Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 2-8, 2017

There’s no end to how high Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim can go, it seems, with the show reaching an all-time series high of 25.1% this week. Despite the stiff competition, Hwarang carved out a solid 8.0% for itself, and continues to do fairly well week to week. Poor Night Light still remains in last place despite being a solid show, and seems doomed to hover below the 5% mark for as long as Romantic Doctor is airing. (Which could be a while yet, depending on what they decide about that extension.)

Now that the awards ceremony pre-emptions are over and done with, all the Wednesday-Thursday shows resumed with their even episodes first, making for a confusing episode count. But the ratings for each of the mid-week shows have pretty much stayed the same, with Legend of the Blue Sea still clearly in first—but at a high 18.3%, it’s doing very well. Underdogs Oh My Geum-bi and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju are nearing their ends now, but both have been performing admirably despite going up against a blockbuster like Blue Sea. Honestly, I’ll be sad to see all three of the shows go in this time slot—it’s been a great drama cycle overall, hasn’t it?

Over on the weekend, Solomon’s Perjury made a return after a weeklong absence to about the same numbers it’s been getting from the start (though that drop below 1% isn’t favorable, even in the scope of JTBC’s relatively low-ish numbers). The Lonely Shining Goblin was the one to see an even bigger hike: 15.0% is insane for a cable show, and while that means it’s broken its own personal record, maybe it’ll break some others soon enough.

Inhabe noticed that dramabeans takes numbers from different source then agb nielsen. The ratigns to which everyone accept as official are from them or from TMS ( they are known as less accurate) and DB numbers are always different from what I see on koreandrama or nilsen site. I wonder where do they get them.

I'm wondering about this myself . Maybe they mixed up the numbers for Seoul with The Nationwide numbers? There's no way Goblin has reached 15% yet.

There are mainly 2 sources of korean tv rating reports: AGB Nielsen and TNmS. According to AGB (which I check regularly), Goblin averaged 13.9% on Friday and 13.7% Saturday.

As for TNmS, the tvN network got 15.7% ratings Friday and 16.3% ratings Saturday. I couldn't find a more specific rating for cable TV from the website.

I'm not quite sure where dramabeans takes their ratings from. Overall though no rating report is going to be completely accurate. What can be certain though is that Goblin is doing far better than the majority of the dramas airing on public networks.

RDTK is doing very very well which is no surprise with its compelling story and solid acting across the board. I wonder if Hwarang can rise to break 10% after RDTK ends, but then Jisung's drama, which looks rather promising, will replace it.

As for Goblin, I do wonder with four more episodes left, if it will it be able to break the only one with the highest record of 18.8% which is R88. Nonetheless, Goblin is already a success and I'm happy for the cast and crew (especially to Gong Yoo- finally a good drama + a hit after years of dramaland LOA and Dongwook- after lackluster lead dramas). Their hardwork paid off.

Reply was a family drama, so it had attracted bigger audience, in that regards 18% was expected. While goblin is more of a romance genre so the viewers are mostly younger generation I think. But still the rating hasn't been bad till now.

well, hwarang did get 13% in its 3rd ep when RDTK wasnt airing, so im wondering if the rating will go higher once its finished or not considering its holding its own every week against RDTK. but we will see whether or not defendant continues RDTK streak

I dont know why but my spideysenses thks Hwarang will go into double digit ratings once RDTK ends. Jisung is a great actor but theres sth about RDTK that is really pulling in the domestic viewes.

I do hope Goblin can break more records- it really is a narratively different drama- it took its time building scenes sometimes that it can come off as dragging its feet but i love the mood of the show the way the drector is taking us. So heres to hoping it reaches a coveted new high

But this TVN drama feels very different from her previous works at the main stations. Frankly speaking, I have never liked DOTS. I watched it cos it made me happy, but it never made me think nor feeeeel for the characters. This is especially so for the main story line - I didn't feel engaged. Goblin is a very pleasant surprise from KES as it is a very deep and mature show unlike DOTS. It ponders over life and death and makes me think. Even the story plot is stronger. I think I am going to be bashed by DOTS here but yeah just my opinions. Yes, DOTS was shallow and many times, its moments were forceful. Goblin's moments were heartfelt/ache, sensitive and mature.

One thing in common for all her dramas though - the bromances are always very well written. In DOTS, what pulled me though was the bromance. The same for Goblin. And also, for Secret Garden (between the secretary and the male lead). Goblin's bromance reached a whole new level for me. It is endearing. The grim reaper who takes lives away vs the goblin who saves lives.

I am also pleasantly surprised that Goblin is the work of KES. It is so much richer than her previous works. And yes, she writes bromance far better than romance in my opinion.

Geum-Bi is the winner of Wed-Thu in my opinion. The return defines the success
Production Budget + Marketing Costs of other shows are more much more compare to Our Fair Lady So i think whatever was invested in Geum-Bi gave better margin to the channel as well as production company.

Goblin is another of overhyped show. I have tried many but found no hyped show living upto its name. Well the thing that matters is 'The Ratings' and Romantic Doctor and Goblin has achieved well withing their range.

I saw in some chart Father I'll Take Care of You marching ahead and touching 14%

So I finally catch up with Night Light and it is still slow. With great casts, this kind of writing really disappointing. I hope they get it done at epi 16 and let the casts move on.

The highlight of this drama are womance between Lee Yo Won and Uee. I mean i dont mind seeing them together in bath tub and drinking wine together (remember in earlier episode, there was scene of LYW in the bath tub). Poor Jin Goo, looks like he serves no purpose in this drama. Better role in next project ok.

I honestly was one of those who felt that Goblin-Eun Tak relationship was kinda like an uncle and his lovely niece.

However, in ep.12, she turned to be a college student so we can see her without her high school uniform anymore that makes it different now. She looks and acts more mature which I like very much. Looking forward to how the romance will grow now as everything has been revealed.

Kim Go Eun dare to look "different" aka NATURAL, something I sooooo admire and love her for. But, its's also easy to do because she's an amazing actress. I loved her instantly from Cheese and the Trap and every single project I saw her in since then has never been a disappointment. I hope she's the new direction for the next generation of Korean actresses to follow because I am sick of seeing beautiful but frozen faces on screen.

I'm so sad about wlkbj's rating.it's so unfair when this show gives so much to viewers.everything is on point.the directing, acting and writing is so spot on.tbh, every episode i always said that 'this is the best episode for me' and then show give another episode that is better than the previous one.i swear there is no slump or no dragging with this drama.

Also,i'm sorry if i ranted about wlkbj here,it's just because i just finished watching ep.15 again half an hour ago,up until now my eyes just starts leaking everytime i thought of JJH's heartbreak with adopted mom. And i don't cry over dramas.can't even cry with BJ.how, why NJH turns out this way?he's so good he looks like he didn't mind how he might look crying.

I should stop thinking about ratings and just flood their igs with thank you messages for this gem

I feel the complete opposite. I watched because of all of the comments on here but dropped at epi 14 because I realized I dislike everything about the show. Terrible casting decisions and terrible written characters. To me, the show is the most basic of all stories, overacted. Fans of the show one here are very protective of and invested in the show and not realizing others are not seeing what they're seeing. You see low rating for the show as an injustice, I see it's the number they deserve.

I'm quite similar in some dramas that I watched because of the rave from DB community except I did not end up disliking the dramas. I just felt meh about them. I picked up SKL but dropped 2x and then I read a lot of good things about it so I decided to pick it up again. I did manage to finish after the 3rd time of trying, but I did not feel what most here felt and I found myself hitting the FF button. I like both SIG and NJH, but the pair did not wow me. It was the same for 1%. A lot raved about the OTP but they're just ok for me. I will pick up Fairy soon after my marathon of Squad 38.

It is delight to watch since it is youthful romcom but it is far to compete among the best drama, imo. The highlight of this drama is about the OTP, but honestly i will like to see more of friendship, the training etc. Overall it is enjoyable to watch. About the rating, if they are not competing against LOTBS, the highest they can achieved maybe around 8-9%. Maybe.

I think the more I watch it the more the more I hate the original casting decision. To me, having an obviously beautiful girl and asked her to "gain weight" (it's in quotation because putting her in big clothes does not equal gain weight) completely and utterly undermine the one message that the show has to deliver: (girls) be happy with yourself and your skill is all that matters. I can see the actress tries but her idea of showing that she's a "normal" girl is to contantly contort her face and it only makes her a giant "try hard" in my eyes because I can see clearly that she's a fantastic looking girl trying so hard to show that she's just any regular Joe. I hate it!

I think had they given the role to one of her best friends, I would have a better time appreciating it. As of now, to me, the show is going itself a giant diservice by not doing what it preaches essentially. Plus, none of the side characters make any sense to me. It's like all of their problems appear and disappear with zero to little explaination. Within the same genre, Age of Youth is light years ahead and away.

Others clearly enjoy it and I am glad for them. It's not for me.

Not trying to change your opinion, because all of us have different tastes :) but I just have one comment: I don't think in WFKBJ they are trying to pass the girl as ugly. There is even one moment when the doctor calls her "the model" and the lead is always calling her pretty. There is more focus on the girl not feeling attractive because of what she does, which is not the same as not being beautiful. For me, as someone who has a traditional masculine job, I can feel her struggle. Even if you look good, knowing what you do can make you less attractive in the eyes of men, I know it is real because I have experienced it...dunno, maybe I liked the story because it felt relatable...

0

Required fields are marked *

So true. I'm way past my 20s and also hate sports, but WFKBJ felt really relatable ... just for the simple feelings of being a girl, the feelings of insecurity for any girl growing up, not just a "normal" girl or a "pretty" girl. I'm not a big fan of LSK's portrayal, but overall I think it worked out for the production as a whole. All things in consideration, I would categorize it as one of the best dramas I've watched.

0

"It’s like all of their problems appear and disappear with zero to little explaination."

Exactly. The only highlight of this drama is OTP cute romance. This is second drama after Healer which has so many fans here yet i cannot seem to really like or enjoy it like others. But i like WFKBJ a little bit more than the other one, because I didnt drop it. I used to treat it as my weekly vitamin but after few weeks, no more. It was just like SKL which i thought as my weekly vitamin but after the show went half i became bored.

Guess it is about preference and taste.

I suspect that liking WF has to do a lot with your own experiences. It is clear that this show hits home for a number of viewers, who not only like it but love it dearly. For others it seems it might be indifferent.
For the ones who like it, it's not something that we watch for the thrills or the adventure, but because it feels warm and mood-uplifting. Maybe it is because it brings memories from college days and lots of laughs together? Cannot really pinpoint the key that makes it a perfect cocktail for me. :D
Anyway, I am also surprised of seeing people looking down on the show. You might not like it, but I don't think it can be denied that there is a lot of work behind it, and it is a great achievement to engage people this way with something so simple. :)

Thank you. I was curious to see effect of a pre produced show and ratings. I know cinderella and four knights was pre produced but didn't go very well

Yeah, but it did miles better than Entourage in the same time slot. For a cable drama 3 -4% ratings is considered to be quite good.

So happy for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. Episode 17 was excellent! Well deserving of the high ratings.

I'm glad Hwarang is pulling in some solid numbers too. This show is quite enjoyable. I think they could take the top spot after RDTK ends, but I'm not sure how they will fare against Ji Sung's Defendant.

Over my winter break I have lost interest in kdramas but surprisingly still checked out RDTK. My brother and dad caught me watching an ep and after a few mins took a seat and started watching it with me. And now they are the ones asking for new episodes! Love this show.

Every episode become more interesting, this show not focus on romance only, but every romance scene become more precious. We can see their growth as a doctor, and how their romance blossom.

Currently watching Hwarang, DRTK, WLFKBJ and Goblin. I normally don't watch period kdramas but since the previous week there was this pre-emp thing going on n many dramas only air one epi n the King weekend so I was bored n just started on Hwarang n I like it !! The only complaint was the childish fighting among the royal (bone breed) aka the supporting cast. I love the 3 main leads !

WLFKBJ is coming to an end this week. While we will miss the SWAG COUPLE, I'm sure we are also excited in the upcoming dramas which are quite anticipating like Missing 9 and also Defendant that will air after RDTK (if I do rmb correctly) :)

RDTK just keeps getting better and better when I feel there's really nothing more to be desired. Episode 17 was flawless, and 18 surpasses the expectation yet again.

Did I miss a memo on the preemption of Monday dramas? I've been waiting for Hwarang and Romantic Doctor but couldn't find them anywhere.

Why is no one praising LOTBS and its rating??! It's rrreeealllly gooooood... I think this is the best act LMH did alongside City Hunter.Jeon Ji Hyun comedic antics are on point. Plus, the cameos in this show are gold.. I hope I'm not alone here!!!

P.S. You won't believe me if i say i already collected a jar full of pink pearls!?? Hehehe
