Name That Drama: And tragic stuff happens

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Name That Old(?) Movie

Hi! I’m a fan of your site. Your drama recaps are absolutely essential for my drama obsession!

Anyway, I hope you can help me find this movie. The only clue I have is that it is an old movie, possibly adapted from a manga, because a few years ago I kind of read a manga that resembled that movie. But, silly me, I also forgot about the manga itself! It’s a warrior style movie with sword dueling, flying ninjas, and everything. It’s period, but not Joseon I think, because the hairstyles were different.

What I vaguely remember is that there’s a scene with a very beautiful sword dance performed by the heroine. In the ending, the hero hugs the heroine, who died saving him. He tearfully asks his friend(?) to cover his son’s eyes (I remember the son was pretty like a girl), then he proceeded to commit suicide with the sword that killed the heroine.

That’s all I can remember. Hope you can help me! Thanks!

  2. This one might be a bit tough

There’s this drama I saw several years ago, where the girl lost her memories and she couldn’t remember her own name. The king is in love with her, but he thinks she is dead. I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called, or I feel like I’m confusing it with another drama!

  3. I remember this one, and instantly reached for a tissue

I’m looking for a drama where I saw a snippet of one scene where it takes place in a jail cell. I think they snuck a little girl in to see her dad cause he was in jail and they were crying. Sorry. That’s all I remember. Really want to watch it if only I knew the name. Thanks!

  4. Resisting every urge to name this one

I started watching a movie that I thought was The Man From Nowhere, only it wasn’t… at least I don’t think it is, because the first scene was different. So there was a man on the street waiting for his pregnant wife who was either driving her car or waiting in the car when a truck of doom comes slamming into her. She dies as does the baby, right before his eyes… but that’s all I remember. I think the movie was supposed to be about him getting revenge. Please help! Also pretty sure the truck of doom was a garbage truck… I think…

  5. Darn those meddlesome exes

I remember watching this many years ago when I was young. I think this was one of those contract marriages and there was one scene that stuck out to me. I think this was shortly after the leads finally developed feelings for one another and were going to go on a real date.

They were supposed to go to a movie or musical, but the lead guy was called away, so he sent the lead girl to meet him at the place. I recall both of them wearing white. It was pretty late (I think he actually went to meet his ex), and by the time he got to their meeting place he was afraid that she already left. He turned to leave but at the last minute, he rounded a corner and saw her leaning against a tree sleeping… and that’s all I got.

I would really appreciate the help! Thanks in advance!

  6. This sounds horrifically sad

I don’t even remember if I’ve already sent this in or not, but here goes. (By the way, thanks for the genius idea! Name That Drama/Movie is so great!!)

This movie is not recent. At least before 2009. There was this girl as the main character (at least I think so), and she was pretty young when the movie starts. Somebody in her family dies tragically, some stuff happens in between, and then the family moves to America. While she is there, she goes to high school (or maybe not, hehe) and an American she becomes close to or something recommends a road trip while being a bus driver or something.

Also, this might have been Tennessee, but unsure about that too. Anyways, the happy girl and her father (there may have been other people in her family too) take the advice and go on a bus trip. At this one stop the girl and the others (if there were any) go out to eat lunch while the dad stays in the bus to protect the money and all. A foreign lady dressed in black holding this white bundle like a baby hurriedly knocks at the bus door while the dad is eating, looking back as if somebody is chasing her. So the dad opens the bus door, and it turns out that instead of a baby, the woman was hiding a gun and threatens the dad.

He offers up the money box, cowering, but the woman kills the dad anyways, and he’s lying outside on the pavement shot dead. A crowd gathers around him, and the girl has a bad feeling about the crowd in front of their bus, and she force her way and finds her dad. She has flashbacks about how the first family member had died because it had been similar, and she drops to her knees next to the dad, sobbing. I remember the crowd just stays like that, not even giving her any comfort, and I stopped watching because I don’t like gruesome deaths or sad scenes. Now I want to know what happens or if there even is a happy ending.

That was really long, but I hope somebody has watched this somewhere and knows!! Thanks in advance!

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

If I was the one asking, I'll probably describe it as, "There's this scene. It made me cry. Lotsa, lotsa snotty crying."

I think#5 is Full House.... the main guy very often ditched the main girl for his ex. Also, the scene is vaguely familiar.

The rest I can't guess... guess I haven't watched enough dramas :)

I'm not sure if it's Full House. Some parts sound like Full House for the marriage contract and date. But the last part about leaning at the tree and sleeping... it does not sound like Full House. I think after Young Jae stood Ji Eun on the date (and the date was actually eating at the restaurant), she went home, and they had big fight after that which made Ji Eun ran away during the heavy rain, and ended up calling Min Hyuk...

I don't know if I get messed up here and there, hehehehe.

I have to agree - I recently re-watched it and don't remember a tree scene at the end of the failed date...she went back home and they had a big fight...

Oh no. 2 I think would be The Moon that Embraces the Sun.. they met as a teenager where the boy was a crown prince and she was going to be his sejabin. But the queen dowager wanted to put another girl from her clan as sejabin. Thus, she planned the whole sorcery thing to kill the sejabin. But the shaman faked her death and while getting her consciousness she realized she was stuck in a coffin and thus losing her memories. Then she lived her life as a shaman and met again few years later with the crown prince but he already become king.

Maybe number 4 is secret?

It can't be Secret, in Secret the girl is pregnant but not in a car. And she is not hit by a truck but by another car.

I have seen it (such a good movie) and if she thinks it's not Ahjussi then yeah it sounds pretty much to be 'I Saw the Devil'.

Required fields are marked *

No. It is not from i saw the devil movie.
i have watched the movie.

First scene, is actually, when the lead guy's pregnant wife calls him ,when he is at some other place getting evidence about ( since he is a detective) , and his pregnant wife is somewhere else , in the car, and it was a very snowy night, and and there was a truck nearby her car, and the driver is the rapist( villain) ,, and he kind of pretended to be a 'mechanic' and she felt something creepy about him, and she was about to tell her husband on the phone, when he threw a heavy rod/ hammer at her and crushed her face. There was not a truck of doom.

I'm like 99% sure #4 is Man from Nowhere since the scene that was described IS in that movie and it has a revenge plot.

Number 2# could be
- The Moon That Embracing The Sun
- Chronicle of Life (Chinese Drama)
I remember the female lead get amnesia after very tragic accident then get into a different household, they met again when they were adult and the King keeps asking if he knew the girl (with her real name) and she said she isn't that girl.

I am not sure but no. 1 could be a japanese movie instead of korean. Shinobi? ( the one after Basilisk manga). But that´s too recent for the description.

crap, I mean, if it has ninjas, I of all should know, but I have no clue. Teacher will punish me.

I know the first 3 (or 4).

1. Duelist
2. The Moon that Embraces the Sun
3. Miracle in Cell #7
4. I think it could be the Lee Byung Hun/Cho Min Sik thriller (and a brilliant gruesome, revenge movie imho) I Saw the Devil

Required fields are marked *

I own and LOVE the Duelist but it's not #1... the heroine lives and the hero is the son (whose father is a bad dude) and the father ends up dead... the son/hero - it's implied that he died (but I like to think he didn't)

Required fields are marked *

#1 is definitely Bichunmoo. The ending scene scene where the friend covers the eyes of the son so he doesn't see his father commit suicide was very unique and memorable to that movie.

2. Moon embracing Sun: One of the most unique Saeguk dramas i watched, and i so remember it very vividly

3. Miracle in cell no 7: one of the most beautful, famous movies of the recent times.

4. It must be from The Man from Nowhere. The first scene wasn't that actually , but the accident part FITS PERFECTLY WITH the description
.
the lead guy(Won bin) went to buy shoes for the baby that is to be born, Just as and he comes out from the shop buying a very pretty small pair of white shoes , then a call came to his phone and he took it, but the person from the other line wasnt speaking. He was outside the shop, and , across the street, his pregnant wife sits in the car, and he waves at her, and she waves him back, and then came truck of doom, which killed his wife and the unborn baby, right infront of his eyes, and he gets shot too later.

I think " . . . and tragic stuff happens" could be the title for 80-85% of weekend dramas. If you were to add a few other choices of phrases I think you could get to 95%. Like the magnetic fridge poetry kits but for K-drama plots.

- guy meets girl
- he's rich
- she's poor
- parents object
- long, long ago
- somewhere in seoul
- parental debt / sin
- first love
- initial dislike
- love triangle / square
- fate(d) / destiny(destined)
- doppelganger
- evil step-mother-father-sister-brother
- chaebol in disguise
- amnesia
- truck of doom
- snotty rich kid
- haughty exterior with kind interior

What am I missing? How may K-drama phrases would we need to cover 95%+ dramas?

;)

#5 Mary Stayed Out All Night (?)

It had some aspects of the drama but it's been a lon time since I've watched it so I may have my details wrong. It's probably wrong because they didn't have a contract dating thing but it was a deal between the two leads. And I know there was a bit where JGS's character kept meeting with his ex.

I'm probably wrong about this lol, but just thought I'd take a guess. I've been a beanie for 6 years and this is my first time commenting :D
