Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 23-29, 2017

First things first: I’ve been getting the year wrong ever since the new year started. My bad. (But seriously, where did the time go? I’m still looking for it!) Now that we are firmly entrenched in the year of our lord 2017, we’ve got a whole slew of new dramas to go with it, and since this week saw the Lunar New Year, technically, it’s not so bad that I forgot it was 2017 up until now… right?

Defendant took the spot previously occupied by Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, and seemed to take some of its high ratings too, since it started out with a hefty 14.5%, and nearly reached 15% with its second episode. That left poor Night Light to finish with a whimper, while Hwarang still remains steadily in the double digits. Introverted Boss could be considered underperforming by tvN’s usual standards, but at the time slot its airing during, we can’t be expecting blockbuster numbers. Still, I wonder if the 2% the show’s pulling in is making anyone sweat over at the network. Maybe, just maybe, it could be a cue for them to cut their episode lengths down by a hair.

The drama schedule has still been wonky due to all the previous pre-emptions, which meant that Legend of the Blue Sea had only its finale to air this week, which clocked a respectable 17.9%. Missing 9, which is admittedly a very different show, isn’t doing very well, considering that the wacky and new kid on the block, Chief Kim, logged in higher numbers. But both shows paled in comparison to the much hyped Saimdang, Light’s Diary, which aired a double header on Thursday to keep its airing schedule current, and pulled in very, very good numbers.

Because of the aforementioned Lunar New Year, a couple weekend shows like Our Gap-soon and Voice were pre-empted, and likewise, there’ll be no Introverted Boss next week. But there are still more premieres to come, so bring it on, dramaland!

True. I have seen 3 episodes. Its pretty good. Though I have to wonder - why is everyone color coordinated in white and camel ?? Wasn't anyone wearing any other color when they crashed ?

One of the theories I read is that since it was a recollection of memories of Bong Hee, she doesn;t exactly remember what everyone was wearing so it was shown like that. When Bong Hee and Joon oh found the suitcases washed out on the beach, she explicitly remembers the colors of the clothes inside hence the colors.

I was watching the Missing 9 Special the other day and I think they mentioned that they specifically wanted to colour coordinate everyone haha but not sure what's the reason.

Haven't started watching Missing 9 but the premise sounds super interesting for me.. actually I love Robinson Crusoe kind of stories so much.. that too with a group of different kind of people , their relationship developments.. it will be fun to watch on how they survive together.. But there is no much hype about this show..

So is Missing 9 like Lost: Korea?

I know little about it, but that's the first thing that popped into my head at the descriptions I've heard.

I agree. I'm loving missing 9, and fine the humor a relief from the tension. There is also quite a bit of mystery and a sinister undercurrent. People keep mentioning lost but I can't help but think of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None- also titled Nine Little Indians. The mere fact that there are inially 9 survivors is enough of a parallel for me to start reading into things haha.

defendant is amazing and I'm glad it's doing well.

I'm also an disappointed that introverted boss isn't doing better. I'm really enjoying the main character.

Does it feel like the slump after all the heavy duty buzz of goblin, lobs, romantic doctor ?

I'm watching

Goblin reruns > defendant > missing 9

Voice - dropped became heroine - strangely I hope it does well bec JH and BM :)
Shy boss - dropped bec heroine is omg! Annoying

Watched saimdang - but it doesn't look interesting. Where is the hook? Usually there is one central event which a show focuses on but this show is what - a general life story ??? ... Puzzled .

I don't think so, many popular drama start under 20% then picking up

#DefendantProtectionSquad

Mermaid and Saimdang almost have same rating too (poor both of the queen choosing that kind of drama tho ;A;)

And no weekend drama this week in tvN after Goblin so B-D

I didn't mean a slump in ratings both defendant and saimdang have great ratings.

I meant the buzz. The crack factor. General excitement in blogs/tumblr/sns etc ... Everything seems sort of muted now.

True. That's why I decided to switch to cdramas for the meantime. I started with Love O2O and suprisingly, I love it. Plus the main lead is super handsome.

What a coincidence! I started watching Love O2O just yesterday and I love it too!
I think both the male and female lead are extremely cute, but what really gets me is the portrayal of the gaming world. It's so fun and so well done!
My only issue - but only at the beginning - was with the sound. Their voices sometimes sound so strange... As if it wasn't done really professionally or something.
But I got used to it by the third episode, so no big deal. Plus with such a cast. And so much fun. And the bromance!

0

My problem with cdramas is the dubbing of the voices. Sometimes, it just ruins the mood of the drama. But when a drama is as good as Love O2O, I won't mind. But honestly, Zheng Shuang/Wei Wei's real voice is so much better than her dubber. I've seen her in a reality show Divas Hit The Road 2 with Xiao Nai/Yang Yang.

It definitely is quiet right now. I couldn't get into any of the dramas with buzz last year and felt kind of left out, so I don't mind the lull so much lol.

You're not alone.
I'm re-watching Goblin, watching Missing 9 and FITCOY.
Unfortunately, this week is my midyear break. Two weeks back, during exams, I had Coffee prince and Biscuit teacher to re-watch and 108 episodes of Seo hyun jin's King's daughter Su baek hyang.

King's Daughter Su Baek Hyung is one of the most underrated dramas I've ever seen. Which is weird because everyone I've seen who actually watches it loves it. It was my introduction to Seo Hyun Jin and she totally nailed her character. Plus her chemistry with Jo Hyun-jae's just adorbs. The plot's pretty great too.

I hope you love it :)

I'm at episode 81 of King's Daughter right now! Was so glad to see this show mentioned here. For a non saguek watcher who is only in this for Seo Hyun Jin, I am mighty surprised by how gripping the storyline is. And SHJ's performance... How is she so consistently fabulous like this???

Kinda sad but not really, used to following Solomon update and even watching in raw because the subs hardly come until Wednesday the next week. But somehow stopping it at episode 7 because it's kinda too slow and they keep going in circle somehow ;A;

Still cackling when Baek Chulmin been said as Lee Minho doppelganger tho, all the cast are so precious, and Seo Youngjo is a bae, but... there're better drama lol

But almost same rating as Entourage is a bit too much ;A;

It wouldnt make much different, isnt it? Most of them either have good rating or good media about it.

Most media talking about a drama they talk about peak ratings not average rating.

It all depends on what are we ranking them for. Maybe Chi wanted to rank them according to Peak Ratings? But I agree with you that average ratings is a better indication of how a drama fared over the whole run.

Looking at this, I couldn't help noticing how lackluster 2015 looked compared to 2016.

I was one of those who didn't mind Yong Pal much, I actually enjoyed the first 6 eps a lot. I put it down to inexperienced writer who ran out of steam. But after K2, my opinion of the writer dropped all the way down. Song Yoon Ah was the only bright spark. JCW and Yoona were unimaginably dull.

For 2016, I was surprised to see how high Remember - War of the Sons is up on the list. I disliked the show but it did very well without the hype. I haven't watched Defendant but I am guessing that shows like Defendant, Remember - War of the Sons and even Secret Love do well without hallyu names and hype because they managed to get viewers hooked on seeing the underdogs or aggrieved parties get justice. There's also a lot of makjang which Korean viewers love.

For example 2016, average rating doesnt make much different of the top drama. High rating doesnt mean better quality but at least it shows enough buzz about it.

Thanks for the list! I'll pick a kdrama to watch from these lists now.

Come to think of it, King of Baker was a very good and addictive kdrama actually. No wonder it has the highest viewership ratings since 2010.

Are these the averaged ratings of each kdrama, or the highest ratings that each kdrama reached?

Thank you for the list above. I think AVERAGE RATINGS must be use as a parameter to measure how popular a drama is to households. Some dramas tend to have high ratings on its Pilot Week (like Civil Servant, Jackpot) but falter after succeeding episodes due to hype or the story isn`t engaging that viewers tend to shift their attention to other dramas. Mostly have high ratings after its first few weeks of airing because viewers find the drama interesting (example W, Lawyer- Mr. Joe). While other dramas had a consistently high ratings (DOTS, MLFTS) and low ratings (Time we were not in love, Comeback Mister) from start to end. Some had its peak ratings when their competitors had finished airing (Gumiho after Baker King ended, She Was Pretty after Yongpal ended)

You will never find an article talking about average ratings, people care about the highest, not average.

Rating doesnt mean popular or quality. Many dramas have low rating but popular, it's also depends on the competition as well. Average rating doesnt tell you anything about how is the run of the drama. A drama start high finish low, start low finish high, both still can the same average rating.

Rating is just one way of measurement. It's something no one can predict or decide.

The list simply just for fun, so anyone can pick a few name to watch.

awesome..

although given 3 of top 5 this year are doctor drama.. i honestly dread 2017.. but it already appears to be a saguek age (because saguek did well in 2015).. so does that mean 2018 will have heavy dose of doctors again? unless they flop to make CVs focus on other concepts?

This is awesome! Thanks for pulling all of these together. That was a lot of work. Great list to pull future watching from.

Tiny nitpick: 2013 is missing Secret. 18.9% peak, 13.7% avg. I only noticed because I remember at the time how people were amazed that it was beating Heirs. Which doesn't show just looking at peak numbers or averages, but I had fun just now looking up the numbers for both shows, and it wasn't until the week after Secret ended that Heirs jumped 5 points and broke 20%.

I wish cable dramas' ratings get incorporated on the list. It still baffles me that they use the same ratings for broadcast stations and cable stations. You can't do the same percentages since you can't really count the people who do not have cable. It's not that they didn't want to watch it, it's more like they can't watch it.

Missing 9 isn't doing good. Chief Kim will hit double digits soon.

Shy boss's ratings were better in 1st week.

Becky's Back 4 ep drama hit 10% mark. wow. It was the rare one to make me emotional at the end of episode 2.

I liked 1st episode of defendant but 2nd ep ruined much for me. This generic plot line taken from a soap opera and still it might be the 1st one to hit 20% this year

Looking after @chi's list i have dropped or rated below average the top-rated 5 shows of the year.

I know many beanies here love Chief Kim but I can't love it. Maybe cos of the huge factor in accounting n embezzled funds that made my head 'ache' from reminding me of work etc. And I've dropped My Introverted Boss early too. My eyesight have been blurry and eyes feeling tired so I guessed that is a warning sign to cut down on my kdrama-ing :(

I'm planning to start on Defendant during my long weekend of Lunar New Year and I've just saw that there is also a Voice Special Episode on Viu due to the preemption maybe.

Still loving Missing 9 and Voice of cos. Mystery thriller are always my cup of tea. But have to admit that the latest episode of Missing 9 has been quite confusing, but it's only at the early part of the drama so I guess we might not get the answers so soon.

Ahh, feeling sad with Solomon's Perjury's ratings. Haven't watched the final 2 episodes yet, but I'm sure they didn't deserve such low ratings they've been getting week after week.

'Introverted Boss could be considered underperforming by tvN’s usual standards, but at the time slot its airing during, we can’t be expecting blockbuster numbers.' But then again, weren't hits like Cheese In The Trap and Oh Hae Young Again shown during that timeslot?

Pretty sad that Voice is pre-empted...how do I survive another week thinking of that cliffhanger?

Yep AOH & CITT aired in the same slot. I feel like writer HeadsNo2 never really pay attention to cable tv rating trends especially at tvn. Rude Miss Young Ae which was previous drama at that time slot hovered between 2.2-2.6% so Introverted Boss is definitely doing bad currently. And Drinking Solo had many 4-5% ratings (which is very great since CITT ratings were 6-7%) yet writer HeadsNo2 never mentioned it.
Sorry writer HeadsNo2...

Agree, HeadsNo2 also don't care much about how rude KBS weekend drama had many years and great rating of MBC weekend dramas (but flop now), SBS weekend dramas increase rating now.
I'm sorry, but did you rate Night Light so high much time? I know you like that drama and want this have better ratings. But you spend time to talk about that every week, instead talking about other dramas.

Ouch at Introverted Boss.

Introverted Boss is similar to an older kdrama Heart To Heart (the lead gal copped herself in her small apartment all the time and has a serious social phobia and have to see a psychiatrist - lead guy) but at least the leads are fine to continue watching. I love its ending !

I think I made a correct decision not to start on Voice yet. I will after one or two weeks later. I know i cannot be patient when it comes to thriller. Unlike romcom /romance melodrama I can wait each week.

Saimdang : First two episodes were great. But lets wait for another few weeks to see how it goes.

Chief Kim : First two weeks were OK. Need sometime to adapt. Love Nam Goong Min and Junho is doing well. Maybe among the members of 2pm, he is the best when it comes to acting. But i like the fact that he branch out from usual role of idols. Suddenly I miss D. O, hope he will be back with any drama soon.

I am curious about how the Introverted Boss heroine is perceived in Korea. Do they find her annoying too? Is it why the kdrama gets such low ratings?

I don't know how they find Park Hye Soo in Introverted Boss but I think I have an idea based on knetz comments on her in Saimdang Light's Dairy. They were mostly criticizing her.

Required fields are marked *

What they said about her for Saimdang? When I looked at her, she really looks so green and too child like in this drama. I think maybe due to her physical and face. Even her pronounciation seems awkward.

I hope she will not suffer so much. I think she has the talents, but need to polish more. She is doing well in emotional scenes in Introverted Boss, Age of Youth or even Yong Pal. Maybe the role in Introverted Boss is too heavy for new comer like her.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, they were criticising her pronunciation. I think she proved in Age of Youth that she has potential, but perhaps it's too early for sageuk and her character in IB is poorly written imo, though her unconvincing performance doesn't help. I really like her, I hope she keeps growing and finds other roles that suit her and slowly expands her range. I totally agree that she nails emotional scenes, I think she's uncomfortable with comedy.

I hope she will keeps improve. She can act, she just needs time to polish her skill. Maybe playing secondary rolea for one or two years before landing the lead role will be beneficial for her.

It was as -yuyu said, they didn't like her pronunciation, her voice and her acting.

She does have a very low voice and although I don't understand Korean at all, I can kind of imagine why they criticize her pronunciation, there's something awkward about her speech. This problem is more pronounced in saeguk.

I loved her in Age of Youth and I want her to do well. Hopefully she won't suffer too huge a setback and improve from these.

To be fair, not every actress is a Seo Hyun Jin or Han Groo. Even the biggest names isn't a guaranteed success at this type of comedy.

Yes I hope she continue to improve. I think it has to do with her intonation and pronounciation in sageuk. As a starter she can act. I hope her agency won't push her to become leading lady when she is not even ready.

Seo Hyun Jin has years of experiences under her belt, and for Han Groo honestly i took few episodes as well to adapt with her in MND.

0

Totally agree with you guys, she is good in all but the writing in Boss and Saimdang so terrible. And his voice really is problem.
Sometime, i even think does it better if Park Hye Soo cast as Moon Lovers female lead (of course, change director too) ?

I dont think the writing is so terrible, of course flaws are there. But her acting also not something plausible either, but I understand since she is still new. Even actors after being a lead for several years still show crappy acting.

I don't know about her be a leading lady in Moon Lovers - she really need to work on her sageuk pronounciation before taking up next sageuk role.

I love her, and I really hope she will do well. She is not a bad actresa, she just need a role suitable qith her for now. Maybe she can do musical drama since she sings well. I think if she is casted in The Liar and The Lover maybe it will be better.

0

I'm not sure what they thought of the more recent episodes, but I did read quite a few comments criticising the heroine and Park Hye Soo's performance after episode one aired. The general sentiment is basically the same both in Korea and internationally.

The ratings aren't really low (I mean, it's not Entourage levels), but it's underperforming for sure especially compared to the writer/PD's previous shows. tvN probably expected much higher numbers.

Finally, double digit for Hwarang! At the same time, I'm also sad because Solomon's Perjury never really went over 1% during its run. At least it still told the story it wanted to tell, and also introduced a whole batch of new young actors to watch for.

To be honest, he really didn't have to do much acting/ expressions in the first two episodes. He had to look conflicted and pained, and I thought he was pretty okay at that.

The Grim Reaper premise and heroine are super cute though. I can't seem to get enough of Grim Reapers these days.

There is also a very cute, tiny puppy that I may be watching this show for. I love shows with dogs in it. :P

I did! I tuned it when I learned it has the same director/writer as Splash Splash Love, which I adored to pieces.

The feels are very similar with SSL when it comes to directorial style, even down to the OST. I really, really like this director's style. Kim Ji-hyun knows how to deftly handle scenes to bring out all the emotions, even the cheesy ones on paper turn out totally squee-worthy (like the last scene in episode 1).

It helps that the heroine is very cute and expressive. (She looks like a younger Han Hyo-joo who can act a tad bit better, imo.) Suho ain't bad as well. And he's totally goodlooking, if I may so myself. Their chemistry is also on point.

I recommend it to everyone who loved Splash Splash Love or those who are looking for a breezy, lighthearted, well-executed Grim Reaper romance. Granted it's just the first episode but I trust in this PD.

I didn't watch SSL but this show (Star of the Universe) I did watched. If I'm not wrong it actually consist of 3 short separate stories. Now first episode is about the first story between the 17 year old female grim reaper and the songwriter. I actually thought the lead gal looks like Lee Hana in High School King of Savvy though. I can't wait for episode 2. When will it be released ??! :)

Wasn't planning to check this out and would only tune in for Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Seul Gi's ones, but I will check this out now for Kim Ji Hyun PD! Splish Splash Love was like a long well-made MV, because it's so beautiful to look at with good OSTs.

A bit sad to hear it ony reaps 1% though, I am assuming it's really low as it's broadcasted in public station?

Ratings wise and buzz wise, yea. But I hope they don't stop what they're doing.

From short observation of what's recent, I feel like MBC is the public channel that is most willing to work with plots that deviate from what's trendy or standard.

Plus I'm just happy they were willing to work with and give the opportunity of lead roles to first-timer LSK and NJH (it's his 2nd, but), also YKS in upcoming Rebel Thief.

I second this sentiment. I think it's great that they're deviating from the usual Kdrama storylines. Some stories need to be told, not because they will generate money, but just because they're stories deserving to be shared to everyone.

I don't think any actress could have made Ro Woon's actions palatable, not even the beloved Park Bo Young. The problem here is the Hwan Ki character in being such an endearing, sympathetic character that the audience feels protective of and Yeon Woojin's talent in portraying him. He's not just shy and introverted, but has a debilitating social anxiety. It's not a personality trait but a disorder. I feel like I want to shout at everyone who misunderstands HwanKi or is dismissive of him. I hope they make Ro Woon his champion (like the OTP in protect the boss when the male lead was afraid of public speaking)

-Try to rate all dramas watching more strick. Ask yourself 'Why I should watch this? Can I don't watch it? Is it really mean to me?'
- Don't try to catch all new episodes (live streaming; raw version) if don't have time.
- Don't read comments like me if you think it's too wasting your time.
- Add some movies to your list (to rate dramas more strick).
- Try to watch other things on tv with your family, it's make our time more meaning.
- Try to ask that 'Is this dramas helpful for you?'. Did you used it anytime in your study?
I'm curious that why your school star so early. My school will star next week.( Feb 6th)

Really? I like Introvert Boss. I thought Park Hye Soo character is not that annoying, she kinda blunt, maybe people think she's rude. But she did that because of her prejudice toward her boss due to some incident relate to her sister. And I absolutely love her boss Yeen Woo Jin, I kinda relate his character, I am also a bit like him, although not that extreme. I think why the show is not that that well received because it kinda feel gloomy from the start because of the "incident." And maybe because they don't really fell relate with the issue of introvertness.

All viewers is love the male lead. But most of us think that the female lead so annoying and too easygoing, stupid too.
- How she can follow the male lead? What happens if he really is a bad guys, just like her thinks?
- Why she follow Yoon Park too all time, just 2 of them alone? He can drive to somewhere and do anything he want, i don't think she can handle it.
- She never try to believe in male lead but she force others believe her (final scene of ep 2).
- She too nosy and don't know how to read other people emoctions, glad to see she was slapped. Poor male lead, he is too good with her.

She deserved to be told off, but not slapped! I think she does get better by episode 4. The writing needs to focus more on her processing the grief over her sister's suicide.

The way it's written, I keep forgetting that she's there because her sister killed herself (and her mom seems to be gone too...) and not just causing chaos.

But anyway does anybody realize this director has this pattern of amazing drama (marriage not dating), not-so-good drama(super daddy yeol), amazing drama(oh haeyoung), and I guess this one would be the not-so-good one although I love Yeon Woojin! he's hillarious!
