Celebrate Dramabeans’ 10th anniversary with us!

Happy new year everybody! This year is special for us not only because we get to kick 2016 away (although it was admittedly a pretty solid year for dramas) and welcome in a fresh, unspoiled one, but also because it marks Dramabeans’ tenth anniversary.

This site started as a tiny side project in January 2007, and that means we just completed our tenth year and are now heading into Year Eleven. That number still doesn’t seem quite real to me, and I can’t quite grasp that we’ve been at it for so long (and through so many dramas)—but, if good for nothing else, the white hairs on my head are testament to how much time really has passed.

I never imagined when Dramabeans began that it would turn into a full-time job, or that it would grow to this size, or that I’d meet and make such connections with people I consider lifetime friends. It’s now officially been the longest job either I or girlfriday have held, which is a bit daunting to think about but is also something we’re intensely grateful for. We love this work, and although it often exhausts us—we aren’t as young as we once were!—we still find the energy somehow to carry on, because it’s so worth it. (And, it’s ruined us for proper jobs elsewhere, if we’re being honest!)

I’ve always said that I had no idea how long I intended to run Dramabeans, but that’s not because I had one foot out the door, but more that it would have been too daunting to commit for so much time up front, feeling locked in by a promise rather than being led by something more powerful—the joy that dramas bring us, and that fierce need of the fan’s heart to share that with other fans. And I firmly believe it’s that open-ended view that has kept us open and going strong, because while we know that we can walk away whenever that love dies, that’s a freeing thought more than anything, because we also know that we’ll probably love dramas forever in some capacity.

To celebrate our tenth birthday, we’ve got some fun things planned in the month(s) ahead, so keep your eyes peeled! We’ve got our eyes on a new look for the site, and we’re also planning a celebratory party—one that we’d like to open up to all of you to attend, to meet other Beanies and hang with the Dramabeans staff. Because what’s the fun in aging if you don’t get to party?

Dramabeans 10 Year Anniversary Party

Saturday, February 11, 2017
5PM
At Monk Space in Koreatown, Los Angeles

To attend, please RSVP to hello@dramabeans.com, providing your name and number of attendees.

The venue has a capacity limit, so we’ll be taking RSVPs to reserve spots and will confirm via email. (If we run out of slots, we’ll start a waiting list, so if you have to bow out at a later date, please let us know so we can open it up for others.)

Thank you all for an eventful and rewarding ten years—you guys make this place the best job to turn to every day. We hope to see you there!

Ten years already?! Where has the time gone? Saying THANK YOU for Dramabeans doesn't seem like enough. The DB staff has been my lifeline to all things K-drama. Your site was my gateway to visiting other sites, listening to K-pop, enjoying Korean food, and even visiting Seoul a couple years ago. (Of course I went to the top of Namsan Tower to see the love locks!)

Dear Javabeans, Girlfriday, and DB minions - Happy New Year, happy 10th anniversary, and many happy returns!

Happy 10th Anniversary,

Thanks for all the hardwork. I have been watching kdramas for 5 years now but only found out about this site last year. It has been a blast to comment and meet other people going on the roller coaster ride that is watching currently airing dramas. Keep up the good work and hope we all have an amazing 2017!

Your site has helped me choose many dramas that I might now have, skip some before wasting the hours, skip a few episodes to get into the exciting part of a drama, and relive some great episodes without spending more time in front of the tv. Very important site for Kdrama fans. Thanks.

I'm sad I can't attend, but I hope it's a great get together. Will you be having another celebratory event this year? I'd like to get a chance to meet up with all the Beanies.

Congratulation on your 10th anniversary, DB. I found you the first time because I need a closure for drama that I just couldn't watch anymore. And then I strted reading all your other posts, and eventually even left comments. This is like the only place I have to gush about drama and dissect it without being judged.

I wish I live near LA so I could attend, but since I'm half the world away, I wish you all a great party. Here is hoping for more awesome years together with DB and beanies.

Wow. First of all, congratulations. I only ever found this site by chance, but the recap formatting is so addictive I just HAD to come back for more.

Also, since I do not speak Korean, I sometimes find things lost in translations when subs come out, so I always find myself checking DB for recaps so I do not miss a single annotation or emotion. Thank you for that. <3

I also absolutely love how this is such a positive community. As a native tumblr-ite, I'm kind of used to fandom wars and meanies being mean, but this is such a loveable, accepting communities. I often find myself reading comments and I love how wach of them is informative, sweet and full of inherent excitement for the drama being recapped. Such a refreshing alteration.

I absolutely adore this website. Thank you for taking the time to always be here Javabeans and Staff. You guys are awesomesauce.

Lastly, it is kind of my dream for one day write for DB - My love for writing and kdrama's is kind of infinite, so maybe one day I'll apply for the job. ;)

Lastly, the glowing success of this site just goes to show that time may be tangible, but K-drama love is forever. Cheers to the DB team; Javabeans and Girlfriday and the rest.

Badass! Props on growing the site and becoming, really, the go-to hub for all things Kdrama! I've discovered so many shows because of you guys and, on top of it, your recaps have added so much nuance and cultural flavor to the viewing experience for a non-Korean gringo like myself. I love that you add that extra layer for me!

Cheers and here's looking forwarded to the Subway-esque Dramabeans tshirts for 2017. Make it happen. I'll buy.

Thank you for everything you did these past 10 years, and happy new year to all the DB staff and all the beanies ! I am more a lurker than a commenter (actually the only time I wrote some comments was for Healer, because I couldn't keep the excitement for myself), but when I saw this post, I really wanted to tell you that by continuously maintaining this site and being yourselves, a lot of lurkers like me feel happy and understood.
I actually started following you because of To The Beautiful You, which was so horrible (in my opinion of course) that I couldn't watch it anymore, but I really wanted to know the end. Then I just stumbled across your site (and the recaps), and I stayed. I would have loved to come and meet fellow drama fans, but France is a bit far away ^^'
Thanks again, and please just continue what you do, it's just awesome :)

I love your recaps, and other various posts because you guys put your own two cents in there. Regardless whether I agree or disagree, it gets a conversation going and make the entire website feel more personal.

Thank you for doing this!

Warm Congratulations JB, GF and all the Dramabeans Staff!

This was the first and continues to be the only site that I come to several times a day. It has provided me with connection with interesting people and both those I've actually met (in Singapore) because of kdramas (Healer in particular) and never met at all and we can still keep in touch and spazz over dramas. It's been such a joy.

Thank you for giving us this space to build community and chat about dramas and even about anything at all. Thanks also for your hard work, your dedication and commitment, even in the face of ill health. Here's wishing you good health and great dramas and many good years ahead. :D

Happy 10th Anniversary Dramabeans!!
Long live the site! All hail Dramabeans!
May the DB team always be healthy and happy to share kdrama virus around the world!
Yep I say around the world because I'm sure DB community come from many different countries. We could make league of nations out of Beanies! Haha

I've been reading (stalking) this site since 5 years ago. I remember in 2012 my friends shoved kdramas down my throat and since then I become an addict. Even though I knew kdramas before that, but 2012 was the turning point. I remember watched Cheongdamdong Alice, To The Beautiful You and 49 Days and I stumbled across this site to read recaps and never look back. It's amazing feel when I remember it now! I never knew such site could exist and Dramabeans probably the most complete Korean dramas site out there, that not focused on news, but on recaps.

Long story short, flash forward to 2017 and I'm still here, reading religiously and even checking the site several times a day. I'm really happy when a new post or recaps is up eventhough I don't watch/follow the drama. I'm just happy reading the post and the comments afterwards because Beanies' comments are always so interesting and cracks me up. Though I come here primarily for recaps, but I come to love other sections/categories too, like casting news, meta/pop culture (been so old), Open Thread, Odds and Ends (where is this now?), What We're Watching, Beans of Wisdom, reviews and awards news. My life would have been so much different if I never knew this site.

I'm so grateful for all the staffs and Beanies community. You're so awesome guys! I learn so many things (not only kdramas, I swear) and manage to gain new insights too. Wish you all the best and Happy New Year!!

Wow! 10 years! I remember just stumbling on your website looking for some articles and information about high kick 2 (one of my first kdramas). From there I found it really convenient for k-entertainment news, why I couldn't watch the next episodes cuz of certain korean events and holidays that I never knew of, upcoming awesome movies that I would have to wait for the following year to watch (so worth it), and drama recaps that saved hours of my life to just read the drama rather than watch hour long episodes that I had no time for in my busy college schedule. Even just reading your recaps expanded my vocabulary both English and Korean alike. lol So thank you Dramabeans and the whole team! I look forward to your new site and more Drama fun to fangirl about! \^o^/ <== my favorite emoji of 2016! Haha!

Happy 10th Anniversary Dramabeans!!!

Thank you for the years of recaps and reviews. Thank you especially for the insight and explanation of Korean culture, idiosyncrasies, customs, folklore, taboos, beliefs, superstition which have greatly enhanced the drama watching experience.

Failing which one would never have understood the many subtleties of the magical word 'Oppa' nor the magnitude of the OTP or the Tropes of Kdrama life nor the inexplicable traffic rules of Korea (beware any form of road crossing!) and the inexhaustible TOD.

Thank you Javabeans for the beginning and DB staff et al for the continuation.

I've been watching dramas since 2007 (haha, Freshman year in college, introvert, love of international movies and anime, then J-pop... yeah, I was bound to end up being a drama addict)! Found this site because of, well, can't recall if Dal Ja's Spring or You're Beautiful in 2009 is to blame, but I've been a regular ever since. I still remember the days of mysoju.com and dramacrazy.net hoping subs will get loaded. Haha, desperation of the times.

Congrats at being at it for so long. Someday I hope to find myself doing what I love for a living too. Happy 10 years to DB and all the Beanies that helped give this site even more life.

I have been a lurker on this site since Javabeans was still on wordpress and was recapping Que Sera Sera. Was that 2007? I rarely (almost never) comment but I am stepping out of my lurking mode to say a small thank you to Javabeans for creating this awesome community for those of us who love watching Korean dramas. I cannot believe I have been reading this site as part of my routine for 10 years!!! (Where does the time go?!) Thank you Girlfriday and the rest of the contributors/writers for joining the team and making this site even more awesome. I also love reading the comments from other beanies because it makes me feel better that I am not alone in this k-drama-watching addiction. The comments are always fun to read :)
