Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 26, 2016-Jan. 1, 2017

There were pre-emptions all over the place this week with all the awards ceremonies going on, which means the episode counts are going to be alll over the place starting next week. The only show to get pre-empted at the beginning of the week was megahit Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, which aired its one episode on Tuesday instead of Monday.
That meant that Hwarang got to enjoy a hefty bump into double digits on Monday, when its only broadcast rival was Night Light, but it fell back below 10% on Tuesday, when Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim returned to the tune of 23.7%. Still, Hwarang is doing relatively well, all things considered, and seems to be gaining more viewers with each passing episode.
Everyone seems to be settling into their places in the middle of the week, with Legend of the Blue Sea performing as expected, but no higher. And over on the weekend, even with The Lonely Shining Goblin encountering much less competition (now that Entourage has been put out of its misery), it stayed at about the same numbers it’s been pulling in lately, though those numbers are definitely nothing to sniff at. It’s a tough week to call ratings for, since we’ve got holidays and awards ceremony interference, so in lieu of more commentary, I’ll just say: Happy New Year!

The purpose of this isn't to show who beat who. I think the Viewership Ratings page is to just show which drama aired what day and what ratings they got. Thus, while Entourage and Goblin aired in different timeslots, they still had viewership ratings and because they were on the same day, they were grouped together.

I'm curious as to what site on the internet DB writers visit to get the ratings data. Nielsen Korea and TNMS only posts on their websites data for the top 20 TV programs, which makes me difficult to know the ratings of dramas that rank higher than 20th. Can someone help me please?

I'm not sure where DB writers gain those ratings data. But for me, I look up those information whether in kkuljaem or naver.
Personally, I prefer naver as it updates those data much faster and I fell like kkuljaem also gets those information from never. This is just a guess so I might be wrong.
Of course you need to know the drama title in korean for an efficient search. So simply copy and paste it on naver search tab. Hope it helps. :)

WOW! This Reddit list is great. What really jumped out at me is how 1Night2Days is creaming Running Man in the ratings. It adds perspective on why the producers screwed up the cast so much that they are all quitting. INight2Days is a powerhouse program.

I didn't know WFKBJ was pre-empted last Thursday until a few hours before it was supposed to air and was so heart broken. I replayed the wednesday episode to cure my sadness.

i wonder how hwarang will fare against defendant once RDTK is finished. for a drama that's competing against another that's raking +20% ratings, it's atleast not doing too bad

Likely not. MBC pushed back Missing 9 by a week (to January 18), so I presume they will air the WFKBJ finale on the 11th.

I thk the initial decision was ep14 on Wed ; Ep15 and ep 16 2episodes back to back on Thursday (5/1/217). They did the same with W before with 2 consecutive episode
But MBC has reversed that decision.
Quite a few sites listed ep 16 of WF to be aired on 11th Jan now.

I am surprise by the jump of Hwarang rating on Monday, but then I see that RDTK was pre empted. We can see the actual rating on Tuesday. Tha's really show how well loved RDTK is by Korean viewers.

As you know, in RDTK chat, there's so many fans still discuss about RDTK while RDTK pre empted. All of them complained, they've spare their time stand by to watch RDTK, but instead not air.
If RDTK end, not mean all viewers RDTK will move other to drama with similar rating. Rating above 20% of a drama especially always consistent mean how popular that drama, so people want to spare their time to follow a drama.

I love it too - been my favorite since first episode and hasn't disappointed yet. Weightlifting Fairy is a close second and Goblin is also superb.

Like the speech of kim sabu (han suk kyu) after won a daesang awards, the main purpose of RDTK is give the inspiration and motivation to viewers if there's still a hope in a messy world.
They not even expect the high rating and popularity like now, because they know if this drama is a life drama and medical drama that maybe not suitable with viewer taste. This drama take up some issues that happened in real life, describe the fact and problem in real life which be delievered nicely and very detail include the way how to clear the problem.
The inspiring character kim sa bu, with his wisdom and charismatic voice that always made me cry. I hope someone like him still remain in this life.
I don't like people who bash and critics RDTK even thought they didn't understand the mean and flow this drama. Yes, this drama still have deficiency, but to the whole of RDTK is very good, especially in quality. If you become more wisely when watch this drama, you'll be know what i mean.

That is exactly why Han Suk-kyu picked this role.
His voice alone is love! He's never been one of those noisy actors that turns me off. He is the definition of subtle and more.
If I was an actor I'd be watching the heck out of him.
I think that some are judging the whole show based on the romance alone.

Night Light will circle in between 4.5-6.5%.
Geum-Bi is winning awards and doing well in its ratings.
Romantic Doctor is fun and all but at the same time inconsistent and shallow. Well, ratings say otherwise.
I just saw the awards thread and Baek Hee has returned won award. I thought it was far easily forgotten.
Beautiful Mind didn't win any award at all and its when almost every show got some kind od recognition and award.

Romantic Doctor isnt imo as great writing, story as Beautiful mind but its far from shallow despite its big rating numbers its not shallow like Doctors was. It has episodic storylines like US/UK medical shows but it has strong characters, actors.
Beautiful Mind and awards ? You are talking about awards from the networks? Listen to DB crew in every post thoe kind of awards...since they are only for the rating winners, big popular dramas. W got most awards for MBC because it was the only weekly drama hit for them.
Look for Korean drama awards hosted by writers, producers guilds or the big Baaksang awards.
You cant go by popularity awards held by MBC/KBS/SBS because the so called "best" dramas are big rating hits like Descendents, Doctors only and no critic, fans would agree with that.....

That show not even need to be mentioned. Comparing Romantic Doctor to that show itself is grave insult to it. But its way too preachy and i'm not enamoured by the characters at all.
Every known or unknown show got award in those yearly channel award ceremonies so they would have given atleast 1 award to beautiful Mind. It doesn't matter much but atleast you are mentioned as product of the network. Beautiful Mind was kind of thrown out of family and forgotten.

BM could be a bit luckier if it was on SBS because SBS still gave awards for underrated drama unlike KBS and MBC (Weighlifting Fairy was quits lucky to air currently, if this drama was aired much earlier on, it had chance to be forgotten during award.

I also dont think the writing of RTDK is a shallow,what i am enjoying in this drama are the
characters and the interaction between characters. Beautiful Mind was great, but that drama was purely about Jang Hyuk's role as the centre and JH stellar performance also was the best thing alongside the writing.
These two are the only medical drama that I liked in my years of watching kdrama.

Well it was to be expected that after they tried shafting the last 4(!) episodes of the drama they wouldn't be giving it any awards. There was a severe lack of respect for the crew, actors and the viewers from way back, I would have been more surprised if they acknowledged it in any way.

Well, you can see on the Reddit there that there's really nothing drama-wise airing on Sunday nights, except for "Father I'll Take Care of You". There's Gag Concert and K-Pop Star6, plus a bunch of variety shows. Sort of reminds me of my childhood: Lassie, Bonanza and the Ed Sullivan Show. Yes, Beanies, I am THAT old!

--Really? But I just read an article that says Goblin has surpassed Signal as the second highest rated show of TvN.

Exactly! i r'm also read that from other (trusted) source, that Goblin's rating for episode 9 is 13,6% or something (nearly 14%), and it's true that was made Goblin the second highest rating of tvN of all time after Reply 1988.

The media article could be referring to its rating for metropolitan area, not the nationwide one. The ones written here on DB is the same as the ones on Nielsen Korea website - the nationwide rating for Goblin as stated on Nielsen Korea website 12.9 (Dec 30th) and 12.7 (Dec 31st)

Last year was really the first year tvN started to grab people's attention and now more and more viewers are tuning into tvN for the quality. I'm one of those. I'll watch ANYTHING done by tvN. I believe that if Goblin and Signal were placed head-to-head, that Signal would win. There were no holes or silly moments in Signal...several in Goblin but I'm not complaining. Still love it!

i am a signal fan but i think goblin would beat signal in ratings if they went head to head because of the writer and the presence of romance in goblin.

Does anybody know what will air on January 12 for MBC? Is there gonna be a special episode of Weightlifting Fairy or do we already get a replacement? Wouldn't it be weird to start a drama on a Thurs (if it'll be 16 episodes)? Or that's just me?

Hwarang is not as popular as romantic doctor teacher kim in South Korea but I believe it deserve more than that. Whatever their ratings is I commend the production staff for bringing a good drama worthy to watch. Dont worry about the ratings in sk. I have plenty of fans here internationally

It should be more popular overseas after all Hwarang was geared towards overseas market. It sold for $300,000 to China after the success of DotS.

Hwarang EP 4 was wayyyyy better than EP 3. I wish more viewers had seen that episode instead. It was very entertaining and we could see the start of the budding bromance. But the overall ratings are not bad at all.
Still glad Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim maintained its high ratings despite being pre-empted. Love this show! ^^
