Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 24-30, 2017

New kid on the block Falsify took over the top spot so fast that none of the other shows even had time to blink, topping out at a pretty darn good 12.6% with only its second (half) episode. It maintained first through Tuesday, with The King Loves maintaining a strong second, while School 2017 continues to dwell in the dark place that shows below 5.0% go.

Over in the middle of the week, Seven Day Queen at least saw a small uptick in ratings and even got up to 7.7% as it nears its end, but it was overshadowed by Man Who Dies to Live, which maintained first place even in its second week (though with ever so slightly lower numbers). Reunited Worlds continues to do well for itself and may prove to be a strong contender to Man Who Dies in the coming weeks. But surprisingly enough (though not really with the show’s top cast), new tvN show Criminal Minds premiered to a very strong 4.2%, but lost some of that viewership as it dropped to 3.5% for its second episode.

As for the weekend, there’s a void left now that The Best Hit and Duel are over, which Woman of Dignity is all too happy to fill with the high numbers it’s been pulling in lately. It may even break 10% at this rate.

But this week also marked the end for Forest of Secrets (*cries forever*), and as of this writing, its penultimate episode pulled in 5.0%. Farewell forever, you most amazing of amazing of amazing shows, you.

I'm a bit surprised that Bride of the Water God is doing so bad.

It's not near to hit, but it's not bad. This is cable channel and the airing time is also quite late than the others.

With a cast like that, I'm not surprised. It's the most aesthetically pleasing cinematography in a drama, but that itself can't cover its faults. It's a first for me being disappointed in drama, with a favourite writer and director. However I'm holding on because of Im Joo Hwan's character backstory, which is more exciting than whether Ha Baek finds them stones :S

I don't know there's something about the drama, that makes we feel so disengaged as a viewer. I've never read the Manwha, but it seemed so interesting when dramabeans first mentioned it. Aside from that I'm thoroughly enjoying "Reunited Worlds", and might pick up FOS since everyone is praising it :)

I find myself on the opposite end here. The show has some issues to be sure, but I find myself looking forward to it each and every week. Maybe it could be because it's a M/T drama, I find both So-ah and Hu-ye compelling characters, or the way the romance is building between the main lead couple to be interesting. Like you, I could care less about the gods and their affairs outside of what Hu-ye brings to the table.

I get by with Reunited Worlds. I also need to watch Forest of Secrets.

I'll never forgive this show for making me dislike NJH. I have pretty much found him adorable in all the shows before but BOTWG made me think that he is a terrible, terrible actor with a blindingly beautiful face.

Having only seen this drama (did not read the Manwha) it seems to me that the character that NJH is playing is supposed to be somewhat cold and awkward, stiff and out of place. Therefore, he would be playing the character perfectly. It is definitely not a failure on NJH's part as an actor that this character is awkward. The character is a king after all, and used to royal treatment. Earth, with no acknowledgment of his royalty would be very difficult indeed. In my opinion, NJH is successful in his role as Habaek. The one "terrible" thing about this drama is that they never should have compared it to Goblin as those two are completely different and it raised the expectations for this drama to a level that could not be obtained... due to the differences between the two. But for what this drama is.... NJH's acting is what it should be to suit the personality and circumstances of the character.

Hmm ..I don't believe that @bips99 was comparing Bride to Goblin. In fact, I would blame PD-nim for directing NJH the way he has and blame Ms. Writer-nim for reducing the emperor-to-be of the 3 realms to what seems to be a kept man(god) with savant-like qualities. 8 episodes in, he's still power-blocked, mostly, with no credible explanation why. And he's mooching off the ladies.

1

@zzthorn , i'm sorry but i'll disagree with you here. i agree the character is supposed to be cold, awkward and out of place - but playing a cold character is not equal to being a wooden actor. Which is sadly what a young actors think - that just bec a character is cold, they don't need to do anything and just stand there and look pretty.

in fact its the other way around. You need to be a terrific actor to pull off a character that is cold/ unfeeling. You need to put in tiny tiny expressions and ticks to convey what the writing is saying. You need to make your audience feel a lot without actually having the luxury of expressing a lot.

like @adachiyutos says below, this show has completely exposed him as an actor. I always used to think he was a decent actor but this show......... ........ ..... i don't even know where exactly to begin to point out all his weaknesses

And i'm not at any level comparing it to goblin. the tone, the story, the direction , the mythology - everything is different. And Gong Yoo has like 10 years of experience on NJH. So i'm not even making the comparison even at a subconscious level.

I tried watching Criminal Minds but I felt underwhelmed by the directing. I'm still hoping it picks my interest in the coming episode.

Forest of Secrets totally put a high bar on crime-thriller dramas for me. The acting, the writing, directing even to the OSTs, perfect!

When I was watching Forest of Secrets ep 15, I was literally breathless because I had been unconsciously holding my breath.

I kept thinking:
"This is how you do tension!" "This is how you suck in the audience without manipulation!" "This acting is daebak!" "This is how you direct" "This is how you do dramas!!!!!!"

We are now spoiled...maybe too spoiled to enjoy anything less.

Yes!!! This! Everything was amazing... writing, acting, directing, editing, music, everything!

I also like it because I never felt cheated while watching it. A lot of crime/mystery shows throw in red herrings on purpose just to trick you, but this show was so opaque and tense that it made me doubt everyone so everyone became a herring to me whether it was intended to or not. I never felt manipulated or tricked into thinking something, rather I was right next to the characters on this ride, trying to figure out this huge mystery with them. Everything seemed logical at the time, until new evidence came to light. Everything was important to the story, there were no unnecessary fillers. Everything felt real and fleshed out.

Truly a great drama. Forever the standard for crime/mystery dramas, imo.

*chants* season 2! season 2! season 2! :)

This drama should at least win at Baeksang as the Best Drama and Best Screenplay. I know it will be hard to get Daesang since this is not a hit and in the recent years, Daesang has been given to the highest rated drama. But just like Signal and Dear My Friends which both won the same categories, I am wishing this drama to get the same recognition too.

I agree that FIS is really excellent, but to have fare comparison I was not so in love in the first two episodes... So in a fair comparison if I compare the show first two episodes together, CM is not terribly worst than FOS. In addition they have different genre, FOS is more about law/politic/corruption while CM is mainly about homicide criminals with different story every week. As much as I like FOS I think the way people are comparing both show is not fair at all...

4
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's why I'n trying not to compare as well. I have put Forest of Secrets at special place as 16 hours movie instead of normal drama because of its quality.

As regard to the comparison between FOS & CM, the genre for both drama are still crime- thriller, but CM is more on action/procedural. In my opinion, the comparison in certain aspects can be done, but not for the total comparison.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It does certainly look like people are making comparisons between FOS and CM here and there but I don't think we go out and intentionally compare. It's just that CM is currently the closest in genre to FOS so it is inevitable.

I didn't go into CM to see how it will match up against FOS. Neither did I compare it to the original since I didn't watch that. My approach to any drama is to watch with as little preconceived notions, expectations etc. I also try not to think too hard, I like to go with the feel. With that mindset, I found it boring. And I say that without any comparison.

To be fair, not all dramas start out with a bang. I am fine with it. But as I said, since I go with feelings, I need at least a hook. There are dramas which don't grab me at the beginning but I have reasons for staying on for another couple of eps or weeks. I am not watching CM for Lee Jun Ki, I was more interested in SHJ. But he is not reason enough and I hardly watch a drama for just the actor. Still, I might watch as much as I have time to spare.

Now I know what to do when I run out of superlatives to describe Forest of Secrets - I just repeat them!

Yaaaayyyy!!! For SDQ attaining their highest ratings so far, hoping that the finale week will end with a bang. 10% would be very nice!

I am surprised that MWDTL maintained its ratings. I must have seen wrongly that it took a dip on Thurs. I had thought it has got to do with another contentious issue. Guess, I am mistaken.

It's too early to say if CM's ratings will stay low. So far, the writing, directing and editing aren't giving vibes of a good production. As far as ratings go, tvN isn't having a good year. BOTWG and CM(if it doesn't increase) have under performed given the hype. But I am eternally grateful to them and will kiss their feet for giving me Forest of Secrets - the most AMAZING of AMAZING of AMAZING shows!

I really want to get behind School 2017 because it's my first school k-drama and I find Kim Jung-hyun both compelling and sexy. However, I find myself having the most difficulty to watch and keep up with this show. Women of Dignity not only gets high ratings on its actual broadcast, they are getting around 2-3% on afternoon repeats. They're also consistent in being the most searched drama on Daum and Naver after its broadcast. it stars top actresses, and it is written and directed by the star screenwriter/director of JTBC. So, I'm kinda wondering why there's a little fuss about this among international fans. Hey, you're missing an absolute gem!

Anyways, I'm stuck with JTBC Dramas these days. Wish, Age of Youth 2 will get the success of its predecessors :)

I think the storyline might not really capturing international fans' interest. Some ppl's perception is makjang is a bad thing, but if it is well written , it will be a good drama. This writer wary me at first because of SWDBS, but she is doing well with WOD so far. One thing I should credit her with is her consistency to write female centric drama from Beloved Eun Dong to WOD, although SWDBS is quite a disapppointment.

re: the lack of fuss. Neither DF nor Viki picked this up. A lot of interest comes from their promos of upcoming dramas or with Viki on Soompi. Viki did pick up Ms. Perfect which I watched and enjoyed, but it wasn't a hugely popular drama so maybe it wasn't worth the $$ to pick up this one. Even here Ms. Perfect had a loyal but very small following but I can see how this drama seems a bit too similar in some regards.

I actually did not get very good buzz on this one at the beginning so I kinda take it this one got better as it goes on?

Women of Dignity is starting to get good buzz here, I like the cast, and I do enjoy the occasional makjang, so I might go to the bother of tracking it down. But it is going to have to be spectacular if it wants to outweigh the annoyance of trying to watch it on a third party site.

I'm so sad to see Forest of Secrets go, I love love love this drama and it's characters so much , all the episodes had my full attention and always having me trying to figure out things . I would be ecstatic for a season two.
I'm not really feeling Criminal Minds much , though it could be that I'm tired of seeing serial killers murdering women more than something wrong with the show itself.

I'm really into Falsify though from the first episode onwards , it's good. It took a while but I'm also enjoying Reunited Worlds .
I want to know how the story continues in Bride of the Water God, although it hasn't engaged me that much , it's not all that exciting and none of the characters have me rooting for them.

So far I don't like The King Loves and I think I'm gonna give it a pass.
