The Water God surveys his kingdom in all his divine splendor

Who’s the prettiest of them all? Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), that’s who! In the latest teaser for Bride of the Water God 2017, we get a glimpse of Nam Joo-hyuk in all his regal trappings as the water god who descends to Earth and meets a human. That human is played by Shin Se-kyung (Girl Who Sees Smells), and her family have been his predestined servants for generations.

In the 15-second teaser, exotic music plays as Nam Joo-hyuk’s ash-blue locks are swept away by the wind. He opens his darkly lined eyes, places a stone onto a small pyramid-shaped artifact, and surveys his pristine white kingdom. In his one-line voiceover, he says, “I am the ruler of the water kingdom, Ha-baek.”

This spinoff drama is based on an original manhwa set in olden times, in which a girl was sacrificed to the water god in order to save her village from a drought. However, this drama will take place in the present, and the heroine doesn’t seem like she’ll be such a willing sacrifice, because she’s supposed to be a doctor who is a strict realist. But seeing this teaser, I can imagine she’ll be in for a shock if Ha-baek ever takes her to his beautiful kingdom.

I wonder if the other gods, played by Krystal (She’s So Lovable) and Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young), will also be as pretty in their full divine regalia… But I know Im Joo-hwan (Oh My Ghostess) will definitely be able to rock a suit, playing a resort CEO. I’m still unsure of how the story will play out with the current (mostly green) cast and modern setup, but all the gorgeous promo is slowly winning me over.

Monday-Tuesday fantasy romance drama Bride of the Water God 2017 will premiere on tvN on July 3.

i loved the manhwa... it's going to be hard to watch a drama with the same name and not be actual the characters that i liked in the manhwa... like what about chibi habaek?

Speaking of which: The eyeliner ruined that drama. Seemed the director wasnt too confident at Jisung's acting the he had to add eyeliner to it. I think Jisung can show the personality change without the added aesthetics.

Hope BOTWG goes well.

I am not sure... I thought this would all play out in modern times. The fact that she and her family are his servants is very different from the manhwa version (I know it is not a remake but just inspired by it)... Hope it is not too much a copy of goblin. Habaek is not so blue in the manhwa... Ahahhahah

Goblin was not mystical like in that poster.

Hopefully it won't copy. That's the slowest and sloppiest drama I've ever watched. The story was too predictable. I am currently watching it and now on episode 13, I really don't understand the hype of that drama. The acting wasn't great too. It msy not be a popular opinion but I wonder they won too many awards in Baeksang.

Better be this drama is a better quality one.

Nam Joo Hyuk looks beautiful as always. I'm still confused about the whole plot premise, but seeing that new teaser definitely shows how pretty everything is. Then, I am a hardcore fan of any fantasy kdrama. Hope NJH and SSK due well in this new series.

Same here. I hope they have a really good director because like it or not, these two are not that versatile. They are not like other seasoned actors who can show a wide range of emotions just from their facial expressions. I love NJH and i think he has potential but i am also being realistic here. I also think that SSK is lovely and can be so much better. I hope this drama will bring out the best in them. Fighting!!

I want the whole thing to be like this now!!!!! It's so pretty! He's so pretty!! Maybe we would all die of prettiness overload, so for our own safety they updated the setting to the present. Yep. I'm going with that. Otherwise I am just salty over the change.

Yay! For another fantasy drama! This looks magical. I just hope the CGI doesn't look too cheesy. We all know it's fake so they should make it look as ethereal as possible. Story is interesting but familiar enough if you read a lot of mangas/manhwas or watch a lot of Chinese dramas. Nam Joo-hyuk is watchable and I like Shin Se-kyung. I'm glad they're doing it in current time so there is so much more contrast in his world vs her world. And, my daughter doesn't like to watch saguek with me so this drama we can watch together.

Ohhh woww... That hair color and the guyliner are very well done and suits him, doesn't look costumey at all. Or maybe it's because NJH really carries it ♥

Now I really want the drama to be based on the original timeline - I think the costumes would have added more lushness to the fantasy and where (maybe) we get to see the gods in their regalia often like that above

I can only assume budget was the reasoning behind the change. Production cost for a lush and beautiful fantasy would be high.

If it's so, too bad. I think the sageuk setting would have really complemented the "gods" world, like Arang did. Hoping they pull it off in modern setting

Required fields are marked *

Also, you can get sponsors for everything little thing that's in a modern setting. Difficult if not impossible to do for the original, $$$ad but true ?.

1

Required fields are marked *

I think it is because of budget as well. If this is written by Kim Eun Sook and casted top stars, maybe there will be more investors.

A couple of years ago, a good friend of mine and I would always go by a store that had blue wigs on display in its window. We'd giggle and then question where one would wear blue-colored hair.

Why, in a fantasy kdrama of course! And Nam Joo-hyuk is showing us how! Clearly, my friend and I were clueless at the time.

I'm not familiar with the manhwa, but the teaser is making things look interesting.

Oh boy, he certainly is very pretty (ha, I remember saying this a lot when I was first introduced to K-Pop and even w/ some K-dramas)! I was surprised to see this teaser's thumbnail on YT yesterday because I knew this drama would be modernized, but it's nice to know that we'll still get to see the water god in his true form before he transform into a human.

Eeek, I feel bad for the sacrificed girl in the original story. What happens to her? What does the water god do with/to her? Does she really save her village from drought?

Did NOT know that Krystal and Gong Myung are playing gods, too!? Ha, I guess since I wrote this drama off after finding out the cast, I really don't know much about it. Darn, it's kinda looking and sounding quite enticing now...

Also forgot to add that the part about Shin Se-kyung's character being part of the family that's been destined to serve the water god for generations remind me of Deok-hwa's family taking care of the Goblin.

yeah if you look closly at 0.04 the palace seems to be lake palace Udaipur, India. At least I feel its eerily similar.
I think they chose lake palace because it is a floating palace surrounded by water bodies on all sides!
I know its definitely photo shopped but it still make me so happy! Even Octopussy was shot there.

This was shoot in India (Udaipur)... the only cast who went there were Joo Hyuk, Park Kyu Sun and one comedianne.. other characters were not included so sorry to burst your thought bubbles but no costumes for other cast :))

Also, their trip to India was cut short due to the weather (according to Soompi) so this scene will be like half of an episode only.. you can check the bts from instagram and they are all taken in Korea :))) judging the bts, it is way too faaaaaar from the manhwa! This teaser is just their way to attract the manwha fans
