Floating petals under romantic moonlight in Bride of the Water God teaser

Oh my! Well, this certainly is pretty—the first teaser for tvN’s manhwa-based drama Bride of the Water God 2017 is out, featuring the main couple Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons). This new fantasy-romance drama is about Ha-baek, the egotistical god of water who deigns to descend to Earth where he meets the heroine So-ah, a doctor whose family has been fated to serve the water god for generations.

The teaser begins with a sketch of the original manhwa characters standing amidst gently falling cherry blossom petals, staring soulfully into each other’s eyes. Then slowly they turn into their real-life drama counterparts, Shin Se-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk, as she narrates: “Popular manhwa Bride of the Water God is reborn as a new spinoff drama. A divine-fatale romance to begin in July.”

Not seen in this first teaser are the others on the main cast: Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) who plays a hotel resort CEO who becomes the second suitor to the heroine, Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) who is a wind god that harbors a love for Krystal’s (She’s So Lovable) character, a minor water deity who is infatuated with Ha-baek. Whoa, that’s a lot of angsty one-sided love for one drama.

As a fan of the original source material, I can’t say that I wasn’t nervous when I first heard about this drama being a spinoff set in the modern era, especially because they were doing away with some of the most appealing aspects, namely rich historical context and elegantly embroidered hanboks. However, seeing the exquisite scenery of this short teaser helps me feel optimistic that perhaps the aesthetic beauty of the original will be preserved.

Upcoming Monday-Tuesday fantasy rom-com Bride of the Water God 2017 will begin airing on July 3.

Sometimes thise are the best shows. Little effort needed to watch. The kinda of show, where if I didn't need to actually watch cuz I gotta read the subtitles, I would do busy work and have it on the background.

I took a brief look at the manwha some months ago and I think you might be right. It was fairly simplistic but the illustrations were beautiful. That will be enough for me to watch during the first few episodes, but hopefully there will be a good dialogue script that develops strong characters and a semi-decent plot to sustain me through the rest of it.

I loved the manga (manhwa?) for its gorgeous hanboks and long flowing hair on everyone! Gonna miss that here. Still looking forward to this one..

Both of them have no resemblance of the characters in the manhwa, Habeak in the manhwa looks more manly, NJH looks like a teenage boy.

That's what I said about Nam Joo-hyuk when I first head the news. He doesn't give any manly vibes at all from what I've seen so far. I think he and maybe Gong Myung were the two people I felt didn't match up to their characters, as I imagined them in my mind's eye at least. I guess Krystal already has an image of being an ice princess in real life so her being casted as Mu-ra kinda makes sense, and Shin Se-kyung does seem like So-ah, the innocent wide-eyed part at least (this isn't my bias talking) but Nam Joo-hyuk is the biggest blank for me. I hope he proves me wrong. I hope this entire drama proves me wrong and makes me eat my words.

Manhwa Habaek is someone who should be played by someone like Kim Woo-bin, Lee Jun-ki, Kim Jae-wook, or a young Joo Ji-hoon.

Nam Joo-hyuk is very pretty but just not suited to a role that's anything like Manhwa Habaek.

I don't know, I don't care much about the appearances in live-adaptations. Unless it's completely different. Nodame is one of my favorite live-adaptation, and Chiaki doesn't look that much like the manga.

In this case, it's not the look but the vibe. Nam Joo-hyuk doesn't give off that mysterious, intriguing, sexy Ha-baek vibe. He feels exactly like his Jeong Joon-hyung character in Weightlifting Fairy.

He's still got that boyish charm which Habaek doesn't really have...

Required fields are marked *

Manhwa Habaek has such an otherworldly aura that sounds almost impossible to cast perfectly unless someone can dig up an unknown actor. Could have worked with Lee Jun Ki 10 years ago.

Then again, this drama seems to be a very loose spinoff of the manhwa and should have probably been just an original drama instead of taking the title Bride of the Water God.

Hardly anyone from the popular male actors give rough manly feel.

It's all about acting skill. Even a gay guy can look very manly if he a good actor. A very masculine man can look very feminine if he a good actor.

It's the skill that matters.

Oh yes and perhaps that's why they cast him as the Water God! hehe.. I don't know about anything but to me, NJH seems like an interesting bet.. He got that look (at least for me), yes. I don't know about him being manly or not but perhaps this is my bias so you see lol. I just hope, dearly dearly hope, that he delivers.

On the other hand, I have no idea about the female lead. I read Manhwa and her innocent gaze in the last picture just makes me root for her. I think, if she can deliver as much as it's suggested in this still, there should be no problem that's gonna follow.

I dont know why..but the teaser looks good though Lol(i know its only 15 seconds).and i think this drama will have a great scene.cinemathography and ost..AND For plot.If doing a cliche thing just DO It right.Because All drama that i watch it just all the same.If you watch action/Love/Law.In the end.The story either their will lose or win or dead or alive or happy or sad or both of them all combined Lol.so i think my expectation toward drama now is how can they achieve main goal(happy/sad) in the most unique way and the most logical thing.
Just do it with character and Acting that i can root for.tight storytelling..good OST(this is why i love kdrama in first place xD).Great Cinemathography(Well Kdrama now really 50:50 with hollywood now because their CG looks great for this past couple year).
So if This Drama Is cliche but they have that kind of thing. i'll make sure that i watch it :v

I looove this haircut on Nam Joo-hyuk, he pulls it of so well. Hope his acting will be as good as the hair :) I have high expectations after WFKBJ!

I really liked the manhwa (when I wasn't terribly confused as for who is who, lol) and I'm still a little bit unsure about adapting it into modern times (visuals, locations and clothing in the manhwa were stunning. And Soah's hair! It was so long and pretty!). Still, I'll definitely give it a shot.

I wish they had kept Soah's long black hair in the drama. But it looks like she's adopted the kdrama heroine look which is usually either light brown hair or shoulder length hair or both at once.

The comic turned reality reminds me of W and Misaeng style, me likey. I feel so conflicted, part of me is so keen to see it however the other part has a deep feeling it'll turn terrible. Though Nam Joo-hyuk doesn't look bad as a modern Habaek, I'm so glad they mentioned it's a spin off.

If anyone attempted the original it'll be so hard because the detailed costumes and scenery is what really brought the Manwha to life, if you don't have that then it's hard to be considered a original. But I think production level of Empress Ki is what it would look like if the original was adapted into a full Sageuk drama.

It would have been really expensive to do it for 16 episodes too. I do hope a movie adaptation comes out though.

I think an excellent sageuk costume designer (i.e., the hanbok designer of Moonlight) could've made some gorgeous period costumes for this drama. But ah well. What's done is done.

I'm pretty optimistic about this drama. The writer is behind Misaeng (critically and commercially successful) and Monstar (made newbies and idols shine!) PD directed Nine and Queen Inhyun's Man so expect amazing cinematography. I don't have high expectations but but it's not hopeless!

I recently finished watching WFKBJ for the 2nd time and for me, Nam Joo-hyuk is Jung Joon-hyung. I know nothing about the source material here, but it is going to take a stellar performance with a totally different feel for me to think of him otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I'll check him out here but am worried about my ability to have an open mind.
