Lee Yubi, Min-ho star in JTBC time-slip web drama Somehow 18

JTBC is launching a series of web dramas this summer, and this one sounds right up my alley. It’s a time-slip romantic comedy called Somehow 18, about a young man who time-travels back to his hellish high school days in order to save his first love. Lee Yubi (Scholar Who Walks the Night) and Shinee’s Min-ho (Hwarang) have signed on to headline.

Min-ho stars as a bullied outsider, for whom high school was the worst part of his life. But he has a total reversal in adulthood, and grows up to become a chic, handsome orthopedic surgeon. He’ll end up traveling back in time to high school in order to save his first love, Lee Yubi, who committed suicide for reasons unknown. She’s described as a character who looks very innocent but is actually very bold and quirky. He owes her his life for saving him during his traumatic high school days, but she’s also a character with a lot of secrets.

It’s being called a “CPR romantic comedy,” and it sounds like a fun mix between Operation Proposal and the Byun Yo-han movie Will You Be There, and hopefully the movie 17 Again, which I love. A big part of the fun will be in watching the confident version of the hero relive high school the way he’d always dreamed—as the popular boy, and not the miserable outcast. A high school do-over sounds horrifying, but not if you’re armed with the life experience of being an adult, with the fancy makeover to boot. Save the girl and overcome your adolescent trauma—all in a day’s work, right?

JTBC will release their series of web dramas this August, beginning with Sooyoung and Lee Won-geun’s Someone You Might Know, followed by Somehow 18.

Yes, I've been looking forward to another webdrama. This storyline sounds great. It looks like time travel has been a theme these days. (I watched Tunnel and I'm still not over it). Another plus is the casting of Minho. As for Lee Yubi, I never watched her shows but I'm willing to give her a try.

Lee Yubi is a decent actress, I think this will be fine. From her earlier projects, she's good for romcom and looks good with younger costars than older ones so she and Minho should be ok.

I like Lee Yubi, I felt bad for her as an actress that she got so much hate for the stupidly written role of SWWTN after hurting her back so badly during the filming.

I hope she gets proper tv dramas again and not just Web dramas, it's sad to see idols and whatnot keep being bad at acting with not even that successful dramas but still getting lead roles with Park Hye Ryun etc while girls like her get stick in second lead and Web dramas after just one drama goes bad.

I agree. I'm fine with people not loving her performance even if I thought she was fine, but the writing was the big issue in Scholar. That and it went up against Young Pal. I have actually wondered if that back injury was way worse than what the production company said.

She came out of hospital after 2 weeks for a type of injury that normally needs 4 weeks of bed rest and then did a live shoot drama.... I really worried about her back getting worse or damaged more, a back injury is a big thing even if the person can still walk around.

Uuuuuh color me intrigued. That sounds really cool even though I'm not very interested in school dramas, but hey, ever since I read the Virgin Suicides I always was fascinated with this kind of story.

For a split second (I was reading the little side bar with the small picture), I thought it was Lee Min Ho and went huh??? then the next second, my thought went to the younger childhood actor Lee Min Ho and went yay!

It didn't occur to me that it's this one until I click on the article :D
The premise sounds fun enough... I thought I would be sick of the high school setting, but I'm excited for this again, so I guess not :3

I read Minho is participating in the drama for college credits for his grad program or something like that. It's good to see him hone in his craft. He's not a natural actor by any means, but has improved steadily over the years. I love Minho as a person and a performer, he's a big teddy bear, but personally, I still do not like his acting.

There's a great manga named Orange which I was reminded of when reading the synopsis, it's slightly different as it's the younger self who received a letter from her older self to save the boy she liked from committing suicide in high school, it's really good so do try it out!

I LOVE Orange (even if the ending felt rushed). I read it when i was in college and there was a time when it stopped updating after ch.9 for a long time. I panicked coz I thought takano ichigo is not gonna finish it and it will leave a huge hole in my heart.

Yes me to!! :). I was watching the anime last year but I was waiting for it to finish airing and ended up watching the movie instead. I still have to finish the anime. One of my favorite parts has to be when they tied in the title of the anime to the show I just loved the metaphor.

That's just what I thought of, too! There is also a really good anime of Orange too, which led me to start reading the manga.

Lee Yoo Bi is okay with small roles. But only that.
MInho is handsome too.
I will watch it!

She has had only one big role ever, in a horribly written role with a stupid script.

She's a better actress than some people who get lead roles all the time, people say give every crappy idol a chance ten times but when it's a rookie actress they get called bad after just one drama flops.

Lee Yu-bi is a fantastic actress, watch her in Twenty and The Royal Tailor, Pinocchio too. Scholar was such a nightmare because her character was written so poorly.

I don't think she is very great either, but If I could, I will switch her role in this drama with some mediocre actressess out there and get her to lead the full drama instead of webdrama. At least she got some skills and that's what matters.

I am looking forward to see jTBC webdrama, I hope jTBC version is better because most of webdrama that I watched so far are meh and boring. Some decent ones that I like are Ruby My Love (or something like that), Splash Splash Love, Noble Love is OK, Falling For Challenge is OK too. Webdrama actually is better for rookie, less known actors or idols in my opinion.

Was actually just wondering where Lee Yubi has been these days and whad'ya know! Glad to see casting news about her.

Man, I never really got enough of Actor Minho, but I gotta say, I think this is excellent casting because I can totally imagine these two in their roles–especially Yubi! I'm a sucker for this topic–the whole time traveling, reliving your youth and having the opportunity to give yourself a whole do-over to make things right! My all time fave is 13 Going On 30 (omg, Korean remake, please?) and I love movies with the same idea like 17 Again and even Miss Granny. It's just so good!

Anyways, back to this web drama, I was sad to find out that Yubi's character committed suicide, but the more reasons to watch and find out how Minho will save her! I'm already cringing and covering my eyes (but peeking through my fingers, of course) for Minho when he suddenly goes back to his horrid high school days. This sounds like a lot of fun. I'm TOTALLY looking forward to this!

Lol @ "CPR romantic comedy."

This sounds like all the things I wish I could do in my life. I am so there. If there was a way I could go back to MY hellish high school experience and save the girl I used to be, I would do it in a heartbeat. And I actually like Lee Yu-bi, she's such a good actress plus she's cute to boot. Also, I don't think Minho is that bad an actor but the only thing I've ever seen him in was To The Beautiful You. Anyway, I'm there for this drama.

Sounds cute and the casting gives it a youthful vibe. I think Minho has really improved and seems to actually be working hard to get better lol. Plus he has natural charm. I think both of them can do well with the right material. Seems promising!
