his heart, lol. Basically rejected!

The other convo I had with crazyahjummafan, we were talking about how Yoon-sung is in love with Yeong, evident from him taking the blade of the sword away from Yeong, he was visibly pining over him the whole time too, so Ra-on is his love rival. ^^

So basically they changed the subtitles for that scene to this:

YS: Have you read the letter? (Referring to the time YS handing the map of Chinese envoy, but in this case, it was treated as a love confession letter)
YS: You asked me to meet you like this...
BY: We have to meet anyway, so...
BY: That letter... I read it already.
YS: My wish is... that we leave everything behind and go travel the country together.
YS: Well, let's drink for us.
YS: If it's like that, should we come out?
BY: Do as you wish.
YS: I still feel like... you're feeling forced with my love. However, I cannot give up on the man of my life. I know it will be hard, to make you forget about Crown Prince...
BY: Don't mention Crown Prince! I'm no longer thinking about that person.
YS: Are you... confident that you can come to me? Never regret. Sharing every moments together. Never let go?

My very rough translation lolz

LOL, I thought he rejected Yoon-sung. Glad he didn't. Thanks for the translation!

@maryxiah There's a reason why.
The story before this scene is that YS has unrequited love with BY, knowing BY love LY, but couldn't stand to watch anymore after RO and LY became couple so YS send letter to BY.
BY loved LY, but upon accidentally listened to RA and LY convo about mermaid, he's heartbroken and received letter from YS. So probably he thought why not start anew with YS lolz
And BY has switched from part-time bodyguard to be full-time sewing, and the designs sketches are made by YS :D

Pfft, full time sewing LOL. They belong together. <3

I'm glad maltreti's comment on the German chorale was highlighted here. If I recalled correctly, her comment was on the second page. Often times when it comes to chorale, some words are indistinguishable and people's ears might not pick it up. In addition, a lot of the more well-known chorales are sung in Latin with the Roman Catholic Church being ever so prominent during the Medieval era of Western music and having latin texts (with those texts being sung in choirs). That is not to say non-Latin chorales were not sung during that time, but I do observe that some musical courses (in colleges) tend to highlight Latin chorales more so than other languages.

This what makes me appreciate the musical direction that K2 is going. It's not something that is thrown in randomly, and that those sung words perhaps are foreshadowing to the story's direction with the Snow White references from the chorale. Because I was kinda of likening Yoona's situation to that of Rapunzel (which is another German story and was collected by the Brothers Grimm) and did not think that Snow White would fit the storyline.
What makes chorales such a great choice for this story is that with these compositions, the composers can use augmentation, which can reveal a theme or motif through prolonging the length of the notes. Also the texture as well as certain lines can transition from polyphonic (multiple voices) to monophonic (one singular "voice" ), creating an unison and emphasizing to a degree a certain line or the theme.
Hence, why it's something music directors can playfully utilize and it takes great timing to take a certain portion of a piece or song and have it inserted into a drama scene that correlates to the drama's storyline. Hats off to those wonderful music directors and their various musical choices.

However, for K2, there were times where I doubted the constant use of the chorales and felt it was a bit jarring. Hoping the music director can shorten the usage to a lesser amount, while retaining important portions of the music for the drama.

Yeah that's what I thought as well last week but after seeing in what kind of scene they used that song again in ep.3 and the overall development this week I wonder if we might have given them a little bit too much credit and taken the drama a bit too serious. Well I did for sure since ep.3 gave me whiplash but while watching ep.4 an hour ago I thought "ah ok, so this is where we're heading...ok then, reset." Lol

Omg those apocalypse comments made me laugh so hard!

Hmmmmmm, I have to disagree with the age gap comments. Of course there are plenty of relationships with large age gaps that are healthy and functioning but there's a lot of room for power imbalance. A 20-something year old is not nearly as mature as a 30-something year old, and I certainly wouldn't let any 18-year olds I know get in a relationship with someone more than a few years older than them. Being a young adult myself and seeing my brother who's in college, I realize just how immature I was even a year ago.

In conclusion, age gaps in relationships are okay but I think it's reasonable to be concerned when the younger person is a very young adult (18-early 20s).

I think ur falling into the exact trap that Beanie was referring to in her point. lol. Ur limiting others 2 the experience of ur own emotional immature self at that age. I agree w/ the other comment that it's unfair to limit others. Like some have different standards than others.

I was no precocious child, and have no intention of going into marriage w/ some1 older right now. But I'm 19, and I don't know if it's because I've dealt w/ adults since an early age, or because I've worked at a lot of places, but I've stopped feeling "unequal" to adults for some years now. In my current workplace, I deal w/ co-workers or even superiors as equals, lol. And in general (w/ some exceptions), clients take me seriously (2 b fair, the industry I work in values skills more than appearance). Maybe because I've seen so many, who behave worse than teenagers at 30 or even 40, w/ a baffling lack of foresight or even insight. lol. I give respect where it is deserved, not because of age so I stopped being intimidated by "older adults" long ago. Establishment too. So about unequal power, I don't feel it. If som1 wants to hold age against me, even implicit power, I don't hesitate to let them know that's not how I do business. And I'm good at work.

I have no doubt I still have much more time to develop as a person, but I don't see a problem w/ being w/ som1 much much older if she fits me. I can grow from the experience. Perhaps faster w/ it than w/o it tbh. I've been learning a lot from dating so far and the more mature the partner, the more I learned. Hmmm. In fact, I don't think I mind getting into a serious relationship w/ even a mother tbh... if I develop affection for her child, don't see the problem. Just two cents.

I don't want to start a war, but I have to disagree with your disagreement.

There's a lot of room for a power struggle in similar or "respectful" age differences, i.e. my father being 5 months older than my mother. However, that relationship had the struggle and wasn't something I'd wish on anyone.

As long as both parties can respect and love each other compatibility, it's fine. One person can have more power, in my opinion, if the power isn't abused and instead used to care for the "weaker" side of the relationship. This is in romantic love or other.

I'm 21. I've been called a deep soul all my life, though I think it's more that I didn't ever have a chance for childhood innocence and found all that frivolous. I have good friends ranging from 10 - 90 years old. And while I may not have experienced first hand or witnessed second hand some of the things they have, I wouldn't say that any, especially not the 30-35 year olds, by default are more mature than me.

And maturity level doesn't have an overpowering say in whether or not someone should be in a relationship. Hopefully, everyone will continue to mature for their entire lives. But people are going to do it at different speeds. If both partners are at a similar state or rate of development, 18 & 30 can be the same as 22 & 25.

Personally, I'd prefer if very young adults, and I don't know when that stops exactly, have time to explore being a single and legal person. "Have time to live outside of school" so be it. But media doesn't represent that often. Nor should it delay a love match that makes sense otherwise.

You brought up important points.

(To the tune of Disney's "Somewhere Out There")

Somewhere out there
Beneath the stars so bright
My prince's thinking of me
And missing me tonight

Somewhere out there
He's closed his eyes, murmuring a prayer
That we'll be with each other
Somehow, somewhere, some day

He came to me without a word and drove away the rain
He kept me warm, he kept me safe, he took away my pain
He put his arms around me, held me close in his embrace
He gave me strength, he made me whole so I can live again

Somewhere, some day
If love can see us through
Then we'll be together
Somewhere out there
Out where dreams
Come true...

Sure movies and dramas should have a message or a theme but they more often than not, reflect life or at least tell stories about life and affairs happen in life.
