Yeon Woo-jin offered lead in sageuk romance Seven Day Queen

I didn’t even ask for this, but now that it’s been announced as a possibility, it’s all I ever wanted for this show: Yeon Woo-jin (Introverted Boss) has been offered the lead in new KBS sageuk romance Seven Day Queen, which comes from Healer’s PD and is being considered by Park Min-young (Remember—Son’s War) and Jin Gu (Night Light).

Yeon is considering taking the role of King Jungjong; Lee Jin-wook (Goodbye Mr. Black) was initially in contention but has bowed out. Seven Day Queen tells the story of Joseon’s King Jungjong and his queen, Dangyeong, who was crowned and dethroned within a week’s time. Despite his royal birth, Jungjong was forced to live a stifled existence, unable to do a thing lest he appear to challenge his older half-brother, tyrant king Yeonsangun (a character currently being portrayed by Kim Ji-suk in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, which Jin Gu is up to play here).

After Yeonsangun was overthrown, Jungjong became king and dreamed of being a good ruler to his country. However, the queen’s father was opposed to his rule and attempted a coup; he was killed, and Queen Dangyeong then deposed. It sounds like a tragic love story, as the king is said to have looked up at the mountain toward her every day following her departure, and the queen placed her skirt on a rock on that mountain so that he would know she thought of him too.

I’m thrilled at the idea of having Yeon Woo-jin in another drama so soon, because while he was brilliant in Introverted Boss, it was so flawed and uneven that I didn’t find it satisfying. I like this cast and team so far, and have found PD Lee Jung-sub’s dramas solid and stylish; he’s also worked on Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and 2008’s Hong Gil Dong. And while I like Lee Jin-wook just fine, I find Yeon Woo-jin a more nuanced and complex actor, and consider this swap a happy upgrade.

Seven Day Queen will be a Wednesday-Thursday drama on KBS to follow Mystery Queen.

I don't think he is weak as male lead. But with these casts in sageuk, I agree the male lead should be the strongest actor among them. Someone with Yoo Ah In's calibre.

I didnt mean that way. He's good actor, I know that, but his name alone didnt enough to create some buzz esp if he's the male lead. Plus this is saeguk.

Look at lee sung kyung, she is good actress too, but IMO she's still not good enough to attract people to watch her drama esp if she's the female lead (and act together with actor like Ji Chang Wook). She's still pretty weak

Hmm... While i admit that Yeon Woo-jin is a better actor than Lee Jin-wook, but put him beside Jin Goo, he will be overshadowed. His charisma is lacking if compared to those two. Even Song Joong-ki barely escaped being overshadowed by Jin Goo in DOTS. I actually kind of disappointed that Lee Jin-wook didn't take this role. He was good in sageuk and i think he would make a good pair with Park Min-young.

Lee Jin Wok isn't exactly a charismatic actor either. Maybe that's exactly the vibe they're looking for this particular role

0

Required fields are marked *

I think it's pretty subjective. Personally I didn't feel Jin Goo's charisma in DOTS, in fact his character felt stiff and most of the fun came from Song Joong ki's character. But I am (highly) biased towards SJK so it could be that as well.

So I am apprehensive if Jin Goo can pull of being a crazed/maniacal/paranoid king honestly.

Lee Jin Wook is so damn boring. The only good acting he was in Nine and the stoic character in Spy Myung Wol. Other than that, second lead easily to take spot from him. He is lack of screen presence. He's similar with Oh Ji Ho. They're beautiful but that's it.

Required fields are marked *

I would agree with you on this one. I love him in Nine but he was overshadowed by Kim Ji Suk in I Need Romance 2. I had a second lead syndrome on that drama. His charisma depends on the kind of role he plays. He could be boring at times.

Required fields are marked *

I think personally he will do just fine, i mean he did act against LJK and not even as all perfect nice second male lead which we love to see. He was psycho murderer and still hold the audience. He shined like a star along side LJK. And I am a big LJK fan, can't compare him with anybody. But still tht man has caliber.

0

Required fields are marked *

He is good, I like him in Arang & The Magistrate. From acting chop, I will say he is quite better or maybe more consistent than Jin Gu. Jin Gu is more charismatic in appearance, but tend to have the stoic face sometimes. I didnt watch YWJ in Seondal yet.

Anyway, if he accepts, I may watch this drama. But maybe another sageuk for you, oppa?

Required fields are marked *

Acting chops yes, he can definitely compete with Jin Gu. He was good in Arang and was good in the few episodes of Introverted until the drama became too slimy to handle.

For saying that SSK barely escapes being overshadowed by Jin Go. The reason I think was because SSK's role in DOTS was too cheesy unlike Jin Go's character was written to be a cool guy.

Agree with you about Jin Goo... maybe I should have put my above comment here instead. Stoic is the exact opposite of the King he needs to be here, so I worry if he can pull it off. But if he can, then props to him! I always like a pleasant surprise.
Has Jin Goo been in a saeguk before this?

Kim Ji Suk is doing well as Yeonsangun in Rebel right now, but he is always a versatile actor although we often see him playing funny role. I cannot help to compare him with Jin Gu's version (if he accepts) later. Jin Goo had done sageuk movies before, Showdown and Roarring Currents.

In DOTS I love his character more than SJK. as but I love them as actors equally ? They give different vibe that I like.

0

Well, I hope he will end up getting the role. He has able to pull off Introverted Boss with very weak storyline and unpopular leading lady and think he will do just fine for this drama.

0

@Sera The Ms Temper was right. I was not comparing the actors' acting skill, but the characters. The magistrate is an interesting character, but for me, Yeon Woo Jin's character is even more interesting. I started watching Arang because of Lee Jun Ki, but became more invested in Yeon Woo Jin's character and his portrayal.

I am definitely in the minority to say I find LJG very hit and miss. He can be excellent in some shows and then in others he is laughably bad with how extreme he overacts. True I would take him over someone who can't emote at all. But sometimes I just shake my head at some of his overdone acting. This isn't to say I don't like him, as I do.

You must have like those one-dimensional act, shallow interpretation and simple characters common in romance dramas. Some of those kind of acts even deliver the same emotion all through out the drama and worst from one drama to another.

Well, definitely that is not LJG. Most of his characters are really complex and characters that develop in really wider range. I have only seen few actors who could pull these characters.

Though I have seen him in quite characters in few of his really old works e.g Virgin Snow and Flying Boys. Of course I could understand because he was still young back then. Thought, it wasn't bad but also not critical good. Then I think in his drama Hero... That one was a miss for me.

0

"You must have like those one-dimensional act, shallow interpretation and simple characters common in romance dramas."

Not really. I'm actually not as big into the romance dramas and tend to find those types of characters boring (I do like romances and rom-coms for the mindless pleasure but all my favorite dramas are genres other then romances). Some of my favorite actors are Gong Yoo, Kim Soo-Hyun, Hyun Bin, Cho Jung-Seok and so on. I like them because they can do very complex characters and emotions without needing to be extreme. They are more nuanced in their acting, and in my opinion, it can show emotions better then the extreme over-the-top acting. I am also not alone in my opinion that LJG does overact at times. Like I said before, I do like LJG and think he has done a great job in some dramas, but I feel like he does sometimes have that tendency to go overboard.

0

The only reason why I thought Hero was a miss even he did well in that; IMO because he delivered the same interpretation as what he did in the drama prior to this.

0

Actors are as good as their last performance. Acting is always hit and miss.
I love all the actors that you mentioned though acting performance per-se, except Gong Yoo as he does the same thing from Coffee Prince to Goblin not just the acting and expression but even the look. (Verdict- all miss for drama characters, but I love Coffee Prince for entertainment value. Thinking about it, I endured to finish Big. Now, I wouldn’t waste time on that drama.)
While many love Kill Me Heal Me, I actually preferred Hyun Bin's Jekyll and Hyde. Though I love him since Kim Sam Soon, but I must say he does not possess the same depth and versatility as LJG. (Verdict: Secret Garden was definitely a miss (this drama was too cheesy). Though I don’t the middle part of this drama but I love Hyun Bin’s performance in Jekyll & Hyde, the rest are only for entertainment value)
I notice Kim Soo Hyun since Will It Snow this Christmas. But he hasn’t really shown anything new since Moon Embraces the Sun. In his movie Secretly Greatly & drama the Producer, it feels like he portrayed the same character. Btw, has he portrayed a much complex character yet? (Verdict: Only Hit was Moon Embraces the Sun, I don’t understand the hype of MLFTS & the Producers)
Jo Jung Suk, well definitely he is a theatrical guy. Though he has not done a daring and challenging characters (in drama) as yet but I love how he makes a simple character into an interesting one. Say in Jealousy Incarnate, his acting was a little bit exaggerated but do I have to call it over-acting? NO, it’s called interpretation. I actually loved it and the extra movements actually adds colour to the character. I believe he is one of the actors that can go all out and can be as eccentric and crazy as he can be. That is why I don’t understand why he’s only doing those less promising characters. (Verdict: I love him as an actor but he only played characters similar to characters played by Gong Yoo. I love Oh my Ghost for Entertainment value)
For LJG, he is a top act. I don’t know where he was hiding because I only discovered him in Moon Lovers. For me, his performance in this drama is a masterpiece. His portrayal of subtle yet fierce teen Wangso to growing to be a more complex Wangso to becoming an eccentric and obsessive Gwangjong was phenomenal. I found an actor who I can expect to deliver something new in every project. (Verdict: All hits except My Girl which only good for entertainment value & Hero- thought similar interpretation as Iljimae which is a drama that I love to bits.)

Yes, YWJ makes the whole project sound more promising. Even though I secretly hope to see him as Yeonsangun, YWJ probably fits Jungjong more with his softer aura; while Jin Gu has a stronger image that it makes him a good choice for Yeonsangun. PMY was fine in SKKS, so I'm looking forward to her in this drama.

Now, I'm in! Yeon Woo Jin is a far better actor than Lee Jin Wook imo. Lee Jin Wook's acting is boring. Dropped 'The Three Musketeers', 'Goodbye Mr Black' and barely managed to finish 'Nine Time Travels' for Hyungsik's sake.

I'm not the biggest fan of Park Min Young (coughDrJincough) but she's not one of those actresses that would turn me off from watching a drama. She redeemed herself greatly in Healer.

As for Yeon Woo Jin, I swear this guy is so underrated *sigh*

So agreee with Majara Yonghwa took the cake!!!!! Tbh Yoo In young and Yonghwa took the spot in The three musketeers with their amazing acting, and their caracter is more interesting in the drama!!! hey it's the version of D'artagnan and milady!!! I see sera you're biased with Jonghyun the fact that he's yonghwa bandmate, someone who don't like some actors/actress will always find bad thing about it,no matter their doing fantastic or so,it's just personal opinion or so you just can accept it yonghwa is way way way better than your bias

LOL did anyone see Yeon Woo-jin's cameo as the King in the movie Kim Seondal led by Yoo Seung-ho? Yoo Seung-ho plays a swindler and he infiltrates the palace to steal gold bars and in his route to the exit, he turned his eunuch garbs (I think) inside out, which became the King's dragon robe. He pretended he was the ruler so he could get away from the guards and he quickly went inside a room to hide and dang, it was the King's bathing place where the King happened to be there.

Yeon Woo-jin's brief appearance as the King was pretty impressive. He had such a nice, kingly voice and he showed command.

And he film is such a coincidence because Yoo Seung-ho will play the King in "Ruler: Master of the Mask" hehe.

But Yeon Woo Jin is definitely very capable and experienced enough in both modern and he was also in Sageuk before as well.
More important, I do feel the emotions he portraits in his acting. If you look at his eyes, you will see sorrows, hesitation, love, angry, worried, naughty, sexy, charming....all kinds of feelings.
So I believe he will do good again!
