Lee Jun-ki, Kim Ah-joong up for Korean drama remake of Criminal Minds

It’s been a while since the Korean drama remake of American crime procedural Criminal Minds was first announced, but casting is now underway with offers out to Lee Jun-ki (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) and Kim Ah-joong (Wanted) to headline. I think it’ll be nice to see Lee Jun-ki taking a break from historical dramas to do a contemporary one—2013’s Two Weeks was his last—especially since he does so well in action crime thrillers.

The original series began in 2005 and is currently in its twelfth season on CBS. It’s your average cop procedural, but this one focuses on a special task force in the FBI made up of profilers, who deal in criminal psychology and solve crimes by looking at the life and mind of the suspect rather than the crime. Lee Jun-ki and Kim Ah-joong are currently considering leading roles, though the exact characters they’ll play haven’t been specified, and it’s not clear whether they’ll have direct counterparts to the American show, or if the remake will just adapt the concept with new characters.

Production company Taewon Entertainment (IRIS, Athena) is behind the remake, and after acquiring the rights from ABC Studios and Disney Media Distribution, they held an open script contest for an adaptation of any episode from Seasons 1 through 7 of Criminal Minds. It was originally stated that they wanted to adapt the show into a multi-season format as well, but that might be a stretch, at least until it airs and proves itself a successful adaptation in the first place.

Kim Ah-joong just came off of crime thriller Wanted, where I hear she wasn’t all that convincing as a mom whose child was kidnapped; I can mostly take her or leave her in shows, but she might actually be better suited for a cop or special agent. Lee Jun-ki rarely disappoints (if anything it’s the projects that disappoint), so while police procedurals sound very boring on paper to me, if he signs on, all bets are off.

Criminal Minds will shoot this spring and be fully pre-produced, and is planning to air in the fall on KBS.

What I like:
-LEE.JUN.KI.
-Criminal Minds. Favorite criminal series. Makes me wonder & excited which character suits for LJK. I'm thinking Dr. Reid (love!) or maybe Derek (another love!).

What makes me pause:
-KBS?
So we are not getting all those gory gruesome details like other thriller/criminal procedures dramas then? I sure hope they wont starts throwing love-line in it.
-I'm not fond to Iris & athena teams. But since they will open script contest, we probably save? *starts a prayer circle*

i love Criminal Minds during the time when Gideon was still in it. By the time Hotchner left the show, so did I. But its really one of the best US shows that i do watch- and that intensity in evy episode.

LJG is very pro-Western- he enjoyed himself thoroughly filimg for Resident Evil. I thk being based off Criminal Minds definitely this drama would attract him. But i dont wan him to be based off any of the characters of original Criminal Minds. He should have a character uniquely his. No. of male/female characters too shouldnt be the same. It really needs to have its own Korean touch.

I just realise I didnt watch any of Kim Ah Joong's work. and after googling her, i just realise she's same age as LJG.

I hope this remake wont face the same fate as Entourage. Interesting KBS is doing it, its nice to have that much more variety though. I'm keeping this on my radar.

This casual viewer's fantasy casting

Gideon: Choi Min Soo
Could mix G & H into one character
Hotchner: Lee Joon Hyuk
their age difference is reversed and should be larger but I think this would be better
Morgan: Lee Jun Ki

Reid: Park Bo Gum - if he agrees to an ensemble cast, he would be the best

Kim Jae Wook - has the look. Can act but idk about the straightforwardness. Or would he pretty much be doing the same role as CP & Mary Stayed out all Night?

Lee Hyun Jae - has the look. I think he has the acting potential but that might be the glasses SUFBB provided. Everyone was aces in that drama. I haven't seen him act snice bUT the rest of the band has had ups and downs.

I'm don't know much about the girls in the original and I don't know which k-actresses I would choose.

They should make a Law & Order Korea version based on their headline news. That should be interesting stuff. I hated and loved L&O because the good guys don't always win... but then that's reality.

Kim Ah-joong was great in Wanted. The show did have some flaws but I wouldn't consider her to be one of them.

It would be nice to see LJK acting with Ha Ji Won, because she has a special gift to make her co-star shine on screen and also she likes to do her own stunts and LJK does like it too. So I think both could have been a good drama couple, that could be hilarious

As much as I love Lee Joon Gi this does not sound like a good project for him. I hope he declines. But if he signs on I know I will be watching T_T

WHAT?! Oh my god. I'm so in. CM is my all time favorite American tv show. HOWEVER I am a little worried about them redoing this in kdramaland. CM's main draw for me is the familial love that develops between the team members and I have this fear that they'll try and weave in some dramatic love story and ruin it. I think if we could bring together the writers/directors from Bad Guys and Misaeng we would really get something beautiful though!

I think audience satisfaction on adaptation or remake depends on its mindset while watching the show. For me, I belong to those viewers that would take an adaptation drama just like any originals. I would in fact detest if it would just be merely copy & paste.

So far Korean adaptations have been successful in my liking. Most of them have been better than the original.

Btw, is there any news about this drama. I actually forward to it actually. I always see LJG as an actor who always bring something new to the table. I am curious as to how is he going to interpret and portray his character this time.
