Hot and steamy in first teasers for dark legal thriller Whisper
Perhaps making up for its lack of promo so far, SBS’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama Whisper released its first two teasers all at once, packed full of chilling revenge and suspense to come. Taking place primarily at a law firm called Taebaek, this drama tells the story of how a man and a woman go from being bitter enemies to lovers who risk everything on the strength of their relationship to fight corruption and punish the wicked.
I was initially really nervous about this drama because it features a reunion between Lee Bo-young (God’s Gift–14 Days) and Lee Sang-yoon (On the Way to the Airport) who starred in one of my favorite family dramas of all time, My Daughter Seo-young. I know sometimes reunions can kill some of the magic that past drama may have had (I’m looking at you Kwon Sang-woo and Cho Ji-woo!), but after watching the new teasers, I must say I’m looking forward to seeing this one happen.
The longer teaser starts with an ominous clapping of thunder while the copy reads: “Those who fight beasts, beware of turning into one yourselves.” Kim Chang-wan (Hwarang), who plays Lee Sang-yoon’s father, says to him in the voiceover that the question he should really be asking is what type of person he is and how far he’s willing to go. He places a diamond clip on Lee Sang-yoon’s tie, as flashes show his conflicted face.
We first see police officer Lee Bo-young hard at work investigating the Taebaek law firm, but her father, played by Kang Shin-il (Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho) is dragged away, perhaps wrongfully framed, and she finds out that judge Lee Sang-yoon is in charge of her father’s trial. She scrambles to find out more evidence, but the copy describes her as “a detective trampled by monsters,” and eventually she realizes that the bad guys have all the power in the world. We’re told that there’s a cruel betrayal, and then she’s being interrogated by Lee Sang-yoon as a suspect.
The feeling of being chased to the brink pervades the teaser as we see clips of Lee Sang-yoon bowing to the undeserving justice system, mobsters attacking Lee Bo-young, and law firm CEO Kim Gab-soo (The K2) out for a hunt. We get quick flashes of supporting leads Kwon Yul (Bring It On, Ghost) and Park Se-young (Beautiful Mind) staring intensely at the camera. All the while, the music crescendoes at the end of the final scene where a distraught, half-naked Lee Sang-yoon asks Lee Bo-young, “Why me?” To which she coldly stares down and says, “Because I believed in your promise.”
The shorter teaser below begins with Lee Sang-yoon drunk in the backseat of his car, as Lee Bo-young lifts her head from the driver’s seat. In voiceover she says, “If a judge were to lure and rape the daughter of a defendant…” And the next thing we know, they’re in bed together. He wakes up and calls out her name hesitantly, but she barks at him, “Shut up.” We see flashes of an incident on a rainy night involving the heroine’s father, and Lee Sang-yoon says that everyone from cops to prosecutors to reporters were crooked and complicit in this case. “So why only me?!” he asks. She answers, “Because I trusted you.” The copy reads: “Bringing judgment upon rotted power. Her punishment begins. A fatal whisper.”
Oooh~ creepy chills already! SBS’s new legal thriller Whisper will begin airing on March 27 after Lee Bo-young’s hubbie Ji Sung’s drama Defendant finishes its run.
