Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5, 2017

There was no Introverted Boss this week, since the show took the time to hopefully regroup after a rough start in the ratings game. I suppose we should count it as a good thing that the network listened to its viewers, but on the other hand, there’s way more instances where that kind of last-minute scrambling has gone wrong than where it’s gone right. But there’s a first time for everything, and with tvN being the well-oiled machine that it is, it’ll be interesting to tune in next week to see what changes.

The newest premiere, sageuk Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, improved upon the numbers left by its predecessor, Night Light, and managed to get into the double digits with only its second episode. Murder mystery crime thriller Defendant will be the show to beat, though—and it won’t be easy, with it nearing 20% in only its second week.

Things have gotten a whole lot more interesting over in the Wednesday-Thursday time slot, since the hyped-to-high-heaven comeback project for Lee Young-ae not only dropped in numbers with each of this week’s episodes, but was actually surpassed in ratings by offbeat comedy Chief Kim. I’m really enjoying the weirdness of the latter, but am surprised to see it doing so well against a show everyone thought would dominate. Poor Missing 9 is at least remaining steady, though nabbing below 5% is nothing to write home about these days.

But on the weekend, new tvN drama Tomorrow With You aired to a pretty decent 3.9%, though that dropped just a hair for its second episode. Despite the week off, Voice seems to be back and stronger than ever, while the week off hurt Our Gap-soon—the reason it always sees a rise in its second episode is because it always airs a double-header, so there’s less competition by the time the second one airs. But hey, whatever works.

Chief Kim hurrah! It's so crazy it's good. When you find yourself replaying lots of scenes, you know you've got a keeper.

Voice - those walkies, giving me Signal feels. Watching this show as it airs, is giving me anxiety issues. I wait with bated breath for ep 6 tonight! Side note: i love how the drama that follows after Voice, Tunnel, looks super good as well. 2017 is looking good kdramaland!

I've not had the chance to start on Tomorrow with You since Viu didnt pick it up. Any comments beanies?

Tomorrow with you is good.
▪The cinematography is aesthetic.
▪Plot is a perfect mix of emotion/mystery/romance(intensity noticeable more in ep 2)
▪The dialogues are sassy and zippy.
▪Just when you think the screenplay is slowing down it hits the mark the next instance.
▪Editing could have been a little better because at times you get confused of the timeline but not so much like you need to have full concentration mode on.
▪It's my first time watching these actors who play the lead and they are spectacular. Storyline of supporting characters is yet to grab viewers' attention.

P.S: If you like Oh hae young again then this drama is for you(because some areas give similar vibes)

All the ratings mention above are similar to the one provided by Naver, so I provide the rating from Naver as well. They are 3.6% and 4.6% for the 1st and 2nd part respectively. If I’m not mistaken, both parts were slotted at plus minus 6 p.m., perhaps not many viewers tune in during that time?

Congratulation to Rebel. Hope it will maintain the upward trend of its rating. 화이팅 !

I watched Tomorrow With You both episodes and really liked it. The first episode pulled me right in, and the second was even more intriguing. It's my favorite of all the new ones. Kind of like W in how lively it is, how much is going in, and how curious I am.

A drop from Friday to Saturday ratings is normal. And Goblin is such an outlier... that's like being surprised that a DOTS rerun pulled in more ratings than another show. All in all, tvN would consider it a success premiere week.

Tomorrow With You looks great. The plot is intriguing, the leads have chemistry, and it's funny. It has melo tone to it but given the premise, I'm fine with it. I love the overall vibe of the show and how it's already making create theories so I'm excited on what direction it will take.

Daebak!!! That's quite high for a special episode. It's even beat a new show rating.

I have to admit that Goblin special episodes are quite interesting, especially the last one. This is my first time ever being able to finish watching a special episode of a drama. Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook are so fun to watch, their chemistry is no joke. I hope I'll be able to see them working in the same project together again in the future.

The format of the Goblin specials is rather refreshing. I like how they showed tons of new and interesting things rather than a re-hash of the episodes like the first Goblin special episode. And LDW and YIN as narrators/Radio DJs is a nice touch to it. Now it truly feels like the show is over.

Gong Yoo and Lee Dongwook are such riots! They need to work together again.

I hope Rebel does well - it feels like MBC actually took a risk there, and I want to see it pay off, not least for the sake of the future prospects of Yoon Kyun-sang and Chae Soo-bin.

(couldn't help but notice they had no ep 3 preview, though - are they in live shoot mode this early?!)

I'm disappointed that Saimdang is boring. I like Lee Young Ae and Song Seung Heon. Watched Ep 4 of Chief Kim and it's better than Saimdang. Missing 9 is also tolerable for a light watch but it's not like I have the feeling to watch every episode urgently.
Hwarang is doing good outside of Korea.
But I personally like Laurel Tree Tailors (Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailorshop) because there are a lot of couples in the family drama. Next is Defendant that balances thriller, drama and slice of life.

See, I couldn't get into the past stuff AT ALL, so that leaves me watching about 20 minutes of each episode. I wish there was more back and forth (and connection) between periods. And reason for a couple of random doppelgangers. LOTBS made a lot better uses of both of those.

Anyways, yeah, it's not tree best imo. I still loke the present stuff enough to watch that though.

wow Voice and Chief Kim and poor Missing 9.

Rebel was meh and Defendant is also too much of a daily soap and both generated good ratings. Still its 2nd week was better than 1st.

Father I'll Take Care of You has become much more interesting but when it gonna surpass 15% mark?

Saimdang had a budget bigger than DOTS and LOTBS because it has more episodes. It's a drama comeback of LYA after 14 yrs and I really wanted it to do very well. JJH had a grand comeback in dramaland thanks to the raging success of MLFTS. Only DOTS, LOTBS and Doctors had a legit success among the overhyped and high dramas like UF, ML, Hwarang, Lucky Romance and Entertainer. Even W and Jealousy Incarnate had low teens ratings and had a single digit numbers during its first few episodes. Its not too late for Saimdang and ratings next week will determine if this drama will be able to regain its viewers or will continue its downward trajectory.

The budget Saimdang not so huge like you guys thought: Here is some comparsion:
- KBS UF (20 ep): 1 billion
- SBS Moon Lovers (20 eps): 100 billion
- SBS Saimdang (30 eps): 2 billion
- SBS Six Flying Dragons (50 eps): 5 billion
- tvN Signal (16 eps): ~2 billion

Yikes @ Moon Lovers...

I'm guessing the international success it had made up some costs, but still...

Is filming in historical locations and costumes really that expensive!? Why would they need so much more than Saimdang? It's not like they were filming green screen or had a bunch of CGI.

15 or 10 billion still seems like way too much.

0

15 billion for that kind of work?? Yikes! I just hope somebody is getting their money back..
Now I wonder how much Goblin cost?
I watch the special & according to LDW, just the sinking ship scene alone cost about the same as producing an entire episode of a drama. Plus the CGI & the Goryeo scenes???
Where did they get all the money?

0

Moon Lovers didnt look like they splurged with the budget. The costumes, cinematography and the sets were not spectacular. I was so disappointed with the rain ritual and the ascension of Wang So as the king. And there were no battle scenes. I kept thinking of Empress Ki the whole time I was watching the drama and I thought the drama scrimped on production. Did they use all the money to pay the cast? Moon Lovers will always have a special place in my heart simply because Wang So will forever be one of my favourite KDrama characters but sad to say the drama was a disappointment.

0

lmao! these numbers don't look legit. If saimdang budget is only 2 billion, it wont be able to cover LYA fee alone which should be no less than 100 million won prepisode...and moon-lovers 100 million?? where did you get these stat? ...10 million is more likely.

Keep rising, Rebel. Although not started it yet, but MBC deserves some good rating drama as well. Rebel, Defendant and Voice shows that I am going to start a bit later.

Blow Breeze is getting good numbers. I managed to watch some of the recent episodes but nothing spectacular. It has the formula to make it adddictive with all the makjangness, but heyy for the last few episodes, just make the good ones win, ok?

Our Gabsoon - SBS should just air 4 episodes each week, not because it is a good watch but i want it to finish earlier than April, so Kim So Eun can take a rest and look for another project, hopefully the better one. It is definitely not a good move by SBS to extend it by 10 episodes, imo.

I still have a lot to catch up on -latest episodes of Saimdang, Chief Kim. Already saw first epi of Tomorrow, looks promising.
Anyway, hope Introverted Boss gets better next week. I really hope this drama gets good rating, at least on Cinderella & 4K's level, not Entourage's level.

Hmmm...I didn't quite like Voice ep 5. I was really looking forward to it especially when it got pre-empted last week.

The thrills and nerve wrecking moments in the previous 2 cases were much better. I think I groaned out loud several times in this episode. First, why did Jin Hyuk shoot at the rear lights of the criminal's pickup? Or was he aiming at the driver? Can't he just aim for the tyres? I know that the story needs Eun Byul's case to get Eun Soo into Golden Time but I didn't care about their sappy talk. The melodrama about their family's past and Eun Soo's supposed negligence of her family seemed forced. And every time Kwon Joo asked Eun Byul how's she doing, I was shouting "Get moving already!" Kind of expect the psychopathic bf to come up behind them(which he did in the storage room) or the building to blow up before they could get out.

I am a little piqued at Hwang Kyung Il's knowledge of or involvement in Kettlebell Killer's case. But I sure hope the upcoming cases can be as good as the first two otherwise I might lose patience and drop. Maybe just watch or read recaps to find out about the main case. Meanwhile, can Chief Jang grow a brain instead of his shaggy moustache?

Yeah, I honestly can't see "regrouping" Introverted Boss is going to generate more viewers. I was one of the few on the forum to like it as it is, but I can see some of the middling viewers just dropping it since it went on hiaitus. Or viewers like me who might wait till it's finished to watch the whole thing because this reactionary "regrouping" might mean a cancellation of episodes down the line if the regroup doesn't work.

Maybe I just not into their plot of embezzling funds n doing fake accounting work etc. But NGM and the main villain (the finance director) are good in portraying their roles. Lead gal so far okay as the gal standing up for injustice. I think it is rare that we got a not-so-good-guy as the lead guy as we need to question his morals and his integrity of taking money from the company whenever he like.

-I think I understand why hwarang rating decreased. I love hwarang and still excited to follow the drama but after episode 12, it started to frustate me. The plot is dragging too much on unnecessary romance conflict, while i expect more revelations in the last 8 episodes.

I finished watching Part 1 and 2 of Goblin special episodes! I must say this is a special episode done right. It's not re-hash of scenes we've seen before. They really showed what went into making the drama. Tons of fun BTS and NGs of the cast. The cast members have such great chemistry on and off screen, especially Dongwook and Gong Yoo.

I'm impressed with the level of work the crew did. I thought the sword on Gong Yoo's chest was CGI. It turned out to be real sword that's drilled and screwed on a cast he wore. And that car that Kim Shin split into it was actually a real car that they really split into two. They also built a huge ship which is the same cost as producing one episode. Damn. All the hardwork (and tons of PPL) truly paid off.

Now it feels that Goblin is truly over. It was an entertaining watch. I will miss all the cast members. I look forward to their next projects (especially the elusive Gong Yoo lol).

Tomorrow With Yoh set the bait with episode one and by 10 minutes into episode 2 I was hooked by the end I'm crazed over it. It's so good. And since I've read 'The Time Traveler's Wife' and watched many a movies, tv shows and read many a books involving time travel, and I'm not confused on what's going down and where we are. I mean without all that foreknowledge the show lets you know and answers and reveals in their time.

I enjoy the chemistry between the leads and the unfolding love story. I enjoy the depth of the leads (bothare so much more than they seem) and feel that SMH and my bb LJH are nailing their roles. Though we need more on the side characters, it has only been 2 episodes and you see we'll eventually get into them because all this time traveling does effect their lives too.

If these days 3.9 are considered decent for a cable drama (I remember the days when hitting 1% was a hit) what do the numbers need to be for it be considered a success or hit? There is no way it's pulling in the Goblin big numbers so I wish that comparisons would stop. Gong Yoo is IT right now with the success of Train to Busan (and that one movie I can't remember) also the writer has DOTS, they were going to bring in viewers. SMH and LJH aren't at that level so it's a bit unfair to compare.

What numbers does Tomorrow With You need to bring in? It's so good (please stay good) that I want it to be considered a success for all involved.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think they expect to pull in the same numbers but i remember reading that tvn almost wrote off K2 as 'not good' with its 5% ratings because they spent a ton on production. not on any other cable but with tvn, they would need to rise to about 8-9% to be considered good.

0

Required fields are marked *

I actually thk 3% is consider average, 5% is consider good. 8% is vy good. And double digits (10%) is success.

But this doesnt apply to highly anticipated dramas. K2 had a big budget, Overseas shooting and at the time Ji Chang Wook was the highest paid actor by the cable channel.
Similar with Goblin, star studded cast! Writer, direcyor and overseas shooting. If it pulled in a maximum of 10% it wouldnt hav been considered successful because its expected to set records, beat tvn's predecessor in high ratings.

Im not saying Tomoro with you's cast isnt good. Both leads have good record and well known but i dont thk the drama has evrr been billed to beat records. Thrir cast is like Oh Hae Young, but oh hae young did way better than anticipated and hence lauded as vy successful.

I don't watch K2, only read comments about it. But pretty sure based on people's comments here in DB it's because Song YooNa is the only one who hard carry the show..

I think Chief Kim is doing well because it is trying something new in the korean drama landscape. It reminds me a bit of legendary british Allo Allo for some reason. there is spmething really... crispy underneath the sillyness

Missing 9 - I think people did not expect it to be THIS dark and this bloody and they were frightened away. also, if you kill the character of an idol actor in first 4 episodes, you lose all his fans, too. I am not sure if it was a smart move. (but somehow I have a feeling he might still turn up alive?)

Talking about dark and bloody I think Voice seemed more dark and bloody imho. The way the main serial killer killed his victims and not forgetting the little cases that came along every episode ....

Difference is, from Voice I expected dark and bloody from the teasers.

But Missing Nine gave off the impression it was just about survivors on an island, not a full-blown murder mystery. Still, I do like how the genre is different than I expected.

Im glad Defendant and Manager Kim are doing well in ratings.. both were unexpected winners before it started. Although ive yet to start i hope Rebel continues to gain its audience.

Not sure why i couldnt start tomorrow with you since both leads are ok for me and its a theme im usually interested in. Its so peculiar i couldnt explain why my heart idnt in to watch it.

Father il take care of you is a drama il wait for it to end before i start to marathon. I just finish Five children.. and how i hope long dramas could be more enjoyable like it.

Im still not so involved after Goblin ended.

Lastly im intrigued how tVn can salvage Introverted boss.i hope they are able to work their magic. Slipping into 1% is sth im sure they were surprised
