Gong Myung, Krystal, Yang Se-jong up for Bride of the Water God

Gong Myung, Krystal, Yang Se-jong

I guess Bride of the Water God 2017 is going on a casting spree today. Krystal (She’s So Lovable, Heirs), Gong Myung (Drinking Solo, Entertainer), and Yang Se-jong (Saimdang Light’s Diary, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim) are the latest to receive offers for tvN’s modern-day spinoff adaptation of the popular manhwa, which is currently courting Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) to play water god Ha-baek and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) to play his bride.

Krystal is up for the second lead, a goddess named Mura from the same realm where Ha-baek the water god is from. In the present-day remake, her character has lived among human beings for hundreds of years, and because of her beauty, she usually lives as an actress. She knows that she’s a god, and because she’s harbored a one-sided love for Ha-baek, she forms an immediate dislike for the heroine who’s always by Ha-baek’s side. I don’t have high hopes for Krystal, though the character sounds like a jealous second lead so I probably won’t be angsty about it if I don’t end up liking her.

Gong Myung has been offered the part of Bi-ryum, a wind god who loves Krystal’s character Mura, despite knowing that she’s in love with Ha-baek. There isn’t much character information about his present-day counterpart in the spinoff, but in the original he’s someone who helps the hero and carries a bittersweet one-sided love. Gong Myung showed potential in Drinking Solo as a puppy with a one-sided crush, so it seems like a fitting role.

Yang Se-jong is up to play Hoo-ye, the hero’s main rival for the heroine’s affections. In the manhwa, Hoo-ye is also a god of water, and he befriends Ha-baek’s bride and incites the hero’s jealousy. The character in the spinoff drama will be the CEO of a resort who falls in love with the heroine. He and the hero will recognize each other as similar beings, which causes further discord. I thought Yang Se-jong seemed way too young to be taken seriously as Yoo Yeon-seok’s rival in Romantic Doctor (Yoo Yeon-seok’s fears for a possible love triangle were so unfounded I thought it was funny), but perhaps the rivalry will work much better opposite Nam Joo-hyuk?

No one on the cast is confirmed thus far. The fantasy romantic comedy comes from the writer of Misaeng and Arang and the Magistrate and the PD of Nine and Queen In-hyun’s Man, and is projected to begin shooting in March for a broadcast later this year.

I'm pretty sure Bride of the Water God has been in the works to become a drama for a long time, long before Goblin was ever written, since it's such a popular manhwa. Trust me, being the Bride of the Water God is MUCH better than being the Goblin's Bride lol For one, it's much more attractive. I really can't see the appeal of a modern remake, though. The beauty of the manhwa was in the fantasy setting and the clothing/costumes.

True. I fell in love with the manhwa through its beautiful clothes and setting. Not really feeling the modern setting as well as the main leads... well let's see how it will go

0

The producers of this show is missing the whole point of the comics. I'm afraid they are just royal screwing up here with the modern setting.

They should just go over to Hollywood and ask for some money to get the sets for Fantasy Sageuk.

0

I admit that I was turned off by the "modern adaptation" decision. One of the things I remember loving from the manhwa (manhwa, not webtoon people) was the gorgeous detailed art put in the clothes, which were sageuk of course.

I really, really hope they keep the original essence of the manhwa and it doesn't turn into another sappy live action.

I shouldn't, but I have quite high expectations for the execution of this drama!

Why Krystal? She's so emotionless.

They go full on young cast. Each of them is interesting in their own but if all of them together, I dont see anyone can carry the drama.

Its preproduced and tvn hasnt got a hit this year yet. Lets wait and see.

This is a TVN show? And here I thought TVN is the only channel that is immune to idol (or their agencies' power).

nahh no. Ever since last year many idols appeared in tvn dramas. Key, Yoona, Sohee, Amber, Yook Sungjae. For upcoming dramas: Joy, and Krystal as mentioned in this article. Not everyone is bad of course. Sungjae is obviously good and Key was also praised by viewers.

Because they were actually GOOD in their roles/shows! But notice how all of 'em were in the Reply series. ;) That show can make anyone look good. But Eun-ji IS ACTUALLY good, though.

0

No actually TVN not that immune with idols. Many drama casted the idols, to name few - Seo Kang Joon, in Cinderella two idols from CNBlue and A-pink, Gong Myung was in Drinking Solo (also another idol too, I cannot remember his name). But most of them up for secondary / supporting roles except SKJ who was the main lead in Entourage.

Now in 2017, looks like TVN has already started to cast the idol for main lead -for eg Joy from Red Velvet or what I dont recall ghe group name. Many more to come, I guess.

Seo Kang Hoon is an idol? He is not. He is a group but of actors not singers. D

He is an idol too, it is just their agency made the group debuted in acting first before singing.

0

Seo Kang-joon's group, 5urprise is called a "performer group" where the members are trained in acting, singing and dance. They are "idols" but their goal is to focus on acting, I think.

0

I honestly think that in a few years, TVN will probably be no different from the big 3.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

tvN probably casts just as many idols as the major broadcasting stations but the difference is that they usually have really good directors that can mask their shortcomings. And then of course they seem to either have good luck or a good eye for casting idols who are actually GOOD at acting... whether it be someone like Jung Eunji who had never acted before in her life (I'm still astounded that she was a 100% green newbie in AM1997) or Im Si-wan who had previous acting experience.

I actually think the PD of Reply series has the good eye for the rookies and idols. He will comeback with new drama, not Reply series but a new prison drama and more on black comedy. He has said he is looking for fresh faces so expect more idols too. I just managed to watch Reply 1997 and not the other two, hopefully the PD will cast someone underrated tok for main casts. Maybe someone like Kim Seul Gi.

So I was curious how many idols have been in tvN's series over the years myself, so I did some wikipedia research (consisting of much link clicking) and came up with:

- 2AM: Jinwoon (Marriage, Not Dating)
- 2AM: Seulong (Hogu's Love)
- 2PM: Junho (Memory)
- 2PM: Taecyeon (Who Are You, Let's Fight Ghost)
- 5urprise^: Gong Myung (Drinking Solo)
- 5urprise^: Kang Taeoh (Twenty Years, Twenty Again)
- 5urprise^: Lee Taehwan (High School King of Savvy)
- 5urprise^: Seon Kangjoon (Cheese in the Trap, Entourage)
- After School: Nana (The Good Wife)
- After School: Uee (Birdie Buddy, Hogu's Love), though I'm not sure anyone remembers she's an idol anymore (including her agency)
- APink: Chorong (Plus 9 Boys)
- APink: Eunji (Reply 1997)
- APink: Naeun (Twenty Again, Cinderella and the 4 Knights)
- B1A4: Baro (Reply 1994)
- Baby V.O.X (disbanded): Shim Eun-jin (Yellow Boots)
- Beast: Doojoon (Let's Eat, Let's Eat 2)
- Beast: Junhyung (Monstar)
- Bestie: Haeryung (Nine: Nine Times Travels)
- BTOB: Sungjae (Reply 1994, Plus 9 Boys, Goblin)
- CNBlue: Jungshin (Cinderella and the 4 Knights)
- CNBlue: Yonghwa (The 3 Musketeers)
- DIA: Chaeyeon (Drinking Solo)
- f(x): Amber (Entourage)
- Girl's Day: Hyeri (Reply 1988)
- Girl's Generation: Sooyoung (The 3rd Hospital, Dating Agency: Cyrano)
- Girl's Generation: Yoona (The K2)
- g.o.d: Yoon Kyesang (The Good Wife)
- GLAM (disbanded): Dahee (Monstar)
- Infinite: Hoya (Reply 1997)
- Infinite: L (Shut Up Flower Boy Band)
- Kara (disbanded): Youngji (Another Oh Hae-young)
- LUV (disbanded): Jeon Hye-bin (Another Oh Hae-young), which only lasted a year, but technically she started as an idol
- MBLAQ (former): Lee Joon (Gap-dong)
- M.I.L.K (disbanded): Park Heevon (Bubblegum), yes, that was really a girl group
- Sech Kies (disbanded): Eun Jiwon (Reply 1997)
- Secret: Hyoseong (Introverted Boss)
- Secret (former): Sunhwa (Marriage, Not Dating)
- SF9: Chani (Signal), though he was a child actor before he became an idol
- Shinee: Key (Drinking Solo)
- Shinhwa: Eric Mun (Another Oh Hae-young)
- Sunny Hill: Jubi (I Love Lee Tae-ri)
- Super Junior (former): Kibum (I Love Lee Tae-ri)
- T-ara (former): Hwayoung (Ex-Girlfriend Club)
- Tachyon (disbanded): Son Hojun (Reply 1994)
- The Grace (former): Stephanie (Introverted Boss)
- Tiny G (disbanded): Dohee (Reply 1994)
- Wonder Girls (disbanded): Sohee (Heart to Heart, Entourage)
- Wonder Girls (disbanded): Yenny (Basketball)
- ZE:A (disbanded): Hyungsik (Nine: Nine Times Travels)
- ZE:A (disbanded): Siwan (Misaeng)

^ 5urprise is sort of cheating, since they're actors who formed an idol group.

So yeah, tvN's cast plenty of idols over the years. And some are good actors (and some are not).

the obsession with SM,
as I know SM has the most active idol out of the big 3,
YG only has 1 new girl and 3 old act, JYP 1 and like 3 other old group, like 2 PM, Got 7 , Suzy?
SM has SNSD whic 3/4 member into acting, Fx 3 member in acting, Shinee 3 member, Super Junior, Red Velvet.

When you have more active, it wasn't pour them into anything, it because they get exposure and available.
I am sure this is also applied to other company if they have more idol just like how YG model is everywhere.
If you have too much active people on the same field, you are bound to meet a lot of them based on possibility

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. I don't mind it if it's done well/is entertaining and not just straight-up annoying, but I wish the female second leads were a bit more complex and varied. One second lead I loved last year was Pretty Oh Hae-young! In fact, by the end of the drama I may have liked her more than Our Oh Hae-young.

Jeon Hye Bin was great as Pretty OHY, in fact she was great as second lead to Choi Ji Woo as well in Woman with a Suitcase,.If Our OHY didnt played by Seo Hyun Jin and played by someone who is mediocre, Pretty OHY probably will steal the spotlight

Among the other second female leads that I love are Yoo In Young (Mask) and this girl Han Chae Ah (Gaksital). In my opinion, the production probably afraid if the second female leads' character are written in a better way, they will steal the spotlight from the main female lead. In many drama, second female lead are also usually played by better actress. Hence the option just make the second female lead a bitchy and clingy type, just like Im Jo Eun in UF. What a wasted talent.

For me I love Our OHY the most, her character is relatable although annoying. Maybe I am extremely biased with Seo Hyun Jin, so..

But still love Pretty OHY because of Jeon Hye Bin.

0

what....i'm so touched and pleasantly surprised to find someone who actually think Oh Hae Young is irritating(since every other comment i keep finding lurvessss her)...she was fine and flawed and relatable blabla at first...but as the story progress, she just becomes downright unlikable and selfish and annoying aggravating with hardly anything to like about, especially how she treats her parents and as if she's the only important thing in the universe and no one else matters and her one track mind obsession with Dokyung, can't even feel that she loves him genuinely, more like sees him as the trophy boyfriend she can't lose. pretty Oh Hae Young was the standard annoyingly perfect second lead at first, but as the story progress she becomes so likable and pretty cool and awesome and Oh Hae Young's annoyingness only made the pretty one stood out even more. i only finished watch the drama for Sookyung n Jinsang parts honestly.

Everything about the character descriptions is practically screaming "Meh". The only new thing is that its filled with gods but remove the 'god' and you have a very dated romcom.
And the casting is not encouraging much excitement either.

The only thing that gives me hope is the writer. Seriously, the execution better surpass expectations( or lack thereof) if not..."been there, done that( and with better actors, ha!)" is the name. But I'm glad I have no expectations, they can't be dashed. Silver lining.

You're so right. The storyline is like a chaebol romance drama without the gods. If the creators are sticking to contemporary timeline, they should be more flexible about jobs for the characters, rather than actress and resort chaebol.

I think the problem here is the characterization to begin with. Rather than making Mu-ha a jealous second (bitchy) female lead, they would have described her as a badass. And making her an actress seems a bit ho-hum for me. And I do wish that she not STILL has feelings for Ha-baek since in the original story, he chose So-ha till the very end and went on to have two children with her and plus several centuries have passed which just renders her not sympathetic.
On second thoughts, they should drop all of the one-sided loves because it is getting tiring with them being gods. Finally, they should not cast all the characters with actors known to the youth market to make the show approachable because to me, it looks green.

I don't know why but SM idol castings usually completely turn me off from a drama, especially for the more popular ones. I think it's cause they're usually so in your face in real life, that I know I'm never going to slip into the fantasy of them as the character that they're supposed to play and they don't have the acting chops to fight against that precondition.

Long story short, I really hope she doesn't take it.

I think Go Myung is a little too puppyish and cute to play someone mysterious and cool like Bi Ryum (I've only ever seen him as a cute/manly student so... I haven't seen him in much. Tell me if I'm wrong please! :D)

and idk much about Yang Se Jong besides his latest drama..

Well... I'm a little more of an optimist so... Hopefully it works out!

Mura is Kang Hana, she has that evil/ powerful yet enigmatic and vulnerable aura to pull her off, Krystal, Krystal, seriously what are they smoking??

Kang Hana or Lee El.

They cast tells me they are DEFINITELY going for a different drama.

Even Lee Sung Kyung can play the character.

so judging by the cast assembled so far (albeit none confirmed) it seems acting talent is secondary then? lol or tertiary in some cases...
I mean it's fine to cast young actors but there are better young actors, hell there are better IDOL actors to choose from. and i am not even just picking on crystal. gong myung does nothing for me, njh is better than he was before but he's NOT lead material. SSK has the most experience of the ones assembled but often leaves me cold (tho i dont think she's bad at all) and i genuinely like yang se jong but like njh i dont think he's rdy for a lead or second lead in this case. he's good in saimdang since he doesnt have to carry much himself and is mostly doing a cute young guy and his older lady friend/crush/partner etc thing.

like idk why Eunji doesnt get offered more roles she's easily one of the best idol actors period, of any gender. and if we're sticking with SM, Sooyoung from SNSD is a better choice. altho i guess if the role only requires the actress be "bitchy" and jealous then w/e? -_-

tbh i was raising my eyebrows as soon as i heard that njh was their first pick for lead and they decided to put it in a modern setting. like way to take the few unique aspects of ur story and toss it out for more boring chaebol stories. but with a ~fantasy~ twist. blech.

I really loved Nam Joo Hyuk in his last drama but someone mentioned Joo Ji Hoon as a good fit for this role and now I can't un-see it x.x Joo Ji Hoon plus Moon Chae Won would have been amazing...

But still excited! Mainly because of the writer/PD combo but I do like most of these actors/actresses individually (even if the combination is weird) and think they have all been improving with each production they do. Positive thoughts!

I'm still ot sure if I'll watch because of the plot. Seems too bland.

BUT, Nam Joo Hyuk & Gong Myung? As much as he annoyed me in Drinking Solo, I will always have a soft spot for Kyle.

And I'm hoping for a decent enough showing for Krystal. I really loved her in Heirs.

Is it just me or does Yang Se Jong look like Kim Young Kwang in this picture? I've never seen him in motion.

Gong Myung could do dark (he was in a thriller named Su Saek) but it's just that a lot of people are convinced that he got offered the role due to the fact that Bi-ryum has a one-sided love for Mu-ha, so they think his puppy roles fit the bill.

But I really wish that his character will be a lot more complex.

I was hesitant about voicing any complaints before seeing some teasers, stills, and being able to give the drama a chance, but I am a little disappointed with the interpretation and the casting. When I first came across the Bride of the Water God manhua, one of the most entrancing things about the story was really the art, and I felt that it would translate beautifully as a sageuk. When I heard that they were hoping to do a modern-day version of it, I was a little worried but still had hopes about how this would play out [I suppose the idea of gods and the art's grandeur seems more appealing when in the context of a historical with dynastic emperors as opposed to a chaebol heir in a business/office environment.]

However, I was especially iffy with Nam Joo Hyuk headlining the drama - Habaek is a complicated character and I definitely didn't see him being played by someone like NJH. He did great in Weightlifting Fairy but I feel like the youth tones and the slice-of-life feel really suited him, while for this drama I feel like he's a bit young. I really felt that Habaek was one of those "old soul" characters who would be portrayed well with an older lead, and thus that brings me to expecting casting with actors who were perhaps in their 30s or late 20s [I definitely could see Moon Chae Won as Soah and would have been so excited to see her in this interpretation.]

There is so much potential for an incredibly fantastical version of the manhua and I wish they had [or had they?] possibly communicated with the original author as to casting choices? I'm not feeling the cast at the moment and feel as if the palace setup of the gods in the original manhua will translate well with this new setting and with these new characters. As of right now, it feels more like Heirs [replace the elite students with some elite deities] rather than a drama that will emphasize the angst of being cursed, arranged marriages, and ancient rites of sacrifice.

Lastly, [for people who haven't read the manga this is a semi-spoiler] but I also can't see Habaek's transformation from that of his child + man form unfold well in a modern-day setting either. Curious as to how they'll either rewrite his curse or how they'll interpret it within the drama.

I haven't read the webtoon but the more I read about it, the more I lament the lost potential. The King Loves read better than this character descriptions.

But look at the bright side, if they screw up this modern version, then a remake would be a possibility in its original Saeguk setting.

haha ... let's add another deviation from the original manhwa ... make hae baek someone who suffers from split personality ... he has a childlike personality during the day but becomes manly manly at night ... geez ... i don't know what to think ... i am disappointed with how the storyline mutated from its original form compounded with a lackluster cast ... i am not sure who is going to drive the cast as they all seem green to me for this kind of drama ... other than the writer, i don't think that the drama has a solid foundation but i may be mistaken ...

I'm feeling more convinced that the Korean tv drama industry is starting to resemble the movie industry in Hollywood. Since the latter cannot be 'fresh', it is focusing on remakes and sequels and is taking ideas from books and games. It's sad because the book authors and game staff pretty much worked hard to deliver an engaging story and fascinating characters, only for movie writers and directors to lessen the quality due to profits and time frame.
So I actually feel sorry for the manhwa's creator since she worked several years for her universe and she probably agreed to let the drama adaptation to be created for her and her fans to visualize the beautiful world and characters in live action, which is instead opting for a modern setting due to budget and time...

i agree with you. i ditched hollywood for korean dramas and movies as these are refreshing and well produced projects but lately we are seeing more of catering to cliche and casting popular but less deserving actors and idols.

I would love to see Lee Dong Wook play as the Water God. He was so good playing an immortal in Goblin that I would love seeing him take on a similar role.

And while I'm dreaming, Moon Chae Won would be the lead actress. And the genre would go back to fantasy sageuk instead of modern-day rom-com...

Ugh, it just kills me that they have so much potential and they're wasting it. Still, fingers crossed that this drama won't be as much of a train-wrek as I imagine. I'd still give the first few episodes a try, if only for the production team.

Lee dong wook x moon chae won would be a power couple ! Damn how i wish they'd reconsider this remake. Or is it too late to wish for a missing 9 like change? Can they please give this project to someone who'd consider a different cast? Also i really wish they'd stay true to the original manhwa or atleast don't link this to the original manhwa *sobs while praying*

Either Krystal is really busy and only have time to play second lead or due to her last drama she is bumped down from first female lead to second lead now?? Is that possible ? Because you mostly see actors going from being the second lead to main female/male lead. To name a few on top of my head: Nam Goong Min, Park Bo-gum, Park Hyung Sik, Lee Sung Kyung, Nam Joo Hyuk, Yoon Kyun Sang and Chae Soo Bi.
