Ji-soo falls for Strong Woman Park Bo-young for JTBC drama

Ji-soo is on a roll! He just wrapped up work on JTBC’s recent Friday-Saturday drama Fantastic (and can still be seen in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, although that finished filming first), and now he’s lined up another JTBC project in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Or, as I think of it, That Drama I’m Excited About Because of Park Bo-young (Oh My Ghostess). (It hardly even matters what it’s about, because I love Park Bo-young that much, and also, she tends to pick projects well.)

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, which comes from writer Baek Mi-kyung of Beloved Eun-dong and PD Lee Hyung-min of Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki, has only been described in very broad terms thus far, and is all about a strong woman. Which, okay, is something I am a fan of, but also the thinnest description ever. (Though I’m wondering what kind of strong that means: Is she a streetwise tough cookie, a resilient survivor, a weightlifting fairy? Only time — and more drama promos — will tell.)

Park Bo-young was cast early on, which was exciting news since she is adorable, energetic, and talented, and I’d feared that it would take her forever to return to dramas after lighting up the screen in last year’s Oh My Ghostess. Park Hyung-shik (High Society) was cast next in the leading man role, a self-made man and young CEO with a bright, tsundere personality.

Ji-soo will play a principled detective who has harbored a longtime one-sided love for the heroine, a role I can easily see him taking on after playing a principled lawyer in Fantastic, who loved rules and slept with his legal reference books. He’ll be the third leg in the main love triangle, and while I do fear that this means another second lead role for Ji-soo, given how new he still is to dramaland, I can live with him building up his filmography and taking on new characters. (And to be honest, he has played a lot of very similar characters, so he could use some time to branch out and explore.) I might suffer a pretty acute case of Second Lead Syndrome, but you know, when those are depicted well, they hurt so good.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon will premiere in January or February.

10 dollars says he gets a lead role and romance before Lee Soo Hyuk does haha (at least JS got his own romance of sorts in Fantastic. for LSH so far its bupkiss haha)
But yeah I can def see Ji Soo as leading man material in a few years (he's still so young and new now, i'd prefer he stays as a supporting role for now). Which i do not think of every actor who constantly ends up as a secondary lead or supporting role. his time will come~

I'm sad that he has a one sided love, but I'm never going to say no to Ji Soo. It's okay, puppy. You'll get the leading lady soon enough.

After a year of tackling similar roles each time, I think it's time for Jisoo to expand his horizon. He needs to pick a drama now that will challenge him as an actor. I'm not sure why he keeps taking on second lead role, not that anything's wrong with it. It's just that he cannot be pigeonhole. I mean his hyungs like Byun Yo Han and Ryu Jun Yeol have a more diverse résumés than him.

Now, I will watch the drama, of course. I'm just hoping next year he will pick a challenging role next time.

Exactly!

I love Ji Soo. He's a great actor. But as a fan, it is starting to annoy me how it looks like, I don't know, looks like he's not careful on choosing his dramas. I mean, come on, another one-sided love supporting role? And boy, I think he needs to rest too, can't go on taking drama after another, fans are the best when it comes to waiting, you know.

lol why do u assume he is "choosing" to be a second lead? he's still young and only debut like a year or so ago! no one gets to waltz right into a lead role from the get go.
and no offense to Ji Soo but Byun Yo Han and Ryu Jun Yeol can prob act circles around him. but tbf they are also considerably older (in their 30s) while he's not even 25 yet. give the kid some time. y'all so impatient haha. tbh i think he needs to be resting considering that p serious bone infection/tendon inflammation thing he had not too long ago. (and its not like he needs to rush to get all the work in at once since he wont have to go to the army for another 5-6 yrs)

He is not too young though. He is even a few months older than Park Bo Gum and Yoo Seung Ho and those 2 are already lead roles and are famous publicly. Kim Soo Hyun is younger than him when he gets his first big break and he did not have to wait. He only have 2 drama (WISFC and Giant) prior to Dream High. He got his Baeksang Best Actor trophy at 24. I think that if you want to be a top star before military then you have to be on leading man status by your early 20s already. Most famous hall you top stars now didn't really became support for so long because they gather public interest and soon was on leading status even if their 1st lead might not be a huge success. What I am saying is Ji soo might get stuck in this kind of role and it will be hard for him to be some lead. He reminds me on Sun Joon. I hope he don't follow the same career path.

@pogo: hello again! ?
Ikr why does jisoo (or his agency) do this to himself? Am not really understanding why he has to literally take on project after project in dramas/variety etc. Is he or his agency afraid his popularity will fade off if he just takes a break? Goodness the dude just had bone surgery! He was limping on a crutch in bts videos on the fantastic set. Why can't he just take a few months off and recuperate. Last thing he wants is this thing to get worst with seriously permanent consequences.

Also this role isn't that fantastic that he HAS to take it up? It's yet another second lead role wherein he doesn't get the girl. He's been playing this role in almost every drama. Risks getting typecast at this rate. And if audiences keep seeing him everywhere like this he'll be so overexposed ppl are gonna get tired of him. Also shouldn't he be expanding his portfolio more and venturing into movies/independent films more? That's where the acting calibre is, not in K drama land. Which makes me think his agency or whoever is just pushing this route just for popularity sakes cause drama episodes don't really bring in the money if you're not an A lister. And usually this is how I lose interest in an actor I like too - when they get too overexposed!

This all probably has alot to do with the korean culture of prizing working oneself - literally to death in some cases - so hard over taking care of one's health. This mentality is so dangerous. /rant over

OMG!! Lined up for another project already?! Not sure when the filming will start, but I sure hope he can get some rest first. I loooved him in Fantastic and was hoping he can have more time to let his leg recover after that since he's just on his way to healing completely... I do hope he's taking care his health.

Very excited about this project after popping on DB and seeing Jisoo in my face, squealing, of course. I guess I don't expect him to play lead just yet against these "bigger" names who have had more works under their belt. He will get his spotlight in due time. He's already stealing more noona hearts with his role in Fantastic, so he's doing great in terms of building up his repertoire. Would be interesting to see him as a detective, and I do hope he will venture to attempt different characters so that he's not boxed in as a certain type. Second Lead Syndrome will be strong since my love for Jisoo is just more than for PHS. Kekeke~ Hope the filming goes smoothly.

Amd

And for those who commented why he takes the 2nd lead roles? Maybe because that's all he is offered. I can see him as one of the siblings in a weekend drama but definitely not a lead role yet.

He was cute in Page turner but I think he is okay. PHS is okay too. It's PBY who is the strongest actor amongst the 3. I hope her character is written well.

Pretty good news, I like Ji Soo. I actually think modern dramas suit him more than sageuk...I'm watching Moon Lovers and I'm disappointed with his performance (a total let down!). He needs to work on his pronunciation before tackling another historical drama imo because his sageuk speech is atrocious. He was amazing in 'Fantastic' and 'Angry Mom'. I trust him, this kind of role is right up his alley...

Other than that I'm really looking forward to this drama, Hyungsik being of course the main reason *grin*

Sorry Ji Soo but I surely won't have second lead syndrome this time around *wink*

Park/Park couple for the win!

after saw he's not playing leading man: "ahh.. he should take some rest. isnt he just recover from that injury.." (or i dont really know what happened during fantastic).
the image of ji soo and park bo young (in bang wool mode, thats what i imagine the strong means) is cuteness overload, so the word 'second lead' just killed my excitement.. i love watching ji soo, but now i think he better take a break. have some rest.

Yessssssssssssss to this. I don't mind an actor/actress doing supporting roles all the time. But they have to be meatier roles very time. They have to be challenging the actor. And Kang Ha Neul is a perfect example of that. His résumé is very diverse. Jisoo's hyung, Byun Yo Han is also doing the same thing. And I appreciate actors/screen that challenge themselves.

Partly, I blame Jisoo's agency for accepting all roles for him. I'm sure they can ask for better based on what he has done already.

I am getting to the point of being overdosed on Ji Soo. I kinda need a little break from him and he needs to recuperate from surgery for a least 2 or 3 months. If he is going for these second lead roles then the characters are going to have to be diverse and not just fixated on him playing the "lovesick puppy".

Honestly I don't think Ji Soo is leading material yet, but... although he is second lead, cannot they give him something else to do rather than be broken-hearted puppy ? Why cannot they give him his own partner as well? A cool and not a bitchy second female lead that has a crush on second male lead? You know we have plenty of talented girls line up for this role.

I really want to trust jTBC like I always do, I love this PD's & writer's past project, so hopefully it won't disappoint.

I know everyone loves Ji Soo, but I'm personally tired of him. I've seen him in so many dramas recently and he plays very similar roles in different settings. If you're going to take several roles back to back they should at least be interesting.

But if I have to watch Ji Soo since he's in the dramas I want to watch I most certainly prefer he play second lead. I definitely don't think he's ready for a first lead. He's just an okay actor (and he's terrible in Moon Lovers). When he impresses me as a second lead then I'll be ready to see him as a first lead.

Okei! after being super super excited here is my thoughts again...

I am quiet worry for Jisoo due to his health condition. And 50% of me think that its great that he is not afraid to take any roles just like my another favorite actor Kang Haneul ( thanks for the great comparison la Plume and Gelai ) and that he should be doing all those supporting roles to be ready for the main read.

the other 50% of me think that will he be type cast as a second lead, there are so many handsome/great actors like Jisoo who only got to play 2nd lead. Even Kang Ha Neul yet to play for the main role.

Acting PBY, i think he'll get so much opportunity learn from her.

Ji Soo seems to like second lead or unrequited romances. He always plays them and even in SHR, he ended up being the third romantic lead by falling in unrequited love. I thought he was a side character by looking at the promos. :O

Only Page Turner was a drama that had him play the main lead, but it wasn't really about the romance so... :( and it ended without addressing the consequences of the last part. I still loved it, but there have to be consequences for lying to the female lead (technically). There has to be a cute makeup scene like in the second episode (helium and balloons). I am just going to believe that is what happens in between the concert and last couple of cuts.

I don't know much about his movies, but he always ends with the same kind of unrequited love in TV dramas even if his characters may be a bit different from the others. Always the same fate... Angry Mom, Sassy Go Go, Doctors (he plays the ex), etc.

I haven't watched Fantastic yet, but I have heard about the "Noona" crush. I hope things go well.

Unrequited love isn't a bad feeling, but you feel bad when all the characters have the same face. I can't watch the same face be rejected over and over again. Some damn good presence though.

I am so used to his second lead character.

When I read about Ji Soo being cast for the Strong Heart drama... my first thought was " He is probably second lead," and at that time I had no information about the casting of the female or male lead. :'(

Since he acts a lot, he might get to be the main lead someday, but I just think he likes being the second lead.
He probably asks for the role.

I can't wait though to watch this drama and his other released which I have not watched yet.
