Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 17-23, 2017

I can barely keep my head above water with all these new premieres, which means a slew of new numbers and a slew of new conclusions we can draw any given week—half the fun of looking at ratings at all is the fishbowl effect, because no matter how much we love our faves, we can’t will numbers into existence. We can watch all day, and our clicks don’t matter to the Great Aggregator, but still, there’s that fun rush when our faves are doing well despite our lack of interference, isn’t there?

But with the ever-changing landscape of dramaland, we don’t get too long to dwell on any show, and now it’s anyone’s guess as to which of these new dramas will leave a lasting impression or fade into oblivion. We had School 2017, part of the long-running franchise, premiere on KBS to mediocre numbers that turned disappointing on Tuesday, though to be fair, all the competition took a dive with the finale of My Sassy Girl (*spits and turns around in a circle three times to ward off bad spirits/dramas*) taking up first place at 11.4%.

New sageuk The King Loves saw a drop between Monday and Tuesday, but still remained in second place, while Bride of the Water God 2017 is proving unable to recreate the success tvN once enjoyed with their Monday-Tuesday timeslot. It’s not a failure by any means, but it’s not pulling in the kinds of numbers that used to be par for the course on tvN.

Over in the middle of the week, Man Who Dies to Live took over top spot at nearly 10%, followed by Reunited Worlds, which is pulling in decent-to-good numbers. For its part, Seven Day Queen is at least staying above 5%, which must be a bit heartening for the cast and crew involved.

But it’s on the weekend that we’ve got the biggest surprise: Woman of Dignity took a jump from 6.9% last week to 8.9%, which is a huge deal for JTBC. The more dramatic, the better, right?

I'm happy for Seven Day Queen for getting more than 6% rating rather than just stays at 4%. I thought The Best Hit would do better for its last episodes, but I guess I'm hoping for too much. Anyway, I'm happy for School 2017, The King Loves and Reunited Worlds. I think The King Loves can break Ruler's rating, ay? Let's just hope for better ratings next week.

I can't believe I'd be happy over a show hitting 6%, but here we are. I hope Seven Day Queen maintains those numbers or (much better) increases in ratings. I'm hoping it hits at least 7% for its final episodes.

The ratings are low overall. All of them barely break 15%. I expect Falsify to have really good rating next week.

Woman of Dignity gonna break 10% soon, there is still half way to go. Such a good year for JTBC. Just blink watch the whole series, its really cool.

Well, My Sassy Girl did really well despite criticism, many dramas can only dream about those ratings - Seven Day Queen, for example. I know some people who loved My Sassy Girl so I'm not really surprised that drama had good ratings.

I enjoyed MSG and loved some parts of it, but I think the rating is also mainly contributed by Joo Won's & Oh Yeon Seo's fans ❤ In my opinion, among the reason why they casted JW and replace the rookie actress with OYS because it may end up with lower rating if they stick with original actress.

I've said that the drama is not entirely hopeless but it's not a drama which Joo Won and Oh Yeon Seo needed to be in. Why did Joo Won choose this as his pre-army project? Such fluff as compared to his earlier works.

This is the drama that JW and OYS supposed to do back to at least 5 years ago. I think Gaksital set a very high standard for his career. Somehow I wished Gaksital would be his last project before went to military service though , and he did all mediocre / average shows before, so after military he can be more selective in his projects.

I think Joo Won's role in Good Doctor was pretty good even if not many enjoyed the drama as much.

Ratings isn't my priority at all when I assess a drama or an actor. I'd take Joo Won in Tomorrow Cantabile anytime over him in My Sassy Girl. Same for Oh Yeon So. I think she was absolutely fabulous in Come Back, Ahjussi even though it tanked real bad.

I've read that Joo Won fans blame his drama choices on his agency. Whoever or whatever it is, the choices are admittedly not good.

6

@outofthisworld
I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoyed Good Doctor. I thought Joo Won did a brillant job portraying an autistic surgeon.

7

@ravennightstar I enjoyed the show too! I was referring to beanies and recappers who didn't like the show as much. It was quite simple but heartwarming. I liked a few of the stories in there and of course Si On was quite hilarious too.

2

@outofthisworld
Ah ok!
I actually wasn't following it on DB back then. Just watched the drama without actually knowing if it was popular or not. I had to watch it because of Moon Chae Won (she's one of my fav actresses) and Joo Won of course. It was very heartwarming! And I remember crying a lot because of the way Joo Won portrayed his character and all the struggles he had to face to be respected, and believed and to just be himself and do what he liked to do.

2

Yes, his other projects were better than My Sassy Girl, although I didn't finish most of them.

His agency Huayi Brothers is the one who produced /co produced this drama and Joo Won is one the biggest actors in this agency. The original actress who was supposed to be the sassy Princess is also from the same agency. I think it makes sense why he did this drama- because it is his agency and due to relationship for years, he can't simply reject it. ?

3

@ravennightstar I've always like when actors take on a role which are opposite of the ones they've been acclaimed for. That contrast between his role in Gaksital and Good Doctor was great and IMO he nailed both. With such accomplishments, I find his role in MSG regressive.

2

@seralovestteobokki Oh yes! I must have forgotten...so Huayi has a hand in the production! *SMH* He's not going to advance at this rate if he keeps doing his agency's projects. Did they ever produce any good dramas?

1

@outofthisworld I'm not sure. I think maybe this is their first Korean drama. I don't know how long his term will be with Huayi but changing his agency might be a good decision for his career. Huayi might be a good agency for rising stars. Park Hye Soo is under this agency, so looking at how her career is, I think Huayi is doing a good job for her. Choi Tae Joon recently signed up with them, so this might be a good path for his career as well.

Joo Won probably is like Lee Jun Ki, who is not too selective in their projects and might not really care if it is not really good projects. I think some actors/actressess just like that, they are just enjoying acting as their passion and don't want to pressure themselves.

0

Not Choi Tae Joon too!

I'm afraid I got to disagree with this one. I want actors to be selective of projects as much as they can.

0

No worries, I don't agree either. I just stated based on my observation for some actors who I believe has that position to be selective.. As fans, we surely want them to be selective and the best projects. But that's their career choice, just like ordinary ppl, not everyone is too amibitious in their career path, that's what I'm saying. ?

2

Thank you HeadNo2 for enlightening us on the Drama-verse mythology. We have been faithfully worshipping the Great Aggregator every Sunday and engaging in spirited discussion to question the purpose and effect of her actions. If the power of clicks have no consequence on her way of being, would she care to answer my prayers?

I think she has this week. Seven Day Queen will perhaps no longer face the threat of a sudden death and will be able to live out the course of its natural life. I thank thee.

I hope this high rating can at least influence Age of Youth later, I don't ask much, 4%-5% is good enough for me.

My Sassy Girl turned out to be the highest rating for weekdays' drama. It's not the best, but I enjoyed it. School 2017, I expected the low rating and I don't think KBS expected it to get high rating as well. I hope it can at least stays at the current number.

@outofthisworld
Agreed. The silliness of the earlier episodes were completely written off and it everyone just had gril faces most of the time.
I really enjoyed the princess' out of the palace adventures and Gyun Woo trying to stay as far away from her as possible, but failing to do so.

2

And everyone just had grim*

1

There was a lot of angst after Guyn woo found out that...
Wait...I think this is considered as spoiler lol. Do you mind if I say it?

Anyways, just to be safe, I'll say this: So Gyun woo finds something about the past and sort of blames it on himself. He then avoids the princess and tries to leave to another place. A lot of noble idiocy going on at this point.
The ending was pretty anti climatic...everything was boiling well in the pot until the flames died and well, it lacked that oomph that could have made it more stronger plot wise.
I did enjoy it overall, but it's one of those shows that I could forget and move on.

" but i surely am enjoying those salty tears"
is what makes the dislikes,

and a commenter said yesterday that why would this kind of criticism didn't happen when "this and that happened" so at least when people see the drama in the future and thought why nothing happens, they'll find people who spoke up.

It's a no brainer that choi min soo drama or some drama will keep getting high when another culture gets represent badly because the main audience is not even thinking about it which makes in line with what people complaint makes sense, so no one actually cares about others and keep viewing other as what they see in popular tv, hmm?

I was off in my prediction for The King Loves and MWDTL. I had expected more love for Yoona and Im Shi Wan and less for the Ahjussi.

Both School and TKL had significant drop on Tues but it could be due to My Sassy Girl's finale. Shall see how they fare this coming week although I think Falsify is probably an even stronger competitor.

More perplexing is the relatively unchanged status of Wed-Thurs dramas. SDQ is still at the bottom even though they did get a rise in absolute numbers. I was sure MWDTL would dive after episode 1 but it didn't and actually rose at that! I'm not talking about the offensive content(because I'm not sure if it was an issue with the domestic audience), I just didn't think such a flippant, crazy show would actually get decent ratings.

Since FOS fell below 5% again, I think I don't need to make sense of ratings anyway.

I thought TKL would get at least 10% for premiere week, @kiara was right, sageuk with idols as the main casts won't be able to get high rating
(I hope I remember it correct the meaning of what she wrote).

I was right about Ahjusshi, and with all the controvercies, the rating probably would be higher next week, who knows. I don't think MBC will cancel it.

I believe FOS will get more than 5% again for epi 14, especially with the ending of epi 13.

About Ahjussi, do you think the rating will go higher because of the controversy? I think it will increase if the drama focuses more on family relationships and issues because those will always attract a core audience.

I think yes. Controversy sometimes can be some sort of promotion. But I don't think it will be hit. Maybe around 10%-11%. The competitors also seem not to be the strong ones.

"I think it will increase if the drama focuses more on family relationships and issues because those will always attract a core audience."

Yes agree. I think that's the main plot of this drama. Although I don't know what happened after epi 1 as I stopped watching it.

The most annoying point is no one talked about two daughter female characters and their husbands. It was made for domestic audience and they liked it. I want Father-ahjumma daughters conflicts.
I we have atmost 1 more episode of oil-nation and that will be the final one. All the makjang action will take place here in korea.
The frivolous nature of him will mirror his son-in-laws or not that needs to be seen.

This drama itself made most of international viewers run away from them because of the controversy, now there will be less ppl who bother with the entire drama and the original plot. For a father - daughter conflicts, or in general family conflicts
or makjang plot, I have many weekend drama that can make up for it. It won't be a great loss for me.

3

It's impossible for any discussion on the story at the moment.

1

@sera Most audience doesn't come from a specific community. Though The drama is too over the top.
Stranger - episode 13 was predictable.

@outofthisworld discussion is being taken hostage and that place is brewing with hostility. Reminds me of those election months of USA election.

I know a lot of people love him for his bread drama but I thought he did a fantastic job in Mirror of a Witch. I hope in his next project he takes on a different type of character and the drama does well! He really deserves a lot more recognition and I want people to see him more than just "Kim Tak Goo".

I'm not saying it's the only factor, but a lot of viewers were unhappy about the casting of Lee Yeonhee and Ahn Jaehyun, especially as they make up 2 of the 3 main cast. Many comments before it aired were saying stuff like, "Sorry, Jingoo, but I'll have to pass up on this," or, "I have a feeling this drama will fail."

Thankfully, RW actually did so much better than I expected in terms of ratings and feedback... The talk page on naver is really active and it actually is on top of most searched drama for Wed-Thurs and is in the Top 10 until now.

The only star in this drama is Nam Goong Min though.. There are two stars in TKL.. Rather than huge star power, I would say Falsify has a line up of solid casts compared to the other two drama, and SBS legal drama tend to well in rating.

Yoo Jun-sang is another multi talented stage actor.
I think he is more popular with the older crowd which is probably a good thing because they are the majority of the legal drama viewers.

He headlined the successful weekend drama "My Husband Got a Family" with Kim Nam-joo in 2012. The ratings was .8 away from 50%.

Despite being iffy with this writer, I think the cast is solid enough to carry the show.
I'd be very surprise if it fail to lead the Mon/Tues slot.

I don't really care about Seo Hyun's role here, her character is just a normal kind of heroine who is working as a police officer, so expect some action scenes from her and she is a heroine with some sad story. I think her acting is just OK because it is kinda bright and lively character, so her bland expression is not too obvious like in Moon Lovers, although I still doubt why she wants to be an actress when she can be a successful solo singer(aside from being an idol) .. Ji Hyun Woo & Kim Ji Hoon are fantastic like always, and their storyline is more interesting than anything else. Im Joo Eun too.

This is an honest question: which drama exactly in the past year has done better than BOWG in that time slot for tvN? I'm genuinely unsure because as far as I remember, mon-tue for tvN has always been around the 3%-4% mark except for a few dramas in the distant-ish past like OHYA and cheese. So in that regard, I think BOWG is doing very well considering the previous 3 dramas in that slot.

I realised that I remember that the best hit has a controversy,
the actress that acted as "fairy" get a quarrel in his son's school and the viewer demanding her to be off air, that maybe the reason why the rating isn't increasing.

"there has been reports saying her son, who's in the third grade, was bullying one of his classmates. Her agency is saying that some of the reporting is being exaggerated and that the bats were just styrofoam(?) and that made people even more mad because it sounds like she's just brushing it off by saying it's just child's play.

Wow, so many shows I didn't even realize existed. Forest of Secrets is the only Korean series I've been watching steadily (and I would definitely recommend it).

I tried watching School 2017 for something a little lighter. The actors seemed likable, but I didn't care for the characters or plot. I'm not a big fan of the idiot-fights-ridiculously-cruel-system genre. I expect there is some legitimate social commentary about the South Korean school system beyond the hyperbole, but I always wind up wanting the girl (or guy) to be less mediocre. Maybe I'm too old for this genre.

Also, I just watched the first few episodes of Fight My Way, which is surprisingly adorable. I suppose I am contradicting myself by liking a show about underachievers, but the characters are worth rooting for and their friendship is endearing (so far).

Any suggestions regarding other shows? Is Woman of Dignity good?

If you like Desperate Housewives you would like Woman of Dignity too, it gives similar vibes

Bride of the Water God is a mess. TvN did such an incredible job with 'Goblin' I really looked forward to this show but it's a bit of a stinker. I keep feeling the shrill and whiny vibe. Thank God for 'Forest of Secrets' . It's now the only current show I watch.

Speaking of viewership, I've been hoping DB will address the subject of Beanie viewership re news of Big Three subbed dramas suddenly becoming unavailable in North America except via this kocowa thing. What's the story? I'd like to think kocowa has consulted an international site as important as DB but maybe not?

Kocowa is basically the end for DramaFever, Viki and On Demand Korea as far as K-dramas go.

I'm not impressed with the service Video is too laggy. We have to wait for awhile before the smart tv and console app comes out. Add to that it's $2 more a month and $20 more annually, I probably won't be subscribing. Big disappointment, I'll have to watch illegally or not at all.

I wonder if the translations will be more along the lines of DramaFever, i.e no flavor or Viki with all the colloquialisms.

WHOOOOH! Seven-day Queen is getting a boost at last! YAY!!! It's the only one I'm currently invested full-time (though I watched several premieres but I'm not digging them much). As for My Sassy Girl, the ending was such meh. I still enjoyed it, but not likely to take it seriously. Someone pointed out that the story seems to have gone downhill the moment Prince Dalhan left and it's true, the post-Dalhan storyline was just lacklustre—he should probably have his own spin-off. Lols. :)

Please please continue the recapped for the drama of woman of dignity! I barely enjoy the k-drama nowadays, but this show is exceptional.

I have to check this every week to see if 7dq is getting the ratings it deserve.at least now they were able to hit at least 6%.i hope the ratings will go up in the last episodes.honestly i havent even started on the new ones aside from school 2017 which is good but once again failing the ratings.what is wrong with koreans?seriously why are the good ones not getting good ratings.im stupefied especially with the "ruler" ratings. Theres just so many loopholes in directing and script writing but it got the highest rating.my gosh.
