Han Ji-min considers Beware This Woman, Ji Chang-wook confirms

Lee Sung-kyung (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) is officially out of the running for SBS’s new drama Beware This Woman, which is now courting Han Ji-min (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) to star. That puts her potentially opposite Ji Chang-wook (The K2), who has just confirmed that he will be taking the leading man role.

Beware This Woman is touted as a romantic comedy that’s set against a police and legal backdrop, and centers around a woman, Eun Bong-hee, who finds herself the suspect in a murder case. She’s a judicial trainee and former Taekwondo athlete, while the character Ji Chang-wook is up to play, Noh Ji-wook, starts out as a public prosecutor but changes professions to private attorney. The rom-com elements will be balanced against mystery and thrills as Bong-hee and Ji-wook become entangled in a storyline involving an amnesiac killer who targets them both, spurring them to lean on and help each other.

The drama comes from the writer of I Remember You, which was similarly a mix of romantic comedy, killers on the loose, and a police setting. I have to say that when the genre-mixing works well, I really do enjoy it (another show in this category that I enjoyed was Girl Who Sees Smells), and find them more compelling than the straightforward procedurals. As for the actresses, I like both Lee Sung-kyung and Han Ji-min so I’m not sure whether to be disappointed by this news or not. I consider Han Ji-min a safe bet who’ll get the job done, but for me she rarely breaks through to that level of emotional resonance, and while Lee Sung-kyung is the greener actor, she was wonderfully emotive in Weightlifting Fairy. But no use crying over milk that’s already left the casting table, I suppose.

Han Ji-min’s reps have stated that she is currently busy filming the movie Miss Baek and has not made any concrete decisions, and is reviewing several offers in addition to this drama. Beware This Woman will follow Wednesday-Thursday drama Saimdang, Light’s Diary and premieres in May.

I hope she will reject. Ji Chang Wook deserves a female lead that can at well.

How can you dismiss HJM as an inferior actress using Hyde,Jekyll as your yardstick? FYI, she's in Rooftop Prince, Padam Padam, Scandal in old seoul, and she was also in Age of Shadows movie last year aka one of the best movieslast year. In terms of acting leverage, JCW is lucky to act with her.

Because when I watched Hyde, Jekyll and I, I felt noting for her. Her character and portrayal seems boring throughout the drama. No, I do not feel inclined to watch her other works because her portrayal in Hyde, Jekyll and I was not impressive enough to give me motivation to seek out her other works.

No. No. NO. Please God no. I will sob if this happens. I'm tired of idols acting. If they wanted to be actors so much they should've auditioned for it. I'm not trying to bash idol actors since Hyung Sik and SiWon are clearly showing there are merits in it if done right but I can count on my hands how many idol actors have actually been talented and STILL have fingers left over to give SM a double middle finger for trying to play me constantly.

Well, HJM is a better match for JCW anyway. Although I love LSK, she still needs to be in smaller roles and practice more and win the Korean public with memorable performance first. She is perfectly fine with an actor like Nam Joo Hyuk, but JCW is in a different league in terms of acting and experience. It did seem off that LSK was being paired with a much more serious actor, their intensities don’t even match whereas HJM does match...

Lee Sung Kyung's performance is better than Han Ji Min's in Hyde Jekyll & Me.

Maybe LSK doesn't want to be typecasted in similar role?

Hyde, Jekyll & Me as adrama was a mess. Writing, directing, plot, character development, everything was a mess. But Han Ji Min’s acting wasn’t a problem there at all. She is definitely more prominent in movies. I honestly like LSK more, but I wouldn’t say she is a better actress than HJM. But, this is just a matter of opinions I guess

I personally felt her acting was lacking in HJ&M. I felt like she barely emoted in that show. I remember even commenting how stiff she was to my sister. But the whole show was lacking so it wasn't glaringly obvious.

HJ&M is definitely not a standard to hold her up to so I am willing to give her another try.

I thought so too - she may not want to be typecast, the way Ji Chang Wook has been wrt action. But he's made it to hallyu stardom on the back of that typecasting, so it can also work well, I suppose.
Haven't seen Hyde Jekyll and me.

Me too. As much I like the drama, I personally that was because of the great writing behind it. As for performances, while both leads did okay, it was the side characters' performances that shone for me.

So yeah, I didn't understand why people keep praising both leads left and right. For an actor, they just did their jobs.

For example, Park Bo Young. I liked her in everything except Oh My Ghostess. I'm just annoyed with her character and acting there (both). So i dropped it by episode 3. I'll try again, if time permits. I don't wanna miss out on good drama. haha.

I didn’t say that she can’t play leads, I was saying that some smaller projects (like drama specials, short films, like most actresses have to go through in the beginning), not with a male lead who has got a lot of acting experience... Some male lead who will match her intensity and level of acting.

It’s only better for her too because she will get the experience and netizens won’t criticize her more if the drama fails. I agree with you that even idol actresses/actors who are worse in acting get lead roles because of agency power and popularity, but netizens criticize them too..

Yikes, this kind of kills me. I feel like it's much better to guess at acting compatibility based on chemistry and skill rather than things like height or other physical characteristics.

I've done theater and dancing as a tall girl (almost six feet), and I frequently have to deal with tons of comments like that. My favorite was at an acting audition back in high school, in which the director said after I'd read for a lead role with a shorter guy as the opposite lead, "Ah, they'd be so perfect if she wasn't so tall."

I was excited initially for Lee Sung-Kyung, and girl ain't even *that* tall. Park Bo-Young gets lots of compliments given her short, petite, stature and general adorable vibe. Love on all heights, yeah? ?

That being said, so excited for more JCW. ?

I only remember Han Ji Min from Rooftop Prince. I don't have the impression of her being firebrand. Experienced or not, LSK as an actress seems to be more interesting to me.

Now that JCW is paired with HJM, this won't be something I have to watch. Both are rather placid actors. Park Min Young and JCW worked because PMY usually has chemistry with her co-stars. I'm aware that this isn't a popular opinion :P The Healer OTP was a bundle of sweetness. Can't see it with this one. If LJK had been paired with JCW, at least some interesting dynamics could be seen out of their different styles.

Probably a pass unless reviews show otherwise.

Han Ji Min and so with some of the few kactress remain popular in their own country because people see their worth. Companies paid them more and keep on knocking on their doors because they do believe how much that person can gain more wealth for the company to grow and grow. Executives do have deliberation to come up with the most gaining project as much as possible. (that is where they get their bread and butter anyway). So much to say....just watch if you want to watch and don't if you don't.

I have been wondering why it takes so long for them to give confirmations about the casting
Samsdang already air half of its episode so the follow up drama need to hurry up filming
When Sung Kyung first got scouted for the role , the reaction from netizen seems bad. Still some positive reviews
However, the moment Ji Chang Wook cast as the male lead, most of the reviews are negative
They even left the messages to SBS that they wont watch the drama if LSK is the female lead. She does not have the ability to match with JCW's level . The rating will be low and it will be another failure for sure . Urghhh i feed so sad for her.
Reading all these negative things like this must hurt her so much
She has stopped updating her instagram for the past week when she used to regular upload pic/video for her fans
It must be a tough week for her
The new is she rejected the role
But the rumor is that she was dropped. Sbs decided to scout another actress for the role
Someone consider as A list actress
That's when today the new of Han Ji Min being contenter for the lead role come out
I feel so bitter about this situation
Sungkyung has been used for mediaplay only
All she gets are hate and hate and more hate
I really dont get so much hate on this girl
She debuted few years ago
Starting with supporting roles and work hard to where she is right now
She improved so much after each drama and managed to surpass many's expectation
She learnt from her mistakes and criticsm
She challenged herself with different type of roles and do not afraid to make herself ugly
Her acting is full of passion and fire especially i am so impressed with her Bok Joo role. I was intrigued with her acting in previous roles until totally love her in weightlifting fairy kim bok joo.
I admitted i had doubt about her taking weightlifter role however her acting has convinced me that she has talented for acting
Of course she is not perfect yet. Her acting is still a bit green. Seeing her put lots of effort of each role really warm my heart,
She is also really humble and wise in her interviews.
She does not mind taking small roles, step by step
So i hope she wont be too sad about losing this role
It might be a blessing in disguise
A better chance will come
Hard work pay off, effort won't betray you so cheer up!

About Han Ji Min

I acknowledge her beauty and talents
She has tried to widen her acting range with various roles
However i find her acting style is bland and boring as time goes by
She was so fresh and full of energy in her first few years in her career
Then somehow her roles get repeated and her acting style changed
The energy is in low level.
I watched some of her dramas/ movies recently and Rooftop Prince, hmm just okay and Padam padam is a bit better.
And hyde jekyll me .... i blame it most on the writing. No god can save that disaster
The age of shadows- quite good. But she was overshadowed by other actors

Hmm... don’t let other people affect your preference and opinion. Surely, LSK will be in a drama that will win even netizens to her side so let’s wait for a good drama offer. If I had let some beaners, or any other commenters, affect my like for some actresses, I’d probably have missed out a lot

i totally agree with you. what is even sad is that idols are getting casted easily with lackluster skills. everyone deserves a chance to fail or prove otherwise. lsk is a gem and i have been more critical of how others portray their characters after watching her dramas. she has more versatility than other actors.

I agree. Seo Hyun Jin is a good pair for JCW. It will be a new genre for her after pure romantic comedy AOHY and medical RDTK. Besides, she always get the rejected role and make the dramas become hit. In AOHY, Choi Kang Hee and Kim Ah Joong rejected the role. In RDTK, Im Soo Jung rejected it. So since LSK rejected it and I hope HJM also rejected it then they will offer the role to SHJ so it will be a big hit too.

Oh Park Shin Hye also good for this role since she seems free now. She will be a have a good chemistry with every partner that she act with. It will be great too to have her and JCW in the same drama.

I am so grateful for Choi Kang Hee and Kim Ah Joong declined On Hae Young. Because Our Hae Young will never be the same without Seo Hyun Jin.

And a big yes for Seo Hyun Jin - Ji Chang Wook pairing.. If these two, I'll watch this for sure.

Was she really droppd from the role? I hope that wasn't the case. I hope she rejected the role that's why it was offered to another. Was really disappointed that LSK will not be starring opposite JCW. Would really like to see them work together. I hope the reason why LSK rejected the role is not because of the criticisms that she got from the netizens. NJH also got a lot of negative criticisms about starring in BOTWG but that didn't stop him from accepting the role. Hope to see LSK in another drama soon. Fighting! ?

In LSK case SBS probably the one who made her drop out, remember what happened in the open competition for Sassy, they replaced the actress who worked hard to win the role with established actress like Oh Yeon Seo. In NJH case I think tvn ignored k-netz comments.

Well the priority for SBS in this case would be Ji Changwook, he's the bigger star and it seems like this will be his last drama before enlistment. They'd want to make it successful. Even if YGE lobbied for Sungkyung, it's possible that the other side wanted to trade "up" for someone who is more popular or else they'd drop out of the project. Not much can be done about that. YG is a big company, but it's not like this project is /that/ high profile, so might as well just move on from it rather than forcing the issue.

Not saying that this is what happened, lol, but it's kind of what I felt when I read the news.

I really respect Lee Sung Kyung for her performance as Baek In Ha in Cheese. It's not easy to take on such un unlikable spoiled brat of a character and make her histerically funny. In addition, overacting or manga style performance can get really annoying, really fast. I can't think of many characters acted in such a way that I liked. I know the PD instructed her to dial it up to eleven for comic purposes and I feel she really pulled it off, at least she never failed to make me laugh like a maniac during her scenes. I feel she has something I can't pinpoint that makes her really likable on screen, even as she still has room for improvement.

It's disappointing if she was indeed dropped, the drama does sound interesting and her character would have been quite a challenge for her. I hope she has other promising projects to consider and she won't feel too down about this one not working out.

As for Han Ji Min, I've only seen bits and pieces of her work, like just a few episodes from various dramas she did, so I can't exactly form a coherent opinion, nor it would be fair to do so. I'll only say I wasn't left with any impression of her at all. Make of that what you will.

I'm still looking forward to the drama, first and foremost because it's coming from the writer of IRY. I don't watch dramas just to see a certain actor or a certain pairing, so the initial casting would have been nice, but not mandatory for me. Hoping for a good story and good acting.

You must be a fan of one-dimentional Korean style of acting. Most k-actors portrayal all their characters with one-tone facial expressions and sometimes no expression at all. If you mute the dialoque, you would have thought they are jusy staring in blank wall. Some people mistook it as subtle. It's not subtle, it's bad acting.

I am most definitely not a fan of blank wall acting, not sure what exactly in my comment made you think so. If I don't usually like overacting, then I must like underacting, is that your conclusion? Actually I have very particular preferences when it comes to acting, sometimes I surprise even myself. It really depends, it's case by case. It's not a clear-cut standard as you assume.

IMO, I don't think there is such thing as overacting or underacting, only bad or good acting. It boils down to the actors interpretation of the character. For instance LSK in CITT, definitely there are people who are like or even worse. Another example, Joo Won interpretation of a person with savant syndrome in Good Doctor. This one was a bit tricky as the character was specifically defined. Ironically Joo Won was critically acclaimed for the role but if you research about people with savant syndrome, you would know that they don't act like how Joo Won portrayed them in the drama.

Usually underacting is defined exactly as what you wrote above and what you equate with bad acting. But even a very subdued acting style can work, just like a very animated performance can work depending on the character and many other factors. It can just as well not work. I think we agree that it goes case by case.

The reason I talked about In Ha specifically is because I know LSK's performance received mixed reactions. A lot of people thought she overacted. I thought that whatever she did, overacting or not, it turned out great. Her character worked for me and was a highlight of the drama. I've seen enough attempts at similar characters that failed and became an annoyance instead, which made me appreciate her more. But that doesn't mean this type of performance can't be done well or is bound to be bad, but not many actors have the skills to pull it off. Can't comment on Joo Won in Good Doctor, I haven't seen it.

Like I said, I don't necessarily prefer one particular one-and-only acting style, so I'm not sure what you're trying to argue here. In the end we all have our preferences and opinions, I doubt anyone here is an expert.

0

Don't you think there are no characters like the LSK Inha IRL? I have seen even RL characters louder than her and with attitude worse and more annoying than the Inha she projected. How can that be overacting when she was effectively projecting those kind of characters?

0

Why do you watch Korean dramas then, as you don't seem to enjoy ’one-dimensional Korean style of acting, that most k-actors portray with one-tone facial expressions or sometimes no expressions at all’...? I also find your statement false.

All those expressions LSK made in CITT are definitely not bland or one-tone. I actually loved her portrayal of Baek In-Ha because it just fit the character quite well imo. And I must be one of the few who prefer In-Ha over Bok-Joo

she made the character more interesting. she is a funny villainess ... kinda theatric over the top with her own spin. you don't know if you would hate her or be amused. i guess this acting is not for everyone. some people would like to see your cookie cutter and usual sinister villainess portrayal who only lives to make life difficult for the protagonist. boriiingggg! imo, lsk rocked in citt.

I didn't say all but emotionless type of acting is very common. There are only few k-actors who can vividly show emotions. There those who can act but only rare who can show emotions in multi-dimensions and also very very few who can deliver characters uniquely from one drama to another.

I like In Ha too in Cheese. Like you said, she's funny and I like her interaction with In Ho. The interaction is like real siblings. As for her overreaction as claimed by others, I find that refreshing since the webtoon In Ha is too much like the angsty, backstabbing second female lead. So to have a second female lead that is not angsty is refreshing for me because all the angst makes me feel tired.

Her behavior might not exists in real world, but as comic relief, I am glad.

As for the actress, I am impressed that she went all out to act out such a crude character.

I respect Han Jim Min for her excellent work opposite the special effects gorilla in 'Hyde, Jekyll, and Me.' Think of all the other actresses who've done good work opposite special effects gorillas, such as Fay Wray, Jessia Lange, Naomi Watts, and Brie Larson! It is a great way to break through to true stardom. Are there any super-hero roles she would like to play?

Okay, I admit it. I started laughing at the CGI gorilla in that series and gave up after the first episode.

LSK reminds me a lot of Jennifer Lawrence.

I think it's smart of LSK not to take this role. I'm a huge fan of hers and I think she needs to take some more grounded roles (roles that don't involve her making overly exaggerated faces and weird voices) and then go back into rom-com. That said, I'm bummed at the idea that she and JCW won't be on screen together.

So funny that most of these comments criticizing Han Ji Min is because of that flop of a drama Hyde Jekyll and Me. The drama was literally a headache from beginning to end. Even Hyun Bin and all the other actors/actresses failed to bring the drama altogether. And to be quite honest, I found Hyun Bin's performance quite lacking in Hyde Jekyll and Me too. The writing was sloppy, the directing was sloppy, and the acting was sloppy all around.

I find Han Ji Min quite versatile. From her character in Cain and Abel to her cold hearted character in Padam Padam to her comedic candy role in Rooftop Prince. I have especially enjoyed her movies (Plan Man, Fatal Encounter, Age of Shadows). I think movies really showcase her acting. I would love to see her back in dramaland! Also, visually, she and JCW will look amazing together!

I think most of those who criticized HJM are clueless about her acting career as well and/or viewers who fell in love with LSK because of her recent work in Weightlifter. Rather than her acting, I think it's her personality that made a lasting impression on me. Yes, she has a pretty face, but I think she usually has great chemistry with her co-stars. What's to hate, really. People are always expecting masterpieces out of dramas, when sometimes the actress who gets the job done exceeds their expectations.
