Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 27-Apr. 2, 2017

With Defendant gone, the Monday-Tuesday lineup went through something of a change, with the viewership numbers being more evenly dispersed amongst the Top 3 broadcasters. Even Perfect Wife saw a rise in numbers, while corruption thriller Whisper premiered to a very strong 13.9% (thanks, in part, to Defendant’s departure). Now, Whisper looks to be in direct competition with Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, which just barely managed to edge out the newbie on Tuesday with 13.9%.

The ratings king of the middle of the week, Chief Kim, ended its run at a very impressive 17.2%. (I’ll miss you!) That’s going to leave some big shoes for Mystery Queen to fill next week, and we’re sure to see some numbers shifting about. Maybe Radiant Office, which has ever so slowly been climbing up, may benefit, or Saimdang, Light’s Diary, which dropped below double digits this week. Who knows?

As for the weekend, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon saw a slight drop, enough to take it out of the running to reach the coveted 10% for now. But there’s still time left, and the show’s garnering such buzz that their ultimate goal may not be too far away. Tunnel, on the other hand, rose considerably in its third episode, reaching 4.2%. I wonder if it’ll continue to climb, but that’s a question we won’t have the answer to until next week.

My guess is whisper gonne drop or stick to 13% and Rebel is gonna steal the ratings since it has rised so much after Defendant gone.

Can't wait to see what will happened to Wednesday/Thursday ratings, I think Radiant Office ratings might rise.

I don't think SW will reach 10%, maybe the last episode will?

Exactly, and that way is probably DVR or online viewership - that's something the basic ratings listed here doesn't discuss. For certain demographics, a huge online viewership is more than enough augmenting basic ratings.

Hoping to see more more increase for Perfect Wife. Underrated gem. Not expecting Whisper to get more than 15% at least for the time being. Rebel probably can achieve 15% at least, glad to see MBC drama finally has some good rating.

On Wed-Thursday, wishing all drama can get 2 digits. Is it possible?

On weekend, Father is Strange is Good show for weekend. I know some viewers complaint it is slow, but I don't mind. I don't know why some viewers said Ahn Joo Hee is the heart of the show, when his character annoyed me the most? Yes I do understand his loneliness but he is rude guy. I pity Mi Young and his manager need to put up with his childish acts although I do understand Mi Young did some mistakes too. Well very long way to go Actor Ahn for him to change to be better person.

I want to see more family interactions, and I love Hae Yeong-father little moments in the latest epi. But Hae Young ah, you will disappoint your father the most later when he learns you move in to your boyfriend's house. A stupid decision I must say. I agree she wants to move out, but living in the same house with a guy - what does it means?

The eldest bro remind me on Gabdol in Our Gabsoon, so much. Both are losers but this elder bro probably a little nicer than Gabdol.

I agree with you sera i found the actor annoying, he's harassing MY and ignored an old man knocking on his door pleading to talk to him, if i were byun appa I wouldn't bother coming back for that brat.

I am disappointed in HY too he family trusted her specially the father.

The irresponsible son deserves the beating from YJ he's been ignoring her calls since he learned she's pregnant that'll the worst thing a guy would do to his pregnant GF, its not like I like her or feel empathy for her since she's a bad person, but in this situation the man must take responsibility it's not only her fault.

I agree tht the actor's treatment of MY is unfair but with the dad I understand him. It's not easy fr him especially since he found out his "dad" has other kids. He' s probably thinking why he was abandoned whilst the other kids weren't. Daddy issues ain't easy ya' ll they can mess you up. You can see he has an inferiority complex because of it. My heart just aches fr him when he finds out the secret of his birth. Poor guy

You have a point, but can't he listen to him at least to know what he has to say since he was looking for him earnestly, i know he was disappointed in that first meeting but if i am in his situation I would be curious to know what he hasvto say and I would have many questions to ask, but maybe it's different for each one.

Maybe i am feelings like this because i know father byun is not his real dad and he wants to adopt him despite that so I sympathize with the father. Although i am wondering why can't he say that he's his friend son instead!

0

I think I can sympathy with him more, if he at least not that rude. I will be voting for the father to tell the truth. My predict is, Byun father is having some guilty feeling, and there is more to his past.

0

You are right. I wilk be watching him closely to see when will he grown up.

HY is too eccentric, she should know the boundaries. What I dont understand with her and JH, did they ever talked about their past, and the reason why she left him 8 years ago? Those two probably excited with each other now, but it won't last long.

I am still enjoying this drama regardless. I love both parents and how they communicating with each so far. Love when the mother approving HY to move out, but she said she will follow the father's decision. At the same time, she still trying to talk and discuss with him. It is similar in earlier episodes, when the mother was angered with Landlady, and she wanted to move out. Finally I get to see a spouse and parents who are communicating with each other rationally, instead of yelling and fighting.

How I wish the father will tell the truth that the actor is not his son, but he will adopt him. I want DNA works fast this time around.

The byun family relationship between parents and children is nice I love how they care for thier children. the morning routine is so nice, when the father follows his daughters to drink the smothie id adorable.
Things will starting to get chaotic when they find out about the pregnant GF and HY living with her ex, also when MY and Lee Joon start to have feelings for each other things are gonna get complicated soon.

0

I think I might drop this show after reading all the negative comments. I found Lee Joon's character tolerable at the moment but if he's turning out to be annoying, there's little else in the drama for me to continue.

In the beginning, I found Hye Young entertaining but now, not anymore because I cannot stand her with her ex-bf. I am still rooting for MY but she's not reason enough. I don't like the other two siblings and it's strange because I enjoyed these two actors' previous projects so much.

0

@Grapes yes I expected things to get more complicated in the next 10 episodes.

0

@ET I cannot encourage or discourage you to continue or drop it, lol because that's the standard of weekend drama. Even if you are dropping it now, in case you pick up again in the middle you won't missed so many things. ? HY and the PD are quite childish, I wished the writer didnt make them reunited so soon.

This show is having 20 episodes, so I think by now with half of the drama to go, everything started to fall at its place. I am not expecting it to become the the highest in Mond-Tues, i am just hoping it will increase a little bit more. This show also managed to get higher rating last week.

I am sorry that I have to disagree with most of what you said, because it feels like we are watching different drama. Maybe other viewers can convince or explain to you better.

One of the things that irritated me about the Perfect Wife that although Eun Hee is so obviously shady from the beginning (and it soon becomes clear that she's psychotic), everyone kind of just lets it slide. I dropped the show because it was trying too hard - everything was very heavy handed and the twists just got more and more ridiculous imo. It reminds me of a few jdramas, but generally they nailed the atmosphere and tension alot better.

It is because in real life we never expect to be caught in a conspiracy or confronting a creepy psychopath. I think it is natural for people to gave the privilege of doubt and let things slide. Its like "why would somebody like to harm me?" "There must be some reason behind her actions" kind of things. It may come easy seeing it in drama or reading such bizarre incidents in news and all but I think people always feel that they are somehow safe. I can relate to it because I always try to reason other people's actions and there are instances where I got it wrong. Anyway, I think Jaebok is smarter and intelligent than our average drama heroine and many other characters.
Viewers already know how deeply screwed a person is Eun Hee but the characters doesn't.

This x a million. It's easy for us to judge because we are watching a drama. But all I can think of is that if I were in Jae-bok's situation in real life and noticed her weird behavior, my friends wouldn't be telling me that she is obviously dangerous and to get away from her, they would be telling me I'm being paranoid and overthinking. (Saying this from experience.) Don't underestimate how strongly people believe that nothing improbable will happen to them.

1

It's so funny you mention The Village because I was quite interested in that drama and it's noirish feel. However, I am the opposite. I ended up dropping The Village because the mood was set very well, but I found the mystery lacking. I am so respectful that it tried something different even though it didn't work for me.

I'm much more preferring Perfect Wife because it is different and has such a good pace and has twists and turns that just work for me. Whether it will remain true in its second half....I guess I will have to wait and see.

I also like that for me the characters are more layered. They all have flaws, but I don't hate any of them...not even the loser husband or psycho woman (she obviously has issues). And to have such a strong but not perfect female in a drama...not a martyr, not a candy, not an over-the-top sassy gir, l I find very refreshing.

But, yes, I do think this drama is not for everyone. Oddly while others are in a slump, I'm finding all sorts of smaller dramas to enjoy.

Tunnel is doing great. Yay!!! And it is also well-deserved.
As for Do Bong-soon, I don't think it would reach the coveted 10%, especially since the plot moves in a crawling snail pace this week. The romance is totally swoon worthy, but it wouldn't be enough to make more people watch it.

Meh, for Do Bong-soon. I think I'm going to drop it after this week's episodes. The show was at its best with the bodyguard humor and misconceptions about who is gay.

All the other jokes involving the tertiary characters (especially the gangs and office workers) are increasingly terrible and cringe worthy. And the cop thriller wannabe mystery is so tonally abrupt and isolated from the main characters (until the end of ep 12) that it seems like its a totally different drama interrupting the show ID rather be watching. Anyways, I give up. Shame really, since PBY and PHS are really winning in their roles.

Yey for Tunnel. Out of the shows I am watching every week, it's the only drama that I am excited for the whole drama itself. Cast, story, acting, everything!

As for the other dramas, these are the reasons why I watch them:
1. Liar - Fresh cast. Green acting but a gem might be discovered here (Looking at Crude Play's Vocalist PSJ Look-alike)
2. Rebel - Chae Soo Bin and Honey. And Gil Dong's hyung story arc.
3. Whisper - this is Lee Sang Yoon and Lee Bo Young we're talking about
4. Radiant Office - The Precious Trio. And I totally loled at Woo Jin's persona outside office
5. Strong Woman - only for Park Hyun Sik.

So there.

I think they (playfully ?) meant that Monday-Tuesday dramas high ratings in 2016 were first started by SBS Doctors, and the Monday-Tuesday line up of consecutive dramas were highly rated since then. The last time, Monday-Tuesday drama that has been highly rated was Empress Ki, and since then dramas in that time slot were much less successful (in all broadcasting stations) until Doctors ;)

0

So its because of DOTS curse so any drama afterward cant be that successful?

0

There was one drama in 2015 higher than 20%, 2 dramas in 2014.

0

@c, seems like you can’t take a playful joke?? Monday-Tuesday slot was arguably quite successful after Doctors last year though, I think that was the OP’s point.

0

dont give credit when it has nothing to do with each other.

0

any of those drama has better quality and rating of doctors.

0

Megan got me.. what i meant was that doctors brought the audience back in the time slot and the others did a great job at holding them,i didn't say they had the ratings only because of Doctors but its a well known fact that dramas with high ratings help their follow up dramas ratings wise and Doctors was a huge hit whether you like it or not.

0

Doctors didnt bring audience back nor Goblin didnt push audience away. Doctors has nothing to do with anything.

0

So that’s why you got your panties twisted. You must have really hated doctors, eh? I’m glad that lackluster drama got so high ratings, because it’s really funny to see how months after that drama finished, people are still getting triggered and their panties twisted over that drama’s ratings :)

0

because goblin got so high rating so all tvn dramas are doing so bad right now.. thats how you said bring the audience back to the timeslot

0

or you should thanks dots because it bring back audience to the tv after two years with only 3 hits.

0

hahah..a lot of people are mad because Doctors got high ratings but personally i liked it and if you didn't like it then its okay but it did bring the audience period the way Teacher Kim did for Defendant, defendant to Whisper e.t.c.A lot of good dramas don't get high ratings due to people not even giving them a chance but if the previous drama had a big audience at least people get to give a chance to a follow up drama.

0

i dont care about doctors rating but claim because of doctors, moonlight, rdtk, defendant got high rating is beyond ridiculous. All the dramas has earned it way to the top, even if it show in any other timeslot it still get the rating. you try to credit something is not. doctors is no where near dots, and dots doesnt even try to claim anything because its too obvious no one need to say.

0

i dont care about doctors, period! but i love moonlight, defendant, rdtk. what you claim is an insult to those dramas, which quality wise, rating wise are all better than doctors.

0

doctors doesnt need to exist for those dramas to get the rating. rdtk, defendant will be nominated as the best dramas of the year, doctors wont even get close.

0

Doctors didnt bring audience for moon lovers, everything was in favor of the drama but the audience keep getting lower. So doctors push the audience away to another network?

Damn you can’t even take playful musing :). You don’t have to take everything so seriously. Is it so bad to say that Doctors brought good karma to Monday-Tuesday time slot? Or Goblin repelled ratings from Friday-Saturday slot? Everybody knows that Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, Romantic Doctor teacher Kim and Defendant were good dramas on their own. Maybe you detested Doctors, but it doesn’t mean it was a bad drama?? Just take a chill pill :)

0

hahahah....you take this way too seriously of course the quality of those dramas kept the people watching but still as Megan said it brought good kharma to the slot but yeah Doctors was not necessarily the only reason why those other dramas were hits. And I second on you needing a chill pill lol

Hey everyone! I am thinking I need to try out Chief Kim. I read the first recap and didn't think it would interest me. I see people commenting everywhere on DB how much they loved it, and I see the ratings are very high! I read the intro to the last episode's recap and I get the gist of why people loved it. Would anyone else like to share why this show was so wonderful, and how it may have ended up being a different show than what it seemed it would be in the beginning? Thanks! <3

Chief Kim is one of those shows that reading the recap per se will not working. You need to watch it to understand why it is fun to watch. Probably the first two episodes won't make you interested to continue but try at least until epi 4. Once you understand the concept of the drama, your ride will be much more fun. Namgoong Min is really great as Chief Kim, the bromance tbh much better than Goblin-Grim Reaper imho and one of those drama that used all characters including the minor ones to the fullest. We remember this drama not only for Namgoong Min or any other lead character, but we will remember the whole characters.

I dozed off during the first episode of Chief Kim that i was going to stop watching but I can't remember what exactly got me to stay the whole episode, then the fight between him and the gangsters happened at the end of the episode it was so funny, then I wanted to watch the next episode to see what will he do.

It's dealing in corruption in a comedic way, and things just happened with CK without he even try to do them he got cought up to being Mr. Rightous by accident he isn't even a good person to start with, that's what's funny and then he ended up being Mr. Righteous for real and changed from a corrupted to a good person.

every character is important in this show and has it's own charm from leads to supporting no one outshone anyone plus tye females in this drama are smart.

That's my take of the drama i hope it's helpful.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree that recaps cannot possibly show all the tiny details that make this drama so funny. I was personally drawn in by the hilarious ending scene of episode 1, so I'd say try watching at least 2 episodes to get a feel of its style.

The show doesn't try to be more than what it is: a drama about an unconventional character who turns a company upside down, but in the process discovers truths about himself and his calling to fight the corruption of the powerful who exploit the weak. However, each character is important and has their own little story-line, so there is a strong team element. There is also a wonderful conflict/relationship between Chief Kim and the 'villain' Seo Yul.

You don't have to think much while watching, just enjoy it and pay attention to details that make jokes even funnier: the music, the setting, the body language, the subversion of tropes (like the shower scene). It's an easy watch.

Overall, I consider it an office satire. It's full of parodies and meta moments (if you've seen Goblin you will be laughing out loud quite a few times). As a final note, the show has become memorable because of the cartoonish spoofs at the end of each episode, which apparently have resulted in a project to publish Chief Kim as a book.
