Top 10 favorite dramas of all time

javabeans: And here we are, with the last of our 10th-anniversary Top 10 lists! Our initial goal in doing these Top 10’s was to celebrate our 10th birthday, and while we didn’t quite make all 10 fit into our birthday month, better late than never?

girlfriday: Since we’re 10 years old all year long, I think it counts!

javabeans: We do intend to keep writing Top 10 lists, but this puts an end to our Anniversary 10 Top 10’s for the time being.

girlfriday: Our last list is, appropriately, Top 10 favorite dramas of all time.

javabeans: We opened this one up to the rest of our staff, and it was fascinating to see not only which titles everyone picked, but also their reasoning for going that way. One person might have been influenced most by character, another by plot, another by emotional response.

girlfriday: I had a lot of fun reading everyone’s lists, so we hope you do too!

There are great dramas that can be excellent fun while watching, but they don’t make my all-time favorites list without this one crucial element: feeling that perfect (or close-to-perfect) sense of satisfaction at the end. These are the dramas that make me sigh in contentment, feel that every minute was worth it, and leave a warm glow for years to come.

1. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Captures the turmoil of adolescence, with bromance and rock music.

2. Princess’s Man: One of the fiercest, most resourceful heroines around. Thrilling and romantic.

3. Delightful Girl Chun-hyang: A sentimental favorite! Funny, sweet, and satisfying.

4. Soulmate: Witty, refreshing take on modern love with a breezy attitude.

5. Joseon X-Files: Smartly written, mind-bending plot twists, wryly funny, and unexpectedly moving.

6. Return of Iljimae: Achingly poignant, beautiful, wistful. Not one false step.

7. Gaksital: Epic. Intense. It’ll shred you up and stick with you for ages.

8. Dal Ja’s Spring: Relatable heroine, sweet romance, uplifting take on modern careers and friendships.

9. Story of a Man: Sometimes dark, sometimes zippy fun—capers, bromance, and a satisfyingly matched hero-villain standoff.

10. This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair: Both cuttingly painful and cuttingly funny, interwoven with hope and understanding.

These are the dramas that burrowed into my soul and took up residence there, leading me down countless imaginary roads where their stories continued and I never had to say goodbye. My favorite stories are the ones that naturally lead me to write a second season in my head, because the characters just refuse to go towards the light.

1. Answer Me 1997: My era, my youth, my story.

2. Misaeng: This drama is how I feel about adulthood. This explains my reluctance to be an adult.

3. Coffee Prince: My ideal romance, if the world were perfect.

4. I Hear Your Voice: Pure addiction in drama form. My favorite cohabitation hijinks and noona romance in one.

5. Return of Iljimae: Sweeping origin story of a hero full of loneliness and pathos.

6. My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: Grade A beef rom-com comfort food. Nom nom nom.

7. Gaksital: Sometimes history is the best drama, and ordinary heroes are the most extraordinary.

8. School 2013: The only drama couple I ship in real life.

9. Splish Splash Love: Such a perfect little dose of swoony fantasy romance in such a small bite.

10. White Christmas: Left me scarred for life. Why do I keep rewatching it?

HeadsNo2

I always gravitate more toward dramas with both intellectual and emotional value, so these aren’t just my favorites, they’re also dramas I would wholeheartedly recommend without a moment’s hesitation as perfect examples of what K-dramas bring to the table that other forms of television media rarely can: an unmatched sense of pathos, a complete story, and the ability to both immerse and transport us.

1. White Christmas: Gorgeous, dark, twisty, what-is-the-nature-of-humanity masterpiece.

2. Chuno: Manes of glory and abs and Jang Hyuk, oh my!

3. Tree With Deep Roots: That villain reveal is still unmatched. Also, Jang Hyuk.

4. Liar Game: Best drama villain ever, best hero ever, best mind games. #sixseasonsandamovie

5. Six Flying Dragons: It’s like my fifth favorite drama wrapped around my third favorite drama.

6. End of the World: Death and disease on an apocalyptic scale? Yes please.

7. Conspiracy in the Court: Gripping, depressing, uplifting, unrelenting, masterful.

8. Punch: Amazing villain, deft storytelling, out of this world acting.

9. Heartless City: Dark like my soul.

10. History of the Salaryman: Truly one of a kind, offbeat and hilarious. All hail Yeo-chi.

gummimochi

Take one look at this list and here’s what you can learn about me: I like my heroes flawed, my villains smart, and the darker and grittier the dramaverse, the better. My demands are simple, but hard to meet when it comes to all-time faves, and these are the stories that have secured an eternal place in my heart.

1. Heartless City: Bros before hos, and sometimes drugs.

2. Signal: Can you hear my still beating heart now? Good.

3. Bad Guys: It takes one to know one.

4. Story of a Man: Brainy is the new sexy.

5. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Eye Candy.

6. Punch: Sock it to ’em.

7. Liar Game: Go big or go home.

8. Soulmate: This is not a love song.

9. Kill Me, Heal Me: I can’t split my love for you into seven.

10. Autumn Fairy Tale: Won Bin, the original Oppa.

dramallama

It’s difficult to articulate my subjectivity and natural draw to my favorite dramas, but my final picks ultimately depended on my chemistry with the drama itself. Something in the narratives of these dramas sparked my inclination to fall into the stories head first and remain captured by them through the end.

1. Signal: Waiting for the walkie talkie crackle from Season 2 to let me know that it’s happening.

2. Healer: Clever and lonely night errand boy with adorable alter egos finds people he’d risk his life to protect.

3. Answer Me 1997: A nostalgia for young effervescence that woke up the fangirl I never knew existed.

4. My Name is Kim Sam-soon: The original mortified and unapologetic heroine who strutted away all her haters. She was my idol.

5. Misaeng: Life will always be tragically incomplete, but at least we’re trying to complete it together.

6. Dear My Friends: When I grow up, I want to be them.

7. Gaksital: Epically treacherous. Epically revolutionary. So. Freaking. Epic.

8. Full House: Imagine younger Rain playing himself and adorably dancing to “Gom Se Mari” to cheer up his cohabiter.

9. Queen In-hyun’s Man: Just keep kissing the Joseon scholar until he figures out what it means.

10. Famous Chil Princesses: The family drama that made me want to live in a family drama. Maybe Lee Seung-gi and Park Hae-jin have a little to do with that.

LollyPip

I don’t really have any particular theme or reasons for my top ten, other that that these are the shows that have grounded and increased my love for Korean dramas for one reason or another. And it’s difficult to condense into one sentence why I love them so much, but I’ll do my best — basically, I just love them because I love them, and that’s all there is to it.

1. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Favorite relationship, Bok-ju and Joon-hyung were perfect for each other in every way.

2. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Favorite boys, I’m still upset Eye Candy isn’t a real-life band.

3. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop: Favorite first Korean drama, the one that started it all.

4. The King 2 Hearts: Favorite downfall of an anti-hero due to love, also favorite second lead (I love you Earnest Bot).

5. School 2013: Favorite bromance, no romance could ever hold a candle to the love between Nam-soon and Hyung-soo.

6. Queen In-hyun’s Man: Favorite time-traveler (Boong-do will always be my ideal sexy nerd).

7. Answer Me 1997: Favorite bit of nostalgia… who can forget their first boy-band crushes?

8. Coffee Prince: Favorite cross-dressing drama, and my favorite first kiss.

9. Arang and the Magistrate: Favorite fantasy, the lore and world-building are still unmatched.

10. Heart to Heart: Favorite show I’ve recapped, I can’t even really say why, just that I enjoyed every minute of it.

odilettante

As a “love ‘em and leave ‘em” drama addict, “favorite” primarily means “watched more than once.” Likely drama candidates contain memorable characters, establish a sense of ownership after experiencing the debut of now beloved actors/actresses, and exploit my weakness for an ensemble cast filled with oddball personalities.

1. Answer Me 1997: “The reason I like you? … Because you’re you.”

2. What’s Up?: students filling my soul with their stories and song

3. Misaeng: the joy and pain of an exquisitely crafted drama

4. White Christmas: it’s not the holidays without Merry Mad Mir-eu

5. City Hall: Kim Sun-ah at her best, both comedically and emotionally

6. Story of a Man: platonic ideal of cat-and-mouse games (plus Park Ki-woong!)

7. Harvest Villa: goes to 11 on the “dark and quirky” dial

8. Flower Boy Next Door: Webtoon Editor is my patronus

9. King of Dramas: Jung Ryeo-won *heart eyes* and “What would Anthony do?”

10. Coffee Prince: Waffle Prince is the only prince I need

Saya

This list is fluid and ever-changing—it’s what I love now, with a slant towards recent shows because my memory sucks. It also doubles as my “shows I hawk to K-drama virgins”-list. For me, these shows transcend culture, language, and genre, to make a full meal for my hungry heart.

1. Signal: I don’t think I need to explain this one.

2. Healer: Just so heart-bursting and badass.

3. I Hear Your Voice: Hits every single sweet spot.

4. Two Weeks: Grand High Oppa, Lee Jun-ki.

5. Secret: I discover revenge melos. Where were you all my life.

6. I Remember You: Creepy, funny and bleeding-hearty.

7. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Aaall the bromance forever! Scraping my heart off the pavement.

8. Faith: I adore old-fashioned romances, especially when they involve sword-wielding warriors.

9. Dal-ja’s Spring: Also noona romances.

10. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: And youthful romances. Everything about this drama is unadulterated joy.

awcoconuts

If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only take ten dramas with me, which ten would I take? Here’s my list as of this writing, but I can’t promise that a new show (or a new-to-me, but old show) won’t cause an overhaul in the future.

1. Answer Me 1988: Wholly satisfying on so many levels.

2. Healer: Swoony hero + plucky heroine = consummate romance.

3. School 2013: Teenage angst, wrapped in a perfectly imperfect package.

4. Coffee Prince: Whether man or alien, love conquers all (harbinger of #9).

5. My Name is Kim Sam Soon: Sassy protagonist changes the drama landscape.

6. Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs: A favorite friends-to-lovers tale.

7. Sandglass: Deservedly the drama of the decade, possibly the century.

8. Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Puppy love packs an unexpectedly emotional punch.

9. You From Another Star: No one’s immune to Chun Song-yi’s charms.

10. The Lonely Shining Goblin: Flawed, but if you’re in the mood for melancholy…

chickachunga

My favorites are relatively recent except for a few oldies in the mix. I generally gravitate towards human and/or dark dramas with deft writing; eye candy isn’t even a requirement for me anymore! Perhaps because of my quarterlife crisis, I have a preference for pathos over sunshine and rainbows.

1. Misaeng: Jang Geu-rae got me TOO well.

2. Signal: The two operative words will always be “must” and “watch.”

3. I Hear Your Voice: I finally understood that the noona romance hype is real.

4. This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair: Writing and directing perfection.

5. The Producers: Behind the scenes drama never ceases to amuse me.

6. Dear My Friends: Aging is sobering, but there’s comfort in its universality.

7. Answer Me 1988: Warmed my heart like a mother’s home cooked meal.

8. Memory: Guaranteed inducer of catharsis. Didn’t mind crying in every episode.

9. Stairway to Heaven: My full-blown obsession with this one lasted many years.

10. Autumn Fairy Tale: Three beautiful actors + tear-jerking story = smitten K-drama neophyte, aged nine.

CandidClown

In the spirit of the Top Ten Countdown, I’ve divided my favorite dramas into ten categories. Granted, my selections may not be the best examples of their groupings, but when I’m in the mood for a certain type of show, these are my go-to choices.

1. Coffee Prince (Gender Bender): Proof that love is blind whether you’re man, woman, or alien.

2. Witch’s Romance (Noona Romance): The end all of noona romances. Plus, Park Seo-joon…

3. Healer (Action): Cheeky hero, plucky heroine, clever story, and beautiful action scenes.

4. I Hear Your Voice (Supernatural Twist): Adorable puppy love, and one of my favorite villains.

5. Descended From the Sun (Bromance): The main leads actually get out-chemistry-ed by the male leads.

6. Arang and the Magistrate (Fusion Sageuk): Awesome world-building and character development. And Lee Jun-ki is preeetty.

7. Queen In-hyun’s Man (Time Travel): An almost perfect show that redefines “long-distance relationship.”

8. Delightful Girl Chun-hyang (Old School): So, not that old school, but it’s the oldest of my favorites.

9. Secret (Melodrama): I watched, I cried, I angsted — rinse, repeat.

10. Scent of a Woman (Chemistry): Ignore the plot and just watch for any Tango scene.

lovepark

I love dramas with memorable characters which is why I probably favor shows with an ensemble cast or scene-stealing side characters. Effortless rapport between characters is the essential element of a good show for me.

1. Mixed-up Investigative Agency: Wacky, mysterious, and utterly brilliant.

2. Jejoongwon: The quintessential story of a remarkable underdog.

3. The Chaser: The monologues are pure gold.

4. Giant: Epic.

5. Signal: Riveting and suspenseful.

6. Queen’s Classroom: A thoughtful and sophisticated depiction of youth and school.

7. Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father: Four masterfully crafted and darkly funny episodes.

8. Bad Family: The perfect balance of outrageous comedy and family love.

9. Answer Me 1988: A nostalgic tale about family and friends that transcends time.

10. Resurrection: Dark, intricate, and an exemplar in its genre.

tineybeanie

Some dramas come and go, but these have stayed in my heart. I gravitate toward them because they’ve withstood the test of time, and I’m continually surprised by how much I enjoy them even after multiple rewatches.

1. Jumong: Best ruler origin story ever.

2. Hwang Jin-yi: Why I still try Jang Geun-seok dramas, despite all the flops.

3. Empress Ki: No man stands in the way of this female badass.

4. Full House: Celebrity’s contract marriage and Rain’s cute jealousy face. I’m sold.

5. Stairway to Heaven: Heartbreaking in the most painfully addicting way.

6. Ojakkyo Brothers: Warming like piping hot duck soup on a snowy day.

7. My Daughter Seo-young: Family drama where every subplot is heartfelt and rewarding.

8. Family’s Honor: I love you because you love a dead man – the catch-22 hurts so good.

9. Nice Guy: Ultimate prickly ice princess story, with a twist of revenge.

10. The King 2 Hearts: You can never have too much Ha Ji-won in your life.

mary

I’m surprised (and kinda embarrassed) that my favorites are nowhere near my Top 10 Objectively Best K-dramas list. Looking at it, I seem to love shows with female characters that I either support, adore, or am in awe of.

1. Delightful Girl Chun-hyang: Still waiting for my Chun-hyang ♥ Mong-ryong reunion, Drama Gods…

2. Splish Splash Love: Only Algebra can make Sejong fall in love.

3. Prosecutor Princess: No frying pans of badassery, but Unni learns lawyering while staying fabulous.

4. Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Geol-oh’s hero hiccups + Yoon-shik/hee’s nerdery = Move over, Titanic.

5. My Girl: Jun-ki’s hair is the least funniest thing in this show, and that’s saying something.

6. Dream High: Adorable Robot Suzy as a plot point. What’s not to love?

7. Heartless City: Everyone’s here for the bromance, sismance, and sexy gang war music.

8. W—Two Worlds: Really shocking and amazing start. I don’t regret watching it.

9. Tree With Deep Roots: I didn’t know a language’s history can be this bloody (awesome).

10. Age of Youth: My subconscious was split into five and they became roommates.

SailorJumun

Happy big one-oh, Dramabeans! Now with dramas, I tend to gravitate towards the outrageously weird (fantasy, slapstick, etc.). But as I get older, the slice-of-life dramas sneak their way into my heart and, inevitably, my favorites list. So yeah, I like weird. With the occasional sprinkle of ordinary.

1. My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: This will never be dethroned from its #1 spot. Never.

2. I Hear Your Voice: Redefined love for me. OTP moments still leave me breathless.

3. You From Another Star: Magic. Reminded me why I’m so obsessed with fairy tales.

4. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop: So silly, loud, and downright wild. In other words, awesome.

5. Coffee Prince: The Disney of dramas – it’s just a classic.

6. School 2013: My go-to comfort show. It’s like a nice angsty hug.

7. Pinocchio: Can never have enough Lee Jong-seok. Or writer Park Hye-ryun.

8. Healer: Jumped on this bandwagon super late, but I jumped nonetheless.

9. Brilliant Legacy: An old guilty pleasure for me and my mom.

10. Age of Youth: My soul mate in drama form. ♥

HappilyEverAfter

When I watch a drama, I’m usually in it for the comedic hijinks and heart-fluttering romances, but sometimes I can’t help but factor in other elements like a heart-wrenching bromance or a terrifying villain. Therefore, my list is organized according to “the feels when” (TFW):

1. School 2013: TFW you realize your bro hated you because he loved you.

2. I Hear Your Voice: TFW your drenched puppy is so happy to see you that nothing else matters to him.

3. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: TFW your boyfriend KNOWS he’s making your heart skip beats.

4. Protect the Boss: TFW “villains” are so hilariously ineffective that it’s endearing by the end.

5. You From Another Star: TFW Chun Song-yi brings out her rap game.

6. Master’s Sun: TFW skinship is the solution to your problems.

7. Descended From the Sun: TFW your boyfriend is a smart-talker but terrible liar.

8. You’re Beautiful: TFW you’re an ex-nun living with cute boys.

9. Sungkyunkwan Scandal: TFW your bro tries to stop you from getting yourself killed.

10. Liar Game: TFW you’re not sure who to trust in this world anymore.

murasakimi

I’m surprised to find a number of new dramas made their way onto my top ten list, but there’s no denying that the level of quality coming out of dramaland in recent years keeps surpassing expectations. For me, it’s about what characters stay in my mind and steal my heart.

1. Misaeng: Chief Oh is my favorite character of all time.

2. My Name is Kim Sam-soon: Oh wait, maybe Sam-soon?

3. Answer Me 1988: Crap, definitely Choi Taek.

4. Signal: Okay, let’s be honest, Lee Jae-han has his own list.

5. My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: But… then what about meat-loving Mi-ho?

6. Oh My Ghostess: Kang Chef would never stand for this kind of indecisiveness!

7. Coffee Prince: Then again, Han-gyul would totally sympathize.

8. Autumn Fairy Tale: Look, Eun-suh had some real dilemmas, you’re being a baby.

9. My Girl: I know, let’s just drink away the confusion like Yoo-rin.

10. Queen Seon-deok: I meant to say, Mishil is the greatest ever… *gulp*

Laica

My favorite dramas have the kind of writing and acting that bring characters to life, so their journeys feel like my own. These shows follow their characters as they grow into their true selves, or fall in love with their perfect other halves—or both—and live on in my imagination to this day.

1. Misaeng: Has there ever been a more insightful, heartbreaking, glorious exploration of the human condition?

2. Signal: It felt like I didn’t breathe for sixteen episodes, and when it was over I wanted to do it again.

3. Coffee Prince: You never forget your first (drama) love—especially if his name is Choi Han-kyul.

4. City Hall: An intelligent, realistic love story between adults that’s also swooningly romantic.

5. Scandal: A Shocking and Wrongful Incident: A brilliant hybrid of revenge thriller and family melodrama.

6. Can You Hear My Heart: This family shattered my heart and put it together again, bursting with even more love.

7. Alone in Love: The various ways people love each other, and how to mend a broken heart.

8. Que Sera, Sera: A twisted, emotional love story that felt almost too real and vulnerable.

9. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Best coming-of-age music drama ever. Ever.

10. Tamra the Island: Park Kyu’s epic transformation is forever engraved on my heart.

TeriYaki

Secondary relationships are what make a drama particularly memorable in my book, adding extra layers that give me much to appreciate long after the drama concludes. Great performances from a talented cast are a given, but it’s those special connections that give my favorites a significant edge.

1. You From Another Star: Funny and heartwarming.

2. Pinocchio: The dads hold a special place in my heart.

3. High School King of Savvy: A grandpa and his loving grandson.

4. Answer Me 1988: The veteran actors who played the parents.

5. Page Turner: Short but sweet!

6. I Remember You: Bittersweet bromance.

7. You’re Beautiful: So much angst!

8. Dear My Friends: Deeply talented cast.

9. Sassy Go Go: The sweetest triangle.

10. Scent of a Woman: Love this mother and daughter.

These top 10 lists are collectors items indeed. Thanks to the DB crew!

I started kdrama watching in 2005, became a DB reader in 2007, and my list does show this historical root.

In no particular order, here are my top 10:
*. My Name is Kim Sam Soon - the one that started it all which managed to wipe off my ill perception of things kdrama. Refreshingly with a strong kickass female in KSS.
* Coffee Prince - the one that connected me to DB to read JB's recap
* City Hall - easily my all time favorite that remains to me up to this date the most romantic and mature tale with unforgettable chemistry between Kim Sun Ah and Cha Seung Won. The one drama based on which I believe Kim Eun Sook can deliver her good.
* Misaeng - simply sublime and Lee Sung Min!
* Signal - this and Misang have shown to the world how much kdrama have travelled, and we are part of the witnesses on this growth journey
* Jealousy Incarnate - THE romcom to top all romcoms and Jo Jung Suk proves himself the romcom king of his generation
* Reply 1988 - the Reply that speaks to my heart about the family and community spirit of era past
* I Live in Cheongdamdong - sadly not a lot of people seem to have seen this sitcom gem (due in no small part to the Eng sub availability). It makes you laugh and cry like nobody's business, full of heart and soul. Noteworthy its PD and writers went on to direct/write more gems in My Wife will have an Affair, Awl, Oh Hae Young Again and the Let's Eat series.
* All about Eve - nostalgic favorite and guilty pleasure at its best
* Hotelier - ditto ABE. The elevator kiss between Bae Yong Jun and Song Yoon Ah is as dreamy and hot as those rare ones you can find well over a decade later.

special mention goes to these four of what I consider as art house great:
* Alone in Love
* Heard it through the Grapevine
* Yoona's Street
* End of the World

Finally...after scrolling thru so many lists looking for that rapport with another person, I have found ~70-80% similarity between your list and what mine might look like!!

I LOVE so many shows on your list. We have similar tastes.

Oh how I wish more people watched I Live in Cheongdamdong. Not that I can blame them, what with the lack of subs and the sheer number of episodes. It's nice that a few of the episodes are available on viki now. I've also been following the PD and writers through all their respective shows and it hasn't been a surprise to me that they've done so well for themselves.

And someone else who thinks Jealousy Incarnate is the rom-com to beat! It's flawed, but no one has made me laugh more than Jo Jung-seok in that show. This is also the first kdrama that genuinely impressed my brother with its humor (after years of writing all of them off).

Thanks, Chandler!

On Jealousy Incarnate, I really enjoy your comments (and so many others') at the recap thread. It is actually an anti-romcom mocking the romcom troupes bringing us back to the real life choices each of us have to deal with be it romance, career, friendship or family. It is a classics that will stand the test of time for its wit and intellect, to be appreciated as you grow older and wiser.

Yes, ILICDD is clearly a product of heart and soul from its amazing team and hard to find another drama like it.

I enjoyed all the top tens!

I'm not sure I have top ten favorites, more like a top five or so? Shin Don the drama for me, but I also have insane love for Sangdo, A Wife's Credentials, The End of the World, Sandglass and Resurrection. The obsessive love I had for Jung Do Jeon over the summer hasn't faded, so it's up there right now too (doesn't help that I haven't finished or really watched anything since). And pretty much anything Jung Ha-yeon has ever written (that I can get my hands on) has been up there at some point and probably will be again.

There are a whole bunch of masterpieces that I really, really like and are absolutely in my top ten when I'm not playing favorites, but don't necessarily invoke that same crazy feeling. For example Eyes of Dawn is certainly in the debate for best drama of all time, and I was in awe practically every minute of it, but its tragedy never became ecstatic for me, like it did in, say, Shin Don. Another example would be Conspiracy in the Court.

Wow all these dramas in the list made me reminiscing my favourite scenes!
My top 10 would probaly be
1) Gaksital (still one of my top 3 dramas. The action, the love is so perfect. And must I say, Joo Won. That drama made me became a fan of him)
2) Signal (I love crime themed dramas and this is definitely a perfection. All the actors nailed their roles perfectly and I lowkey hoping for a season 2. I wanna know what will happen to Det Lee.)
3)I Remember You (one word. BROMANCE. The love that Hyun has for his brother made me cry. Seriously)
4) Reply 1988 (watched this after I Remember You because of Bogummy and didn't regret it at all. I love the family love and friendships portrayed in the drama)
5) W (I love manga and manhwa so imagining the characters coming into real life? A dream come true. Although the plot getting twisted over time and I'm honestly not satisfied with the ending, I really enjoy the emotional roller coaster ride)
6) Master's Sun (ohhhhh watched this with my mom while it was still airing and I still rewatching it from time to time. Just love the plot and So Jisub's chemistry with Gong Hyojin is so good)
7) Moonlight Drawn By Clouds (again, watched this for Bogummy hahaha but I like the conflict in the palace. Although yoonsung at the end though )
8) Kill Me Heal Me (Auditory Hallucinations is still my favourite ost ever. And Ji sung's acting is so damn good)
9) Goblin (I mainly stayed for the Grim Reaper and Goryeo plot tbh but I enjoy every episode. Although the ending made me feel sad for Shin)
10) Coffee Prince (this one is a classic. I watched it when it was still airing, I think I was 11 or 12 at that time? But loved the story. And gong yoo)

Anyway, I discovered your site because of Gaksital! And it was 5 years ago wow time flies real fast and I really love reading your recaps because it's so detailed and simple. Thank you Dramabeans and keep up the great work!

I'm a newbie to the dramaverse, so I'll be adding a lot to my 'to watch' list. These are mine so far:

1. Signal - I could not stop watching! When do we get season 2?
2. Oh My Ghostess - The second drama I watched, the one that got me hooked.
3. 1% Of Something - The squee was high with this one.
4. Coffee Prince - My love affair with Gong Yoo begins
5. Goblin - and grows!
6. Pasta - I know all of the flaws, I KNOW! I just don't care.
7. Oh My Venus - The hero is for real swoony.
8. School 2013 - Bromance!
9. Master's Sun - skinship, yes please!
10. Jealousy Incarnate - The chemistry was amazing!

I'm sure this will change and grow as I watch more.

Well, since everybody is doing it... ;)
Confession, I've only been watching KDramas for about 7 months, so I don't have quite the plethora to choose from as some, but I've watched enough to share the ones I've come to love.

My Top "6" Dramas

1. "Pinocchio"
This was the third for fourth drama I watched, but it ended it all for me. This one HOOKED me forever with it's perfection. The characters, the plot, the conflict, but more than anything the message of hope amidst pain and the importance of living a life of integrity. GOLD MEDAL all the way. (Plus, Lee Jong-Suk & Park Shin-Hye <3 )

2. "School 2013"
Sure, it has the bromance to end all bromances. Really though, this one struck me on a deeply personal level. As a high school English teacher, it understood me, comforted me, and challenged me to be a better teacher.

3. "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo"
It was pure, real, and full of so much youthful strength and joy. Not to mention Joon-Hyung is boyfriend GOALS.

4. "I Hear Your Voice"
Fantastic characters that felt so REAL... a unique and beautiful love story spanning years... universal and timeless themes of honesty, love, sacrifice, forgiveness, and rising above your tragedies. (P.S. What's a noona romance?... I'm sold!)

5. "Moonlight Drawn By Clouds"
One of the staff members mentioned the "puppy love" which is happy, but I honestly fell head over heels for the unbelievably handsome, divided, yet loyal bodyguard - Byung-Yeon (Kwak Dong Yeon). Another one with a powerful message about love and leadership.

6. "W -Two Worlds"
It just felt so clever as I was watching. Again, Lee Jong-Suk (yes, I'm suddenly seeing the pattern, too) is brilliant. A compelling story full of romance, mystery, fantasy and thriller qualities, the show boasts compelling, memorable characters with a unique twist.

I see several of my favourites on these lists yay! Mostly my interests seem to align with LollyPip's and tineybeanie...

My criteria is simply those that made me feel for characters and want to watch again:

1) Jumong: first drama, first love, Hae Mo Sul forever.
2) School 2013: as a teacher in my past life, this felt so real. I always liked my bad boys the best.
3) Gaksitaaaal: Shunji, I still bleed for you.
4) Faith: watched it like 3 times.
5) Rooftop Prince: I had serious withdrawal.
6) You're Beautiful: inspired my username, 'nuff said.
7) Healer: there will never be a show like this, my eternal love
8) Misaeng: quietly stole my heart.
9) Queen Seon Duk: tough girls. The best Hwarang.
10) Secret Garden: my guilty pleasure.

I would include more sageuks (Chuno, Princess Man), but the Chinese drama Nirvana in Fire has spoiled me for life.

I'm going with ones I've either entirely re-watched or watched certain episodes, since Korean TV kindly has new dramas almost every 6-8 weeks, they must have hit a cord with me.
1. Coffee Prince-1st K-drama, must be something in that 1st love thingy.
2. Harvest Villa
3. Bad Guys
4. Dal Ja's Spring
5. Emergency Couple
6. Bad Couple
7. School 2013
8. Ho gu's Love
Some I think I will re-watch in the future are This Week My Wife will have an Affair, maybe Misaeng, though I remember thinking that the 1st 4 episodes were amazing, and then the rest were very good, but I couldn't quite connect as well with them.

Number one on my list is The City Hall. It was one of my first and remains my all-time favourite. No other drama has even come close.

The rest, which I have all watched more than once and in no particular order:

Time Between Dog and Wolf - Lee Jun-ki at his best. He's strong, physically imposing and showcases his acting skills perfectly. When he becomes the Thai thug Key, he makes the character real with just a few subtle changes.

Kid Gang - A very broad, rude and extremely funny gangster comedy from OCN. I watched it once, laughed out loud all the way through then watched it again and laughed even harder.

Yaksha - My favourite sageuk. It moves right along with no dead weight at 12 episodes because it's from OCN. It's bloody, violent but has a lot of heart and doesn't get bogged down in the political stuff.

Reset - The best OCN police procedural, in my opinion, with a villain so utterly villainous that I didn't know whether to be appalled by him or to regard him as light comedy relief.

Padam Padam - A real emotional roller coaster of a drama. While watching I often found myself with tears rolling down my face and I am not an easy crier if I think my emotional chain is being yanked for cheap sentiment. It's one of the best depictions of a dysfunctional mother/son and father/daughter dynamic I have ever seen.

Ruler of Your Own World - Pretty sure this is my oldest drama, filmed in 2002. It's got the usual tragic drama tropes but it's not hoked up at all. Also it's a really interested look into what S Korea was like at the turn of the millennium just culturally speaking. The characters wear ordinary clothes and look like ordinary people.

Heartless City - A fun watch with compelling characters and one of the most realistic sex scenes in Korea drama-dom. Plus Lee Jae-yoon, that Korean-Canadian hottie. He is seriously miscast but whatever.

Bad Family - Heartwarming is a positive for me here as usually if something is described to me as being heartwarming, I avoid it like the plague. I actually hate heartwarming as a general rule but sometimes it's very well done.

Signal - What can I say that others have not already said? Just watch it if you haven't and you'll get what a large number of us here on DB mean.

A very subjective list for everyone, so hard to discuss or to criticize..

Anyway, I'm very happy that Misaeng and Signal were so often mentioned and often together. Those drama are the only ones that i would qualify as real and absolute must watch.

I'm also very happy that Story of a Man hasn't been completely forgotten. It's a very old (2009) show by k-dramaland's standards but worth every minute of the time spent on it and that's why it's dramatic that so few people still think of adding it on best drama lists or recommendation lists.

It was beautifully directed with a cinematography that could compare to the best films. And had also superb acting and very tight writing: the writer knew exactly what the true nature of the show was and where it was going from the first to the last frame.

Everyone is raving about the hero (Kim Shin) and the villain (Chae Do Woo) conflict but for me it was all about Do Woo's relationship with his sister (Eun Soo).
The fascinating and powerful connection between the siblings is what makes me come back to the show so often.

Each rewatch makes me feel like i could write an essay about the nuances, subtility, and the ambiguities of their very complex relationship without exhausting the subject.

The intensity of their feelings for each other (on Eun Soo's side: unfailing loyalty mixed with consuming guilt for her brother's actions, on Do Woo's side: wild possessiveness and a obssessive, burning desire of fusion with her), the striking opposition and complementarity of their personalities made their bond really special and unique to me.
I couldn't get enough of watching them being irresistibly attract to each other while failing to reach each other or to fulfill the other's need.

The kind of characters who got under your skin and keep haunting you long after the end, especially THIS END.

Also big thanks to the recapper who mentionned Resurrection: this one was also worth a book but this is message long enough...

Story of a Man makes me want to write essays too. :) In fact, I probably have written some things about that drama that veer into essay territory. Eun Soo is one of my favorite drama characters ever, and I totally get your fascination with Eun Soo-Do Woo.

I loved reading your insights on this show and the recently started TWY on the Currently Watching page. I'll be looking out for your comments and recommendations in the future.

I'm about to start my rewatch of Story of a Man right now actually. Love how you described the relationship between brother and sister. It really was fascinating how the show went about examining how they loved each other and the effect of their choices on the other. I honestly loved Eun Soo's relationship with almost everyone in the series. She had a very connective sort of quality and it was her caring for all the characters involved that brought such a compelling aspect to the show, partially because of her brother's intense longing to keep her by his side.

Now, I'm definitely planning on moving Resurrection up on my Plan to Watch list.

I've been following this site for quite some time (a year or two). But never have I left any comments which is mostly because I watch dramas that have finished already. BUT..........My love for SoaM totally makes me want to rave about it ENDLESSLY...
Well, to quote another fellow commenter (nom kitteh, I think) : This drama is soooooo good that I want to marry it & have babies with it ?
I totally second your thoughts about wanting to write essays about the ironies in this show, the subtle touches to Do-woo's character as the creepy villain & Kim Kang Woo's portrayal, the relationship dynamic between Eun Soo & Do Woo, the directing, the writing and the list never ends ?
On a side note, no drama or movie ever made me want to check out an actor's past works or future projects........This drama totally did that for me. I loved Kim Kang Woo's acting style so much that I was baffled when I learned that he's hardly a well-known actor (man has got seriously uber-sexy looks except when he has facial hair, I think). Also, I FAIL to understand why it had such low ratings, so few people who appreciate this masterpiece or even have heard of it. At least I expected the awards to do justice but....(SIGH). I was really disappointed that this drama received JUST one award. Kim Kang Woo really deserved one for his nuanced acting.
? I don't know if you are going to actually read this but I have no one to talk to about this masterpiece of a drama. I thought of leaving comments on the recap page but nobody would've read them.........my heart feels lighter now ☺, I have been trying to get over this drama since the past three months

3. Coffee prince: Choi han kyul is the epitome of my dream partner. Or it could just be gong yoo
4. Princesses' man: while I could never watch this drama ever again the same way(because of PSH), but it doesn't change the fact that it's a beautifully written and excellently acted drama.
5. Masters sun: definitely a flawed drama with not much plot but man the chemistry! best on screen chemistry ever! Love the skinships in this drama ♥️♥️♥️
6. Scent of a women: live every day to the fullest while still thinking ahead about tomorrow instead of living today as if it were the last.
7. Reply 1988: I would move to ssangmundong neighborhood right this second if it existed.(obviously, all the characters need to be there too. They're the reason why I'd want to live there)
8. Ojjakgyo brothers: favourite 58(60 to be exact) episodes drama
9. Goblin: It's been more than 3 weeks and I'm still in withdrawal period. So it must mean that I'm greatly affected by this drama.

As someone here mentioned, I also like the strong emotional dramas, ones that reach into my soul and shake up my emotions, that stop my breath and put me on edge dark, psychological and thrilling.
This is my top 10:

1 White Christmas - It made me fall in love with dark psychological dramas, makes me wish they make more K-dramas like this.
2 Signal - completely loved the interaction between past and present, the detective warmed my heart, and his question 'Does nothing in the future change? Does people with power and money still get away from justice?'
3 Punch - put me on the edge every second, waiting with bathed breath what will happen next.
4 Missing Noir M - Loved every case and twist... brilliant!
5 Misaeng - Grabbed me with how it explored realisticly normal persons life, and oh my the emotions with it...
6 Kill Me, Heal Me - Ji Sung is truly outstanding! The drama perfectly balanced dark theme subject with humour.
7 Reply 1988 - Made me really nostalgic.. the feels throughout the whole drama
8 Innocent Man - The story was thrilling and strong, Song Joong Ki and Moon Chae Won were great.
9 God's Gift - 14 Days - The twists were amazing, put me on edge with every episode.
10 Solomon's Perjury - Loved it.. it explored so many subjects, from teen to adult, corruption to friendship... loved the ending voice over about life. It made me cry!

1. Coffee Prince- I loved its treatment of sexual orientation, and Gong Yoo's love that defied society's expectations.
2. Secret Garden- How is this not on more people's lists? Excellent cast, some of the funniest moments I've ever seen in a drama, and some of the most tragic moments...
3.. My Love From Another Star (You came from the Stars)- I was hooked from the very beginning. I love sassy heroines. Who says that only the male lead gets to be a lovable and yet spoiled diva?
4. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Ju- This drama's simple little story ended up being more original and fresh than all of the much hyped dramas airing in the same time-slot. I don't think we've seen this natural of a relationship in all of the dramasphere.
5. Signal- it was well done and gripping. The only cop drama I've ever fallen in love with. And a badass heroine..
6. Boys Before Flowers- this fairy-tale started the madness, and therefore holds a special place in my heart
7. Jealousy Incarnate- I loooove the male actor. I love story-lines with jealous male leads who realize they made a grave mistake in snapping up an awesome girl. .
8. You're beautiful- Dramas where the female character has to pretend to be a guy are the best.

My favorites are chosen because they are dramas that, no matter how many years have passed, I still look back on and say they touched me and affected me. There are scenes and moments I remember with clarity. These dramas are impossible for me to forget. They list is a mix of Korean, Chinese, and Taiwanese dramas.

1. The Fierce Wife
2. The Legend of Zhen Huan
3. White Christmas
4. Nobuta wo Produce
5. Scarlet Heart, the original c-drama
6. Still, Marry Me
7. Mask (While it's premise and story may be nothing groundbreaking, the way the romance progressed in this actually really touched me. It's slow, they don't particularly like each right away, but eventually become each other's most stalwart support system.)

1) Coffee Prince - with the crowd on this one
2) Life is Beautiful - 63 episodes long... But I truly loved the family relationships in this drama (esp. between mom/mom-in-law)
3) It's Okay, It's Love - Really liked the overall theme
4) Signal - Had me on the edge of my seat all the way; desperately wanted Mr. Stubbornly Upright Cop to make it somehow, anyhow, even if it did seem impossible.
5) Misaeng - Growing up is hard.
6) Personal Taste - So many laughs in this one. Loved the Museum Ahjussi so much.
7) Tree with Deep Roots - Learned a lot from this one.
8) Royal Family - I can't quite explain why this drama was so addictive for me. Maybe it's because it was my first drama with Ji Sung...
9) Coffee House - Different perspective from usual; loved the crazy characters and the music.
10) Secret Garden - The drama that started it all...

They may not be the best in terms of quality but they were the ones that left a hole in my heart after they ended.

Lists! Fun, but hard. Here's my take:

1. Six Flying Dragons - timely look at the causes and costs of revolution, plus kick-ass fight scenes and powerful payoffs - smart, haunting and engaged

2. The Devil - simultaneously dark and beautiful - an expert revenge thriller that transcends the genre to explore the nature of evil and the possibility of grace

3. Queen Seondeok - yes, the last 12 episodes are rough, but how often do you get both a strong female protagonist and a strong female antagonist? Plus, Bidam

4. Tree with Deep Roots - also falters a bit at the end, but so smart and engaged until then. Episode 19 is brilliant.

5. Jumong - Epic awesomeness - spins its wheels a bit in the last third but mostly big budget old-fashioned storytelling at its best.

6. Mixed Up Investigation Agency - the first few episodes are rough, but evolves into a quirky, moving mediation on friendship and loss. Tightly plotted and completely original.

7. Liar Game - So, so much fun. Smart and sharp, with a fantastic cast. I want season two now!

8. Giant - Best ensemble cast ever, brimming with complex characters. Get through the melodramatic initial episodes and then enjoy the ride.

9. Painter of the Wind - Gorgeous directing and the best final shot ever. Park Shin Yang overacts, but it's not his story - Moon Geun-young is fabulous.

10. Coffee Prince - I'm not usually a rom com person, but this one is a funny, touching, sexy delight

Well, I think I'll go with My 10 FAVORITE-or-FIRST-something Dramas that have special places in my heart and memories...since listing my favorite Top 10 dramas will be impossible! Hihihi :P

1) Hana Yori Dango (No, not Boys Over Flowers because I honestly detest the Korean remake...no offense to those who loved it) - MY FAVORITE DRAMA OF ALL TIME <3 and the first drama I rewatched (and rewatched, an rewatched, and rewatched...and you know the rest) because HanaDan is just My Favorite which is HanaDan
>Really-Good-Dramas-I-Also-Rewatch-But-Still-Can't-Beat-HanaDan-And-Also-Impossible-To-Rank
>Okay-Dramas-That-I-Don't-Mind-Rewatching-But-Not-Worth-Ranking-Because-The-Previous-Ranking-Is-Probably-Around-10-Dramas-Already
>Dramas-That-Are-Acceptable-But-Watchable-Only-Once-Or-Twice
>Dramas-That-Should-Not-Be-Named-And-Should-Be-Erased-From-History

2) HanaKimi (Also NOT the Korean remake because that, too, was UGH...again no offense to those who loved it) - Favorite cross-dressing drama ever. Plus so many eye candy! Not to mention the "villain" girl was so funny. I hate when 2nd female leads try to sabotage the first female lead and succeeds, but here, her tricks HAHAHAHAHAHA...ended up helping the main couple be together OH EM. Excuse me while I rewatch this now.

3) I Remember You - First drama I skipped the kiss. Honestly, if they kept the romance to a minimum - flirtations, awkward closeness, accidental skinship - this drama would be perfect and might have been a tie with HanaDan as my favorite drama...but no, they just had to kiss and all. Don't get me wrong, I love me some romance, but only when the story works better with it. I usually replay kissing scenes (hehehe), but for IRY, I skipped it after I read the recap.

4) Spring Waltz - First drama that made me download its OST. ~One love... I love you so... Love is a beautiful word...~ OH THAT SONG!!! Plus the piano piece he composed <3

5) You're Beautiful - First drama that convinced me to buy a product. Samsung Corby Pink! I wanted to collect all four colors! It was also the first drama I attempted to watch via live streaming.

6) My Girl - First drama ever! I love the setup of pretending-to-be-family-but-in-love-with-each-other. Oh the dilemma!!!

7) Tree of Heaven - First drama that made me cry. Plus, I love Japan! And those days when PSH was still so innocent...and where is Lee Wan now?

8) Moon that Embraces the Sun - Favorite sageuk drama. Probably because of the child actors and Kim Soo-hyun.

9) Cinderella Unni - Favorite OST. Oh, Ye-sung and your beautiful voice. The only Korean song I memorize.

10) Splish Splash Love - Favorite time travel drama. YDJ and KSG need to make full-length drama together!

I have other criteria, but I'm doing my best to follow the Top 10 format :P

I love Hana Yori Dango! My first drama I ever watched was Boys Over Flowers. After seeing the Japanese version, the Korean version dropped for me.

I've never commented before but I can't resist this top 10 list. I love reading everyone's favourites. I find it interesting that some of dramas with the biggest hype (ahem ahem DOTS) aren't mentioned as much as others.

1. Signal - perfection
2. Gaksital - I never understood when people said they had difficulties moving on from a drama until I watched Gaksital.
3. Master of Study
4. Liar Game
5. Misaeng
6. Let's Eat - I must have gained 5 pounds watching this
7. Reply 1988 (all the replys really)
8. Page Turner - only 3 episodes but I really enjoyed it
9. Hidden Identity
10. Squad 38
Honorable mention: My too perfect sons - an older one from 2009. One of those family dramas with 50 episodes. It was my first drama and it introduced me to Cho Jin Woong, Ji Chang Wook and Son Hyun Joo - I really got hooked on dramas after this.
After reading everyone's lists I'm adding Weightlifting Fairy, Shut up flower boy band, Punch and White Christmas to my watch list!

2. 뿌리 깊은 나무 - i'd probably cry in front of King Sejong's statue in May.

3. 대장금 - have to watch this show at least twice a year

4. 프라하의 연인 - one of the few Kim Eun Sook's drama that I like. Can't fathom that Heirs is from the same writer

5. 미스코리아 - the road to the crown isn't easy

6. 나인 아홉번의 시간여행 - gold standard of time travel drama

8. 가을동화 the drama that started my Kdrama frenzy

9. 환상의 커플 - loved Anna Jo ♡♡♡

I judge my favorite dramas of all-time based on how much I've grown attached to them and the fondness I feel when I think back. Therefore, it is not about objective assessment of drama quality that I look for. It's the connection with the drama. When a drama ends and I still end up thinking and dreaming about the story and/or the characters, then it means the drama is special to me. Re-watch value is another indication of a how much I truly love a drama. If I go back and still have that stupid smile on my face or the warm and fuzzy feels or the awe for the scenes no matter how many times I have re-watched a drama, then it's for keeps for me.

That being said, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bokjoo currently sits at the top of my favorite list. It's just utterly cute, sweet, refreshing, relatable... just absolutely wonderful story-telling of a simple story about growing up, friendship, love family, and life in general! That warm and fuzzy feeling will never go away. SUWEGGGG!!

Others in no particular order are Coffee Prince, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Goblin, Reply 1988, Pinocchio, and City Hunter. These are some of the dramas that easily come to mind when one is to ask me about the dramas I like.

I look forward to more dramas that will add to my list. :)

I primarily did this for myself, but it took so long I figured I’d share it for any interested souls. Reading the comments, you can definitely see a few trends for top 10 dramas. Well, I’ve been curious about DB readers’ tastes for a while, so I figured I’d go a little overboard and count up all the top players for top 10 dramas. I’m sure there will be more comments after this, but I don’t think the leads will be changing anytime soon. So here’s a list of what DB readers and writers put on their top 10 lists. I only took those in English, and if there was double for any line I didn’t count that line (only top 10 or less). I also paired them up with their DB ratings, for further analysis fun. JB in [], GF in {}

Top Ten
1. Coffee Prince: 57 (8 DB, 49 Other) [9/9] {10/10}
2. Signal: 49 (7 DB, 42 Other) [10/10]
3. Misaeng: 45 (6 DB, 39 Other) [9/9] {10/10}
4. Healer: 44 (5 DB, 39 Other [10/10] {9/9}
5. Answer Me 1997: 42 (4 DB, 38 Other) [9/9] {10/10}
6. Answer Me 1988: 36 (5 DB, 31 Other) {9/9}
7. I Hear Your Voice: 35 (6 DB, 29 Other) [7/ 8] {9/9}
8. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo: 34 (3 DB, 21 Other) [9/9]
9. My Love From Another Star: 29 (4 DB, 25 Other) [{9/9}]
10. My Name is Kim Sam Soon: 29 (3 DB, 26 Other) [9/9] {10/10}

20s Club
Master’s Sun 28 [9/8] {8/8}
School 2013: 25 [8/8] {9/8}
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho: 23 [9/8] {10/10}
The Lonely Shining Goblin 23 - -
Full House: 22 [7/6]
I Remember You 22 [{8/8}]
Queen In-Hyun’s Man: 22 [9/9] {8/8}
Pinocchio 20 {8/7}
City Hunter 20 [10/9] {10/10}**

15+ (alpha) Club
Gaksital 19 [9/9] {10/9}
Greatest Love 17 [9/9] {9/8}**
W: Two Worlds 17 [8/8]
Shut Up: Flower Boy Band 17 [10/10] {9/9}
Liar Game 17 [9/9] … and a lot of hearts from GF
Six Flying Dragons 17 - -
King 2 Hearts 15 {9/9}
Princess’ Man 15 [10/9]
Sungkyunkwan Scandal 15 [{9/8}]
Goong 15-22? [7/7] {8/8}**

It gave some interesting results--I never would’ve expected Coffee Prince to consistently break 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 before any others. Or even be first. The next 5 I could see, but I Hear Your Voice was a surprise. Weightlifting Fairy was the real Dark Horse for me in the top 10, while Goblin and Master’s Sun surprised me in the 20s club (Goblin for being there and Master’s Sun for almost making top 10). The ** are of interest because they got there by Beanie lists alone, none of the DB writers have them on one of their top 10 Lists. Goong is an interesting case because I didn’t realize there were two titles, or two dramas to refer to, until the end.

While drama watching is still a subjective art form, I do take cues and recommendations from well rated dramas, and I thought this might help me narrow down the contenders to add to my list (that, and looking for lists like mine). Thanks DB, I had fun!

Other findings of interest: all of Lee Jong Suk’s starring dramas except Doctor Stranger got over 15 votes. 2 of Jung Yoon Jung’s 3 completed dramas all made it above 10 votes (they’re also the writer for highly anticipated Bride of the Water God). Six Flying Dragons is the only true Saeguk to make the 15+ cut, or even the 10+ cut. Of the 29 dramas that made any sort of cut, I’d classify 8 as fantasy, 6 as crime-action, 3 as classics (10 years or older), 6 as slice of life, and 10 as romcoms. Of course, some counted in two categories. 5/29 were the “best drama of the year” in Year End Reviews, and many other notable dramas were mentioned in the reviews.

Whoa, Cozybooks! Truly impressive! Thank you for giving us this great gift, I can't tear myself away from your analysis.

It's lovely to know that others love the shows I love. On the flip side, seeing many Beanie favorites not make your compilation (or come in low) helps me feel better (less mean) about entries that made me yell "WHAT???"

... and that's a WFKBJ "WHAT????"

Lord, I knew I was in the minority, but I guess this cements it...none of that top 10 is in my top 10 (which I didn't post, so maybe it's my own fault haha). Certainly agree that Signal is one of the best, but somehow not anywhere near my favorites. I have to go down to the 15+ section to find the only one that agrees with anything in my top 10 (it's my #1, so at least it's there?)

Conclusion: I don't know why I'm here :P

Anyway, very interesting! Thanks for putting it together. I wonder if results would change if there was weighting involved. Not going to try it to find out, but I wonder. :)

@no name#6

Don't you worry.. Signal has the same effect on me. I agree that the drama is wonderfully carried out, but it's just too scary for my taste. So it is nowhere near my list.

However, I do agree that Misaeng, Healer, IHYV left some strong impression on me. WFKBJ is a nice, refreshing drama, but because of its light nature, it is not in my list too.

Likes and dislikes are truly subjective so don't worry lol.

Haha, yay! I'm not the only curious nutjob out here! I've also been going through everyone's top ten lists and doing something similar, keeping a spreadsheet and marking where each drama ranked on people's lists, and giving each drama points based on that. I'm also curious what the outcome of this "survey" will be. I still have about 30-40 comments to go, and then I want to compile to results into some fun charts, but it's nice to see I'm not the only one who likes statistics and such.

I'm not personally surprised by Coffee Prince (it's #1 on my list) or Signal (it's gotten a lot of beanie love this year, for good reason), but I have been really surprised to see multiple mentions of some dramas I hadn't even heard of before, like Mixed-up Inventigative Agency (aka Evasive Inquiry Agency, aka Four Gold Chasers) and Tree with Deep Roots.

I definitely only included dramas in my list that I have rewatched at least once, and...dramas I watched more times naturally edged closer to the top. Since this is hard enough as it is, I only included Korean dramas..

1. Oh Hae Young Again
2. Answer Me 1997
3. Hotelier
4. Autumn in My Heart
5. All About Eve
6. Secret Love Affair
7. Joseon X-Files
8. Signal
9. Misaeng
10. My Name Is Kim Sam Soon

Looking at my list, I see that I most enjoy watching different types of characters handle desire and yearning... Sometimes it's the wavering, indecisive leads that frustrate and keep me hooked (e.g., MNIKSS and OHYA's Do-Kyung.). But more often I get addicted to the gut-wrenching droughts of abstinence and self-restraint that some leads go through before they surrender and give their all to whatever it is that drives them. This inevitably includes (heavier) romances, but a Joseon detective's need to find answers, an office worker's struggle for acceptance, a policeman's drive to find the killer--these are the kinds of stories that are so moving to me.

I also love it to bits when a lead "just knows" what he/she wants, and gives full-out confident chase, (e.g., Hotelier, OHYA's Hae Young, AAE).

@Herfyjo,

Yay! Another fan of VINEYARD MAN! I watched it in late summer around the time MOON LOVERS premiered, and loved it to pieces. Oh Man-seok was great, especially while singing "Chinggis Khan" (which gave me flashbacks to Boney M's "Rasputin"). The locations out in the boondocks were lovely.

Earlier I'd watched HYENA -- one of the more risque Kdramas I've seen -- for Shin Sung-rok's excellent character and subplot, and stumbled across OMS in the process. It was wild and crazy, and pretty raunchy. A memorable romp.
