Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 16-22, 2017

We got some new premieres this week, but it’s only the beginning of the glut of dramas that’ll soon be upon us. Among them was the quirky Introverted Boss over on tvN, which pulled in relatively low numbers for the network—but it also airs an hour later than its competition, and maybe that’s one hour too late for some viewers.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim finished with a bang, and then another one, since its special episode was more of an actual episode (to the point where I don’t know why they didn’t just call it an extension). Poor Night Light is still struggling with miserable numbers, so maybe its oncoming end this next week will be more of a mercy killing. I hear it’s a quality show, though—the competition is just fierce.

Meanwhile, Naked Fireman, the short drama filling some time before Chief Kim arrives, managed some decent numbers at 5.2%. New kid on the block, disaster mystery drama Missing 9, premiered to slightly underwhelming numbers, but again, it’s up against some stiff competition in the form of Legend of the Blue Sea, which finally broke that 20% ceiling with its Thursday episode. Huzzah!

And over on the weekend, it looks like the weeklong wait for The Lonely Shining Goblin paid off, since it got its highest numbers yet with its finale. That’s very impressive for cable, and more so for screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, who has cemented herself as the hitmaker of our time.

Btw for those who don't know tvn is airing 2 special goblin episodes in February.

Since they have already done a recap episode so we might get a lot of unseen footage. Yes!!!

With Voice rating, the cable dramas now can compete to the main network ratings. 5% seems to reachable for cable while there are more and more low rating in the main networks.

Voice decided to change the time slot for Goblin final. somehow I hope the main networks can do this too. Its quite sad for some dramas that has to compete with strong ratings.

I think it was a good decision to change the timeslot for epi 3. Epi 4 was 3.226 , lower than epi 4 but better than epi 1&2. Hopefully it will keep increasing.

That is because both TVN and OCN are owned by the same company CJ E&M, so no point fighting with yourself over the ratings.

Goblin finished on a very very good note! I do wonder what the numbers would have been if it were in a public broadcasting station. Congratulations to the cast and crew! Enjoy the reward vacation in Phuket (still wishing for Na PD to kidnap them hehe). I hope to see the cast in more projects, hopefully in dramaland again.

Congrats to RDTK cast and crew as well for ending with a bang. I'm sure they enjoyed their reward vacation in Cebu. I hope to see YYS in a rom-com next.

I love the leads too. Their acting is good. The female lead Jung In Sun is so pretty and talented though. First time watched her in Mirror of The Witch, she was good. Hope can see her more in another projects this year.

I haven't watched this yet but I think the lead guy once posed shirtless for a hunk calendar or something like that to pay some bills and that's enough to follow him and be ~scandalous~.

The exact rating for Voice is 5.406%, so it should be 5.4%?

The same goes with Introverted Boss as it should be 3.0% on Monday as its exact rating on that day is 2.967%?

That made Voice the highest rated drama for OCN right? Congratulation Voice cast!

Hope it will gate higher... For me so far It's really good. From the writing, directing, and acting. Baek Sung Hyun, Jang Hyuk and actor / actress as being criminal / victim is freakin good. I hope they cast better female lead though, because it her roles looks meaty and it would be more awsome to act with better actress... but well.. no complain.

Voice beat 38 task force in ratings!!? wow . Episode 3 - was better than 1st week episodes.

So biggest show of 2016 following the criteria of ratings - Dots,Romantic Doctor and Goblin.

I personally found Goblin mediocre content.

I expected more from missing 9 but well It will fill the Void of Blue Sea from Next week so 2nd week ratings gonna show the real audience who are actually interested in it.

Father I'll Take Care of You - Well I hope it reaches 15% ratings by 35th episode. By that time Gap Soon will be no more.

The idea of voice beating task 38.... Thats why a shows ratings matter so much. Not just to be a hit in its time slot but bec it attracts viewers to check out other shows of the channel.

Similarly with goblin, the other shows on tvn now have some sort of a built in audience willing to check them out.

After Our Gab Soon, SBS will air Unnie Is Alive which come from hit makjang writer, (who wrote the script of My Daughter, Geum Sa Wol and Jang Bo Ri which rating reach 30%).
Also, with a weekend drama by MBC. 15% also is a failure.

Required fields are marked *

It's hard to compare by the ratings but in terms of SNS hype and media coverage I think Goblin=DOTS in Korea but DOTS>Goblin internationally.

Most people were anticipating both shows because of Kim Eun Sook. DOTS had the Songs, an interesting premise and terrestrial tv advantage. Goblin's fantasy romance pitch was interesting too with a solid cast, plus the fact that TVN (and CJ's studio) had been producing quality drama, but Gong Yoo's successful movies in 2016 also had something to do with the initial hype for the drama. He isn't a hallyu star but he has always been quite popular in Korea since he made his transition to a serious movie actor. Both shows gave major career boosts to the main cast members. SJK became a mega hallyu star, KGE was able to shed off a lot of hate from the Cheese in the Trap saga.

Both shows were sold to overseas streaming services and cable. But we all know China pays (or used to) the highest amount for streaming rights. DOTS aired simultaneously in China to huge fanfare but Goblin couldn't because of the THAAD issue/pre-production issue. Without the Chinese simulcast there was quite a visible lack of social media marketing in Mainland media for Goblin, even though the show was trending high among the kdrama fans and the Weibo/Douban/Weixin users.

I must be living under a rock, I didn't know Gong Yoo is a Hallyu star, is he very popular outside Korea?

0

No I haven't been living under a rock. I lived in Asia and worked periodically in Greater China in the fashion industry doing trend research. He isn't a huge hallyu star prior to this show if you track social media trends and search rates outside of Korea. Old kdrama fans remember him from Coffee Prince and he started gaining more exposure with Train to Busan, but he never had a huge following like the major Hallyu stars.

0

Gong Yoo is a superstar in Korea, but outside Korea, Song Couple is more popular. He was popular because of Coffee Prince, but then.. when we compared him with SJK and SHK, we know who's more popular...

and i'm definitely living under a rock or something, hahaha... i watched dramas since very very young. since Cha In Pyo was still damn popular :D

Hi kanz

Thanks. I had looked up Daum and Naver.

I think the answer is yes and no. No if we just consider the cable platform number. Yes if we consider subscription platform statistics in addition to cable platform number.

Just a question, not a rant, why do we dismissed the rating that includes subscription platform statistics in addition to cable platform number?

Some viewers might not be that financially capable to subscribe the whole tvN channel, so they might decide to just pay for whichever tvN show that they watch which is a cheaper option. Maybe this is their way to at least support the show even though they aren’t capable to subscribe the whole channel but unfortunately they aren’t counted in the cable platform number.

This isn’t the case for Goblin alone, it includes other cable shows like Voice which lead to the 5.406% and 5.7% for its third episode.

Let’s imagine if Voice passed 20% for its finale episode and people dismissed its validity just because it only get 15% for its cable platform number, that will be unfortunate right?

Sorry if I’m incorrect. Please correct me if I am.

I wonder how it feels to be KES and the director..

two super mega hits in the same year, setting a record in the same year.

Changing history for both public and cable channel..

And gotta say, KES must really love gong yo.. because clearly she put in a lot of effort to write this drama well for him to accept..

( PS: although slightly worried for the other DOTS writer or shud we say original writer with his man to man.. if it doesn't click or hovers around that 5% rating)

I think that's her strength, to be able to know what exactly audience wants and how to create trends/hit.
When SeGa aired, almost everyone fell in love with Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin's character).
When Heirs aired, it's also very popular and become parodies everywhere.
When DOTS aired, everyone and their mother want to meet a soldier like Yoo Si Jin or Seo Dae Young.
And when Goblin aired, everyone (including me) wishfully pray for a Goblin or even Grim Reaper. LOL

KES dramas are usually hits. Lovers in Paris is still being parodied every now and then even though the drama was aired 13 years ago with an unsatisfactory ending. The ratings for Lovers in Paris averaged at 41.3%, with the highest rating of 57.6%. This is the drama which makes her famous.

Her next drama, Lovers in Prague, averaged at 26.1%. The last of the Lovers trilogy, "Lovers", averaged at 17.2%.

After the Lovers Trilogy, her next drama, On Air, averaged at 20.7%. The following year, City Hall, averaged at 16.5%.

In 2010 - 2011, Secret Garden, achieved an average of 26.9%. This is followed by A Gentleman's Dignity which averaged at 20.0%. We then have The Heirs which averaged at 16.7%.

And then last year, we had DOTS, which averaged at 28.58% and hitting its peak at 38.8%, despite starting with only 12.7%.

KES is always a hitmaker and I think she is more or less used to the stress since even a horrible drama like The Heirs can receive immense attentio.

I don't think she's feeling immense pressure at all. Having hit dramas is nothing new.

Both KES and Lee PD hit the jackpot with two mega hits! I do wonder how they feel now? lol They must be really pressured for their next project.

KES wanted Gong Yoo as her lead for the past five years. Her persistence paid off and she did seem to have put a lot of effort on Goblin story and Shin's character if we compare it with her previous works. It's her best so far.

This is a well-deserved win for tvN, and I hope to see more amazing k-dramas from them in this year of 2017!

I'm so curious about next drama of Kim Eun Sook. Which of channel she will choose? SBS, KBS, tvN or even MBC, jTBC?

Kim Eun-sook was a SBS writer but I highly doubt she'll go back to SBS. They picked "Six Flying Dragons" in favor of her "DotS" because it was so expensive. KBS was willing to invest in it and it paid off big time.
Loyalty is a big deal. I'd be surprised if she goes back to SBS. I hope she stays with tvN. They have the money to keep her. Maybe she'd do a drama with KBS again. She hasn't done a drama with MBC but I'm sure they'd love to have her.

Right now, anyone with a business brain would want to invest in her dramas. Doesn't matter which station is going to broadcast it.

If she wants to do a drama with MBC, I'm sure they'd have no problem funding it. They are not actually poor. They have been around longer than SBS.
I think they've been playing it safe lately.

MBC used to be the top dog in ratings back in the 1990s to early 2000s. (The golden age of television). They have 5 dramas on the top 10 highest rated dramas of all time in Korea.

People are saying like SBS had a choice....
The couldn't afford DOTS, it's not like they didn't want it... KBS can because it's national channel that have Government back up... If you notice Korea Gov was really supporting DOTS at time.
KES joined CJ so I can see her working more with TVN in the future... Goblin is just the start.

I will give Goblin -7.5/10.. Enjoyable show to watch overall, sometimes the storyline was a little bit boring. But the last 3 episodes made up for it.

Voice is awesome show so far and yes well done for the rating ? just continue to be a good show. I hope it can hit 6%.

Our Gabsoon -writer sure is consistent from the beginning to make most of characters hateful (but somewhat so relatable and too real life stories. Admit it or not, like it or not, there are people like the characters in this drama around us.) I see no point extend it up to 60 episodes, just add extra 4 episodes are more than enough.

Enjoyed watching Naked Fireman surprisingly.. maybe it's refreshing for a change, most of it was predictable yet it keep me entertained and wanting to verify whether is my guesses correct or how would they turn the table around..

due to it being 4 ep, stories were simple and straight to the point where every things moved at a quick pace (before I know it, i was at the end of the episodes already.. been a Long time since I sit through and watched 1 episodes at one go without pauses.. it really suck u in and keep u tight on the chair every moment..)

So off I went to watch Naked Fireman, Missing 9 and Voice. All are great (so far). As for Hwarang and Introverted Boss I'm dropping them. I just don't find myself being liking these 2 shows.

I am glad Goblin ended on such a high note, what a lovely fantasy romance with a new character I will forever consider as romantic Goblin was sexy as the day is long, lovely. This show made me love me some Grim Reaper and ET was such lovely heroine, I loved the show from beginning to end. Kudos the writer, production team, hair dresser, set creators and an amazing cast. Each actor did their thing creatively, and the side stories were touching also. What I loved about this show, I would think back to a scene, and go "AHA" each scene really mattered and that is what I love about this writer.

Is Missing9 going to be like Weightlifting Fairy when it comes to ratings? I hope not, because i really like the drama just how well I liked Weightlifting, although still the best drama for 2016-2017 for me.
Please KDrama gods, let Show get what it deserves.

I hope not. I don't expect high rating, between 6-7% is good enough. Of course the higher is the better. With Saimdang will come into the picture, i think both Missing 9 & Chief Kim will suffer a bit in rating.I just hope they can at least dont go under 5%. We don't know if Saimdang will be good or not later (hopefully good) but Lee Young Ae is one of the most favourite actress in Korea and this is comeback to kdrama after more than 10 years.

I'm sad that romantic doctor teacher kim is end but I'm glad that goblin is end this week because I'm looking forward to Tomorrow with you.

So happy with Voice ratings!

Switching between Signal and this drama, GAH, I feel so angry with the politics. What makes me even more frustrated is that I'm sure it happens in real life as well - the under the table dealings, cover ups for incompetence and good old corruption.
Sigh... On a brighter note, can't wait for Tomorrow with You which replaces Goblin.

You know you've been away from kdrama for too long when you return and the first title that jumps into your eye is Naked Fireman. :-)

Say no more! Sign me up! But I do have a question: Shouldn't it be Naked Eternal Legend of the Flower Boy Fireman?

Shiet everything finished.
I guess the dramas I have to look forward to now are Saimdang, Man To Man & While You Were Sleeping.

I'm so happy Goblin concluded so successfully. I feel like I came out respecting Kim Eun Sook now lol, for great writing, for courting Gong Yoo, for agreeing to Lee Dong Wook's advances, for wooing Yoo In Na & Kim Go Eun & Yook Sung Jae. Congratulations to all the cast & crew of this beautiful drama, success well deserved, hard work well repaid. Seems the [drama]gods are not so cheap after all.
