Jang Hee-jin replaces ill Gu Hye-sun in currently airing You’re Too Much

Gu Hye-sun, Jang Hee-jin

Bad news for Gu Hye-sun, who is being forced to quit her relatively new weekend drama, You’re Too Much, due to health concerns. According to reports, a severe allergy recently triggered anaphylaxis and brought on dizzy spells and difficult breathing. She was taken to the emergency room and is currently receiving medical care. According to producers, multiple meetings were held to figure out how to work around Gu’s health, but in the end it was decided that she needed to leave entirely and focus on her recovery.

You’re Too Much has only aired six of fifty total episodes, so there’s quite a way to go, and stepping in to take over Gu’s character is Jang Hee-jin (Introverted Boss). I imagine it’ll be quite tricky to have to jump into a new character so quickly, particularly as the role involves singing, dancing, and Uhm Jung-hwa impersonations. Her character is the sweet, sacrificing Hae-dang, who has spent the last decade impersonating pop diva Yoo Ji-na (Uhm Jung-hwa). The drama started with the two women striking up an unlikely friendship, which soured when Ji-na stole Hae-dang’s man (sigh), and seems now poised to build on their rivalry as Hae-dang starts to built up her own career and stands up for herself.

It’s rare to have a drama swap in a different actress to play the same character (rather than, say, writing out the character and introducing a new one), though not unheard of; recently, another MBC weekend drama, Blow Breeze, had to swap out an actress when Oh Ji-eun sprained a leg and damaged a ligament while filming and was replaced by Im Soo-hyang. In this case, I actually think Jang Hee-jin will make a great replacement, and think the show was lucky to be able to find someone like her on such short notice. I’ve noticed Jang turning in wonderful performances in supporting roles in recent years (Scholar Who Walks the Night, Village: Secret of Achiara, Mirror of the Witch, Introverted Boss) and wondered when she’d get her headlining role. The circumstances surrounding this one may not be optimal, but I hope she’ll take on the role with her brand of charm and sass.

The drama’s producers said, “Everyone feels sad for Gu Hye-sun’s departure from the show. On set, she approached the drama with a brighter and more energetic spirit than anyone, and showed her own style of charm in expressing the pivotal ‘Hae-dang’ character.” On Friday, Uhm Jung-hwa posted an SNS message in support of Gu, saying, “Hye-sun. I hope you recover your health as quickly as possible…”

You’re Too Much airs on Saturdays and Sundays on MBC; Jang Hee-jin will join the show starting with its next episode (number 7) tomorrow.

She isn't her friend, nor does she like her as an actress, so what do you expect from her? "Sincerely" say how sorry she is and forget the next moment?
This site is about dramas so obviously someone comments about drama, no need to guilt trip Katami.

Well, Gu Hye Sun had anaphylaxis, which is a life threatening condition. Being gleeful over her department from the drama because of a severe physiological reaction is uncivil and sinister. Besides GHS has had actually good feedback from this drama and many viewers expressed their worries too. Seriously, if you have nothing nice to say at all then better keep it to your self. This is to @katami and to @Nerdy too

Totally agree. Some people can be so rude..!

0

For gods sake, no one said anything bad to her personally, no one said "FINALLY SHE LEAVES" or expressed any happiness over her condition.
It is simply that we didn't express our pity, and I am sorry -I believe I have a big hurt but I can't feel sorry for every living being who suffers, if I did I would die from stress in a week or two.
And it doesn't matter if she got positive responses or not, important part is that @Katami didn't like her as an actress, so she has all rights to save her pity for someone else and not feel guilty about it.

0

isn't it more rude to be patronizing just because someboody is in hospital..

her comment is on the drama itself.. why are all of you stretching it in 360 degrees

Should we be asking each other now.. that how come you are still continuing to enjoy the night when you just heard somebody got admitted..

she got admitted.. her heath.. best wishes for her.. but that won't make her a good actress..

Peopl in vietnam died, should US hang itself?

0

Wow at the complete lack of empathy @Nerdy and @EZ. My point stands. People could have expressed their delight over changes in cast more tastefully, given the circumstances. I am not saying that you should shed tears over every underprivileged person on this earth, no one even expects anyone to do that. But it’s basic manners to know what is appropriate and what is inappropriate.
I’m not particularly fond of GHS’s acting either but never would I write that ’now I can consider watching this drama, no hard feelings for this girl but I can’t stand her acting’, when she’s possibly fighting for her life. This just shows how much eloquence and emotional growth one has.
And btw, what a prick thing to say about the Vietnam war wtf, USA shouldn’t hang themselves?!? War crimes should be punished due severity and all nations should work together so people don’t have to suffer as much. What a nasty way to derail...

0

Only can say, completely agree with @Megan

0

totally agree with you @Megan. i just can't believe some kdrama fans whose willing to go overboard.

0

Well we can expect her/him to be a bit lesser mean maybe.

An actress is suffering to the extent that she had to be removed, is it too much to ask for a little compassion?

Honestly people can be so mean

also @Nerdy why does it sound like you and @Katami are the same person? What with the similar rude tone of both the comments

hhh srsly it's just the first thought i got after reading the title ..i didn't even read the article cuz i was too happy :v and then i just didn't edited or wrote another comment that's it ..no need to write a drama about it ^^

0

Thanks Nerdy I was about to say that .. @topper and @megan I can say oh i'm sorry for her ..best wishes etc etc .. but i skipped that point cuz it's obvious ..no one wishes harm for another one ..I was talking about THE drama ;) and the fact she left it ... this doesnt mean i'm happy cuz she got sick U_U as i said i don't hate the actress but i wasn't considering watching the drama becuz of her acting ..and this doesn't necessarily mean it'll get better with her departure ...waiting for more feedback to decide though ;)

I read all your comments on this comment section (..wow again) and I don’t want to resolve to ad hominem so I’ll just let it be. Peace ;)

0

You're not a fan of GHS, perfectly understandable. But I think you "put your foot in the mouth" when you made your first comment. Had the actress left the drama due to poor performance, readers would've have been fine with your comment. But in this case, GHS left due to health issues and there are fans and readers who worry for her. So when you make a comment like that, you sound insensitive and you know people are going to jump on you like that. So the comment should've been kept to yourself. Do a happy dance in private, share your good news with your friend, whatever. When you put it out like that, you're setting yourself up for criticism. BTW, it's a good rule of thumb to read through the article before commenting. I learned from experience.

0

It is amazing how the first thing people think when minority/two people have the same opinon is that they are the same person...and here I was, thinking my bad English made me a special snowflake (maybe it isn't that bad afterall?).
For the one who left, some people don't find the need to post about how much they pity someone while perfectly knowing that this person isn't gonna read it, it doesn't make them mean/rude/sensless (as you called us, through I wonder what that makes you who knew perfectly well that we are gonna read it)
So as you said, Peace and as I add, less unreasonable judgment ?

0

@Nerdy you're kinda exaggerating what they're saying though. i don't think anyone expects katami to write a paragraph hoping she gets better. just a simple comment hoping she gets better is fine, or even just not comment at all tbh. it's kind of messed up to have the first comment on a post about an actress having a life-threatening condition be about how you can finally watch a drama now that she's not in it.

0

No I agree with topper. You can like whoever you want and talk about a drama, but have you can have some common decency as well. SMH

I think people are taking katami's comment a little too seriously and reading way too much into it. You don't have to say 'I hope she gets well' to feel empathy or to wish this of her. Just because katami didn't say this in her comment doesn't mean she is heartless and cruel. Not once did she make a comment about being happy GHS is sick, she simply made a comment about not liking her acting and will now give the show a chance because she isn't in it. No need to grab the pitchforks and torches because her comment didn't specifically say 'I hope she gets better'.

'OKAY Gu hye sun is out , now I’m considering to watch it’
this sounds low-key gleeful, and quite frankly, it sounds rude and inappropriate considering that GHS is in severe condition. I know @katami didn’t prolly mean that way but that’s how other people read it and instead of rectifying the assumptions they just went defensive and replied sarcastically, so it further strengthened my opinion. But.. whatever floats your boat ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, she left the drama because she was sick. But I didn't read in Katami's post that she was gleeful she was sick. She was gleeful she left the drama. Just because the OP was happy she left the drama doesn't mean she is happy she is sick. That's where people are reading too much into things. I personally am ecstatic she left the drama but I'm not ecstatic she is sick and hope she does recover soon. I do agree with the original poster, that I was actually interested in the drama but I am not a fan of GHS and it has kept me away. Now that she has left I am actually interested in the show again. Again, you are reading WAY too much into the comment and automatically coming to the conclusion that the OP lacks all empathy simply because she didn't specifically say 'I am sad she is sick'. The OP also clarified that the comment was unrelated to her being sick and was just about her leaving the drama.

I just see it as a little sad that people are so willing to think the worst of other people.

I agreed with you. When I first read her comment, I kind of chuckled b/c I know how GHS's acting is... and it's cringe worthy (remembering BOF). But it never crossed my mind that people would take it as a negative comment that OP was talking about her health. Seriously? That far? Okay.

0

Maybe because she said " Gu Hye Sun it out... " looks like she is happy that GHS is now quit. I never thought it will be too serious.

Anyway, no normal person will jump in joy after hearing someone's bad news, being her fan or non-fans we all praying for her speedy recovery.

With due respect, speaking from drama's perspective, why cannot someone commenting like "now I think I will watch this... ". I mean yes the news about she is sick is one thing and we are deeply saddened by it, but there is also news about other actress to replace her. No one is extremely happy in this thread. We all sad hearing the news but no need to be extra sensitive.

0

@Sera The Ms Temper
Well, I really didn’t want to sound like a complainer and I’m happy too that Jang Hee Jin gets to show her acting. However, there were some commenters who literally jumped to the comments that merely stated that the first comment came out harsh. They brought Vietnam war and whatnot analogies and sounded really accusatory, as if those, who pointed out that the first comment lacked empathy, were unreasonably 'butthurt’... Yeah, I know this is a drama related website where drama and acting matters more and private life is private life, but this is a bit too much in my opinion. If GHS left the drama for other reasons than a life threatening condition, than I or other commenters wouldn’t have stated our astonishment over the first comment and the consecutive defensive comments. I hope you understand my point of view too..

When I was in college there was a time when one of my lecturers came in the class to announce that the next class was cancelled because the lecturer in charge was having a cold. Some of us, including me, cheered to the news of having a cancelled class. The lecturer who brought the news watched us for a few seconds and patiently waited for us to calm down then asked, 'should you be that happy when your lecturer is feeling unwell?'

It's been almost ten years, but I learned a lot from the experience. Did she take things too far, like some of the commentors here suggest? I think not. There are circumstances where your luck, success, or something as simple as enjoyment is brought about by someone else's misfortune and sacrifice. The problem is not about whether one has or hasn't got the right to voice one's opinion about the show, but about treading on a lot of grey areas. It's in circumstances like this, where good things come to you directly as a result of someone's misfortune, then some self-restrained way of expressing happiness in public is always appreciated.

On aside note, I think I will start to re-watch this drama, I left after epi 2 because don't think I can deal with this drama. But with Jang Hee Jin on board, I will start it again. It is about time for JHJ to lead a drama, she has been so awesome as second leads and supporting characters before.

The changing of the cast i dont think will give that much impact though. Not that MBC hadn't done before.

Dropped it after watching the first two episodes because of the awkward acting. But now will re-watch it because of JHJ, like her acting in On the Way to the Airport. Hopefully the ratings and feedback will be positive, and she get more recognition!
As for GHS, since acting is not her forte, maybe next time she can comeback with a variety show (i.e. Newly Wed Season 2) instead of drama, because that's comparably less burden than filming dramas. Get well soon girl!

I also think MBC is lucky. They landed in trouble like that and even got out of it with a great replacement. Jang Hee Jin will be excellent but I am guessing Hae Dang will be very different now. I look forward to it.

internet provides a virtual social interaction between people. This virtuality made some people believe that the person they are interacting with is also virtual. That's why they can get more insensitive, aggressive, or rude than they are irl.

I'm sure nobody in their right mind would be happy to learn someone is seriously sick. Consider learning that coworker of yours who keeps getting on your nerves got sick and had to quit. You can be happy that he will be gone, but still be sad that he's sick and would never express your feelings that openly. you could be silent, or even make a recovery wish just out of politeness. This is how real life works. For some, this is one of the best parts of the internet that there are no social etiquette, you are free to say whatever comes to your mind. But I'm one of those people who cannot ignore the fact that this may not be the real life, but the persons are real. So, I cannot leave the real life social etiquette behind. However, this is not what I expect from everyone. Some people are more open to what internet brings, and as long as they don't cross many lines, I am OK that they express their feelings and thoughts free of any social etiquette.

This is one of those instances here. I personally would never make such a comment, be it irl or on internet. But, some people can, they don't see nothing wrong about it, and they don't have to keep it in just because it's the proper way to do irl. We are on internet where the definition of appropriate behavior is not solid anymore. We should be at least this much of flexible to accept these kind of comments, which are not outright rude, just not within the real-life appropriateness.

What I sincerely felt after reading this article? I was really sad for her. Getting sick is hard enough, and leaving your work because of getting sick? Must be devastating. Also, she is one of the leads, it is bad for the drama to change it's lead while it's still running too, no matter how bad of an actress she is (I have only seen her in bof, not enough to judge her acting, but that's what everyone says). Bad news no matter where you look at it. Hope she gets well soon!

as someone who's quite an avid daily drama viewer (I know; it can get pretty stressful but can't just stay away!), replacing an actor for the same character isn't unheard of, but rarely for the leads.

I think it's a good decision for GHS to leave, as her health should be priority.

There could be a lot going on for poor GHS. It must have been awful for her to decide to have to leave the drama for this illness, so I'm sure it's not easy on her - or the production team - or on her poor young husband, who must be worried to death.
The very first thing that occurred to me is that she might be pregnant - and first pregnancies can be awfully rough on young, very thin women. Often, the biggest sign of a healthy first pregnancy, as strange as it seems, is absolutely awful morning sickness. It comes as a total surprise and it is never-ending. The vomiting goes on all day long, and for weeks. Those who haven't gone through it before are freaked out and scared. If GHS is, indeed, pregnant, I bet the doctors and her family will not confirm it until after she passes the safe mark of 8-12 weeks, so I hope she gets the rest and care she needs.
On the other hand, extreme stress can also bring out an illness like this, especially if she is susceptible to reacting to certain foods. She has struck me lately as a young woman who is bravely fighting off a lot of stress in her young marriage. Stress will not help a body deal with gastrointestinal distress or an infection. I know it might be just me, and I've been repeating myself in various posts over the past few months, but something doesn't feel right. As much as people are oohing and ahh-ing over the perceived "sweetness" of her marriage, there's something under the surface that seems, in my opinion, to be bothering her. Hidden and camouflaged stress is the #1 culprit for all kinds of ailments, and....I will repeat myself ad nauseam here...I hope her body can heal soon....actually, I hope she is pregnant above anything else. This is just my opinion, not a blanket statement of fact.

Maybe she is stressed from having to do both variety show and drama esp 50 episodes long- very tiring and also just married- have household chores to do. Very hard for women to juggle work and home. Hope she gets well, get pregnant and have a cute baby

well, her husband did said once in variety show that not a lot of people, especially friends in the industry actually approve they getting married. cited that they are quite young and just starting their career. probably there still people still giving this kind of advice after they got married, adding the stress.

From what I read, those people are not making those comments anymore because they see how happy and in love this couple is. A lot of people envy them for finding their soul mate.

I watched a BTS on you tube and you could tell she was not feeling well, especially when the crew was setting up the food. She would look away with a look on her face like she didn't want to be there. And then to have to act with the food when the cameras are rolling, most likely feeling nauseous.

I felt really bad for her since it was her first drama in 2 years (since Blood, which was not well received). It seemed like opinions were mixed about her acting in this one which is an improvement over all really negative feedback from Blood. So it seemed like she could possibly have been on her way to recovering some of her acting reputation.

I'm also sad not to see Gu Hye Sun's HeoDang and Kang Tae Oh's cute blind character reunite! They look incredibly cute together!

I also really like Jang Hee Jin (so memorable in Achiara's Secret!), but I'd like her first leading role to be in either a non weekend drama or a weekend drama that has more likable people and is better written.

I have to agree that Hye Sun's acting in Blood was just so so but it did get better as the drama went along. But this character is perfect for her and she did an amazing job portraying her. So sad because she loved playing this role.

GHS indeed talented actress is just that i hope she learn more since her acting sometime can be awkward. She also tent to play cinderella type of character were heroin so poor and get bully without the character had deeper plot they just poor and kind and love by the hero....

Trutly i not that eager to watch this drama...usually i just wait it end watch it full episode after it finished. And this drama had 50 episode thus i dont want to watch it as i dont believe her....she talented...believe me, i watch her drama, but she sometime had this idk how i can describe its...its just sometime i cant relate with the role she potray(e.g a character want to get reveage but we dont see from her/he facial expresion...its just word)
Which i can fast foward the video to the next duration.

And forgive me, blame me and can curse me to death but i surely happy to know JHJ gonna replace the character.. its not like i hate GHS(had to say this many time since) sorry i love her..she beautiful and cute...but JHJ were so talented, her acting skill can make me lost in the drama with the way he potray her character which reason i watch drama...she doing briliant job as supporting role that i hope to see her as a lead character...i believe even she doing cinderella type heroin we able to relate it....and it make me want to follow up this drama weekly...

Sorry again if i sound to excited for this replacement.. its not like i hate GHS. I believe with supported loving husband, cute dog and cat pet, family and friend she can recover faster and i wish she will take care her health..no pressure...sometime the actress to pressure that her/he acting skill became awkward..(sudenly remember cha tae hyun were her wife said that he relax more after married...and i can see that he act freely not awkward as before.) So i wish for them happiness able to let go, just do the best..i believe she can do better to potray the roles.

Back to JHJ i cant wait to see her....and i sure to follow up this drama...

Dont hate me...youre to much if you hate me...

I love GHS
I love JHJ

Have you watched the drama yet? The new actress just doesn't capture this character the way Hye Sun did. The whole good feel is off now. No offense to the new actress but she is better playing the second lead villians which she is good at.

I'm someone with so many food allergies it massively restricts what I can eat - nuts, tomatoes, eggs, beans, pea, pulses are all no good. It makes me so paranoid over food because I'm constantly risking anaphalytic shock if I try new things. I hope Gu Hye-sun gets better and I hope she never has to deal with something like this again, because I've been there.

To our dear Goo Hye Sun, get well soon princess. You gave an outstanding performance in You Are To Much and your fans all over the world will surely miss you.

- GHS weeped at JaeHee's death...viewers also cried.

- Actress GHS's heartbreaking wailing over the death of her lover also brought the viewers to tears.

- HD's heart sank sending off her love. Nothing else mattered. Those who watched GHS also felt deeply touched and moved.

- Netizens praised: I saw me crying with GHS. When HD cried, I could not stop crying. Even her crying is so beautiful. GHS and Um JungHwa's chemistry is good.

- Production team states: That scene was filmed in great cold. Before the film rolled, they were all jumping from the freezing cold. But as soon as the camera ran, nothing mattered to the actors, but the perfect emotion of that moment.

YATM is a good drama but it won't be the same without you. I wish YATM all the best but I can no longer watch it.

- Because GHS showed good chemistry with both male characters, JGW and KTO, she is dubbed a new "chemi queeen".

[★밤TV플러스]'당신은' 구혜선의 매력 대잔치(ft.강태오·정겨운)=A big party of GHS's charms (ft Kang TH and Jung GW)

The article praises GHS for being able to produce different type of charms between two actors in YATM. In quick summary, the article is saying that GHS is able to be mellow and dramatic with Kang and is able to be funny with Jung. Her "chemi" with two different male actors are creating more interest in the drama.

I agree with you 100%. Hye Sun's chemistry with both males was great and now it sucks with the new actress. And why does the new actress always look like a deer caught in the head lights.

Let me elaborate: When Hye Sun cries you see and feel her emotion which usually brings me to tears. When the new actress cries, she gives a long blinkless stare and her eyes stay watery. When Hye Sun gets angry you listen to what she is angry about, but the new actress bugs out her eyes to show the anger. When Hye Sun acts fiesty like with the second lead males, it is funny but the new actress doesn't act fiesty at all, she just says the words.

If we feel hurt with any comments about our lovely celebs, just try to forgive and forget. Lets we share love more and more ...

Ku Hye Sun as amazing in this role. I have already watched the new actress in ep 7 and 8 and I am done with the drama. She is not good in the role IMO. Much better as a second lead villian.
