Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 13-19, 2017

It happened—Defendant finally broke the 20% mark in style, proving that it’s the force to be reckoned with in the Monday-Tuesday slot. Bringing up second is still Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, while Hwarang remains steadily below the 10% mark. At least Introverted Boss has seen some improvement, even though it’s probably not the kind of improvement the network originally hoped for.

Not much has changed in the middle of the week since Chief Kim is so far ahead in the lead that nothing will be able to catch up to it, and Saimdang, Light’s Diary continues to fall behind. Maybe the massive suspension of disbelief required to watch Missing 9 is hurting its numbers, but at least it’s holding steady to its meager ratings fare.

As far as weekend cable ratings, Voice is still continuing to do quite well for itself, while Tomorrow With You has actually lost some of its (admittedly small) viewership. I’m curious as to why it’s not doing better than it is, but the viewing public sure can be a fickle bunch.

I went back to watching Chief Kim since ppl here have been saying how funny it has been. Yes, I must admit that I'm one of those fickered minded audience. I love it when Chief Kim has his own funny antics while the villains seemed to have nothing to turn the tables on him. Haha.

Yes! I was one of those people too. I remember that the pilot episode had below 10% in ratings. Plus, besides nam goong min I wasn't really familiar with others. And now the ratings are steadily increasing! Definitely the result of word of mouth

Writing is really tight thus far which makes it interesting. It does suffer from a bit of slow pacing but the romance is actually realistic and really sweet. I think it definitely has potential to be a minor cult hit

It makes me really sad to see tomorrow with you ratings. Its the only currently airing drama I am watching right now and I really like it. I don't understand what its doing wrong. Maybe its not the type of romance korean audience likes. :(

Is it true that the script will be re-write? I read somewhere but not sure if it is true. I think I got why Knetz cannot seem to enjoy it. TBH I enjoyed it earlier but after epi 3&4 i started to feel a little bit boring. Based on my little observation, time traveling drama will get good rating if it is plot driven, such as Signal and W. This drama focusing more on the romance, and characters driven I believe, so it might not appeal to some. Maybe, I might be wrong. Thus genre probably works better on movie instead.

And.. another thing I do realized, so little promotion and buzz. I followed Soompi, and some other kdrama accounts in FB, very very little talked about this drama.Totally contradict with Goblin and even some other drama before.

I sincerely hope they don't redo anything, Sera. And just let the drama run its course otherwise we might end up with a confusing storyline.

I know the drama isn't big on the laughs or on the romance but I feel like its a subtle way of storytelling. There is also mystery and intrigue because of the time travelling aspect. There are some quiet moments between them which just feels realistic to me.

I agree on the low promotion and buzz. I just hope the ratings doesn't drop more.

Hopefully not redo on anything or even they want to do it, just dont have to announce it publicly.

I will definitely rewatch from epi 1 until latest episodes. I usually like this kind of drama, but sometimes i need the right time for it so I will be able to emotionally invested.

Yes at least stay for 2%. Hopefully no more drop.

I guess Tomorrow With You is my kind of love story. I think it's very romantic; so not sure why others don't. This romance is a slow burning one on his end, but it's definetly there. Learning to cherish each other in the small moments of each day - that stuff makes my heart flutter (which I don't find boring to watch at all.)
I liked Goblin, but not for the romance. The bromance was super cute and it could be hilarious at times. However, the romance in Goblin barely made sense to me and was strongly aided by slow mo, multi-angle shots and dramatic music.

Maybe there is a place for it in the online/ international community. It's quite a bit more popular on Dramafever than other shows airing right now... So maybe that's something ...anything ...(grasps staw)

Me too. It's totally my kind of drama. It's the one show I've been eagerly waiting to watch these days. I'm so sad that it's not doing well in the ratings.

Tomorrow With You is like dark chocolate. Not sugary and sweet like milk chocolate. Not everyone likes dark chocolate or chocolate in general. To some it can be bitter, tastes heavy on the tongue. TWY is like that and it's ok. As long as it stays true to the story and characters to those who enjoy it to the end.

0

I've been watching it, and for me it's too slow with lack of thrill elements. It had the right balance in the opening episode though :(

It's supposed to be slow and boring. This drama deals with marriage. Marriage is about the boring and mundane things. It's about the day to day activities of cooking for your spouse, the peeling of an apple, and reading of lousy book. It's about brushing of your teeth, and doing grocery shopping. But at times, it also shows how they can be fun and lead to intimacy.

This is not your fairy tale drama, where a knight in shining armor will sweep you off your feet and live happily ever after. Rather, this drama is about the consequences of being swept off hastily into a fairy tale.

Viewers will have a difficult time with Tomorrow With You, as it deals with real life. Real life is not fun. And viewers want to be entertained. And for many, this is not entertaining.

Books, dramas, and movies that tackle marriage life is always depressing and boring. But I think TWY is excellent at making it boring, fun, and sexy at the same time.

I'm thankful for Shin Mina and Lee Je-hoon for taking on this drama. Shin Mi-na, specially, as she is known for rom coms. This is excellent for her. I'm grateful for the PD and writer for going above and beyond the norm. The color. The cinematography. The long takes. I. Love. It. All!!! And thank you tvN for accepting to release this drama.

I totally agree with you! I'm really enjoying Tomorrow With You eventhough every episode leaves a lot of questions for me, that just makes me more curious and excited about the drama. And I'm loving Lee Je Hoon's acting, he seems so driven and I love his little facial expressions. I hope this show gets better with ratings.

I'll make an attempt at explaining what many may be feeling.

It's a weird show. The premise is that a guy stalks a woman to find out why she dies with him in the future. As though answering that question is supposed to explain why he got In a car accident? The we find out he married her. So now we know why they we're together. But there's still supposed to be a mystery? Then they shift into multiple life saving coincidences. As though that's supposed to result in anything other than 'why am I supposed to find this interesting?'

The show seems way too full of itself. Honestly I think they're borrowing too heavily from the good will (and positive expectation for a 'smart' drama) that Signal attached to the lead's name.

She's supposed to be a photographer but is bouncing up and down trying to strike a pose at the same time she's clicking the shutter. Hardly believable.

Then add to this the fact that the set design(s) have zero continuity. The color palette is disjointed. The sets/locations are way too 'busy'. The wardrobe is unattractive. Overall I find the visuals on the ugly side.

And the characters seem like jerks. But then we're shown all their problems which I suppose was intended to make us overlook their shortcomings. Uh no. Just because life is hard doesn't mean you get a free pass on being irresponsible, self-centered and rude.

So what's to like? (Rhetorical question.)

Again, this is just an alternate viewpoint, to answer the question on why some/many people don't like the show. Not intended to start a debate on the show's merits. It's obvious that it suits some peoples' tastes and they consider it quite good.

Required fields are marked *

I agree with all your points. The writing is lazy, time traveling plot overused, boring in this case, and directing sucks. Shin Mina's wardrobe is awful, like the borrowed it from She Was Pretty set. Also, showing two people working on marriage that (we know already) supposed to end in the next 2 years, by one accident or another, is pointless. I feel bad for the two leads, they are good actors.

Seeing how high Defendant's rating - i cannot wait to start this drama soon. Is it 16 or 20 epi, anyone?

Chief Kim - my addiction for now. I need Chief Kim as my work colleague and Gaeun as my hoobae. lol.

Rebel - i need to rewatch epi 5&6 to be ready for the coming episodes. Tomorrow is Monday, means new episode.

Introverted Boss - Fun show to watch. The rating is slightly better, maybe have a chance to get higher. Crossing my fingers the show can get 3% at the very least.

Father I'll Take Of You - this show is entertaining. I think it can get 15% sooner on Sunday's slot. I especially cannot wait to see tonight's epi tomorrow. Seems like the show is getting more interesting - Seong Joon has started digging into his past. Dong Hui still clueless on her past but looks like in few more episodes she probably will start getting the hints. Hating the second son Seong Sik the most. lol.

Still behind of Saimdang and Tomorrow With You. I guess i need to start rewatch TWY from epi 1 because seems like I started to lost interest (But it is Lee Je Hoon. I dont want to mis him. sigh). Hopefully I will be able to find my interest back.

I'm really liking TWY, I hope you try it again. The tone is odd in a good way, the romance is off-kilter, the mysteries seem to become more layered over time, and the leads are wonderful. There are weaknesses, of course: I'd like to see more from the other characters and the presumed villain, and it does move slowly (though not as glacial as Goblin was for me). I can totally understand why it's not a blockbuster, but I don't understand why the ratings are sooo low.

Stay strong Missing 9! It's the drama I enjoy the most right now. Also glad Introverted Boss ratings improved.

Do more people watch dramas on Monday & Tuesdays? Like the total viewership of Monday & Tuesday for the Big 3 stations is higher than Wednesday & Thursday. So is it easier to get ratings on Monday Tuesday dramas? Could it be that people are people more tired in the middle of the week compared to the beginning of the week?

So if LOTBS had a Mon Tues timeslot and Romantic Doctor Wed Thur the ratings would've swapped? Both were high rated and well received dramas in S.Korea.

I don't know why people surprised over TWY ratings. It lacks "excitement" feel in it. Couple of dramas hated or criticized by viewers here also had the same problem. Calm or realistic approach don't work. Slow build, a lot of angst, low-key invisible comedy and extremely questionable, flawed characters, also turns down audience as it was proven.

perhaps the lack of uncertainty in the romance?
like they already get happiness but hardly relatable cause it happen so fast and the audience can't feel the weight of the relationship

0

Required fields are marked *

If that's Tomorrow With You's approach, then I'm even more tempted to watch. Its quite rare for kdramas to take the mellow, slow burn approach esp with the OTP, side characters, sometimes but not the OTP, last one I saw was I remember You and Ms. Temper ( for this one I'm not even sure they'll be romance and I'm at ep 8 lol). I pray they don't cave to pressure and tell the story they want to tell.

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree with you about TWY being low-key, realistic and having flawed characters. Not necessarily a bad thing bcs we all have different taste (I love it, though) but it doesn't exactly fit k-viewer's taste maybe, hence the rating. Or they probably catch it online?

No matter, I truly wish cast & crew will still know that many enjoy the show despite the stinking rating. They produce a very good show and makes many of us extremely happy watching it, that's the most important thing I guess.

I always believe they watch it online since tv is not the only source nowadays. Sometimes during the airtime, maybe there is another thing to do or some people still at works. Since the drama always uploaded online around 2-3 hours after korean air time, so there will be no problem to watch it anytime and anywhere.

The one reason I appreciate Netflix getting into the K-Drama game is that they are most likely going after an international market, not just a predominantly Korean or asian market. Hopefully they would be more willing to take risks and not just add raisins to the bread but use a totally different base to make the bread.

It really is becoming disheartening to come on this post to see my favourite drama not do so well. Like you, I too wish that the cast and crew knew that there are people who love this show just as it is. Heck, there were people who loved Introverted Boss--although I didn't--before the changes, and now after the changes its not like it's magically a hit bringing in tons of additional people. I think it's far to late for changes. Leave it as is, please.

Happi Mari also make me feel weird since the 1st ep, I think it lacks the charm while in totsuzen, it starts good.

Haven't watch quartet and many more cause I am waiting for the full translation but rakuen is just hella dangerous,
it shows something that I don't think they would show and the overall tone of the show is more depressing,
it's like voice but no one survived.
It's about danger in everyday lives because the bad guy just want to live in his own sanity and he is not in any police watch list.

So many people unaware of danger outside them and so many regrets.

Not impressed with A Life at all. Story seems to have been borrowed from a B-grade Korean melodrama, and on top of that the Korean geeeeenius doctor trope has been exported to Japan. Kimura and Yuko Takeuchi seem to be phoning it in, which is too bad because I love Takeuchi in all of her shows before she got married.

Okay, this is what I noticed: High profile Pre produced dramas like Saimdang, UF and Hwarang didn't live up to its expectations. Only DOTS, Goblin and Blue Sea had a successful run among highly anticipated dramas. W, Jealousy Incarnate and Rebel despite having starred by a top star had a so-so ratings. Dramas like Romantic Doctor, Defendant and Chief Kim are well received because of their writing and actors portrayal.

Rebel has more episodes to go (30 episodes in total) and I believe this show can reach 15% or maybe higher especially once Defendant finished. The main casts in this drama also not top star, and this is first leading roles for both Yoon Kyun Sang and Chae Soo Bin (and both of them are not that experienced in sageuk). This drama is doing well mostly because of the good storyline, and the great performance by all casts.

I've read comments on the pilot ep of Tomorrow With You, and it's initial impression on Korean viewers is that it's quiet, the same quietness you see from Jdramas (that's what they wrote). It's also evident with the filter they're using. It's somber. If you watched Weightlifting Fairy or Goblin, you'd understand what I mean. The color palettes in those dramas are bright and happy.

While it's not exactly the reason why it's not faring well with its ratings, it could be one of the factors. I think with Romance, Koreans generally like grandeur, over-the-top swoony dramas that are Goblin or DOTS. With time travelling, they prefer it to be plot-driven. I like TMY as it is. It's not too fast that my head hurts from all the things being thrown at me, and it's not too slow that I'm dying to skip some parts.

Yeah, I actually didn't like the color palette of TWY at first but it has grown on me. The cinematography is very cinematic (in a different way from Goblin).

I've been keeping up with it week by week but this isn't the type of show I'd be inclined to binge watch. It's a pleasant watch and I'm curious to see where it goes but it hasn't grabbed me like some others do. I don't think I could sit down and watch more than one or two episodes at a time.

Me too. I like it, but it's the type of show that I'd watch a few days after it's subbed. I don't keep up with it they way I've followed Weightlifting Fairy, Goblin or DOTS--that I would die to see the next episode even without understanding any of it. But I think of it as a good thing. I have a tendency to drop dramas that don't catch my attention or dramas that have serious flaws I can't ignore (Hwarang, LOtBS). I'm also curious how it'll do for the next few weeks. I just hope the decline in ratings doesn't affect its quality. I know that it's pre-produced, but what do we know. CITT was also pre-produced but look at how it went.

The problem with how they're doing many of the 'pre-produced' dramas is that all that term means is pre filmed. Like, filmed with lots and lots of extra scenes; to give PDs many options on which direction to take the final product. The writer still isn't in control, or able to tell a tight, cohesive story from start to finish. I think that superstar writers are the only ones getting nearly complete control now. And their pre produced dramas are a cut above the rest.

See, maybe because I've been watching a lot of Japanese shows before Korean, I'm totally fine with TWY's pacing. I don't get people saying it's too boring or slow-paced because I think it's perfect as it is. Maybe in Japan, this will get higher ratings?

I'm also enjoying the show very much and don't find it slow or boring at all. I anticipate every episode and have so many questions and theories on everything, and if So Joon's present actions are really effecting the future or if he's caught in some loop destined to be and will be no matter what he does type like situation.

i like the premise of TWY, the color pallate and the questionable relationship of the OTP. But it doesn't give off an edge for viewers to clamor for the next episode. Is it because they are still building on the discovery of the secret?

Anyway I will still follow the drama just because…

But what is really keeping me on my toes are Voice, Defendant and Chief Kim — there is something that's always brewing, an explanation on top of a revelation — things like that.

" it’s quiet, the same quietness you see from Jdramas (that’s what they wrote). It’s also evident with the filter they’re using. It’s somber."

There's nothing wrong with this but honestly I don't think that many people anywhere would want to watch a low key, somber show on a friday night.

Also, I'm not talking about those of us overseas who can watch this whenever or have many other choices on the same night but people who live locally and are flipping through TV channels looking for something to watch. I wonder if this would fare a bit better if it aired during the week but this is all just theorizing.

I kind of wish kkuljaem was still updating on netizen kdrama comments because they are a good way to figure out why local ratings for a drama aren't so hot.

Netziendrama blog translates netizens reactions to various dramas including TWY. The comments are always positive with (1,000+) up votes on enjoying the cinematography, the story, and the mystery (who is ahjussi). Even netizens are commenting on not understand why the show has low ratings and wishing/hoping for it to rise. Then it means people are watching but they aren't watching it live. Maybe it's something viewers are catching up on during the week or just watching online instead of viewing it live. It seems to have a pleased niche audience locally so I hope TVN does not mess with it.

Thanks for linking the blog though, I've been looking for one like it!

I've said it before and i'll say it again. If only Missing 9 were on cable, I think it would do a lot better. Lots of unrealistic parts but it's still got that thrill that keeps you wanting to see more. And the acting is amazing!

I really REALLY hope Defendant will reach 30%. The episodes just keeps getting better and better, and we're reaching the climax of most 16 ep dramas which is episode 9 and 10.

I gave up on Missing 9. It struck me as totally unrealistic from the very first episode (deserted island beach with thousands of footprints in the sand??). I managed to make to ep4 and gave up. Never figured out why so many were trying to cover it up, but lost interest in why.

It's really sad that Tomorrow With You gets really low ratings. I'm enjoying it the same way I enjoyed Goblin. I am actually more invested in So-joon and Ma-rin than I was with Kim Shin and Eun-tak. I don't like melodramas too but this is the kind of sadness I'm willing to take on. just hope that tvN does not do anything unnecessary because of the low ratings.

Their attempt to change Introverted Boss did give them a bit of increase in ratings but the character inconsistencies became a bit apparent. Ro-woon became more likeable than she was but Hwan-ki turned out to be very less of an introvert. It's a 20-episode drama and I think we could have reached this stability with just letting it run its original flow.

I just enjoy the dramas I enjoy but with all this concern in ratings, I can't help but get affected. I love tvN because it doesn't expect ratings as high as public networks but with how things are going lately, I'm worried that a lot of compromise with the drama content in consideration of good ratings will continue on.

Huhu. Same here. I watched Goblin and then followed TWY. I am actually enjoying it and more curious about the story. I hope they get higher ratings! Korean viewers are just hard to predict. They definitely come and go as they like.

Innocent is a star - Among all male actors(They deserve to be called actors?) - This guy is the best. Woo Bin did good in some parts of UF. Rest of them were just your avg. players.

I think the little info audience get each episodes keeps them hooked. With a happy news of daughter being alive more audience joined the wagan. Still, I think it drags its story as well as having a few too cliche soap operas.

Tomorrow with Shy Boss - I do agree with the ratings. Cinderella deserved this treatment too.

Chief Kim - How many Office dramas we had since 2016? How many of violent, stress inducing, suspense dramas are airing right now? I think these 2 are the main reason for Chief Kim's success. Also that old school comedy. Timing of the show has helped it a lot.

Missing 9 - This show deserves more but won't get past 5%

Father I'll Take Care of You - is rising a bit too slowly.

I'll never understand why TWY is tanking. Acting (da chemistry), writing (realistic examination of a marriage and how we bring lives together), the directing the (cinematography is gorgeou. Especially loved the side by side waiting), why is it not being watched!?! I see nothing but positive remarks with plenty of up votes of Naver and Duam, I just don't get it.

I guess it's slower cooker, calming, warm vegetable soup on a cold snowy day feeling isn't for e erroneous. It's not colorful and flashy like typical rom-com (with uldnt even call it that) and I guess k-audience just can't settle into that. So long as they don't try to re-edit and such (which I doubt they'll do since it's low rated but well liked) and the cast and crew aren't too down about it, it's fine. It's simply wasn't meant to be a hit I guess.

I told my friends that if TWY is music genre, then it would be blues. Not everyone's cup of tea yet for its fans, it has a special place in their hearts. The fans pf this genre isnt as many as pop or rock or even hip hop yet, those few people dedicated their love for it.

The rhythm, plot, and angst are just not korean drama viewers' type. Usually i only watched drama with high rating. And i like most of the high rating dramas, but some low rating dramas such as weightifting fairy and twy also got my interest. But i could understand the sentiment for this two dramas.
But of course, i dislike some other high rating dramas, hmm... Blue sea for example. I think, if we compare goblin and blue sea, goblin is more popular.

While my other fave dramas go to voice, chief lim, rebel and defendant which are getting high rating.

But whatsoever happen, LEE JE HOON IS LOVE. I just hope shin minah will take another role, baddest character. Not this kind of character anymore. C'mon girl, yoi can do it.

I totally agree. I love Ma-rin! Exactly as you said, I like that she speaks her mind.

She reminds me somewhat of Oh Hae-young but not quite as abrasive and doesn't cry as much. I guess she's more like how OHY was at the beginning of OHYA (towards the end I think she got more... unhinged... lol).

But even though I say that, she is still very different from Hae-young. :) She has a lot of growth to do so I hope the writer does her justice...

I like how you liken TWY to blues. Completely agree. I don't usually listen to blues music, but if one is particularly pleasing to my ears, I'll listen to it. TWY's overall tone is very subtle and it seems like it doesn't click with Korean viewers.
It is a shame because the directing is outstanding and wish more Koreans could see it.

Yes I wholeheartedly agree with you. Because the lead actor need to carry the drama or the story until the end. If he fail to do that, what else to watch about the drama then? Maybe yes for the lead actress, but somehow the drama feel more shallow if there is no spark/chemistry between the leads. I somehow wish SSH could give us his viewers more, since he has been in the acting profesion for how long already. But I hope this time it will be different, so I will lurk around first, if the response are good then I will proceed to watch it. ?

Saimdang.. First 6 episodes were nothing fresh.. it's quite slow because they had to spread out content for 30 episodes. It finally just got interesting with episode 8, which will be equivalent to around ep 4-5 of of normal 16-ep length show?

I binged watched Defendant and boy, I can see why the ratings are on fire!

The premise isn't groundbreaking but I am enjoying how things are slowly being revealed. Mostly, I am just a sucker for parent-child melodramas. I remembered being totally hooked in the good first half of God's Gift. Lee Bo Young was very good.

Funny that I was never quite enamored by Ji Sung before. I've watched him in Secret Love, wasn't impressed much. Heard about him being awesome in KMHM but never checked it out. I guess Defendant is the show which I finally discover JS. Maybe fatherhood helped him in this role? His agony, desperation and grief are all so real.

I am not started Defedant yet, but glad you finally impressed with Ji Sung. I loved him in Secret, although the reason I love the drama mostly because it is so my cup of coffee, but totally loved him in Kill Me Heal Me. KMHM is romcom but since it dealt with multiple personality disorder, a lot of emotions involved and Ji Sung was truly awesome on that. Like Hwang Jung Eum, i maybe prefer these two in melodrama more than any other genre. Their emotions are so real.

No love for tomorrow with you with the ratings :(
It's a shame and I can't resonate well with the local viewers
It's a great show, with a nice concept and good Chem between the leads.
I think the way the show presents it's time travel is confusing for some people but I like it this way. I hope the crew don't get disappointed - in this case ratings completely doesn't equal quality!

Wow TWY had even lower ratings thn IB. IB took time off to regroup but i don't suppose TWY can do that? Is it preproduced? Odd that remarks n feedback is considered neutral to good right. Admittedly i havent watcg both yet. Im in the group waiting to see to dive in or not.
I probably wont start any kdrama until Strong Woman premiers. For now its clip watching for bits n pieces of Take care of you father, Chief Kim n Missing 9. Defendant cant watch whilr its airing.. For ots genre the wait for ep to ep would kill me.

Missing 9's plot is moving so fast that most of them have returned to Seoul by episode 10. No more ppl missing except for Yeol I think. I wonder what else in store for the rest of the 6 episodes other than fighting to reveal the truth that was covered up by the villains. Maybe can we have more adorable bunny hunting scenes by Ki Joon? Oops I forgot they were now in Seoul !

Voice is kinda average for me now. The tension went down a bit for the recent episodes (imho). I don't yearn to watch it so much as the excitment and thrill has kinda gone off quite a lot though they are still hunting for the real killer. Maybe becos now it just threw us a big hint on who the real killer it might be ??

Chief Kim is the one that I went back to watching it after I dropped it early. It is really hilarious with his funny antics especially at the 'waiting hall'...I must agree that it is a good stress reliever.
