Tension in a garden of flowers for The King Loves

More stills and a gorgeous new poster for Goryeo-era sageuk The King Loves have been released. Adapted by Healer’s Song Ji-nah, this novel-based drama features trending star Im Shi-wan (Misaeng) as the titular king who falls in love with Yoon-ah (The K2). She is also pursued by Hong Jong-hyun (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo), the best friend and greatest rival of the king. These three become engaged in a high-stakes struggle to win power and love that is fraught with both pain and passion.

Described as Janus-faced, Im Shi-wan plays the crown prince with a dual personality, seeming virtuous to most people, but with an ambitious thirst inside. His best friend, Hong Jong-hyun’s character, is a royal nobleman with the highest and purest of lineages, whose hot-bloodedness leads him to love and pursue his objectives passionately. They both fall for Yoon-ah, the daughter of the richest man in Goryeo, and end up fighting to both gain her love and the throne.

In the beautiful poster, the copy reads: “The story of me who loved you more than myself.” Im Shi-wan stares longingly at Yoon-ah, who is looking away from him, as is Hong Jong-hyun, whose expression is also serious and broody. It may be telling that everyone is looking at someone else and that no one is meeting anyone’s gaze; the mood is tense despite their beautiful garden surroundings.

Similarly, unlike previous stills that showed the happy friendship amongst the trio, the recently released stills show Yoon-ah’s not-so-pleasant first meeting with Im Shi-wan. As she tries to grab him by the collar, he just smiles, holding her by her wrists against a tree. The different sides of Im Shi-wan’s two-faced character already seem like night and day.

MBC’s fully pre-produced historical melodrama The King Loves will begin airing in mid-July after Lookout on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The poster is beautiful, but all three of them should take the non-drowsy formula of allergy medication instead.

Not sure if I'll tune in, but I must admit -- the pretty is strong with this one. I am shallow, I know.

From what I read before, there was supposed to be a love story between the King and his best friend, Hong Jong-Hyun's character. That the King is also in love with him. But so far, I have not anything that would suggest that part. I don't see it in the trailer or posters If there's no such thing, then I don't need to watch it anymore. Even if this is Im Shi-wan and Song Ji-nah's comeback drama.

I'm currently watching 7DQ, which has the same tragic love story. So another one seems too much already.

Bisexuality? Too obscene for kdrama. Gotta keep it to subtextual homo-erotic fanservice.

Oh...if thats the case, this story reminds me of the movie "the frozen flower"...its not exactly the same but in the movie the king is married to a yuan princess and he is in love with his body guard (who is also actually his lover)...and the guard and the queen fell in love with each other something like that.

I'm going to check this out for Im Siwan. Not a fan of Yoona and the posters aren't the most appealing. But Siwan was amazing in Misaeng and I'd love to see him in something else.

Like, the costumes and their makeup just make me feel this is more a Chinese production than Korean production.

This is Goryeo era which is heavily influenced by China so I guess, that's what makes it feel more Chinese than Korean. Even their hanbok at the time looks more similar to Hanfu than Hanbok. And they're so beautiful! <3

The trend of sageuk nowadays must be love triangle as the main plot from Hwarang, Ruler, SDQ to this drama. The only difference is different setting /period. We already got many love triangle in modern drama, now it is also a must have in sageuk. Well let's see if this drama will do better than Ruler and SDQ this year as romance sageuk, and I'm going to exclude Rebel since Rebel is clearly at different level.

The poster is so bland for my taste, the color and theme are not mysteriously encouraging...but I will set aside my judgment and will watch few episodes for the sake of the leads.

I had a bit of a laugh reading the comments here. I am not a fan of Yoon-Ah per se.. but to me this still is kinda interesting and beautiful enough to make me interested.

A huge fan of Im Si-wan's acting from Misaeng. Another male lead looks interesting too so strange enough but I think I'm going to check this one out despite my non-preference for historical dramas.

Loving Hong Jong-hyun stills look so manly. The poster is not working for me, too much gradation it hurts my eyes.

I'm excited for this drama but then it will be the end of Lookout aaah.

In the books, the three leads are described as really beautiful but I think Won, the crown prince, is deemed the prettiest out of the three lol...

The poster looks gorgeous and looks more like a Chinese drama. Still not sure if I'll be tuning into this one though since I'm not really a big fan of saeguk dramas unless its really good. Best of luck for this one!

Sometimes I was thinking that the title does not fit the story because the King a.k.a. Won is not written as to be devotedly in love with San, the female lead. So I was later thinking that it was an ironic title, but then, it could be that "Wang" (King) in the title refers to all three main characters being in love, since they all have the surname Wang (at least in the novels).

Not impressed by the posters, really can't tell what they're trying to portray from their expressions. I just got a feeling they're gonna butcher Hong Jong Hyun character but he's gonna steal the show anyway.

He's the only reason I'll try the show. He'd better have a lot of scenes. Have a feeling this drama will be predictable and I'll watch as long as I can for Hong Jong hyun.

How come that they did not reveal the writer in the first place. as far as I know, Song Ji Na is very particular with actors/actresses on her writings.... But with these castings, im not sure if she's really in favor of this.. Kinda suspicious... Bringing her name here all of a sudden, all I know, this was supposedly be airing early this year and lots of delays already...
Hoping Yoona will not put a lot of hair accessories.. Because of her tiny face, she's like; A HAIR WITH A FACE..
