Shopping King Louis: Episode 8

Growing pains are rough, especially when you have no past to speak of. But it’s time for Louis to grow up, and begin to be the man he instinctively longs to be. That will involve taking on a lot of new experiences, but he can do it with the people he loves by his side. He may not know who he used to be, but that hardly matters when he’s finally discovering who he’s meant to be.

EPISODE 8: “Be My Baby”

We back up to the previous morning, when Louis petulantly insists on riding to work with Joong-won and Bok-shil. He has to stop when they get to work, and he watches Bok-shil go inside with Joong-won. He takes the bus home alone, not feeling any better.

He takes In-sung out shopping and wonders what he used to do for work before he lost his memory. He tells In-sung that he suddenly wanted to go to work this morning, and In-sung says that as a “job seeker,” he knows how Louis feels. Louis thinks to himself that he wants to be a better person: “Then, I’ll tell her.”

Ma-ri uses In-sung’s crush on her learn that Bok-shil is staying with Joong-won, and that Joong-won likes her. In-sung mentions that a guy named Louis is staying with Bok-shil at Joong-won’s place, and that he’s really sweet but kind of strange.

Ma-ri calls her dad the moment she’s alone to tell him that Louis is at Joong-won’s, and Director Baek tells her to leave everything to him. He goes straight to Joong-won’s home and rings the doorbell, waking the whole house.

When Joong-won sees his boss at the door he sends Bok-shil and Louis to hide in his office. Bok-shil thinks to grab their shoes from the entryway and ushers Louis into the office, shutting the blinds. Joong-won lets Director Baek in, and he peers around to see if anyone else is here.

Louis loudly asks Bok-shil a question, and she claps her hand over his mouth to shush him. He drops their shoes and Director Baek hears the clatter, but Joong-won insists he lives alone.

There’s another noise and Director Baek pushes his way into the office, but whew, the room looks empty. Baek apologizes for being twitchy, explaining that he’s heard rumors that make him nervous, but then he notices Bok-shil’s blankets on the couch. Oops. Joong-won stammers that he sometimes naps in here while he’s working.

Director Baek sits down at the desk, and we see that Bok-shil and Louis are hiding under it, and are now only inches from discovery. Director Baek asks Joong-won about the rumors that he’s living with Bok-shil, but says that he doesn’t believe Joong-won would hire a woman under false pretenses.

Joong-won sticks up for Bok-shil, saying that he believes she’ll be a great merchandiser. He tells Director Baek not to accuse him of having ulterior motives, and Director Baek agrees that Joong-won is highly trustworthy. But he warns him about letting the rumors go unaddressed, or his image could be destroyed.

Under the desk, Bok-shil’s eyes go wide when Director Baek asks Joong-won if he’d like to send her to the Shanghai branch. Joong-won is too surprised to say anything, so Director Baek asks him to think about it. As he leaves, he looks back at the house with a sly grin.

Bok-shil and Louis apologize to Joong-won for putting him in a bad position at work, prepared to leave and go back home. But Joong-won stops them and says that he’s fine, rumors or no. He tells them to stay, and to stop being so dramatic. Bok-shil starts to insist, but Louis thanks him for letting them stay. But he takes the opportunity to ask Joong-won if he likes Bok-shil as a woman, and Joong-won doesn’t answer for several moments.

He remembers how the two of them looked at each other after Louis burnt his hand saving his coin from the grill, and after a glance in Bok-shil’s direction, he finally says, “Of course not.” Louis also asks if he’s going to send Bok-shil to Shanghai, but Joong-won says no to that too, and tells them to stop worrying and go back to bed.

Back home, Director Baek explains his plan to Ma-ri — if Bok-shil is sent to Shanghai, Louis will go with her, and they can stop worrying about the family finding him. All they have to do is make sure Louis isn’t found before the company shares transfer into their hands.

Ma-ri brings up Louis’s lack of an ID and the fact that Bok-shil won’t be keen to leave the country, since she still hasn’t found her brother. Director Baek tells Ma-ri to inform Bok-shil of her brother’s death (they believe he died in the crash), so she won’t want to stay in the country any longer.

Butler Kim and Jung-ran are shockingly close to finding Louis, having posted his photo online and gotten some leads. They find the flower shop where Louis bought the rose for Bok-shil, and when told that Louis bought an orange rose, Butler Kim remembers a time when Louis had told him that orange roses signify first love. Louis had wondered if he would ever fall in love, and decided that when he does, he’ll give the girl he loves one perfect orange rose. Oh, swoon.

Butler Kim knows that the orange rose means it was certainly Louis, and the shop owner tells them that Louis had said he was going to give the rose to the woman he lives with. Jung-ran thinks that Louis wouldn’t be living with a woman, nor would he have paid in coins, but Butler Kim is sure it’s him.

Louis and In-sung are back at the street vendor looking at clothing, and one sweatshirt calls out to Louis. He tells In-sung that he literally hears quality items calling his name, and In-sung quips that Louis is mentally ill, ha. Louis pays for the shirt, and they move on.

Louis wonders why the killer hasn’t been caught yet after he gave the cops such a big clue regarding the shoes. But they’re closer than he thinks — Detective Joo-hyuk learns the address of the suspect, and the cops move out to make the arrest.

At the office, Joong-won’s team is getting ready for Black Friday, and the office is full of samples. Joong-won orders the place cleaned up, but Bok-shil reports that the part-time helper they hired can’t make it. Joong-won says that he’ll find someone else, and rushes off.

Hot on Louis’s tail, Butler Kim’s next lead is the vendor who sold Louis the sweatshirt. He says that Louis shops there often and always pays with coins, and Jung-ran wonders if he’s earning money by begging. They learn that Louis was there less than twenty minutes ago, and run off after him.

They get within mere feet of Louis on the crowded street, but just as they’re about to see him, Butler Kim is knocked down by a pedestrian. Jung-ran screeches at the guy, but Butler Kim pulls her away to remind her of their mission. Something about Jung-ran’s expression stops him, and his cyborg-like brain analyzes her face and determines that she’s not angry, but worried about him. He wonders why she cares so much.

Louis gets a call that he’s landed a part-time job for the day at Goldline, and he makes straight for Joong-won’s closet, picking out a suit and a pair of shoes. He checks himself out in the mirror, liking what he sees, and with his trademark “Perfect!” he heads to his first day at work.

He struts into the Goldline office like he owns the place (HA), making the entire team wonder who he is. When he hears that both Joong-won and Bok-shil are out, he casually orders a cup of his favorite instant coffee, and skips off to wait in Joong-won’s office.

Joong-won is furious to see Louis wearing his clothes and grabs his lapels, but Louis’s pointed look reminds him that the whole office is watching. Joong-won backs off and introduces Louis as the new part-timer, and everyone gasps, having thought he was someone important.

When asked his family name, Louis thinks fast and says it’s Wang, which means “king.” Bok-shil’s amused snicker earns a hilarious glare from Louis. Team member Hye-joo suddenly remembers seeing Louis holding Bok-shil’s hand a while back, and she blurts out that he’s Bok-shil’s boyfriend.

Louis smirks, pleased, and says he’s even more than a boyfriend. He starts to say they live together, and Bok-shil practically teleports across the room to cover his big fat mouth. She explains that he’s just helping her look for her brother.

Team member Do-jin recognizes Joong-won’s suit, and this time Joong-won covers Louis’s mouth when he starts to say they live together. He orders everyone back to work, but they’re distracted when Mr. Lee brings Louis his coffee. Mr. Lee simpers like he’s serving a celebrity, and the poor man’s knees buckle when he learns that he just served the part-timer.

The team is curious about Louis and pepper him with questions, but Joong-won sends them away grouchily. He gives Louis the job of organizing the samples, then seems annoyed when Louis doesn’t appear worried by the task.

Ma-ri hasn’t met the new guy yet, and she brings more samples to the storage room where he’s working. He turns to face her and they both have a moment of recognition, then Ma-ri accidentally knocks a stack of boxes over onto him. She flees the room, leaving Louis huddled under a mountain of samples.

Ma-ri runs screaming into her father’s office, and tells Director Baek that Louis is at the Goldline office right now. She guesses he’s here for the part-time job, and Director Baek decides they have to get rid of Bok-shil, and thus Louis, immediately.

When Louis is finally rescued from underneath the sample boxes, he tells the team that a familiar-seeming woman attacked him. He suddenly remembers that she’s the one who nearly ran over him, and the team can’t think of who it may have been.

Hye-joo tells her teammate Mi-young that she was jealous of Bok-shil for having such a handsome boyfriend, but now he seems a little weird. Louis overhears them wondering where they’ve seen him before, and pokes his head between them, hoping for a clue to his identity. But the movement reminds them of their first time seeing him, when he’d been filthy and begging for their coffee, and they recall him as “that pervert,” hee.

Bok-shil makes it back to the office with more samples and finds Louis pouting that he got hit with boxes. Upset, he grumbles that she’s the only one who believes what he says. Bok-shil says that he only needs one person to believe him, and Louis gives her a big beautiful smile when she says that that person is herself.

When confronted by Mr. Lee and Do-jin, Ma-ri denies that she hit Louis with her car, and lies that she hasn’t even met him yet. Do-jin falls for it, but Mr. Lee gives her a suspicious side-eye. Ma-ri creeps back to the office and tries to eavesdrop on Louis and Bok-shil, and she nearly has a heart attack when Joong-won asks what she’s doing.

In-sung hears that the police have caught the suspect who attacked the man in Bok-shil and Louis’s apartment, and he watches the news with his mother. They learn that the killer was identified by a shoe-print left in some powder on the apartment floor, and Mom wonders what it was since Bok-shil keeps the place so clean.

We go back to that night, and we finally see exactly what happened. Louis had been outside practicing with his new lightsaber (ha, that was his “safety equipment?”) while he waited for Bok-shil to come home, still stiff and sore from his one day of work.

He’d gone inside and made a cup of instant coffee with the lightsaber tucked under his arm, but when he’d turned to get the hot water, the lightsaber knocked the cup of powder onto the floor. He’d done the exact same thing a second time, knocking a second cup to the floor, before getting a clue and putting down the lightsaber. PFFT.

Louis had gone to the bus stop to wait for Bok-shil, leaving the floor covered in powdered coffee. Scarface had crept into their apartment to look around, and it was him who was attacked. The killer had left his footprint in the powdered coffee, and it was Louis’s knowledge of shoes that led to his arrest. Scarface is still in a coma, and the detectives are trying to discover exactly who he is and why he was there that night. Detective Joo-hyuk asks his chief to give Louis the reward money for catching the killer, since they couldn’t have caught the guy without him, and the chief says he’ll look into a partial reward.

Butler Kim and Jung-ran’s next few leads are duds, and the PD of the TV show that was helping them look for Louis says that they’re taking the info off the website. Jung-ran thinks it’s time to stop — she believes Louis is dead.

Jung-ran calls Director Baek to report that the man they saw on television wasn’t Louis, and she’s caught by Butler Kim. Director Baek calls his wife Jae-sook, who’s still in Busan, to tell her to bring Grandma up to Seoul.

Butler Kim asks Jung-ran who she keeps calling, and she lies that it’s just a friend. She’s a terrible liar, and Butler Kim asks again who she’s reporting to, but she just blows up at him and runs away. He wonders if she’s talking to a boyfriend.

The Goldline team come back to the office after dinner, and they each find a note on their desk from Louis. The notes award them stars, with comments like “You talk too much” or “I only like your sense of style,” HAHA. Mr. Lee likes his note, which gives him five stars and says that he’s kind. Awww, he’s so happy.

Do-jin sees another note from Louis, saying that he’s picked out which products they should promote. They scoff that a part-timer would know anything about their work, until they look at the products and realize that Louis has a gift. Joong-won also find a note on his desk which we don’t see, but it makes him snarl.

Ma-ri takes Bok-shil to a coffee shop to put her dad’s plan into effect, and she starts by asking Bok-shil why she lied about her relationship with Joong-won. Bok-shil asks her not to tell anyone else, since she’s moving out today anyway, and Ma-ri nastily says to stop inconveniencing people.

She brings up her other reason for coming here, intending to tell Bok-shil that her brother is dead. But before she can say anything Louis knocks on the window, and Ma-ri scurries to hide before he can see her. She holds a tray in front of her face and tries to slink past him, but Bok-shil calls Ma-ri “Team Leader” so he keeps cutting her off, trying to introduce himself. HAHA, seeing Ma-ri scuttling around the coffee shop holding a tray in front of her face is just hysterical.

Butler Kim apologizes to Grandma when she gets to Seoul, deeply sorry that he couldn’t find Louis for her. She thanks them for trying, and she asks after Director Baek and Ma-ri.

They’re on their way, though Ma-ri doesn’t really want to go. Her dad says that they’re finalizing the shares transfer tomorrow, and Ma-ri worries about leaving Louis adrift like this. Director Baek says to leave it all up to him and just pretend not to know anything in front of Grandma.

Louis is thrilled to get his reward money for helping catch the killer, and tells Detective Joo-hyuk that he plans to spend it all on Bok-shil. Meanwhile Bok-shil lugs their belongings out of Joong-won’s place, and she thanks him for letting them live here. He says she can always stay, but she says that won’t be necessary, and also informs him that she won’t be going to the Shanghai branch.

Joong-won says that he doesn’t want her to go either, and he looks sad for just a moment. But he’s quickly back to himself, sternly saying that she has too much to learn and she’ll never escape his training program. With one last warning for Bok-shil to stay focused on work, Joong-won sends her home.

Louis meets Bok-shil on the steps, and takes all of their bags to carry the rest of the way. She asks if he feels okay, and he says she can put more pain patches on for him, and they head home together.

They’re surprised to find In-sung’s mom inside, just finishing cleaning the place. She sweetly says there’s nothing better than to come home to a clean house, and Louis gratefully flops in her lap like a big puppy. In-sung runs in yelling, “That’s my mom!” and kicks Louis away, and they fight over her lap until she finally grabs them both affectionately by the hair. Aw, this family.

Louis orders what looks like every possible kind of late-night delivery food for his own little family, and In-sung is convinced again that he comes from a rich family the way he spends money. In-sung’s mom says that he’s finally growing up, spending his own hard-earned money on them, and Louis says that the can’t be incompetent forever. He introduces himself formally as Shopping King Louis, and gets teased for his ego, hee.

Joong-won glares at the surprise fried chicken Louis sent him, having no intention of eating it in the middle of the night, and he aggressively tells the chicken so. Next thing you know he’s chowing down like he hasn’t eaten in days, complaining the whole time about the extra calories.

Louis and Bok-shil are delighted to be home, though Louis says that it’s being alone with Bok-shil that makes him happy. She stares at him with big wide eyes and he suddenly realizes what he said, and backtracks to say that he’s happy she’ll only be cooking for him. Aww, Bok-shil’s face falls.

Louis says that it upset him the way Director Baek picked on her, so he decides she can quit her job and they’ll open a shopping mall. He thinks he’d be good at that. Bok-shil says that of course she believes in him, but she still has a lot to learn, and he sulks that she’s choosing Joong-won over him.

He asks what she wants to do most, so that he can make it happen. She wants to see the ocean, so the next day they take a trip to a beach. Louis buys Bok-shil some cotton candy from a vendor, and they dance in the sand to a radio playing “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes.

Louis runs into the water and splashes Bok-shil, and she loses a shoe in the waves. She sends him in to retrieve it, which he does, then when she says the shoes were a gift from Joong-won, he hurls it into deeper water. That starts a more serious splash fight, and they both end up soaking wet and having the time of their lives.

There’s a small moment that passes between them when they’re helping squeeze the ocean water out of each other’s clothes, and their bodies are close and their faces even closer. But the moment passes, and when Bok-shil pouts that she only has one shoe, Louis carries her on his back up the beach.

He takes Bok-shil shopping for a new pair of shoes, but when she says that her grandmother said that giving shoes meant that you’d eventually say goodbye to that person, he refuses to pay for them, ha. But she doesn’t have any money, so he pays, though he’s not happy about it (and now I’m worried, too).

Detective Joo-hyuk goes to the Hong Franc bookstore, and this time he sees Jae-sook inside. She looks up as he walks in, and stares at the beautiful backlit man who looks like something out of a fairytale. Then he says he’s a cop, and reality screeches back.

He asks if she has one of the music boxes that Gold Department Store made for its thirtieth anniversary, and she points out the small penguin statue. Next he asks if she knows the name Louis, but we don’t hear her answer.

Louis and Bok-shil walk past a bookstore carrying foreign books, and Louis picks one up and starts reading. It takes a second for them to realize he’s reading in Japanese, and Louis freezes in surprise. He grabs a book in Spanish and reads it just as easily, and German too. Ha, Louis is all, I’m so cool!

He pulls out his phone for Bok-shil to record his new trick, and goes through several more books, tossing the camera triumphant looks after each one. He picks up another one whose title, In Search of Lost Time, makes him pause. He says it reminds him of his current situation, and he grows serious.

He tells Bok-shil that he wants to get his memory back, but that he’s also very happy with his life the way it is in the present. He says shyly that his heart feels joyful, and while he’s still being filmed, Bok-shil asks what his most memorable moment of his new life has been.

Louis thinks of all the time he’s spent waiting for Bok-shil — at home, on the street, at the bus stop. He recalls the moments when his waiting paid off, when he’d see Bok-shil coming home, and he’d fill up with happiness. He tells her that his best moments were the ones he spent waiting for her.

Bok-shil looks at Louis and he smiles, and he takes the phone and points it at her and asks the same question. Bok-shil’s answer is simple: “Right now.”

Louis just looks at her, not saying a word, and Bok-shil starts to grow nervous. He steps forward, and in a low voice he asks, “What should I do?” She asks if he feels sick, but he just steps forward, putting a hand on her arm to stop her from backing away.

Louis lowers his head slowly, so slowly, until finally their lips touch. His hand slides down to entwine their fingers together, as they share their first kiss.

COMMENTS

What an absolutely perfect, beautiful moment. Usually by the time the leading couple in a drama kisses, we’ve been feeling so much unresolved tension that it’s like a coil being tightened and finally let loose. But here it just feels like Louis and Bok-shil have been slowly moving towards each other for a long time, and it was just the right time for them to express their feelings, without pressure or anxiety. Not that they have no tension, it’s just that they’re so comfortable in their relationship, there’s been no rush to make things physical. They may not have discussed it, but it’s clear to anyone who sees them that they’ve loved each other since very early on in their friendship. So rather than feeling like they have to kiss to prove it, this kiss just feels like it was waiting for its proper time.

Ma-ri is just completely cracking me up. I still don’t know exactly what her motives are — does she want to inherit Gold Group? Does she have her eye on Joong-won? Both? — but whatever they are, she’s just so not-scary that I actually enjoy watching her try to manipulate everyone and totally fail. She’s almost an anti-villain, in that her ends are at odds with our protagonists, but every time she attempts to be all eeevil, she just ends up making herself look ridiculous. It’s highly entertaining to see her flail and get frustrated whenever her plans are foiled, and I’m loving every minute of it.

Not that her father is any better of a schemer — sending Bok-shil to Shanghai? Seriously, that’s his big nefarious plan to get rid of Louis? I’m starting to wonder if he actually did plan Louis’s accident, because he just doesn’t seem capable of killing anyone, even indirectly. We’re still very much in the dark in regards to the details of those events, like how Louis ended up in Bok-nam’s clothes and who exactly died in the crash that everyone thinks killed Louis. We do know that Director Baek let him drive alone when he wasn’t supposed to, and that he called Scarface to do… something… but that’s all we know for sure. We have a lot of theories and speculation, but I’m getting very eager to know what Director Baek’s plan was. Because he’s known for some time now that Louis is still alive and yet his whole plan is “send Bok-shil to Shanghai and Louis will follow her.” Something doesn’t add up.

I’m happy to see Louis starting to mature, and it was interesting that he felt so strongly about getting a job when he’s never had one in his life. It’s a reminder that the old Louis wasn’t so content in his sheltered, though luxurious, life. He’d longed to be able to control his own actions, unable to even open a window in the rain because of his grandmother’s fear of losing him. The new Louis still feels that discontent, and wants to have a reason for getting up in the morning. I think that Bok-shil (or rather, wanting to be a good man for her) has something to do with that, but the majority of it is just Louis’s subconscious longing to find a purpose in his life.

And while I’m happy to see Louis growing up, making a new little family, and finding love with Bok-shil, there’s a part of me that is almost ready for him to find his real family and get his old life back. Not because I want him to lose what he has now, but because I think that Louis will never be fully happy without knowing where he comes from. A couple of weeks ago I would have said that it would be okay if he never got his memory back and just lived with Bok-shil forever, but now I think Louis is feeling that his old life was missing something, and that there’s something deep inside him that wants to get his memory back so that he can discover what it was. So now I want him to remember himself, and find a way to merge his two half-lives into one fulfilling whole.

I might have said aw too many times in this episode, they are just too cute. But what really warms my heart is Louis’ growth and wanting to be a better person because of her. He suddenly wants to go to work because he spends so much time waiting for her all day, and because she went to work. I just love everything about this episode, and it’s so in tune with his personality that even with amnesia, he still manages to make people cater to him. I wonder how many stars Joong Won got? Haha. I even like his interactions with Louis, it’s like he can’t help but like the guy. And that kiss in the end though, following their confession of memorable moments, and how cute Louis is uncertain of what to do next, but just goes for it. Love King Louis! Love Seo In Guk! As far as the pending separation, memory coming back, it’ll be interesting to see how Louis will incorporate his new with his old life, because as he mentioned, he’s really quite happy with his new life, and there’s something about watching Louis adapt to this new world. He may not be rich, but he’s gained family and friends, and one person who believes in him. Isn’t that all we really want in life though? Just that one person who believes [in] you when nobody else would?

About having a person who believes in him and isnt that we all really want?
It might be the truest, the most realistic comment, line i have ever heard in korean romantic drama. Its swoony because its so real.

This drama is a lighting bolt out of nowhere for me because of the cute, very charming story of Bok-Shil, Louis. They have the most effortless, natural chemistry i have seen for a long time in rom com. It doesnt matter the chabeol story, villain of Director Baek is very lame, silly.

Plus, can we finally talk about the kiss that the directors made us wait for almost 2 weeks! Thank god they didn't delay it for another episode.. I can see that a little angst is gonna appear in the near future (what with the foreshadowing of sandals as gifts) but I am sure that this show will still give us squee worthy moments.

Oh and the simple declarations of memorable moments from both Louie and Bok Shil were so goosebumps- inducing. Sometimes, "I love yous" are just not required. Just showing how the other person is the most important one in their lives is enough. I hope they keep trusting and depending on each other in the future like this.

I am thinking the ratings were over 10 last week cause everyone was tuning in to see the kiss, and were conned, thus they dropped a little bit in this episode. But I hope people will be back when they see they will not be conned forever

Yayee! Did SIG really promise to dress up as Shiba Inu if the show achieved more than 10% ratings, or was that just a statement made in passing?

I wholeheartedly dislike the use of the shoe gift foreshadowing but I want to trust that this drama is better than just separating our couple!!

I definitely agree that "I love you"s are not always necessary.
When Louis tells BokShil about how he could only eat her food and how he wants her to cook for her, I can't help but think back to something from a WongFu video from a while ago. It was about how asian parents show their love for their children by asking if they ate or if they're hungry. It's sort of a reverse situation for Louis but I think it runs along the same course. Louis and BokShil depend on each other and these simple moments just show how much they truly care for each other. As light as this drama is, we can't help but admit how deep some of these moments really are :)

Oh that is a great interpretation. We all know food is related to love in everyday scenario so Louie asking Bok Shil to only cook for him is a way of asking her to love him only (however retrogressive and patriarchal a step like that might be).

"As light as this drama is, we can’t help but admit how deep some of these moments really are"- So true!

This show should come with the following warning:

WARNING: The SUGAR content of this drama may cause your pancreas to instantaneously explode!

The on screen chemistry between the central characters is almost immeasurable. Add in three very talented supporting actors - cleaning ajumma, freeloader chingu, Oska - and you can make a drama with mediocre writing and directing a compelling watch. The person in charge of casting deserves a big bonus for their hard work.

When Louis and Bok-Sil are on screen there is pure and innocent magic. When Louis and Oska interact there is an odd kind of bromance. Oska is reluctantly, helping Louis to grow up as only an older brother or mentor could. Oska has helped Louis to truly understand how special Bok-Sil is. Unfortunately, for Oska, Louis more often gets the better of him. The best part is that both Louis and Bok-Sil are also responsible for Oska experiencing character growth.

Cleaning ajumma and freeloader chingu have become a reliable source of tough love. Ajumma scolds Louis as only a mother can. Grandma has always showed Louis love, but has also always been unable to scold him. Louis has needed a good scolding for a long time. Ajumma has that job handled. Everyone needs a best friend, someone who is as likely to get you into trouble as get you out of it. He will never win a “good citizen” award, but he has got Louis’s back and that is what really counts.

I think that it is important to illustrate just how mediocre the writing is. The three girl hooligans, are the de facto antagonists of this drama. They have been the most effective villains. They successfully assaulted, robbed and extorted money from Louis and Bok-Sil. The evil CEO has only successfully gossiped about Bok-Sil. To his credit it was nasty gossip. The absolute funniest thing is that Louis has even vowed to get back the extorted monies from these teenage female master criminals.

Oooh...I see the writing in a completely different way. This show is intentionally keeping characters within an archetype and doing so quite simplistically. Because its intention isn't to develop a deep, complex or completely novel storyline. Instead it's employing simplified tropes and a boatload of meta to create charming characters within a story that's both funny and a heartwarming. They intentionally want you to take absolutely everything at face value.

From the very first episode I thought that the show was saying: 'I'm not going to ask you to think too deeply. Just come along for the ride. We're going to have some sweet moments and a whole lot of fun.'

I definitely agree yet disagree with you. Using your words, while the intention isn't to "develop a deep, complex, or completely novel storyline", I believe it's even more difficult to use drama "tropes and a boatload of meta to create charming character within a story that's both funny and heartwarming."

Although it's still too early to say that this drama has good writing from start to finish, I've witnessed this as a drama with characters I'm fully invested in and actually come to appreciate all the tropes and breaking of the tropes. It is a sweet and light drama with dashes of deepness and character growth in all aspects that is hard to dismiss as simply sweet and fun writing.

Required fields are marked *

Great point. It does take a lot of skill to effectively employ tropes and meta. What I was really referring to is the audience experience. You're right, it's good to clarify.

What strikes me about the way it's done here is that none of it requires a lot of effort for the audience to understand. And the way it's being done is always in sync with the tone and feel of the rest of the story.

Here they've used cinderella, a chaebol, a Candy character (though an emotional Candy, not a financial one), the truck of doom, amnesia, scheming company executives, a more competent romantic rival, unemployment, a beach scene where romance blooms, etc. (Probably more, those are just off the top of my head.) One trope among many doesn't stand out. And from a tonal perspective they've kept it all fairly lighthearted and uncomplicated. So the viewing experience seems simple.

If -- on one hand -- they were asking us to take one trope seriously, but to take others in a lighthearted way, it'd feel clunky. Like, if they were creating a lot of storyline conflict around his amnesia and the pain his grandma feels, but asking us to overlook keystone cop villains, it'd be weird. But his grandma keeps calling him "my precious" like a ring she keeps locked in a jewelry box. And she's surrounded by the loyal butler and the wife who constantly yet unintentionally undermines her husband's schemes. So we don't get dragged down by that storyline because we know it's a matter of time before it all gets worked out. Likewise, the amnesia seems to be just a simple device to let Louis find himself and get rooted in a found-family. And do it in a bumbling, innocent and natural way that makes it organic to his character. So now that it's rooted, we won't need to get caught up in angst if/when they introduce the trope of a forced separation. And we won't get emotionally caught up in the president's schemes to strip Louis of his wealth, because we know a) he's so bumbling and b) Louis can live life quite happily without the wealth. And the romantic rival turns out to be a curmudgeon who realizes the age gap and all-around decent guy. (Just love all that sageuk-minister throat clearing he does.)

So it's an easy peasey show to watch. Though, to your point, you're right. Not at all simple to achieve.

True. Plus with Gidget's post up there, the drama now resembles a children's book to me. the story is often straightforward, the conflicts are almost given on the get-go, but it comes with boatloads of moral lessons. It's as if the drama is pinning down the "classic kdrama" structure, except we don't know where the post-angst era will take us yet. So dear Louie, I'm going to keep the stars close to my chest for now but i'm really enjoying it this far.

Note: i'm pretty sure the classics are the hardest to write so if this goes well, kudos to the writer for attempting to tap at a "classic" kdrama structure.

These two puppies are just too cute! Their innocence and lack of worldliness, which should be a hindrance in everyday life, strangely becomes their strength as the kind souls around them extend a helping hand. Plus they develop a strong bond with each other to insulate themselves from those seeking to take advantage of them.

I can't remember the last time I've watched such a light and joyful rom-com with such a delightful couple. Have I been missing out and watching too many kdramas with angsty couples and melo plots?? I was just telling my cousin that the reason we are son in love with Louie is because he has all the qualities that I want in a life partner- adorable, caring and kind- someone who would love only you. I know he is a pain in ass because he doesn't do any work but he is slowly learning and he has already changed a lot!

That beach scene was just so serene- just innocence personified. And they danced so cutely! I did get flashes of the 1988 scene between Taek and Deok Seon (which was also quite cute) but this one was pure love, while that one seemed to be more about friendship.

@gidget

You are right on about the happy place!
I wanted to comment just that if nobody else did.

This is like my safety bubble, sanctuary in a long week. Them being just together is adorable and that beach scene will be my kdrama happy moment to come back to on a depressed day.

And that kiss ! What a beautiful beautiful first kiss! For both. I don't remember the last time I felt the pang of first kiss in a kdrama. Its usually for sake of kissing, or lips pressed together with angles and musical scores or epic sexy kisses( which I love too) But this! The leading up to it. Them sharing what their best moment was, and there was nothing else to do but seal it all with a kiss.
The way Louis was firm but hesitant, I forgot for a moment it was Seo In Gook who is a master kisser. I saw a man child trying out his first kiss with a lot of nervousness. And that holding hands - it felt natural. It did not feel like a romantic move more as I need to hold her hand now.

It was just perfect! I know its a drama, but watching two adorable sheltered kids come out into real world, finding their place there - just them having their first kiss puts the biggest smile on my face in middle a very bad week!/They are like unicorns!

They are my kdrama happy couple and this is my kdrama happy kiss.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Combined with that deep voice, I think it's a rhetorical question. ;-)

0

To explain further along with Gidget's explanation that it's a rhetorical question, the way that Louis says that line has the feel of:

"There's this feeling I have and I don't know what to do with it so what should I do."

But really is like: "I-have-to-do-something-with-this-feeling-I-have-and-I-want-to-kiss-you-but-I-don't-know-if-I-should-but-I-think-I'm-going-to-go-for-it-so-I'm-letting-you-know-that-something's-going-to-happen-real-soon."

Korean words and phrases seems to have a very different translational feel to it. It may be because I know the language (so I'm sure this happens from any language translated to any other language) but there are times when I feel that english subs don't translate lines with the full weight of the line in the actual language. It is times like these that I appreciate and see the difficulty subbers have with translating. While Korean phrases may be succinct, the translations needs more English to fully describe the phrase which doesn't always happen in subs.

0

Cool, thanks so much for that explanation!

I'm glad I read the comments so I get so much interesting additional infos :)

English isn't my native language, so I get what you mean, sometimes there is subtext that can't be translated "literally".
Also, that's why I really like when subbers put additional infos in parenthesis, like when they translate "ahjumma" als "ahjumma" and explain what it means, instead of resorting to an us equivalent or just put that persons name.

0

@Gidget and acacia Thanks a lot for explaining. I already realized that the phrase seemed to hint at a lot more than just- "What do I do" because SIG has that amazing ability to emote through his voice modulations ("danngshin" in IRY is a perfect example here) but I didn't really know the exact meaning cuz I understand almost no Korean.

1

That explains it perfectly. I also loved that the hand holding said that the kiss came from a place of emotional connectedness, not passion. It's a settled and deeper kind of love.

I know he is not abandoning Bok Shil or his newfound family.

The "phone battery" and "phone your friend" makes me think that perhaps we could call Lee Je Han sunbaenim (a la Signal) and ask him to change the past so that 38TF saves at least one twist for Shopping King Louie, sth like this:

"This is my last transmission. If you are reading this please help us. Stop the 38TF director from using all twists possible, so that it can be used in Seo In Guk's next show. We want this show to be all fluff and unicorn- we don't need tragic deaths to wake up our cute little puppies from their fantastic dreams. Don't lose hope. The past can be changes. Over and out."

Okay. I really should focus on my work now!

SKL was at the bottom of my drama list until this one caught up and is quickly overtook the others. I am so amazed by the innocence of the OTP. It's so heart warming to see two people who barely have nothing on their own but need each other and depend on each other so much. I love the idea that our OTPs first experience of love started from friendship. Friendship to love is a typical trope but this drama paced itself and allowed us to witness their growth as individuals who are trying to make it work in the world. Nothing felt contrived or forced to make it appear as a love story. We're there when they started as strangers and now we've seen how beautiful their relationship blossomed from mishaps and moments. I'm enjoying this drama so much that sometimes i wish we never get to the angsty part and if we do I hope the show will continue to carry on its lightheartedness and humor and not get too messy and angsty.

LOVE this SHOW!

Everything about this show and it's leading couple is just so pure and honest. I feel like my heart grows three sizes with each episode. The kiss was perfectly executed and, like LollyPip said, felt like part of the natural progression of Louis and Bok Shil's relationship, rather than something the writers were holding off of for the sake of buildup. It also was just right for them. The tentativeness and quiet setting was so true to who our couple are as people, especially since it was probably both their first kiss.

(Another detail I found cute, if you look during the long shot of the kiss, there's a neon sign with the words "My Baby...❤❤❤" flashing in bright pink letters over their heads ?)

I loved the song moment this episode! I really want to know how the music director/writer picks them because I just find their choices so interesting, yet apt. The songs they pick range everywhere from 70s folk rock to Cats The Musical (lol).

ok Be My Baby is stuck in my head now

will this ever end?

honest, the episode was sweet, but the preview was so terrifying. what if the speculations of Bok Nam being dead are really true? I just don´t see a happy end for our kittens in that case. then again, THIS drama just wouldn´t do it to us, right? Tell me it won´t.

what I love most here is how everyone thought the humor in this drama would be silly and childish, yet it is actually very very smart, a bit absurd, yes, but definitely not plain nor naive.

the other thing I like is that Louie doesnt make a big issue out of the things he does for Bok Shil, like in other dramas a piggy back ride or a beach date would be accompanied by dramatic violins like were all supposed to faint after we realize the hero is kind of making a sacrifice for the heroine by doing that.

third thing is the attention to details like "the smell of books" - don´t we ALL know just what they mean!

be my be my baby another week is covered I really really hope they won´t have I will alwasy love you by Whitney Houston cause that will really sound horrendous from me even humming.

also, Mari is really her Daddys´ Little Girl but in a very ironic way..

I was thinking this is how "villains" are supposed to be - their existance being necessary so we can see how the heroes always surface victorious and derail them. The baddies of the good old days, who end in comic book striped jackets.

I'm right with you redfox! Let's trust that this drama wouldn't make BokNam dead...

I agree with everything you say about this drama especially bit about the little things Louis does for BokShil. It also shows a lot of growth in Louis and how he finds it automatic and obvious to do things for BokShil without being prompted or having to be acknowledged for these acts.

And... you can always sing in the comments... LOL I'll imagine a red fox singing with Whitney Houston's voice ;)

I just love this show. It's so happy and sweet. Even the introspective and somewhat sad moments lead to happiness because they show the characters growing. Louis and Bok-shil's relationship is a joy to watch. They are just two people who have naturally fallen in love as they have gotten to know one another. There is no pretense or manuevering, and that kiss at the end just encapsulated their whole relationship.

FINALLYYY FINALLYY FINALLYYYYYY!!!!!! That was probably one of the sweetest kiss I've seen!!! I seriously didn’t expect it especially since the previews for this drama are so misleading BUT THANK YOU SKL STAFF!!!!

Every episode is consistent in making me fawn over SIG and this adorable couple and… basically all the characters. This episode definitely ups my standards LOL

I have a buttload of thoughts on this episode so please don't mind my long comment (I tried to make it as brief as possible). After moving out of state for school I haven't had people I can fangirl dramas over so I just need to spill all my thoughts out on this site ;)

Memorable moments
1. What’s your surname? - A: “Wang (King)” I had the exact reaction as BokShil
2. “You’re the only one who trusts me” awwwwwww
3. “This is all for BokShil” GAHHH *giggles like a kid*
4. Adopted family moment with Insung, Mom, Louis, and BokShil - two childish grownups fighting for mom’s lap LOL
5. Playing in the ocean scene. It must've been so cold in the ocean capturing this scene but they look so good together!! Chemistry overload!!!
6. “I think I’m so mushisuh” LOL me too Louis.. me too
7. “All the times I waited for you” with that DEEP LOOK IN HIS EYES!! Who could RESIST?!?!
8. Holding hands while kissing!!! More than the kiss, when the camera pans over to their hands and he takes a hold of her hands….. I meltedddd

Three more thoughts from this episode
1. I think Maxim coffee wins the award for the best use of PPL. Maxim helps Mr Lee win 5 stars! Maxim helps catch a serial killer! What will Maxim do next??
2. SIG definitely doesn’t look over even the slightest details in creating his characters. He constantly has hands out with his fingers out to the side while he walks (or prances around teehee) so that even when he wears a nice suit (one of Joongwon’s normal suits LOL) he still has his babo-ish feel
3. AND I don’t know if it was like that before, but when items call out Louis’ name, I believe it’s BokShil’s voice!!!

Last thought, like Lollypip says the growth of Louis is slow but evident throughout the episodes. I complained from time to time seeing the childishness of Louis, but we all agree that his upbringing made him almost helpless in becoming a literal manchild. That being said, the people around him have slowly encouraged him to grow more as a man which is evident in the little details like Louis carrying BokShil's bags or buying food to share with everyone. The effort the actors and production staff put into this drama is SOOO noticeable and worth appreciating LOVE LOVE LOVE on you all :)

15+ alpha to everything you said, and you are more than welcome to fangirl over SIG (or anyone else) here- that is one of the many benefits of DB :D

I loved all the moments you mentioned but #7 is the most memorable. And I agree with your thoughts no 1 and 2 wholeheartedly, and now that you have mentioned it, the "Louie-ya" voice of all the shopping items is quite similar to Bok Shil's!

That is sure to happen. Koboshi is too similar to Ko Bok Shil to not be explained. Would there be a childhood connection?

1

@ObsessedMuch I mentioned that I wouldn't like it if Koboshi is a reference to BokShil from a childhood connection in the ep recap when Koboshi first came out. But if they do bring that in, I hope they do it as tastefully as they've made this drama thus far... I would be pretty disappointed if they used a childhood connection like every other drama has :(

0

@acacia I trust the writers to give us a heart-warming version of the stereotype. I don't mind old tropes if they are brilliantly done.

I felt like Louie was a bit more mature acting this episode. Last episode he was really grating on me with all his reflexive commands. This time, he only did that a little - with the coffee order - and he appropriately thanked Manager Lee.

(BTW I'm pretty sure manager Lee is supposed to be coded gay and was a trifle smitten by Louie.)

Funny moments for me this episode:

1) Red & green arrows as Butler Kim looks for Louis
2) When Louis struts into Goldline office like THE boss and starts to tell everyone how he knows Bok-shil & Oska's
3) the whole scene of how he accidentally pre-set the crime scene with coffee powder and a friggin' LIGHTSABER. I was wiping my eyes from laughing too hard there.
4) the notes to the Goldline employees, complete with stars!
5)the fight between puppies for cleaning ajumma's lap, just too cute!
6) Oska's getting and eating Louis's chi-co delivery dinner (shout out to HSKOS)
7) Joo-hyun's backlit entry to the bookshop and immediate screech to real life again once he says he's a cop, haha
8) Louis reading in foreign languages and stating that he's so cooooooool...
9) actually super-awesome and heart-swelling recording of him reading and interacting with Bok-shil
10) THAT KISS. THAT KIIIIIIISSSS. It was lovely. His hesitations as he's going in were PERFECT. SIG is just wow. Just wow.

I love how in character the kiss was. In any other drama it would feel like a dead fish kiss because you usually have all this angst and tension before and then you're just like "that's it?!!?". However, for this kiss, it was exactly what lollypip said. It was a natural progression of the love that has been building all along. His slight hesitancy. Her backing up but then her resolution to stand still when she felt his hand on her. How she closed her eyes wanting this but being nervous too. His hand sliding down to meet hers. Just perfect.

For the past couple episodes I've been thinking that maybe the dad didn't order Louis' accident. But he probably found out about it and didn't say anything so Grandma would think Louis was dead and give him the company shares. I agree with Lollypip, I just don't see him being capable of ordering a hit on someone. It's also a bit too dark for this show. The same thing with Bok-nam possibly being dead, I just don't see it. Or at least I hope not.

SQUEEEEEEE!!!!! Such a cute episode!

Finally our Louise is growing!

This show now has become my cure for depressing/tiring days. Yesterday, i was kind of depressed over a personal issue, and then to get out that depressing thoughts, i watched ep 7 , since i could not watch last week. All my sadness, just disappeared within moments i started watching this drama, because Louise Bokshil scenes were so cute, and the hilarious scenes between Louise- Mr. Cha were just on point, that it really made me feel so so much better.

I am glad i am watching this drama, because it has so many little things, that just makes you break into a smile and grin from ear to ear, and being jealous that you dont have a guy like Louise beside you in real life.

I am loving the change in Louise's behaviour from being the King -of -Ordering -People - Around to being more teeny bit responsible and looking after Bokshil.

I wish that when he gets his memory, he should still live with bokshil on the rooftop.

Is it me or anyone was curious of how much ratingst Mr. Cha got from Louise. I bet its zero stars.

Thanks for the lovely recap Lollypip. Loving the show, and hope it continues to get better and better.

So I admit, I am one of those kdrama fans who has a tendency to rewind and rewatch scenes - often of the romantic and/or kissing variety (shhhhh).

But with SKL, I find myself rewinding and rewatching many of SIG's reaction scenes. Like in this episode, when Joong-won and Bok-Shil see Louie sitting behind JW's desk and Louis makes this hilarious face with his hands thrown up in the air... I just can't help but laugh at the funny face AND the unexpectedness of SIG's silly reaction. They have to be cracking up on set all the time. And some of the faces Louis made at In Sung this episode... SIG really is so great (but then the whole cast is doing a terrific job).

I also love all of the little animations - the colored arrows, the kitty ears, the crown on Louis and the boulder on Mr. Lee's head...so much creativity here. I love it!

1. I don't think anyone suspected that Louis had switched places with someone else. There was no reason to suspect it. So they just assumed the body was Louis, which was perfectly natural.

2. No picture in the paper, for drama reasons. :-) He wasn't part of the company, as he was kept far away from grandma. Although, usually for Korean funerals/memorial services, they have a big framed picture of the deceased. This would have tipped off Oska, so for drama reasons there was no picture there either (as far as I remember).
