Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 17

It’s lonely up at the top, and no one’s coming to realize that more than So. Everyone’s becoming increasingly more isolated with all the major changes taking place within the palace, and friends seem to be in short supply. Loyal family members are in even shorter supply. But there’s always love, and these two better relish it while they still can.

EPISODE 17 RECAP

After telling Su of his desire to become king, So manages a smile as he asks, “Why, do you not want me to become king?” Su says she doesn’t, but that she hates the idea of being separated from him even more.

“You will become king,” she tells him. “I know that.” But concern floods her expression as she implores him to not kill his brothers, to which he nods his head in agreement, taking her hands in his.

March of 949, one year later.

The palace gates are closed against the sound of a revolt let by So, as Su nervously tends to the king. He swats away the tea she offers, claiming it’s poison, but then he decides to blame his entire situation on her.

According to King Jeongjong, the reason he’s plagued by the ghosts of Hyejong, Eun, Soon-deok, and even King Taejo is because she helped So to cover up his scar. Because So was able to then take what was rightfully his, he’s ended up like this.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong rushes in to declare that So’s leading a revolt. She pleads with her son to put it to paper that he’ll be abdicating the throne to Jung, since they can’t lose the throne.

“Then… what will become of me? Am I even your son? What am I to you, Mother? Just something that exists to sit on the throne?” Jeongjong cries as he says this, the realization hitting hard. Despite her pleads to the contrary, he now claims to finally understand So, and orders his mother to be taken away.

Su turns to leave, but the king rises on shaky legs to advance menacingly toward her.

Unlike the evil queen, Queen Sinjeong is much more levelheaded about what’s to come, and though she says she’ll follow Princess Yeonhwa’s lead, she tells her daughter that there was something she never taught her: “If you want to become master of the palace, you must be willing to give something up.”

She tells Yeonhwa that she could give up love in order to have the world at her fingertips, or have love, but not the world. “What if I want the whole world?” the princess asks haughtily. To that, her mother can only say that she will cast Wook aside, presumably in order to survive.

Alongside Grand General Park and Baek-ah, So leads an impressive number of forces to storm the palace gates. But before they can advance, Princess Yeonhwa comes out to meet them, accompanied by only a few soldiers.

“I will help you enter the palace without any bloodshed,” she says, the gate open behind her. So says he won’t forget what she’s done, and the men behind him cheer.

King Jeongjong starts laughing as the sounds come ever nearer, though tears fill his eyes as he pours his soul out to Su. “What have I done so wrong?” I was afraid that I would be cast aside as well, just like So was.” Sounding like a lost little boy, he says that his mother told him he wasn’t lacking.

But then he pivots back to blaming Su for everything, throwing her to the ground in the process. As he coughs from his mysterious illness, he begins to write the decree his mother wanted, but with a twist: Su gets to pick the next king. Yes, really.

Before she can answer, and with the sounds drawing ever nearer, Jeongjong writes his answer and holds it out to Su in shaking hands. But then he chokes, coughs, smiles just a little, and promptly collapses. In voiceover, we hear him say, “I was just trying to survive.”

Su cries in fear as the king’s dead eyes stare up at her. So bursts in, takes stock, and quickly reads what the king left behind. After asking Su if she’s read it, he tears it up.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong comes in to see her son dead. Su drops to her knees to pay her greetings to the new king, So, with the traditional cries of “Manseh! Manseh! Manseh!” So claims that the king abdicated to him before he died, which is all everyone else needs to hail him as king.

Cut to: So being officially crowned as KING GWANGJONG, fourth king of Goryeo (but for ease of use, we’ll stick to calling him So). And Su, no longer dressed as a court lady, smiles to see him in his kingly robes as she thinks to herself that he’ll no longer be remembered for leaving a bloody trail behind his ascent to the throne. “I will help you,” she adds, smiling at him.

We finally get a glimpse of Wook as he broods over his mother’s warnings for him to distance himself from the royal family—their own family will push to have a queen in the palace instead of a king now.

Princess Yeonhwa asks her brother why he didn’t attend the coronation, but he calls her cruel for wanting him to see So on a seat he desperately wanted for himself. All his best laid plans went to waste, since So became the hero who brought down the traitor (Jeongjong) instead of him.

Despite that, Yeonhwa still pleads for his support. If he helps her to become queen, she promises to repay him for all the pain he’s suffered. But she can’t seem to get a reaction—positive or negative—out of him.

So reads through kingly missives until he arrives at one asking for the capital to be moved to Seokyeong (which was Jeongjong’s original plan). But So orders a stop to be put to all the construction, declaring that the capital will stay exactly where it is.

Once he hears that Su is waiting for him, So enters his quarters to find her sleeping sitting up against his bed. He apologizes for making her wait, and shares his kingly dinner with her and Baek-ah, who keeps referring to him formally as “Your Majesty” despite So telling him to just call him “hyung-nim” when they’re alone.

Since Baek-ah replied with the incredibly formal “Your grace is immeasurable” when So put a bit of meat on his rice, Su pranks him by sneaking another piece of protein onto Baek-ah’s plate, prompting the same knee-jerk reaction from Baek-ah. She and So have a good laugh at Baek-ah’s expense.

So is genuinely happy to be sharing a meal with them, seeming more at ease than he’s ever been before. Later, Su approaches him as he sleeps and tucks him in, though he wakes suddenly from a nightmare, calling her name.

When he comes to his senses, he immediately pulls her into an embrace: “I thought you were gone.” She tells him that she won’t leave until he’s asleep, but instead, he pulls her down into the bed with him. “We can just sleep together,” he proposes, though she leaves the warmth of his arms.

She’s afraid of rumors spreading, though he isn’t, and doesn’t want her to leave him alone. He feels suffocated by the specters of those who’ve slept in this room before him, and asks her to stay with him. Then, like a little boy, he snuggles up to her with his head in her lap, asking for her to tell him a story.

She decides to tell him the story of “Little Red Riding Hood,” which he falls asleep to. In the morning, Su wakes up in his bed to find him gone. We cut to her confiding in Woo-hee later, though Woo-hee warns her to be careful—the king will need a new queen, so everyone will have their eyes on her.

She’s called to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s quarters only to be confronted by Jung with the remnants of the decree So tore up. The queen wants to know if the king truly did name So as his successor, and Su shakily answers that he did. (They couldn’t just… piece together the remnants to find out?)

The evil queen calls Su out on her lies, demanding to know the truth. She’s stopped by So’s intervention, as he pulls Su out of his mother’s grasp and tells her to ask her questions to him directly. When the queen asks why he tore the decree, So denies being the one who did it.

Su’s hand tightens within his own as So claims that Jeongjong definitely gave the throne to him, even though Jung raises the question as to why he’d do that when Jeongjong had a son of his own. “If you are that curious,” So ventures, “do you want to ask him in the afterlife?”

So makes the threat very clear that if Jeongjong hadn’t abdicated to him, then he would have been forced to usurp the throne, which would have been much, much bloodier. He does take issue to his mother refusing to be called Queen Mother though, since she all but disowns him as she calls him a thief who stole the throne from her real son.

After leading Su out by her hand, So tells her that she’s not to heed anyone’s summons without his permission first. Before she can get a word in edgewise, he’s gone.

Astronomer Choi tells the king that there are rumors going around that he fabricated the late king’s final decree and that Jeongjong’s only son should have been king.

But So puts his foot down, and orders that anyone submitting an appeal against him be charged with treason, and to kill everyone associated with the late king. “I shall not let a single soul live,” he adds menacingly.

Minister Park Young-gyu knows he’s soon to be arrested for spreading rumors that So fabricated the late king’s will and plans to take Woo-hee down with him by exposing her as a spy. Instead of letting him do that, she kills him, and he breaks off her norigae ornament as he falls.

This turns out to be a flashback, since we find Woo-hee nervously holding the very same ornament. She grabs it back from Baek-ah when he takes notice of it, but he has other things to focus on, like getting her adopted into a noble family so that they can be married.

They both know that it’s because she’s from Later Baekje, and because Baek-ah’s family has some bad history with Gyeon Hwon, the once-king of the region. A confusing voiceover from Minister Park tells us that Woo-hee is the granddaughter of Gyeon Hwon, and that he foresaw that Baek-ah would be in danger if he were to find out about her true lineage.

She can’t help but note the irony of their situation, in that the king of Goryeo killed her family, while the king of Later Baekje killed his grandmother’s family. But Baek-ah knows that none of that was their fault, and just wants them to focus on being together.

Despite So wanting him to stay close, Grand General Park formally asks to be allowed to retire peacefully to his hometown. He can’t help but be reminded of his daughter every time he looks at So, though he doesn’t seem to blame him for it—he only wishes that So become a good and wise king in his absence.

So tells Su about General Park leaving, before asking her if she’s curious to know whose name was written in the late king’s final decree. Does she think he stole the throne? Su says she couldn’t be any less curious about whose name was there, but So reveals that there wasn’t a name written at all.

Knowing that a blank space would leave the throne open to more fighting and confusion, he ripped it up, which Su commends him for. But then he grows more introspective as he notes how alone he really is—General Park is gone, Baek-ah sees him only as a king now, Jung sees him as a murderer, and his own mother considers him a thief.

“You were right,” he says, tears welling in his eyes. “The throne is frightening and lonely.” As one tear spills down, Su comforts him by telling him that he still has her, and comes to rest her head on his shoulder. “I will not leave you.”

Chae-ryung tells Su that she’ll be among the court ladies released from service now that there’s a new king, though she makes it clear that she doesn’t actually want to leave. She pleads for Su to ask the king to allow her to stay in Damiwon, which is later revealed to be part of ninth prince Won’s plan.

Won clearly wants her to stay in Damiwon as his spy, but Chae-ryung wonders if they shouldn’t use this opportunity (of her being freed) for them to just be together. But Won couldn’t be less interested in Chae-ryung as a free woman, and needs Chae-ryung the spy.

It’s made to seem as if they’re being spied upon themselves, though we don’t see who it is. The quick cut to So looking smug might tell us something, even as he faces off against fourteenth prince Jung and family members from his mother’s side.

They refuse to pledge loyalty to him, and Jung declares that they’ll find out what was really on the late king’s decree before they all leave as a group. Astronomer Choi warns So that it’ll be dangerous to leave the Chungju clan against him, which he can fix by either showing them the decree, or by getting even more powerful families on his side.

But all So can think about is that his mother refuses to acknowledge him as a son to the end. Aw.

Now that Su’s been moved to the king’s quarters, she and Woo-hee prepare food for him as a gift. Woo-hee tries to vaguely ask if actions have consequences—say, if she were to wrong someone else for her own happiness. Would she be forgiven?

Su says that she shouldn’t hurt others just so she can survive, but she wants to believe that the universe would be kinder to the two of them, who’ve had their share of suffering. “Even if we were selfish at times, we’ll be able to be forgiven. I plan on believing that,” she adds.

That night, Su encounters Wook outside, and he has the gall to be upset that she went to So in the end. “Now you are the king’s woman. How am I to accept that?” he asks stoically. Su simply replies that So was honest with her about his greed to have both her and the throne.

“Why is it that you insisted I could not become king? In your eyes, was I not enough to become king?” he asks. She insists it wasn’t like that, explaining that So was born under the star of a king. “It is not your fault,” she adds. “It is only nature taking its course, and it is fate.” So… it’s fate, and it’s fate?

Wook’s offended that she made her decision off what she believes to be fate. He broods in his library later while looking at the bracelet he once gave Su, and flashes back to their fond memories together. Then he shatters the jade pendant on the bracelet.

When Yeonhwa walks in, he tells her that he’ll help her become queen. “No one can have everything. Isn’t that only fair?” Ohh, he just wants revenge on Su. That’s cold.

So writes the verse of the poem Su so loved over and over again, though she doesn’t tell him the reason why she needs so many copies. They act like a normal couple with normal problems, with So smiling widely. But it’s that smile that unsettles Su, and she asks if anything happened to him today.

He denies it, and half-jokingly tells her not to try to know everything about him: “If you keep doing that when we’re not even married, I’ll want to run away.” She pouts that it’s because she spends all day waiting for him, so she’d rather spend her days in Damiwon being productive, at the very least.

She picks that time to bring up Chae-ryung’s plight, and So readily agrees to whatever she asks. When she says that she’d be lonely without Chae-ryung, So tells her that she won’t have to worry about that for long—not if they’re going to have children, anyway.

With a grin, So tells her that she’ll be visited by a doctor soon so she can start taking care of her health for their future children, though Su blusters that they aren’t even married yet. So blinks as though the idea hadn’t quite occurred to him, but he’s more than open to it: “Marriage? We can get married. When should we? Let’s do it when you want to.”

His overeagerness is adorable, but Su complains that the proposal isn’t impressive enough. Hadn’t he planned on proposing to her at the prayer stones? He jokes that he’ll have to come up with a satisfying proposal in order to marry her then, adding that it’s tougher to deal with her than it is to rule a country.

As promised, the royal doctor comes calling, and concludes that Su’s knee may make her unable to walk someday (from being tortured). But there’s a bigger problem in that she has heart palpitations, which has him claiming that all the frustration she’s had in life has caused an illness in both her heart and body.

“At this point,” the doctor says, “I cannot guarantee how long you will live.” (What.) Su blinks at him before flatly asking him to be honest with her about how long she’ll live.

We find her making her own pile of prayer stones later as she prays to just have ten more years, though she knows that she’s asking for a lot. “I want to be with him a little longer,” she all but whispers.

Jung and his sideburns come upon Su and her stones, causing him to wonder if she’s praying for So to live a long life as king. She instead replies that she’s praying for Jung to be her friend again, but he throws back that she once said she wouldn’t take anyone’s side—and then she took So’s.

Su reminds him of what a horrible king Jeongjong was, claiming that So ascending the throne was only natural order. Jung agrees with her there, but says that things only started going wrong when So came to the palace. Plus, he still believes So stole the throne.

He’s also worried about her, since he asks if she really thinks she can become queen. She’d just be one of many women for the king, and he doesn’t think that’s the life she wants, not when she told him of her dreams for the future. “Tell me whenever you get tired of this place. If you really want to leave, I have a way out,” he adds.

Wook pays a visit to the new king, claiming to be a representative of his vassals. He doesn’t waste time before listing the demands of said vassals, who want him to give up his hold on both the military and the treasury. In exchange, they’ll do their jobs and actually show up to court.

But So recognizes his requests for what they are, and plainly says no—by cutting him off from the military and the treasury, he’d be cutting off both his wings. “If you do not want to lose your wings,” Wook says, with a dramatic close-up, “how about your heart?”

That’s when he proclaims that his family requests to be joined with So’s in marriage.

Princess Yeonhwa visits Su, who’s less than happy with her company. But Yeonhwa claims that she’ll accept Su as the king’s woman, since she won’t care about who else he’s with. “What I want is honor and recognition. Also, I want my son on the throne,” Yeonhwa says, before adding with a smile, “I will be marrying His Majesty. I will be the king’s wife. I will be queen.”

With a mirthless smile, Wook tells So that he’ll have support from all the powerful families if he marries Yeonhwa, pointing out that So can’t protect that seat alone. “If you want to sit there for a long time, you need them on your side.”

So says that he already promised to marry someone else, and Wook knows he’s talking about Su. “That girl cannot become a queen,” Wook replies, though So shoots back that he always does what he says he’ll do.

Wook doesn’t need to remind him that she scarred her body to get out of marrying King Taejo, but he does. And they both know that a woman with a scar cannot be allowed to marry the king.

COMMENTS

This cliffhanger could’ve done more if events weren’t now tainted with the knowledge that Su is going to die—and though we can hope in vain that the doctor was just misinformed, sageuk doctors are never wrong in their diagnoses unless they’re being paid to lie. So sayeth the rules of Sageuk Dramaland.

And that just really puts a huge damper on everything, not necessarily because Su’s a character who’s earned our emotional investment, but because if there was a light at the end of this long, dark tunnel, it’s effectively gone now. Which isn’t to say that a show can’t be good if it doesn’t end happily, since that would be disingenuous to the generally unhappy spirit of Moon Lovers. My main concern is that the final episode will end with Su dying, and while that in and of itself wouldn’t be a terrible ending, the idea that we’ve been forewarned takes the dramatic tension away. Now we’ll just be waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I’m sincerely hoping that the next episode will put all my fears to rest about us spending this show’s last hours with Su being a noble idiot and hiding her illness, so I’ll table those concerns until we have a better idea of how she plans to deal with this news. It’d be nice if she helped us out by giving us even an inkling of how she really feels, but we got no information from her during the scene where she was told she didn’t have long to live, and having her calmly praying for ten more years made it all seem like a nonevent. Even though it is, and I’m sure it’ll be an even bigger one when it matters.

I wish I could tell what it is that made So’s coronation feel like just as much of a nonevent, despite the fact that it all happened so quickly. Having Jeongjong just die of unknown reasons before So barged in was a bit of a letdown, though maybe that’s just because we jumped a year ahead and suddenly So was waiting with an army at the gates to take over the palace. And all Jeongjong could do was blame Su for everything that ever happened, because he was crazy.

It was even more of a missed opportunity to keep Wook completely out of the events leading up to So’s coronation, just because I feel like we could’ve mined a lot more dramatic tension if So had a worthy rival. But since we didn’t, and since So seemed to become king in a vacuum, we instead got that really bizarre scene with So threatening to kill everyone who didn’t agree with his reign. It was an extreme character shift for him, and it would’ve been slightly more palatable had the show at all carried through with it—but instead we continued on as though it never happened.

It’s disappointing that So would devolve into mindless violence the second he got on the throne, because now more than ever is the time for him to play politics, and he’ll find himself outclassed by someone like Wook unless he gets his head in the game. But then I suppose his threats really didn’t matter when he didn’t carry through with them (at least as far as we know), so maybe we can just chalk it up to him learning on the job.

While it was strange to see Bloodthirsty So immediately followed by Puppy So, there was at least some solace to be found in So and Su’s scenes together, though it did feel like we were on borrowed time. I really wish that So could prove everyone wrong and not suffer the same constraints as those who’ve come before him, but things are admittedly looking a little bleak right now. But it’s not the end yet, and if this show has taught us nothing else, it’s that being king turns people into lunatics, and everything can change in an instant. In the meantime, I’ll start collecting prayer stones.

Wow, this show. I don't know what type of voodoo magic you used, but with all the flaws and bad editing, i'm still freakin' soooo invested on you. dang.

My brain kind of stopped working for now, i think my mind is gearing up for all the heartache that is to come.

Though i can't help but think, wasn't Queen Daemok known to be the "king maker"? I don't think Yeonhwa is in this story.

Come to think of it, Hae Soo is the power behind the throne. She knew everything. Aaand almost everything depends on her.
She knew Mu's illness and did not squeal a thing about it, even helped him with the symptoms. Mu became king.
Yo used Hae Soo to control So. Yo became king.
Hae Soo, who've seen So become a "slave" to the previous kings, bent her knees to proclaim So the new king. The decree was blank. It named no one. Hae Soo made So king.

Hae Soo is the one creating the history. She's not changing it. She's the catalyst.

Please show. if it's written in history that Gwangjong would marry the "King maker", couldn't you just tweak it a bit and by some miracle make Hae Soo the queen?
I'll join Heads and collect prayer stones.

This show, seriously.

Yes, Hae Soo the inconspicuous tea lady has now low key brought down three Goryeo Kings. Maybe all along we've been watching a drama about Hae Soo the greatest assassin in all the lands but we've just been like distracted by the editing.

Lol!
Her and Jimong. The time traveller assassins. haha

Hmmm.. i guess the bb cream covers so much more than scars and skin imperfections.

If i were SBS, I would open a bidding to all cosmetic lines to purchase PPL for when Hae Soo goes back to the modern world with her bb cream. It's the most powerful bb cream in all of Korea proven by time and history. Lol

That's Su's MO, you know being the harbinger of death and all...

@Candiceraine....good analysis, Hae Soo is the catalyst.....2 Princes and one King have asked her to marry, three Kings have died with her next to them in their last moment...Two KIngs were crowned because of her direct intervention(Mu and So)....how much more do we need to see she is the catalyst....

I just need to ask where in the world did the time travel part of this show disappear to...? ^^:; I have been waiting real patiently for ages now but still nothing after the really early episodes when Su was teaching the princes different modern terms....

Sorry this has just gotten me all pent up cause I really wanted to know what had happened to her in the first episode which caused her to get into that drunken state and then time travel but all we get is no explanation for that.... I really want one....

But otherwise the show makes sense when that part is taken out I just don't see why the time travel section was necessary when they don't even mention in anymore... XD

I think that's just it. She time travels and ends up stuck in Goryeo with a vague knowledge of history which she tries to use to prevent certain events..... which end up happening anyway precisely as a result of her actions (though perhaps not as she originally interprets them)

Yeah the purpose of the time travel just...disappeared? Lol. I dont even know what's the point of it now. Like I really do wanna know how the real Haesoo died and what was she doing in the princes bath of all places. Looks like we will never be getting an explanation - ever.

Maybe if you time travel, you end up forever in the state of consciousness you entered the wormhole.

Su came in drunk and has been drunk in Goryeo for almost a decade now. (That's the only way we can explain everything that's been happening from her point of view.)

Thanks for the recap!

I was rushing last night to come home and watch the raw version, but God, watching the episode made me feel like a bulimic: having a binge and puking after. Don't get me wrong, I love MLSHR to the point of loving its flaws... but the editing and endless flashbacks and timeskips leave everything in bad taste.

So/Soo scenes: A borrowed time, definitely. My tissues will be on standby.

Wook: Pathetic. Pathetic. Pathetic. I love KHN, but his character makes my lips curl in disgust.

Yo: Poor guy. Now mother doesn't want you anymore, ends up being a puppet even in death.

Chae-Ryung: Can someone give this girl a reality check? Betraying a friend who cares about you while loving a man who doesn't even give you a blink? I'm speechless....

And Soo: When the doctor gave her a bad news, she just like... blank. I was trying hard to read her expression: Is she sad? Is she upset? Is she angry? But no, I don't even get anything.

Now to the ending in three eps. I wonder how will they wrap it up?

Agree. I did re-watch the sweet So/Soo moments from the Korean version since the Chinese version only had a very short bit of it. The felling is that they are on borrowed time but I do sincerely hope it is not true.

Yo's ending was very sad. I mean in the last episode when the astronomer was telling So/Soo about the king's illness the description was hilarious. (we decided to do it on a stormy night and who could predict the monk would be hit by lightning lol).

Speechless about Chae-Ryung. But someone did witness that last exchange she had with the evil prince. So maybe the truth will come out after all. Although the ep 18 promo was just too tragic.

Ok please don't hate me..first of all i want to say no matter wat flawed editing bla5 with this show I'm still loving it very much i don't know why..n me think it has one of the best love triangle story bcoz the flow is realistic n not awkward or strange when she suddenly switch frm first love to true love..it can be seen frm how easy she gave up on wook but wait for so no matter what..the writer did a gud job and the otp chemistryyyy isssss sooo good..all of their scenes frm friendship to romance is great..n the time skip,at least the separation only last for like 5min hahahahahha
And i've read so many opinions abt it being sad etc.. when moonlight doesnt go according to history, many ppl were a little disappointed with the ending but when SH goes according to history, many ppl were angry..so i think there's no win win situation on this..but both series show us a different side of history, like how yeong is a gud king if he lives long and be king. That king gwangjong is not that brutal heartless king but there'sa reason behind his act n history and I'm quite satisfied with all that..
And maybe they can't hv happy ending in goryeo bcoz hae soo is not frm that time
era and she can't be queen and replace queen daemok..so when things are not fated,it won't happen hence the illness etc..she's not supposed to be there in the first place..
And as for yeonhwa, frm the start she's so consistent, she's smart capable strong and at least she cares a little for so..i know she's ambitious evil etc but she doesn't just want to marry so out of petty jealousy towards hae soo,she do it to survive..so i think without hae soo at least so is lucky to have her by his side..she even let hae soo have the king as she only wants power and position..i think she's the smartest character in the drama..hahahhahahaa well that's just my opinion..
Its only 3 ep left so no matter how hurtful it is let us enjoy the show and maybe we can hv a happy ending somewhere in the future..it is a sad love story at the first place but at least the so soo cute lovely moments is so good when they're finally together so its a good memories for them and us too ..:(:(:(:(:(

In my opinion Soo is from that time period. Only her soul/consciousness travelled back but that is one of her past reincarnations. She is "remembering" her past life with So. It is ok for her to be there.
I do not think Yeon hwa is caring for So...she loves the idea of power and what So represents if he is king. She always knew that he has the potential to become king and she wants to be Queen more for herself than for the sake of her family.

Thanks Head for the speedy recap.?
This is the first time in my drama addicting moments that I tirelessly refresh, wait & scroll for a recap even after I watched the raw & the subbed version.
Though some scenes made me a little confused but I wont deny that for a brief moment on Wang So & queen's encounter, I feel a slight pity on Wang Yo & shed a little tear for him. What an evil mother.
And the next scenes, I find myself admiring LJk..
to the point when I am not minding the essence of other scenes on the whole story. I just keep looking on his face.
He is just so pretty.?
I need to read the recap to have a grasp of the situation.

1. The only words I was capable of uttering as I watched the drama (while pulling my hair occasionally) way , "Oh my god... Oh my god"

2. I was so scared during the meal scene between So, Su and Baek Ah because So was so happy in there, and we know how happiness and So fares.

3. I have a very strong urge to punch Yeon Hwa's face, especially after seeing her devious grin when Wook said that he will make her the queen. I also wanted to punch her when she was strutting so confidently in Su's room, as if she already the queen.

4. I watched episode 1 again last night and realized that So stated off the drama being very unhinged, until Su manged to normalize him again. Now, he is statring to be unhinged again, with the first tell tale sign was when he told Ji Mong to prosecute every single person that questions his eligibility for the throne

5. Wook's mom. Man, she is something. I was very surprised when I saw her scene with Yeon Hwa during the revolt. Now we know for sure where Wook's intelligence and the menacing decisiveness for the throne comes from.

6. This drama really know how to kill people, I mean they really know how to make very good death scene. I was very sorry towards Yo to the point that I almost want Su to hold him in his last moments.

7. I had thought that Queen SMS pushed So away because of his disfigurement but loves her other perfect sons. I never thought that Queen SMS could be so heartless that for her, only the throne matters, and her sons are merely tools. I had thought she loved Yo. In the end, Yo is just like So, desperately doing everything they can in order to gain her love, a love that never existed in the first place. Except for the fact that So came to realize the futility of his efforts, but sadly Yo never realized that and ended up dying because of that. This makes me think that Yo is a victim of circumstances. He becomes who he is because of Queen SMS. Therefore, Queen SMS is the root of all evil that makes So the blood-laced king and Yo the antagonist that killed his own brother.

8. When Yo asked Su to choose the king, she did not say anything. But she was indeed the one who decided who would be the king when she was the first to greet So as king. I like it very much when this drama subtly showed this to us. Su might not realize it herself, but it was her that choose the next king.

9. Another thing that I realized is that, in the end, it was Su who stayed with all the kings as they had their last breath. No matter what her position at the time, be it a water maid, she is the only one that witnessed the kings passing and saw them being replaced. Taejo was right when he said that she would be witnessing all those.

I keep telling myself that I'm going to stop watching if it seems that the ending will be the same as the Chinese version. But LJG keeps drawing me back in. I just want to keep looking at him. Also, I really do love all the loving So/Su moments, with seeing So happy and at piece when he's with Su, even if it's just for a short time.

But, I am slowly checking out of this show. I used to watch the SBS version raw, then subbed, then read the recap, then watch them international version. Then, I dropped the international version, except when there were scenes not included in the SBS version. Now I'm reading the recaps to decide if I want to watch it or not (so far still watching- that LJG ;) ). BUT, if they truly take the route of the C-version with the sad ending, I'm OUT. Those words Su said to So "I will not leave you" were ominous weren't they? I was thinking "yes you will", another broken promise in this story.

At the start of every episode it states that the show "has taken a creative license to history". Why couldn't they have taken a little more creative license, put historical accuracy aside, make it a fantasy and give us our happy ending like another extremely popular show that has a similar title to it? Is that too much to ask?

Google for "Scarlet heart ryeo online". Choose HD videos with 720p. You can right click on the online video player (let the video to play for a few seconds to load the link) and choose "Save As/ Save Link As"

The way to differentiate the SBS version and the international version is the former has "SBS" watermark on the top of the video. The international version has no watermark while the youku/chinese version has hardsubbed chines subtitle

I watched only the subbed international version and I didn't know there was a time skip until I read this recap.

If I remember correctly the intl version opened with scene at Damiwon where Hae Su seemed to have just been back from her trip to So's, then was called by the King, then followed by the revolt. Did I just missed it, misunderstood, or the other version told a slightly different story?

The pacing of the drama is really making me feel confused, I can't explain it. I feel somehow numb, sometimes edgy, and then gloomy... I still like the show though, but its not giving me a definite vibe - like I want to be happy but I can't, or I wan't to feel their pain but also can't get that pull. I thought whatever feeling the show wanted us to have would peak as we get near the end but the farther we are the more uncertain I get, and not in a nice way. I'm sorry if my thoughts are incomprehensible, I can't even understand myself :(

The international version is borderline incoherent at times, and episode 17 starts off with a totally different opening five minutes from the SBS version. I mean, I can see very well why SBS re-edited the drama for domestic airing because the dramafever version was just weird in places.

I just found out that the international and SBS version has very much difference, the scenes' arrangement, etc. (I usually download from an encoder who apparently released the intl version, I didn't know this drama has 3 version, I thought there would be no diff or at least not that much, today because the encoder hasn't released yet and I can't wait to watch, I downloaded from somewhere else. But I also downloaded from my trusted encoder to re-watch [I like to watch things at least 2x] and was just confused when the beginning is diff)
Has it always been this way?
I've watched the int'l ver since the beginning and now I feel like everything's a lie lol. Do you think I should re-download everything?

I am going to rant a bit about this dearest drama.

I was so enthusiastic when hearing BBJX will have a korean adaptation. I love BBJX plot and character writing, but the romance and ending was meh. So I thought the korean adaptation will be better in that aspect. Granted, it was a heart-fluttering romance, but omg what the what with the poor plot and character writing?! The drama obtain creative license to history, there are no time-travelling drama ban like in China and there is a big story outline from its predecessor, yet it's still lacking. I am most upset with Hae Soo character, knowing that it looks like IU can pull out better than crying damsel. Ugh, I am worried about the ending though.
But I will still watch it because I loveeeee some iconic scenes from this drama. Like lady Hae piggybacked to death, Hae Soo fingers going throuh So's face, lady Oh's heroic sacrifice or So protecting Soo from rain.

Out of topic. Does anyone watch Infinity Challenge latest episode? Myung Soo (IU's song festival partner) goes to live in nature with Jun Ha as his slave. He named his slave Hae Soo *lol* Wonder if that ahjussi watch Moon Lovers as well.

This episode just confirmed what I've been thinking since the earlier eps: that Wook is so sweet and nice when things are going his way, all other times he's sketchy as fvck. Always has been, even when it came to Lady Hae and his promises to Su. Always content to be sneaky and never facing stuff head-on. Smh that I actually stanned him for a bit, but I like that he's not a one dimensional bad guy.

Well I've always picked apart the editing, some of the direction, some of the songs, but I've balanced that with all the interesting things the show has done, some of its wonderful moments, usually tragic, great subtext and imagery, and lots of events - the show never bored me for a second in the first 11 or 12 episodes.

That changed with the first time leap in episode 12. The editing got worse, the pacing got erratic, the romance lost its zip, the characters started getting sketched out somehow instead of developed further. Continuity was lost altogether, and the cinematography and imagery stopped mattering much to me.

I liked Yo's scene in this episode. That's it.

@Barbrey - yeah, Scarlet Heart frustrated me no end, and I've seriously questioned certain casting and storytelling decisions, but it never bored me except for when it suddenly decided to turn Wook and Su into a chaste secretly-betrothed/dating couple (if there was ever evidence of how writing can kill chemistry, it was probably in my eyerolling my way through Wook and Su's cave dates and ultimately empty promises of marriage). And Woo-hee's bug-eyed super-obvious assassination plots (I tuned out the fifth time she twirled her swords)

I really wasn't happy with the episode 14 time jump and the way it impacted the romance, either. Way too much important stuff being left offscreen, which is a massive disservice given that the actors can more than do justice to it.

I simply think that Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is not a good drama. For all the hype, promotion, magazine covers, and investment it's a mess. There is no character development, the storytelling is scattered, and the pacing is much too fast. Here's a question, does anyone even feel emotionally invested in these characters/story or are you just here for the fervent hope it will get better.

I'm totally emotionally invested in So, and in So/Su as a couple.

and yeah, the fact that I keep coming back here in the hope that this episode will be the one that turns it around and returns to episode 11 levels of great, probably means I'm emotionally invested in the drama too. For all its faults, I keep coming back where I've dropped technically "better" dramas at a far earlier stage.

Yes, I'm so emotionally invested in this drama too that I am at the point of being tired already :( The last half really is so stingy with emotional payoff and with the impending doom happening at this pace, I am already giving up any hope of catharsis.

It's a very long emotional limbo for me. Was it implied in their having children conversation that they didn't do "it" that controversial night and probably not doing it yet? This impression made me give up hope for this show. Not that I like that "stuff"" (hehe!). It's just that since we seldom see them in romantic scenes together and with Su's lack of intensity in showing her love for So, thinking they are doing it passionately offscreen fills that missing spark for me since such scenes can be left to the imagination... but they robbed us of even that? I want to believe and feel that they have a deep relationship to be able to feel the pain of their sad fate as a couple.

I'm not even asking for a happy ending but when we reach that climax towards the end (since I haven't felt any climax yet), I want to cry for them... I want a good cry from this show. Tears of genuine sadness, not of frustration.

Sorry if I am ranting a bit, I just love this drama that it hurts me to see it spiral down. I wish ep 17-20 prove me wrong.

I think we hoped for too much from the show when it came to So/Su (Su especially) expressing the more physical aspects of affection - I'm guessing part of that has to do with the more conservative tendencies of Korean network tv. I got the impression the original was rather bolder about it.

@banini

"Was it implied in their having children conversation that they didn’t do “it” that controversial night and probably not doing it yet?"

Yes, that was weird to me. I wanted to say "Nope, no backsies!" to the show. Show, you made it look like they physically consummated their relationship on candle night, you can't take it back.

Plus, when the doctor was examining Hae Soo and hesitating about giving her the diagnosis, I was totally expecting him to tell her she was already pregnant--not from that night, because according to the recap that was a year earlier, right?--but from their continued sexy-times. Harumph.

Though I agree that the pacing of the drama is not ideal, there IS a lot of character development, the basic core of the story is there, and the show has its brilliant moments if you only care to reflect and think about it rather than watch it in a superficial manner or just read the recaps.

And the answer to your question is YES, just go to the drama forums, and you will find MANY people feeling emotionally invested & even addicted to the characters/story and their fervent hope is for a good ending for their favorite & beloved characters.

And pardon my curiosity, but here's a question for you, since you think MLSHR is so bad and based on your question, its obvious you are not watching, why are you here? For the fervent hope that it gets worse?

You say that there is a lot of character development but where is it, Princes Jung, Won, Yo, Eun and Queen Sim were not develop as characters, they were/are one dimensional and placed into weak archetype roles. Woo Hee is still walking around for some apparent reason after trying to assassinate the previous King which is just plain illogical and the leading lady of this drama is basically irrelevant or a Mary Sue type where the only thing we are shown about her is the fact she can make soap or makeup but the audience knows absolutely nothing about what her goals/motivation is or what makes her tick as a character/person. Moon Lovers may have had its good moments but those moments do not make consistent, well told storytelling.

Have you seen the scene when So confronted Queen Yoo after he killed the monks? You should watch it again, this time pay particular attention to the queen's facial expressions and body language. The same goes to the scene where So drinks the poisoned tea. Watch the queen's facial expression carefully. Then you'll know that Queen Yoo is not one dimensional and the actress is very good.

I say it was executed poorly rather than not developing at all. tbh, with such limited time, i am satisfied if they just focus on developing major characters. the rest could just help move the plot forward. it's a big sacrifice to original but at least we are not facing such a rushed storyline.

Hahahaha. This, I agree wholeheartedly.

Scarlet Heart is a show that makes you think, ponder on the action of the characters and read between the lines. I yearn for the moment when I connect the dots and understand what has been left unsaid and the meaning behind all the subtlety. This is what excites me, the same way I was excited with W.

If you are looking for a show that is WYSIWYG, Scarlet Heart is not for you.

I think it never satisfied me, it never shows what I wish and I am familiar with the cast so I have the hope,
but since it never satisfied me, I am looking for the ep when it will so I can justify my reasoning to watch, as the example,
ooh at least I got to watch ep 11, at least his coronation is epic, at least this is a tragic love story, at least they are pretty but now I think I am just wasting my time,
it sounds shallow but it aired at the time I can watch, available and I just need to watch it,
since ep 13 I just want to know how it ends, besides as I-viewer I didn't watch this at the time it aired, even it aired like a fic tv schedule, probably not gonna watch either (the close-up and editing looked really bad bigger screen), no emotional attachment but I got nothing to do and I already started the drama

as a person who watched this with no other interest rather than for its story (not a fan of LJK, barely know other casts), I can honestly say I am emotionally invested with the show up until eps 12.

not so many drama offers the strong heroine. this factor drawn me in the first place.

the idea of making bitter-sweet romance drama with historical background, let alone adapt from other history, is challenging compare to abundance rom-com drama that following the same pattern over and over.

story telling felt reasonable until ep12 when they don't try too much following its original. I didn't think I recognize editing flaws as much as last couple episodes.

cinematography is so beautiful no matter what episode.

character developments were executed poorly after ep12, but quite promising in the beginning. Wook character is rarely seen in drama which normally put the actor/actress to stick with one flat character. Su and So were kind of dynamic characters where we could see they both change over times.

i have to admit it is kinda fail to rise above its own potential. but i don't think it is considered a not good drama. case in point, cheese in the trap. no one will argue it is a good drama despite all the trainwreck on the last episodes.

The character development (one of the key things for me in investing in any type of drama/film etc) is completely abysmal. At this point, I'm only watching to see what happens at the end and what happens to So - the only character I'm interested in. I've given up on everything else.

The writing/editing is in the gutter and I still am unable to wrap my head around how alot of these characters' rationalize things. Lot of things happen behind the scenes which leaves me with a ton of question marks about everything. Also, I tend to watch Sageuks cause of the political aspect, but that wasn't well written here either. The pacing is awful, not sure who thought that 20 episodes is enough to cover everything? Also, extremely unimportant characters are given way too much importance (case in point: woohee). Or weaker actors are given much more screentime (ie: again, woohee and in earlier eps, Eun/baekhyun). And the clincher for me is - the female lead has absolutely no agency/purpose to the story except to advance the male lead's growth. I find it very difficult connecting with many K-dramas because of this - they reduce the females to mostly just eye candy or just means to fulfilling someone else's (usually the guys') purpose. Here, Haesoo is like a mary-sue/candy type; Goryeo version. I have had a really tough time connecting with her thought process (cause the drama doesn't even give us much of that) and she usually reacts instead of initiates.

Idk. I'm so desensitized at this point that i'm just watching to see how this trainwreck ends!

I really wish Su had comforted or talked to Yo as he was dying and asking her "What did I do so wrong?" He really was a proxy king through his mother just as So was sent off, and made to be someone he was driven to be. He was "just trying to survive" as he says. This was a nice parallel with Su and again, I really wish she would have said something instead of just sitting there wide-eyed.

I feel like earlier in the show if Eun complained to her about something or So had mentioned how people were mistreating him, she would tell them to live through it the best they can and be better (or something like that, you nam sayin?) She lost what makes her special out of all the characters.
She also got tossed around pretty easily, c'mon girl you can take more than that.

It's a little disheartening seeing how tame and demure Su has become since the beginning of the show. Like she is losing development.

And Wook. Please. I love him (I'm a guy btw, Wook still bae. Anyone watch Weekly Idol with APINK and Eunji is Team Wook! YES!). I like how he straight up asked Su what the difference between him and So were, with wanting the throne and love, and how his version didn't work and she ended up going to So. I guess I agree with her that So trusted her in telling him his intents and greediness, but I mean look at what So is becoming. Also along with how So and Wook's intentions for becoming King were pretty much the same, Wook also had his late wife's blessing to try and live a better life by asking him to MARRY SU. He has so much burden on his shoulders. ALSO MOM WHAT YOU DOING? Seemed so random how she just gave up on him this episode. I get it, but no.

It was...a LITTLE out of character it seemed how the show developed So as a nice noble king, stopping construction on the new palace and letting those families who lost loved ones do what they wanted. To all of a sudden wanting to kill everyone who was associated with the conniving minister and Yo. Has Su directly created the King Gwangjong she knows from history by driving him into the throne? I mean she LITERALLY was the first to proclaim him king.

Part of me is also happy for Wook that he has passed on his feelings for Su. Part of me believes that he truly hasn't. The latter I actually believe and want.

Has everyone forgotten about Lady Hae too? Remember why you are where you are Su... c'mon now.

Also, Su needs to pep talk herself like she used to. Not all sad and melancholic like though.

The situation she is in now, WHICH SHE WANTED, is just her waiting around for the King to finish his King duties. I think Jung made a good point about how the royal family works - which is all anyone in this show has told Su: how the palace and royal family works. She never thought about being queen seriously? SERIOUSLY? You wanted the person you now love to be King. What did want to do after that? Just be in love and be best friends forever? I don't want to say it but c'mon now.

Agree! She is ok with So being king thinking that with her help he will not be remembered as a bloody king but she forgets one important bit. He needs strong allies to be able to sit on that throne long term. Did she really forget that Wook as well has the desire to be king? The whole sorry but you don't have the king star is not going to make Wook back down. In this Soo is too naive. She is indirectly creating the king she knows from history. Also her memories about Korean history were sketchy at best.

I was wondering how So would end up on the throne, but I didn't expect Su herself to be the one who sealed the deal!

also, yeah, Darth Wook is fire. A total asshole now, but a hot one.

Unbelievable no 1. The battle scene. Apparently it just need three people wearing a black mask running around at night to occupy the palace. and did i just see palace guards being piled up ?

Unbelievable no 2. Woo-hee acting. how can Yo trust her become a spy with that acting beyond my sense.

Unbelievable no 3. not only time, even characters are jumping around. one minute here was So with noble heart, one minute later So ordered killing bunch of people. rule out political strategic, it's just because he's caught cheating. Choi was so surprise with this out of no where character transformation, he needed to pull "went wide-eyed acting" to emphasize it. maybe he's honestly surprise with editing as the rest of us.

Unbelievable no 4. Jung no-baseline-downright-stupid grunge toward So that I can not bear anymore.

Unbelievable no 5. all about Su.
-suddenly got epiphany that her existence is to make sure Gwangjong is not become a king as told in history. Lady Oh and Taejo words meant nothing to her character growth.
-casually (almost smiling) told king rivalry that he can't be king because "it's a fate".
-can not put poker face at very crucial moment. no wonder queen SMSS knew she was lying with that eyes-mouth open expression. why can't she pull that calm face during she lied about hiding Jung in her room ?
-going all cute with the King. no offense with romance, but i feel like i watch young Su that still live in Wook house. maybe Su's maturity depends on her hair. long=childish, pony tail= depressed gal, bun=wise/mature lady who knows how to do decent lie.

well, I guess Wook's right. no one can have everything. not even viewer to have one good proper episode.

I don't know what to say about this show anymore. So much potential wasted especially LJG - he is stellar as Wang So. I will stay till the end after investing so much time and emotion. It is like watching a train coming your way at full speed and still let it hit you instead of getting off the tracks.

Told hubby that he will get his HD TV back to watch Walking Dead 7 after next week. His wife will be a zombie for awhile anyway.

I'm cracking up so much at this, especially unbelievables number 1 and 3. I actually started laughing out loud at the battle scene, half expecting the three of them to pull off their masks and start laughing too.

and yes how does Yo take woohee seriously as a spy i wonder? cause she'd be the last person in goryeo that i'd call on to spy for me. what with her dropping her ornament everywhere she goes.

I seem to have watched something different?

1. The battle scene was when Wang So, Baek Ah & General Park came with their huge army, and Yeon Hwa opened the palace gates for them, so they managed to take over without any fighting or bloodshed.

The people running around at night wearing masks were not to occupy the palace, but were to frighten the king who was already paranoid/fearful about the deaths of Mu & Eun. This follows from the previous episode when the king fainted/had a heart attack after the Jurchen envoy was struck by lighting in front of him. And there was a whole group of masked men, not only 3.

3. So ordered the killing of the Foreign Minister because he spread treasonous rumours about his succession to the throne, and also of any who dared to submit appeals against his right to the throne. He has to do this to get rid of the people plotting against him and to institute fear amongst the rest of the clans so that they don't dare to revolt and put another king on the throne. This is quite normal for a king in those tumultous times

there's a reason why Wang So turned from being civil to being deranged in a heartbeat. We could see that Wang So was not entirely prepared or wanted to be the King. He tore the paper up, and if we believe his explanation to Hae Soo, he thought that would create another internal war amongst his brothers. His ultimate aim was to prevent that from happening. However, it changed when Hae Soo started addressing him as the King of Goryeo. It changed him too. If he denies being a King, or if he allowed any rumours from continuing, Hae Soo will be in danger as it was she who confirmed him as a King. He had not choice but to back her up, because it would mean the death of Hae Soo if he was not the King.

In every story I watched, I always fell for the evil/bad guy but they turnout to be great/become good guy later. Same thing happened when I watch MLSHR which I fell for Wang So.

But at this point, I'm not sure either I love Wang So's character so much or my mind still sane to agree with your points. He probably kill them (including anyone who were present during Yo's death) in order to protect Hae Soo as well.

I have never been so thankful for the SBS version.

For those still caring enough about this drama to watch it (as opposed to just criticizing it for the fun of it), don't bother with the international/DF/One TV version. It'll just make you question your sanity. The SBS version was more focused and flowed better, particularly in the handling of the OTP relationship.

That said, the SBS version had its faults as well. And I don't want to depress myself (and others) by listing them.

What I liked: Yo. Whatever its faults, this show really knows how to kill off its characters. HJH did great job tackling an unsympathetic character, and in his final moments, Yo became much more humane and pathetic.

So, by and large, remains a consistent character. This show is really about his journey - his character shows the most growth and development, and I like how he's adjusting to the difficulties associated with governing from the top.

It's great to see how his love for Hae Soo remains steadfast and deep, but it's also equally great how he'll need to reconcile his love for HS with the need to stabilize his rule by making a political marriage. I hope the show does justice to his upcoming struggle. It'll be heartbreaking, but of the good kind, rather than the teeth-gnashing, WTF-ery induced by mind-boggling editing decisions.

I actually feel like the writers threw the characterisation of Wang So out the window this episode. Wang So post-monk massacre actively went down a more difficult route when there was a more brutal and efficient solution in place. ie when he married Mu's daughter instead of letting her be sent of to Khitan or trying to arrest Yo instead of killing him. He never came across as particularly blood thirsty but here his command to kill all of of Yo's guards and court ladies and those who petition came even as a shock to Ji-Mong.

Also his hasn't been domineering towards Hae Soo since the forced kiss, so him not letting her see people without his permission was bizarre. I don't know why he's suddenly feeling lonely when he spent years in Seokyeong and years as an ambassador for King Taejo before that without an issues. I was also under the impression previously that he was actually politically savy? But that clearly isn't the case from this episode.

Eugh, I don't know. Wang So's character was sort of the only thing Moon Lovers had going for it, so I don't know how to feel about his sudden change of character. I guess this is what happens when there's 4 episodes left and you have too much plot to get through.

I take it that the ruthless kill order was after his encounter with evil eomma, where she still didn't acknowledge him and doubt his authority. He was so furious, add that Su's involvement. Also, from the version I watched, seems like order was for any who would doubt his position and not necessarily everyone associated with the queen and past king (?)

As for Su, he was only protective of her since he knew people against him will give her a hard time.

Maybe So was lonely as king since he didn't have much support (he needed tha clans). Unlike in Seokyeong and as ambassador he may be pysically away but he was just following orders as well, not vying for subordinates' respect and support unlike being king where it's not physically being alone but having people to back you up.

I have the same thoughts as @Banini; that his kill order came in the wake of his mom's rejection (yet again), and that hurt at being rejected was compounded by the petitioners refusing to acknowledge his rule.

Thus the lashing out.

I thought So's character was reverting weirdly to pre-Soo wild-wolf behavior for 2 reasons:

1) The insane pressures of kingship in a ruthless, bloodthirsty time of treason, coup, fratricide.

2) History is trying to take back its shape now that he is king, to be the ruthless king Hae Soo remembers. Just as all her efforts made the history she remembers in the first place, because of her very existence in this time and place. Reality is bending and warping to try to turn So back into the bloody king.

Though some may say that many watched MLSHR just because of LJK, that is kind of true in the beginning.
I'm one of those who are emotionally invested on the drama itself.
Enjoying it and overlooking all its flaws.
Not that I'm LJk's fan but honestly, I find MLSHR addicting, full of intrigues & entertaining.
It makes everyone deliberate a lot on so many topics especially on its link to history which actually makes it more exciting to watch.
When you watched it, you know your watching a part of the history.
Not just emotionally attached but completely invested on finishing this till the end.?
On those times of so many heartbreaking scenes, I am one of those who shed bucket of tears.?
On those cute & romantic moments of Su & So, I am also one of those who were smiling from ear to ear due to excitement & happiness.
On those times that they inflict pain & heartaches on Wang So, I am one of those who wanted to punch the faces of Yo, Won, Wook & Jung and pull the hairs of Yeon hwa, Chae ryung and Woo hee till they become bald.?
And lastly, I am one of those who spend my time reading comments, posts and links here to understand the history from King Taejo till King Gwangjong reigns.?

That "dramatic" yet so jarring extreme close-up on Wook was unnecessary. I am all for the Kang Ha Neul pretty, but he's a good enough actor to pull of the drama without that really jarring, wobbly camera close up at the end.

I want to love this drama, I do. They touted it as epic but as has previously been said, everything's coming up disjointed. It feels like the editors just slammed their heads against the keyboard and that's what we're left with.

So much potential and so totally wasted.

I really want another drama with Kang Ha Neul and Lee Jun Ki as adversaries -- minus the wigs and weird ass editing this time.

So @cherryarrow and I were talking about the original novel's ending--we both agree it's the superior ending to the C-drama's, and if MLSHR goes down this route it'd be splendid as well. But it seems like MLSHR has put a lot more effort into the mechanics of Su's time travelling, so there's that.

@cherryarrow said that the original novel's ending made her feel "empty". I agree, but it's also a good kind of empty?

It makes you ponder on what anyone could have done in that situation. Ruoxi was not wrong for wanting to survive or to live with the man she ultimately loved, but in all of her attempts to live what she thought was the best life for her, she ended up being the cause of everything she wanted to prevent. We have the view of an omnipresent narrator, so it's easy for us to say "oh, I wouldn't have done that". But if you are Ruoxi, if you're Su, what would you do?

What I really liked about the original ending was how it demonstrated its central theme beautifully: you cannot best history. If you try to deny it its path, it will destroy you instead.

Here's to hoping MLSHR will somehow be able to pull a magic rabbit out of its hat at the eleventh hour and actually deliver a good ending in line with its source. Now that'd be magical.

I loved the Chinese version's ending too as well as the central theme of "making decisions" throughout the show. It does make you think, what would you do in such a situation if you know that your decisions actually has huge consequences for everyone involved? I loved that so much about the chinese version.

I actually have a strong feeling that the K-version will divert from the original's ending - which was a relatively sad one. K-dramas don't seem to like to entertain the realistic possibility that some things in life just don't have happy endings. It's happy endings all the time for most characters in K-dramas =.= so i think they might do the same here and opt for a relatively happier ending compared to the C-version.

Yeah it does seem like it doesn't it? I was wondering how they would write up haesoo leaving the palace with the 14th prince but now it's happened!

the happiest ending for haesoo (and for me) would be that she leaves for good. leave everyone behind and forget them and just marry jung. he's in love with her anyway.

Yeah what I think Tong Hua did beautifully was to highlight how the faults of being human make us think that we can supersede the effects of history when it is really otherwise. Ruoxi was being completely understandable when she warned Yinsi to be wary of Yinzhen--she still had residual feelings for him then and simply wanted him to survive. But it was precisely because of this want that he ultimately did not--if she'd just said nothing, would Yinsi have survived in the end? We don't know. But what we do know is that by wanting to rewrite a certain part of history, Ruoxi doomed Yinsi to the fate he was assigned to anyway.

It's the same for Su here--she wants to make So the non-bloodthirsty version of Gwangjong, but he already is. He already is Gwangjong, he will do what he needs to as emperor, and by trying to prevent that she's only going to make it gain momentum and she's going to die. I don't think MLSHR made history/fate as prominent as it was in the original novel, which is a pity. I wish they'd done that.

You're right that they'll probably make it a happy ending, probably like the C-drama where she goes back to the present and meets a reincarnation of So or something. It's a HEA, great for all of us shipping So/Su, but it also defeats the purpose of the original's central theme. Ah well.

Right! I think by attempting to change history, ruoxi/haesoo realised that she actually made everything worst. you really said it best: "you cannot best history. If you try to deny it its path, it will destroy you instead."

I think although they we are moving into haesoo leaving the palace and getting together with the 14th, i still feel ultimately they will follow the C-drama too, make so/su meet in the present, recognise each other or whatever and live happily ever after. I can totally see that happening in a K-drama, still really curious to see how they will end it!

I was seriously hoping that Su would show some more intelligence. She travelled back in time...is there for years now but she is still unbelievably naive. How is it possible that she never realised that her so called friend is the puppet of the last evil prince?

Wook is like a kid having a tantrum because his fav toy was taken by his older brother. Same for Jung...how can he be angry with So when Yo is the one that used Eun for shooting practice?

And what about the doctor with his diagnosis? Looks like you either get mercury poisoning or a heart problem when dealing with this family. :(

I do hope So will show some more intelligence in the last episodes. He always seemed to be the smartest one in the family. He did not grew up in the palace so he should be able to rule/behave in a different way than his predecessors. Or at least that is my hope. I wish this version has a different ending than the Chinese drama. I do not want to see the same happening again. The writers did follow Korean history up to now (more or less) so can they not just come up with some surprise ending? They are supposed to take a creative licence to history, right?

Evil prince needs to pay for his sins...so I guess his involvement in Mo's death will come to light somehow...

This seems like such a squandered opportunity. Writers - what were you thinking? I read this somewhere - was it on Dramabeans? - that there didn't seem to be a point to making Su a time traveler because she doesn't seem to be bringing a modern sensibility to the situation. This was the perfect opportunity to say - "hey buddy - 'I'll be your light, your match, your burning flame' but while you're off running the country - I gotta have something to do so I'm heading back to the Damiwon during the day. See you this evening and you can tell me your troubles then."

One of the things I liked so much about Faith was that the Doctor was still a modern woman with her own work and own self even though she learned to adapt to the times and loved Choi Young with all her heart.

Instead So turns on the cute asking for favors and being subservient instead of spunky. You might as well title this "How to Lose a King in 30 days". So didn't love you because you were exactly like every other court lady in the palace! Stand up for yourself woman! No one's a bigger sucker for romantic love than I am, but here was a chance to make her a strong partner - even if not a queen - instead of a pillow to rest on when So gets around to remembering that she's there. I'm not surprised that So said "well, you'll have babies and that's all you'll need to keep you busy" he's not the freaking time traveler. You can't be true to someone else, if you aren't true to yourself, and with Su, there's no self there!!!!

I really think Hong Jong Hyun has improved a lot in his acting! I watched him in White Christmas and Vampire Idol. He was raw but likable then and I'm glad he managed to pull off the scene when Yo died. I disagree that Yo's character wasn't developed. It was just done too unevenly because Yo isn't a main character. Yo was a smug arrogant bastard that realised too late that he was being used by his mother. His worth was always judged by his mother based on his ability to get to the throne. And when he finally got on the throne, he realised his mother (or really anyone) never cared about him and he didn't matter once he became useless. In the end, he realised he was not too different from So in the beginning whom he used to despise.

So Hae Soo didn’t go to So because she realized that she loves him, no, because he was honest, he told her that he wants the throne and her, he didn’t want to lose both, ahhh and confessed to her that he is, indeed, greedy…seriously?, just for that?...wow...and she had no other option than try and understand him...what is the logic of that?, then, why she not tried to understand Wook?, she didn’t even try, maybe some therapy sessions with him...he could tell the truth...that he is greedy too, problem solved, they were back in the game. Everything was because he didn’t confess his ambition and So did?...oh man...everything is so clear now...the logic of these characters is just bizarre.

And Wook's change was the most useless in the world, didn't help for the story, he changed for nothing, besides, he not even has appeared in the eps, so, why his change?, it was better if he just had gone to a better place, and disappeared from the story, it didn't matter, at least we remember him as the sweet boy he was at first. I feel sorry for him, nothing goes well for him and his family sucks...I wanna hug him a lot, a loootttttttt… what a waste of character really...

To sum it up this episode could be called "Wang So's No Good Terrible Rotten Bad Day (weeks?)-A continuation of the saga of his No Good Terrible Rotten Bad Life".

Poor So. Can't catch a break. And neither can Su apparently. This couple, I swear. The most bad luck laden pair in Kdrama land I've ever seen, what with Kings dropping dead (or about to) left and right at Su's feet and So's general reputation as bad luck from when he was like..4, the poor baby.

I watched the SBS version without subs and since I didn't know the will was blank, I legitimately thought both Su AND So had seen that Jung was named the successor and had just gone ahead and proclaimed So the King anyway. I was actually cheering at that point because HAHA that's right a couple that steals the throne together stays together? (gulp) And even after we realized it was blank...well..essentially they DID do that...just not on purpose, since that throne was always meant to be So's anyway?

I loved all the little cute couple scenes too. The level of cute is most likely inversely related to the level of pain that is to come, so we're in for a doozy here.

This show is like a really bad relationship.

Every time I think we're really going to break up (aka stop watching it), there's a So/Su moment slipped in where I'm like MAN, Lee Jun Ki is a boss with his intensity... I melt... I shed a tear...

and then BAM another a$$hole moment, either by the show (production, editing) or So's character or someone else. Then I'm like alright, we're REALLY going to break up now. It's not worth it! It's not worth the frustration!

It's frustrating precisely because it had so much promise. That's what kept me coming back and feeling all the feels - I do like the costumes. I think they're lovely. I don't even have much to criticize the acting with. Considering it started out with a large cast, I think the acting was done pretty well. So the show had character, lots of it.

Knowing someone (the show) is a good person and had potential but also realizing, the timing is off. I think I'm finally done now - I'm going to wait for recaps of the final episodes instead of watching and then go back and only watch the good moments...

Reminiscing over memories already :/ Like the batboy moment... This is what I mean by potential!!! I don't remember the last time a scene stuck out in my mind for a sageuk - the way it was handled cinematography-wise, the costume, the acting... sigh.

You almost had it show... and you almost had me... but it's time to say goodbye T_T You played with my heart for too long :(

While I know that this show was based on another drama, I don't see the point of time travel. The only thing Su brought to the past was her makeup skills. Other than that, the topic is totally dropped. Couldn't the character just have taken a wrong turn, fainted, and gotten amnesia upon mistakenly seeing all the handsome princes? I know I would have.
