Hi everyone, I just started Kill me heal me and in just 2 episodes I am so hooked lol and the fact that I have all of the episodes and I don’t have to experience the torture of waiting weekly(looking at you Circle, Fight my way and suspicious partner)makes me feel so good. I have only seen Shin Se Gi and he is so awesome and he just became Perry Park in episode 2 lol I can't wait to see all of the personalities.
I always get jealous when someone starts watching a drama that I was super hooked with but I am done watching, so on a scale of 1-10 how jealous of me are you kill me heal me fans????I haven't felt this feeling of marathoning a drama in a long time, Thanks kill me heal me for curing my slump.

A great series -I'd argue that Shin Se Gi's guyliner was the 11th personality. Have tissues close by, you'll need then. The OST is superb. Enjoy

Dayamn, your comment triggered a desire to listen to the OST, and I foolishly watched the video clips... and now it is a foregone conclusion that I will re-watch the entire series... and I have a sermon to write... and all I can think of is Ann Yo Na's "oppa" scenes.

It's so awful. I even had to read a couple of recaps instead of watching the eps in order to even be able to finish, because by the end it had just become so awful that I couldn't sit through it. The ending was seriously messed up.

I love the excellent cast in this show. If I have twinges of jealousy over someone watching a fav drama of mine, I just marathon it again - happens all the time. Needless to say, I don't get much sleep. Marathoning really is the cure for drama slump and is so satisfying to watch as many eps as you want and can fit in (usually in my pjs eating dry cereal out of the box). Enjoy!

I'm not jealous at all! On the contrary, when I marathon a drama that has finished airing for a long time, I'm always super jealous of the people who watched it live and could squee together in the recaps! Like right now, I just finished Signal but I can only read the comments.

KMHM was so good, it's on my re-watch list!

Heeeeey beanies! It's been a month since I last visited this site (and watched dramas!). I'm so out of touch I can't even believe it... I spent the last month in Japan, and since our apartment had limited internet, all drama related activities were put on hold in favor of work and keeping in touch with family.
Now I'm in Taipei... and after Japan I feel like I can finally breathe again. Everyone's so chill, happy, energetic, people aren't shy to say hello on the street, I'm enjoying the controlled chaos that I've been missing after Korea.
Anyway, since I can once again watch anything I want... what should I watch, beanies? I'm currently catching up on Perfect Match (Taiwanese) and... that's it! What is the bestest of the best of recent dramas?

If it's the currently airing dramas, I would recommend Seven Day Queen for saeguk, Circle for sci-fi/thriller and Lookout for crime/thriller.

I just watched the newest teaser of Ha Baek's Bride. Been a fan of the manhwa, it's just the last teaser give me a little bit of Goblin Feeling. With the superpower God (but in Ha Baek's case, he only can control Water) that will be showing off his skills to his lady.

But I'm still eager to watch the remake and how the writer going to go with the story. Since it's a total remake to bring it to the modern era. But hey! From the teaser we also know that they will have a scene in the old era too?

And Nam Joo-Hyuk's voice.. dear your deep voice is just, sweet to my ears!

I don't read the manhwa (lovely costumes thoughhhhh) but I trust the Misaeng writer to do her thing. Woooot woot!

All I'm hoping for is for NJH's acting to be as good as it was when he played Joon-hyung. And I agree, his voice is <3 ! Love love love his voice color.

I will dedicate my (sorry) long rant for u.

TOP news is frustrating & cut me deep in many levels.
They reach an amazing unbeatable history in kpop history, bigbang is super A A A lister name, Sunbaes you want to please in this industry, they reach that kind of level already tbh, for a 10 years hard ass working. They made bigbang & vip a living legend for the only 2nd kpop generation that still stick together & very very respected in this industry nowadays. Seriously, damn it.

Sorry for my stupid rant as VIP, but I wear Lies, Tonight, & Knock Out right on my sleeves. They're all my jams with all my gfriend back in college, we're dancing screaming jumping & crying over their music video on MTV. 2011 when MTV is playing, yeah. Is none of vevo business back then :(

Our fashion master degree was a trainwrack of torture. Tons of fashshow are killing us slowly & BB's songs are our only escape. I hope this time, us as VIP, are gonna be the ones that save u TOP, save BB, we are faithfully support BB, no matter how long & how tired the journey for u to get back to the stage again

I know maybe I sound ridiculous but I downright know how directioner & belieber feel back in those days.

In happy page, 2D1N keeps me entertain as long as I know. haha.
I watch friendship trip with MGY & PBY as guest, and they're surprising me especially with MGY strong will & competition blood. And she aint aging! how can MGY looks same age with PBY & Girl's Day Minah.

Recommendation me for :
Defendant, suspicious partner, SWDBS, Rebel or anything?
I am in slump again after Tunnel is over and Ruler makes me stop at eps 2 , shet.

At least he is awake. That is a good thing.

While I don't condone the use of illegal substances, weed being a part of that, I still don't think that TOP deserved all the hate that came his way leading to the current situation.
Bigbang has a lot of songs that are meaningful for me. And I just hope he pulls through and that all can come to a fair and peceful settlement.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't really listen to Big Bang, but it's just so sad to see yet another artist succumb to the pressure of stardom and I was really shocked to hear about the hospitalization. He obviously shouldn't have been doing something illegal, but instead of getting down on him for it, people should've been worried at what it might indicate regarding his mental state, since he's even got a diagnosis. He shouldn't be exempted from the law, obviously, but I wish the general public would show more mercy when celebrities turn out not to be the perfect, saintly beings they want them to be. Obviously no human being will ever be perfect, it's crazy to demand it from someone just because they're in the spotlight.

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and I hope they make sure to get him the help he needs. And that no one will figure out where he's staying now, so that he can rest comfortably.

Sidenote: I was thinking how it's weird that so many YG artists seem to be suffering from mental health issues, but then I realized that it's probably just because YG doesn't stop them from going public with it. I'm pretty sure lots of idols suffer depressions and anxiety, with all that pressure and all the malicious online comments, but most agencies probably won't let them speak up about it.

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree - the whole situation is so sad, and I found the whole witch hunt against him a bit bizarre. I saw today where he was being released to another hospital (and luckily they don't seem to be telling the press). The pics and videos of him being wheeled out were heartbreaking, he looked so sad and pitiful and the reporters were hounding him almost to the point of assaulting him.

Some of this is probably me being from a different culture (and a country where weed is legal in some areas), but the public reaction seems a bit extreme. He smoked months ago in his home. Meanwhile, binge drinking is seen as ok - not to mention there are other celebrities who have done/been accused of FAR worse things that endangered or hurt other people (or were just slimy), and they aren't getting nearly the backlash.

I hope that he is able to recover, quietly finish his military service, and rest away from the crazy public and their pitchforks.

I think part of it is the level of fame, since they're even internationally well-known. The more successful people are, the more the media etc will revel in taking them down.

Marijuana addiction is a very real thing and it definitely doesn't look pretty, so I get why it's not legal in Korea, especially since it's not uncommon for it to lead to use of heavier drugs as well as there actually being a lot of hippies from the 60s/70s who ONLY smoked weed and yet still feel the after-effects to this day, despite it being many years since they quit. But yes, the level of backlash seems really out of proportion. If he'd been smoking it WHILE on duty after enlisting, it would make a little bit more sense (especially if I'm correct and it was police he worked at since police workers breaking the law seems extra bad), but this is just ridiculous. He clearly isn't okay, which is most likely the reason why he smoked it in the first place and hounding him like this is just really dangerous and irresponsible :(

From my exp watching korean news & been there, drugs in all forms is biggest crime in South Korea. Apparently, there is "no status limitation" for drug case. Yup. Crazy right? Even serial killer in SK has their status limitation year.

Second big crime is gambling. Fortunately, some artist caught in this case can make it through like Kim Jun Ho (2D1N)

Rape (or any sexual assault) are not that big deal in SK in the other hand. Funny yea?
Tony Ahn (HOT), Park Shi Hoo, Young Wook (Roora) are involved in sexual case related, do u see them now? Yes. Exception for KimHyunJoong perhaps.

Kangin SJ (DUI) , Ga In BEG (bullying), Kang Ho Dong (Tax evasion), Song Hye Gyo (tax evasion), and all slave exploited contract for kpop member's cases like EXO-M versus SM, are actually a big crime in different country that could turn media upside down, but in SK, people will forget it in second after the blown up.

like this body shaming :
http://www.koreaboo.com/news/chloe-moretz-attacks-korean-production-company-for-body-shaming-girls/

in South Korea, body shaming is ain't a shame act, they dont even realise it is a shaming until Chloe Moretz points it out! Lol.
Is a big deal in USA & Europe for that!

So perhaps, thats their cake to take as korean citizen. :(

Open Thread, week 18. Reality hit hard this week, coming back to work, but because I am inherently lazy, I only saw patients three days this week. However, because I’m also embedded with a Type A personality, drama-watching took a back seat to chart completions; however, I did manage to see both recent episodes of Circle last PM. I actually saw the 15 minutes of Circle a couple nights ago, but because the streaming site I was using was buffering every 2 seconds, frustration with interrupting the seamless acting that is Yoo Jin-Goo made me delay that gratification for another night. I read the episode 5 recap in the meantime, which is the original reason I love Dramabeans so much—amazing recaps!

Can I just gush a little about Circle, namely Yoo Jin-Goo? This show just solidifies to me that I will likely watch Yoo Jin-Goo in anything, good or bad. He is just enthralling. I believe him in everything he’s in; he’s not forced, he has great timing, his eyes tell the story, and his voice inflections make me want to reach through the screen and just hold him. I still think that he will be one of the most prolific actors Korea has ever had.

Keeping hubby in the loop with Circle, but slowly realizing that although he likes Western sci-fi, he turns to Korean dramas for the rom-com and melodrama.

Which brings up another conversation:

Me: I want you to watch this interview with Gong Yoo with me, I’ve seen half of it. We’ll play “what if” after we’re done.

*Both watching the CNN Asia interview with Gong Yoo, found here: https://youtu.be/ungTrlhrJa8 *

Me: Doesn’t this make you sad? He sounds lonely and depressed.

Hubby: He probably is lonely and depressed. It sounds like he needs to go to middle of nowhere Italy, where we were, and hike the mountains and drink from the springs.

Me: Or he could come here. Our life would be perfect for him.

Hubby: Oh, that’s a great idea, having your TV boyfriend visit us. Are you crazy!?!

Me: I’m serious! We went on a long (5 mile) walk/hike this morning before work, without anyone around. Absolutely NO ONE would recognize him in our 1% minority, all Caucasian hick town. He could go grocery shopping without being bothered. He could go to the lake and ski, hiking in the National Forest; you could cook, it would be an amazing respite. And who wouldn’t want to hang with us?

Hubby: True. He would just need a private jet to get here to avoid the mobs in Korea and Asia.

Me: But we would look like deranged fans if we wrote him inviting him to stay in our house—he might be afraid we’d murder him in his sleep. Maybe we should just tell him the spots in Italy where we saw no Asians or Koreans, staying away from Rome and Venice. Belluna in the mountains and Bibione Beach were both amazing and I doubt anyone would know him there.

*Later that night *

Me: *Barely awake, but hearing “Beautiful” by Crush emanating from my husband’s side of the bed. Am I dreaming?...

Me: What are you doing?

Hubby: Nothing. * Smothering phone with his pillow *

Me: Are you listening to the Goblin soundtrack??? I have to sleep, it’s 11 pm and I have a ton of charts to do tomorrow before we leave for Texas.

Hubby: I’ll go to the other room then. *Gets out of bed *

Me: *Calling after him * I still hear Ailee’s “I will go to you like the First Snow.” Seriously, if you don’t turn it off, I’m going to write Gong Yoo’s managing company and invite him over!

Hubby: Fine, I’m turning it off…after this song.

Me: *An hour later, tossing and turning with Ailee’s song still running through my head *
Dear Gong Yoo…

Hello beanies!
how are you all? The past couple of weeks hve been intersting for real life.. Some good things: my sisters confirmation went well. Got a new bike (which I tested to and from work for the first time today). The weather has been nice this week (we are ignoring last week when it snowd heavily) And people at work are mostly back to being civil!

In the bad news I broke up with a guy I've been seeing, but hey not everything can go well. Guess I can go back to dreaming about getting sweapt off my feet kdrama style ;)

Kdrama toddlers style!
4 year old kneeling down in front of one of the girls and held out flowers "these are for you, but you are the pretties flower forever!"

3 year old *building a huose*: "I am building a prison! So bad cops have a place to live"
girl N *yelling for boy A and running to hug him*
Boy A: *gives her a kiss* then says prowdly " we will get married because she learned to say my name!" (girl N is almost deaf but slowly learning how to speak).

In other news, a friend and I have decided that we need to treat ourselves and are blowing away our raises on a fancy dinner tonight. Big holes in our pockets tonight! But "treat yourself!" - that's the mantra right?

And cause I forgot in my first comment:
Dramas I am watching:
1) Tunnel: currently on ep 7. I am liking the drama. Though such a deux ex mahina to have the father walk in just then to confirm the identity. There are a few other examples of this tool being used, but they are a much more descrete than in sleepy hallow so all good.
2) Started a chinese drama called "My girlfriend's boyfriend" such a wacky thing. The main lead is a bit too much for me, but am enjoying the episodes anyway.
feel generally lost for where to start with all the new dramas (I am Lagging way behind). My recent and long lasting drama slump hasn't quite let go, and now I feel unsure about where to start. Might start on some of the ones that have finished their run. :p

I have loved many dramas with low ratings but I just can't help asking this one - Why aren't the Koreans watching Seven Day Queen?

I know I can't expect everyone to have the same taste as I do in dramas. Usually, I can even see the reasons why those dramas I liked are not everyone's cup of tea. This time, I can't.

Aside from Suspicious Partner which is a wholly different genre, when I compare SDQ to Ruler of the Mask, the former beats the latter hands down in terms of writing, directing and even acting! Before YSH or KSH's fans throw stones at me, I would like to qualify that we can't really appreciate good acting in a vacuum. It must be accompanied by good writing.

Last week, it was brought up it was perhaps the timing(SDQ started when SP and Ruler already built their stable viewership) or the star power of YSH-KSH that made it hard for SDQ to pull in decent numbers. Is it really so?

I'm not sure if I should have brought this up in OT but it is bugging me more than I like. I guess if I hadn't watched Ruler, I would not be so frustrated.

Watching a show like Ruler makes me wonder if there exist a somewhat independent person in drama production whose job is to check the story, vet the script and point out all the plot holes, logic fails and bad script? It's not just Ruler of course but many shows suffer from these problems. It happens so often and sometimes too many times in one show that I wonder why doesn't anyone check?

"makes me wonder if there exist a somewhat independent person in drama production whose job is to check the story, vet the script and point out all the plot holes, logic fails and bad script?"

I think the PD has to approve of the script and while there may be others who need to approve of the first few scripts, I think that's about it for most the show. So really it also comes down to the PD. If the PD is good, he'll take on scripts by good writers or point out stuff that needs to be rewritten. Mediocre or bad PDs might not catch all those things. Plus, a really good one can even sometimes make a bad script work.

I think one of the flaws behind TV show writing is that it's not written with a specific end in sight, when it's a Western, multiple season show. You'd think the more closed Asian format would mean improvement, but they still write scripts on a more weekly basis too, so they're under time pressure and sometimes loose sight of the end or just don't know how to get from A to Z.

Yes, I think the time constraints may certainly contribute to this situation. When you find yourself constantly racing to beat the clock, as they say, you'll often run the risk of missing things, unfortunately.

In the case of Ruler, the PD is just as bad. So, the drama suffers from the fatal combination with no checks. I have no experience in writing but I'd imagine as a writer, wouldn't you need to keep track of all your story lines, characters' motives and development etc? There must be some sort of planning even if you are improvising the script weekly.

2

I'd say yes, you would need to keep track of those. Unfortunately there are a million writers who don't take those things very seriously and just churn out stuff to make money. Sad, but true. That's why there are so many predictable makjang family dramas and why American TV shows have a gazillion seasons and go on until nothing even makes sense anymore.

Planning is something you put a lot of care into if you have a lot of writer's pride or take yourself seriously as an artist. But even writers like Charles Dickens wrote getting paid per word and sometimes forgot things like sideplots when they wrote serials for magazines.

That's the benefit of start early. I don't think the hype has so much to with consistency of the rating, at least for me it doesn't apply to all drama - drama like Saimdang & UF as the proofs. Ruler is kind of sageuk that audiences watch, regardless how slow paced and its weak writing.

Not watching SDQ but see Lookout, its rating keeps increasing, and now has reached 7% ++. They started lower than SDQ (if my memory serves me right) so if Lookout can do it, I don't see why SDQ cannot do it especially with positive reviews that I read at least in this site. Probably the rating would be higher once the adult appear. No drama in this time slot (same goes to Mon-Tues) that actually is a giant competitor - so the probability to get higher is there. Maybe KBS should promote more? Like how they promoting FMW.

Sera, I wish you are watching SDQ too so that I can hear your opinion. I don't mind if a fan of Ruler tells me why they prefer the show to SDQ, LOL!

When you say Ruler is the kind of saeguk that viewers watch regardless of the weak writing, why doesn't it apply to SDQ? I would think that SDQ is actually a more traditional saeguk than Ruler, am I wrong? Ruler may be set in saeguk but I don't find the plots or politics on par with most saeguks.

You are right that no drama is a giant competitor. I'd thought that SP and FMW would get better ratings because there's always an audience for rom com. Just look at SWDBS. But SP can't even break 10% and FMW just broke it this week.

I don't keep track of promotions. It's a shame if KBS isn't promoting SDQ enough.

My answer is like I said - that's the benefit of start early. People already on Ruler's track that it will be hard to change to other channel. To be honest, if I am Korean and I already started & connected with Ruler's plot it won't be easy for me to change to other drama except if Ruler is really boring, which for me is not. As long as there is something I can look forward to, I will keep watching.

I can't comment for SDQ as I watched some parts in first two epi, and not really drawn with the child actors' part. Maybe will check later when I have time as I have read many postive reviews here. Probably if SDQ started on the same day with Ruler & SP, the rating will be different than now.

Of course if the rating can reflect the quality, it will great, but I have already accepted on the fact that high rating doesn't mean it is quality product too. If my fav shows get high rating, I will be happy, if not, I will just appreciate whatever my drama got it. Maybe having many fav shows which are underrated made me more positive lol.

About the promotion, I don't really follow either. But I don't think I have seen many buzz for first four epi.

I think capturing the audience from the start is very important. This is why dramas like Ruler start with a bang. The pace is fast, things escalate quickly and move at a breakneck speed. By the time, they start to falter and the flaws get bigger, the audience is already hooked. Some will switch or drop but most will stay regardless of the quality.

Interesting that you brought up about the child actors' parts. On the contrary, I love them so much that I am already missing them. However I also realized there are some viewers(comments I garner from streaming sites) who dislike the girl very much.

3

Yes, for some productions they want to start with a bang at least in the first 4-6 epi, in order to secure audiences. We have many examples for that. That's why I don't really trust when any drama started really well. I already expected the slowness of Ruler after first four epi - because everything went so fast, and we also questioned, will the writer has enough material for 16 more epi and I think we have the answer already.

I don't dislike the girl in SDQ btw. I think she is cute.

1

I concur with Seven Day Queen. It does seem the kind of saeguk that the Korean audience would gravitate toward, so I am confounded by the low rating. The show deserves to be appreciated!

I often hope that there is a dedicated "plot hole reaper" or "logic fail police" on the editing team. These flaws are fun to make fun of for a bad show, but they drives me bananas when I see the promise of greatness and then a facepalm moment takes me out of the story.

Hahaha! I like the idea of "Plot Hole Reaper" and "Logic Fail Police"! Banish all these evils of bad drama writing for good ?

Some shows are so bad that I find them funny. Ruler unfortunately isn't one of them. Perhaps it's because I thought the show would be an entertaining ride even though there were signs of weak writing from the start.

I think I tend to be very hard on shows which take themselves seriously but fall far short. It explains why I can stomach all the nonsense in My Sassy Girl but I just cannot stand the no sense in Ruler.

It is also difficult for me to tolerate logic fails for shows which take themselves very seriously. This is the reason why I have not yet been able to fully embrace Korean legal thrillers, police procedurals, and medical dramas.

After several of my favourite shows received less than impressive ratings (case in point, Hello Monster), I have told myself to come to terms with it. I'd be happy if 7DQ could manage to pull at least 8% further into the show. Ruler is saved by the veteran cast and YSH and KSH, but I must say this is the weakest work of KSH that I have seen so far, no matter how much I adore the girl. I like YSH as he is, but among the male actors of the 9x generations none has beaten Yeo Jin Goo in sageuk yet, at least for me.

@kiara would be able to make better recommendations than I ever can :D. I've fallen in love with YJG in TMETS, then back-watching Iljimae and was surprised to find both him and Kim Yoo Jung there, but they were so tiny. Looks like he's in Warrior Baek Dong Soo and Tree With Deep Roots too, but I haven't got time to check any of those out myself. I sat through the horrible writing of Jackpot just for him, but at a certain point the story became too much to bear so I rage quit it. If you just want a short watching experience then seeing him in the first few episodes of Jackpot would still do. I personally like his performance much better than Jang Geun-Suk's, though I don't disregard the latter's amazing effort and sacrifice for the role he played.

Btw, Choi Min-Soo is the real star of Jackpot!! With him exiting the show, there was little reason left for me to stay (Yeo Jin Goo alone couldn't save the writing for me sadly). The man reeks of charisma in literally every scene he is in. :O

1

I miss the tiny Jin Goo and Yoo Jung lol.

@outofthisworld he has so many drama when he played as young part. But among my favorite were in Giant ( as young Lee Beom Soo) & in Tree with Deep Roots (as young Jang Hyuk).

2

@maskros, Choi Min Soo was da bomb in The Liar and His Lover. If only Jackpot had good writing, sigh.

@seralovestteobokki I think I'll have to pick up TWDR on of these days. I've been wanting to start it.

17

@outofthisworld
Dang he's in TLAHL too? Now I've got to resume the show.

16

I was fangirling hard on Choi Min-soo in "Jackpot." He has that majestic aura in sageuk that makes his presence commanding.
If there is something that I hope for Yeo Jin-goo to learn from him is "less is more."

6

@kiara
You're right. When I saw him I thought that the real Sukjong could have looked only as much formidable in real life. There was so much going underneath the surface even when he didn't show that much emotion at all. When he left the show I was left puzzled why they could manage to secure such an actor and let the whole show go to waste.

As much as I agree with you that Choi Min-Soo's style is less is more, I wonder if that is YJG's acting style at all. Not that I doubt he can ever master it; just that I feel boy can do well during emotionally heavy scenes and playing those types of emotions is his forte. I have not seen Circle so I don't know how he has matured in that drama. :D

3

@HyeMi
Yeo Jin-goo fangirl party going here?
As a fellow fangirl I'd say that he left his mark in every single sageuks that he was in.

Yeo Jin-goo, Kim Yoo-jung, Shim Eun-kyung, Jin Ji-hee,Park Eun-bin, Nam Ji-Hyun, Lee David, Noh Young-hak, Park Bo-young, Yoo Seung-ho, Lee Hyun-woo... were pretty much the stand out child actors towards the end of the "Sageuk's golden era." The real long traditional epic sageuks that we don't get to see these days. My kind of sageuk /cry.

Fortunately these former fantastic child actors who were well trained in traditional sageuks are transitioning to adulthood and some into their first lead roles YAY.

Imo Yeo Jin-goo is the very best in sageuks. His female counterpart would be the sageuk fairy herself Kim Yoo-jung although Shim Eun-kyung is ridiculous talented and could wipe the floor with them.

I watched a couple episodes of Yeo Jin-goo's first sageuk (Yeon Gaesomun 2006 with 100 eps no sub) and he played Kim Yushin's bratty little brother. He stood out back then even though his fellow child actor Lee David was the main focus.
In short, he is good in everything so watch them all. http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Yeo_Jin_Goo
Sageuks: Yeon Gaesomun (is missing from the list), Iljimae,Ja Myung Go,The Reputable Family, Giant (Period 1970), Warrior Baek Dong Soo,Tree With Deep Roots ....
By the time you are done with Ja Myung Go you could tell that he'd have great chemistry with his future leading ladies. The way he was teasing Jin Ji-hee makes me go aw(coconuts) lol.

I feel as if just bringing YJG's name up almost always guarantees a fangirl party of some sort haha. Doesn't help that he's knocking it out of the park now in Circles according to the reviews :P

I'm so glad that Circles is a solid project that is making the most of and bringing the best out of YJG's acting capability. As much as I've been excited to see TJG, KJY and KSH transition to adult roles none of the sageuks they've been starring in has been doing them justice. Either the dramas short-changed their characters or fell short in the writing department, or worse, both. I'd love nothing more than to see him headline a good sageuk in the future, with KJY, KSH or Kim Sae Ron when she comes of age.

1

I'm always late to the party :(.
You know, I won't be surprise if Yeo Jin-goo will end up as a lead in "Pachunhwang" or play a major character in it.
The writers/producers of "Circle" are known more for their fusion sageuks than modern dramas.

Kim Sae-ron and Kim So-hyun definitely belong to this group of child actors.
I watched "Ja Myung Go" and "The Duo" but I honestly don't remember Kim So-hyun's part. It was probably really short. I hope she won't give up on the genre after "Ruler." She did well in "The Last Princess." Best childhood version of the amazing Son Ye-jin.

I've never seen Kim Sae-ron in a sageuk until "Mirror of the Witch." I wish it wasn't so awkward with the romance because she could've done much better without it.

Unfortunately sageuk these days aren't what it used to be. Historical consciousness is pretty much lacking and the young actors have no proper training. The 2nd lead girl in "Ruler" is the most obvious.

Oh well, I guess things changes and sometimes it's not always for the best.

1

I wonder if it has something to do with what the mass consider appealing. plus the production cost too. Sometimes there would be a rather solid one popping up, probably not in the league of the older and more classic ones, but still solid for today's standard; however I think those are rare and even if they're good it's still hard to attract enough viewers compared to other genres.

I just did a quick search for Pachunhwang and on AsianWiki it says the show has changed its title to Six Flying Dragons instead? Are we still getting a new Pachunhwang?

The second lead in Ruler is weak in general. I've watched a couple more projects where she stars and it seems that she's more comfortable playing a certain type of personality and in modern dramas. She brought much of it into Ruler tbh, and that's what caused the inconsistency in her portrayal of the character, besides bad sageuk intonation ofc.

1

Yes it's out with the old and in with the new. Fusion sageuk rom.com is cheaper and more appealing to our generation.
The last epic conventional sageuk was "Jeong Do-jeon" in 2014 (8 million budget). Highest rating was 19.7% which was pretty good but I think KBS was expecting more.

You are actually right about Pachunhwang. It's a place holder for their next sageuk which they that it might be based on King Sejo's (Princess Man) era.

That's too bad about Ruler. Kim So-hyun is basically wasted there :(.

1

The number one must watch list is Giant! Although is not sageuk..His young Gangmo is so delightful to watch. Until now, whenever i hear the ost (edelweiss) i can imagining his gangly gangmo walking in old street of seoul with his shoe-shinning box looking as defiant as ever. (While the instrumental ver of edelweiss reminds me of lee bumsoo's grouwn up gangmo)
The first time i watch yjg in drama is iljimae. I still remember the scene when i fall in love with this boy: his character watching his father executed with pulling apart by ox (scary!!!) He trembled, fell down and peed his pants.the traumatized look in his face i can not forget.
I must be the only person who dislike moon/sun. Sure, he was great in there. But moon/sun i can see the traces of his moonsun character in several of his perf after that. His seja-crying-over-yeonwoo also has been milked again n again n again ultil i fed up. I almost believe that yjg already fell down with disease similar to lee jun ki = tendency to lost control, and felt so dissapointed.
Until circle came, that is. Now i completely on rebound!!

I get the frustration about Ruler, I mean I still tried watching Ruler this week in hopes, it has gotten better or found its mojo back. Because the earlier episode at the premier week, it might not have been perfect but was watchable and intriguing. Things moved fast, the characters were on track, leads were charming....but then the time jump happened and everything regressed. I like Yoo Seung Ho and kim So Hyun more than anybody else but even their combined effort which I see is not enough to salvage the story for me. Right now, Its just a confused mess and I have too many shows that are good to waste time on it to be frank. I much prefer watching select portions on instagram or youtube instead of the whole show. Because, some portions are damn great but all of that combined makes me angry at the writer and the PD.
As for Seven Days Queen, it has found a solid number of core audience this week, I hope the work off mouth can pull in more viewers. I don't know exactly what makes people watch a show and reject one but I guess star power, timing, content, all of that works in combination. Still, I hope it can slowly rise and get double digits because people are missing out. They really are missing out on the child actors, the wonderful script, the music and Lee Dong Gun's perfect acting prowess here. I want to write an open letter to Korean audience and beg them to tune in next week if I could to be honest. But sometimes, it takes time to get the audience but it isn't unnatural to find more viewers later on a show so I hope it rises, 7DQ, fighting!

Well, "Rebel" was based on the same timeline so watching a back to back sageuk about the same tyrant and now his incompetent brother may be tiring.
There are 3 sageuks on every week. Hello sageuk fatigue...

"Ruler" is kind of like "Flower in Prison." It's old school enough to rope in the older generation. Difference is, one has way too many flaws than the other.
The sageuk viewers are familiar with the leads especially Yoo Seung-ho. He grew up playing the younger version of almost every Joseon kings out there.
I think "Ruler" would have been in the high teens close to 20% right now if the writing and directing weren't a complete mess.

I'm waiting for the main leads of SDQ to show before I start watching.

I haven't tried SDQ because I'm not in the current mood for a sad ending/tragedy (I may be wrong about expecting this but I feel like I read it somewhere?)...but I know that means nothing in terms of what people like, and I'm not even sure if Ruler is supposed to end well or tragically. I couldn't get past episode 1 or 2 of that one though.

Happy Friday Beanies! ^^

So I didn't get around to as much drama-watching as I'd planned, dunno how time slipped away or what I did, but somehow I spent most week doing... nothing... lol :b

Caught up on Suspicious Partner. I still like it, but also still just like it, not love it.

Almost caught up on Lookout and I love it! Only missing this week's eps. It's definitely not flawless and I'm almost as annoyed with the female lead as in Wild Romance, but Kim Young Kwan... Wow... I didn't think I'd ever like his acting, but he's doing so good! I love how all the characters are morally ambigious. She's out doing stuff a cop just shouldn't (or any person for that matter, like, don't go to a school and wave guns around woman!), he's being stealthily and egotistically out for justice hiding behind a mask of sleaziness, the hacker's been to jail and I'm pretty sure what both he and Seulgi's character is doing is illegal lol. They also both seem to have a more selfish motive of revenge somewhere, but they have much more heart than the other two imo. Or they're just more sane.

The Best Hit was such a surprisingly good premiere! I'd been looking forward to it, but did not expect it to be this funny, which is odd, because my most fave PD is behind it, but I just wasn't sure how his variety skills would translate to drama. Basically I loved EVERYTHING about it, except the accidental kisses which is a trope I just loathe. On the plus-side, it was funnier, because it happened three times in a row, which is definitely on the more unusual side. I just hope Idol-Daddy won't fall for the same woman as Idol-Kiddo, because that's just creepy and weird and NO.

Watched Let's Eat. Tis fine. Not a "foodie" so it felt a bit lacking to me, but it wasn't bad. I do know get the Doojoon love though heh.

Seen ep 1-6 of Chicago Typewriter. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the first two eps. But then all the book-stuff started to become background for all the ghost hijinks (which have been seen a million times before) and the reincarnation stuff and both just bore me. So now I'm not sure when I'll manage to finish.

Still trying to finish Mystery Queen. Up next is ep 8. Gotten slightly better, but it just doesn't work for me.

Variety-wise I've been busy catching up with all the Winner-promotions and all the FT Island appearances that have been rolling out lately due to their 10th anniversary. They were all on ICSY yesterday apparently, so impatiently waiting for subs now! :D

Also loved Hongki on KB, him and Heechul roasting each other is hilarious haha! And HK + Jonghoon on My Little Television was so pathetically funny, with all the cats hiding from the cameras lol :b

Also all caught up on 1N2D. YSY seems to be doing better these days! He's loosened up a bit in his body language and he even makes jokes now and then, yay! I hope he keeps it up and improves even further, I really like the synergy between him and JJY with their almost-reverse hyung-dongsaeng relationship haha ^^

I just watched 1N2D's Hwarang episode because FMW made me so smitten again by Park Seo Joon (his SWP's character was an ass) - now I wonder how would he be like in variety shows. I remember liking his appearance in Running Man but this 1N2D's episode highlighted his “potential“ as a variety show member, if you can call such bad luck as potential LOL.

I am seriously considering watching Hwarang just to see PSJ while waiting on FMW's new episode, but the reviews scared me. I don't want to fall out of love yet.

On other notes, few more days to FMW yay! Waiting for Mondays is def easier because the weekend makes the days passed quickly.

0

I've only ever finished fusion sageuks too. Even though I think SFD is fantastic, I'm still just halfway lol.

I think I'll take a pass on Hwarang until one day when I'm too bored and my curiousity too great haha!

I'm not watching FMW, tried the first 10 mins, but then decided I'm already watching too many live shows and it's too stressful. So I'm waiting until it's finished or at least until ManxMan is done lol :b

0

If only he'd been the one to join insted of YSY"

I completely agree with you on this. PSJ is just so funny in variety with all his bad luck. However, YSY is slowly improving and learning to be less aggressive when it comes to winning like he was in the first couple of episodes (which made me cringe so much). He hasn't made me laugh yet so there is still a long way to go.

Agree. He really is improving, like I said above too, but yeah, he still hasn't made me laugh either, so there's definitely room left for improvement.

Park Seo Joon just fit in so naturally with the group and it's been a while since they've had a bad-luck guy haha. I wish he'd become a regular guest or something :P It could be The Flower Boy Trio against The Ahjussis lol.

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today!

Watched this week:

Whisper - The fact that Secretary Song can actually find all ways to be funny even as he faces major jail time, is quite amusing.

Fight My Way - Hye-ran ..... Ugh! Can we pleeeeeze do something about her! ..... On a positive note, the actress playing her is certainly doing the job well because we all can't stand her character! Heh!

Suspicious Partner - Up to episode 7-8 and yeah, I'm totally loving this.

Seven Day Queen - Ok, so I really didn't expect to be as impressed by Lee Dong-gun as I have been, but there you have it, I am.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Totally agree re: Hye-Ran, LOL! She's the perfect character you love to hate! Watching Dong-Man tell her to get lost was insanely satisfying, but I have a feeling he's not going to get rid of her that easily. Oh well...it'll make for more epic battles in future episodes! Just as long as she doesn't kiss Dong-Man again, because imma hafta cut her if that happens. XD

I just want to come here and drop my wish that everyone will have a good weekend this weekend. It is raining a lot here and I think I'm catching a cold, so stay healthy beanies.

Fight My Way is my absolute treat nowadays. I used to like heavy dramas but now I think I'm falling more for the slice-of-life ones like Misaeng, Oh Hae-Young Again and Fight My Way. I like it when everything seems like ordinary things in life but the script and the execution make it really worthy of watching. They are touching and very relatable.

I bid my good night here. I'm now having some trouble transfering the data in the application LINE in my old IPhone to the new one I just got today. I happened to close the application LINE in my new IPhone when my backep up data was being transfered and then everything was gone. Gone for good, gone forever. I wanted to scream and then I thought of the lead actor's father's saying in Pinochio "When you realize that everything is transient, you won't be sad anymore". Gone. But OK.

I'm writing this because I saw bb Joohyuk up there, lol.

1. I rarely obsess over personal lives of kdrama celebs, so I'm surprised at myself when after an hour of stalking around I ended up the FB profile of a WFKBJ crew member with less-pixelated pictures during the wrap-up party. Color me crazy.

2. Fight My Way is the only current drama I'm watching...and while I enjoyed their chemistry, Park Seojoon, Geewonie, and the latest episode, I'm not compleeeeetely sold yet. Sometimes I find myself thinking, oh the writer should have added this line, oh they lingered on that shot five seconds too long, etc. Doesn't help that I hate characters like the ex girlfriend and the wannabe boyfriend (although Moobin can be cute).

3. I'm gonna start Liar and His Lover because how can I not, after seeing the 2,000+ comments on the finale...and after reading JB's really good impression of it <3

Just a iny warning: the start of TLAHL was kind of shaky, but if you keep watching you'll definitely be rewarded hehe ^^

I actually tried to watch the first episode weeks before and it felt so fresh. Had to stop just when Joy's guitar string snapped because the second hand humiliation hit me so hard that time XD

LOL I know that feeling! Secondhand embarrassment gets me every time :b
It does indeed feel fresh right from the start! I was a bit "meh" on it first, because it had some slight editing issues, but it found its feet pretty quickly :D

I am so thankful for 7DQ to be in my life because the story is so touching and beautifully presented for the past 4 episodes. I really don't want to be ahead of myself and sing praises just to be disappointed later on, but I must say I'm impressed by the course the story has taken and how it's been told. LDG and the child actors made their way into my heart without me even realising it. The first four episodes were solid in laying the foundation for the story and the romance that is going to be at the centre of the show. To say I'm convinced by the romance is an understatement. The two kids' acting feels so sincere and genuine that I wouldn't have any trouble believing that they might like each other in real life, if somebody told me so. I also absolutely love the fact that the writing made them completely equal in their relationship: the girl would link arms, hold hand, give the ring to the prince and even wipe his tears. Yet it doesn't make the prince any confused or passive - I love his teasing her and telling her in a brotherly, friendly, but no less romantic way that he likes her too and would marry her for his feeling. Absolutely no cheese. These two cutie pies' lines are that genuine and transparent; they're like soft breezes: refreshing and heart-fluttering at the same time.

Now that I type these out I've got to watch ep 3 & 4 again to immerse myself in their sweet moments. *sobs*

Let me be the foolhardy one! After Ruler, I told myself not to get too excited over SDQ. But but....I just can't help myself! I don't care if I have to eat my words later.

I can't help myself either. I'm having serious trouble keeping my expectation in check, and I feel both alarmed and relieved that the show keeps chipping away at my guard with every minute. Do I even make sense XD?
