News bites: January 7, 2017

The King Loves

  • The cast of The King Loves held their first script read, and co-stars Hong Jong-hyun, Yoon-ah, and Im Shi-wan posed cutely for the camera. Each cast member began by speaking briefly of their hopes for the drama, and Jung Bo-seok drew laughs by acknowledging his physical resemblance to Im. Jung said, “After looking at Shi-wan who’s playing my son, I finally understand why I was cast. I hope we are able to create a set environment as fun as the script and a really great drama.” Lee Ki-young, who plays Yoon-ah’s dad, followed Jung’s comment with, “I get now why I was cast, too.” The show will be pre-produced and will air on MBC later this year. [Sports Chosun]

  • The King Loves

  • Wonderfully quirky Park Jin-joo (Jealousy Incarnate) has landed a role in While You Were Sleeping, the latest supernatural drama from writer Park Hye-ryun (Pinocchio, I Hear Your Voice). Suzy (Uncontrollably Fond) stars as a woman who has premonitions in dream-form and Lee Jong-seok (W–Two Worlds) headlines as a prosecutor who tries to prevent her forebodings from coming true. The pre-produced drama will air in the first half of 2017 on SBS. [Joongang]
  • The rival to Hong Gil-dong (Yoon Kyun-sang) in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People has been cast, and Kim Jung-hyun (Jealousy Incarnate) has landed the plum role. He’ll play a man named Mo-ri who was born on the same day and in the same city as Hong, but who’s been destined to a very different fate. Mo-ri is smart and dispassionate, but he’s incredibly hostile towards Hong. It’ll be Mo-ri’s wits versus Hong’s strength as the two “rivals of the century” battle it out. Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People premieres January 30 on MBC. [MBN, TV Report]

  • Park Jin-joo, Kim Jung-hyun, Kim Hee-chan

  • This drama special sounds suspiciously similar to the other special that cast Han Sun-hwa: Perhaps that project morphed into this one. Kim Hee-chan (Mrs. Cop 2, Cheese in the Trap) has been cast as the lead in a time-slip drama special called Bing-gu (meaning Idiot) opposite Han. It’s about a man from 1979 who’s able to skip over the years to meet Han’s character in 2016, and Kim Hee-chan will play a 2-in-1 character. Bing-gu will air on MBC in early 2017. [MBN]
  • It’s time to check in on the second season of Bad Guys, and while the project is still confirmed for OCN’s lineup this year, the script is still in its infancy. A film may also be in the works (they have to bring the original cast back for that, right?!) but CJ E&M would only confirm that a movie adaptation of the hit OCN drama is one of many projects they are considering. [DongA]

  • Moon Sori, Jin Ki-joo

  • The cast of Little Forest is shaping up nicely: Moon Sori (Legend of the Blue Sea) and Jin Ki-joo (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) are joining Ryu Joon-yeol and Kim Tae-ri in the manga adaptation movie. Kim was cast early as a girl who escapes the suffocating city life by returning to her rural hometown, and Ryu plays her childhood friend. Moon’s been cast as Kim’s mother, whose sudden disappearance when Kim was young has left the girl with lingering questions. Jin’s been cast as the protagonist’s longtime bestie, a cheerful girl with a healthy aura. The Korean adaptation of a Japanese manga and subsequent film will seek to explore the country’s natural beauty and diverse foods and will be directed by Im Soon-rye (The Informant). [Osen, TV Report]

  • Sungyeol, Lee Ye-hyun

  • Infinite’s Sungyeol will pair with rookie Lee Ye-hyun in a fantasy investigative drama special called Cold Case Provisional Task Force. Sungyeol’s a detective intern with a gift for his chosen profession, but he’s also the butt of peer jokes because of his severe dyslexia. He’ll overcome his disability through his intense desire and he’ll become Korea’s top detective intern. Lee is an athlete injured in an accident and forced to quit playing soccer. She’ll begin writing for a sports newspaper instead, but will be given the boot because of her inability to write. She’ll get unexpectedly involved in Sungyeol’s efforts to solve a cold case. [News1]
  • After debuting in Japan last year, Boys Before Flowers, the musical, is set to hit the stage in Korea in a couple of months. Casting for major roles is underway, and many calls have been put out to famous idols. The show will run from February 24 to May 7 at Hong Ik Art Center’s Grand Theater. And now I can’t get Almost Paaaaradiiiiiise out of my head. [Herald]

Surprisingly when I heard Almost Paradise, I didn't think it was that bad, atleast not as bad as Love is the Moment. But by being it mentioned so many times in DB, I have started to dislike it. The same goes for subway. The excessive ppl and it being mentioned in DB has made me hate subway, even when there is a huge discount on it, I choose not to eat it.

i was really excited about that project with im shi wan until yoona joined. i dont find her to be a terrible actress and she was actually fun to watch in Prime Minister and I but she just is really bland in her acting f she doesn't get a good character. she was really bland and boring in the k2 and while it can be blamed on her character as an actress she didnt rise above it. im hoping she gets a good character at least??

Some news released said that BTOB's Changsub was casted the role of Gu Jun Pyo in the Boys over Flowers musical :) He's from Yook Sung-jae's (Goblin) group by the way if you have not heard of him :) Well his vocal abilities is definitely suitable, do support BTOB!

I watched Lee Changsub in Law of the Jungle eps 234-237 and my first thought was "this guy has slight resemblance to Lee Minho" and now I read that he has casted as Gu Junpyo.

I forgot that Lee Jong Seok was cast with Suzy. Hopefully Suzy will emote in this drama, or maybe Lee Jong Seok will be enough to make me watch it while ignoring Suzy.

At least Jin Joo will be there!

I don't understand why BOF musical debuted in Japan when the drama is actually based on the Japanese original manga, "Hana Yori Dango" and the dorama adaptation starring Matsumoto Jun was hugely popular in Japan.

I remember loving Hana Yori Dango and Matsumoto Jun in it about 58358665 times more than BOF and LMH.
Hana Yori Dango translates to boys over flowers doesn't it?

We share a similar distaste to these leading ladies. While Suzy just leaves me nonplussed, Yoon-ah I actively dislike. The K2 really sealed the deal for me. I am so disappointed that these dramas, whose stories sound interesting and who cast decent male leads, went and sabotaged themselves by casting weak female leads.

However, I am always willing to check out an interesting premise regardless, I can overlook a lot if the rest of the drama is amazing. Maybe a green actor will surprise us like Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy -who knew he had it in him!

Okay, I'm about to blow that New Years resolution to stop being mean and shallow! With apologies to their fans, I'm with you guys on both actresses but YoonAh is just ugh for me. I was bug-eyed to learn last week that she is in the new Hyun Bin action film and thought omg if that girl gets to kiss HYUN BIN, there is no God.
It ain't right.

It's so disheartening to be excited about looking forward to a drama only then to read the cast and see the dreaded names, Suzy, Yoona (*insert another idol actress who cannot act).
I was really looking forward to seeing Im Shi Wan after Miseang. I've got nothing against these girls and they are probably some of the loveliest human beings out there but my heart just shrinks and withers when I see that they are headlining a drama. How many dramas/chances must they be given to better their skills at before the writers and casting crew decide enough is enough and then give a chance to another actress who can actually emote.
There is added frustration currently even more so, when we are able to watch a talented actress like Kim Go Eun in Goblin, where I leave every episode with a smile on my face due to the effortless delivery of her role. It makes me want to rewatch the drama and linger even more on the subtle moments between all the characters. The talent and skill makes me enjoy the experience even more and after a x amount of years of being a drama viewer, I demand more.

That last bit you mentioned about Hyun Bin and Yoona kissing made me K.O.

Ah well, bring on 2017! Lets hope they do better because it really brings the whole experience down otherwise.

Umbrellaman are you my spirit animal? I didn't watch K2 despite my love for a good action drama and the reviews said I was right... Same with UF... I find comfort in the fact that we need bad actresses to appreciate the good actress even more?‍♀️

Neither "actress" has shown much by the way of acting chops (still time for them to improve a la Lee Yeon-hee and Kim Tae-hee or simply find the right script/PD a la Yoon Eun-hye), but beyond that, never got the hoopla over Yoona's looks.

She's not even the most attractive in SNSD, much less among all the idols, and let's not even get to the most radiant actresses in Korea.

Suzy... meh. Hopefully Lee Jong Suk and adding IHYV/Pinocchio writer will do something or her. Let's cross our fingers for a great PD and direction. At least it worked in Pinocchio for Park Shin Hye, she did better than Heirs.

Oh God Almost Paradise, Love is the Moment are the worst OST ever, so annoying. I'm almost feeling the same about "This is Love story" in LOTBS although they're not using it that much for some episodes. Thankfully...

A little information come from my country is we make a remake of High Kick - Season 2 will take 208 eps (100% completed), they also hold a press. con to introduce (the things just 1-2 dramas in my country do that) and they also let the super big budget (approximately 45000 USD/ep). => 208 eps: 2206710 USD.
It's also the drama which highest budget in my country.

I see the love triangle has already begun for The King Loves. At least their doing the cute version before sour tensions take over in the drama.

That Le Yee Hyun kinda looks like IU in that pic.

Its not too late, things like this happen, the other actress can switch with Suzy. It happened for that messy My Sassy Girl casting ( not that I'm supporting it). From what I'm reading, she seems like the better choice.

I keep mixing up all these up coming Saeguks like The King Loves, Rebel and that Ruler Mask something.

Lastly, their making a musical of Boys Over Flowers??!! Not just a theater adaptation, but musical! MUSICAL!!!
Pray tell, what kind of music will be sung there? I mean, I still can't forget that bizarre saxophone scene in the club( or was it bar? Memory's fuzzy) or will it be ' Talk about making love, Talk about making you smile' or something. It surely can't be 'Almost Paaaaaaridiiiiiseee!!, can it? Now I'm really curious! Gosh, all this questions I'm suddenly pondering! Maybe there'll include that song Jan Di sang at Gu Jun Pyo's birthday. I've always wanted to hear that song in its entirety. I really gotta stop over thinking this. I thought Korean musicals were more of the Aaahty variety so I'm surprised. Will it be taking seriously? Like maybe its just a light hearted show coming to your town kind of thing. Will regular musical watchers go see? Okay, I'll see my self out.

omg, viki auto-rolled over into BOF last week for me (it's started doing lately that in the Roku app) and I walked in to see that scene with Kim Bum playing the sax in the club. The words cringeworthy and cringetastic get thrown around a lot on DB but that scene simply defines the terms. I shouted in pain at the screen! AUUGGHH! Flighty Gazelles, do not let yourself overthink a BOF musical, please think of your brain cells! ?

You know what's even more amazing about that sax scene? One can't put into words exactly what makes it so Cringetastic. One would start frothing in the mouth. Like WHY did that scene need to happen? What sequence of events even led to that scene?

Still there are some music that I like in the dramz like Ji Hoon's iconic song he always played on the Violin, Guitar, Piano, you name it. Luckily, not on the sax though I reckon nothing can be as bad as the one we got. There's also that song that guy( Italian? I suck, I know) in Macau sang while Geum Jan Di wept her soul out in the canoe. Wow, I remember so much!

I'm glad to see Little Forest adaptation is shaping up nicely. I hope they will be able to bring out the essence of the original without making it unnecessarily dramatic. It would be a pleasant watching experience of a movie I like with Korean flavor. Are they going to do all 4 seasons/2 movie parts though, by the way?

Anther thing to be glad for for me is Suzy and writer Park Hye-ryun's reunion. I will check out the early episodes at least. Looking forward to this one and Saimdang in the early half of 2017.

From what I've seen of her in Prime Minister & I and The K2, she is very capable of pulling off her characters well. She also recieved good reviews for her acting in The K2 so I don't get how that equates to her ruining the drama when we all know the writing was horrible. Choi Yoojin was the only well written character in that show.
