Bride of the Water God 2017 finds its home on Mondays and Tuesdays

Mark your calendars: Fantasy rom-com manhwa adaptation Bride of the Water God 2017 now officially has a spot on tvN’s upcoming schedule, and will be a Monday-Tuesday drama to follow soon-to-launch sci-fi drama Circle.

I admit to not quite knowing what to expect of this drama, because there are aspects I think I’d enjoy, mixed with some question marks. On one hand, the original premise is chock-full of interesting elements, such as its fusion historical bent, featuring a water god presiding over a drought-stricken land, whose residents offer up a bride as a sacrifice in exchange for rain. The tvN version, on the other hand, is updating the setting to modern-day Korea rather than Joseon and calling itself a spinoff rather than remake, which seems like a fairly big change. But on the other hand (if you had three hands), there’s nothing that says you can’t make an interesting drama in a new setting.

In the drama, Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) plays the water god, Ha-baek, with Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) playing his human offering-turned-bride, So-ah. Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) plays wind god Bi-ryum, who helps Ha-baek and is in love with the (literal) goddess played by Krystal (She’s So Lovable), Hye-ra, who in turn is in love with Ha-baek, who, of course, falls in love with heroine So-ah. In case you didn’t follow that, just imagine a character chart where the love arrows point from each person to everybody else. It’s basically that.

Bride of the Water God 2017 held its initial script read in March, then began filming shortly thereafter. It’s currently in the thick of production, and still has two months to go before its July premiere, which in dramaland is a decent chunk of time. Let’s hope it makes good use of its ample lead time and delivers on its promise of heightened production quality, which I feel safe entrusting to Misaeng and Arang and the Magistrate writer Jang Yoon-jung and PD Kim Byung-soo of Nine, Queen In-hyun’s Man, and Vampire Prosecutor. (To be honest, I still find the casting a little odd—not necessarily on an individual level but together as a whole—and would have had greater reservations if not for the producers; the strength of their credits does go a long way, though!)

Circle will premiere next Monday and will run for 12 episodes, which puts Bride of the Water God’s premiere around the first week of July.

I think it might be good for a change to take a base story and totally interpret it instead of trying to follow. In hindsight that teen vampire manwha that suddenly turned into a past life sageuk flashback was actually best in the middle where they were making new stuff up. So maybe they will come up with something really good for this.

It'a very pretty and cute cast but I'll have to be carefully optimistic when watching the show. I liked Nam Joo Hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy and Gong Myung was adorable in Individualistic Ji Young. As for actresses, they look beautiful, but I'm still a little skeptical of how they are going to act in this series. Other than that, I love the fantasy element of it.

I'm also intrigued by the synopsis. I remember reading a similar manhwa but it wasn't a webtoon so it wasn't the original material for this adaptation. Plus Nam Joo-hyuk so I'll gladly give it a try!

I'm checking this out mainly for the PD and writer combo. The cast isn't the most exciting and appealing bunch, sadly. Hoping that PD and writer weave something magical.

After individualist ji young it's quite clear to me at least that gong myung is a far better and versatile actor, compared to nam joo Hyuk. Though njh keeps getting lead roles but his acting is still quite stiff, and we don't see minute expressions like there in PBG,or YSH. I just saw gong myng in the short drama few days back, and I can tell it was not an easy character to play. As someone who's gullible but at a same time has no one to look up to, he quite appropriately showed his insecurities through the facial expressions. Anyway, coming back to the drama, his and Krystal's arc seems more interesting than shk and njh. This would be one drama with both the lead who has hard time giving expressions, so I'm not sure how I feel about that. Especially after Suzy's acting in uncontrollably fond. It's really upsetting when good stories get ruined by mediocre acting.

I think we should give them a chance before saying the leads have hard times with expressions, although I do agree with you on Suzy's acting in uncontrollably fond. it was quite bad.

I'm saying based on what I have seen from their previous projects.Shk and njh both are quite limited in terms of giving expressions. And yeah same goes for Suzy too. I know people don't like criticism, but as viewers we want to see good dramas, so rather than looking at comments as negative talks, it's more because I feel I dont want to see a drama with good potential being wasted. ?

The cast is so pretty! ? I definitely need a lot of pretty now that TLAHL ended. I love shoujo mangas (hence my love for TLAHL) so I'm looking forward to this drama a lot! The creds of the PD and writer give me a lot of expectation too! I loved NJH in WLFKBJ and GM in DS and WGM and the girls are beautiful! ?

From what I've seen of Nam Joo Hyuk's acting so far, I'm not impressed and honestly rather confused as to why he's suddenly getting lead roles? I think Gong Myung's gonna end up stealing the spotlight from him in this.

I'm sure they're all charming in their own ways and have been able to hold their own through other projects, but this is one show I'm not jumping at right away. I like the story, though. Will probably check it out anyway–out of curiosity. I really hope these actors turn out to be good and likable.

I will check this out because I liked NJH and GM in their previous projects, WFKBJ and Individualist JY. Its the lead actresses that I am cautious about. SSK was good in The Girl Who Sees Smell but heard that she can be inconsistent. I didnt particularly care for Krystal in The Heirs. Here is hoping that the drama will be good.

I don't know what to feel to be honest. As a avid reader of the original manwha my heart is crying from the changes and casting that is being made to the original work. I guess I'll have to keep my opinions low or else risk suffering through something similar to the change which happened on CITT...

Krystal? Nam Joo-hyuk? Really? This is a strange production, with a high-caliber crew but a young cast that's just fair-to-middling in terms of acting chops. Frankly, I don't see how this can be anything but glossy and rather shallow.

My sentiments exactly. Krystal and SSK are really pretty girls but they lack passion in their acting. But for NJH, i am going to watch this. I am just not sure if i will have it in me to watch it till the last episode. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I have mixed feelings about this drama. I am excited to see NJH again after WLFKBJ but at the same time i am kinda worried how he will portray his new role with a new actress. His chemistry with LSK was awesome and i credit that a lot to the over-all cuteness of the drama. But with SSK as his leading lady, i do not know. I like SSK. She is really pretty but her acting skills and facial expressions on-screen are so limited. And pair her with NJH who also have limited experience in acting, i have my doubts. Don't get me wrong, i like both of them because of their looks. They look great in pictures! But in dramas, they seriously seem awkward. I do hope though that with producers and a director that have good records behind them, the leads will be able to do much, much better for this show.

Wait. Is lm Joo-Hwan still in this? And, if he is, is he really being relegated to supporting role status? I love the writer and PD for this drama, but I'm worried for how it will survive the irrational resentment I often feel towards any drama that underutilizes him. This wouldn't be as much of a problem for me if the casting didn't feel slightly off already. I'm trying to be optimistic though!

Just checked! He's still in. Also Kang Ha-neul and Yang Dong-geun have cameos! Why do I love all of them more than the leads? It's strange because IJH and KHN were who I thought of for Ha-baek originally.

Excited for Gong-myung though. Some moments he gives me slight Jae-Hee vibes.

I just started watching Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Ju yesterday and have already binge watched the first 6 episodes (I'm loving it). I have not seen Nam Joo-hyuk in anything else but he is adorable in WFKBJ so I have a good feeling that he is cast. Not sure on the other actors though.

I'm planning to watch this for Joohyukie and Gong Myung! I have to admit that I would have loved it if it were the original Joseon period since I wanted to see how they would portray the gods. Not to mention, the pretty hanbok. I do trust this writer-producer team though. So, I'm curious how they plan to adapt the story to fit modern times. ^^

Oh I remember stumbling across this manhwa a couple of years ago! I was deeply into Goong at the time, but put it on my 'to-read' list for when I finished and never got around to it. I might have to have a peek again before this starts - though I'm intrigued by how they're going to make it modern.

Love the cast choices. Wonder how much of the plot will be changed to match it modern day Korea. Bummer as I was really hoping to see half naked ha-baek (or at least his night version).
