KBS confirms Season 2 of Mystery Queen

The drama gods have answered our prayers, rejoice! KBS has confirmed that they have greenlighted a second season of detective comedy Mystery Queen, which is due to come on the airwaves next February. It’s actually a lot shorter of a wait than I was expecting, especially since it will have been less than a year from when the first season aired, which ran from this April through May.

Choi Kang-hee and Kwon Sang-woo, who played our titular amateur-sleuth ajumma and her ever-grumpy detective partner, are still in the “positively considering” stage, but it’s hard to think that they’ll turn down their offers to return. What would Mystery Queen be without its two leads and their adorable bickering? (Spin-offs Mrs. Cop 2 and Bad Guys 2 did both return with new casts, but let’s not think about that.) The two actors also expressed their desire to return to the screen as characters Seol-ok and Wan-seung in their post-show interviews, so here’s to hoping they confirm soon!

I’m also waiting to hear that our puppy rookie detective Joon-oh (Lee Won-geun), the heroine’s friend (Kim Hyun-sook), and her beau (Ahn Gil-kang) will be returning to reprise their roles. I grew quite attached to the ragtag Scooby gang that gradually came together throughout the show, and I want all the members back, solving crimes and going up against the baddies. There were a lot of adorable relationships that formed among them, which were largely platonic — for better or worse, depending on who you ask — and I can’t wait to see that developed more fully in the new season.

Speaking of, while I do admit the way Mystery Queen ended wasn’t ideal, especially the way the producers went about it (announcing their hopes for a second season after their cliffhanger finale aired), I think the last episode of the first season laid a lot of very promising groundwork for the new one to cover. In general, the show’s format and content lends itself well to multiple seasons with its procedural elements, but in addition, we’ll get to dig deeper into the main mystery connecting our two leads. We never got the answer to what Wan-seung’s first love had to do with Seol-ok’s parents’ suicide/murder, and the suspects they caught in the first season were more peripheral to the crimes.

However, the mystery in Mystery Queen aside, I’m most excited to see where our main characters will go from where we last saw them. Will Seol-ok pass her exam and become a rookie detective? Oh man, I’m already giggling at the thought of her possibly becoming Wan-seung and Joon-oh’s hoobae, since I know her attitude and behavior will likely be vastly different depending on which sunbae she’s talking to, which should make for some hilarious pettiness. I also wonder what will happen to her marriage now that she’s on her own, which is an arc that I hope will wrap up early on, so Seol-ok can be free to enter into a relationship with someone who is deserving of her. Hmm, will it be the puppy, or Grumpy McGrumperson?

Script work for Mystery Queen 2 is still ongoing, which is the primary reason Choi Kang-hee and Kwon Sang-woo’s agencies are citing for holding off on confirming their returns. We’ll likely hear more in the next couple of months as production gears up for the February 2018 airdate. For now, I’m just going to preemptively throw some confetti that we’re going to get some closure to Seol-ok and Wan-seung’s story, yay!

Let's hope it turns into a long lasting series, along the lines of similar hits from the UK and US.

The only thing that could be better: a season where they merge the characters and story lines of this show and Neighborhood Lawyer JDH.

although i lourrved the scooby-gang and their bickering, i hope for resolved endings rather than non-confirmed multiple seasons!

Well, I guess now I can watch the last two episodes. I rebelled when I found out that the ending left a lot to be desired.

The ending wasn't bad at all. It answered all the key questions, but left the characters still working out a part of the mystery which didn't hold a lot of emotional attachment (at least it didn't for me).

The ending let you imagine the characters happily continuing on with their lives long after the cameras stopped rolling.

YES! The bickering duo is back! I hope the script will be good ? and we get all the actors and actresses for season 2 back. The crew probably pushed for a season 2 so much then... since it's quite rare for a drama to get another season...

So excited! I was not happy with how the series ended but if they are doing a 2nd season and with all the same cast then I am perfectly happy with it!

Hopefully all the questions the last episode opened up will get answered. I also really hope the full cast will sign on because the drama just wont be the same without them (especially our grumpy detective and spunky ahjumma).

I actually hope they wrap up the whole thing about his first love early on. I have to admit I was kind of tired of it, but I'm definitely in on a second season. I didn't love the end, but it didn't bother me so much.

This made my day! Fantastic news!

So looking forward to having questions answered and embarking on solving more mysteries with Wan-seung, Seol-ok, and all the others. ..... I do seriously hope that all the original cast members return for this. All of them! It just wouldn't be the same otherwise.

Wow! Can't believe they are actually following through with doing a season 2. And that's good considering how the first one ended - but only if they bring back all the main actors. I would definitely watch if they wrapped up all the loose ends they left open from season 1.

I said this in the final episode comments, but...
(flame suit on)
...All they really need is Choi Kang-hee as Seol-ok. It's fine if she gets to carry on with Grumpy and Puppy, but it's also fine if she has to break in a whole new generation of know-it-all detectives (with maybe a cameo of Grumpy saying "Told you so").

Wowow, great news! Seriously thought second season is impossible, but am pleasantly surprised. Would like to think people behind the show already has an inkling, hence the ending. (Still clinging on the hope for a similar route for Lookout.)
Here's hoping the script will be way tighter, coz it was kinda hole-y before. Also adding my prayer for everybody reprising their roles, and more appearance of Inspector Woo!

Wow, this is really happening!! I'm only cautiously ecstatic. They need to get the whole crew together and the writing quality needs to be sustained. I hope things will resolve by the end of season 2 and there won't be an attempt to get a season 3. The production is lucky that they gambled on a season 2 and won. I hope this won't lead to a bunch of shows ending on the hopes of getting a second season.

Oh! I'm so happy to hear this! I've been wishing there were more episodes to be had. Now I can rest easy knowing they're on the way.

I really hope that with the majority of the emotional stuff out of the way, that now the show can focus on the new BFFs solving crimes with snappy dialog. Hopefully there will be no romance between the leads - I just want bickering buddies that solve crimes. :)

Yahoooo!!! Please say all the main characters will return and we'll have our first successful sequel drama! Not that sequels haven't been done before but either they lose/change major characters ala Bad Guys, Age of Youth or the storyline for the sequel makes no sense at all ala Ten 2.

So I hope this sequel is on point in every way.
