The many faces of con man Lee Min-ho in Legend of the Blue Sea

A different Lee Min-ho for every day of the week? I could get used to that. The latest teaser for SBS’s fantasy romance drama Legend of the Blue Sea features our chameleon con man hero, played by Lee Min-ho, in both past and present in all sorts of disguises, from suave to geeky and everything in between. The story spanning centuries is about the love of the world’s last mermaid, played by Jeon Ji-hyun, and the con man who gets stuck with helping her navigate the big bad city.

The teaser opens with sweeping shots of Lee Min-ho as an official in Joseon, then cuts to Jeon Ji-hyun asking him in the present day, “What’s a wife?” Oh, please tell me there’s a contract marriage in here somewhere, because those hijinks need to happen. He must not be too excited to answer her, because he flails and mutters, “I’m screwed!”

He seduces a woman at a bar and introduces himself as a lawyer, then later we see him as a prosecutor. Someone says to him, “You’re the Harry Potter of con artists.” But it’s not like he’s an actual magician, because when he counters a gunman by flipping open his lighter with a command to put the gun down, he’s the one who ends up apologizing in the very next breath, heh.

I love the last beat, where he pauses to cool down Jeon Ji-hyun’s coffee very sweetly so that she doesn’t burn her tongue, and she just reacts like a little kid, blowing on her coffee till she’s blue in the face. She reminds me of Shin Mina’s gumiho in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, full of childlike wonder and adorably strange reactions to everyday things. Con man or not, he can’t be such a bad guy if he’s looking after her, no?

Legend of the Blue Sea premieres November 16 following Jealousy Incarnate on SBS.

❤?????LOOoOooveee Lee Min Ho's visuals and charisma in all these teasers. He seems more brazen, blatantly charismatic and playful. Compared to his role in "Faith", "Personal Taste" and "Heirs". This feels more like goofy and funny Goo Jun Pyo time. I love Goo Jun Pyo character and he is my ultimate Kdrama crush. ??? There is some sad and heartbreaking feels to the first and the third teaser. A mermaid story has to have some heartbreaks and emotional feels to it. I love the short shoundtrack at the beginning too.

PS The third teaser is also sO funny and cute too ????❤❤❤

Omg! I actually caught the cultural reference for the lighter thing! It comes from the climactic scene in this 90s movie Attack the Block. I watched it really randomly last month and was roaring with laughter. I'm so excited to catch the connection but it doesn't really matter, does it? Lol

I'm looking forward to this, if only because then the stream of promos will stop ?

********
i honestly wonder if its the payback.. last time heroine time traveled and the man was left to look out for her..

this time man got reincarnated and heroine has to track him down..

and for love of god, if she decides to go back into the water at 40 minutes 50 second of ep 20..

I WILL JUST BLAST SBS OFFICE!

Same. I'm a big fan of time travel/fantasy but after this scarring experience I'm almost tempted to wait until a few episodes are out and I've heard positive comments, even if this is Lee Min Ho in flowery pyjamas.

And Heirs is a good memory if all I recall is Kang Haneul's understated performance. The only character I cared about in that whole mess.

Hey People,

A not so related request for everyone, I have been in what I can call as a KDrama Binge Hiatus for 2 years (I think) for a reason called real life (sucks!) now I am eyeballs deep on the dramas I ought to watch, I have been listing some but I realized I might take a year or more, to watch all of them, see I cannot (yet) tender my resignation for the reason that I want to watch all of these, ya know. Well, anyway, could you kind loving beanies give some recoms, I am not discriminating of sorts, I can watch a GOOD sageuk if needs be, a rom-com, fusion of whatever sort they might have invented in the past years, though I am quite hesitant watching dramas with higher than recommended unsaturated fat from ham-acting and bloated plots.

Any recoms? ? ?

P.S. Through the insistence of some people I have watched Descendants, Moonlight drawn by the Clouds and Answer me 1988 and enjoyed them

LOL, you should just look through the Off-topic posts that pop up every Friday.

You've probably heard of these but here are the classics:

Answer Me 1997, 1994, 1988. The last two are probably for when you have more time because PD-nim went a little nuts with the episode lengths. Ah, but I see you have watched '88.

Misaeng.

Signal.

Age of Youth.

People, including me are amused by Jealousy Incarnate.

There are probably more, but these will set you up good enough till the end of the year if you are as busy as you say you are.

Beautiful Mind - Jang Hyuk is terrific!

The following two involved Mugyo and metaphysics that were discussed in detail in the recap comments:
Oh Hae Young Again
Mirror of the Witch

Older Kdramas:
Alone in Love -- Very touching and low-key.
Soul Mate -- Memorable characters. The music is great!
Hyena -- If raunchy is your cup of tea...
Man of the Vineyard -- Something About 1% meets Green Acres.

I have feeling that the story will be similar to man from another star which is not good. The heroine and hero met in previous life and she is not able to forget him and her life is longer than him since she is not a full human so she met him again but she found his personality is not the same!

Too bad ! I was waiting for LMH new drama.

so far so good!! I'm loving it this far!! please be good and don't dissappoint me like two other dramas did to me, please!!
I loved the opening with Lee Min Ho in sageuk attire (it suited him really well) and the the background music, it made me see why I love sageuks: the lights and costumes and music are really good, when they are done the write way!! well most of the time I run away from the sageuk dramas because of their sad/devastating endings because most of them tells history stories and as we know history was never a happy faritale!! (I only got stuck to Moonlovers for Lee Jun Ki and only for him) *sigh* so having this kind of dramas which combine sageuk and modern life is actually my ally, I'll have the lights, music and beautiful costumes that I love in sageuks+a happy ending in the modern life!! and please give me a happy ending, you can't give me/the OTP a sad ending in their two life lines, right?!! Please?!!

Worked for Healer and MDBC.

Hot actors and bad to mediocre writing and everyone on this site will rave about it

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

What? I haven't seen MDBC but Healer was a writer's drama through-and-through. It was the #1 strength of that drama.

Almost all popular Korean actors are hot. You're only saying this about the dramas that YOU personally don't like or think are overrated. There are tons of dramas, even ones released just in 2016, with hot actors and bad writing that weren't well-received on DB. Uh, DOTS, anyone?

Saying that Beanies rave about dramas with hot actors and bad writing would mean they rave about virtually every drama with poor writing, which simply isn't true.

Anytime someone wants to recommend healer, the first thing they tell you is how much an eye candy JCW is, before they tell you whether it is a good drama or not.

And anyone who doesn't think it is next best thing since slice bread is crucified for their opinion.

I legit think healer is the definition of mediocre drama. writing at times is all over the place and it uses deus ex machina way too often.
The acting is good. PMY's character was straight up annoying. Many scenes were too cheesy/corny for its own good.

0

I won't argue with you about MDBC's plot, but it was popular because its amazing cast and production team elevated the material. Park Bo-gum may be the face of it (and deservedly so - boy is extremely talented) but everyone both in front and behind the camera gave their 101%. And it showed. To say that it was just about the "hot actors" is to discredit their talent and dedication.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah. DOTS was really overrated and this looks to be also.

I feel like when big Hallyu stars are in a drama, that drama will almost always have a mediocre plot. I think it's because the Hallyu stars charge a high salary, so the drama has to make money selling to China and other places. So then the drama can't be innovative or take risks with the plot...they have to play it "safe" and do something that is proven to have worked in the past (like these Gu Jun Pyo/childlike woman hijinks).

In my case, I loved the teaser, the first trailer and this one as well. Im really excited to see Lee Min Ho playing different roles and the visuals are so beautiful! Jeon Ji Hyun shows a cute side being a total baddass at the same time. She and LMH look good together and I felt a really lovely atmosphere in the adorable "blowing the coffee" scene.
I love the combination of comedy and drama. The historical part looks amazing! I cant wait to see this!

Slightly off-topic, but did anybody else get the "Centrum" ad playing before the teaser?

It's really bugging me that Lee Sang-yoon is playing jenga wrong in the ad. The goal is to take the blocks out of the stack, not put them in! If only Sang-yoon would come to game night with me...

I had to google the ad cos I didn't get that one. I don't understand the audio without subs, but I think the tower was a metaphor for our body or something, and it was unstable because of the missing vitamins and minerals. So LSY was putting the missing stuff back in like how Centrum will complete you.

LOL I could be totally wrong though. Too bad the ad doesn't have subs. XD
