Gong Seung-yeon, Lee Jong-hyun’s My Only Love Song gets picked up by Netflix

For those of you who regularly check Netflix’s Korean drama offerings, you might have seen this show pop up in the list: My Only Love Song, starring Gong Seung-yeon (Circle) and Lee Jong-hyun (Orange Marmalade), has been picked up by the online streaming giant and is now available for you to enjoy.

I had actually forgotten about this drama since there hasn’t been much news regarding it since last fall, but it looks cute and the posters remind me of Hwarang. Gong Seung-yeon plays the snooty top star heroine, who somehow ends up time-traveling to Goguryeo, where she meets the money-crazy Ondal, played by Lee Jong-hyun. Together, they’ll find love and meaning beyond money and status that they thought were so important.

My Only Love Song sounds like a light-hearted, silly take on the classic Korean fable Princess Pyeonggang and the Fool Ondal, in which the titular princess grooms her timid husband Ondal into one of the greatest generals of Goguryeo. Princess Pyeonggang does make an appearance in the show, played by Kim Yeon-seo (Retrial), but she and Ondal won’t have a loveline, obviously.

The 20-episode fusion youth sageuk completed shoots last year, but had some trouble finding a platform after a deal with a Chinese streaming service fell through, so I’m glad My Only Love Song is finally available to viewers, in all its campy glory. PSA: For those of you beanies in Latin America (except for Brazil, don’t ask me why), you’ll have to wait for a couple more weeks for the show, which will become available on July 1.

Watching Gong Seung Yeon in Circle right now and she is fantastic. From a lifeless alien to a typical college student, she is rocking both roles. Although I did not hear about this show, its good that it is now available on Netflix.

You'll love GSY more as an actress. She pulls off the arrogant talkative "top star". Totally different from Jungyeon/Byul/Bluebird. My Only Love Song is funny and refreshing.

It's so quirky and silly, it took me a few eps to get into it but I enjoyed it overall. Love the cast and premise, and the eps are only 30 minutes long, which is much appreciated.

Y'know, I've recently realized how refreshing it is to watch a show for 30 minutes vs. 1+ hr. It's an easy, breezy watch. Of course, there's still some dramas that I'm grateful were 1+ hrs long (ehem, my love, Goblin) so I can bask in all its glory, but generally speaking, 30 minutes is just right! ??

I think I actually appreciate some of the newer shows being split episodes now because I ~feel~ the show moving w/o being too draggy and in no time, I realize part one is done and I move right on over to part two! It's an illusion, but hey, it works.

I feel the same way about the new split episodes! I have seen people complain that they ruin the flow of the show but I actually don't mind because it makes it go by quicker for some reason and I don't feel the drag. It can be a good thing for shows with pacing issues.

I agree! I was sooo against it before but I've completely changed my mind. It's nice to have a breather and it makes it feel like the show has a fast pace. I actually think I'm more willing to watch certain shows because of it (case in point: Ruler, if you're reading those recaps you know what I mean by that) and it's less daunting to finish a thirty minute two parter then a one hour long show. I welcome the change now! (Yes I eat all my old complaints!)

Definitely watching this when I have the chance. I feel like I need something short, light and wacky that I can binge in the midst of shows like Circle, Duel, 7DQ

I would watch a serious sajeuk about that fable to see a strong woman turn her weak man into a general. I'm riding a feminism wave right now because of Wonder Woman.

While I'm happy that Netflix is picking up Korean shows, I'm not happy about how they keep putting the label "Netflix original" on them, which is a misleading label and is conflated with other "Netflix original" shows that are produced and written by people at Netflix. Korean dramas are not and I want credit where credit is due.

I don't think its overly misleading though.
Netflix Original shows in general aren't written or conceived of by people at Netflix though. Even when the show is an original production commissioned by Netflix, the company is largely just the distributor and the actual original content was conceptualized, pitched and then made by independent production companies. For example, these are the production companies for hits like House of Cards (Media Rights Capital, Trigger Street Productions, Wade/Thomas Productions, Knight Takes King Productions); Orange is the New Black (Lionsgate Television, Tilted Productions); Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Little Stranger, Inc., Bevel Gears, 3 Arts Entertainment, Universal Television). They don't include Netflix, who is noted as the distributor and original network. It's similar to network television.

The production company for this show is FNC Add Culture with Netflix (and Naver and Sohu) as the original distributors, so I don't see a huge difference.

but then, how do people distinguish between the true original Netflix shows (meaning the ones where they have the rights to cancel, like Sense 8 and The Get Down) and shows likes this and Man To Man? Like, Peaky Blinders is called a Netflix Original too, but it's BBC who has the final say in canceling or renewing it

Yes they were and their chemistry was off the charts that I legit think they did like each other during WGM. I'm pretty stoked to know they did a drama together! I hope there is a kiss scene! Jong Hyun will get his kiss at last! This reminds me of Song Jae Rim and Kim So Eun being WGM partners and then working on a drama together.

GSY is really fantastic but I like her more in Circle ?
LJH is a bit lacking for me, some of the romance scenes looks like he and GSY really awkward. But I totally love Moo Myung ( Anh Bo Hyun) even though he speaks only 10 words (or less).

I actually marathoned this last night. It starts off very campy, off the top, and ridiculously cheesy but then once feelings get mixed into the equation I actually found myself hooked. The leads have incredible chemistry I kid you not. Of course I totally blame Lee Jong-hyun and his bedroom eyes and smirky mouth for this! Surprisingly, I found Gong Seung-yeon to be very brash and extremely off putting in the beginning which I blame entirely on the way her character is initially written. But she, and the story, grows on you till you are actively left rooting for this couple to beat all odds and just be together in the end.

My Only Love Song exceeded my expectations especially in kissing scenes. I didn't expect that viewers will get to watch 5 hot kissing scenes. I thought it was just a smack base on photo that PD posted on his IG.
It was a funny drama. I had a good laugh while watching it with my friends. Jonghyun's acting was really funny, he's really suited for a comedy role, though I also laughed at his some awkward acting, his acting improved a lot too after his stint in Orange Marmalade.
I cannot with Seungyeon's acting. She embraced the dynamic character role in the story. She's good! Well, she always improved in every project she's doing.
Ahn Bohyun's acting in MOLS was very challenging. He did a good job for a non speaking role. Jaejin was such a cutie and good as well.
Jonghyun and Seungyeon's chemistry is so natural. I guess it's because they were in the WGM before, so it was easy for them to act together. I bet the director had a smooth sailing working esp with the 2 leads.
The editing is poor, the production could have done it better. Anyway, I am still satisfied with MOLS. I am happy to see Jonghyun and Seungyeon acting together.

I'm currently marathoning this drama and it's entirely cute and ridiculous. Moreover, it does not take its self seriously at all and everybuddy seems to be having a ball!

Gong Seung Yeon has quickly become one of my faves. I know some people found Su-jeong to be obnoxious but I loved her straight from the start. ?

And goodness, the chemistry between Jong Hyun and her is crackling. They play off each other really well and I'm tempted to watch them on We Got Married.

Ooh, and all the supporting characters in this are so lovable as well! ( Princess! Moo-myeong! Sam-yong!)

Anybody looking for light, easy-breezy, ridiculous fun should check this out! It's worth it! ?

I never thought GSY can do funny & over the top role but here she proved it. She's the heart of this show. LJH can be a bit stiff sometimes but once he played along with GSY's character, it becomes good.

This drama served its purpose for laughsss..I marathoned it for 2 days. This WGM couple reunion is better than *ehem* Solim's reunion in Our Gabsoon.

I'm more angry how Kim So Eun was totally wasted for whole drama. While for Song Jae Rim, his role was still a new one for him because he always take quite similar roles, and he basically still lack of experience. But not for Soeun.
I rather see them reunite on CF or photoshoot rather than some stupid drama. sigh.

Me too, I was so annoyed for Kim So-eun. I don't like Song Jae-rim enough as it is, but Gapdol was such a stupid idiot and Gabsoon's character was too stupid to live. I kept wondering why she stayed with such a person when all they did was fight and she cried all the time. It was so annoying. I want to see Kim So-eun play a character like Hye-ryeong again in a much better drama.

Hi. I am a diehard shipper for them and i am in heaven. This drama is hilariously fun in a good way and of course with their fiery chemistry together and it feels like their WGM life in continuing saguek clothes. GSY is rocking this role and she looks so beautiful and she does crying scenes so right. Not overdone, or underdone. Just right which makes her look good in sagueks or modern dramas. You are promised for the best kisses in the drama too. Which is spoiling us since GSY or Lee Jong Hyun, either of them havent had serious kisses in any of their previous dramas.

I managed to finish it but even for a fantasy genre this drama is quite bad, in my opinion. The acting and the lines are cringeworthy, and I was hoping for more punch at the ending. The main guy is hot tho. I wonder if he would fare better if it's not a sageuk.

Just finished this Web drama. i could hardly recognise this couple is the WGM OTP I've once rooted for. Despite low budget but this drama is considerably good in the sense their charisma bringing out the character and chemistry between roles just makes me wanna see them more...yup had easily marathon it!!

But on and off Lee Jing Hyun's eyebags is quite a bother (it seemed more severe than back then WGM!) and it does to a certain extent makes people feel he must be working too hard and ended up with eyebags even korean makeup-close-to-perfect-concealer also unable to conceal it.

Just the ending is kinda strangely done...like director is rushing for time (oh well, what the heck as it is Web drama after all...haha) and overall some of the storyline doesn't really make much logical sense but guess it didn't matter since it is somewhat fantasy korean period drama.

All in all, worth watching as light hearted, non dragging on each episode although sometimes their storyline makes u feel 'wow' so many things/ event/ content to fit into a Web drama (I've watched other lesser content and boring Web drama prior to this good one). Now just hoping to get over the withdrawals of this...oh well, can still rewatch their WGM episodes. hehe...

I love this show, watched about 3 times so far. At first, it was appeared a little silly, but with each show unfolded, it made you want to watch more and more, it was funny, lovely and touching, made you laughed and made you cried. Plus they were so perfect together, Lee and Gong , regardless the We Got Married , they were a pair made from heaven, the love was in their eyes, how could you hide?! Hope Lee and Gong do understand that they are young and famous with a lot of fans, yet, come down to the end of the day, true love is only thing will keep you going, true love is priceless. Look forward to the season 2.

Laughing my head off at this funny, funny time travel romantic comedy. I would never have found Korean dramas if not for Netflix and I really enjoy them. The plots are so interesting and the way the female leads always keep their clothes on and have men fall in love with them because they are nice or interesting is curiously feministically empowering.

...I just couldn’t sit through any more childish ridiculosity - it wasn’t even funny, merely terribly bad and interminably silly and trite.

I wanted to love it, I really did, but this lack-lustre script with a lack-lustre actress did nothing for me. I’d lack back the hours of my life I spent watching thanks.
