Busking with the boyfriend’s father in The Liar and His Lover

The new trailer for tvN’s adaptation of the popular Japanese manga The Liar and His Lover delves a little bit more into our characters’ backgrounds. The upcoming youth drama will capture the first love story between Lee Hyun-woo (Moorim School), whose character is a prodigy music composer, and Red Velvet’s Joy who plays a high school band singer. It’s love at first sight for her, but for him, it’s completely different. He’s enthralled by the sound of her raw, powerful voice, but whether he’s also fallen for the girl is a question we’ll have to watch the drama to answer.

In the latest teaser, we see the first meeting between him and his “Vitamin Voice” girl when she passes by on her bicycle near the Han River, and inside, she thinks: “What should I do? I think I’ve fallen for someone!” Then the scene cuts to a large stadium filled to the brim with enthusiastic fans and a bright stage featuring an idol band.

A voiceover that describes Lee Hyun-woo as a considerate producer is suddenly interrupted by an enraged artist who starts hurling insults at him during a recording session. Lee Hyun-woo tells the singer that if he can’t handle the music, he should just get out. So I guess… not so considerate after all? But there seems to be a reason behind his perfectionism: his Bohemian father, played by Choi Min-soo (Jackpot). Lee Hyun-woo shouts that he doesn’t want his music to be taken away from him as easily as it was taken from his father.

However, the recently released still cuts show that perhaps keeping his creative property may be harder than he may expect, because Lee Hyun-woo and his boss, played by Lee Jung-jin (The K2), are having a staring showdown with half-smiles and half-smirks that seem colder than a block of ice. Lee Jung-jin’s character is the CEO of SOLE Music N, an entertainment company with a discerning eye when it comes to talent, and Lee Hyun-woo is his star producer.

The trailer goes on to reveal that not all relationships in the drama are as complicated as Lee Hyun-woo’s, because Joy seems to have a very simple, straightforward loving bond with her classmates and her grandmother who sings with her in times of happiness. When our two leads first make their introductions to each other, Lee Hyun-woo lies that he’s not a producer, but just a musician-wannabe.

Maybe more lies down the line cause trouble, because moments later, we see Joy crying in public while Choi Min-soo comforts her, telling her that the guy isn’t worth it if he makes her wait. They seem to have an established connection from their time busking on the streets together. At the end of the trailer, she’s back to her cheerful self when Lee Hyun-woo meets her at the Han River, saying that he’s finally realized why he wanted to see her again.

The Liar and His Lover will air Monday-Tuesday starting March 20 on tvN.

I am keeping my hopes low because tvn dramas have been disappointing me lately. But this looks good and I always find romance with slice of life thingy seasoned with good music endearing and alluring. I don't know much about joy but have heard good things about her, so keeping fingers crossed!

wouldn't it be funny that while all of us here are worrying about the acting and whatnot, the music ends up being the most problematic and unbelievable part of the drama?

You can't have a musical drama and bad songs. Come on tvN, give me good music.

this is giving me Dream High vibes.

Hell, if that similarity will make Joy and Lee Hyun Woo's future emulate Suzy and Kim Soo Hyun's career, I'll take it.

I have been shouting "When will Lee Hyun Woo?" since forever. It's about time.

Is Monstar considered to be under tvN or purely MNET production? Coz that youth drama had really great songs.

I can't help remembering the darker tone the original character from the jdrama pulled off. The lead in the korean version looks way too ecstatic :S.

the manga was less dark than the movie... still talked about darker stuff but the vibe is different from the film. More high school~ish.

Good job screencaping tineybeanie! I especially love that 3rd pix. Most of the time, I don't get the hype about Joy being "a visual" (she's not my kind of pretty at least), but she looks good there. :)

Anyone know the airtime for this drama? It looks like tvN doesn't have much expectations given that they've casted mostly unknowns kids. I understand Choi Minsoo accepting a role in this, cuz he loves music and stuff, but less about Lee Jungjin. I'll have to check it out the first week, just to see if there's any reason he did. :)

Yes, the movie definitely had a darker tone... which I really enjoyed. It was more brooding, exploring the whole "truths and lies" of his relationship with her.

And I felt the music or rather, the carachters' connection to it.

This drama seems a much lighter version... which might also work.
Like some people here have pointed out, acting and plot aside, the music factor will be crucial.

I'm recalling the music epicness in Monstar. Happy drama watching days ;)

YA!!!

PARK SOO YOUNG!!!

I protest! You're not allowed to be this pretty!!! You're not. ;lsdjf;dslj;

I want to keep my expectations low, but the material released so far is getting me hyped up. What to do....

"I want to keep my expectations low"

Same here. I don't want to be disappointed so I'm keeping it low. tvN is not letting me keep my resolve in peace though. all the materials, bts vids, bts pics and interviews are hyping it up for me. I have to keep reminding myself that she's a newbie so not likely to be good every time I get excited....

I have a feeling even if it's bad, it'd end up being a guilty pleasure crack for me in the end. This is totally my style of cheese.

Forget Lee Hyunwoo, Joy can be my first love. Doesnt matter that I'm a straight girl. I would almost believe I'm in love with her if I didnt know it. Hahahahaha.

Heooool. This looks cute. She looks cute. They look cute together. And the musical numbers look cute (and cringe but who cares... let me go back to high school musical in 2017....)

Please don't let this be horrible. I like everyone involved in this, I would be so sad if this drama was bad.

I'm sensing an Entertainer (kdrama staring Ji-Sung) vibe on it. It's a lot lighter than the original and too cute for my liking. But I may or may not still watch it now I learned that they've included Choi Minsoo. I guess it'll go down now on my list.

Her speaking voice sounds really very good in a melodious chic way. Better than the singing clip from the previous post (Joy fans spare me, just my opinion).
Hearing her voiceover, I'm beginning to believe how he could have fallen for her voice. Speaking voice at least.

Why do I feel like this is targetting only a specific kind of audience... like Cinderella and the Four knights? Or Flower Ramyun. or BOF/HYD. It looks like High School Musical korean version. LMAO. Not necessarily a bad thing if it has heart. But if done badly, it could be mock material for the public. I'm scared... but hopeful.

I agree, it does seem like it is targeted at a very specific audience and all the promo material is tailored in that manner. Nonetheless, at this point I think I'll like Joy more than Park Hye Soo. I still don't know if it's the writing or the actress but I really don't like the female lead for Introverted Boss. Looking forward to some simple story-telling and pretty romance with Liar and his Lover!

I'm hoping casting Joy is like the female leads tvN has casted so far that I've liked: Eunji, Hyeri, Han Groo, Park Boyoung, Kim Seulgi, etc.

(and not the failed cases... )

The problem with Park Hye Soo in IB is obviously the writing and her approach which made her lack of experience becomes more obvious. She was great in Age of Youth and that character was not easy either.

Nice promo in ur name. kkkkkk. I'll make sure to support and watch the MV. About time Sungjae blew up with BTOB.

Back to topic. It's evident the target audience is limited. Musical teen dramas are not for everyone. Ergo Dream High, Monstar, Persevere Ku Haera, Shut up flower boy band...

SUFBB was awesome, though. I think even people who aren't super into those types of shows enjoyed it. It was surprisingly mature and I loved how it used the music within the storyline.

I also loved SUFBB. I even liked Jo Boah in it even when people didn't.

But maybe my standards are low. I finished all the dramas Naomi listed, and found them endearing despite their flaws. I like Sassy go go too. Another school-age drama. My taste is surprising even to me. Given my age (I'm a mother is all I'm going to say. Ha).

I'm looking forward to Choi Min Soo and Lee Jung Jin scene-stealing moments the most. I know they will do well, tho I have a feeling they'll be underutilized like usual. :/

Don't know much about Joy, or think there's much of a chance she'll be good. But she looks natural in the trailer, acting-wise. So either the producers are really good at editing and cherry picking the best seconds or I'll have to eat my words. Love the shot where she's on the bike looking back. Very pretty.

Choi Min Soooo ahjusshi what you are doing in this drama? Lol. I almost forgot he is casted in this drama. It will be great if he is in something epic like Rebel. Anyway, if I end up watching this drama, these two actors will be my reason. Lee Hyun Woo giving too youthful vibes for me.. Joy no comment on her acting, she may surprise us with her acting. She looks cute and innocent, has she always have this big smile?

"Has she always have this big smile?"

Oh boy, you're missing out if you're asking this question... Her smile and super bright personality is her biggest asset by far... time for you to catch up! ^___^

Say your sunbae by 3 weeks. Whooops.

In reality, I didn't know her either 3 weeks ago. Became a fan of Lee Hyun Woo after watching Secretly, Greatly (which I watched because I was a fan of Kim Soo Hyun. ^___^). After checking her out since the news of her casting, I became her fan. I didn't think she was all that when I saw the pictures for the articles. Now, I think she's the most beautiful girl alive. Power of Youtube marathon, I tell you.

Joy is known for her image to be a vitamin with fruit-like smile (netizens' words, not mine).

Her most common nicknames are basically just fruits: green apple, lemon, peach. Also yellow chick. Doongdoong too. To give you an idea of what she's like in netizens' mind.

Well, she's also called joysus and satan joy by i-fans but I'll just ignore that.

Haha these fangirls/ fanboys. Thank you for your reply.

At first I thought it seems like she just smile like that for this drama purpose, because looks weird in my eyes. But based on your answers she definitely smile like that. I am not that interested to know more unless her acting later something that will make me crazy over her. :)

For reference, Joy in real life "acting out innocent" like a kid, vs in trailer. Even more exaggerated appearance in reality than film.

I apologize. I'm not good at searching videos with English captions, I'm more easy with Korean videos but video is easy to understand I believe. :) :)

LHW actually looks like an oppa. Wow. Can't say I wasn't surprised. Looks like his acting might actually pull it off. I was half-expecting him to look to young for her but his smile is an "oppa smile." If you know what I mean.

They surprisingly have some chemistry. I did think the pairing odd at first. But so did I think Joe and Ariel odd-looking but changed my mind watching ISWAK. Who knows... LOL

I have a feeling the person's complaining about LHW's characher are the J-Movie Adaptation fans. This drama is a MANGA ADAPTATION not MOVIE ADAPTATION. His charachter was way more angsty in the movie than he was in the manga anyways. As someone who has seen both versions I see no problem with his casting

I really want to see Lee Hyun-woo in a good good good drama coz he's a good actor. He did so well with his small part in Scholar Who Walks the Night and was hoping he'll get into a another drama soon after that but it took so long.

I hope this is a good drama for him.
