Yoon So-hee joins Ruler–Master of the Mask, L in contention

I’m excited to hear more about MBC’s upcoming sageuk drama Ruler—Master of the Mask, because once they secured Yoo Seung-ho (Remember–Son’s War) to play a lonely prince and Kim So-hyun (Bring It On, Ghost) to play his enemy-turned-love-interest, I was in, no matter what else happened with the cast.

…Of course, then the drama went and courted Infinite idol L (She’s So Lovable) for a second lead role, which would be a casting with no silver linings. At least he hasn’t confirmed yet?

The drama is set in the 1700s, and centers around a prince (Yoo Seung-ho) who takes up the lonely fight against a secret organization comprising society’s most rich and powerful men as they seek to privatize the water supply. Kim So-hyun’s character sets out for revenge against the prince when her father is executed on his orders, and they end up falling in love.

Yoon So-hee (Memory), meanwhile, has confirmed taking the drama, and will be playing the granddaughter of the head of the secret organization that’ll be the prince’s main opposition. Described as a tragic character, she throws away everything and betrays her family in order to love the prince. Yoon So-hee has done sageuk before, briefly; she played adult Kim Yoo-jung in Secret Door, although she was a last-minute replacement and didn’t have much to do in that. I don’t have a strong opinion of her—she’s been fine in some things (Let’s Eat), annoying in others (Marriage Not Dating)—but hope that she’ll be a good fit for this drama.

L is up to play a son of a butcher whose base origins prevent him from making anything of his life or his brilliant mind. He’s resigned himself to a pointless life, until the queen teaches him to read, and then he ends up taking up the role of “fake king” standing in for Yoo Seung-ho (presumably after he’s ascended the throne). It sounds like an interesting character, which is why I am hoping earnestly that it’ll go to somebody who can carry it; L is someone I dearly wish would stop getting cast in things, because he often makes me cringe. He was recently considering joining the high school mystery-thriller Solomon’s Perjury too, but ended up passing on that, so hope remains alive.

Ruler—Master of the Mask will be a 20-episode drama airing in the first half of next year.

L.....look I like you as an Idol and you're quite nice to look at but please don't act anymore!!!!!! It's so BAD.

If they want an idol take Kyungsoo or Jinyoung.

I am an inspirit but it's kind of sad to say that I agree with you...
But on the other hand L has great comedy beats; you should watch him on SNL Korea. Unfortunately the ones who casted him only saw his looks and give him serious, romantic roles.

if you really need an idol for this one, please just take Jinyoungie!!
But but.... i know i'm going to have another broken heart if he do plays the second lead.. *sigh*
At least Jinyoung is a much better option than L. I personally think that Myungsoo is fine, and he did much better in She's Lovable rather than his previous drama. But still!! He needs tons of practice.
And I don't think Kyungsoo (D.O) would up for the role though, even if he wants to do it. SM might have something in store already for the guy. Though the reunion with KSH seems tempting enough for me, and he's one good idol actor.

It looks as though the drama team doesn't care who will act for other roles. We got yooseungho, we got kimsohyun. That's enough, let's do this!
I start to imagine that behind all of this casting news, there's someone like Kim Eun Gab who does his best to convince the drama team to pick his actor and there's also someone, a higher up, who would interfere the team's decision.
I'll cast another prayer so that this drama, whoever the casts are, will still be a good drama. And i haven't stop praying, for lee jong suk, to turned down the role or, may be the female lead got drama jitter and backout of the drama..

I've heard yoon so hee is quite brilliant in regards of her education, so it was kind of upsetting to see her in an imbecile-ish role on marriage not dating. I think it would have been great to see her real life persona come alive on reel too.

SM's casting for dramas is an insult to anyone with talent tbqh, like why do they even bother having a branch with actual actors in it if all they do is shove people from the idol agency in all the lead roles?

I mean, sorry to their fans but Yoona and Yuri are not deserving of drama lead roles ahead of the likes of Yoon So-hee and Moon Ga-young. (at least Sooyoung and D.O. are decent actors, but the rest....)

He was my favorite in Shut Up Flower Boy Band (which is like my favorite kdrama in the whole wide universe before DOTS appeared) but his roles and acting beyond that were just underwhelming. He can try a minor role in this one and see if there's any improvement. But he's just not ready for lead or second-lead roles as of now.

L is hit or miss in his dramas. He is okay in flower boy band because he didn't have to do much but brood. I thought he was decent in sly and single as the driver/friend of the main lead. He was also decent in she's lovable but again he was playing an idol. The weekend drama he was in was boring but that could be writingood. It got taken off the air I believe so I doubt it was just him that caused it haha. He's not breaking any molds but I don't think he deserves a ton of hate either. He's okay not amazing but okay

If they really want an idol, they should cast Jinyoung from GOT7 instead. I really see his potential in acting. I love Myungsoo but I don't think he would be able to follow the acting of the three, especially the main leads, judging from his acting in his previous works. He's still weak and I don't want to see ~acting controversy~ articles targeting him again saying that he's ruining the drama blahblahblah

Also, there many talented teens or early 20s actors as well so why don't they cast them as the second lead? There's Kim Minjae, Kwak Dongyeon, Shin Jaeha, Kim Junghyun, Lee Hyunwoo, etc... Actually, CAST YEO JINGOO!!! (though tbh he's waaaayyy beyond second lead material but I super miss watching him on the small screen lol)

As a hardcore Inspirit (they're my ultimate group with B1A4) I'm also scared about this casting lol. L, I LOVE & ADORE you to bits and you are sunshine BUT PLEASE, turn it down. I'm already seeing so much hate even though he hasn't even confirmed and I'm sorry to say that people's concerns are valid (just don't go calling him names & insulting him as a person though! He's a lovely guy, just a bad actor lol) but yeah, his acting has a lot to be desired. I loved him in SUFBB but that was essentially him playing his stage character L for most of it. I haven't seen him in other things, he is absolutely hilarious in variety situations with his members (SNL Korea was great) but this role sounds super serious and complicated and I'm worried that all the emotions and expressions won't make their way through on his beautiful face. :/

I wouldn't say that he's not capable of improvement, the boy works super hard (woollim won't let him sleep) and his singing ability has significantly increased since debut, of which, I'm so proud of, however, with acting it takes more than practice I feel? There needs to be a natural knack for it underlying as well, which I feel that he doesn't have right now. In my opinion acting is the more difficult craft to master and I just don't think he's ready for a role this meaty.

Sungjong's hair is purple can we just have a cute Infinite F comeback instead of L being casted in roles that he probably won't do all that well in? :( At least give him a rom com instead, he really is quite funny & quirky. He struggles so hard to be his serious persona "L" in interviews, Kim Myungsoo always shines through eventually, and the boy is a major dork. Just let him stick to his strengths.

I feel like you can't even compare him to B1A4's Jinyoung, although Jinyoung didn't start of "great" in his previous roles, he has ALWAYS been decent, he was never bad. Moonlight just let him elevate himself further.
At this stage I can only see L going from "Bad" to "decent" if he does show that he has improved, however, decent just isn't enough for a sageuk role that demands this much of him. We NEED spectacular acting for this role. Yoo Seungho & Kim Sohyun need the other actors to match their ability so that there is acting consistency throughout.

Sorry a bit lengthy but just my two cents bc I love L, but I just hope for an Infinite F comeback instead of this, I don't want to see one of my favourites getting hated on orz & if he does this, he will get hate.

I thk i read an article elsewhere that said L confirmed. Yoon So hee keeps getting casted opposite idols. I thk shes serviceable. But im tuning in to ruler for Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun. They are both great actors. I dint really care about the 6 yr gap. I was worried it Let's fight it ghost and that worry was unfounded- Kim So hyun interacts so effortlessly with her male costar. Yoo Seung Ho can emote so well. So im really looking forward and hopes the script and directing makes full potential of our leads. Kim So Hyun is 18 next year, or 19 in Korean age- not really a minor anymore either.

Of all the possibilities, they went for the one singular person I literally cannot stand on screen. L is of another star when it comes to 'acting'. In that I wouldn't insult the word by associating it with him.

I really hope it doesn't push through. I love the leads too much not to watch and dislike the second lead too much to watch. Gah. I guess I can take comfort in Taec + Yoona improving immensely in the past dramas they've done. Then I remember IU ruining what could've been a decent drama so...

'Quite good'?????? Seriously... lol, I think that's a huge reach, but each to their own. In MY opinion, Yoona is just as good or just as bad as IU depending on how you describe both girls. In some roles, they do fine~well, and in others, they are goddamn terrible. Yoona was 'great' in PM&I just like IU was 'great' in Producers. And IU was just as unbearably terrible and ridiculous in Moon Lovers as Yoona was in Sarang Bi.

As for L... not even. Not. At. All. Taec can emote and show some sort of reaction as far as I'm concerned, and paired with someone like Kim So-hyun he did a passable job in Ghost. L can only half smirk - whether he's pissed, angry, happy, flirty, neutral or sleeping. He has one expression. Literally. So... I don't agree with you whatsoever.

I really ship him with yoon so hee since these two are only the main character in the previous drama also. I think he will be comfortable with the cast and maybe even look great in hanbok. The PD and production team want him, they obviously know their job better than anyone who has a problem with it and who's playing the expert.. "she's so loveable" was more than 2 years ago, the script was shitty, the plot was shitty, the acting of the whole drama was shitty.. You can't blame him for all of that.. Since then he filmed 1 full movie where he's the main lead and 3 dramas and he proved since his appearance last year that he improved a lot and the industry is aware of that.. that's why he's getting even more offers than before.. So i hope people would stop being biased against him because they think his acting 10 years ago was "bad".. They need to move on tbh.. He just rejected a drama role where he's supposed to be the 1st lead so he probably has no problem to reject this one as well if he thinks it doesn't fit him and he's obviously not desperate for roles and just happens to get a lot of offers at this point.
