Smiling shyly and hiding feelings in The Liar and His Lover

Lee Hyun-woo’s’s (Moorim School) upcoming drama The Liar and His Lover released its first teasers that show beautiful closeups of the baby-faced actor and his leading lady, Red Velvet’s Joy. The drama is a Korean adaptation of the Japanese manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru about the innocent love story between a prodigy composer who hides his identity and a female high school student who falls in love with him at first sight.

In his teaser, Lee Hyun-woo flashes a smile, while his voiceover hints at his hesitation toward taking a risk for love. He says, “I lie again today, because I don’t want my heart to be revealed. Because I want to be by her side, I lie.” But it seems like Joy already knows his secret, and she’s not deterred. In her teaser, she grins brightly at the camera, telling us, “I found someone I like. It’s my first love, but he keeps lying to me.”

PD Kim Jin-min (Marriage Contract, Time Between the Dog and Wolf) is helming The Liar and His Lover over at tvN, and in the script read photos, it looks like everyone’s having a good time. According to reports, he’s being very open and free about the filming process, inviting the actors to feel comfortable about ad-libbing and infusing personality into their characters.

Lee Jung-jin (The K2) plays Lee Hyun-woo’s mentor/manager hyung who recruits him into an idol band, and Lee Seo-won (Uncontrollably Fond) plays the band’s bassist. But I’m most excited for Choi Min-soo (Jackpot) who is going to be Lee Hyun-woo’s father. After seeing him in Jackpot and Warrior Baek Dong-soo, I know how messed up a father figure he can be, so I’m kinda nervous to see what type of emotional damage he might wreak on Lee Hyun-woo. Worst mother of 2016, Park Ji-young (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo), is also going to be in this drama, not as a mom but an entertainment company CEO. So I think it’ll be an interesting mix of experienced actors and newbies.

tvN’s The Liar and His Lover premieres in March in Introverted Boss’s Monday-Tuesday slot.

Awww...Lee Hyun-woo look so sweet in the teaser. I (pray!!) really hope this drama gonna deliver well. With such experienced actor (CMS, worst Mom etc) as well as good PD, my fingers are crossed for good project. LHW need one after that fiasco at Moorim School ???

Man, that's some REALLY close-up shots they had them in! Just can't help noticing how confident you have to be since you're being filmed that closely and of course, their skin still looks flawless (I know it's the makeup and the editing, but still)! ANYWAYS, I'm gonna watch the Japanese movie adaptation of The Liar and His Lover before this drama version comes out just to get a better idea of the story and it'll be fun to compare and contrast! PD-nim sounds like a cool person for being so open and free about ab libs.

She has literally zero experience...not even a webdrama or anything...

I honestly feel bad for her, it feels like they're throwing her to the sharks with no lifeline. I can't see this being beneficial for her or the show.

Lots of inexperienced actors are given lead roles. I don't think it's a bad thing if they can act well! Just look at Jung Eun-ji in Answer Me 1997. She had never even received acting lessons before that drama. She's a natural.

I'll give Joy the benefit of the doubt :) She might surprise us.

Honestly, the ratio of good idol actor is 20%, i don't want a good drama being wasted by a bad actor... she could have debuted with 2nd lead roles.
I don't know why SM is trying to put his idols literally on every drama

Yes majority aren't good and still get lead roles. The producers forgot if the idols can't act, the whole drama is wasted cos people will drop it. Furthermore the idols' reputation will be affected.

If they get offers why wouldn't SM put their idols in dramas. It's an opportunity for their artists to branch out and get public appeal if they're good at their job.

Instead of blaming the company who will obviously try to find their artists jobs maybe the casting director is at fault for even extending an offer to Joy.

We haven't seen a glimpse of her acting, it can be the worst acting we've seen or it maybe tolerable or it can even be surprisingly good. Let's just hold back until we actually have something to criticise her about, that is, her acting.

Preach!

Just the words right out my mouth. Nobody can phrase it better

Because that idol's group is famous with teens and they need her demographic to watch this drama and hype this up. It's a business decision not an artistic decision to cast idols.

I was wary with Joy's casting because this is her first acting experience, but I'm glad the PD encourage the actors to adlibbed and be themselves, so maybe the acting will feel more natural.

because She won the audition where more than 200 people participate. This drama need someone who can sing so most probably why she was chosen

And the drama needs someone who can sing REALLY well (I haven't heard her sing, but hoping if she's in a group she has good pipes).

The girl cast in the Jmovie version, Sakurako Ōhara, had only had 1 or 2 VERY minor roles before being cast by audition for the part. Not only did she do a great job acting, imo, she also has an amazing voice and really sold the vocal reveal.

I'm suddenly lowkey looking forward to this drama, i think its the Marraige Contract connection. Because of the PD, I don't think the acting will be a problem. Lets hope the writing holds up!

I'm quite surprised they got Choi Min Soo. I thought this drama is gonna be like Moorim School where nobody watched it (no offense to Lee Hyun Woo). But then I realized it's TvN and they have some good actors in it. So..it should be good, right?

I've seen the movie version with Takeru Sato my love, err one of my loves. In that adaptation Aki looks disheveled and has a jaded/broken inside feel to him, but seeing LHW so shiny and cute in that close up, hmm.. ok. I haven't read the manga though so still looking forward to this.

p.s. maybe the reason they got an idol for the female lead is because the character is supposed to have a very nice singing voice.

The aki from Manga acts and looks exactly like Sato Takeru's version on the movie. It's just Sato's version was more moody and 'hiding' and the manga has this Sato's entire aura and mood with just cute baby face.

The manga was amazing, tough. IT WAS AMAZING. The feeling i got from this was more sunny like, while the reason why i love the manga was because it was depressingly angsty and frustrating.

yes... this not only about love story, but also the harsh of entertainment world. when musician has to choose between idealism and real world. Aki is broken, subtly .. Sato potrayed that very well..
I think thats why I think its rare to find good Korean adaption from Jdrama/movie/manga. Because everything seem too polished and the story become less deep.

The manga was amazing is it still ongoing though?

I think they cast idol cause riko/sorim is portrayed as having gift in singing. Appearance and singing wise, Joy is a good choice but idk about her acting. Lee Hyunwoo as Aki though, I still can't imagine it lol. Let's just see how he will portray Kang Hankyul.

I don't like high school drama as I am way past that age but Lee Hyun Woo is an exception. I like Moorim School. Not the best drama but I watched from beginning to end.

I don't understand the hype about TVN. Most of their dramas are cheaply produced, Goblin is not an exception no matter how well rated it is.

I'll just ignore that initial poster. Don't know where their comparisons are but tvN dramas have good plot lines, are slick and their actors are usually good. I presume the person factored in the actors salaries cos' some of them aren't cheap.

If they want to really compare- it's the wèekend dramas which have minimal sets and actors.

Well sorry for pun intend, But they are really wasting money with that flashy and blockbuster camera work. It's looks so pretty, but lacking good editing and visual storytelling. It might be due to live shooting, It's become incoherent production for me. Look at the bigger picture. It's fine if you are using slow motion in order to get the feel and melancholic tone, but instead it look all over the place, using alot unnecesary flashback just to feel screen time. PPL is all over the place. Feel bad for the PD, he should be working with better writers, we might be seeing what he is capable of.

I don't like Goblin too, but for Cinematography I thought they were really good, almost movie like, wth are you smoking?

Well, Goblin has nice pictures in the first few episodes but the sound quality was terrible. What's more terrible? The amount of flashbacks? Why do you think they use excessive and unnecessary flackbacks? Because... they don't have enough footage. How about the horrible sound quality? I think they don't have time to edit it properly. I found out it's actually a live shoot drama. On top of that, they didn't actually invest on musical scores.

Someone mentioned that CJ is a big corporation... Exactly! So they should have invested more. But it's I am in a position to say that. But as a viewer I can say that it does not have the quality like some are saying. Who's smoking? I am the one who's deluded.

Movies? Good quality movies have
a. Amazing musical score
b. Don't spoon fee everything but allow audience to see the movie in their own perspective.
c. No unnecessary flashbacks.
d. Good sound quality. Unlike Goblin, it sounded like it wasn't edited at all.
e. etc.

0

@ Avakkai : I'm pretty much agree.

0

tvN shows have very nice cinematography in general, and I mean real talent in editing not those brightening filters, and these type of details cost money. They are also owned by one of the largest entertainment conglomerates CJ so I think to them money is less of an issue than bad reviews, they are trying to build a brand here like how HBO branded itself as a premium cable channel with its original content.

Hemmm... I have no idea what you mean by cheap. But if you're talking about the houses in tvN dramas which mostly look so studio-ish, then I sadly have to agree with you.

However, what make tvN dramas so good and well-received is not the big budget they invested. It's because they dare to be different from the top 3 tv channel. They give dramas with unpopular concepts chance to prove themselves and allow the drama makers to express their creativity without interfering much. The result are refreshing dramas such as Reply Series and Signal. Tbh, I can't imagine drama like Reply Series and Signal make a pass in the top 3 tv channel. Even if the the top 3 tv channel had accepted them, they would've become very different drama than we've already seen.

I'm not sure if Lee Hyun Woo and Joy can pull off the main lead characters. Maybe Korean version is a bit different from original. I know Hyun Woo is a good actor but IMO, I don't think he is suitable to play the main lead. I was not a fan of his character in Moorim school. So, let's just see how he will portray Aki.

I don't really know about Joy's singing as well as her acting but Sakurako Ohara really did a good job in portraying Riko.

Hopefully these two will do a good job in portraying their characters because I expect more from them.

I think it will probably be pretty dang different (esp. in tone) from the original! Just realized how creepy it would be if the drama followed some of the original storylines (what with Lee Jung-jin being the producer, and Joy being Riko).

I cannot really remember him played a lead role except that weekend drama with Eugene. Most of time I watched him as secondary roles. I didnt watch all of his drama though. Well, maybe it is better to play some significant supporting roles, rather than forgettable lead roles. By the way, he did well in K2, I even thought he should be part of main casts instead of Song Yoon Ah's husband.

The J drama Love Song had some similarities, at least the girl wasn't a high school student.

Does the story not work if the female is out of high school?

Having seen the J movie, do not know about Joy since she is a newbie but her character is to be cute school girl with amazing vocal cords so she might actually fit being an idol and all. The problem for me LHW, he just doesnt fit the image of introvert playboy musical genius. This role should ideally be given to someone like Lee Minki or Sung Joon.

Being TvN no doubt the production value would be stunning but I will stick to dramabeans recaps for this one.
