Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 3-9, 2017

We’re getting closer to the end of this current cycle, which means fluctuating numbers up until we get to each show’s respective finale. Fight My Way reached a series high this week at 13.0%, and for that matter, Lookout also saw its highest numbers yet at 9.7%. That means that My Sassy Girl has dropped back into the single digits, but just barely—there’s still time left in its run (it’ll outlast its current competitors) for it to see higher numbers, but then it’ll have new competition to deal with.

It’s not news that Seven Day Queen continues to struggle in the land of the forgotten numbers, while Ruler—Master of the Mask saw a series high just short of 15.0%. For that matter, even Suspicious Partner also got to a series high of 9.4.
(This week is just full of series highs, isn’t it?)

As for the weekend, Woman of Dignity continued to more or less maintain its audience, while KBS’s The Best Hit always sees lower numbers on Friday than it does on Saturday. It’s not a runaway hit, but it’s loved among the people who watch it, and that’s what really matters, right? Not to advertisers anyway, but it matters in our hearts.

Bride of Water God had 3+ % ratings, which were more than Circle ones :)
And Woman of Dignity saw a 5.8 rating on Saturday, which means that the makjang is attracting more viewers. It also means it can become a hit bigger than SWDBS if it goes on like that, since it has 20 episodes.

I can't believe Lookout is ending. I have mixed feelings about SP ending, since I believe it could have been a couple of episodes shorter.
I have no opinion about Ruler and FMW since I don't watch them.

Maybe now that these are ending, there is a chance for the other dramas to have glorious ratings finales.
After all, 2 weeks later, MSG ends on SBS, so maybe it can break 12%.
7DQ ends on KBS, and it can get higher ratings for the finale.
TBH ends on KBS too, but I doubt WOD will let them breathe even then :(

Anyway, thank you to the current dramas, cause the only ones that sound remotely interesting in the future for me are : Worlds Reunited and falsify

If bride of water god has 3+ ratings then why is it not on the list? I loved the premiere of the show. I was quite surprised not to find it in the list here.
If it really has 3 percent ratings then I wouldn't have to worry about it being preemted and things like that. Phew!

Congrats to Lookout for rising! Sadly, I am behind this show. I can't pinpoint the reason. Has watching Forest of Secrets make me less tolerant of plot holes for this genre? I started this show for Suji but Do Han is dominating the show. It's not the reason why I have stop because Kim Young Kwang is killing it. It's just that other characters seem boring compared to him.

I can't wait for the new dramas to fill my Wed-Thurs slot. I will miss making ridiculous gifs for Ruler but I will have Choi Min Soo instead so it's more than good. I am even more excited to have Yeo Jin Goo back on my screen! Thank goodness I don't have to wait too long after Circle ended.

I am not going to complain about Forest of Secrets' ratings. If Ruler's ratings can go up, anything is possible!

Lookout started very promising, but probably after epi 10 it started became a bit too predictable. I admit not liking KYK is one of the reasons that I started to turn off when Do Han started to dominate , not to mention my fav like Kim Tae Hoon is underused, but overall it is from an addicting show to just a show I want to see how it ends, and it's no longer thrilling. But I'm glad it is doing well, there's no better feeling to see a good show receives the rating it deserves and hopefully it is an encouragement to MBC to keep producing good drama.

I can't wait to see Choi Min Soo ahjusshi dominating screen together with Yeo Jin Gu in the different drama but in the same timeslot lol. Jackpot, anyone? ?

I am not that care about his or any actor's real life but sometimes there are some actors that I don't want to see them in my screen, and I think some of us also are like that. It is just about preference & taste. I was OK in the first half because I can skip his parts and read recap for more understanding but now with him dominating and more interaction with female lead, I just stopped watching and reading the recap only.

I am not sure why KYK's comment have such a long lasting impact on his career. If anything, he was just stupid to speak his mind.

I am putting my neck out for confessing to these ugly thoughts that run through my mind once in a while for example: "Gosh! What's that lady wearing? Her belly is spilling over the top of her pants!" I know better than to say that out loud but I'm just as guilty of having such a thought in the first place.

Perhaps, he was also guilty of being arrogant enough to make open such opinions in an interview. Whatever it was, I find it rather sad that he is still getting backlash from that.

I don't like to read too much into an actor's character and am very cynical of anything that's published. I don't want to put them on a pedestal and don't care if they aren't the nicest people either.

@laplume @outofthisworld
Hi. Why LOL?

Btw, I didn't persuade others to hate him or making his comment a big deal to have an impact in Kbiz, I think I make myself clear when I said "I know it doesn't prove anything", but..
and I say sorryyy (it sounds in my heart that said I can't help it.)

For human being making fault, I know we always have to cut some slack, Im just simply put my tots & never say forbid him widely in TV or he is making bad example for others.
So its PERSONAL and even myself don't know the reason why, it just since that thing, I still can't watch him thats all.

to put my thought on why I can't start Lookout is it that wrong??

0

Despite its flaws, I think Lookout did remarkably well. Kim Tae Hoon is not playing a likable character, he's frustrating to watch. I find KIm Young Kwang's Do Han a lot more interesting. It started out as the underdog so it's to the drama and cast's credit that ratings have been climbing.

3
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's my frustration about Kim Tae Hoon, just like my frustration on some actors like Im Joo Hwan & Kim Ji Hoon who I know can do great in everything but so often underutilized. I don't mind lead role or not, likeable or not, but as long as I'm satisfied watching them on screen I'll be happy.

Lookout as underdog drama is doing good, I believe their finale week will be able to reach double digit. Now I want more drama from script contest winners.

3
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

You mean Lookout's script won a contest? Interestingly, so did My Sassy Girl. However, I am not liking that very much. It's nothing bad but nothing great as well.

0

Lookout won second place behind Radiant Office ?
I think Lookout has a good directing as well, who managed to make this drama looks better in implementation. This director previously directed Two Weeks and Shine or Go Crazy.

Oh, I didn't know MSG's script was also won a contest. ?

3

The director for Lookout was originally supposed to direct Ruler. I feel like it would have been a completely different drama under him.

I quite like Lookout. Its fast paced for the most and Kim Seul Gi & Key are quite adorable!

3

@seralovestteobokki I am not sure if I recall it correctly. It's just one of those things I've read at that time when there was the huge fiasco over the auditions for the sassy princess.

The story isn't complex and I'll give it a pass for a rookie writer. At least he/she didn't mess it up big time like the writer(s) of Ruler.

@Solo If Lookout and Ruler has to exchange PD, I'd say a big NO! Ruler's PD is as atrocious as the writer. I don't want this guy to mess up any decent story. He's got a very dated approach to directing and the acting he coaxes out of the cast is old fashion as well.

2

@outofthisworld I meant if the PD for Lookout directed Ruler then Ruler would be a very different show. I never want the PD for Ruler to ever direct a show with one of my biases ever again. He is just so stiff. And I really hate how he never lets KSH do anything but obsesses over her 'patting' abilities in a kiss scenes which he didn't even end up using.

0

@Solo Thanks for your explanation.

I agree that PD is so stiff. I don't get what you mean by KSH's patting abilities, it sure sounds funny ?

1

I'm glad I didn't know anything about KYK when I started Lookout and was/am able to appreciate him as the great actor that he has become today!
Definitely anyone who cannot stand KYK or Dohan would not enjoy Lookout as yes, he is the male lead and driving the story.
But I totally understand not being able to watch certain actors or their characters. I could not finish watching Cinderella and the Four Knights because I just couldn't stand Jung Il Woo and his character. I watched him in other dramas and he was fine, but just couldn't watch him in Cinderella.
KYK is doing such an incredible job in Lookout, he really is a great actor and I hope that as he has become a better actor he also has become a better person. Maybe that's why he is owning Dohan, he is a complex mix of good and bad?

We'll probably have to wait till after Ruler finishes. I think fans of the drama can't wait for the Crown Prince to finally take back his throne and Ga Eun to stand prettily beside him. Thank goodness it's ending! There's no hype for Man Who Dies to Live and Reunited World. Am I right to say the promotion for both dramas are very dismal? Did MBC and SBS burnt their budgets promoting Ruler and Suspicious Partner?

3

Agreed re: dismal hype for Man Who Dies to Live and Reunited Worlds. With Ruler and SP wrapping up, MBC and SBS are focused on hyping up The King Loves and Falsify, respectively.

Falsify might just put SBS back on the 20% bracket so I'm not surprised. Namgoong Min has earned a lot of good will with his recent projects. But I think Reunited Worlds might top out for Wed-Thurs dramas.

I don't think SBS hyped Falsify that much yet, I don't see ppl that excited with this drama like with Defendant & Whisper - based on what I saw. But The King Loves is hyped, just like Ruler.

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

I haven't been actively following the promos for Falsify so Idk. Perhaps SBS blew their budget on Namgoong Min and Eom Ji-won?

0

That one I'm not sure. I also think Reunited World is less hype maybe because the script reading & fiming are started a little too late since YJG just finished Circle?

As far as I recall, MBC is always less promoting their drama, this year sageuk like Ruler & The King Loves are really hyped.. Maybe these two drama have more budgets for promotion due to popular names.

2

Yeah, I don't think SBS has hyped Falsify much yet, but I don't remember much hype for Defendant either and just a little more for Whisper cause they used certain things to hype that show. Corruption seems to do well in the Mon/Tue slot so less hype might continue to be a good thing.

1

Ruler definitely doesn't have more budget, I remember the PD complaining about it at the presscon but Kings Love has investment from Tencent and has already been sold to multiple countries. Plus Yoona is really big in China so maybe there's that hype as well.

2

I don't think PMY's plastic surgery is a big issue & has any relation with rating, she even admitted to it.

0

Really? I saw a few comments about it on Naver so was wondering if people were still making an issue of it.

I've always been curious why PMY was less liked in Korea than internationally.

0

I think she has her own fanbase in Korea, although I agree she is way more popular internationally. Maybe even she has many popular drama, but her character is not that popular. Therefore, her name alone is not popular enough to bring the hype?

I don't read comments about her in Naver, but it is so often actressess been pointed out for PS, than the actors. It is not only Koreans' problems, but also international fans'. Double standard imo.

2

Timing may be one reason, but i think portrayal of character is another reason.I mean why would I watch a historical drama which just changed a tyrant king(probably d worst king)into brat, spoiled king.If I was Korean I wouldn't like that kind of change.Creativity is good, but u also have to follow main fact. After Rebel, its seem silly and stupid to see d same king but very different portrayal in SDK.He was tyrant,he raped nd killed lots of women and what we got in SDK? He seems stupid brat, spoiled from childhood due to lack of care and abandonment issue which isn't d case. Its a very risky writing. So far I watched,King got d most screen time, and writers made other important characters including male lead and female into supporting characters who is there only for romantic reasons. This drama is focused on real historical people, not on fictional character,If it was like princess man,It would be awesome drama. This drama so intriguing, has beautiful cinematography, great ost, great actors and they acted so good.I wished they didnt romanticize the king so much.Such a good project went to vein.

Ugh, I have such mixed feelings about the great ratings for Women of Dignity. Initially I wanted the show to do well to prove that a woman-centric show with actresses of a certain age could be a ratings hit. However, I'm so disappointed in the show. It's soooo makjang. I don't know what happened to the satire or whatever I was promised. I know makjang sells, but it's depressing to see it confirmed and on a cable channel which used to be a refuge from that kind of silliness. Sighs.

My current favorite show is Forest of Secrets, and I honestly think the ratings are great. I've learned not to be greedy since so many good shows get terrible ratings. FOS has tvN's best ratings this year (I think) and it's not a flashy show. It's not something I could see being a runaway ratings smash, but if tvN were to continue to make shows of this level of quality and get these ratings then I think both viewers and the network would be happy.

Sometimes I don't get it how the ratings are so different for a drama that has two episodes back to back in one slot. The ratings are usually much higher for the second episode. Do people just decide to tune in late and watch only the second episode?

1
1

Required fields are marked *

I was curious about that too, but I read that they combine the ratings for both parts and the average that results is the actual rating and sometimes one drama's ratings become lower than its competitor even if their second part was higher. They should have just let the episodes as they were. This only confuses the audience.

As I've just recently bing-watched FoS, I would recommend FoS. As much as I love FMY, I have a feeling that the show drags in parts. That's not the thing I saw in FoS though.. so at the current state, my 2017 kdrama award goes to FoS. The male lead is love.

FMY is love. FoS is flawless.

I really wish duel was as popular as some of the other ocn dramas this year (see voice/tunnel) because duel is just as deserving sure its kind of slow but yang se jong is killing it in his role(s) although i may be biased but the story itself is also rather intriguing but i think its not for everyone similar to circle ( a very niche genre)

I still have high hopes though and i really wish that the ship that didnt sail in RDTK will sail here!!

Seven Day Queen is such a a good drama. Sighhhh. I know when a drama is good, it is good. But you can't help feeling down that its not doing well ratings wise.

I have the same feeling for a different drama though. I wish Forest of Secrets got so much higher ratings. I haven't watched SDQ so I don't think I can comment anything here but I think more people should watch Forest of Secrets, it's way too good to be ignored. I love this one much more than Signal.

I always feel grateful for this community to have a lot of great Beanies who can recommend great great dramas. I was suggested by one Beanie to watch Forest of Secrets and now the show becomes one my my most favorite dramas of the year (will be upgraded to of all time if it maintains its quality until the very end). I'm greedy though, I would hope the ratings for FoS should reach something like 15%.

This is another drama which I don't have to pray that actors and actresses will deliver because they just deliver. Everything is exceptional and flawless that I wish there will be more seasons for this one show. I don't mind watching Forest of Secrets 2, 3, 4, 5 if the quality as well as the leads are kept. *finger hearts*

Absolutley staggering RMOTM should get such high numbers! Although I have enjoyed some of it, the writing is so poor the viewing figures should be in the negative values to reflect its quality. Visually attractive, with good costumes and a great cast, who kept up their hard work to the very end, all but a handful of the episodes had no plot, no character development and boaring stereotypes for most of the characters. The 'heroine' main lead's part was simply dreadful. I got sick and tired of seeing her cry. She was as much use to the Crown Prince (who was himself pretty much of a wuss) as a slap-in-the-face from a wet fish!
