Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 29-June 4, 2017

With almost all of the recent premieres adapting to the new two-episodes-a-day format, the ratings scene suddenly looks a lot more complicated. It certainly makes the numbers more interesting, since we can see shifts happening in the middle of the programming hour that we couldn’t see before—if someone didn’t feel like watching the first half of Lookout, for instance, they could tune in for the second (and undoubtedly more interesting) half. Options are good, right?

But since I got my tonsils ripped out of my throat yesterday and am currently hopped up on all sorts of pain medicine, I’m going to let the ratings speak for themselves this week. It’s not like we’re in a ratings drought, so there should be no shortage of trends to discuss. In the meantime, I’ll leave the talking to you fine Beanies!

Saw on a forum that even though SP's TV ratings are lower than Ruler's, it's receiving more love on Naver in terms of likes and discussions. Something like 20+k vs 8+k. See:
http://entertain.naver.com/tvBrand/5484393
http://entertain.naver.com/tvBrand/4571945

I wonder if that means anything at all. My guess is more of the youngsters are watching online?

It is only an indication that the method for collecting data for ratings is outdated. Right now it takes into consideration television viewership and not digital live streaming since it is difficult to eliminate the potential overlap between the population that use TV as their main medium for show watching and that which use the Internet for the same purpose.
Until Nielsen comes up with a new, updated and more accurate method of collecting data for viewership, we'll have to live with the possibility that the current rating system does not accurately reflect the viewership of Korean audience. We also have to live with the fact that the Naver and Nate userbase might have very little to do with the sample population whose TV viewing patterns are collected.

Thanks for shedding light on this! I noticed that they have some sort of actor/actress ranking every month and they take into consideration work, mentions from various sources, etc...I wonder why Nielson doesn't do the same. I guess there's no just no pressure on them...yet.

Ratings companies might not take it into consideration, but advertising companies do care about these types of "buzz" meter data points. I think you can take some consolation if a show you like has modest ratings but high buzz. (Besides the fact it is a indicator that the ratings could be underestimated and a lot of people are watching the show online.) At the very least, that usually means there will be good future acting and advertising opportunities for the actors/actresses involved.

but why do you think SP is indeed more popular than Ruler in any segment..

i am not watchign SP.and all the reviews i read were average.. the show apparently does not have a taut script (worse than competition)

The reason why this issue is brought up is because (the actor's) fans are indignant that the ratings supposedly do not accurately reflect the popularity of the drama. The general unbiased public clearly won't give a shit. Of course, it may be true that the method for data collection is outdated, but it can also very well be that SP just attracts a more vocal group of viewers. I don't think it'll make enough of a difference anyway. Chances are Ruler will still score higher ratings, whether or not they consider all the different avenues for streaming. For the record, I'm watching neither.

Despite the apparent weakness in writing, "Ruler" will rule because it's the kind of historical drama that would attract the older generation.
The writing and directing reflects on the ratings or it would've been over mid teens already.

If the rating system is not perfect then it has been imperfect for every single show on tv since AGB became the main source for tv ratings measurement.

For me I'm more interested in how Koreans viewers view their own tv shows than international viewers.
Sure it'd be nice to know but what country out there does that?

5

@kiara
True, Nielsen data collection method has been imperfect for a long time. Unfortunately I don't know the specific procedure of data collecting in Korea, so I cannot weigh in my two cents re. methodology.

Guys,
The thing is the general viewerbase, including international audience, don't always have access to or basic understanding of how the Nielsen rating system works. Many have mistaken the userbase on Naver and Nate for and taken their reactions as representative of the whole Korean audience, and some even link them, on many occasions, with the sample population on which Nielsen data are collected on, which can be inaccurate. Hence my last sentence: 'We also have to live with the fact that the Naver and Nate userbase might have very little to do with the sample population whose TV viewing patterns are collected.'

The outdated data collecting method should be the concern of first and foremost the companies seeking to buy advertisement slots on live TV and the broadcasting channels, not us viewers. I don't know when it became relevant to the public though, since obviously not many of us work in market research to make sense of the viewing patterns. The ratings are just the end results; it doesn't come with research implications often expected in reports. To make full sense of it, we need access to the statistical tools and results, as well as what constitutes the sample population size. Without these data, the ratings can be interpreted in very different ways and some can deviate from their intended meanings quite a lot.

Ruler is doing very well on Drama Fever and the comments are from mainly young people. I started watching SP but dropped it because I was bored. I like Rule a lot and can see why the ratings are so high. I guess if a person is a fan of SP, that ratings would bother them.

What reviews are you talking about lol. I don't get the charms of reviews from different sites since opinions gets personified and then there are people who get biased. A lot of people like rulers because they are a fan of yoo seung ho, also I followed the latest recaps of rulers here on db, and the reviewer herself mentioned how the script isn't that tight altogether.
I think we regard different shows considering our personal pov, so I won't just write off any show just cause I Don't like it personally. First off, I don't like rulers much since I also felt the story is kind of all over the place, too many things jumbled together..but that's my opinion of the show, I could be wrong too. On the other hand, I have been watching SP and the script is getting better week by week, anyone who has watched 'I remember you' would notice the signature of the writer here and there. And the chemistry is off the chart, needless saying. Why the rating of rulers is higher? That's obvious, just cause Koreans love their sageuks. It has been this way all these time lol. Regardless the rating though, I would say rating success don't define a drama's success overall. Plus, SP clicks more to the younger audience I guess, compared to rulers which is sageuk and may be older generation loves it more. But as I was saying, rating can't define whether a drama is a success or failure. Like I loved beautiful mind and it fared so bad on charts, but it is one gem of a show. I think anyone who has watched the drama will admit. Same goes for I remember you too. It got merely 5-6%, but it was soo good! Lol anyway, so I won't just say that SP in any way deserves any less praise.

I don't think it is taken for granted that a saeguk will always do better than other genres just because "Koreans love their sageuks." Just look at the recent saeguk, Rebel. No doubt Defendant had a head start of one week but Rebel was never a close competitor.

I may be wrong but I think star power has a more weightage than genre or quality especially in the premiere rating. I am under the impression that Korea loves Yoo Seung Ho. In this instance, it seems that YSH + Kim So Hyun star power > Ji Chang Wook + Nam Ji Hyun. If Suspicious Partner stars Lee Min Ho + Jeon Ji Hyun, I think it will beat any saeguk flat.

By the way, I am not a fan of any cast in the 3 Wed-Thurs dramas. I also happen to love the drama with the lowest rating.

on script - i clearly said in comparison to the rival show.. did I make a comment that ruler has super taut script?

And if you think every other review is not worth a dime.. then opinion of people shouting from the rooftop that SP is a good show is dirt as well.. that would come off as a desperate attempt to generate publicity for a less than mediocre drama.. wouldn't it.. so if you don't want your opinions to be derogated, don't ridicule others' opinions..

you think b'ful mind was good.. i had to drop the show by ep 7 .. what you like can't dictate quality.. someone else will feel boys over flowers is good and had ratings.. some may not agree.. some may think healer was good.. some may not..

Ratings have nothing to do with quality.. ratings is a commercial index.. and this industry is not for charity..

if public is incapable of enjoying "quality" products, then that is public's fault not the dramas.. the agencies have to make money to feed their families.. anything that draws in money will get the attention.. and there is nothing wrong with it.... niche dramas should market and position themselves for the niche market and make money there..thay way both drama and viewers and agencies will get appreciated for right targeting to right userbase and public's encouragement driving content..

But you can not crib like a juvenile baby everytime your shiny toy does not win accolades..

Lastly on methodology:
For any statistical research (that too in commercial professional context), especially in this case, quota sampling is relevant... and in that sense, even if sample size is "low" (FYI 30 is min that they need to have).. they would have a much better rating than your or anyone's else misguided research based on random or one channel specific sampling (that too of comments without knowing demographics of the userbase...)

@outofthisworld yeah I think I pretty much said the same thing, Koreans love Yoo Seung ho. But rebel didnt fare that bad rating wise. It hadd a solid 12% average each week. Rulers has 12-13% which sometimes park to 14-15, so rebel can't be called a pure failure. Whisper had almost 16-18% raring I think, and yeah part of it has to do with star value and the fact that it's a law based drama.. I personally thing sometimes it's pure luck as well. Sometimes audience don't like the main couple so the dramas don't appeal to them.

@alasecond wow no reason to gang up here on db just cause you don't agree with my opinion. Be more moderate with your word choices..if you could. I was simply giving my opinion..doesn't mean you can speak in demeaning manner. I think I'll refrain from commenting further on this.

I am a huge fan of both Yoo Seung Ho and Ji Chang Wook. Yes YSH is very popular in Korea and both are very popular internationally. Yes, star power does help but I think people in Korea will like what they like regardless of the lead actor. Rebel, was one of my favorite historical dramas and I still miss it today. Personally I check the ratings just for shits and giggles, but it doesn't bother me one way or the other which drama has the highest ratings.

Why is SP more popular than Ruler? Because Surplus Princess has Song Jae Rim and his apple butt in it and Ruler doesn't.

Exactly. Until they figure it out, I wish the shows' distribution contracts would require streaming sites to release weekly data on the number of unique views of each episode. (By this I mean only include one viewing in the total count, if a user watches an episode multiple times.)

I'm sure they're already tracking it as it'd be the only way the show could calculate the right amount of PPL income. I can't see why releasing it would be a problem.

People are ridiculous to just look at a page and draw conclusions... without even attempting to understand what factors must be considered before true numbers for digital audience are put.. ofcourse they can come out better for a less popular show.. or they may reconfirm that less popular is indeed less popular

Although I love a lot of dramas which suffered low ratings, I still look to the Nielsen or TNmS ratings as the official viewership data. Naver or Nate can only be an indicator of most discussed or liked on internet which isn't the same thing as viewership.

Even where buzz is concerned, I am not sure if those raves on the likes of Naver translate to better opportunities for the actors. I still see a strong link between ratings and career opportunities for the actors.

But not everyone that watches dramas go to forums to discuss them. In other words, a drama could have a lot of viewership but the viewers are watching and then getting back to their real lives and not going to forums to discuss it. A buzz on naver about one drama does not mean another drama is not as much liked and could be liked even more. It's just like people that leave reviews about vacation resorts etc. Some give a review but most don't even if they had a great time. Naver is not an indicator to me about how popular a drama is over another drama. As I mentioned before, Ruler is doing very well on Drama Fever along with other on line sites and basically the viewership is just as high as the ratings in Korea. I have to agree with the ratings shown here.

Ratings and fervor of discussion aren't always related. Even just looking at this site, you have dramas like Healer or TLAHL that have a disproportionately massive amount of comments compared to their mediocre/low ratings.

I don't think ratings are "outdated" at least. A small group of dedicated fans to some actor/actress can easily fill up Internet comments sections, but a large group of steady viewers are the ones driving up the ratings, even if they're less vocal or passionate about the show.

Thing is, the sample population on which data are collected is not as large as many people think, and its representativeness has always been questioned within the field of marketing research itself.

First, marketing research needs to go hand in hand with social research, and it needs to be updated every year. For example, the population of a country can change from being dominantly 'old' to 'young' in a decade. Within the same decade social movements such as fights for LGBT rights or feminism can change the demography of a country quite drastically, such as leading to more single-parent families or singles. Then the change in income can also lead to different viewing patterns as people may own more than one TV set in their home. For a sample size to reflect this change in a country's demography and to be accurately reflective of the general population, it has to take all of these into account. At least right now Nielsen's data collecting method is ages old and it relies on the dated assumption that families will entertain themselves on the same and single TV set in the house. I've done several marketing research projects on TV viewing habits and they all require recording viewing habit on one main TV set. Many projects even eliminate households with more than one TV set in the house.

I think the networks are aware of the demographic shift that's why there are efforts to e.g. upload YT videos by clips instead of the entire episode to cater to younger generation who prefer watching just the snippets of the programs. OR brands place advertisements in VIU or other online platforms instead of the traditional media. I used to work in an advertising agency and even for us, when chosing programs for targeted viewers, we didn't just rely on Nielsen ratings. Nielsen also has the Arianna tool for years, right? We used the Arianna software to categorize media consumption and get more specific data on consumption based on age, gender, location, hours, etc.

Many brands right now tap non-traditional media, so I think the advertisers and the broadcasting stations are also adapting to that changes even if Nielsen's ratings method is old. They still use those ratings as reference, but they are also acknowledging other ways to measure viewership.

You're right that the broadcasting stations are likely aware of the demographic shift, and the same can be said for advertising agencies. However their awareness doesn't reflect in the Nielsen ratings themselves, which are the sole point of discussion in my post. I didn't say that the ratings would translate to advertising agencies' and several networks' understanding of the targeted market.

My criticism is only concerned with the fact that the Nielsen ratings currently only apply to a segment of the Korean population who use TV as the main medium for entertainment. Even within this population its representativeness can still merit challenge. Sadly only the raw numbers are presented to the public and by then they have lost a lot of their context, that's why many viewers keep mixing up Naver/ Nate userbase with Nielsen sample population, or take the Nielsen ratings as representative of the whole Korean population, which people working directly within marketing research and advertisement may know well to be possibly far from the truth.

This is certainly very informative. However, when these issues are brought up, it's usually fervent fans feeling upset that the shows they like are not getting enough recognition. It just sounds very sore-loser-ish since they aren't driven by actual concern about the limitations of these measurements.

On the topic of improving the "accuracy" of such statistics though, I think that companies such as AGB Nielsen have no incentive to conduct the research you suggested. I'm not exactly sure how they profit, but unless the broadcast stations want to pay more for it, it's not going to happen. Also, odds are that the ratings will drop rather than rise which is to the detriment of the broadcast stations. On the other hand, it's extremely easy to collect streaming statistics for SBS/MBC/KBS by monitoring online viewers. They can present it as a totally separate measure and it's up to the companies to decide what to make of it. As for Naver comments and views mentioned by the OP, I think they pretty much mean nothing. The CPI (?) already takes into account those. They also clearly overlap with viewers watching through traditional media and viewers streaming online. And if they don't belong to either group, they are irrelevant since they aren't the ones watching the advertisements anyway.

They have implemented changes to their collection method in response to past criticism though. Their credibility is the incentive for them to change, and they will do it when their clients complain or when there is criticism of their system in business journals. How the ratings change will unlikely affect the broadcasting stations per se generally speaking, but they sure will have implications on the continuation or termination of individual shows.

Anyway, the bottom line of my various posts in this subject is that the ratings presented to us are just raw results; the full reports which consists of more reliable interpretations of these data are only available to Nielsen's clients. Without contexts, these numbers don't usually speak for themselves and don't even make much sense. I just hope to bring this up to attention whenever I can, so that viewers will be less negatively affected by these numbers.

I'm not 'fan of the actor' you're directing at, but I wish rather than generalizing, we talk about things as not to hurt anyone with our choice of words. Say if I love a drama and it's not doing good rating wise, is it bad to talk about it? I don't get why so though. As drama enthusiasts I think anyone has equal right to express opinion or the fact that they wanted more appreciation of the show. Saying they are losers or that they don't understand how rating system works you are making assumption about all of the people who are fan of the show, which I find quite upsetting and disturbing personally lol.

Sour grapes is exactly what I was thinking too. SP fans are not happy that Ruler has higher ratings.

0

@maskros that was an interesting read! I didn't know rating count works that way. Plus at the end this reminds me of the time we would be listening to mp3s online instead of buying the CDs. I mean at this time, we don't have to watch shows on TV since everything is kind of available online. Besides, instead of tuning to a show live I would rather binge watch it at my convenient time. Obviously that doesn't help bringing revenue for the TV producers but shows are being watched with or without TV. Adult people or older generation are more into live watching shows cause they still prefer the traditional viewing method. That's the general idea I'm getting from your posts. But then I could be wrong too.

Only God knows how much I cried during the last 2 epi of Chicago Typewriter. Thank you for being soooo amazing throughout the 16 epi 😭😭❤ Now I want prequel for this drama on their 1930s, maybe as Yoo Ah In's comeback drama after he finishes military service, and they can insert a bit part of this version and the sequel at the end- because we want to see their present lives as well. Amazing script with great editing, and amazing casts
as well with top notch acting. Even this drama is not a hit, I am grateful that at least the last two epi still above 2%. Thank you again, Chicago Typewriter ❤

I was blown away by the two last episodes.

Just wonderful. Love love love and Many thank Yous Chicago Typewriter ^^

Is it too much to dream to see Lookout being the winner on Mon-Tues slot, so MBC will be winner for both slot? Personally I think Lookout is the best out of the three, in my opinion it explained the rise of the rating in Tues' slot. Not saying Fight My Way don't deserve it, but so far the only good thing is the chemistry between the OTP which is not sufficient for me to stay until the end. I enjoyed it, but I don't love it. I will keep watching for now, but it isn't my priority.

Seven Day Queen rabid fan reporting!

How about Seven Day Queen being the winner for Wed/Thur slot so that KBS can be the winner for both slots?

Just kidding 😛 😜😝 Don't get me wrong, I like Lookout a lot and at the moment, it's better than My Sassy Girl for me. However, I am not watching Fight My Way so I can't give my opinion on who's the best. As for Wed-Thur slot, I'm not watching Suspicious Partner so same constrain applies. But for sure, I think Seven Day Queen is a far better written and directed drama than Ruler.

Don't get offended beanies if your beloved drama isn't mine. My personal opinion don't make even a wee dent on the ratings.

My heart is so torn. I want Seven Day Queen to go up, but I want Suspicious Partner to rise also. They both deserve higher numbers and I keep wishing I could take a little bit from Ruler to help them out, haha. It's such a bummer when your favs are the losing ones.

Actually, whenever my show is losing in the ratings, I like to at least be able to see the netizen reactions, but I haven't been able to find any for Seven Day Queen. Does anyone know what the response was like for the first 2 episodes?

I also have to disagree that the only good thing about Fight My Way is the romance. I'm in the same stage of life as the lead foursome so this whole second coming of age stuff is really accessible for me. I think both Lookout and Fight My Way have their strengths and deserve to do well in the ratings. I'm hoping Lookout will surpass My Sassy Girl, but that might be too much to hope for. I admit, I'm happy with Fight My Way winning because I want more slice-of-life, coming-of-age romances in dramaland.

The reception for the first episode of SDQ is very positive, especially for LDG's acting. I think it's the same for episode 2, although I think some were also put off by Chae-kyung's country bumpkin accent. Take this with a grain of salt as I'm only relying on Google/Naver translate since none of the netizen reaction blogs have translated SDQ articles.

I also like Seven Day Queen. The actors and script look promising.. I like to watch Ruler because of YSH and KSH and I must admit that SDQ's plot and the way the story goes seem more interesting and not that boring atleast for me.. Also, Fight For My Way is a must watch! Kyaa, the storyline is just the exact mixture of fun, reality, and so on. The Kim Ji Won and PSJ are so good too. Their chemistry is just great. Hope their ratings continue soar high, perhaps until 30% just that we can see how they would react to the director's promise (albeit jokingly) of marriage between KJW and PSJ.

You can dream, but ultimately, the decision is in k-netz' hands. Personally, I enjoy Fight My Way a lot and came to care for all 4 leads equally, I don't necessarily need the romance (I'm a romance junkie btw) and I could watch it for their friendship alone. To be honest, this show is a bit too slice of life for my taste, but I could relate with all the characters and came to root for their characters' growth, that being said, I'm rooting for their position in leading the time slot as well.

On Wed-Thu time slot though, I'm leaning towards Seven Day Queen, sadly the ratings haven't reflected much, but the story is executed so well for the pilot week. I'm hoping this one gets a decent rating at least.

I saw a Duel special episode out a few days ago - does anyone know if this needs to be seen for the show? Couldn't see if it was just a behind the scenes or a prequel or a minisode type thing.

It is 22 minutes episode with introduction to the characters, with 4 main leads sit together and discuss about it. There is also behind the scene a bit. For me, it is not must seen, but it is good to watch the 4 leads talking.

I watched 2/3 of the first episode and stopped. I don't really know what to say except that I am mildly disappointed. It wasn't because my baby hardly appeared(okay, maybe it was! a little). It was kinda boring and though I hate to admit it, I was bothered by Kim Jung Eun's face.

I'm on the verge of giving up now. I've watched just a little of the special episode where there is a scene with her shouting at someone in a car, and I noticed the small smile on her face. I was a little bothered by it but went into the first ep anyway, and it looks like she's got that small smile in almost all of her scenes. I'm not sure if that's how the character is supposed to be, but I must say I find it distracting.

So i actually just completed the first episode as i am typing this and i have to say kim jung eun's face is the worst part of the show. I think duel is going to have to rely heavily on yang se jong and jung jae young's acting because as of now they're the part of the drama that has me interested but hopefully the plot picks up can't say the same for kim jung eun's face though.

I thought the plot sounded interesting so watched the first two episodes. I found myself tuning out a lot, but by the end of the second ep, it looked like we were getting into the nitty gritty a bit more. Yang Se Jong is already doing a bang up job with his two characters but I think if I didn't like him so much, I'd probably be dropping the drama at this point. Definitely agree about Kim Jung Eun.

So I wasn't the only one. I don't want to judge an actress just because she has PS done but this time, it's messing up the way she acts.

I can't recognize her so I went to google and found out that I've actually seen her before in Ohlala Couple. I didn't complete the drama but I remembered her being quite decent in it. At least her face wasn't frozen.

Like @maskros and @elle1 pointed out, the perpetual smile or smirk confuses me as to what the character is trying to display.

*sigh* We have Jung Jae Yong and Yang Se Jong for goodness sake! Aside from Kim Jung Eun, I hope the story picks up in ep 2.

You are right, first I thought her nose is not that bad but then they showed her profile and it looks like it is shaved off :O Other than the nose, I see the bigger problem in botox. She is not the first actress who can barely do any facial expressions because of the botox shots. I know they want a youthful, wrinkle free face but it is distracting when their eyebrows can barely move.

Actually when I first read about the 2-episodes a day format, that was what I exactly thought that it may be complicated but it can show the viewer's shift in the middle of the program because people tend to lose interest in some parts. Although I can't think what else may be gained from knowing about the viewer's preference.

From what I read from Korea Times, the split episodes are mainly to circumvent current Korean broadcasting laws which prevent public broadcasters from running mid-show commercials. By splitting the episodes, broadcasters can now reap the financial rewards of commercials aired at the "end" of each "episode" - basically, the advertising rate for commercials aired mid-show is more expensive than if the commercial aired at the end. Broadcasters can also possibly charge more for each "episode" for the video-on-demand version because now they can treat the single 70-minute episode as two 35-minute episodes and charge accordingly.

MBC rationalised the change as viewers preferring to consume shorter-length content through mobile devices rather than full-length content on TV. SBS just treated the split episode as two single episodes, thus making it okay to run commercials at the end of each one.

Me too, I hope the lower ratings don't stop them making different and/or quality dramas. It would be sad if we didn't get another Chicago Typewriter or Circle just because it didn't rate high enough for them. I compared them on the basis of genre. Similarly i put 4 action series though they belong to different telecast system. Ruler had to be rating winner and so it is. SP has already build its viewership so can't make the call of Queen being a strong competition until the 3rd week of june.

I actually thought SP might benefit from the competition between Ruler and SDQ since these two are both saeguks. If I don't like saeguk or prefer something lighter, wouldn't I automatically turn to SP? I also thought viewers of Mystery Queen would choose SP instead of the two saeguks. However, SP did not gain as much as expected. Overall, the total viewership of Wed-Thurs slot fell. I guess Korean viewers just watch less TV.

So, idk what I was expecting with The Best Hit in terms of the "variety" part, but I must say, I loved it. And after all the reviews saying that the drama didn't deliver on the "variety" aspect, I realised variety, at the end of the day means delivering laughs, and it can be done in a number of ways - just like how there are so many variety shows out there, and they all have such varied concepts, but still end up making us laugh our hearts out (a dad trying to change a diaper for the first time shouldn't be that funny!).

The Best Hit has a sitcom-y vibe with all these jokes and puns and not to mention, all the meta jokes. And I remember Yoon Shi-yoon and Cha Tae-hyun once referring to it as a sitcom on 1N2D. I didn't give it much thought then, but now that I think about it, I guess that's the route they're taking on this one.

I'm still going to give them major points for not butchering a beautiful show like Seven Day Queen.

The Best Hit is, at least, the kind of show that won't suffer much from the split, given that it's a sitcom. Even Fight My Way could have survived it, though I'm certainly glad it didn't have to.

I'm so glad they didn't split an epic, sweeping romance like 7DQ. I never thought I'd be be so grateful just to get some normal-length drama episodes. If KBS can keep this up, at least for the weekdays, they'll actually have some serious points in their favor.

Even though it's always the case that you wish a show you enjoy had better ratings, I have to say I think Man to Man is holding up quite well in the ratings. It has the highest cable ratings right now and the competition for the Friday-Saturday 11pm slot has become instense. That said, the competition has become so intense, I wonder if JTBC needs to rethink that slot. The cable channels have always tried to pick out a slot where they have no or little competition from other scripted shows. However, Man to Man is now competing directly with The Best Hit on Friday and Saturday and Good Thief Bad Thief on Saturday (for the 1st half hour). It also has the misfortune of being up against one of the buzziest variety shows on Friday night in Produce 101.

I worry how this will affect the follow-up show to Man to Man, Women of Dignity. As far as I know it's airing same days/times. From a branding perspective, I think it makes sense for JTBC to carve out one time slot to call its own, I just don't know if I think the Friday-Saturday 11pm slot will stay viable. JTBC started with a bang in that slot with SWDBS, but all this competition I described started after that show ended. I guess we'll see when Women of Dignity airs, but I would be thinking about these things if I was JTBC.

Last week, I predicted 9% for MSG and 6% for SDQ. Never have I been so sad that I guessed correctly.

For premiere week, I think ratings are mostly based on anticipation, hype and star power, not so much actual quality of the drama. With regards to MSG, I went for a single digit despite most people speculating a figure slightly over 10%. The drama had attracted negative response and bad publicity since the day it was announced. I don't think the Koreans liked the idea of their beloved movie remade. The casting fiasco made it worse. I was also surprised to see a negativity surround Oh Yeon So. Thus, I think 9% is not too bad considering all these factors and is probably attributed to the fact that Joo Won and OYS are still reasonably popular in Korea. I am less optimistic about next week's numbers because this drama premiere had the worse knetz response ever. We shall see how that translates to viewership.

For Seven Day Queen, I guessed 6% because I didn't think Lee Dong Gun, Park Min Young and Yeon Woo Jin are the type of actors to attract a opening viewership of over 10%. I lowered it further due to strong competition from another saeguk, Ruler. Both SP and Ruler have entered into their 4th week and already established their viewer. base.

I was hoping that people would get a wind of how good Seven Day Queen first episode was and tune in for the second. Imagine my disappointment when the numbers fell instead. Now, I can only hope that it took time for people to catch up and for the numbers to rise next week. Usually if the rating doesn't increase much by the 2nd week or so, it will stay about the same throughout barring things like an exit of a strong competitor.

Maybe 7DQ ratings fell on the second day because of the romantic developments in SP? (I'm not watching SP but I've heard a lot of squeeing over the latest episodes). Maybe the appearance of the adult actors next week will give 7DQ ratings a boost. It's already a better show than MDBC imho.

China pulled their backing from the Korean drama industry so to make money, the networks have split the traditional 1-hour episode into two halves so that they can put commercials in the middle. So you get one half hour episode, a bunch of commercials, and then the next half hour episode.

Being Ruler/ SP/ 7DQ in the same time slot, I don't understand why does Suspicious Partner's rating is lower that Ruler? How is that possible? Even though I watch both of them, actually the three of them because I started 7DQ, and Ruler's history is going down a hill. There are so many things done wrong, some of them involve acting. YSH is doing awesome, but it had a lot of potential it still has.

On the other hand, SP is really good, and the acting is great JCW and NJH have strong chemestry, and last episode that last scene OMG.

And I think 7DQ is going to fulfill that sageuk longing I hoped Ruler would, I was hooked by ep 1, and since it has a real story as plot it would be interesting to watch. I love when a drama starts with end and we have to find out they got to that point.

Because that is your opinion but not the opinion of others. I understand completely why Ruler has high ratings and I think the drama deserves it. Obviously others feels the same way. That is how it is possible.

In korean, for the actor and the staff from the drama the most important thing is the rating is good. It make them appreciated.
