While You Were Sleeping gets a September premiere date on SBS

We hadn’t seen any updates for this show in a while, so I’m glad that we’re hearing more about SBS’s upcoming supernatural-lite legal show While You Were Sleeping. The drama reunites writer Park Hye-ryun (I Hear Your Voice, Pinocchio) with Lee Jong-seok (W—Two Worlds) and Suzy (Uncontrollably Fond), and SBS has announced that the drama has secured its time slot and will premiere this September.

Lee Jong-seok will play a newbie prosecutor who will work with Suzy’s character to prevent the accidents that the unemployed heroine has premonitions of. Shin Jae-ha (Wanted, Page Turner), Go Sung-hee (Spy, My Beautiful Bride), Lee Sang-yub (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair), and Jung Hae-in (Night Light) round out the supporting cast. I have reservations about Suzy and Go Sung-hee, but with this writer and the PD’s previous works (Doctors, You From Another Star), I’m trying not to let my expectations run wild.

While You Were Sleeping will be 100 percent pre-produced, and plans to complete filming by the end of June. Out of all the prosecutors running around in dramaland lately, I’ve been looking forward to Lee Jong-seok’s take on the profession the most. I Hear Your Voice and Pinocchio are two of my favorite shows, and when I heard that Lee Jong-seok would be reuniting with writer Park Hye-ryun for a third time, this went straight to the top of my must-watch list. Even Suzy, sporting a bob for the role, being announced as the female lead couldn’t dampen my expectations (much). He does have a knack for selling the romance with his heroines, so I’m going to be glass-half-full for now.

While You Were Sleeping will be a 16-episode drama, and is scheduled to premiere in the Wednesday-Thursday slot after Suspicious Partner and its follow-up drama Reunited Worlds end their runs.

Lee Jeong Seok teaming up with writer Park Hye Ryun is something you can't miss. I Hear your Voice and Pinocchio were big hits and I can't wait to see another one of their dramas. Although I'm not the biggest fan of Suzy, the plot premise and lead actor look great.

The last time I liked Suzy was in Dream High, and that coincidentally was a drama also by Pafk Hye Run, so I'm keeping my hopes high for now. It's been a while since I've had anything good to look forward go in terms of kdrama's; plus if this writer could actually get people to like Park Shin Hye then this shouldn't be too hard, atleast Suzy is great at kissing and LJS has always done amazing kiss scenes so atleast in terms of chemistry there should be something new to look forward too

Yeah I have hopes because of the points you mentioned here as well. I think I didn't notice how lacking Suzy was until her later dramas. In Dream High she was cute and charming enough, with a role that was able to work around her lack of acting skill. I just thought she was inexperienced at acting then.

Unlike some others I always liked Park Shin-hye but often found her characters annoying and insufferably mousy. Pinocchio was such a refreshing change and really elevated my opinion of her.

I think even though Suzy's acting is meh, she's cute and pretty enough that I think she can be okay with the right material and co-stars. LJS has had a pretty good track record with chemistry with co-stars too (romantic or otherwise). Hoping for the best!

I am not a fan of Suzy either, but maybe it happes like with PSY... I loved her in Pinocchio, and only in Pinocchio... Maybe then, because of this writer, and LJS, come on! He is just perfect everywhere!!! (Although I heard, not much in Dr. Stranger.... I did not want to watch that one because of the recaps and comments)... But other than that, he is just Gold!!!

Dr Stranger was just a bad show in general, so I'm not sure it was anything to do with Lee Jung Seok, lol. He probably did the best with what he was given.

maybe this is not a very popular opinion, but Dr. Stranger is LJS's [so far] best-acted role. He was able to showcase his versatility in portraying a genius-but-goofy/playful character, and next turn into this passionate lover obsessed with finding his girlfriend. I really think he went above and beyond to elevate Park Hoon's character!

I really liked I Hear Your Voice so I'm looking forward to catching While You Were Sleeping when it airs. I don't think I've seen Suzy in anything yet but Lee Jong-seok is always worth watching.

LJS always picks up interesting projects. Can't help the high expectation, plus he's reuniting and working with professional he worked before.

In Lee Jong-seok we trust.

Gonna be glass-half-full about this, too!

I love Suzy's new 'do, but then again, girl's just pretty and would look good with any kind of 'do. As for Lee Jong-seok, he almost never disappoints (me), so of course I'm looking forward to seeing him in action again. Premonitions and having psychic abilities (That's so Raven, anyone?) are oh so intriguing to me, so I can't wait to be on the edge of my seat with this one.

Would love for there to be a psychic heroine in dramaland one day! Can that be the next drama trend? Now I'm craving a K-drama with a superhuman heroine. *cues Strong Woman Do Bong-soon OST* She's a superpower girl~!

with Suzy it's better to keep expectations very low, also standards for what is considered "good" acting for her are much lower than for other actresses.

UF showed that you really can't expect more of someone who is only cast in dramas because of PPL.

Same here. I'm getting a mixed vibe of Remember (Yoo Seung Ho) and Girl Who Sees Smell, and other dramas I don't want to bother to remember/identify.
But it's Lee Jong Suk, so it's still something to look forward to. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be like Uncontrollably Fond with Suzy in it (i couldn't finish that drama even if Kim Woo Bin was in it).

Dang. I loved I Hear Your Voice and I enjoy Lee Jong Seok's acting, but I have a very hard time with Suzy's acting. She continually yanks me out of the story. She looks lovely, as usual, though. I'll probably keep an eye on the show and monitor the general response here on Dramabeans. I really do like this writer--so much heart.

I've only seen a few things with Suzy and it looks like she's fine as long as she has a good director and writer on the team. Plus we know that LJS will be top-notch. I mean I'm liking Seohyun's acting so far in Thief-nom Thief-nim so here's hoping...

Lee Jeong Soek and I can hear you voice team means solid drama for me. I'll tune in. As for Suzy, I hope she can turn in a decent performance. She has been enough dramas, people do get better with more and more exposure to a certain craft and practice. I mean look at UEE, from HS to Marriage Contract, she figured some things out and did wonders. So here's hoping, we get a good drama.

Excited but trying not to be, primarily because Suzy is the female lead. I find Suzy, as an actress, to be tolerable and serviceable but nothing to write home about. That being said, I actually really liked her in Dream High (that being one of my favorite K-Dramas) but only because I felt that the role suited someone of her acting level. Her character wasn't required to go all out and so it was perfectly fine. Not to mention Kim Soo Hyun did such a fantastic job of picking up where the rest of the cast fell short.

However, in this drama, I don't think it will be enough for her to be just tolerable. It's going to be a supernatural show and she's playing a woman who has premonitions. She'll have to pull out every skill in the bag (which...) to make us suspend our disbelief and fall head first into the story. I'm super glad Lee Jong-seok is the lead, he's a really good actor and so hopefully anything she falls short on he can pick up. Though it shouldn't have to be that way.

(Side note: Dream High is the only k-drama I've seen Suzy in and that is what I'm basing my comment on. If she has improved in other dramas please let me know. I don't mind being wrong because that just means I actually DON't have to hold back on my excitement.)

I'll watch anything with Lee Jong-seok in it, even if he acts alone lol. That is because he chooses interesting subjects, while the plot may not be tempting for me but his portrayal of the character is eye catching.(I liked him in I hear your voice which is another drama on my "dramas that are popular in dramaland but didn't appeal to me" list; I know I'm weird :-p)
Not a Suzy fan.

I hope this drama is as good as their previous collabs, the law aspect makes me think back to I Hear Your Voice but this time Lee Jong Suk will be on the prosecutor side and Suzy's the one with the powers XD. Still not sure what I think of Suzy as the lead but who knows she could surprise me. Either way Lee Jong Suk and Park Hye Ryun's writing is a big enough pull to reel me in for the ride!

If Lee Kyung Hee wasn't able to bring her magic in UF for Suzy, maybe Park Hye Ryun can instead? Well I don't particularly excited to these leads, so maybe gonna check it some parts as I like Lee Sang Yeob.

Yesterday I saw like, three different articles about when this would be done filming, and every single one gave a different estimate. First or second week of June! end of June! sometime in July! I think they don't know and are just hoping to finish as soon as possible. (They have time, anyway, if it doesn't air until September.)

Looking forward to another Park Hye Ryun drama, and also more Lee Jong Suk (my favorite actor--he can literally do anything). Really hoping that the rest of it measures up to those high standards.

Suzy in this show makes me very very nervous for the show. Hated UF (admittantly, for other reasons too and not just for Suzy...but she really was ine of the worst things that happened to that drama)..but stuck through only to watch KWB. And now KWB has cancer in real life...i know not related topics, but sinks my heart everytime i think about it.

As for Suzy, I am willing to cut her some slack. She was watchable in both Dream High and Gu Family Book. If the writer, who I think has written some great heroines so far, can give her a wellwritten character that suits her I am not too worried.
Especially as I know LJS has amazing chemistry with pretty much anyone, I feel like they can make it work!

Yay finally we have release's info, I am looking forward to watching this drama since I knew about LJS and the team behind it (er, minus Suzy).

I love LJS's previous work (School 2013, IHYV, Pinocchio and his performace in Doctor stranger even though the drama was bad, I haven't watched W yet but will soon) he's one of my top actors so my hopes are high especially when PD and writers have done good dramas.

About Suzy, man, dramaland gods help her. I mean I don't like her (I started DH, barely made it through ep 1 and half of ep 2 since I read it is good I can't get on board) I watched her in Big and some ep of UF and I don't think she's good. I hope LJS gets the best out of her. I mean he managed to get good kissing scenes out of Park Shin Hye's frozen lips. If she's dating LMH she should at least get acting lessons from him, something should stick onto her. ^^

For those who didn't watched Doctor Stranger, I did and suffered along with the recappers (@headsno2 and @gummimochi) till the end, and that show was bad, but his acting was actually one of the few things it had. So yes, even in a bad situation he's done a great job.

Can't wait.
