Wow! I just realized it's Friday. Uhm.. so let's see.

Drama Crack: Still Loving You aka Bitnara Eunso -- Great writing, great acting, and a new crush for me. I haven't had a new crush in Kdrama in a while and wow, Kim Dong Joon is absolutely lovable. Be still my ahjumma heart, the guy's too young for you.

Drama Fun: Chief Kim -- NamGoong Min is amazing at showing a character who is streetsmart, fun, good-hearted, a little dumb, but who catches on quickly. There's a silliness in it that I love...and no doubt we'll probably find out his father (dead or alive) is connected with TQ...coz that's how it all works. But I think I will like this rich greedy corporation story.

Drama Thrills: Voice -- A good drama. It doesn't exactly stay with me from week to week but when I'm watching it, I enjoy it.

I tried stepping back into Our Gab Soon and First Love Again. And I just couldn't. My theory is that a long family weekend drama or/and a daily drama needs to have a great balance of humor, hope, joy, sorrow. And this is the problem with OGS and FLA. They lack humor and joy. Sure, the main heroines have pluck, but they are humorless and the stories are humorless. One ends up being ground down by all the relentless angst without a moment of let-up. I'll try again with FLA because now that the heroine has recovered from her amnesia maybe she'll give us some great revenge. We shall see.

Happy weekend, all.

yay for a crush!

I really really better check out Chief Kim, but I am really really busy. I only managed Age of Youth few weeks ago and only now starting on 1% of anything. dont know whether I´ll like it though cause there is not enough plot for me. maybe it is good for a chill-out session.

KBS already aired the 2nd half (11-20), and TBH being a viewer of KBS World am a bit cheated, as they claimed they would be showing the drama on December, but what date is it today?!

Hello Beanie family,

I have been away from kdrama land for 4 months. I am on vacation and marathoning all the dramas i missed. I have a few comments on some:

1) Golbin: The PPL made on that drama is madness, but thank god it was smoothly added. Loved the drama, the fact that it was different. Loved Loved it. Gong Yoo you my star.

2) Legend of the Blue sea: okay the kiss ?ep 20? There was tongue involved. I was like huh?...i was expecting the touching of lips full stop....hmmm. Lee Min Ho i still love you, i hope Suzy doesn't kill you for that..lol

3) Weight Fairy: Is it me of has Nam Joo Hyuk lost alot of weight from Scarlet Lovers. He looks skinnier to me. Plus was it a YG production? The amount of promotion of YG artist during the drama. Loved the drama though. Light and nice.

4) Hwarang: caught up to ep 12. Loving it. It has SS feel but different.

Any suggestions of Kdrama to watch?

oh i forgot, watched romantic doctor tooo.

Have y'all heard the news? Running Man will keep running! They're not ending the show after all. After the controversial news broke, I was so bummed and disappointed, but I wasn't too sad and eventually came to terms with it because I gradually lost interest in Running Man. BUT, idk what changed them, but I watched the last couple of eps and I was actually entertained! It definitely had that old Running Man feel/vibe again. I hope they keep it up because I'd love to see my favs go on and have a blast with the RM cast!

Ha, I kept whining about Go-eun not being able to be on one of her favorite shows now since it's ending, but since it's not, I really really want them to invite her on! Since she loves great heights, let her bungee jump or jump on those inflatables and see how high she can fly! OH, or sit on those chairs that swing you back and throws you in the pool when you get the answer wrong. Lawl. Those were one of the more fun games on RM. Any water game is fun!

Jdrama rant: I just finished Izatura na Kiss, and it has reconciled me to the worst of Kdrama machismo; apparently it can all get much, much worse...

First, we have a Candy heroine who is spectacularly bad at everything, who has every character constantly calling her dumb, including her father, and especially the main lead; who has zero self-esteem (unsurprisingly), and who has no life goals other than marrying his crush and playing assistant at whatever he does.

Then, we have a male lead who is not tsundere, just an unqualified arse**le who never shows an ounce of warmth, who is emotionally manipulative, makes every moment of closeness about his own manproblems, and whose grand romantic declaration is "okay, you win". Where is Elizabeth Bennet when you need her?

Seriously, why is this a classic?

Probably cause its considered one of the most successful manga to tv adaptations to date in various countries. The japanese live actions were so successful that 3 remakes have been made so far. The Taiwanese version was also a runaway hit (the main leads worked on 3 more drama's after this one because their pairing was such a hit). Also cause the manga never actually got completed (the author died in a house fire while moving - eerily enough since the female lead's house also ends up being destroyed in the manga/show).

it's a good show (I've watched all versions of all remakes in all the various countries) - just leave your brain at the door lol

Yes, but whyyyyy has it been so successful? *throws hands in the air* :-) .

I am not a militant feminist, believe me; I can forgive a lot in the context of a drama, and I am naturally biased towards the male lead. But this was not your usual sexist undertone, where you can roll your eyes and ignore; this was in-your-face romanticisation of an abusive relationship.

/rant.

That said, sure I was hooked while it lasted; it was not a "bad" show in the sense of badly paced or produced. But I had never quite understood the concept of hate-watching until now :-) .

there was one redeeming aspect: the male lead did acknowledge that the female lead tries much harder at everything in life, though she might mostly fail, while he has never really worked hard for anything or wanted something bad enough to really care whether he is giving his absolute best or is it just his everyday average. oh, wait, maybe I am talking about the Tai version. I dunno. in some version at least I remember the lead outright telling the girl he admires her for that give-all attitude.

***SPOILERY RANT***

Yes, there was something about that, and about her making his life challenging and interesting, when he had been so bored (because he was such a geeeenius) before. But there was always a backhanded compliment in that: "I admire you for being so plucky even though you are so dumb", and "thank you for challenging me by jinxing me and sabotaging my exam".

At the end of the day, the guy was giving me absolutely nothing to work with. Being a geeeeenius is fine for oneself, but it does nothing for the other person in the relationship. The drama was glorifying a kind of dynamics where the woman exists solely to worship the man, the man does not lift a finger to make her feel valued, let alone loved, and everything becomes about him.

And then, don't get me started on the last few episodes when he becomes all smiles towards the woman he is marrying for the company. That was the only point where I thought everybody was where they belonged: he deserved a lifetime of unhappiness, and she deserved a guy who actually knew, *valued* and loved her. Too bad that at the last minute the geeeenius decided he didn't want his toy taken away...

Hello beanies. After Goblin, i thought nothing in the new ones would be interesting for me. And Goblin was the single one on my plate for its run. Now, stumbled into Saimdang. Keeping an open mind. two things stood out: the academia is a world i am familiar with but what's painted here is totally unlike any environment i know. it seems like the academia version of Misaeng's corporate world. Totally bizarre. Educated people can't be doing that?! Second: the mix up of roles at different time periods. I keep seeing the same faces in even the same time periods. Like the bff and the blocker on the street. I know it is early in the game, but it is the mixing up in faces and roles that boggles. Is there a writers' cartel such that they agree on a theme for the season. there's just too many similarities in genre being pursued at nearly the same or slightly lagged time.

Fellow kdrama fans of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo!

Help support the drama by ordering the Director's Cut now. If the production team do not receive the minimum quota, they will not produce a DVD boxset and the drama will be lost forever!

Let's keep our BokJoonHyung love thru getting our own copy of drama!

Happy New Year, beanies!

I'm so excited! I'll see Kim Ki BUm in the flesh in March! And I only became a SHINee fan last October! People wait for years to see them! The feeling is like discovering a totally awesome book series a few weeks before the next installment is due out, but so many times better. Agh! I can't wait!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Goblin. To echo a friend's comment, what is up with the preoccupation with gosams? Couldn't she have found him when she's all grown? For a large part, I preferred Wang Yeo's and Kim Sun's doomed romance to the goblin couple, but holy crap. That death scene. The reaper reading out Eun Tak's details with tears streaming from his eyes. The tea room scene. WTF?!? I'm glad it sort of ended on a hopeful note, but the death scene was too traumatic.

Hwarang. Still funny, but I'm kind of not buying the fake bro/sis romance. The king's more interesting. Also, anybody have any idea about Sun Woo's fainting spells? Were those inherited from his father, the deposed polio-stricken prince/king? I have a feeling the writers gave V more speaking lines and angst to showcase his acting talent, but he's got a looooong way to go. Ban Ryu is starting to become human, but I hope he won't end up ruined by his adoptive father. Also, I hope Su Ho wouldn't go rouge for the love of the queen.

Voice. I thought it was going to be like the Japanese voice with Eita and Ikuta Toma, but nooooo. This one is dark. I have a feeling I'll put this in the backburner for now, like I did Signal. To be savored when the right mood strikes.

Lol. I'm still watching Drinking Solo. Again. And appreciating anew how much Key infused the character with his own personality. Like him doing that impersonation bit. Haha!

My first reaction is "I hate you" :op . My second reaction is, please hold a huge big banner from me that says "EUROPE NEXT". :-) . And if you get on the autograph rounds, please remind Key that there is footage of him promising a Paris concert at Kcon last year. He doesn't want us to think he can't keep his promises, right? :-p

Here's hoping that "under duress" will lead to "when's the next one?!". But Key speaks perfect English, don't let that rob you of your fan moment ;-) . Sigh, what does a poor European fan have to do to get noticed? Anyway, be sure to tell me all about it when you return :-) .

I bought tickets earlier. Agggggh!

I have a feeling I'd be reacting with more of the same after the concert. Lol.

Have you seen the new video?!? I was not prepared. And they brought back Kibum's eye patch! #slain

Also, they gave chance to the US Shawols. Maybe Europe will be next. Will send out that wish to the universe so you'd get to meet them too. :D

0

Lucky you! I hope they are good seats, or that you can make it to the front row :-) I would be reacting the same way, sniff, sniff...

Yes, I saw it! My thoughts were "super cool, and probably super expensive" :-) . Not so sure about the dibidibidis throwback though, hahaha.

In fact, our weekend drama-watching evening yesterday turned into SHINee-appreciation evening; I have already made my convert for the concert (should the universe listen to our prayers, please, please, please), but she still has a lot of stuff to catch up on. For the moment I have managed to get her from "only if the concert is close" to "only if I can get away from work". Yayyyyy... :-)

Media this week

Korean:
ML - I am finally done!
I get the commotion it had. I'm glad I didn't watch it airing. I'm such trash for this drama. Might even watch the director's cut.
Lobster - done
My heart!
FantasiC - done
I want a Jisoo. Like, stat.
Solomon's Perjury - next ep 2
My Shy Boss - on ep 3
I like it. A lot. More than I expected to and more than the reviews made me think I would. I don't even notice time moving which is rare.

Japanese:
Good Morning Call - next ep 11

Taiwanese:
Miss in Kiss - next ep 19

Western:
Tarzan and Jane - next ep 4
Star Trek:TOS - next ep 6
The Naked Truth is one of my favorite episodes ever. Hadn't seen it in years. But it's where some quotes and even a Spock meme comes from. Might store it to watch when I'm overwhelmed or depressed.

Movies:
The Swap - done. Best DCOM since Radio Rebel.

Reading:
Kind of Confidential - comes back next week!
Fanart came out yesterday.

Music:
Three Days Grace - done. Their latest album was amazing
Josh Turner - done.
I would freak out if I ever went to a Josh Turner concert. I found my wedding song. And he has an album coming out in March! Yay!
APink - done.
I never got a chance to really check them out. I've heard songs here and there as they came out. But I really like one voice in particular, the harmonies, and melodies.
Austin Mahone - on 2nd album. I can't listen to more.
Switchfoot - on 2nd album
The album that made me fan. Even though it came out when I was tiny. I mean, it was featured in A Walk to Remember!

So many entries will be gone after today. Here's to adding more next week!

FYI: KOREAN MUSIC IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, USA - April 8 & June 29, 2017

Beanies in the New York City area might wish to check out a couple of events sponsored by the World Music Institute. I just received their spring/summer schedule, and two artists caught my eye because of their performances related to Mugyo, Korean shamanism.

BARAJI

http://www.worldmusicinstitute.org/event/7c9ef9d3e314952ead3fef576f94c0e8

Saturday, Apr 8, 2017 - 9pm

BAM Café
30 Lafayette Ave.
Brooklyn, NY
Tel: 718-623-7811

Presented in conjunction with Korean Cultural Center NY and BAM Café

Limited unreserved seating and standing room

Baraji, while preserving the folkloric forms of both Korean music and dance, is known for the exceptional improvisation and spontaneity of their performances.

In traditional Korean music, Sinawi, the word Baraji is often used to describe improvised singing in harmony. Baraji’s performances derive from a Korean shamanic tradition known as Jindo Ssitgim Gut. This rite is used to cleanse the spirit of a deceased person. Since ancient times, there is a Korean belief that when somebody dies, their body cannot enter the world of the dead because of the impurity of their spirit. The Ssitgim Gut washes away this impurity.

Born from Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrant parents, 2016 Doris Duke Artist Jen Shyu is an acclaimed vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, producer, and Fulbright scholar. She has performed her music at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and other prestigious venues around the world. For these special performances at National Sawdust, Shyu will premiere Nine (working title), a solo ritual music drama, through both narrative and abstract, integrative music-movement methodologies via the voice, Taiwanese moon lute, gayageum, piano, and electronics. Shyu will sing in languages including Indonesian, Javanese, Taiwanese, Mandarin, Tetum, Korean, and English. This mythical work is inspired by Shyu’s 12-plus years of study of traditional music from four specific countries: epic storytelling (Pansor i ) and East Coast shaman music (DongHaeAhnByeolShinGut), both from Korea; music from sub-districts Aileu and Ataúro from East Timor; Hengchun Folk Song with moon lute from Taiwan; and Ledhekan, which combines Javanese dance with improvisational singing (Sindhenan) from Indonesia.

Have not seen any follow up to this:

City of Stars

Offers are out to Jang Dong-gun and Hyeon Bin to star in the ambitious science fiction drama "City of Stars", slated to be released late next year.

"City of Stars" is still in talks with both actors, but is currently scheduled to start filming in January, for release in the second half of 2017. I'm happy to hear that the drama will be entirely pre-produced, because it would have been difficult to imagine such an ambitious show done on a live shoot schedule. The story is set in a future where Earth is running low on resources, and follows two aspiring astronauts on their way to space to find some more.

I don't think I've seen a Kdrama where the fate of the world hangs in the balance, so I think we can assume that we'll be dealing with problems on an epic scale. If "City of Stars" lives up to its ambitions, it could be a great comeback for both Hyeon Bin, who could use a hit after 2015 flop, "Hyde, Jekyll and I" and Jang Dong-gun, who hasn't been in a drama since 2012.

Writer/director/actor Jang Jin is already attached to direct what is shaping up to be the blockbuster drama of 2017, but we'll have to wait and see if either actor signs on officially.

This week I finished my 3rd Gaksital (aka drama with polarizing reviews that people either love or hate ) .

After watching Bridal Mask and Mirror of the Witch, I watched Cruel/Heartless City.

The funny thing was, during the whole drama I wondered "Why don't they have a personal Yong Pal?" and " Did Yong Pal's creator thought to create him after watching Cruel City?"...
Just goes to show what happens after watching different dramas. You start to fanfiction them together :P

PS. I can't wait to watch my 4th Gaksital, but I suppose it will find me, just like the others did :D

I got the following a few minutes ago, but back to normal now. Anybody else have problems?

Sigh. On Feb 1 their "Always Online" was showing stuff from Jan 28. Chief Kim ep 1 recap was the top story.

Ok, so I'm currently rereading the recap of The Producers (usual habit of reading recaps on your site) and I saw this in Episode 3:

"It’s an explosion of geekery, and he ends with the conclusion that if they did a matchmaking show concept, it would be popular… in 2016. After a long beat, Joon-mo only says one thing: “Did you go to Seoul University?” Seung-chan: “Yes…” Hahaha, how does Joon-mo turn Seoul U into the butt of a joke?"

I don't know about 1N2D ratings on the recent 2016, but this is the year that I FINALLY watched 1N2D, including the prior seasons hahaha

And Kim Jong Min won the Daesang right? I guess Seung-chan's cycle theory was right hahahaha
