SBS to adapt Moon/Sun, Sungkyunkwan author’s newest novel

The Moon That Embraces the Sun and Sungkyunkwan Scandal were both highly successful drama adaptations that were based on author Jung Eun-kwol’s novels, so it’s no wonder that SBS snapped up the rights to the author’s most recent work, called Hong Chun-gi. The new novel is another fanciful reimagining of history set in Joseon, much in the same vein as the two previous works, and the adaptation rights were scooped up right away after the book was published earlier this month.

The fusion sageuk is set in the early 15th century and tells the story of the only female painter in Joseon, named Hong Chun-gi, who is mentioned only briefly in historical record. The novel imagines her colorful life story as a beautiful painter who enters the palace and shares lovelines with a blind astronomer and arts enthusiast Grand Prince Anpyeong, third son of King Sejong.

Hong Chun-gi’s mother once prayed to the heavens to send a suitor down for her daughter to marry, and one day when a strikingly beautiful young man falls from the sky right in front of her, she believes he’s been sent from the heavens just for her. Pfft, I like her already. The young man, named Ha Ram, is nearly blind due to an accident during a rain ceremony, and can only see the color red. He holds a position in the palace as an astronomer, and after meeting Hong Chun-gi, he discovers that there’s a larger mystery surrounding his eyes.

It’s described as a story about the ardent love and the cheerful life of Hong Chun-gi, which sounds like a nice mix of Moon/Sun’s earnest romance and Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s bright sensibility. At least I hope that’s the winning combination that drama producers are going for.

SBS has begun pre-production on Hong Chun-gi, which is being planned for a 2018 broadcast. That is EONS away, SBS.

Well, since everyone is voting for their faves here I'll put my 2 cents in too...

Yeo jin goo and Kim yoo Jung!!

My mind still can't move on from that scene where Kim yoo Jung was removed from the palace and yeo jin goo was crying his hearts out...**sniff, sniff**

I need proper closure..

Excuse me while I'm lightning all the candles in the house...

Lee Joon Gi fans may not like it but he is heading back to Chungmuro. :) :) :) It's about time for him to go back to making movies again.

Yeah, he should focus on movies for a while like Gong Yoo and Lee Seon Kyun. I wish the same too for Seo In Gook after he comes back from Military Service, hope he pulls a Kang Dong Won and focuses on movies.

I just found he actually became popular in movies. He released two movies this year btw. One was a lead role in a Taiwan/China production & 2nd was a support role in a hollywood production, the last installment of the Resident Evil franchise. But he hasn't done a Kmovie in 10 years.

I'm behind you. City Hunter's Kim Na Na and Scarlet Heart's Wang So. Perfect pair. Hot then there are two male leads. I'm rooting for the astronomer to be Lee Jun Ki and the Prince to be.....

Oh! Oh! Suddenly all I could wish for was Park Min Young and Ji Chang Wook (HEALER reunion!!, but he will be off to the military won't he? Oh rats! They've even both done saguek before ( my forever favorite drama SKKS! Will Park Yoo Chun be available?). Ah well, I'd just be pleased if the leads have a charming sense of humor ( thinking more Lee Jun Ki Running Man and less serious Scarlet Heart charming both ways but I would like to see him channel his inner variety show skills to drama). Currently loving Hwarang and Park Seo Jun. I could wish to see him again in a saguek but based on how Hwarang does I'm not sure if he would be up for it...*I luf it! I really do!* Hwarang Fighting!

My sageuk dream suggestions for these roles:

Seo Hyun-Jin for the painter. She was terrific with Jo Hyun-Jae, Kim Young-Jae, and Yoon Tae-Young in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, so a rematch with any of them would be dandy. Ditto for Yeo Ui-Joo (the crown prince's body guard, who acquitted himself well in SWWTN).

For the astronomer and prince, I'd love to see her play opposite Lee Joon-Gi, Jang-Hyuk, Zo In-Sung, Ryu Deok-hwan (he should be back from the service before too long), Jo Seung-woo (who may be too busy with musical theatre), or Kam Woo-Sung.

Ha Ji-Won also comes to mind for the leading lady. She was great in HWANG JIN-YE and DUELIST.

I would like to see Yoon Doo Joon as the lead. I loved his Character in Splash Splash Love he was so convincing and he drew me in which is unusual for some actors for me. For female lead actress I'd love to see Jo Bo Ah, knows how to bring it without reservation with her natural sexiness.

I think the majority of the commentators on here have spoken! And it's my lady, MOON CHAE WON!!!!!

I've missed her so much! But, I just couldn't get past Goodbye, Mister Black even though I love her to death! I hope she signs on a project soon! She's a very good actress and this sounds right up her alley. Her diction is not the best, but I really love her in saegak! She slays every time. :3

Please, Drama Gods, pwetty pleaseeeeeeeeeeee!

Why do I feel I´ll like the prince better with her and she obviously ends up with the other guy? That´s painful about Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Yo Ah In. He was perfect for six flying dragons. He would be excellent as the blind astronomer. He isn't under aged too. The man is 30 now. He and Park Shin Hye.
