[Staff Spotlight] Get to know SailorJumun

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

Sadly, there’s no interesting story behind my name. I just combined two of my favorite things—Sailor Moon and the song “Mirotic (Jumun)” by DBSK—and thought it sounded cool, ha.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

I distinctly remember walking in on my mom watching the 2005 makjang War of Roses and being so intrigued that I couldn’t walk away. I was definitely way too young to be watching something like that, but hey, it opened up those sacred gates to dramaland, so no harm, no foul.

What’s your favorite drama that you’ve recapped?

Hands down The Liar and His Lover. I loved it so much that I would find myself rambling (er, fangirling *cough*) in my recaps and having to edit the hell out of them. It was just wonderful having a sweet youth drama that was so confident with its story and its characters—characters that I so wish were real.

What drama genres do you especially like?

I’m a pure rom-com gal, but I especially love rom-coms with a slight fantasy or quirky twist thrown in a la I Hear Your Voice or Surplus Princess.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

Medical dramas are usually a no for me. I’ll endure one if I love the cast, but if I can avoid it, I definitely will. While I can deal with heroes fighting against corruption in most other dramas, seeing that in a hospital setting just turns my stomach.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

Eun-jae from Age of Youth had my heart the second I saw her. Like her, I’m terribly awkward and soft-spoken, but also just very weird. Actress Park Hye-soo gave me some awful (and hilarious) flashbacks to my freshman year of college with her on-the-nose performance.

What drama character would you want to be?

I’d love to be In-ha from Pinocchio. It’d be scary being a living, breathing lie detector, but I always found it admirable how she treated her Pinocchio syndrome as an asset in her life rather than a hindrance. And when it was a hindrance, she still took it like a pro. Teach me your ways, Unni.

What was your major in school?

I majored in English with a minor in Korean Studies. (Just graduated in May, woot woot!)

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

Movie, Titanic (yes, I’m a total sap). TV show, ’90s sitcom Boy Meets World. Neither ever get old for me.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

I’d like to say Jaejoong, but if I were anywhere near that man, I would probably jump his bones and I don’t exactly think he would appreciate that. So I’ll go with Lee Jong-seok instead. I’d take him out to get pampered since he’s had such a busy, busy year.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

In a world where a meat-loving gumiho cross-dresses to enter an all-boy school and romance a spoiled rich boy who also happens to be a high-jumping champion. But how will this gumiho blend in with the guys when she doesn’t even know how to blend in with humans, period? Find out—at your own risk.

Your mutant drama baby sounds so much better and more intriguing than Hana Kimi. I'md definitely watch it, especially if Kim Seulgi is cast in it as the gumiho

Hana kimi wasn't that bad, it was just delightfully stupid and good mindless entertainment, but I supposed you have to be into that sort of thing.

The Korean version however.....

No.

Just.... No.

Yes. The Hana-Kimi manga has a very special place in my heart, so the cringey disappointment of the Korean drama adaptation still stings to this day... *shivers*

I also loved Hana Kimi... that's actually how I got into K-Drama... I saw somewhere that there was a korean remake and instantly want to check it out... only to be heartbroken by the mess that was the first episode.

The japanese version at least didn't take itself seriously but then the korean version just wanted all of it - the hilarious slap-stick and the seriousness and neither worked out for it.

I wondered recently if I should give it another try (because memory...), but seeing so many people agreeing with the statement that the korean version isn't good just flushed that idea out the pipe.

Congrats on graduating. But.... any significance to the absence of an "any jobs you have had" answer? Is some future "ever lived a kdrama moment" answer likely to involve job-hunting??

Good luck!

And where did you go to school that offered Korean Studies? I ask as an old Asian Studies major whose choices were China & Japan.

Since you've mentioned DBSK, suddenly I remember one of their MV Doushite (Kimi Wo Suki Ni Natte Shimattandarou). I just wonder if any K-Writer ever thought to write this kind of stories on 2017. Two childhood friends, grow up and hang out together, two friends drifting apart, two friends but one broken heart. At the end a guy friend witness his best friend marriage into someone else.

Nice to meet you, SailorJumun. Congratulations on your graduation!

Everybody correctly guessed that your favorite drama is My gf is a gumiho & hated drama is To the beautiful you (no doubts about that, that show never made any sense. Forget the girl supporting the guy, I didn't understand how cutting her hair short helped her pass as a boy because her face & attitude was literally screaming girl all the time.)

Hello fellow melo. My bias is Changsub!

Rewatching this just after reading SailorJumun's Q&A got me thinking that Changsub might just be her soulmate, and as his fan, I'm jealous. :D

I mean, in your video, he aced the sing Mirotic without lyrics challenged and knew all the lyrics by heart. And then, in another video, he also knew the lyrics for Sailor Moon by heart.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKP-4YqI34c&feature=youtu.be&t=303 (cc on for Eng subs)
That's literally SailorJumun's entire name. I'm so jealous.

changsub has so many unexpected charms. There's a reason he has the biggest fandom in btob, even more fans than Sungjae within the fandom. You'd think with his silly faces that he'd be an idiot, but he has the best memory in btob. He totally won the game in the vlive because of his insane memory. I love how Mirotic was supposed to be an advantage for sungjae, bc he's supposedly their biggest fan, but changsub recognized the song right away, and sang without looking at the lyrics like it's so easy. People who don't know him don't take him seriously, but there's a reason Sungjae respects him so much and talk to him about all the serious stuff. He's a lot more thoughtful and intelligent than haters give him credit for. He just doesn't show his serious side in public, because he wants to make his fans laugh and be happy. Totally boyfriend material.
I started to fall for him ever since I saw this post about him with kids. Seeing men being gentle with kids is my ultimate "catnip" http://pann-choa.blogspot.com/2016/10/enter-talk-idol-who-covers-kid-with-her.html
In every other Beatcom/The Beat video, you can find him with a kid. And there's always a fancam of him with a kid for every day they're in japan. And to top it off, he even skateboard. That's hot. Sob, why can't I find someone like him irl. Sigh.

Goodness me, I apologize for the late reply. I didn't expect any replies to my comment, nor did I expect that this thread turned into a BTOB Link Sharing Central. :D Must be ingrained into our fan-DNA to talk about BTOB as much as possible to anyone who would listen, which is usually no one. :D

You're right, Changsub is much more intelligent than many give him credit for :D
Did you know that he entered into Howon University Practical Music department at a ratio of 600:1? It's one of the most prestigious programs in Korea. There were 3000 applicants, and only 5 acceptances. Out of those 5, there were only 2 males, and both of them were BTOB members. Changsub and Hyunsik. This was not the usual "special admission" celebrities had. They entered in the normal admission process, because it was before they debuted as BTOB. Not only that, but Changsub quit his company BTOB Cube after a disagreement, then applied for university admission. He only found out that the other male who got admitted to the same program was a fellow trainee after admission. Apparently, they saw each other and were very surprised to see that they knew each other and used to be trainees from the same company before he quit. After he entered university, he decided to come back to Cube again, and that's when he debuted as BTOB. That story that the only 2 males from that program were later to become members of the same group BTOB is famous.

5

More on that:
http://btobmel.tumblr.com/post/119103139957/pann-btob-spec

You can just google it, and there will be many stories about it and BTOB and university.
BTOB is also famous that all of their members got accepted into universities without special admission, just regular admission. They're a very hard-working group, even if they appear to be jokesters. :D

2

I also found this subbed clip where the two members talked a little about the Admission Exam they took:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH6f7qdmM6o&feature=youtu.be&t=473

2

ve, if you like him with children, this clip where he talks about why he loves children so much will melt your heart :D

It starts at 01:09:35
http://www.vlive.tv/video/17888?channelCode=FD737

Changsub has the best quotes, truly :) Even his message to his future wife is heart-melting: "Even when you become a grandma, all wrinkly and ugly, you are still my wife."

He treats children and women the best, truly :) In a hidden camera, all the other members tried to get out of the situation when the "boyfriend" of a fan was being forceful with her, and Changsub was the only one who was firm and confronted him directly to protect the girl. Many became his fan after watching that prank. Although I became his fan because of his voice :D

kkkkk that interview was so fun to watch. not their fan (sowie) but i know i always have a fun time when i stumble on their vids. they're like suju, beast or infinite, not a fan but i still watch them for the laughs. they dont even try to fun, they just are cuz u can tell how much they fun they have spending time together. their rapport remind me of crude play tbh.. kkkk. i remember seeing this vid somewhere about how btob was going to debut as a band and not a dance group (could be another group, not sure) so had that happened, btob would literally be crude play real life heee. fun seeing so many drama fans loving them, sungjae career taking off in dramas helped tons. kkkk.

I apologize for the late reply. It's alright, you don't need to be their fan, I'm just happy that you appreciate them. :D
You had the group right. :D BTOB was meant to debut as a band before their company changed the concept. This is why all members play at least one instruments, and half of them play several. And over half of them composes for the group.
Eunkwang plays classical piano.
Minhyuk can play little bit of guitar and piano.
Changsub plays the drums, guitar, and piano (and does very well with a recorder :) )
Hyunsik can play the guitar extremely well, the piano very well, and the bass.
Peniel plays the guitar very well.
Ilhoon can play the piano, drums, and little bit of guitar.
Sungjae can play the piano, and the guitar.

Impressive right? :D
They're a very musically inclined group.

A compilation of all the members playing various instruments
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LkpEPJnOM8

The clip shows only their skills partially, but enough to give you an idea.

7

Here's another clip with members playing instruments with a good bit of Peniel's guitar playing :D

3

Hyunsik playing the guitar. If you scroll down his instagram, there will be more throughout his feed :)

A fan compiled subbed clips of the members playing the piano too!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riyLcbOzysw&list=UU0fgmn4cayI1Eg4hFt3QFhw

4

And finally, my favorite :D A BTOB casual jam session with members just singing whatever songs come to mind, and others joining in the harmony or with instruments:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggDfWFQslIA

So you see, they are Crude Play in real life too. :D

10

The full uncut Jam session can be found with subs on Vlive:

http://www.vlive.tv/video/16662?channelCode=FD737

I'm very glad for this thread here so I can share my love for this group with others. Thank you to all of you BTOB lovers for this :)

5

This was all sorts of great. Thanks for sharing. I just spent over an hour, no regrets. The very last two minutes has me doubling in tears literally lmao, I couldn't breathe. :'D "Sarang---HAE!!!" So funny. lol. Highlight of the whole vid for me. They literally saved best for last.

Anyway, the 7 of them singing Mirotic was so great, especially seeing the 2 rappers harmonizing and singing like real vocalists (and is that Eunkwang making all those crazy adlibs off-screen? I recognize his voice, he was so loud even without the mic, maybe?).
They most def have the best vocals among the 3rd gen idols. I'm saying this as an ARMY. I'm really proud of BTS live singing skills, but gotta admit, BTOB as a group is unbeatable. It's insane that their rappers can sing like that and their vocal line is one of the strongest. But it's ok, BTS dance skills and perf and stage presence rocks like no other so I'm not too jealous (only a little bit). :)

(and if you go a little further to 4:02 mark, he'll do it acapella with no effort at all)

He's just messing around for laughs with mirotic (or should I say "Jumun"?)

You have to understand there's two of him:
There's the him who screeches out gfriend and Blackpink like a banshee on drugs, and then there's the real him singing with so much sensitivity you can't help but FEEL.

So happy to see btob being loved on DB. Not gonna lie, it's unexpected. They get slept on by international fans BIG TIME, as popular as they are in korea.

Different voices he has:

It was thanks to your "fangirling" in the first and subsequent recaps of the drama that I took notice of this precious little gem. I had no intention to watch it at first, because the cast was full of unfamiliar names, and young to boot. I would have very much regretted not watching this with my husband. We had the sweetest time together, watching this drama. The main couple made us reflect on our relationship. Watching them being sweet with each other brought us back to our honeymoon phase (we even planned and went out for a picnic date soon after we watched episode 16). The music from the drama became the background music in our home too.

I would actually have been surprised if @sailorjumun's favorite recap WASN'T Liar! :P Congratulations on graduating! :)

Rom-coms with an element of fantasy is what I love too! Pinocchio is an all- time favourite. Also, 'Thanks for the Memories' by Cecelia Ahern is one of my favourite books- it had a tiny element of magic in a good-old romantic story... Boy Meets World was so good! And yes- it doesn't get old ever!

Is it just me or that mutant baby drama sounds really watchable!?! It might just be that introducing a gumiho to a storyline instantly makes it interesting. Or it might just be that I am one of the very few people who did not hate To the beautiful You (It wasn't the best but- Lee Hyun Woo's giddy smile, Kang Ha Neul, 2 episodes of Kim Woo Bin, plus a school setting- works well for me).

ANyway, nice to 'meet' you sailorjumun :)

I can see why it would be an English Major's favorite drama to recap XD, all the characterization, the intricate relationships, the solid layered writing would be great to analyze. No wonder you had to fangirl and ramble over them ;) There are dramas I fangirl over but feel guilty for liking them because they're not technically good. This one, you can fangirl without guilt, even as an English major XDD The more you analyze, the more you find reasons to like it. XD

I love the slight fantasy element too.
I can't believe you called Inha "unni." I'm old, but I feel even older. I love Park Shin Hye but she's like a baby to me.
And as you said, the drama had a sweet and deceptively simple story, but shone in the way it was confidently told. Unlike many dramas struggling with being uneven, extremely good in parts, and not-so in others, this one had the distinction of being very even in quality in all aspects, execution, music, characters, etc. It did everything it wanted to achieve at least well, and surprisingly exceeded expectations in the many facets it chose to explore.

Nice to get to know you SailorJumun!

I was SO obsessed with Sailor Moon when I was younger. Everything revolved around it. It also started a 10 year long anime/manga obsession.

I'm seeing love for TLAHL and TVXQ and BTOB in the thread <3
I would be jealous about SailorJumun's "soulmate" connection with changsub, except she has jaejoong so I feel safe. Phew. ;) Actually, he's so not my type, I don't even think him hot... but the more I find out about his character and kindness, the more I fall for him. Help.
Becoming Inha would be so much of a nightmare for me, I think she would be admirable, but I have no idea how to live like her. I mostly tell white lies, but I still tell them.
Once in a blue moon, I go find the 5-10 minutes clip of Titanic's door scene, and then cry my heart out. You're not alone.

Me too! I can't stand medical dramas
Urgh
Its a rather selfish reason though
Especially Rom Dr Kim. with all the talk of saving lives and how they were doctors to save lives - i Just couldn't
It always guilt-tripped me because I'll find myself asking myself - "what are you doing with your time while your medical textbooks are waiting for you. You Have to save lives!"
If I continued watching it or other med dramas I would have had to quit dramaland.
But I don't want too!!??

Yes, they're definitely super underrated in the international community. As an inner circle, I always complain about how Winner is underrated af, but they definitely has it worse. At least Winner can get tens of millions of views (still not enough if we compared), but their mvs don't even crack 10 million views after months, or 5 million views for some mvs. It's sad. I try to watch them whenever I remember to support, even if I'm not part of the fandom. Underrated and talented groups have to band together.

omg, thank you. Cries. IC is one of the nicest fandom.

They're criminally underrated, imo. People complain and complain about how lyrics in kpop make no sense, and then you've got their song "It's Okay" with some of the best lyrics in kpop: no one is watching their mvs for the song. Right.

The sad part is that It's Okay was during the time when they already starting to rise because of School 2015 and Sungjae getting big. Meanwhile, they spent YEARS in nugudom before Sungjae got famous.

Look at this chart below.

Cries.

They have the record for longest time it took for a group to win on a show, no one even come close. Second place is 2/3 of theirs. Makes me cry when I think of all the time they suffered with no one paying attention, and still persevered again and again and again and never gave up.

There are not many of us international Melodies, but we try our best to be vocal in expressing our love for them to compensate for it.

(Hmmm? the comment didn't get through, I don't even see a moderating message? Testing again with the link...)

I took notice of Sungjae bc he was known as a SIG lookalike. Loved Reply 1997 (best drama of my life), and searched for everything about SIG and Eunji (still ship them in my heart). Eunji and her group Apink were close to BTOB like siblings, so I got to know the boys and became a semi-casual fan ever since.
I've got burnt many times becoming a fan of some groups and had to drop them because of disappointing scandals. I've gotten cautious about liking any group but haven't once regretted liking BTOB. They never made me regret stanning them, precious boys. Sungjae's dramas are like the entry pass to BTOB. He always promotes them whenever he goes and tries to get them on shows.

His infallible and unchanging loyalty to BTOB is why I've kept liking him as a noona fan (I am not attracted to him, if that makes sense? I have a "phobia" for younger men. SIG on the other hand... different story. Oppa~~~ ).

Yay, this works!! So the problem was the shortcut link... Good to know.

Another compilation of Sungjae promoting BTOB's talent every where he goes. It's the reason why BTOB is able to take off as a group and didn't simply become known as the "Sungjae's group."

And the hyungs love him just as much and misses him when he has to go work on dramas

(sorry that all the vids are in kr (but the essence is understandable), it's bc BTOB doesn't have i-fans, so i-fans have to be resourceful and have gotten used to looking up kr-vids. My kr skills shot through the roof in the few years after becoming their fan.)

Ok, one last video.. I promise. lol.

(There's a part 2 too, if you look for it, I'm cheating lol)

Sorry for the spam, it's just so rare to see i-Melody that I'm yay happy rite now to find some. Everyone I know are fans of other groups like exo, big bang, bts, seventeen and all the popular groups. As expected, people on DB have good taste. My inner fan heart has been unleashed. I don't talk about them normally because there's no one to talk to, I just quietly buy their music and use my money to talk. Perks of noona fans is that we all have jobs. lol.

I'm a fan of your recaps for your favorite drama to recap! We're connected. lol.

Nice to meet you, so does a minor in Korea mean that you can more or less speak it?

LJS had a busy busy year, but also won the Daesang so I'm so proud of him!! Take him out to a celebrator party, and make him pay, because I'm pretty sure he can afford it. lol. In short, make him pamper you instead lol.

Have you considered going to Korea? I've only been there briefly (several weeks) and it really helped when you have to practice it all day.

I know almost nothing significant about Kpop and have been enjoying the past 3hours or so reading up on all the groups and songs mentioned in this post. I don't know if I've become a kpop fan just yet (too soon, or perhaps too late, considering my age), but it has been so very entertaining. I got a closer understanding to why it is a worldwide phenomenon. Fascinating how exposed their lives and personalities are. It is almost like following drama characters instead of just 'artists' like the western ones.

Anyway, I like how much of an unapologetic Sailor Moon fan you are with your name and avatar. :D I thought Jumun was an obscure character from when I stopped watching that show! (I had trouble remembering all the new "planets" after Neptune.)

You know, you're supposed to make the mutant drama sound horrific, not to sell it so well I now want this to be real so bad!!! I'm already casting in my head, I hope someone important reads your post and gets to it asap.
